Please do not reproduce this FAQ for profit without my prior consent. If you
write a polite e-mail to me referring to me(and this FAQ) by name, then I
will probably say OK. But if I ignore you that means no--and I am bad about
answering e-mail. Sorry.

http://faqs.retronintendo.com is the NES FAQ Completion Project. It's
inspired me to look at some games I never would have, otherwise. Have a look
at it and see all we've done!

I have created maps for this game and they have been submitted at GameFAQs. I
refer to them in this FAQ, and I think it is a lot easier and more
interesting to do so than to follow/write directions in some cases, for me
and for you. Pictures being worth 1K words, and such.

 1. INTRODUCTION

Columbus: Ougon no Yoake has a great premise. Written in 1992(!), it features
you as Columbus, who wants to gain enough fame to hire a boat to travel to
Zipang(Japan), a land of untold wealth. To do so, you need to take a boat
around Europe and explore dungeons and talk to people and find hidden
villages, also gaining companions and crew members on the way. This is a neat
idea, but the execution is wanting.

First, the land confrontations are too tough early on. And the sea
confrontations get tedious and happen much too frequently. There are three
sorts: straight combat, an encounter with a pirate ship where you can
run/fire/get in combat, and a storm where you must dodge logs and typhoons,
or your ship takes damage. So I just rustled up a bunch of cheats to make
this part of the game easy, and it was rather fun.

One of the other big problems of the game is that you need to talk to person
X to find location Y. Not to get the information--the game checks to make
sure you really did talk to that person. So if you talk to them, get killed,
and search for Y, it won't be there.

Even when you start to get powerful--and there is an inflection point after
which things are very easy--it takes a while to slog through all the combat
with the game as is.

I would not have been able to play this game without the translation patch
provided at romhacking.net and aishsha for all the hard work creating the
translation.

http://www.romhacking.net/trans/1285/

You know, it's kind of amusing that I am playing a game where you look for
Japan and find America, and it's actually a game that was in Japanese and has
been translated to English.

Oh, also, for a full review, there's a good one by Pluvius at GameFAQs, and
it's illustrated at lameazoid.com.

 2. CONTROLS

If you are emulating, as you probably are, then there are a lot of parts of
the game you'll want to speed up. Hit ` for that. This helps speed through a
lot of combats. Also, how long you wait to move can affect the sort of random
encounter you get at sea, as if you save your state, the randomizer will
still force you into combat after X moves. This is another reason to move as
straight as possible.

(A) is your general action button, and it allows you to
--talk: if a person is walking from or to a square, they won't hear you
--seek: you must be facing upwards for this to have any effect at all. It's a
weird quirk of the game. But knowing this makes other parts of the game
easier.
--item
     --gear (wear/drop)
wear applies to weapons as well as armor.
     --misc (wear/drop)
     --map
The map is counted as a miscellaneous item, of which you can have eight.
Having the compass allows you to see where exactly on the map you are. Given
that the compass also lets you out of a cave, it's very handy.
--duel(only with knights, who actually look like green aliens and are present
in castles0
Push (B) to go back on the menus.
[select] shows your overall stats. Push [select] again to cancel.
[start] allows you to save, load, toggle ManTalk/AutoTalk (manual and auto),
toggle number and star stats, or return. [B] also returns.

 3. STRATEGIES AND LEVEL TABLES

Note you need 10 experience more to get to the next level, every 10 levels.

The formula is (T^2+3T)/2 + (T+20)*O til level 90
T=tens
O=ones

If you get more than one level with one combat(not likely) then you get the
boost of both levels right away. If you've cheated up your experience to,
say, 9900, then you're kicked to level 99 right away.

 4. TOWNS AND SUCH

   4-1. BOOKS

Marco's Book offers clues. However, you don't have to use it to activate the
next clue.

1. Board a ship and battle for Exp up to Level 2.
2. You need to succeed at least in 1 imaginary voyage to graduate.
3. Raise your fame to get aid from the King.
4. Go west with a Scope and the Scarab. But you have to lift the curse of the
Scope to cross the eternal sea.

The Journal offers clues, too, a few more actually, and more about specific
places to go than about general things to do.

1. Go to Felipa in Granada with a golden ring.
2. Start with Tunis and Shadow Town! Start with statues to find the way.
3. Viennese church holds the key to the Light!
4. Kyivan church holds the key to the Dream!

6. Pass the cave southwest of Kyiv to find the Town of Illusion.
7. You'll need a royal ship and Scarab to get to the underground Shrine of
Atlantis.

 5. WALKTHROUGH

Columbus doesn't force any trickery out of you. Combats aside, the basic way
through the game is as follows:

a. go to a town
b. talk to everyone in there and search every statue
b2. talk to torches in every castle tower you find
c. take a boat/path to the next town or castle
d. if you ran out of places to walk/sail, go through a dungeon to the next
one
e. be sure you save after each town, as the game flags if you talk to person
X who told you about location Y
f. repeat til done
g. get a big boat, and 2 important itens, then use them to sail the Atlantic
to get to Atlantis and then the New World

   5-0. GAME VARIATIONS

Normal is just a regular RPG.

History times your progress.

Sailing is nice practice and lets you see other parts of the game before you
get there. For instance, if you would like to find Rome, but you are not sure
where it is, take a route from Rome to somewhere. Routes in sailing are
somewhat random. If you choose one, you can't do it over again. This is what
I got to start.

1. London to Amsterdam
2. Lisbon to Barcelona
3. Granada to Genoa
4. Rome to Lisbon
5. Barcelona to Tripoli
6. Barcelona to Venice

London to Amsterdam is very easy. You just go a bit east along the shoreline,
and you should make it with no trouble.

You fail if you are killed on the way, or if you land on a shore that is not
the destination city, no matter how close you get.

In general, you want to save after each big event, whether it's your save
state or if you want to save to disk or the .sav file.

   5-1. GENOA

You start out in Genoa. You have 20 gold to your name and dreams of
exploration in your heart, but where to start?

The first thing to do is go to the northeast corner and search for Marco
Polo's book. Buy the wooden armor from the armor shop in the NE. Don't worry
about a weapon.

Item: Misc: Marco Polo's Book. This gives you useful information about what
to do on the boat. In general, Marco Polo's Book will help you through the
game by giving hints at the right time. It will tell you where to go next.

Item: Gear: Wear the Wooden Gear. That will get you some sort of protection
against enemies. You'll find another cool item later.

Now go south to the harbor and walk onto the boat. You don't want to go out
into the world, because you simply don't have the equipment or healing power
yet.

   5-2. THE BOAT QUEST

Now the boat quest can be rather tricky. The object is to get to level 2
without getting killed. Along the way, you will want to find the wooden cane,
which heals you, and also get the journal, which offers a clue of what you
need to do.

The stairs down are to the left, and there is a pirate to the south who says
you need to solve Giovanni's quest. Same with the guy above. The guy above,
actually, is Giovanni, but he likes to talk in the third person, which kind
of stinks.

There are some other guys here. The guy on the bottom allows you to fight
pirates, the guy above directs you to the old man in the hold(level 3) where
you will get 5 experience if you talk to him, and the guy on the left whines
nobody comes back from the north sea. By the way, the box 4L of the guy who
gives you the hold quest has a good potion. Search that box before you leave.

The 5 experience is kind of nice, but you increase the random factor of tough
fights if you go in for it, and you're better off fighting the pirates. So
take the stairs down. Go to the room in the south. Go 1 south of the left of
the barrels there and face up. (A) and switch to Seek. You get a wooden cane,
which is handy when you need to heal up. But it has limited uses, so you need
to be careful in combat. There's one more item to get. Go into the next room
left and search the left barrel. A throwing knife! These are very very good.
You can attack from range with them. In fact, having these at range is better
than a more powerful item with less range, since enemies always start so far
away.

With these items, you can win combats relatively quickly. Without them,
you're in trouble.

Now about combats. They are tricky here. For random ones, there is no shame
in fleeing from more than one enemy if you are not at full strength. In fact
it's probably a good idea--back away from them, and rest before you exit the
combat field. You also want to flee combats from toxic jellyfish, who can hit
you up for quite a bit. Duck down and run out of the way.

If you stay and fight, be sure your stamina is up when an enemy is running at
you--so rest if it gets low. You get 5 physical moves before it resets. One
useful trick is to move up to start. Then, if they try to throw knives at
you, you are out of the way. And what's better, they may do so at close
range, giving you a free move. You can also rest, and the enemy will come at
you so you get the first hit on. Every bit counts, even though the wooden
cane heals you. By the way, if your cane runs out, don't drop it. Sell it
later. ??

Also, if you are obviously winning and the enemy stands no chance of
grappling with you, rest. Or if you are fleeing and can't be caught, rest.
You can't rest outside of combat, and if you need to flee the next time or
get a quick start, it's best to be prepared.

You should try to avoid using the wooden cane in the middle of combats unless
you are hit with a missile weapon, which you should be able to avoid doing
for the most part. Your guy turns blue if he goes below 5 hit points, but you
can also check your status after 4 hits, or count in your head. I recommend
healing when you go under 6 points.

You need to beat 10 pirates to get to level 1. You don't need to get to level
2 for the next bit, but it's a pretty tough fight, so you might as well. In
fact, you may even want to get to level 2.

To find enemies, just walk around. But for pirates(the easy combats,) I
recommend doing so on level 1, as you can talk to a fellow who gets you
constant pirate combats, or by the stairs up on level 2. "Sonnie, it's time
you learn how pirates think and behave..."

At level 2 of the hold, take the stairs down to level 3. Be sure you're
healed and rested. Go to the right and down. In the corner, you'll find some
enemies--3 ghost pirates. The usual strategy against one enemy doesn't really
work here, so just grit your teeth and fire at the enemy who is nearby. He'll
go down quickly even if you have to heal from his lightning bolts. Then move
down and fire some more. Then rest up as the enemy comes at you. It's worth
it to move around him so you are above him as before--otherwise he may gun
you down with lightning bolts. Use the wooden cane if you're worried. The
ghost pirates have good armor class, so they'll take longer than pirates. But
they have fewer hit points.

Once you get 40 experience you are at level 2. You may wish to go now, and
there's little use staying, since experience is not retained. Gold is sort of
nice, but you'll get enough of that anyway along the way. Go to Giovanni in
NE of level 1 of the boat to get your reward. You'll have a "Giova Sword"
(Giovanni's sword) in your inventory now, which is nice to equip when trying
to convince people to join you.

5-3. LISBON AND THE NAVIGATION QUEST

Once you solve the boat quest, you are dropped off in Lisbon. The goal here
is to get a free boat from the king. To do that, you need to pass your course
at sea school, which is next to the sword shop. When you get there, you will
be sent on an imagined sailing quest. It's a bit long, but fortunately,
there's no way to die outright.

Let's look at the obstacles you'll encounter first.

     5-3-1. BASICS OF SAILING

You can run from pirate ships--just go hard east or west before the combat
screen starts, and when one fires, go up. You'll eventually escape. You can
keep the sound on to hear when a ship fires, and then you can move away from
it then. But even if the pirates grapple, it is not too bad to run away.

For storms it's best to head east until you are obviously going into a mess
of logs and typhoons. Then you can push down when needed, to avoid being hit
by a diagonal log, and you can back up to the west, because you're not trying
to get to the edge of any board. It's a timed survival exercise. When the
water starts clearing and you see it mixed with different icons, you know you
are close. You may also run into a few islands along the way. They do not
block typhoons and logs, but they block you. It shouldn't happen if you go
mostly horizontal.

Also, if the helm breaks, you can't move. With a hull strength cheat, this
doesn't matter. Without it, you may be dead in the water(heh.) This seems
like a random event based on if something hits you, but it happens rarely.
There's also a problem with getting teleported/pushed far away, to west of
Spain, or near Venice, which is nasty. And another reason to use save states
continuously, since there's no real way to wind up losing the game unless you
go to the Atlantic too soon.

Other than that there is not much to do. You can stick to coastlines, but
that has its own risks, as they move back and forth. You want to get places
in as few moves as possible As on the ground, combat occurs at specific
randomly generated move numbers that aren't affected by reloading save
states. So it's important to be efficient.

Now I've had quests to go to Tunis, Barcelona, Venice, Tripoli and
Alexandria, and so it looks pretty random what you get. If you want, you can
keep trying, or reloading the save state, til you get quests to go to
Barcelona or Tunis.

Barcelona/Tunis nicer than Tripoli nicer than Venice nicer than Alexandria.

Granada is above, to the north, when you pass the straits. Barcelona is NE
along the coast. For the African cities, Tunis is first, then Tripoli, and
then you go east and hit the edge of the Mediterannean and there is
Alexandria! If you fail, or you exit at a place that isn't your city, you go
back to the library. For Venice, pass Tripoli, then go back north and shoot
the gap between Italy and Greece.

You can also check my world map to find out what is where. But without a map,
try to leave 3 squares between you and the shallow water to make for fewer
moves--and you can go east, and when you run up against land to the
east(Turkey) go south to the town there. That's Alexandria.

The game map doesn't quite imitate the world map, though. You need to go
through the straits of Gibraltar(follow the coastline south and go east) and
then go east a lot. Go along the bottom and all the way south once you see a
town. If you enter the town, it will say Voyage Failed, because that's not
Alexandria. So you need to go south til you hit land, then east. There'll be
a town with an entry to the west. Go there. That's Alexandria. You'll be
kicked back to Lisbon.

You don't have to see the king to get a for-real ship, which is a good thing,
since he's in a rather tangly castle to the north, and he thinks you're a
real loser right now anyway. So just go to the dock and there's a boat
waiting for you. Exit out the port to the south.

Alonso and Barto are nice. Barto can shield your main hero from the enemy,
and you can win quite a few fights because you should have a ton of HP. The
gold you win does not carry back to you. So you can and should just try to
run fron anyone who runs at you. If you need to flee, the battle ends when
you flee--don't worry about the other guys. Oh, you start with 100 hit
points, too.

When you win, you gain 5 fame and 20 experience. That is a good start. The
King of Lisbon also gives you a for-real ship.

Now, side quest below or no, the first thing to do is to train your crew as
well as you can once the boat leaves the harbor. Do so until the sailors
refuse to, then continue with your voyage. The first time you try, you should
make it to level 3. You may risk a mutiny, but that's okay. If you quell the
mutiny by defeating a few corsairs, you go back down to 1/2 the former mutiny
points. Then you can pump up the training again and repeat. You can gain
levels pretty quickly that way.

     5-3-2. RECOMMENDED SIDE QUEST

This side quest makes the rest of the game a lot easier, but it's something
you wouldn't know unless you played the game straight through. You will want
to take the boat north, east 15 squares, then north again. Enter Ireland on
the SE coast and head upwards. There will be a 2x2 lake. Search NE of it, and
there you go--God Clothes! They are very powerful. You won't have to worry
about pretty much any attacks for the rest of the game. Then you can head
back south to Lisbon and proceed as before. Your defense seems lousy after
this, but the enemies never actually hit you.

   5-4. THE RING QUEST

This one's pretty easy. You will want to leave Lisbon and go through the
Straits of Gibraltar again. You have the same encounters as before, though I
would recommend running from all enemies. Don't let the pirates grapple with
you. Then go past the first city--that is Granada--and northeast up the
coast. The first city you will see is Barcelona. Enter it. Go north up the
docks then all the way east. Go into the garden to the north and talk to the
old codger. He gives you a golden ring. Now return to Granada and exit the
town to the north. Just like Lisbon, there is a palace. This one's pretty
easy to navigate, though. Just go north and talk to the girl there. She is
grateful for your ring and marries you. This quest gets you 10 fame. That's
pretty good.

   5-5. WHAT NEXT?

So you've married Felippa and you have a good chunk of fame. You'll need a
bit more to talk to the kings. You can't get fame until you improve your
experience, and experience is hard to come by. If you don't mind cheating out
a lot of the game to move ahead, I have a detour that works well here. It
assumes you have the God Clothes.

5-5-1. THE BLACK SEA CHEAT DETOUR

Go east along the coast of Africa, then east from Tunis(a bit south) and turn
upwards at the small island. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be--it
doesn't match any island I was able to locate, though Cyprus is to the east.
Go up between Greece and Turkey then NE. At Constantinople, go north and
defeat the Dragoons. Now go and defeat them again--just move up and down.
Repeat til your fame is at 99. You can now, if you want, skip a lot of the
fights that give you fame later on. You can also skip having to run errands
for kings to make you famous. With your gold, pick up a scope for much later.
This is an awkward place to go to. In the NE edge of the Black Sea, you can
enter North Europe and skip to section 5-5-9, only you will be approaching
Kyiv and Vienna from the other side. You need to go NW to get to Kiev.

     5-5-2. REGULAR STUFF: SHADOW TOWN

One of the first things to do is to buy a compass. They are cheap in Granada.
They help you get out of dungeons easily, and they are worth it. If you have
the extra cash you should from beating up the enemies, this is a very good
buy. Now if you have the journal, it will tell you about Tunis and Shadow
Town. Now apparently someone in Tunis tells you about how the isle with
Shadow Town is to the east, but I couldn't find him. If you can, let me know.
I think it might be the grouchy guy, if you wear the Muslim Guard.

Anyway, just south of Tunis then all the way east is an island. It is south
of the west of Turkey. Stand on the SE grassland and search N. You'll find a
hidden town. In there, search the NE tomb to get a clue. It tells you to
touch the walls in the forest tower, which is in NE Europe. You need to have
talked to the statue to be able to use this clue. So save the game, or
whatever. Some guy is also walking around the north bit just waiting to give
you a White Gem, so take that, too.

You may wish to pick Korea up here. He's an awesome player-character at level
50. He can't have your armor, but you can shield him in combats. He can move
because he won't get exhausted. It should be enough to give him a throwing
knife. He probably also needs armor eventually.

     5-5-3. REGULAR STUFF: BUILDING UP

This is just a general overview, so the next few sections will detail how you
want to go about things. You can explore the countryside and beat up all
comers as you pump your level up, or you can go the route of the sailor,
training and quelling mutinies. You probably eventually want to go back to
Constantinople and pick up a scope, but that can wait a long time. You need
to be able to work your way through the dungeon north of Barcelona, and so
you need to build your guy up to probably level 20. This really won't take
that long if you pick your battles. There are a lot of places you can go to
to level up. Use your gold to buy potions so you can heal as you run through
the Barcelona dungeon. You'll probably want to flee from a lot of fights
where you have more than two enemies, and if you really want to push the
envelope, use save states often and/or cheats. But there are other side
things you can do.

You can also use a throwing knife as you go to a castle and just duel knights
repeatedly. As you get better, you will just mow them down right away, and it
will be easy.

     5-5-4. ITALY DUNGEON

Go east, pushing south when you can, til you get to a W-N-E t. Go west and go
down. Run from fights when possible. Go E N E N N W S W N W and you will
reach a tiled room. Search the door at the top for black gear. Then use a
compass to get out. Having the extra armor helps a lot with the Pyrenees
dungeon ahead. But you may wish to test your new armor/weapons out on the
countryside first.

You also might want to go to Tripoli, Alexandria and/or Constantinople to get
better armor first. And as always any extra gold you get should be going to
healing potions.

     5-5-5. HIRING PC'S

This is not strictly necessary, but it is nice. Around level 20 you will have
enough juice to bring other guys into the party. And given you don't divide
experience in this game, the other guys are very nice to have. Their downside
is that only one person can get god armor. Still, you can pick up player
characters as follows:

Who         Where       How good
Korea       Shadow      L50 $410
Ace         Alexandria  ???
Nickolas    Barcelona   ???
Bartholomeo Genoa       ???
Alonso      Granad      ???
Lisbon      Vincent     ???
Trian       Venice      ???
Daman       Tunis       ???
Cassy ??

     5-5-6. PYRENEES DUNGEON

North of Barcelona, you'll see a dungeon. As you get close, you'll see a
dungeon behind it. They're the same dungeon, really. This is just the easiest
non-cheat way to get to the mainland of Europe. Mountains block you from
going further from Spain or Italy.

This dungeon has a couple of fame fights in it. So if you haven't cheated,
you may wish to have Korea along at the very least. Still, flee from the
fights you can, if they are not trivial.

Follow the passage, go East at each T, and eventually you'll be in a big room
with a hole. Drop down it.

Now go to the south for a fight with Mamingu that gets you +3 fame. It's
worth a try, if you want to get your fame up. But if you just want to get to
the other side, go west and follow the path. There is a fight with mamingus
at the first T, and you cannot flee. Defeat them--this is a big one, so heal
as much as you can--and then go west, then turn up at the next T, and up at
the next. Stairs back up. It's pretty much one-way traffic here. Turn north
at the first T, then push east whenever you can. You should exit at the north
of the mountains.

5-5-7. PARIS IN THE THE 1490'S

Paris isn't so hot--you can search for a sword to sell in the SE, then you
can go buy more potions to heal. You'll need them, because you have another
fame fight.

There is a detour here for 2 fame fights--again, bring the potions, though I
would advise a quick run-up elsewhere to improve your fame. If you go south
at the crossroads outside Paris, there's a fight with Iron Giants at a dead
end. You can go back and turn right at the road dead end, then go down the
mountain path and east til you hit another fame fight with iron giants. These
guys aren't too bad, and you get +3 fame and some nice experience--probably
at least a level for Christopher.

Still you will probably get tired of this eventually. And when you do, off to
Amsterdam and London. You will find a boat in Amsterdam that you can take to
London with ease.

     5-5-8. LONDON

Lots of things to do here. Exit and go north past the rocks to the mountain
pass to fight 4 more iron giants for 3 fame. You can talk to the guys in the
temple to find out about the God Clothes, well sort of. And you can also find
wind clothes.

Later you may wish to go north to visit the monarch and you can build up your
fame, one point at a time, by taking the boat back to Amsterdam. You will
always have to go back to Amsterdam, because no other place is accessible by
boat via London. But you can't talk to the monarch right away. Your fame is
probably too low.

     5-5-9. THE NORTH EUROPEAN FOREST

When you've had enough of this fun, hook north and east over Denmark and land
south. Go to the woods to the east and enter the tower--go north, then west,
to spring a teleport that leads to a sealed area. Climb the stairs, talk to
the princess, and get a repair kit. Then climb back down.

Now stop off at Leipzig, which is east of Paris(the lower road.) Go to the
2nd floor, east side. There's a row of beds. Talk to the torch north of the
beds. This opens up the Lisbon castle door for later, which will be handy.

     5-5-10. VIENNA, KIEV AND...

Go south to Vienna. Talk to the priest, who will open up a clue for the
temple in the Town of Dream in Scandinavia. Then go east to Kiev and talk to
the priest there. Bam! You can now enter the town itself. Go back to your
boat and sail back west and north. There'll be shore NE of denmark. You'll
see two rocks, and you can search north below the SE one. That'll get you to
the Dream Town. Again, these are clues that you need to see in the game for
things to actually "work".

Here you can pick up Cloud Clothes by talking around, and you need to talk to
the guy in the temple so the game knows you can get to the Town of Light.
Also, search the SE tomb to get the Scarab.

     5-5-11. ROAMIN' IN RUMANIA

This part only seems moderately useful--I haven't gotten anything from it,
and it doesn't appear to change any game flags. So  Ithink you can skip this.

Go back to the north European shore as before. East of Vienna you will find a
dungeon. Enter it.

     5-5-12. TOWN OF LIGHT

Go back to Constantinople. If you came here via the Black Sea, this'll be
easy. If not, you have some backtracking to do. By now you may be able to
whip the sea dragons with your new armor that are guarding the black sea,
too, but in any case, Constantinople is not bad to find--it's detailed
elsewhere. (North of the town of Shadow.) Buy a scope if you haven't already.

To start your travels, go east and take the second path down. It will loop SW
and SE and E, then go N and back west. You will need to step on the bottom
square west of the rock, and you can just go all the way east and search the
rock to the north to see the town of light. You can use the revolving door
teleport to go north and get an Earth Mark, but I'm not sure what it's good
for other than clogging up your inventory.

Talk at both the temples so you are the chosen one and search the statue in
the SW so that the door to the Temple of Atlantis is unlocked.

     5-5-13. A ROYAL BOAT

Getting a royal boat is the next step. You have the scarab, and you should
have the fame to ask a king to give you a boat that can cross the atlantic.
Any monarch that will listen will do. But some boats are sturdier and faster
than others. If your fame is 99, you can go to the king from Kiev. The king
of Portugal requires only 25 fame to talk to, and his boat is not the worst.
You may need to persist, but he is

On defeating 4 mamingu and all the monsters mentioned below, the fame of 51
should allow you to get an Atlantic worthy boat. That's all you need if you
cheated your hull strength up. Still, there are a lot of fights to win for
fame. You can even run errands for the King of Portugal.

--N African dungeon has mamingu
--Black Sea bottleneck has dragons that recharge if you stay in the area
--monsters W of Vienna on the bridges
--bridges on roads E and N of Paris
--scorpions on isle S of Genoa
--London to Amsterdam, if you can talk to the King of England, is good. It's
only 1 fame point, but it is a very quick trip.

The Royal Boat is not too difficult. It looks just like Giovanni's Boat. The
mates are even in most of the same places, but you have no required
encounters. Just go talk to your shipmates on levels 2 and 3 and then go back
to the top and the first mate will say "To Zipang!" Now you are off.

You may wish at this point to hire sailors to get your crew to the maximum of
200. You can just walk into town, hire the same sailor 3 times, then walk out
again and repeat til you are at the maximum. You need to be persistent, as
even if you are at level 99, the sailor may turn you down. Another thing to
do is to go to Lisbon and search the door in the castle. Behind it, you'll
find a Wind Sword.

Stock up on potions(if you are playing fair) and then be ready to run through
the last bit. It's the biggest voyage you've made, but there aren't many side
trips.

     5-5-14. THE ATLANTIC

Sail west til the game says you may get lost if you go to the Atlantic. Save
a backup save-state if you are nervous. Then once in the Atlantic, use the
scarab. There are a lot of interruptions here, just like in Europe, but
there's no penalty for using the Scarab too much. It tells you what direction
to go next. There are some risks here--tempests guard the north and south
extremes, so you need a hint to get through.

Move about 16 squares west, use it, and repeat, until instead of "Go West" it
says "Go South." You are close to Atlantis now. Land there. There's a fight
as you get off the boat. Then enter the Temple of Atlantis.

     5-5-15. THE TEMPLE OF ATLANTIS

Go down the first three flights of stairs.  Go north, then west past the
fountain(no, you don't need to enter the door. But you need to be able to if
you wanted to.) Go north twice then east to what appears to be a throne room.
It's really an altar, though. Talk north when 1S of the altar, and it talks
back. The curse on your scope is lifted. Now you can exit, enter your boat,
and just sail west--the journal will tell you this, or you can use your own
sense of history to remember what Columbus did.

It's important to note that without visiting the altar, you would loop around
the world and miss America and come back to the Temple. I guess it's a bit
quicker proof that the world is round.

     5-5-16. AMERICA, **** YEAH!

It's a whole continent. It deserves its own segment. Even if it's not a big
segment. No matter where you go west, you'll wind up seeing America. Sail at
it, and before you get there, you will get the ending sequence.

Note that if you want a slightly different ending sequence where you haven't
married Felipa yet, set the 10 bit of byte 7a to 0(or the whole byte.) It's
rather amusing either way.

Congratulations, you've solved the game! This was a no frills walkthrough,
but I think the game probably had enough for you to keep busy with for a
while, even if you went with my gross cheat.

Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog,
Lagoona, Da Hui and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-
yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his gang, but I want
him to be part of mine.
Thanks to Pluvius for telling me where the Town of Shadow was, for telling me
you need to use the scarab AFTER getting in the Atlantic, and for his
lameazoid review.
Thanks to odino for pointing this game out to me.
Thanks to romhacking.net for hosting the patch.
Thanks to aishsha for creating it and for giving me pointers about the text
dump, and for listening to my suggestions for improving an already very good
patch--his reward for listening to the first? Even more pedantic corrections!
Also, thanks for the information about getting into the other castles,
*talking* to torches, etc.
