Welcome to 'Katte ni Shirokuma' for the NES, released by CBS Sony in 1989.

The guide uses Shift-JIS to display Japanese characters in .txt form. If you
cannot see them automatically and just see some garbled font, set your browser
encoding or file viewer manually. It is recommended that you view the file in
a fixed font such as Courier New as some of the tables with Shift-JIS will
look odd without it.

The game is entirely in Japanese and weird Japanese at that: katakana is often
spelled with hiragana instead, verbs use different endings (Japanese accent or
just game font?) and the strange setting makes it difficult for non-Japanese
to get the quirkiness. It is mainly recommended for advanced Japanese speakers.

As you play the game for longer the season will change. It is indicated by the
tree in the top right corner:
Green - Summer
Yellow - Autumn
White - Winter
Purple - Spring
The seasons are used for passing time which you sometimes need to do, as well
as special points of interest that might only be used at a certain season (I
only noticed this for the bird nests but maybe I was lucky at some points and
did not realise it).

I have made companion maps for the overworld, the well and the castle. They
will surely help you to find your way around. Note that the NPCs can move
around as you progress their quests so these might only be the starting
positions. They might also not appear from the very beginning.


God:

Throughout the game you will encounter an old man who is supposed to be god. It
is not a religious game but with the nature theme of the game there is a
creator to control and guide you somehow.


Cheats:
```````
There are cheats to an adventure game, yes!
The main issue with the game's non-adventure sections are that they are
frustrating. Personal opinion aside, you might not enjoy grinding levels either
so use these hex cheats:
001E @ FF
Keeps HP at 255 so you never die. Unfortunately if you are too weak to actually
hurt the enemy the fight will last forever (switch it off and kill yourself or
whatever, reload). Or do ~1/2 HP damage and take forever to defeat the enemy ;)

When you start the game (S) you have 30HP and 0 IQ (the character, not you!).
You also have 2 companions in your menu box and they start with the same levels
but they are not around at this time (soon, chill). Run into the brown bear
nearby for your first conversation.

Quit the conversation (from now on I will assume you do that if I move on with
the game). Walk west and then north to a cave (C). Enter. Also a note on this:
you have to position Mr. Polar with the head at the cave level before you can
press up and enter. If your butt is at the cave level you will not move up
correctly or not at all. It gets more frustrating in the future when you have
companions in tow because the turning is like a long truck (you will see what I
mean soon enough).

marches.

the ocean. There should be a spot with three grass patches to walk into.

steps down and then find our polar bear at the beach.

Attempt to leave for another quick conversation but you will shortly be at the
beach again as polar bear (with boar in tow). Return all the way to the bear
near the beginning which means up the beach, over the river, follow the river
and continue west even when it bends south and when you reach the wall go north
a bit. Note that there is another bear on the way just one square northeast.

Go east twice and north until you reach the cave. Enter it.

Go south and turn west till you reach the river. Follow it south and you can
cross. The follow west until you see three stone blocks on the left side of the
screen. Turn south at this point, the west and you will see a suspicious clear
space.

Go south twice and talk to the owl.

Well, the owl is gone so we move on too. This next maneuvering is a little
weird but stay with me: Go east on the top part, then north to the next screen,
and as you just saw you can go back south a few steps to the right. Go back
north between the two mountains in the middle of the screen (there is a tree
between the mountains).

Take a step back south and then east a screens. Turn north and I believe you
already know where you step next...

Go east, follow the linear path south, east, north again and then stay on the
second row from the bottom and talk into the gap between the trees six steps
from the left. It is a normal tile so do not look for anything special.

Return west on the linear path and at the clearing go south, west, immediately
north twice and then east immediately until you hit the ocean. Turn south at
the last tile and in the next screen you will hit a special tile shortly after
entering. Just ensure you are at the edge at the ocean.

Return north to the edge of the ocean, turn west and when you can turn north do
so but go around the tree. You will see a space distortion you can enter.

So much for this. Guess we are stuck on this part of the island now.
Go west twice, south once, west again and then south to find a purple pig
figure but actually it is brown when you approach it.

Go north once, east, north again to the east and then run east until you reach
the space distortion and then approach the tree in the screen below.

This created a bridge across the east (poor tree but ok) to circumvent the
space distortion to the north.
From here go east twice, north five screens, then east twice to enter the cave

Go west to the wall then south thrice. Enter the square in-between four hills

know), then west across the bridge, south one screen and then west until

You could leave the bear hanging there but we will accept the help and enter
the cave. After another short scene you can enter the cave proper.

Exit out the other stairs to reach the plateau. This plateau has nothing but
monkey, or what appears to be an ugly man in a monkey suit. Approach him/it.

Walk east and talk to the giant flying squirrel.

Back through the cave. Go south one screen and then east all the way until you
cross the bridge. The screen after the bridge is your signal to turn north and
you will arrive at the cave blocked by a boulder. You probably saw it many
times before. This time approach it for a close-up.

Return to the previous cave and meet up with the monkeys on the plateau.

Cross the river at the north side, go west to the sea and then north until you
find a piglet.

Now find the next boar at the east side of this area by going along the north
ridge and then turning south as soon as you can.

Find the boar northwest from here again. If the first time you approach it
there is only one little piglet with it then just approach it again and you
should be ok. There should be five piglets in the background.
After the scene go to the boar at the western side of the sialdn and there
should be 10 piglets with it.
Go further south one screen to find a raccoon.

Next destination is the tree in the northeast.

Trek back to the angry bear but go north of it up to the higher plateau and
enter the cave.

After going back down the steps turn west and go south one screen. Talk to the

Back to the little cave at the north.

So now you are in a little desert patch.
There is only one another screen to the north. Approach the right hole.
You will move to another patch of desert but this one is slightly bigger and
almost as empty. Your destination is the tree at the southern end.

The log will take you to the main map again. From the ocean you can enter at
the beach but at this point stay in the water and float east, north and then
east again until you find a river floating into the ice continent.

Leave at this point and float south and then east until the ocean starts going
south. Follow it along and go around the beach thus turning west. You will soon
see the river going north so float into the mouth to find a room.

Exit, float up the western river too.
This is a maze that does not make much sense (you have seen those in other
games maybe). Randomly walking around will get you nowhere.
Go west, south, west, east again, north. When you reach the center of the room
you will start a scene.
Now go east, south, west, north and end up in a, well, dead-end. Run into the
northern wall for a scene again.

Return south, then west, west and a scene will play in the center.
You end up at the beach in the southwest corner of the map. Entering the water
will transform you back into the log. Float to the north and approach the
oyster shell at the beach.

Float north from the beach and go to the northern beach where you find an otter

From now on you will have random encounters with enemies. If you ever run out
of health you will return to the starting point.
The menu changes too:

わぎ Peace Negotiation
にげる Escape
もちもの Items
Expect to spend a good part of the game in this dungeon. Staying on the correct
path helps to speed up this section.

Defeating the enemy either by attacking or negotiation yields a few IQ points.
Escaping works only at some enemies near the northern area and obviously
cowardly bears do not get IQ points. You cannot run from the square enemies as
far as I remember. Negotiation successes that result in an end to the fight
also do not yield IQ points, but defeating it with negotiation skills that hurt
does.
If you need to heal, use the menu (B while on the map) and use the ぶどうとう
-> たベる. You can find those glucose from defeated enemies so it IS worth
fighting them. You can have multiple glucose but the item screen only shows 1
so keep track of when you gain them (the last screen of the encounter tells
you) or just use sparingly. You can also run back to the old man to heal (say
yes - top option).

The start of the level is mainly walking around but soon you will find streams.
The streams take you in a stream and if you do not move it will drop you off at
the other end. That might be good but might be the wrong way as well. You can
control your direction at most junctions although at some you are stuck at
being flushed out. The entry ways are a giveaway in which direction you can go.
The good news is that there are enemy encounters when riding the stream!

Anyhow, the first enemies are really easy. Walk south and continue to the
screen with the gut-like path. Here fight some turquoise snakes. They are easy
and only hit your for 2 HP. After a while you should level up by receiving a
new negotiation skill (べおはっぐ) as well as full HP. I either got this from
pure attacking or using the negotiation skills to kill them (1 and 3 work, 4
ends the fight without bonuses). You do not see the level anywhere by the way.
Also  you should have picked up glucose which is vital for healing as you
progress here.

After you have the 5th negotiation skill head down south at the middle of the
three paths and then continue another screen south.

Take the southwest path. These six-armed cells are much tougher than the snakes
prior and you will take damage. Heal once in a while if necessary as you make
your way to the box.

You can pick up armor (よろい) here as well as well as a shield (たて) that
will result in less damage taken (as far as I understand). The fight at the box
is random but most often the pink six-armed cell which is the toughest in this
corner of the map. The more IQ you have the tougher you attack so level up more
if you need to get through this section. If you find that the enemies evade
your attacks then you definitely need to gain some IQ. Actually the main item
is not in this box but you need to gain experience (IQ yeah I know) to survive
the other side of the map.

When ready (I was around 300 IQ at that point) take the northern path east and
back west, then north into the stream. It will take you back towards the
beginning. Go north and turn east.
So if you got sidetracked leveling up and do not understand the directions just
now, basically from the start of the map (old man) go south one screen and turn
east. Follow the path east to another stream (the enemies here are a little
tougher as you notice) and you end up at the heart.

Take the left path into the heart.

After you exit the heart, take the top left stream and ride it to the end. In
the next screen go to the top left to continue west. Approach the box.

With the key in hand/paw make your way back east and take the northeast stream
to the heart. Enter the left tube again (incidentally the other tube is not
enterable anyway...)

Press B to leave this (hell)hole. We shall not return.

Walk south from this place but not down to the beach (why is there sandy beach
at the arctic anyway) and then west and south again to the bird nest. If the
bird is not here right now you may need to wait for the season to change.

Trek north of the arctic to the penguin (going around a few distortions as
usual).
After the quick talk the penguin will have moved a screen north. You can dip
into the water from this screen so float to the penguin's new position.

Enter the well to the north.

Leave the arctic continent and navigate south to the southern beach with the
cave. Enter it.

Well that was exciting. Take the stairs up to the west and meet an ostrich.

Go north to the empty bird nest. If it is not empty you need to wait for the
season to change (green tree, pink tree is ok, did not check for yellow).

Talk to the kangaroo at the west side.

Go south to the oasis. The spot just at the north side can be entered.

Now we play the waiting game for the palm tree to grow. It might take a season
change or maybe you need summer (green) but just kind of walk around in the
other screens and eventually when you come back you will see the spot where the
oasis entrance is has a little tree icon instead. Approach it will also show
the palm tree in the background.

After the nice HP boost we take the floating tree west of the island through
the canal and up to the river where the little bridge is.
Another crazy maze: north, west, south, north, east, walk forward a bit to the
center and you will cut to a scene.
Next walk back west, north, west, north and find the stairs up to the area you
have not been to before at the northwest of the map.
The western part of this high plateau is cut off with rocks so your own chance
to progress is to walk right into the lake, and the little top left corner to
be precise.

You can now use the raft to get across to the other side.
Stay north of the river and go south after you have gone east.
Approach the pool of water here for a scene.
Go further east to the tree.

Run into the nearby boulder to slam it into the fish-shape lake and make it dry
up.
Approach the dried up lake below.

Go to the northwest screen of the lake and walk to one of the spots where you
will find a pink ball.

When you try to leave you get to see a short scene first (it is not the first
time so do not act surprised...)

Return to the cave in the northwest area of the area and talk to the sly fox
"guarding" it.

Return into the maze cave.
Venture east, south, east, south to exit back to the log.
Make your way back to the arctic island on the northeast part of the world. Go
back down the well and fight random encoun... ok, ok, don't worry, just joking.
Go back to the NORTHERN well with the old geezer.

You now have to leave and wait. Wait how long? Well, a year! Basically when you
come back to the old fart you should say きけ -> しきのたま again, and if you
only get a single page message from the game then it is too early. You should
need to press A to flip pages and then you know you have it correctly. I waited
a year but maybe it depends on the season talked to him before leaving on
your..., well, leave. I arrived in summer and talked to him again in spring to
give you some kind of indication.

For some nostalgia we will go to the cave with the old guy from the beginning
of the game. To get there go to the middle beach, up to the greenery, southwest
across the river and then head west to the cliff. It is just north from here.

Well, god is apparently gone. You cannot even go back into the cave anymore.

You are now thrown into a fight. Remember the menu from the well?
I would recommend just using the negotiation skill 5 to dwindle it's HP. You
get a massive 50 IQ points from the win.

Jesus, or rather, oh my god, where are we now?

to continue to a dungeon. Unfortunately there are random encounters here so get
ready to fight and negotiate your way to victory (and IQ points). Remember that
higher IQ means more power so you basically want to level up. Towards the end
of the dungeon you should be at 500+, no kidding, but you get a lot more per
fight than the well before. For now just follow the directions unless you are
really struggling. The robot dolls and bears at the beginning should be
pushovers.

Go north, east and north again into the "server room". Talk to the guy on the
monitor.

とれ -> あいろん

Go back south, west, north twice and west. Take the staircase to the next
level.
From here go south, east, then north until you reach another monitor.
みる -> あたり
みる -> もにたー
みる -> どらいやー

とれ -> どらいやー

Return to the staircase (north all the way, then west, north again). Go down
the eastern staircase this time.
Reminder: the higher your IQ the more negotiation options you have that might
be powerful against certain enemies. If you find you cannot beat an enemy level
up near the beginning with the robot bears.

Trek south all the way until you have to turn west and then south again to find
the third monitor.

Now that you have visited all three monitors go back north, west and north to
the large computer console.

もちもの -> えあこん -> つかえ

The doors in the screen to the north are now unlocked. Continue north where you
could not go before and then turn east. Descend to the next floor.

This is a short floor and your main purpose is to be ready for the final boss.
As I mentioned earlier, being at close to 999 will give you the best chance but
of course you can be lower. Even at 500 it is possible if you have plenty of
healing items (glucose hmmmm). If it gets boring to level up you can go to each
of the boxes in the adjacent rooms.

When you are ready go ahead north and to the brain.

If you are high IQ then this is actually very easy. Pummel the guy until he
succumbs your intellect. After a short scene with Mr. God you get the end
credits. Well done!
