01.)                    INTRODUCTION                                 G0100
===============================================================================

Welcome to 'Daisenryaku' for the NES, released by Bothtec in 1988. This is the
first in many games of the series although it was originally not on the NES.
The game was only released in Japan but a fan-translation exists to play the
majority in English (I had some trouble with the results screen which may just
be on my machine).

Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy!

B         Cancel
SELECT    Cycle through menu options
START     Start game
D-Pad     Move around between options and on the hex grid, use two directions
         at the same time to go Up-Left and so on.

Main Menu:
``````````
You have three green squares here. The top square has a map selection (there
are 30 in total), Continue is for loading a saved game, and Cash. Cash is the
amount of money given to a player at the start of the turn per production
facility (airfield, city, home city). The two squares below are for selecting
whether the Blue and Red players are CPU or User controlled. Cycle through the
option with the Up/Down button and use SELECT to change. The Cash amount is
change with the A button and cycles from 50 to 100. Press START on the start
the battle.
Map View:
`````````
The map view shows you a few dozen hex grids. You can move around between them
with the direction keys. The white border around the hex grid is the active
grid.

The default menu shows the current turn number, the rate (production cost, this
can change randomly), the elevation and each player's cash and production
facility count.

Press A to bring up a menu.

MOVE will move the unit. This command is always available but the success will
depend on the unit's movement ability such as empty spaces around it or
terrain surrounding it, or if it has moved this turn already.

PRODUCE will bring up a list of units you can produce if you are in a
production facility right now. Note that all units here are not available
because you are either in the wrong place (airfields only build planes and
cities only produce ground units) or because you do not have enough cash. The
game will simply return to the map view without any action if that is the
case.

SUPPLY will refuel the selected unit from the nearby Refueler or
City/Airfield. If there is no available refueling station then the game will
complain about it.

SUPPLY ALL will supply all available units in one go.

HOME will "home in" on the Home city.

UNIT CHART is the most important battle view. This gives you an overview of
all your units:
 Units = Type of unit
 U = Amount of unit members (max 10)
 X = X coordinate of the unit
 Y = Y coordinate of the unit
 FU = Amount of fuel left
 TRN = Transport moves
 MOVE =
        GO = Has not made a move this turn yet
        END = Finished its move this turn
        GAS = Refueled this turn, can still move
        TRN = On a transport

Done ends your turn

Options gives you some more commands:
 Switch Sides will flip you and the opponent's control.
 Save Game will save the game you can reload from the main menu (Continue)
 Surrender will give up the battle, you lose
 B.G.M (Background Music) can be toggled on/off
 Sound can be toggled on/off
 Fight has three options
       Real = normal fight display
       Fast = removes animations
       Auto = seems to be same as real

Gameplay:
`````````
Your ultimate goal is to occupy the opponent's Home city. You also win the game
if the opponent has no units for more than 1 turn. You can only capture cities
and airfields with Infantry and Marines. You can still occupy the city with
another unit to prevent them from producing a unit here although this does
work so well for the home city (see below), aside from the terrain bonus you
get.
At the start of each turn you get 1x the amount stated in the options ($50~100)
 from your home city plus x times this amount depending on how many cities and
 airfields you hold. For example, if you have 2 cities and an airfield, you
 will get 4x the amount (Home, 2 Cities, 1 Airfield). You always start your
 turn you start at your Home city. You can quickly move to your units with the
 Unit Chart option.
===============================================================================
03.)                    UNITS                                        G0300
===============================================================================
The maximum unit count is 32. Units in cities will replenish unit numbers.
Cities only produce ground units. Airfields only product air units. You can
also produce on the hex grid around the Home city, meaning you can produce more
in this area of the map than a regular city and airfield.
Each unit uses fuel as they move (1 unit of fuel per grid). Marines/Infantry
use fuel too, and so does the Refueler! You will need to supply them with fuel
to avoid losing the unit for good. Running out of ammo just means you cannot
attack or defend yourself with this unit and are open to be attacked by anyone
without shooting back.
You can supply units if a Refueler is adjacent or they are home/city/airfield.
You can also choose to supply all from the menu (which is recommended) which
will refuel all units automatic from available supply points
There are 14 types of units, 6 aviation, 4 ground vehicles, 2 non-combat
vehicles and 2 ground units (soldiers).
04.)                    TERRAIN                                      G0400
===============================================================================
There are 11 types of terrain and for home, city and airfields they are
color coded blue or red. There are also light blue neutral cities and airfields
which anyone can claim as theirs without any resistance.
Air units do not have any terrain type stopping their advances. They do,
however, gain the territory bonus. Movement costs and terrain bonus are listed
below.
----------------------------------------------------------.
movement cost.
===============================================================================
05.)                    BATTLES                                      G0500
===============================================================================
If you start adjacent to an enemy unit you will always be given the attack
 option first. Press B to cancel if you do not want to attack, press B again
 to cancel the "Move Done" command and then move the unit around instead.
If you come across an enemy in your path you either have to fight or end the
 move. You can also cancel the move all over and find another route instead.
When attacking, each unit has six types of stats to calculate their
effectiveness.
Atk is the attack power of the unit
Exp is the experience gained from previously fighting battles
Avo is the unit's evasion
Ter is the terrain bonus
Com is the hit rate
Num is the unit count
Each unit has different effectiveness against another. This chart shows such
relationships.
@ is highly effective
O is effective
^ is minute effective
x has no effect
06.)                    STRATEGY                                     G0600
===============================================================================
* When the game ends you are presented with a screen showing how many turns it
 lasted, who produced how much etc. There is nothing special after beating the
 30th map.
* Build cheap Iroquois and man them with Infantry or Marines and go out to
 quickly take over new production facilities from either neutral or enemy
 positions. This is an old trick that was still used in many other games like
 Command and Conquer
* Use better units as you get more income, they are more expensive for a reason
 and the cheap ones normally do not cut it unless you really apply pro
 tactics.
* Gepard are good defenders against ground troops, they will hold out long
 enough to produce more stronger units if you are afraid of being invaded any
 time soon.
* The CPU likes to produce Gepard, you can throw A-10s at the CPU and it will
 struggle to keep up.
* You can use Iroquois helicopters to block the advancing group troops. They
 are cheap and will hold out long, maybe not even being able to shoot them
 down anyway.
