Dates Written: September 5 to September 12, 2002
I dedicate this to my cousin Troy Costello who showed me this oh so swank
game all those years ago. We never did beat it then, but man did we ever
have loads of fun trying to do it!
Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the
afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and
you will never be forgotten.

--------------------------------Introduction--------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) In this game, you are Tom Sawyer (or Huck Finn as player 2). You are day
dreaming in class, and since you are quite the little scamp as either of
these boys, you day dream of wild and crazy things. From being on board
a pirate ship all the way to Crazy Injun Joe's Cave, you will have a ball
of a time navigating this somewhat challenging game.

4) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.

o---------o
Barrels......: These are the first obstacle in the level. They roll towards
you from all levels of platforms.
Seagulls.....: These appear with the barrels, and they will try to swoop down
to get you as you run and jump the barrels.
Pirate Boy...: These guys will walk towards you, and as you throw rocks at
them, they will start to jump.
Ground Rat...: This pretty small rodent charges in a straight line across the
floor right at you. Jump to avoid, but a well placed rock can
stop them too. They will sometimes yield a Heart.
Giant Rat....: He shoots an energy wave across the screen, and he appears and
disappears at will. He takes two hits to kill.
Small Octopus: These guys move in a swimming like motion, and they shoot two
types of projectiles, water and ink. Water will kill you if
it hits you first, but ink will just colour you black. If
another ink blast hits you in this form you die, but water
cleans it off. Then any shot will kill you.
Giant Octopus: This is an extremely large fella who you need to hit multiple
times in the eyes. She has Small Octopus here for protection,
and she can shoot ink blasts as well.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) You begin by jumping the barrels (making sure that the seagulls do not
get you). When you are running, and you see the barrels coming for you
from the high platform, just run quickly underneath so they can not get
you (making sure to jump the last barrel on the bottom).
b) A Pirate Boy will appear, so hit him with a rock to kill him (just be
warned he jumps whenever you throw rocks). If you go up top, you will
face two Pirate Boys, if you go the bottom route, you will face one
barrel. At the end of the dual platform set-up, there is a Pirate Boy
(if you are up top, you can let him walk away). Kill the next two Pirate
Boys, and avoid/kill the Seagull. Then take the ladder to the next
section of the ship.
c) Head left, kill the first Pirate Boy, and then jump the Ground Rat that
charges. Then kill the next Pirate Boy, go down the ladder, go left, and
go up the next ladder. Go across the top killing the Pirate Boy, and
dealing with the two Ground Rats however you feel like doing so. Go down
the ladder to face the Pirate Boy who has a gun as opposed to a knife
like the others. Then deal with the Ground Rat, go up the ladder, and
head left to another gun toting Pirate Boy. Go down the ladder, and go
left until you are between two sets of stacked crates.
d) This is where the Giant Rat will appear, and he takes two hits to kill.
When he is hit, he will disappear for a bit, and then reappear on top of
one of the two crate stacks. He sometimes shoots a big wave across the
screen, so be careful. Go down the ladder to the next section.
e) Jump and throw rocks to rid yourself of the small octopus, then go down
the ladder and do the same to the next two small Octopi. Jump the Small
Rat, go up the ladder (wait for the Small Octopus to go by), and head
right taking out two more Small Octopi on the way. Let the Small Octopus
below you cruise right on by, take the ladder down, and then take the
next ladder up. Deal with the Small Octopi hear however you please (kill
or avoid), and then head right to get to the first boss.
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
The Giant Octopus is huge, but do not be intimidated. Get lined up with her
bottom front tentacle, and just rapidly chuck rocks. This will not only hit
her eyes, but it will also destroy her baby Small Octopi. You should never
see her ink blasts with this strategy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------Mississippi River Rafting---------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Logs...............: These slowly move in a straight line down the river,
and are easily avoided/killed.
Fish...............: These swim down the river at a fairly fast speed, and
can be dealt with the same way as the Logs.
Grass Islands......: These float slowly back and forth, and are usually
situated where you need to go through multiple numbers
of them.
Ravens.............: These guys quickly move from top to bottom, but
generally do not get very close to you.
Underwater Barriers: These swing around slowly in the lazy current, and you
must carefully make your way past them, or sink with
your raft.
Crows..............: These guys fly in from the right, and will dive at you
when they reach the middle of the screen. These often
yield hearts/slingshots.
Dolphin............: It moves from left to right, and is not always
available to be shot since it is underwater. It is much
easier to avoid, than it is to kill.
Frog...............: These guys sit on land masses where they can jump to
another land mass. Easy enough to avoid, and kill them
if they jump in your path.
Whirlpool..........: If you get sucked into one of these vortexes, you will
have one less life to play with. You can escape them,
but it takes a fair amount of luck.
Boy................: Sits on shore, and chucks a stone at you from time to
time.
Giant Crocodile....: He moves back and forth across the top of the screen, and
he uses small whirlpools to try and scroll your raft off
of the screen. Touching him is instant death as well.

Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) You start by facing a barrage of Fish and Logs, so use your rocks to get
as many as you can for more "T" icons (more extra men). Then you need to
get through a Grass Islands section.
b) Jump the three land bridges while avoiding/killing the Crows that attack
you.
c) This will take you to a fork in the river where no matter which you
choose, you will face Underwater Barriers. Choose your side, and
carefully move by each one (three on the left, four on the right).
d) A few logs will assault you, along with some Crows. You will run through
a fair amount of this combo, and then you will face three Dolphins (just
avoid them).
e) You now enter a Frog area, coupled with Whirlpools (go through the middle
and shoot the frogs as they jump). Logs return next, and they are
coupled with Whirlpools. Following this short amount of attacks, you
will have a Boy chucking rocks at you from shore added to the mix. As
you head up, you will have to navigate narrower waterways, and with
Whirlpools complicating things.
f) If you choose the left path, you just have to jump land bridges and deal
with the rock throwing Boy. If you choose right, you need to navigate
the open water, but you are closer to the rock-throwing Boy.
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
The river suddenly opens up wide, and you have reached the boss which is a
Giant Crocodile! Throw your rocks through his front two teeth to hurt him.
It takes about three hits to send him packing.

6) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Butterfly..: These fellas flutter on a wavy line towards you.
Brown Slug.: These guys crawl methodically across the ground, hoping to
take a big chomp out of your ankles.
Porcupine..: These guys charge rapidly forward, and can catch you unprepared.
Mole.......: These furry rodents dig their way across the screen at you, and
are hard to hit with rocks.
White Bird.: They like to swoop down and do a dive bomb attack on you. They
often yield a slingshot for you.
Pelican....: Can be killed, but it can be a real help if you will let it do
so.
Seahorse...: Bob up and down in the water, waiting for someone to step on a
platform at the incorrect time.
Snake......: They patrol a specific area, so they are not too threatening
until you draw near, because they will then hop at you.
Grasshopper: Hop towards you, and are easily beat with a few quick stone
throws.
Monkey.....: Runs down the trees branches quickly, and then returns to the
top by way of the of the trunk. These are dangerous enemies,
so approach with caution.
Gorilla....: Six small monkeys to create this behemoth! He throws rocks
into the sky, which break into smaller pieces which then fall
down.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) Hit the three sets of a Butterfly and two Brown Slugs. Then you can
choose a high road (Porcupines, Moles, and White Birds), or a low road
(Moles). Fight your way across these paths, and when they rejoin, you
face two Brown Slugs.
b) You then face three more sets of the Butterfly/two Brown Slug combo. You
should be coming up to pits of water between pieces of land, where you
have the choice of two methods of travel: you can hop your way across
these islands, or you can grab a hold of the Pelican entering from behind
(just jump into its legs). It will transport you across the pits, and
press down when you reach a black background of forest so the upcoming
Butterfly will not get you.
c) Once you are grounded again, you will face Butterflies, Brown Slugs, and
Snakes in a rapid succession, so keep your throwing arm going non-stop to
thin their numbers. When you get to the part where there are two snakes
on mushrooms with an empty mushroom between them, throw rocks at the
empty mushroom till an elf appears, and donates a 1-up to your cause (it
will also kill all enemies on the screen)! Then it is Brown Slugs and
Butterflies till you exit the dark part of the forest.
d) You re-enter the sunlit section of the forest to face Brown Slugs on the
low road, or White Birds on the high road. Then you face four
Grasshoppers, which leads to many multi-branched trees.
e) Take to the trees as you fight Butterflies and Monkeys. Once you
maneuver through this tough section, you are once again faced with the
Butterfly/two Brown Slugs.
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
Suddenly, the screen will stop scrolling, and six Monkeys will run in to
form a pyramid, which somehow transforms them into one large gorilla! To
hurt this large Primate, jump and throw rocks into its face. It attacks by
throwing a chunk of rock into the sky, which breaks apart and slowly falls
to the ground. Just dodge it, and continue to assault the face, and you
will quickly be victorious! It will change colour along the way, and the
order is (just to help you know how close you are to winning): Purple to
Green to Orange to This is by far the easiest boss yet!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------Castle Of Evil-------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
7) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Bat............: Dive down from their perch to attack you.
Skeleton.......: Walk towards you, when they are hit they only crumble, and
can get themselves moving again in a bit of time.
Candle.........: These bad boys shoot embers down all around you in an
attempt to burn you badly.
Mummy..........: These guys take three hits to kill as they shamble towards
you in a slow, methodical pace.
Skeleton Knight: This one is taller than regular Skeletons, and it carries a
large sword. It can throw copies of its sword, and it is
fairly fast. It takes multiple hits to destroy.
Ghost Bomber...: Flies above you, and drops small, rolling bombs. When it
is killed, it often leaves a slingshot power-up for you.
Slime..........: These guys can stick to the ceiling, and they crawl along the
flat surface towards you.
Witch..........: This is a second mini-boss on this level. Her single shot
goes out to above you, and then dives at you.
Spider.........: Come down on their threads, and try to hit you.
Big Blue Devil.: He will power up his jewel so he can create a flying imp which
drops little enemies who try to touch you.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) Head to the right in this spooky hall, and throw your rocks at any Bats
and Skeletons you see while you avoid fiery death from above from
Candles. You will come across a Mummy, so kill it quickly, and continue
on facing all four enemies mentioned previously.
b) When you see a large mirror, you will head right towards a fireplace
where a Skeleton Knight will appear! Throw rocks at it, and when it
throws its sword at you, duck it, and continue to pepper it with rocks.
It will quickly succumb, and you can continue on your way up to the next
floor of the mansion.
c) Head left, you will face a Mummy, and then a Ghost Bomber (kill it for a
slingshot if you wish). Deal with a Skeleton, and then choose the high
road (Skeleton), or the low road (Mummies, Slimes). Continue left to find
a...
d) WITCH!!! She's a WITCH! BURN HER!!! Anyway, get on the table in the
middle of the screen, and jump and throw rocks at the Witch. Just remember
to dodge any of the shots that come your way. After beating her, shoot the
oh so stylish Grim Reaper portrait on the wall in the mouth three times to
get a pixie to appear and put your girls face in the mirror (you get an
extra man for doing so).
e) You go up to the next floor, and you have to use floating platforms to
cross a pit that somehow exists (although there is a ceiling on the floor
below somehow). To complicate things you face a Ghost Bomber along the
way. On the other side you face yet another Ghost Bomber as well as two
Skeletons.
f) You can choose to go up the broken staircase (recommended), or take the
lower route (you face Slimes, Spiders). After you go across, jump the
last two pits, and then head right to find the owner of the Castle Of
Evil!
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
It is a Bib Blue Devil! Jump and shoot the jewel in his staff quickly to
win. A small Imp may be born if you are too slow, and it will try to get
you with small enemy drops (avoid it and it's babies). You need to destroy
the Imp before you can damage the Big Blue Demon. Provided you are careful,
you will have an easy time with this boss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------Cloud Land----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Wisp...........: Fall from the sky, and quickly charge at you.
Yellow Canary..: These guys fly above you till they pass you, and then
charge at you from behind.
Eagle..........: Come from behind you, and fly a very wavy pattern. If
these are killed, they will often give you a slingshot
power-up.
Lightning Cloud: These dark fellas shoot four lightning bolts down to the
ground.
Shooting Star..: Appear in large groups, they shoot from behind in an
attempt to kill you.
Dragon.........: Swoops in from the sky to try and pick you off. They will
return if you do not kill them.
Volcano........: Stationary mountains that try to roast you alive with magma
rocks.
Cloud Boy......: Floats around the screen trying to touch you, and he can also
toss lightning bolts in an attempt to hit you.
Giant Zeppelin.: This flying contraption is heavily armed, and you will need
to be flying sharp to get by it.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) Wisps will threaten you to start as well as Yellow Canaries. This will
continue to happen, and Eagles will soon join the attack from behind you.
b) Once you enter an area with cloud houses, be on the look-out for a Red
Balloon to enter quickly from the left. If you grab it, you can fly over
a large part of the level. You can skip the Lightning Clouds, and the
Shooting Stars, but you must drop down to a cloud after that because of
the Dragon that will hit you if you remain with the Red Balloon.
c) Advance cautiously in this section as you face many Dragons. Remember
they can return from behind to try and fireball you in the back. When
you see the Hawk come in, you have finished with the Dragons.
d) Once you enter the mountains, you will have to contend with Volcanoes, so
time your jumps so you are on the mountain peak between blasts.
e) After getting through that area, you have arrived at a mini-boss named
Cloud Boy. Just go to the far right corner, and duck when he comes near,
chuck rocks at him when he is approaching across the bottom (two hits) to
beat him.
f) Run straight across the next portion to avoid all of the Shooting Stars,
and then grab the waiting Red Balloon. This will give Tom (or Huck) a
cloud to ride in for the Boss!
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
The Boss is a Giant Zeppelin! Fly your cloud skillfully as you pick off the
armaments of this tough old Zeppelin. Shoot at all times, but concentrate
on maneuvering around any shots fired your way. When you reach the burner
at the end, shoot it rapidly till it blows up, and then go above it as it
catches on fire to finish this demented contraption. If you can do this
successfully, you will reach the final level!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------Crazy Injun Joe's Cave---------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
9) This section will list all opposition you will face, and a guide for
getting through the level.
o---------o
Enemies
o---------o
Bat............: More aggressive in this level, they swoop right at you on
a horizontal attack pattern.
Scorpion.......: They are ground based, and come at you steadily.
Stalactites....: Fall from ceiling in an attempt to turn Tom into a spitted
little boy.
Fish...........: Jump out of the waterfall in an attempt to get any unwary
adventurers.
Snake..........: These grey fellas return to bother you, but this time when
you hit them with a rock, they multiply, and one jumps at
you! Just avoid them, and go on your way.
Blaze Dragons..: Are red in colour, and they breathe extremely hot blue
flames, they can quickly roast themselves some little boy
meat, extremely well done!
Crazy Injun Joe: The man who has haunted Tom's fears for most of his life,
and hear is Toms chance to get himself a piece of the
evil man.
o-------------o
Walkthrough
o-------------o
a) As you head left, you face Bats, Scorpions, and Stalactites. Advance
cautiously, and jump down to the next level of the cave.
b) There are lots of Scorpions, but the real threat is from the insane
amounts of Bats on the ceiling. You best bet in this section is to
quickly charge through the cramped area before all of those bloodthirsty
Bats get loose to terrorize you. Then you have to navigate over a
bottomless pit on floating platforms.
c) When you arrive at the other side, a single Bat and a single Scorpion
await you. After them is another floating platform area, this time with
a huge waterfall in the background. This time however, you are forced to
climb up the vertical passage way on the platforms, while being forced to
avoid/kill the Fish that jump out of the waterfall.
d) Once you reach the top, head left over yet another pit of death on
floating platforms. This quickly gives way to an ice cave where
Stalactites reappear for your gaming pleasure. These are quickly joined
by Scorpions, so as you run the gauntlet of falling icicles, throw stones
to clear your path of enemies.
e) You jump off the end, and you fall through a section filled with Snakes.
As the above ENEMIES section said, just avoid them, and move on to the
next area.
f) When you reach the normal cave setting again, head right to a floating
platform set over lava pits. Here you will fight some Blaze Dragons!
They only take on hit each, but hunt in a large pack, so be nimble on
your toes so you can dance out of the line of fire.
o------------o
Boss Fight
o------------o
Then you have to jump one last lava pit, and you then run into the next
cavern, and you come face to face with Crazy Injun Joe himself! He has
tamed a sea serpent of some sort, and is riding its back as he fires arrows
at you! Jump and throw rocks at Crazy Injun Joe, and jump/avoid any arrows
he shoots at you. He takes about ten hits to finish off, and when you do
it, you have beaten this incredibly neat game!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------Differences In Game Versions--------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
10) This section will deal with differences in the different versions of the
game released.
-The only real difference is between the North American and the Japanese
cartridges. I covered the North American version with this guide, but the
level guides still work for the Japanese one. The levels on the Japanese
cartridge are in a slightly different order than those of the North
American version, making for a slightly different gaming experince.
North American level order: 1-2-3-4-5-6
Japan level order.........: 2-3-4-5-1-6
-As you can see, the Japanese Pirate Ship is inserted into the fifth slot,
moving Levels 2 through Levels 5 up one spot (referencing Levels from the
North American Version).

A fun game that can get easy with practice. Nonetheless, it is worth a
look over to experience a good old fashioned platformer. This game never
really got the recognition it deserved, so I say that you should try this
"Sleeper Hit" (get it, slee... oh right, I am not funny). Regardless,
give this one a try and you will not be disappointed! If you enjoy it,
there are a slew of unheralded platformers for the NES that few know like
Bug Bunny's Birthday Blowout and Kiwi Kraze to name two. Both are an
excellent play, so why not step up and try them out as well!?
