Deep Dungeon IV(NES) FAQ/Walkthrough
Version 1.0.0 by [email protected](anti spam spoonerism)

Please do not reproduce this FAQ for profit without my prior consent. If you
write a polite e-mail to me referring to me(and this FAQ) by name, then I
will probably say OK. But if I ignore you that means no--and I am bad about
answering e-mail. Sorry.

This document is intended to work in concert with my GameFAQs maps. You
probably found both of them there, anyway. This document is also in ShiftJis,
so some of the text may not make sense if you cannot read it.

Thanks to odino for sending me his translation work. Thanks to the people who
originally translated the game, even though some pointers were off.

 1. INTRODUCTION

   1-1. THE GAME ITSELF

Deep Dungeon IV doesn't really have any deep dungeons. It has a lot of
mountains, though, and an interesting big world. You are seeking to avenge
your father, Fyde, who was killed by a mysterious man that people give you
clues about as you travel through the realm.

   1-2. EMULATION AND TRANSLATION

Currently the English translation patch for Deep Dungeon IV is bad. If you
try to go to Wares or to either of the Chi mountains, it sends you to "Gear,"
a nonsense dungeon. You also get people saying nonsense, and the Kosuko
Mountains are mislabeled. So the English translation is not worth it except
maybe to get your bearings with the original game. Fortunately the numbers
are still as English speakers would understand, and for those who hack the
RAM, hex bytes are still hex bytes.

Also, there is not much to do in this game. You can recognize people who
offer you a quest(asking yes/no) and those who give you experience for it. If
you know which bytes to watch, you'll know which quests you've completed,
too.

 4. WALKTHROUGH

   4-1. PENDATH WATER SUPPLY

Equip both items. Go to (12,5). Talk to the man to get the crystal. The
crystal is an auto-mapper, so it is not useful but it is handy. Go to Sorel.
Enter the door at (6,3) and talk to the old man. Be sure you've equipped your
material before going any further. You can run from pretty much any fight,
and you can just straight-up fight a bunch if you're equipped, but without it
you're toast. If you want, you can build up to the next level and rest,
beating up enemies in the forest that are hiding treasure. There's no rush to
go anywhere, but there's no real need to build up, either.

Go to Pendath Forest. Go south, west at the first turn, west all the way,
south, east, south along the past, west at the bend and follow the bottom
path til it loops and you are going south. Go 1E and there will be a snake.
Talk to it. That allows you to move the rock from its neck. Return to Sorel.
Return to (6,3) to get 600gold and 200experience. This is your first quest,
and it'll get you a few levels. You can rest now if you want. It's cheap
enough.

   4-2. PENDATH TREASURE CAVE

For your next quest, you will go to Esto. It is south along the east edge of
Pendath. You will have to turn 2W 2S 2E. Then go to (6,11) south in Esto and
accept the quest. You will get a key. Return to Pendath.

The treasure cave is tricky to get to. You may need some endurance. And it
takes a while to bump around in there, so you may wish to get to level 5
before going further. It is not hard to. You can win pretty much any fight in
the forest. Don't worry about getting better gear for right now. You will be
able to pile money up later.

Go south as before, then west, but turn north when you get the chance. Head
west once at the top. There is a loop 2S 2W 2N and then you should go south
along the edge. You will eventually get to the treasure cave. It may take a
few times to get through, so be patient. I would say you should just flee any
time you get into combat. If you're low on hit points, remember the first
spell will always cure hit points.

Floor it north. Turn east at the top T and then turn south. Go all the way
south and through the door, west til you hit a big wall. Then go up through
the door and you will hit a teleport.

There is treasure directly east. The door 2N of that has a tough fight with
someone who can execute critical hits, so you'll want to avoid that, but the
one 4N is another teleport. It will lead to the end of a winding corridor.
You can take that and you will encounter some ghosts, and there's no shame if
you run from them. Further in the winding corridor, there is slime and a
gack, which is easy to beat. There's a door up ahead, and you have a choice
of what to do here. You can detour to the east, with another fight and
treasure 2N of that. Then you can come back.

You can use the key the old man gave you to open the door to the south. The
text here is birds singing. You don't have the Solomon Ring yet, so you can't
hear what they have to say. That's okay, though. You just need to go through
the door to get the strongbox(S, W) and then take the teleport south of that.
It will dump you 2W of the exit, so you can just walk back east.

Now take the long trek home-south at first, then wrapping around the west and
north edges. It's really up to you if you go to Sorel or Esto on the way back
to rest. You may be low enough on hit points to want to stop at Sorel.

But once you're rested, it is a short walk to Esto and the old man, who gives
you Scale Armor and the extra experience. ??

??what about regeneration ?? don t buy scale

   4-3. THE HERB QUEST

Cadaas is next. It is right behind Esto. Just exit Esto to choose it. Then
you need to go to the temple at (6,5) and face north and talk to the second
guy, who tells you that there is a sickness, and they need a herb to cure it.
That herb is in the North Chi Mountains. Those are a bit far away.

So you will want to to Tafur. From Esto, it is north, west-south and back
east around the loop. But you go south at the branch. That gets you to the
Kosuko Mountains. Go one south, then north at the first T, east at the
second, and south at the third. Follow the path and go west at the T, then
south and west to the exit. That will get you to Tafur.

From Tafur, you can exit to the North Chi Mountains. There are not many
planned encounters in your way here, though you may get caught. Be prepared
to flee. Go west at the first T, east at the next, then east at the next two.
Turn west after the path bends south. Talk to the fairy and follow that path.
You can just keep talking to her as she pops up. Turn south at the two
branches. Eventually you will get to the end. You can get the herb and
retreat, which will take a while, but you know the way back.

West, west, north, west, north, west, east at the branches. Now return to
Cadaas if you want, and you will get a nice bonus for completing that quest!

Return to Cadaas temple. Enter and talk to the 2nd guy. +2400 EXP.??

??can you start the next quest

4-4. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN

There are a lot of places to go from Tafur. Go see King Roramu first. Talk to
him twice. The first time you get a permit. The second time, you get a letter
and a quest to visit the East Country. Go to the South Chi Mountains. This is
a bit tricky, so you want to be sure your game is saved. Getting there is not
so bad. Just go east when you first can and keep pushing east. The big
problem is that you will hit two encounters you probably can flee from, but
it is not certain.

On the other side of the mountain, the East Country has a guard who stops
you. Give him the letter, and he will let you pass. Talk to the king in the
house right behind him. Now return to Tafur and Roramu. You may wish to save
before doing so, again. You will get credit for another quest. ??

4-4-1. ?? GET KAREV TO GAIN EXPERIENCE, MAYBE

4-5. THE GREAT EASTERN GOLD RUSH

Now you can pile up the gold here by going to the miscellaneous shop in
Tafur(5,4) and offering to bring a merchant along on a quest to the East
Country. Run through the S Chi Mountains and back. You can just talk to the
guards, and if you got nosy and noticed another was behind the first guard,
well, you can go talk to him, too! Then when you return, the quest is
complete. But guess what? You can complete it again. And again. The gold you
get is random, from 500 to 1100 by my count, but it adds up pretty quickly to
awesome armor.

Talk to the East Country King.

After you've completed one East Country trade route, you can go to Horus. You
can do as many as you want to raise your gold, but you don't really need to.
You can run past the critical encounters most of the time, so if you want to,
you might as well. Then you can buy a super item and not worry about the
encounters.

     4-6. HORUS

With this done the Horus quest opens up. It is rather complicated, as person
B doesn't talk until you met person A, and so forth. So if you forget to save
and get killed and restart, you may wonder why people are not saying the
right things.

Here is what to do. If you are still alone, get Karev, as he is a useful ally
against all the enemies.

First, Horus is behind Cadaas. Talk to the elder, (4,6) or south of the
entrance. That starts the quest.

Second, go to the Wares Mountains and explore. While there are not many
branches, they do take forever, so it is a good idea to plan things out.

I would recommend actually ignoring the quest at first and looting a Knight
Shield. Go north and, at the top, west and back down. Take a west at each
branch. There are two. Eventually you will hit a dead end. It is a teleport.
Turn around and get the chest once you are zapped. Run through the fight and
you are teleported south. The treasure was near the exit, but the teleport
guarded it. Just go south to the edge and west along the edge. You probably
need to see an inn after that. To get back, go 5N from the SE corner. 2W S 2W
3N 2E 4N and north along the east side. Then when the path turns back west,
take it. Turn east at the T and go south. Follow the bend and you will go SW
to meet the dragon. Talk to it.

There is a teleport square just south, so take it and then head west to exit.
Go to Cadaas and talk to the men at ?? so that they will help you lift the
stone from the dragon's neck.

Go back and talk to the dragon again. He is released! Return to Horus, then
talk to the elder, and you will get a monster bonus. 24000 exp.

   4-7. KARIM TOWER

The next order of business is the tower next to Cadaas. It is only 4 levels,
but you have a good deal of running around. The procedure is to find the blue
key, defeat Karim, get the red key and Black Hat, rescue Eleck, and exit. The
logistics are tough even if the mapping may not be.

Follow the winding path until you are going west and there is a door on your
right. There's an encounter on the other side, but they are fighters, so even
if you can't run, they are easy. 2W 4S at the end of the hallway, and you are
on level 2.

On level 2 you need to find the blue key and then manage a teleport. Go
south, east to the bend, north and east and through the north door. Go down
the east passage and through the door. You have a fight and then you get the
blue key. Now you can retreat and, if you want, use the key on the jail cells
in the area. The people give information you don't really need, seeing as you
can just plow through the area and pick up information as it comes. You can
also go back down the stairs if you want. There are more people in jails
there. But they don't have much to say, either. So from the blue key, go
east, north, west, south, west, south, and 2 west. Go north through the door
and hit the teleport. Go to the north edge and turn left. Use the blue key on
the door, and it will open. Go through it and take the stairs to level 3.

Here go east, south, east, south, east and north. You will find stairs to
level 4, and then you can go 2 north to fight Karim. He will eventually go
down. Just be sure to heal a lot. Behind him, a chest holds a red key. Get
that key and retreat to the stairs, but don't go down. Follow the passage to
a T-intersection with doors. You have a fight there, and you can use the red
key on either door. Go north for a random fight, a treasure chest behind that
and a black hat beyond that.

Now go back down the stairs to level 3 and backtrack. West, north, west, 2
north and east. One of your party may be paralyzed, and if it is the one with
the red key, give it to the other guy to use if need be. Or better yet cast
un-paralyze after finding Eleck on the other side of the door. Now there are
two ways down and, in fact, retreating is easier. Go back to level 4 and then
back to the T. Go south this time. You'll drop down a series of short
passages to level 1. Go east through a long passage and use the red key at
the end. You'll see a cut scene and you should wind up at the Kosuko
Mountains.

You may wish to come back to Wares to win fights for some good experience,
and you also will want to get the Mage Clothes in treasure in the northwest
of level 1(use the blue key.) Be sure you loot the place thoroughly before
dropping your keys.

   4-8. RYUU CAVE

Go south to Tafur. Then see the Alchemist. He'll have something new to say to
you, about a ceremonial sword. Listen to what he has and note you have a
rainbow gem in your inventory. From the Alchemist's, go to the Ryuu
Mountains. All the way north, east and north leads to the Ryuu Cave. You'll
worry about the rest of the mountains later.

Strictly speaking, all you need to do is to get the ceremonial sword, which
is not hard. It's a bit tougher to get out, though. Follow the spiral and
take the first door you see. Go north to the intersection, where you'll have
a small dialogue. Use the rainbow gem if you like here, but what you really
need to do is go east and use the rainbow gem at the wall where you see "The
Lost Road."

That opens the passage to the honorary sword. Go all the way east and take
the third door on the right. Go straight forward through the next door and
follow the passage to the end. You'll get the sword just before the dead end.
Then you can go one square more into the teleport.

Now you have treasure 2E S and then north, east and south at the first
opportunity. The teleport you want is in the southeast of the area, so go
east along the top and hard south. Go south and then follow the zigzagging
passage til you get to a T. Go all the way east and then follow the spiral
inwards. That gets you out.

This solves the Ryuu Cave, but there are a few other things you can do which
will pay off. Dolru the Dragon is tough, but if you beat him, there is Dragon
Plate behind him. While you may not be able to win this right away, you will
need to in order to verify you're good enough to take on Saima.

A second set of teleports leads to a potion, but it is not really worth it.
Turn west and north at the rainbow place and follow the path to one teleport,
then another, then go down the west side.

Go back to the Alchemist, who will trade Honorary Sword for the Talisman.

   4-9. RYUU MOUNTAINS

Now you can take care of the Ryuu Mountains. You need to go north from the
start and east at the first turn. Go north at the next T, and you eventually
get to a dead end. Give the fairy the talisman to clear the way. Follow the
passage and go south(left) at the first turn. When you hit a left-right
intersection, there is treasure to the left, but you will want to go right
along the north edge to get to Mando Lake and the mandrake. Search for it.
The game has a bug, at least in my version, as if you use the mandrake right
away, you get the Giga Blade right away. But you can go back to the Alchemist
and take care of that anyway.

There is not much else in the Ryuu Mountains other than the usual treasure in
dead ends.

You'll notice once you get back, there are new characters. You have a player-
character swap, and now you'll want to talk to the King twice. Then talk to
the Alchemist. ?? The point is to get item #48, the Cloister Method, in your
inventory. Once you've got that, you will be able to work around the spiral
in the Elm Mountains without being teleported to the outside.

4-10. ELM MOUNTAINS AND DEVIL CASTLE

The Elm Mountains, as mentioned before, are a spiral on the outside. Then you
take the second left when you finally have a choice, then turn left at the
next T. That leads to Devil Castle.

Devil Castle isn't very big, but its monsters definitely are. Talk to the guy
who greets you. He just gives the standard disclaimer about how it's an evil
place and you're going to die violently.

Technically all you have to do is get to the big guy and bop him, but that
might take some time. So here is how to beef your party up and only lose a
little time. Go south from the entrance, turn right and hit the teleport.
Follow the passage and turn. There's a magic shield through the door. Retreat
and go left at the T to a teleport.  Go forward, and go right at the wall
into another teleport. Follow the passage to the end. The next dead end leads
to level 2.

Go forward, take the door to the right, take the next door, and go to the end
of the passage. Get the elf armor. Now retreat through the door and go north,
then west at the T. There is a stair at the end of the corridor.

Level 3 is only 8x8, and you just need to go S 2W 3N. Bingo! Level 4 is also
not tough. You just go all the way south, east, and north. Your goal is
behind the door. The final battle is rather difficult, and you need to have
your guys leveled up so that Saima does not hit them every turn. I got wiped
out at level 23. There are lots of places to go beating up enemies once
you've gotten the really good armor and such. So do that, and around level 35
I think you'll be ready for this guy. You need to cast a lot of heal spells,
too. He has 1002 hit points, and you can do maybe 100 damage per turn. That's
a lot of attacks for him.

 6. VERSIONS/CREDITS

1.0.0: sent to GameFAQs 11/25/08 with walkthrough directions complete. I
still need to specify how to build levels, etc., and who precisely does what.
But the whole process has started.

Thanks to GameFAQs for being, well, THERE.
Thanks to the NES completion project in general.
Thanks to odino for translations(a ton).

Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog,
Lagoona, Da Hui, StarFighters76 and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in
his current not-yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his
gang, but I want him to be part of mine.
