Fushigi no Umi Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is a simple strategy game for
the Famicom. It is based on the anime of the same name, featuring many of the
same characters. You control Nadia and her party, and you do battle with the
Neo-Atlantis group on each map. There are 50 maps to play on, each with
increasing difficulty in terms of enemy levels, and you can either play by
yourself or against a second human player. The strategy element is simple in
nature, with the main objective to kill the opposing team's leader (Nadia or
the Emperor). There are items that randomly appear, and each character has
special techniques to use. In addition, you can gain experience by defeating
enemies in battle, which in turn can make you stronger (this carries over to
subsequent maps by saving). It is a bit tedious at first, since a lot of
grinding is indeed necessary to beat the later stages, but once you get the
hang of it, this game is fun to play.

========
Pre-Game
========

When you start the game, you will go to a menu screen with five options:

Game Start (ゲームスタート): Start a game by loading an existing save file (go
to New File if you need to start a new game).
You can choose to play a 1 or 2 player game.

Register/New File (とうろくする): Create a new save file (you MUST do this in
order to begin a new game).

Erase File (とうろくをけす): Erase an existing save file.

View Data (とうろくをみる): View the character data for the selected file.

Settings (かんきょうせってい): Change the game settings, such as the gameplay
                             speed (ゲームスピード) and battle speed
                             (バトルスピード).

Finally, you will be able to select the stage you play on. There are 50 to
choose from, listed in ten rows of five (each row is a certain location or
scenario). An additional five will open up when you complete the original 50.
The stage settings are:

1-5: パリのまちなみ
6-10: ストーンサークル
11-15: ガーゴイルじょう
16-20: バンデルガンドじょう
21-25: そうこ
26-30: パイプライン
31-35: かいてい
36-40: なんきょく
41-45: どうくつ
46-50: しんでん

If you completed a given stage, a star will appear next to its number. You
can also replay previously completed stages. It should also be noted that as
the stage numbers go up, the enemy's levels increase as well. That said, you
may need to replay the earlier stages multiple times to build the necessary
experience so you can survive the later stages (also known as grinding). It
is very possible to quickly win on a given stage, particularly by using the
Long technique or the Electricity item, but you will really want to level up
your entire team so they are more able to survive in the later stages.

Anyway, once you select a stage, the game will begin.

========
Gameplay
========

In the game, each side takes turns moving their units across the map. You
can only perform one action with one unit per turn. If you move the cursor to
a unit, you can press A to make a submenu appear:

Move (いどう): Choose to move that unit. The possible locations you can
move are shown by flashing tiles around the unit. You can
                  not pass through other units.

Technique (わざ): Select a technique to use (only certain ones can be
                     used on the map).

Item (もちもの): Select an item that the unit is currently holding. You
can then select an item from the list, and use (つかう),
pass to an adjacent unit (わたす), or drop (すてる).

Status (しらべる): View the status of any unit on the battlefield, enemy
or ally alike. Press A to view their techniques and
                      items, and B to exit.

After you complete an action for your unit, the opposing team's turn begins.
If you move your unit dierctly next to an enemy unit, you will enter a battle
screen. The battle is only between those two units (sometimes more if you
are surrounded by multiple units when approaching/being approached). You will
have a new set of commands to use:

Attack (たたかう): Use a regular attack against the target.

Technique (わざ): Select a technique to use on the target.

Item (もちもの): Select an item to use.

Escape (にげる): Attempt to escape the battle.

When you select a command, a cursor will appear on the screen. Use Up/Down to
select the unit you want to perform the action with, then press A to continue
with it. Once the action is carried out, you may either get another turn
(depending on the unit's speed) or the enemy will get a turn. The battle ends
when one unit's HP is depleted, or either side escapes. If you escape the
battle, your unit will run off to a random empty position on the map and the
turn will end.

If you win a battle, you will gain experience points depending on the level
of the unit defeated. You gain a level for every 100 experience points or so.
When you gain a level, your stats (HP, MP, ST - Strength, AC - Accuracy, MD -
Mind/Magic) may increase. Your HP and MP will be fully restored as well, as
an added bonus. You do not learn additional techniques for leveling up, but
it is essential to gain levels since you will have a hard time attacking or
defending against other units if you are at a lower level. As you would
expect, HP is your health and MP are your magic points. You use MP every time
a technique is performed. If you run out of HP, your unit is defeated and
removed from the map.

The main objective of course, is to defeat the opposing team's lead character
(for Player 1, it's Nadia - ナディア; for Player 2, it's Emperor - こうてい).
Once you defeat that character, the game ends and the surviving team wins the
battle. You will then be able to save your game and either continue or quit
playing. If you lose, you won't lose any items or experience gained in that
battle.

Items will randomly appear on the map at the start of some turns. If you move
a unit to the same location as the item, that unit will collect the item. To
see a list of items, scroll down to that section of the guide below.

NOTE: For the Movement values, this is based on the radius surrounding your
unit. For instance, if your unit has a value of 2, they can move a
maximum of 2 spaces in any direction from their current position. The
two-letter designation next to each character's name is their symbol,
displayed by pressing Select on the map screen.
