Airball(NES) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.2
by Andrew Schultz [email protected](despam spoonerism)

Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting
much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and
I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I
could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if
you'd like to post it on your site.

This guide should have accompanying maps at GameFAQs. It refers to them in
many places where text maps are not fully viable or descriptive enough.

**** AD SPACE ****

Thanks to the folks at RETROUSB.COM without whom a dump of this great game
would probably not exist, and there would not be this FAQ for the NES, or for
the PC version. You can buy an actual cart there too if you want.

================================

 1. INTRODUCTION

In Airball, you play a ball that slowly leaks air as you seek to work your
way through a 277 room mansion that contains eleven items, seven of which the
wizard who turned you into a ball wishes to recover. Your first task is to
find a spell book. Then he assigns you the task of finding:

--Crucifix
--Buddha
--Dragon
--Pumpkin
--Flask
--Beans

Depending on if you played easy, normal or hard mode, these will be in
different places. You may also have a barrel, flashlight, candle and/or a
"this way" block that allow you to see in the dark or create a ledge to jump
on. You can also pick up miscellaneous treasures along the way, but since the
high score is locked and points don't matter, that's just a distraction from
the task at hand.

But it's not just about mapping. There are obstacles in each room that can
puncture your ball. The game's map is the same, easy, medium or hard, but you
have to go to tougher rooms in the medium/hard games. You can't fall from too
great a height in medium, and you can't stand forever on the air pumps that
restore your ball to full strength, either. Even worse, in hard mode, if you
step on one spiked tile, phfblt. Of course, the items are farther out in the
harder games too.

Despite the insane challenge, Airball is a blast with save states. Sometimes
it's tough to tell where or how to jump, and you run into a lot of trap
rooms, but overall there are few games like it for map fiends who don't want
any nonsense like character development.

This FAQ should work for the PC too, though that doesn't have save states,
and it doesn't have "easy" or "medium," and the NES's "hard" is the only
level. You can get the file from the-underdogs.org(search for Air Ball) along
with a manual. You can probably run it through
DosBox(dosbox.sourceforge.org,) but it doesn't have save states. There is a
debug cheat at GameFAQs, but I don't know how to use the DOS debug feature.

 2. CONTROLS AND POINTS

Control-to-screen movement:

   UL
   |
   |
DL--+--UR
   |
   |
   DR

You can move your ball diagonally where the floor permits it. You have a
falling radius of only a few squares.

A button jumps. You can swerve when you jump, but you can only jump 3 squares
in any direction in the x-y plane before falling straight down. You can also
only jump up one square. A also lets you jump up stairs or onto objects. You
can jump through a doorway, and as the next screen appears, you can continue
to steer. By default, however, you do not move anywhere. You can also fall
down and steer from a doorway, which is useful in some rooms, but it's better
to jump overall.

Select button lets you float on easy but toggles fast/slow on medium/hard.
It's a handy cheat for exploring the whole mansion on easy to get your
bearings but it's mostly useless later and just makes the game harder if used
haphazardly. It does, however, save you some time in rooms you know are safe
or that you can navigate. Your ball will bump its head on obstacles or the
ceiling for no damage.

On easy levels you probably don't need the time, but you can let select go
just before you're where you need to be.

Start button shows you which items you have and which you need.

You can position your ball on the edge of a square to make tough jumps, and
you can also wait a bit and a ball not centered will pop back into the right
position.

25 points for:
green gem, green flat thing
31 points for:
pink bar
50 points for: pink gem
100 points for: green thick thing

You can pick up two gems in a row and the game will only register the last
one you picked up, leaving you with a weird score.

Spellbook: 1000 points
Other items in level
Crucifix: 0 points
Flask etc.:1000 points
Progress: 20 for spell book, 30 for one item, 5%/5% for finding all other
items or placing an item. This is really arbitrary, so don't worry about it.

None of the items has any special properties. You can jump on them all, but
you cannot place one on the next, and you can't place more than three in one
room.

 3. STRATEGIES

If you lose all your lives, the crucifix appears in the room where you
continue. This can save a bit of time.

 4. BIG TEXT MAPS

First, note that 187-E, 58-E and 53-E are 1-way doors, to room 150, 244 and
244 respectively. These rooms are death traps on hard mode--unless you swerve
VERY quickly in 244.

 5. WALKTHROUGH

I will provide an outline of where to go, then I will provide how to navigate
each room at the end of all this. The notation I use should be pretty
intuitive , x(dir) = move in that dir from room X, and when I refer to
directions, it will be as you move, not as it is on your view.

First, a guide to rooms with air:

1, 21, 32, 41, 73, 75, 91, 99, 108, 126, 135, 205, 237, 277

   5-1. EASY

In easy mode, you can make your ball float with the SELECT button, it can
fall as far as you want, and you can take a lot of damage before it explodes.
Also, you can sit on the air pumps as long as you like without your ball
exploding. You don't have to visit any dark rooms to get your items. However,
easy level may be a nice way to explore the rest of the wizard's mansion to
prepare yourself for the hard and medium settings. The candle is in room 145,
2 north of room 97. The flashlight is next to the buddha. Well, it's "easy"
level. They get more difficult to find later.

First, get the spell book. 1N, 34N, 19N, 8E, 9W, 8S, 19S, 34S. Now place the
item anywhere on the screen and get your tasks from the wizard.

1W, 15W, 35W, 103W. Jump on the barrel, get the crucifix. You don't really
need the barrel at this point. 102E, 103E, 35E, 15E, drop the crucifix. One
down, five to go.

1W, 15W, 35W, 103W, 102W, 101W, 100N, 93W, 92S, 99E, 104S, 110E, 111E. Jump
on the table and get the flask. 112W, 111W, 110N, 104W, 99N, 92E, 93S, 100E,
101E, 102E, 103E, 35E, 15E, and drop the flask.

1N, 34N, 19N, 8W, 7W, 6W, 5W, 4W, 3W, and now on 2 go up the stairs 3
times(W) and N and push B. That gets the beans. 2E, 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E, 7E, 8S,
19S, 34S.

Return to 104, but now 104E, 105N, 114E, 115S, 123W, 106N, 98W, and get the
pumpkin behind the wall. You'll see a small part of it glowing. Retreat to
the start as before.

The dragon head is next. 1E, 36E, 37E, 38S, 47S, 55S, 205E, 206E, 207E, 208E,
209E, 210E, jump to get the head. 211W, 210W, 209W, 208W, 207W, 206W, 205N,
55N, 47N, 38W, 37W, 36W.

Finally let's get the buddha. 1S, 52S, 60S, 68E, 69N, 61E, 62S, 70E, 71N,
63E, 64E, 65E, 66E, 67N, 59N, 51N, get the buddha. It is the one with the
face. The flashlight looks more like a weeble wobble. They are sort of
obscured, so if you get the wrong one, drop it and pick up the other. If you
want to complete this level, return to the center and drop the buddha. You
can take a shortcut here by dying, of course. And you may wish to try jumping
west through level 65's arch to get to level 64. It is a trap on later
levels.

However, if you want to explore, take up the flashlight and look around. You
can just fly all over the place, and there are plenty of air pumps. This
advance scouting was how I figured out what was where.

WELL DONE

I TURN YOU BACK INTO A HUMAN

Ball bounces out of the mansion and lands in boat. Lightning flashes as the
wizard casts a spell. Ball turns into person who sails away. This ending
occurs at all three difficulties.

   5-2. MEDIUM

This is a bit trickier. You can't fall any great distance, or--kccch. The
items are a bit farther away. And you need to go a bit further when you look
for items. However, there are a few tricks you can use, two items are quite
close to each other, and you don't have to go too far...yet. You don't need
the candle much, but it can help. It's in room 108.

The book again is not too bad. It is where the beans were in easy mode. There
are no huge drops except in room 2, so you can follow the pattern as in easy.
N: 1-34-19-8 E: 7-6-5-4-3-2 retreat.

Now you have a bit trickier route to get to your next items. Let's go to the
west maze first.

1<15<35<103<102<101<100^93<92v99>104>105^114<113v121>122^117>118, go 1U and
jump left onto the stairs, then U R and get the flask. Retreat to the start.

1<15<35<103<102<101<100^93<92v99>104>105^114>115v123<106^98<97^ gets you to a
new maze area.

145<144<143<142<141^149^158^165>166>167>168v gets you to 160 and the pumpkin.

160^168<167<166<165v15v149v141>142>143>144>145v140v97, and see above for the
way back.

1>36>37>38v47v55v205>206>207>208>209>210>211>212>213>214>215>216

Here you have a tough puzzle that's even tougher on hard mode. You can suffer
a bit of damage after using the air pump in 237. Jump while on the spike to
the right, then go down the stairs. L U* jump-right to get to 245. You can
jump back the same way. It takes a bit of damage in any case, and this is not
a bad place to sacrifice a life if you need to.

You can speed from 245 to 249 if you really need to save time, but you can
probably make it there and back without a disaster.

>245>246>247>248>249>250>251>252 for the beans. You can lose a life here if
you want, to save time, but since I want to allow for perfectionism, I'll
give you the whole story.

Go back to 216. To get to the left 216, you need to stand on the left edge of
the right raised part and jump. Also, to avoid losing a life, jump left into
the door left of 216. You need to push A then immediately left, and you'll
make it to 215. See the same for 208 going left as well.

Back to 212. For the next item, you can go the long way(D R* U* L*) or you
can stumble on the hidden door at the bottom. Go down the stairs and off just
to the right of them. Then go up. You'll find the secret door hidden under
the stairs. 238 is a tricky looking spiral, but if you just follow the path
it's not too bad. R* U* L* D* and get the crucifix and return. Just go 1U in
the DR. (Yes, I went the long way around first time. And in case you're
wondering/worried, I don't think there are other critical secret passages.
Stuff like 94>101 is obscured but not particularly useful. Besides, I checked
every room.)

Back to 212, again. 212v228(v237 for air, ^228)<227<226<225(this swerves a
bit but no necessary danger--try a DL jump if you want and you might not get
stung, but it is risky)<224(D* L* U* R* U* L jump-L L 2D 2R D* L*)<223(U* R*
U jump-U U L* 1D jump-L U 2L D L)<222(jump-L 2x)<221<236<235. Get the Buddha
and return.

From 222, jump R 2 squares away from the spiked tree stumps. From 223 you can
go R U 2R D jump-R(a bit risky but you should land square) U 2R D jump-D D R,
or long way is R U 2R 3D L jump-D D jump-R jump-U R U jump-U etc. From 224,
1R 1U jump-R(once only) 2D 2R 2U. In 225, you can jump UR to get to the door.

For your final stunt, use the barrel to get the dragon more safely. Go to 42
as you did before.

1v44v52v60v68>69^61>62v70>71^63>64>65>66>67^59^51^42(<41>42 for air--takes a
bit of damage to get there, and you need to place an item
too)^33^25<24^13^18<17<12v11v22(barrel)^11<10v21(watch it here--you may need
to jump around a bit if you are near full. Or you can go back a room and get
damaged a bit and exit here just before you're full)v29<28<27<26v81v87

Place the barrel before 1U of the dragon--basically you'll have a clump.

Place the barrel at the B. Now get the dragon head and return for the win.

Book at 2

Crucifix at 238
Beans at 252
Barrel at 22
Dragon at 87

   5-3. HARD

Here you have a dead flashlight you can use as you would the barrel. The
items also do not glow. And worse yet, you have to give up at least two lives
to get a couple of the items. Oh, and touching any sort of spikes kills you.
Among things to note here are that you need to jump left through the exit of
room 208 and right from 207 to 208 to avoid the spikes, and also, you can
grab an item as you fall to your death.

There's a lot of backtracking here, so if you have the infinite lives cheat,
you can cut off a lot of time by just getting killed after getting some of
the other items, or placing them(i.e. the stuff in room 216, the crucifix the
pumpkin, and the dragon head.)

To get the spell book at 109, bring an item(the candle is easiest--it's in
108) into the room. Place it in the DR of where you can get. Jump on it, then
jump left, then jump on the "THIS WAY." Go 1D of the top, fall and push A a
bunch to grab the book.

Now once you returned the spell book to the center you will want to get the
candle in room 109 again. Even in the dark, there aren't many obstacles you
don't know, so go get it.

1<15<35<103<102<101^94<93<92v99>104>105^114<113v121>122^117

At 117, drop the candle to the left so you can climb through the left door.
You'll get it back later. <116. Jump down, go 1L and jump L-D to get on the
stairs to level 124. (reverse to go back.)

v124

2L U L and fall left, jump down, and jump right, down and right to get to the
right door. (>125)

1U, jump right, fall right, jump D twice, R D* L* jump left and go to the
top.(^120)

<119v127(gap is on the left)v135(go 2L to avoid spikes at first)>136(watch
the edges)^128(leave the candle here since it's a tricky room)^137<138. You
will probably need to stop and get air at 135, but if you are at 1/3 or
better, don't bother. Save some time and just go through to 138.

To get the beans at 138, climb to the UL platform and lean off the right
edge. Before you're corrected back, jump R and walk over the beans. Fall D
and push B as you fall. You'll die, but you'll have the beans wherever you
are resurrected. Retreat to the start and drop the beans.

This is not so easy--on 127, go UL through the narrow hole then back right
when at the top to avoid the spikes. Then go R and UR when below the statue.
In 125, in the DR, 2U L jump U then jump L. In 124, be on the upper part near
the arc, jump L, roll L a square, then jump L. Jump U and go to the top. Go
1D, all the way right and up. In 116, fall L, jump U-L and fall U. R through
the arch.

Now come back for the candle in 117. Retreat to 99, drop the candle, and now
you have a speed run if you are not cheating your health up. Go back to 114(>

constantly be pushing in one direction to save time. This isn't the worst
place to lose a life, but with the fast mode you should have a good chance of
getting out ok.

There is one item in the south, including the barrel.

You've done this before, but just for review, R* U jump-U U 3L U. (^42)

Be sure your ball is centered on the right square as having even part of the
ball touch spikes is deadly.

42<41<40<39(wait then turn D)v16

Getting the barrel is tricky. You need to enter 48 from the top, jumping
through the door, and then you need to steer hard left. That should get you
to 45, where you walk down the upper stairs, 1U(tap the controller and wait
for the ball to shift up on the next square,) get the barrel, 1D and come
back up.

You need to carry the barrel to 83, now.

The dragon head is in 83 but you have to loop to the top to get it.

D to 90, jump L twice at 89, U at 88, U at 82, 2L U jump R at 76, D. Drop the
barrel on the north edge of the platform and get the dragon's head. You'll
have to leave the barrel behind as you go back, of course, but that's no big
deal.

Leaving is a bit easier since you don't have side trips and you can fall. ^77

the other side. ^62 <61 v69 <68 ^60 ^52(up the left stair) ^44 ^1.

The next three items are in the east, and it's a bit repetitive, but there
are potential traps. First, to prepare, get the dead flashlight in room 9(^ ^
^ >) and carry it to room 216.

1>35>36>37>38v47v55v205>206(get around the blocker by going 1D, wait, then 1U

(detour v228v237 for air)>213(jump R twice)>214(jump U then R then climb
stairs, jump D after ball is centered)>215(jump R twice)

You'll see a buddha at 216, but you'll need 2 items to get to it and get out.
So now you need to retreat.

Jump left through the archway then left again at the left edge of the 2x2 in
215. Jump U, 2L, jump L, and jump D at the left edge in 214. In 213, jump
left(cut it off a bit if at the bottom of the arch) then jump again. 212--2U
jump-L*2 2D L. 211: 2 jumps L. 1R of the left door in 208, jump up and go
hard left immediately to jump over the danger area. In 206, wait and be sure
you are 1D of the top, then L* D* L* U L. The rest is easy. Get the candle
and come back.

Be on the north part of the arch entry and place the candle on the spikes to
the right. Retreat for the dead flashlight, get on the candle and jump right.
Place the flashlight where you fell--be careful here. Go 1U, center and drop
1D--otherwise the flashlight may land on the stairs, which screws you over,
because given a choice what to take, you always take the buddha, and now the
flashlight blocks you. Now you can get the buddha and jump back--leaning left
off the flashlight. Use the air in 237 if you are low. Then retreat.

Back to 216 after returning the buddha. Get air in 237, then go U R R R R R
U. Room 230 is a mean optical illusion where you go down along the bottom
squares and right. Wait to center, then go up. In room 231, jump right over
the bottom bit. It may be a pain on the way back. Room 233 requires a swerve
jump U R. In 217, get the crucifix and go back.

231 is a tricky room. Go to the DR, then 1U. Go left and hold it as you
quickly jump 2L. You can hold the A button too. That gets you across safely.
230's optical illusion is not so mean now. You've already returned to 1 from
212, so I won't give further instructions other than to remember to jump left
through 216 and 208's arches.

Now back to room 216. Get the dead flashlight, jump to where you got the
buddha and go down the stairs.
Go U then jump R. The flask is behind this long trek. You need to go a long
way right after room 216, but you have a fuel break at the end, and there
aren't a lot of obstacles. You can just jump right continually a lot. You
should go fast through rooms 245-248. Then slow down in 249. When you exit to
250, go D R* U and back to full speed. There aren't many more obstacles. You
have to walk around bushes at 260. Also at 273 you need to slow down a bit.

Here's room 277. It has a recharge. If you have more than 1/4 air and an
extra life, I would recommend killing yourself off once you get the flask,
instead of landing on the pumps. That would save a lot of time. You'd wind up
back at 237. However, in the interest of "doing it right..."

At 277, place the flashlight left of the air and jump on it and then the air
pumps. Recharge, get the flashlight and go 1R. One of the items will glow a
bit at the top. That is the flask. It is in the far right of the 2nd row,
1L2D from the top. Place the flashlight next to it, jump on it and get it.
You've got the flask! It's over now, right?

Heh heh. 1L. Drop the flask and bring the flashlight next to the air pumps.
This is just insurance for the return trip you're going to make. Fill up
again in 277. Go back left, slowly til through 273, then quickly til 251,
then quickly back to 245. At 216, place the flask where the flashlight was,
then go L to 212 then down to 237. Recharge. Now go back to 216, then right
all the way to get the flashlight you left lying around.

Now return to 216 and drop the flashlight R when 1U of the flask. Get the
flask and drop it at the bottom of the stairs. Get the flashlight and place
it where the flask was. Get the flask, jump left and go to 237, then back
home. You win, congratulations! If you are able to do this without save
states, I salute you. I couldn't.

   5-4. ROOM MAP DETAIL

Each room is 8x8 at most. Some are rather smaller and some are just hubs that
are easy to get through. I will not comment on the easier ones, but rather
only on the ones that are potentially treacherous or require a certain
pattern. I may add more comments later, but I am pretty sure that whatever
you need to know is contained in the walkthrough.

Rooms 48, 54 and 95 are potential traps in the medium and hard difficulties.

For these text maps I simply took the highest square and calculated if it was
safe and where it was.

Ledger

# = highest safe level you can walk. This may be an overhang.

you need to drop every special item here, starting with the spell book.

Once you have the isometric map it's pretty clear what to do here. You have
to go left along the stairs and up. You may need to take an item under the
overhang.

For the beans on easy, wait, then go left, jump left twice, then go up and
get the beans.

For the spell book on easy, run left from the arch, jump left twice, and grab
the book that is up.

On the way left you can run into the dangerous squares and they won't hurt
you. (U L D L U L) It is jumping that's the problem. On the way back it is
another story. You need to be able to stop just before the sharp edges on the
way back, especially on hard mode.

This may seem like micromanaging, but on hard, you may wish to exit to the
right side of the bottom to get to 107. You can roll diagonally anywhere you
want to avoid the center bit.

The damage squares in the center are hidden from view by the DL platform,
which is a nuisance in the first two levels but deadly on hard, especially
when that room is dark. But fortunately you can move diagonally to get around
that pretty easily.

The damage squares are easy enough to avoid. Here you may wish to use the air
pump if you are low on hard. However, if you have enough, it may be quicker
just to get through 109 and kill yourself and go back to the start.

This is a tricky one on hard. The spell book is hidden. There's no visible
way up. You need to take the candle from room 108 and place it between the 2
and 3(the 3, incidentally, is really technically a 2--the "THIS WAY" is
rearranged there.) Then jump on the candle, the pointing hand, and the "THIS
WAY" and go up do 1D of the edge. Fall right and pound the A button if you're
not sure when you'll hit the ground. You will get the spell book just before
you die.

   5-5. TWO MISSING ROOMS?!

Rooms 43 and 139 are missing. I suspect this is a programming oversight,
since I am able to win the game. Looking at the numbers, I also see:

1) 43 = 42 + 1. Most rooms to the right are 1 greater than the one above it.
To the right of 42 we have 58. Therefore, no room 43.

2) 139 is just below 140, the start of the big small-room tree-maze. It
probably got left out when rooms were being designed.

 6. CHEATS

0x47 = health(high byte). Set this to 7F, or freeze it in FCEUXD, to have
constant good health.
0x48 = low byte of health. This is not nearly as critical, but watching it
shows you how quickly/slowly time ticks off.
0x5c and 0x12a set to 0x8 will give you the candle. Other values include:

0x7e = # of continues remaining
0x169 # of lives(not including current)
0x17/b7 = x distance from UR
0x18/b8 = y distance from UR
0x19/b9 = z distance from bottom(0=ground floor)

Use these to skip over a particularly nasty room by positioning your ball on
the right coordinates.

0x4c0 = level 1 map of 8x8. It starts with UR square and moves L, then down a
row, etc.
0x500 = next row up, up to level 9.

By the way, you can just put items in your inventory in room 1 and drop them
about to win quickly.

 7. VERSIONS

1.0.2: sent to GameFAQs 6/15/2009, a few more touchups on replay. Maps
updated too.
1.0.1: sent to GameFAQs 11/28/2007, filling in details/thanks and info on the
PC version. And remembering to make the guide full-circle this time. Oops.
1.0.0: sent to GameFAQs 11/17/2007, with maps to follow

 8. CREDITS

Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done.
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow
Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog and
others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-yet-banned message
board incarnation. I am not part of his gang, but I want him to be part of
mine.
Thanks to the NES Completion Project folks for keeping it going.
Thanks especially to AdamL for pointing this game out to me. It was so good,
I missed following Purdue's men's opening basketball game against Bethune-
Cookman on a yahoo page in the background for it. Then I missed a part of the
Old Oaken Bucket game against Indiana to write this guide. This is no joke. I
was born in West Lafayette, you see. Actually, I missed the part where
Indiana went up 24-3, so that wasn't all bad.
Because I was given the privilege of using this ROM before most of the
general public, I would also like to thank the people at lostlevels for
keeping things going and spending their time and money so that cool games
like this get out. In particular, I would like to add ad space for

RETROUSB.COM where you can buy an actual cart of this.

I'm serious when I say I'd be willing to fork over $100 for a game that
sucked. The gaming community has done a lot for me, not just because I've
gotten cool games, but because I've learned so much from this.

Thanks to the fceuxd people for making such a good emulator, so I could cheat
my lives and air up.
Thanks to the kind policeman who gave me his pen when mine ran out on the bus
trying to redesign/rewrite medium-level maps. I wonder if he thought I was
doing something really weird.
Thanks to the-underdogs.org for the manual.
