1. INTRODUCTION
Egypt is an odd puzzle game about not really lining up similar objects but
lining them up to be lined up. You need to match up blocks of the same type
on an 8x8 grid(it wraps, but you can't) until all the treasure-blocks are
gone. You move them around with arrows while in your weird little marble
ball. There are squares you can move on and those you can't, and if you get
trapped you can kill yourself or use magic and start over. You also lose
automatically if a puzzle is mathematically unsolvable--i.e. just one of a
type of icon remaining.
And sometimes it will seem impossible. You don't have any firing but often
you'll have to put three icons together. However, there's really only one way
to do this, which cuts down on the game's variety. Lots of times you wind up
going back and forth on the board just to get something little done, and the
cramped quarters combined with not really knowing when you made a mistake can
make this very tough.
So yeah, levels always seem to take more moves than you think they do,
although they're usually quicker the second time by. While Egypt sometimes
gives you the feeling of being lost in the desert or even running in circles
in a pyramid, the puzzles aren't terribly elegant. You feel more as though
you're just checking work a lot, and the only really interesting puzzles are
the first ones in a level, where a quick reversal of moves nets you a quick
win. But then the puzzle seems a bit too formulated perhaps?
The game changes graphics every three levels but it's not enough to stay
really absorbing. Egypt may be high on challenge but nuisances like the end-
of level where your bubble blorps to the door and everything fades out slowly
get obnoxious early. Plus there's no take-back. All this makes the game feel
a bit abstract. There's no real story and no real magic beyond the negative
type of being VERY frustrated at a puzzle game where you have to tee up A to
tee up B to tee up C. In fact even the magic cheats feel a bit contrived as
they take away too much from the solution. But nevertheless it is an
accomplishment to make such a confusing game from such a small board, without
any pieces moving crazy like in chess.
If you find the Egypt ROM, and the Egypt1.01.ips, then run Ninja and use the
second on the first. romhacking.net has info on the second two which are not
illegal, but I won't give info on the first, which is.

Non-PC joke: I don't know why they called it Egypt when it's really
frustrating enough to be a Libya or Sudan.
2. CONTROLS
2-1. MOVING AROUND AND WHAT THE PIECES DO
<START> pauses the game, not that you need to, except to get rid of the
music.
<SELECT> gives the option to kill yourself.
<A> or <B> may use magic. I was too manly to play with magic. I played on
hard.
Arrows move as you'd expect.
Tiles slide after you step on them, in the direction they point. Objects that
touch each other vanish immediately. If you're left with one object, you lose
and the screen fades.

2-3. MAGIC
I didn't use magic. I don't know how that affects the ending if you do. I bet
it adversely affects it. But you have the magic of the internet and this
guide! So why bother? I'm not sure what you get when, but here are the types:
(the terms according to Wikipedia)
Lightning bolt: destroys walls within a 3x3 area surrounding the player. Use
this BEFORE you get trapped, preferably near the center of a very busy board.
Feather: 5 free moves without touching off arrows or walls. Great in a pinch
when you just made that ONE miscalculation...
Flash: destroys all walls. Handy for tight levels.
Because rooms get tougher as you go along in the level, try...if you can...to
save the magic for the end, if you must.
3. STRATEGIES AND OBSERVATIONS
3-1. PAIRS
Learning to make pairs is a critical part of the game. Let's go through the
toughest pair to make--with 2 pieces so close, just 2 squares away from each
other. Remember, lining pairs of objects in the same row doesn't help--line
them up 1 away from each other.

Here's what you need to do to match them.
1) move a vertical arrow into position so you can push one of the 2's up one.
2) move a horizontal arrow into position
3) move one of the twos horizontally
You should inspect the board for candidates i.e. nearby arrows that are free
and that you can walk on, or arrows you can walk on to put these in position.
In a crowded area you may have to consider what happens with all the
shifting, and you may need to adapt a two-part plan--just getting the items
near each other, or getting to them, then doing what needs to be done.
3-2. TRIADS
The main trouble with this game will be lining three of the same shape up at
once. It's done as follows:

..and not 1 square to the right. This is the single most important skill,
and I've found in addition that taking care of icons of which there are an
odd number makes the rest more manageable.
Generally you want to keep two of a prospective triad with a space apart to
fit in, if there's not too much on the board. Otherwise try to keep a lot of
stuff away--triads close by can get in the way of you making other moves. If
they get juggled around they are tough to put back.
However, there are other ways to get triads.

It doesn'tlook like these can form an easy triad. But wait! Pushing the right
arrow actually works! This is a bit tougher to conceptualize based on how
things are all over the board, but you feel s-m-a-h-t when you find it.
You can even go for tetrads although this really has to be set up.

Again, the arrow makes quick work of things, although if you use the left
arrow you can probably get rid of things in time.
3-3. GENERAL
--Beware of trapping too many arrows in a corner where you can't reach them.
--Go for the triads first. Once you do, the pairs can usually be picked off
easily on an empty board.
--Triads on a full board can often be picked off VERY early on in a few
moves.
--If you find a quick match chances are it's right. A corollary of Murphy's
Law works here, but only because you KNOW the game is solvable. There are two
choices: either the levels are too brilliant for you to solve quickly(though
the solution is there) or a quick move is too good to be true. The latter is
exposed early enough that if you get a good rally going you should be
confident you're right.
--So, if it feels good, do it. But if it feels aimless, try something else.
--When going for a certain square in the corner make sure you have a way out.
Don't discount jumping off and on a square when possible.
--Without too many pieces on the board, there's probably no great cosmic
reason that you're busted. You're not. But you'll need to play carefully.
--If using save states, try to save once after each match. Save slot 0 for
main game progress.
--Nibbling away taking whatever pair you can find that's easiest generally
works well.
--Don't worry about taking a lot of moves. With best play a lot of early
levels are <100 but it's more important to have a plan to nail icon pairs
one(two?) at a time.
--See if you will accidentally set off two of a triad if you have a tricky
move to make.
--Also see if you are planning a dead-end move.
--Sometimes a finesse(moving something quickly left and right) can help. Be
on the lookout also for being able to step off and on the square you're on.
--It's not as easy as you think to line up two similar icons. Often if they
are out of line you have to push 1 just right/left of another, then push a
vertical arrow under it, step on the vertical arrow, and make sure you can
get around enough.
--"rescue" a trapped arrow by going into a mess of bricks with another arrow.
--try to establish a conveyor where you can take an arrow all the way, say,
right. Then you can go back left just looping around vertical arrows or
blocks. And beware of a vertical arrow that may throw a mess in the whole
thing. See if you can finesse--move out of the way and back--to change the
board subtly but decisively.

I eventually stumbled on a good solution. You can't really nail the triad
first but you can line up 2 idols 2 from each other and cross your fingers.

Level 19 is in a different format from the other levels. You must complete
the rooms one at a time. They're not especially difficult, fortunately.
Compared to the previous few levels, at least. New graphics too of course and
nice atmospheric music.
Once you pass one room, you move on to the next via a drawbridge and you get
a new password.
