Bakushou!! Jinsei Gekijou is the first of several games for the Famicom based
on the Game of Life board game. There are four players (computer and human)
starting off as children, and working your way through schooling, adulthood,
and ultimately to retirement. The events that occur are random as movement is
determined by rolling a dice, but there may be some good benefits depending
on the outcome. The ultimate goal is to have the most money by the time you
reach the end of retirement. Thus, a bit of strategy and a lot of luck is
involved in making sure you make the right career choices (even while still
in school) and hoping everything works in your favor. It is a complex game,
but still enjoyable to play, so if this is your kind of thing, check it out.

================
General Gameplay
================

When you first start the game, you will first be asked how many human players
there are (1-4). After that, you can enter your name (up to four Kana
characters). Once you finish that, you can pick your gender by symbol, and
your blood type (A, B, O, AB). Next, you will go to a screen where you can
select the hair, eyes, and face of your character. Once you do that, press A
to choose the remaining players at random. Once four players have been set,
the game begins.

Since this is a life simulator, you start off as an infant. You work your way
through schooling, then onward to adulthood, and ultimately to retirement.
The game is complete when you reach the final Goal space at the end of your
retirement. Your ultimate goal is to end the game with the most money, and
how you fare through the game will determine this outcome.

Each player takes a turn rolling the dice to determine the number of spaces
they will move that turn (1-6). Movement occurs automatically, and the event
pertaining to the space you land on will randomly occur before the next
player gets a turn.

============
Infant Stage
============

The first six spaces of the game board are the infancy period. You will
definitely get an allowance as you proceed (500 Yen). The rest of the spaces
are normal spaces, which will generally boost your statistics. Up ahead is
the primary school. You must enter the school, even if you roll a high number
of spaces. When you get to the school, you will watch a quick scene and
receive a gift of money (the most you can get is 10,000 Yen by arriving
first; everyone else will get 5,000 Yen).

==============
Primary School
==============

You will go to a small side-board inside the primary school's walls. There
are two Test spaces towards the end, and a couple of Card spaces as well.
Once you get through the school (you can get by without taking any tests),
you will be given a monetary prize similar to before (get out first, you get
10,000 Yen; everyone else will get 5,000 Yen).

Continuing onward from the school, the allowance will rise to 2,000 Yen on
the Money space. There will now be a "?" space, which is a Free Event space.
Go there and you will have free reign of a small area, where walking to
certain locations will have a positive or negative effect on your character.

Cards
-----

Dream of visiting Mt. Fuji (free turn, roll again)
Family trip to Hawaii (Luck +3)
Find unexploded ordnance in garden (nothing happens, or lose half your money)
Get allowance for rice-planting (+5000 Yen)
New Year's gift money (+10,000 Yen)
You wet the bed, get scolded (Luck -3)

Test (ABC Shooting)
-------------------

In this game, you can move Left/Right along the bottom and shoot straight up
by pressing B (one shot at a time). A group of three letters will appear
above and move around for a few moments before leaving. They will shoot "?"
at you to attack; get hit and you lose. You need to shoot the letters in
order as follows: A > B > C > D > E > A, and so on. Each successive hit gets
you 10 points. Hit the wrong letter, you lose 10 points. Shoot the "7" when
it appears to freeze the letter movement for a couple of seconds.

If you play the ABC Shooting game, you will be graded depending on your score
in the game. The higher your score, the more Intelligence points your player
will earn, as follows:

Nothing: +/-0
25+ points: +1
50+ points: +3
75+ points: +4
100 points: +5

Event Space
-----------

Not too far along after the primary school stage, you will find your first
Event (?) space. Land there and you will go to a map of a small field of
sorts, where certain spaces trigger special events. A map of the area:

http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hde37001/life/shot/map.jpg

The events are as follows:

Box #1: +/- 1,000 Yen            ? #1: Physical Strength -2
Box #2: Physical Strength -2     ? #2: +10,000 Yen
Box #3: Physical Strength -2     ? #3: Physical Strength -2
Box #4: Nothing happens
Box #5: Physical Strength -1
Box #6: Physical Strength -2
Box #7: +/- 1,000 Yen

Shrine: Choose any one statistic to give a +3 boost to

You can only visit three event spaces before they are deactivated and you
must leave the area. The northeast path is the Goal, where you will meet your
grandmother. If you are the first person to pass through, you get 5,000 Yen,
otherwise you get 1,000 Yen.

Other Information
-----------------

In the primary school area, there is a hidden mini-game in one of the normal
spaces. In it, you run a 100m race against another player. Press A repeatedly
to run faster. The first person to the end wins.

Towards the end of the primary school area (just before the second Test
space), you can go to an arcade and play a game of Arkanoid. You control a
paddle and must knock a ball around to break the blocks above. Your Luck will
increase if you win.

When you get close to the middle school, there are special events hidden in
the normal spaces. In the baseball-themed one, if your Physical Strength is
at 3 or more, you will get Luck +2 and Physical Strength +2; otherwise you
will get Physical Strength -2.

There is also a singing-themed event where you will need to press A in time
with the song being played. Nothing is gained right now, but treat it like an
audition (and possible career option if you do well) for later.

Of course, when you get to the middle school building, you will enter it to
face a different map. If you get there first, you get 20,000 Yen and everyone
else gets 10,000 Yen.

=============
Middle School
=============

The map for the middle school sequence is similar to the primary school, but
there is now a Free Walk space in the middle. If you land on that ? space,
you will be able to pick a single statistic to give a +5 boost to. Choose
wisely! If you get to the end of the middle school track first, you will get
a 20,000 Yen prize; everyone else gets 10,000 Yen.

Once you leave the middle school, the course turns northward to the next
step, which is high school. Your allowance will go up to 5,000 Yen when you
pass the Money space.

When you get to the high school, this is when your Intelligence rating will
pay off. If you have a high enough Intelligence, you will be given money to
attend; otherwise, you will have to pay 300,000 Yen to proceed.

Cards
-----

Find a treasure vase (+100,000 Yen, Luck +2)
House fire (-3,000 Yen, lose next turn)
Play the lottery (if you win, Luck +5, +100,000 Yen; second prize is a Bike)
Step in feces (Luck -3, move back three spaces)
Study (Intelligence +3)

20+ points: +1
40+ points: +2
60+ points: +3
80+ points: +4
90+ points: +5
100 points: +6

Other Information
-----------------

In the middle school area, the second normal space is an event space. If you
are a male player, you will play baseball, while females play tennis. Your
Physical Strength can increase as a result. If you do well, this may lead to
a career right out of high school.

There is an event in the normal space just after the second middle school
Card space where you can play a Famicom system. If you have decent
Intelligence, you will win 20,000 Yen. If you have really high Intelligence,
you can win the 1,000,000 Yen prize!

Just after leaving the middle school area, the Normal space in the corner has
an arcade. You can play a game of Arkanoid there. You control a paddle and
must knock a ball around to break the blocks above. Your Luck will increase
if you win.

In the corner space just before the high school, you can enter into a Driving
Test. You simply need to race against other vehicles and win the race. Use A
to accelerate and B to brake. The prizes are 3,000,000 Yen for #1, 150,000
Yen for #2, and 70,000 Yen for #3.

===========
High School
===========

This is the third level of education you go through in the game. If your
Intelligence was high enough, you will be given money upon entry, otherwise
you had to pay 300,000 Yen to attend. This is a critical part of the game, as
your actions here and even prior will determine which of the two paths you
take when leaving high school. If you have high Intelligence and are not an
athlete (playing baseball/tennis and happening to do well), you will take the
university track upon graduation. If you were an athlete, you will go right
on to work.

Your allowance in high school will go up to 10,000 Yen. Based on the events
you went through up to this point, as well as your stats, you should have a
good idea what path you will be taking once high school ends. Once you get to
the end of high school, you will be reviewed by a teacher. If you were
already offered a job by playing sports, you basically skip through this
part. Otherwise, you will have the option of going to university (しんがい)
or seeking employment right away (きゅうしょく). If you go to university, you
can pick the level you want to attempt to attend (A, B, C).

Complete high school first and you will receive 30,000 Yen. The second person
to graduate gets 15,000 Yen, and the last two get 1,000 Yen each.

Cards
-----

Driver's license (pass/fail driving exam)
Fast food job (+80,000 Yen)
Pit fall (lose next turn)
Study (Intelligence +2)

20+ points: +1
40+ points: +2
60+ points: +3
80+ points: +4
90+ points: +5
100 points: +6

Other Information
-----------------

In the high school area, you can land on a normal space and participate in a
sport again. This is the crucial point. If you have high enough Physical
Strength, you will be given 10,000,000 Yen right off the bat and will go on
to work right from high school with a 1,000,000 salary! However, this will
prevent you from going onto the university track, but at least you will be
financially secure!

If you have a high enough Intelligence and get to the end of high school, you
will be able to continue onward to the university track. At the end of high
school, if you qualify, you can pick the level of university you wish to
attend (A, B, C). Then, if you are intelligent enough ahead, you will enter
it. Of course, your score also determines your entry, so that can make up for
a low Intelligence stat, too. The breakdown is as follows:

University A: 30 Intelligence/80 points
University B: 25 Intelligence/70 points
University C: 20 Intelligence/60 points

After you leave the high school area, you will be on one of two short tracks
leading to the train station ahead. They are all Normal spaces (except for
one Card space on the university track). Once you get to the train station at
the end, you will move on to young adulthood on the chosen course.

===============
Young Adulthood
===============

After leaving high school, regardless of what track you take, you are now in
the young adulthood phase of life. If you left high school with a job offer
in sports, you will take the leftmost track. There will be more Love spaces
for you to land on, as well as Job Hunt/Career spaces. Your salary, when you
pass the Money space, is equivalent to the job you have. If you did NOT get a
job offer out of high school and you pass here, you don't have a job, so you
get nothing! You can get a job by landing on the Job Hunt (blue star) spaces.

As soon as you arrive in the young adulthood stage, you will move into your
new home. If you are in university, it is 30,000 Yen; if you are taking the
employment route, it is 40,000 Yen.

University Stage
----------------

If you were intelligent enough to go to university, you will be on the east
track. There will be many Study spaces on the short route to the university
entrance. Once you get to the Stop space before the university, you will be
tested to see if you actually got accepted. This is determined by your
Intelligence level at that point. If you get to graduate, you will receive a
50,000 Yen bonus. Your allowance in the university stage is 1,000,000 Yen.

The required Intelligence/score to enter the university of your choice is as
follows:

University A: 30 Intelligence/80 points
University B: 25 Intelligence/70 points
University C: 20 Intelligence/60 points

In addition, the possibility of you graduating once you enter university is
also determined by your Intelligence level as you proceed. That information
is in the following table:

                     Uni A    Uni B   Uni C
                     -----    -----   -----
You will do well       25       20      15
You must try harder    20       15      10
You will not do well   15       10       5

If you are not cut out to enter university, you will be moved back a few
spaces and will have a chance to try again. If you fail again, you will be
sent right onto the job track.

Cards
-----

Hit by a car (if hospitalized, Physical Strength -5 and lose next turn;
             if only a minor injury, Physical Strength -3)
Hurt by sandals (Luck -7)
Learning English (if learned, Intelligence +5, -1,000,000 Yen;
                 if not learned, nothing happens)
Playing mahjong (Three Scholars, Intelligence +3 and Luck -2;
                Tsumo Doradora Banban, Intelligence +5;
                Only Ron, Intelligence +3;
                Make a mistake/lose, Intelligence -7)
Special bonus (Get 2x your current salary)
Take driving test (pass and you can get Class A license for certain jobs)

Dating
------

In this stage, regardless of the track taken, you will find Love spaces. Land
on them and you will be able to go on dates with women. Initially, you can
pick from two women (right or left), then go from there. If you go on the
right dates with the right person, you will accumulate hearts. Get six hearts
next to your name and you will marry that girl. You can then choose to go on
a honeymoon trip, which will boost one of your statistics (Hawaii for Luck,
Europe for Intelligence, or Africa for Physical Strength). Greater details
about the dating experience can be found below.

Job Hunting
-----------

If you land on the Job Hunt space, you will be able to select from three
random jobs relevant to your skill level. If you did well singing or passed
the driving test (Kart Race mini-game), those will become options. Also, if
you have greater Physical Strength, you will be more likely to have the
option of becoming a Police Officer. A greater breakdown on the game's jobs

Dating Chart
------------

Because of the high amount of information involved, please consult the large
table near the middle of this page for date information:

http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hde37001/life/life3.html

The chart will show you the face of each type of person you can date. Just
below each picture is a bonus showing how your stats will increase after each
date with them. Farther below, you will see a list of date types and how many
hearts you will gain by taking your date to that location. You need six
hearts to marry the person. The big bonus is when you get married, since you
will receive money and get to go on a honeymoon trip to further boost your
stats!

Other Information
-----------------

Before you get to the first Stop space on the university track, you can find
an event in a Normal space. You go to a game design company and can play a
round of Arkanoid again. This can open you up to a career in game design once
you are looking for work. Be careful though, as this will deter you from
going into the university! There are other mini-games that can be played for
other jobs, including a shooting game (for becoming a Doctor) and a flying
game (to become a Pilot).

As you proceed into the job world, you can progress romantically by landing
on more Love spaces. If you are jobless, you will want the Job Hunt spaces to
help bring in some income. If you land on the red star (Career) space, you
may have a chance to turn yourself around for the better. Otherwise, once you
are away from schooling entirely, your job choices are determined by your
level of education, your individual statistics, and certain other events
earlier in the game (if you did the driving test, for instance).

When you reach the Stop space at the top of the path, you will go on to the
next step of adulthood.

=========
Adulthood
=========

On this track through the cityscape, you will see a new space called Stock
spaces. They have turnip icons on them, and you can buy stock if you land on
them. Other than that, you simply play along like you did in the working
portion of your early adulthood. This is the time where you want to really
advance your career and statistics. It may pay off soon! When you get to the
end of this track, you will go on to the late adulthood stage.

On some of the Normal spaces, you will have the option of buying various
types of insurance. You don't have to do anything, but in the event that a
disaster happens, you can receive money for having insurance. You are pretty
much betting whether or not something bad will happen to you later.

Cards
-----

Divorce (if man, keep 1/4 of money; if woman, keep 1/2 of money)
Get married suddenly (random)
Have a baby (+30,000 Yen, can get a total of 90,000 Yen for 3 kids)
Hurt by sandals (Luck -7)
Ride a taxi (-10,000 Yen, get an extra turn)

==============
Late Adulthood
==============

On this section of the course, you will find an inner area with red spaces.
If you land on the Stop space before it, you will be able to either go on if
you did not have a good career, or go into the corporate area and follow the
path of red spaces. If you go into the Corporate spaces, you will be able to
run the business, but you may win or lose a lot of money depending on the
result. It can become very beneficial however, since you can stand to make a
LOT of money to aid in your retirement ahead and for buying a house.

Once you reach the end of the track in the northwest corner, you will finally
receive your severance/retirement pay. If you did particularly well, this can
be up to 20x your salary! At the end, you can board a plane and fly off to a
tropical island for your retirement.

Cards
-----

Drink at bar (-100,000 Yen)
Drink at restaurant (-200,000 Yen)
Take a taxi (-10,000 Yen, get an extra turn)

==========
Retirement
==========

At last, you are at the final stages of your life. The new golden spaces are
Casino spaces. Land there and you will enter the casino, where you can play
games in an attempt to win more money. Fortunately, if you pass the Money
spaces, you will receive a very nice sum of money as part of your pension!

There really is not a whole lot more you can do in this stage. Simply enjoy
the remaining part of the game, and try to bolster your money supply before
you reach the Goal. As always, the person with the most money at the end of
their lives wins! At the end, the results will be displayed and the game will
end. The winner is the person who reached the Goal space with the most money.

Cards
-----

Calling friends (Nothing happens)
Find a treasure map (+3,000 Yen, lose next turn)
Have a grandchild (+30,000 Yen, can get a total of 90,000 Yen for 3 kids)
Play at casino (depends on your performance)
Special Bonus (get 2x your usual income)
Take a taxi (-10,000 Yen, get an extra turn)
Use a car (if you have a car, get another turn, otherwise nothing happens)

=================
Game Board Spaces
=================

Card Spaces
-----------

This is the red space with Card written on it (カド). If you land here, you
will take a card and a random event will occur with different results,
depending on what you get. You can not choose what happens, which makes it a
risk of sorts.

Career Spaces
-------------

This space has a red star on it, and is much rarer than the Job Hunt spaces.
Land on this space and you will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where
you can advance your career.

Casino Spaces
-------------

This space is golden in color with a "G" on it. Land here and you can choose
to play cards or play a slot machine. Bet a certain amount of money, then you
can win or lose it depending on the results.

Corporate Spaces
----------------

This space is fully red, and can only be found in your late adulthood. If you
are qualified enough in your career, you will be able to reach the area where
these spaces are found. Land on them and you will find out if your business
decision was a success or failure, and gain/lose money accordingly.

Event Spaces
------------

Land on this space and an event specific to your location on the board will
occur. In the primary school area, you will go to a free-roaming area. Land
here at other locations and you will be able to pick a single statistic to
give a nice boost to.

Highway Spaces
--------------

The standard paved road spaces, where nothing noteworthy really happens.

Job Hunt Spaces
---------------

This space has a blue star on it, and occurs in early adulthood. Land here
and you will search for a random job, based on your statistics.

Love Spaces
-----------

On these heart spaces, you will be able to go on a date with the opposite
gender. If this is your first time, you will be able to pick from two people
to date. In subsequent dates, you can pick the location of the date, and the
results will vary depending on the person dating and where you go. If you get
six hearts total, you get married, but can continue to go on dates with these
spaces later in the game.

Money Spaces
------------

If you pass the "G" space, you will be given money. The amount you get is
determined by the stage of the game you are in. If you are a child, it is an
allowance; as an adult, it is your salary/main income. You don't actually
have to land on this space to reap its benefits.

Normal Spaces
-------------

When you land on this regular white space, a random event will occur, usually
resulting in a boost to your Intelligence or Physical Strength. Sometimes
this will also result in you losing a small amount of money.

River Spaces
------------

This space looks like a bridge, found in the childhood stages. You can go
fishing or view a UFO, which may affect your statistics.

Stock Spaces
------------

On the turnip spaces, you can choose to buy a certain amount of stock. This
is a risk since it can help you a lot or hurt you.

Stop Spaces
-----------

You must stop at this space, even if you roll a higher number of spaces to
pass it. Your turn ends here, and depending on where you are, an event may
occur.

Study Spaces
------------

This space is white with a blue pencil icon on it. and here and your
Intelligence statistic will most likely go up, though it can go down as well.
These spaces occur only in the university areas.

Test Spaces
-----------

These are the blue spaces with Test written on them (テスト). Land here and
you will have to play the ABC Shooting game. The higher you score, the more
your Intelligence will increase. These spaces only occur in the childhood
school areas.
