------------
Version 2.00
------------
This guide, along with all my others, was updated to make it more consistent
with my other walkthroughs, in terms of formatting. I also found a few more
spelling errors, which have been corrected, and updated the copyright
section to change "legal action" to "corrective actions."
Version 2.00 was submitted to GameFAQs on January 01, 2015.
------------
Version 1.10
------------
This guide, along with all of my others, was updated to include my new
email address. Additionally, several of my guides now have a new section,
Previous Revisions. This was done mainly to move most of the Version
History to the bottom of the file. Also, I think I caught all of the
remaining spelling errors, though one or two probably slipped through the
cracks. I hope you like the new look!
This update was submitted to GameFAQs on June 25, 2004.

***ASCII Nintendo Controller was designed by Colin Moriarty. He was
nice enough to allow me to use it. Thank you Colin!***
Since this is a Nintendo game, the basic Nintendo controller must be used
in order for this game to work correctly. The buttons, as well as what they
do, are as follows:
Directional Pad -
Up/Down - Moves the cursor Up or Down at the Menu Screen.
- Moves Donkey Kong, Junior Up or Down during game play.
Left/Right - Moves Donkey Kong, Junior Left of Right during game play.
A Button - Allows Donkey Kong, Junior to jump.
B Button - Not used in Donkey Kong, Junior.
START Button - Pauses and unpauses the game.
SELECT Button - Not used in Donkey Kong, Junior.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 03.02 -- Object of the Game -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Donkey Kong, Junior is on a mission to rescue Donkey Kong from Mario's
cage. Jump from vine to vine collecting bonus fruits and avoiding lethal
snapjaws. Then move on to tougher stages. Jump platforms, dodge sparks of
electricity, and watch out for those birds. Use your skills to get the key
that will set your Papa free."
The above story was taken directly from the Instruction Manual that comes
with the game.
In other words, Donkey Kong, Junior is trying to rescue his father, Donkey
Kong. To do this, Donkey Kong, Junior must grab a key that can be found in
each level. Once this key had been obtained, the player will advance to the
next level. However, in the fourth stage, Donkey Kong, Junior must push six
keys up to the top of the screen and into the key holes. Once all six keys
have been placed in the key holes, the chains holding Donkey Kong's cage
will fall off, allowing Donkey Kong, Junior ro rescue Donkey Kong.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 03.03 -- Hints and Tips -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Donkey Kong, Junior climbs more quickly when using two vines at the same
time.
- However, Donkey Kong, Junior slides down more quickly when only using one
vine at a time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 03.04 -- Game A and Game B Differences -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two different modes of play in Donkey Kong, Junior. Game A is the
easier version, while Game B has more enemies, has faster enemies, and is
generally harder than Game A. Below are all of the spcific differences
between Game A and Game B.
---------
Stage One
---------
- Mario releases the Blue Snapjaws more frequently.
- The Snapjaws, both Red and Blue versions, are more "intelligent," in
that they will actively pursue Donkey Kong, Junior by traveling along
the same vines.
- The Snapjaws, both Red and Blue versions, are faster than in Game A.
- There is an additional Red Snapjaw, which can be found on the right-
most platform.
---------
Stage Two
---------
- Mario releases Nitpickers more frequently.
- The Nitpickers move a lot faster than in Game A.
- The Eggs fall more quickly than in Game A.
-----------
Stage Three
-----------
- Mario releases Blue Sparks faster.
- The Sparks, both Red and Blue versions, are more "intelligent," in that
they pursue Donkey Kong, Junior more aggressively.
- The Sparks, both Red and Blue versions, move faster than in Game A.
- There is one more Blue Spark at the beginning of the Stage than can be
found in Game A.
----------
Stage Four
----------
- Mario releases Black Birds more frequently.
- The Red Snapjaws are more "intelligent," in that they pursue Donkey
Kong, Junior more aggressively than in Game A.
- The Black Birds are faster.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 03.05 -- How To Score -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Donkey Kong, Junior, there are basically four ways for the player to
score points. There is the Fruit Attack (and the collection of Fruit more
generally), Bonus Points, Jumps, and by placing keys into key holes. The
last scoring opportunity is only available in the fourth stage.
Fruit (Normal) - Each fruit eaten will give the player 400 points.
Fruit (Attack) - If the fruit falls on an enemy, then the player will be
awarded bonus points.
- Killing an enemy with a fruit is worth 800 points.
- Each additional enemy killed in this manner will earn the
player an additional 400 points.
Bonus Points - When Donkey Kong, Junior reaches the key in the first
three stages, bonus points are added to the player's
score, depending on how many seconds are left on the
timer.
- The less time left, the lower the bonus.
Jumping - If Donkey Kong, Junior jumps over an enemy, the player
is awarded 100 points.
Opening a Lock - If Donkey Kong, Junior puts a Key in a lock, the player
is awarded 200 points.
- This is only available in Stage Four.
Donkey Kong, Junior is like an arcade game, in that there are only a handful
of Stages, and when the game has been completed, the player can go right
back through the whole game again. The Stages will simply repeat after
completing the first four for the first time. They will continue to repeat
until the player tires of playing the game. There is no official "ending"
to Donkey Kong, Junior, except rescuing Donkey Kong after Stage Four would
almost certainly qualify as beating the game.

.---------------------.
LEGEND:
---------------------
SP = Starting Point
FR = Fruit
M = Mario
KY = Key
RS = Red Snapjaw
'---------------------'
When the opening stage begins, Donkey Kong, Jr. is standing on the bottom
left platform. There are two enemies on screen, both of which are Red
Snapjaws. One is on the next platform up and to the right, while the other
starts the stage on the top ledge. These two enemies are indicated by the
"RS" in the above map. Not pictured, however, are the Blue Snapjaws found
in the level. Mario releases these enemies occasionally, so be on the
lookout.
The first order of business for Donkey Kong, Jr. is to jump up to the far
left vine, and climb until he can reach the vine to the right. When this
happens, Donkey Kong, Jr. should use both vines to climb, as it is faster to
move in this fashion. Typically, the first Blue Snapjaw released by Mario
will travel down one of these two vines, so be careful on the ascent.
Continue this climb until reaching the fruit, which is what looks to be a
pair of pears. Grab the pears and move to the right, onto the top ledge.
Occasionally, the Red Snapjaw will prowl along this ledge. If this occurs,
wait for the Red Snapjaw to go back down to the lower ledge, and then move
onto the upper ledge. From this ledge, jump over to the vine immediately to
the right of both ledges, grabbing the apple along the way, and climb down.
Fall down to the platform, and jump to the right onto the next platform.
From this platform, again jump to the right and onto the third platform.
When on the third platform, jump up and to the left to grab the fourth vine
from the right of the screen. Climb up until Donkey Kong, Jr. can reach the
Bananas to the left. Reach out and grab the Bananas, and then continue to
move up the vine. Again, as Donkey Kong, Jr. climbs towards the last fruit,
beware of Blue Snapjaws. If any come towards Donkey Kong, Jr., move onto
another vine momentarily, until the Blue Snapjaw passes out of harm's way.
Continue up the vines and grab the second pair of pears.
After obtaining the final fruit, move across the vines to the right as far
as possible. Use the two vines on the far right to climb up to the top of
the level. Jump off the vines to the left onto the ledge at the top of the
level, being careful to avoid any wandering Snapjaws. Once on the ledge,
move Donkey Kong, Jr. to the left, and up the step onto the last platform.
Avoid any Blue Snapjaws, and jump onto the tiny vine to the left of the Key.
Climb this vine, and the game will automatically put Donkey Kong, Jr. onto
the little platform above Mario. Stage One is now complete!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 04.02 -- Stage Two -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.---------------------.
LEGEND:
---------------------
SP = Starting Point
FR = Fruit
M = Mario
KY = Key
'---------------------'
When this stage begins, Mario has already released one Nitpicker, and will
continue to release them for the duration of the level. In this stage, the
player has a choice between two different ways to complete the level. One
way, the easy way, will take a little longer, but is not typically as
dangerous. The other way, the hard way, will save the player some time, but
requires both skill and luck in jumping ability.
First, the easy way. From the starting point, move Donkey Kong, Jr. to the
right and jump onto the trampoline. From the trampoline, jump immediately
onto the platform to the right. Move Donkey Kong, Jr. to the right edge of
this platform and wait for the moving platform. Jump onto the moving
platform and ride it all the way to the right. From the moving platform,
jump up onto the far right platform.
Once on this platform, climb the vine up to the platform to the left of the
tree. Jump onto this platform and wait for the moving chain to approach.
Jump to the left from the platform and grab onto the nearest moving chain,
being careful to avoid any falling Eggs from the Nitpickers flying above.
Ride this moving chain as far to the left as it will go, and then jump onto
the small moving platform. From this small moving platform, jump up to the
next moving chain, and ride it all the way to the left. Once the moving
chain has moved as far left as possible, grab onto the chain to the left.
Now, the hard way. If Donkey Kong, Jr. jumps onto the trampoline and then
immediately jumps again when the trampoline is at its lowest point, he will
do a "super jump." In a "super jump," Donkey Kong, Jr. will go almost twice
as high as normal. If the player can time this "super jump" correctly, he
can jump up onto the small moving platform right off the bat. From here, he
can jump up and grab onto the leftmost moving chain, ride it all the way to
the left, and then grab onto the chain to the left. In this way, much of
the easy way can be skipped, thus saving the player some time. In either
case, the player ends up at the bottom of the chain with the Bananas on it.
From this point, climb the chain and grab the Bananas to score some points,
while avoiding the Nitpickers flying throughout the level. Move to the
right, across the chains, grab the Apple, and continue to the right. Move
to the chain with the Pears and go down to pick up the fruit. This is the
most dangerous fruit to obtain in this stage, and it is not necessary for
the player to grab the Pears to complete the level.
Once at this point, avoid the Nitpickers and move all the way to the right.
Climb these chains and jump onto the platform at the top of the screen.
Jump over the gap to the left, and move Donkey Kong, Jr. to the left, while
avoiding any Nitpickers that Mario may release. Jump up and grab onto the
chain to the left of the Key, and climb it to complete the level. Stage Two
is now complete!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 04.03 -- Stage Three -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.---------------------.
LEGEND:
---------------------
SP = Starting Point
FR = Fruit
M = Mario
KY = Key
'---------------------'
Stage Three is a relatively easy level. There is a Red Spark circling around
each of the four platforms in the middle if the screen, and there are two
Blue Sparks near the bottom of the screen at the beginning of the level.
The Blue Sparks can travel down the level along the pathways, but the Red
Sparks can only circle their original platform.
From the starting point, jump up to the blue vines and climb up. Jump to the
right, onto the first platform, being careful to avoid any Sparks that may
be in the way. Continue to the right, grabbing the Apple along the way, and
then jump onto the vines to the right of the platform. Climb these vines
until Donkey Kong, Jr. can jump onto the next platform up.
Jump to the left off the vines, avoiding any stray Sparks, and continue to
the left. Continue to the left, grabbing another Apple along the way, and
then jump to the left onto the vines. Climb the vines until Donkey Kong, Jr.
can reach the third platform up, and jump to the right onto the platform.
The Red Sparks become faster and faster as Donkey Kong, Jr. ascends, so the
player may have to jump the Red Spark a second time as Donkey Kong, Jr.
makes his way to the right. Continue to the right, grabbing the third and
final Apple, until Donkey Kong, Jr. can jump to the vines to the right of
the third platform.
Grab onto the vines, and climb until Donkey Kong, Jr. can reach the top
platform. Jump to the left onto the final platform, being careful to avoid
any Blue or Red Sparks in the way. Move Donkey Kong, Jr. to the left and
jump onto the vine to the left of the Key. Climb this vine to finish the
level. Stage Three is now complete!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Section 04.04 -- Stage Four -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.---------------------.
LEGEND:
---------------------
SP = Starting Point
FR = Fruit
M = Mario
KY = Key
'---------------------'
When this level begins, there is only one Black Bird on the loose. Many more
will be released by Mario throughout the level, however, so be careful.
There are also two Red Snapjaws roaming the top ledge of the level, so be
careful not to run into them. They can go up and down any chain at will, so
just make sure to watch out for them. They can be a real pain when trying
to put the last few Keys into the Locks, believe me. The first thing Donkey
Kong, Jr. should do is to climb the first two chains from the left, in order
to place the first Key in the Lock. On the way, feel free to grab the Apple,
while avoiding any flying Black Birds.
Once the first Key is in the Lock, climb back down to the bottom, and jump
up onto the third and fourth chains from the left. Push these two Keys to
the top, into their respective Locks, while avoiding the deadly Black Birds.
Once done, climb back down to the bottom, and jump up onto the fifth and
sixth chains.
Climb these chains and push the Keys into the Locks. Again, avoid the Black
Birds on the way up. Now there is only one more Lock to go. Climb back down
to the bottom and jump up onto the last two chains. Push the final Key up
to the Lock, grabbing the Apple on the way. As always, avoid all flying
Black Birds along the way. Once the final Key is in the Lock, the majority
of the top platform will disappear, and Donkey Kong, Jr. will be standing in
the middle of the screen.
Donkey Kong and Mario will fall from the top platform, and Donkey Kong, Jr.
will catch Donkey Kong above his head. Mario, on the other hand, falls onto
the floor, and is knocked unconscious. Congratulations, Stage Four is now
complete! After completing all four stages, the game will restart at Stage
One, and the player can continue to play through all four stages for all
eternity.
There are only a handful of enemies that Donkey Kong, Junior must avoid in
this game. Many of them are only found in one particular stage, whereas only
a couple can be found in multiple stages. And without further ado, here are
Donkey Kong, Junior's enemies:
Black Bird - These enemies are typically slow, and can be easily avoided.
- Be careful of them as they move back and forth through the
level, at varying heights.
- This fairly large bird is found only in Stage Four.
Blue Snapjaws - These enemies will attempt to bite Donkey Kong, Junior, just
like the Red Snapjaws.
- However, unlike Red Snapjaws, Blue Snapjaws will fall off of
vines and into the water.
- This enemy can only be found in Stage One.
Blue Spark - These Sparks are created by Mario at the top of the level,
and work their way down by using the connecting points.
- Donkey Kong, Junior can jump over these enemies, if
necessary.
- This enemy is only found in Stage Three.
Eggs - Eggs will only be encountered after they have been laid by a
Nitpicker.
- After the first Egg has been laid, every third Nitpicker
will drop an easily avoidable Egg.
- Eggs, like Nitpickers, are only found in Stage Two.
Mario - Mario is the only enemy found in every Stage of the game,
and for good reason...he is the main enemy!
- While Mario himself cannot harm the player, his various pets
and gadgets certainly have that capability.
- Can Donkey Kong, Junior rescue Donkey Kong from his grasp?
Nitpickers - Nitpickers are only found in Stage Two. Nitpickers will fly
from Mario to the right, fall into the gap, and then fly to
the left towards the player.
- Every third Nitpicker will drop an Egg as it enters the gap.
- These birds can sometimes be difficult to avoid, so be
careful.
Red Snapjaws - Like the Blue Snapjaws, these enemies will attempt to bite
Donkey Kong, Junior.
- However, unlike their Blue counterparts, Red Snapjaws will
work their way back to the top of a vine, instead of falling
off the vine and into the water below.
- This enemy can be found in Stage One and Stage Four.
Red Spark - These Sparks are not created by Mario and instead move
around the perimeter of the ledges.
- Red Sparks can be jumped over, if necessary.
- This enemy is found only in Stage Three.
This is the original guide, as submitted to GameFAQs. There will definitely
be updates to come, as there is inevitably something else that can go in
here. All sections are as complete as I want them for now. All portions of
this guide are my own design, except for the ASCII Nintendo Controller,
which was designed by Colin Moriarty. Thank you for allowing me to use it
in my guides!
Work on this guide officially began on April 26, 2004.
This guide was completed and submitted to GameFAQs on June 1, 2004.

= Section 07 -- Special Thanks and Credits =
===============================================================================
First, I would like to thank CJayC for running this site and for hosting
this guide. If not for GameFAQs, I would not be as into gaming as I am,
and I would not have thought so many other things are possible, other than
just playing the game.
I would like to thank Colin Moriarty (CMoriarty) for allowing me to use his
ASCII Nintendo Controller. He pointed out that mine was too big, so I asked
if I could use his. Thanks, Colin!
I would also like to give credit to the Instruction Manual that comes with
the game for information found in a few parts of this guide. When the
Instruction Manual was used, a note can be found in the guide. The
Instruction Manual was of particular importance in Section 03.
And last, but definitely not least, I would like to thank my close friends
on GameFAQs. Especially Steve, Devin, Chad, Brian, Zoop, Trace, and Andrew.
You guys are more help than you realize, and I thank you for that.
