1.01  -  Version History
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version FINAL - January 2007 - First Release - FINAL VERSION

1.02  -  Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back in 1987 when SQUARE was a pretty much no-known company, they actually
released games that went pretty much unknown.  Yes it was a small period of
time in their existance before Final Fantasy and Enix came along but at one
point they were an average struggling company believe it or not.  In 1987 they
released the game called The 3D Battles Of World Runner.  The game was released
when "3D" was a fad, and the game even came with your own set of 3D glasses in
every box, as a marketing ploy.  I've used the 3D glasses and they pretty much
just give you a headache.  The only other NES game that came with 3D glasses is
Rad Racer, which also used "3D" to help sell the game.

So is the game really a true 3D game?  Of course not.  It uses 2D sprites to
create a pseudo 3D environment, which was quite clever at the time of 1987.
One other neat fact about this game is that Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu
composed the music for this game.  This guy is now world famous for his work
creating the music for each and every Final Fantasy game, but this was before
his fame.

Overall this is a pretty neat game with an interesting concept and fun game
play mechanics, but it should not keep you busy for more than an hour or two
if you are bored.

                             2. Controls

Having trouble figuring out which button operates which move?  This is the
section for you!

D-Pad: UP makes you run faster, DOWN makes you run slower, LEFT & RIGHT make
you move in that corresponding direction.
A: Jump
B: Shoot at enemies (only if you have the Rocket).
Select: Go into 3D mode (only works if you have 3D glasses, will probably give
       you a seizure otherwise)
Start: Pause game.  You will sit down and start yawning.  Very funny.

===============================================================================
                             3. Tips and Tricks
===============================================================================
Here are some interesting Tips and Tricks that you should know about when
playing this game.

HUD - Heads Up Display

SCORE is located in the bottom left of the screen.  Each time you get an item
or a special occurance a certain amount of points will be added to your
SCORE.  Can you get the highest score?

LEVELS you are on is located on the bottom of the screen.  If you are not
currently playing a level it will simply say Game Over.

LIVES - The amount of lives you have left is on the bottom right hand side of
the screen.  You always start the game with 3 lives.  Use them sparingly.
You can only get an extra life if you get a Heart, which are not a common
or easy item to find in this game.

STARS - The amount of stars you have is also located on the bottom right hand
side of the screen.  You always start the game with 0 stars.  Stars are a
pick up item that can be found in various areas of the game.  Basically all
they do is give you points.  They're really kinda pointless to have, but
they do add an extra challenge if you are up to it.  Often times you have
to plan your jump accordingly to get many of the stars.

ITEMS - There are 7 different items in this game.  Items can be found via one
of two different ways: (1) by crashing into a pole, or (2) by finding it on
the ground and running over it to pick it up.  Here is a list of the items
  and what they do:

Atomic Power - Invincibility.  Enemies cannot hurt you after you've gotten
the Atom.  Unfortunately they only last about 4 seconds.

Cosmic Clock - More Time.  These are rare, but necessary for completing some
                of the longer levels.

Warp Balloon - If you are able to run over the Balloon, it will bring you to
an alternate world.  Ooo!  They are not found in pillars.
They can only be found by running over them.

Have A Heart - Extra life!  They are found in the alternate world, after
                getting a Balloon.

Magic Mushroom - No, not that type of Magic Mushroom.  This Mushroom will
immediately kill you.  If you see a Magic Mushroom
immediately move out of the way.

Power Potion - Invincibility, but only for one hit.  Get a potion and you
will turn an orange color.  This means you can bump into an
enemy and not die.  You will turn back into your normal color
if you do not have a potion.  Basically this just gives you
                one hit of added insurance.

Laser Missiles - Allows you to SHOOT your fire at enemies.  You can only do
this if you have the Laser Missiles.  If you also happen to
have a potion, and get touched by an enemy, even though you
will not die, you will lose this ability.

Super Stars - Super Stars can be found in various places by running into
them.  They are never found in pillars, but rather in various
places by running over them.  All this does is increase your
score and your STAR count (in the bottom right of the screen).
They're fun to collect but quite pointless really.

LEVELS - There are only 8 levels in this game, and there is a BOSS at the end
of each Level.  Each Level is divided into sub-sections.  For example, there
are four parts of Level 1, such as Level 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4, all of
which you must complete before you can get to the BOSS at the end of the
  level.

TIME - If you run out of time, you will die.  Time is measured in the bottom
middle of the screen, directly above the Level you are on.  It is measured
in that amount of white bars.  As you run through the levels, you'll notice
that the white bars will slowly decrease.  If you run out you will die.
Luckily they fill back up each time you get into a new sub-level.  Usually
unless you purposely take forever you probably wont run out of time.  Just
  don't dawdle.

3D MODE - Each copy of this game came with 3D glasses.  If you still own the
3D glasses, or a similar pair of generic Red/Blue color-fusion glasses, you
can press SELECT at any time to enter 3D mode.  3D Mode is supposed to make
it look like the objects jump out of the screen at you.  If you ask me it is
kinda annoying, but still something cool to do.

POINTS LIST - Each time you get an item, you will get a certain amount of
points for that item, which will add to your total amount of points located
in the bottom left of the screen.  Here is a list of every item/occurance
that will give you points.  It was acquired from the official Instructions
Manual so you know it's accurate.

    Missiles  -  500 points (AFTER 1st one)
    Potions  -  500 points (AFTER 1st one)
Atomic Power  -  500 points (AFTER 1st one)
    Stars  -  50 points
Junior Jumpers  -  500 points (AFTER 1st one)
Super Jumpers  -  500 points (AFTER 1st one)
    Meanies  -  100 points
    Willies  -  100 points
    Robot Heads  -  200 points
    Hands  -  200 points
    Clams  -  200 points
    Spinners  -  200 points
    Dog Faces  -  200 points
    Vapor Clouds  -  200 points
    TVs  -  200 points
    Serpentbeasts  -  200 points

ENEMIES - There are various enemies in this entire game.  Do not touch them,
they are harmful!  There are roughly 15 enemies in this game.  Here is a
list of the enemies of this game along with a rough description, as found
in the Instructions Manual for this game.

Calamitous Clam  -  This giant underwater monster will try to eat you
alive.  Stay away from it.  Here's a hint:
                                                       It moves in circles.
Diamond Demon  -  Like most real diamonds, this thing is indestructable,
                      so watch out!!!
Dog Face  -  This guy's as tough as he is ugly.  What's worse, he can't
be shot!  Stay as far away from him as you can.
Hand Man  -  This roving hand tries to stop any and everything that gets
in its way.  Including you.  So ditch it.
Mean TV  -  A deadly piece of video technology.  Blast it!
Menacing Meanies  -  You run into these guys all over the place - from
the second you set foot in Solar System #517.  They
may change colors, depending on what World you're in.
But they'll always be a menace.  Stay out of their
way.  Or ZAP them with your LASER MISSILE!
Robot Head  -  Like the Menacing Meanines, these guy will try to bump you
off.  Avoid 'em.  Or shoot 'em.
Sea Shell  -  A pretty little thing.  That will try to stop you dead in
                  your tracks.  Dance around it.
Spinners  -  These high-tack gizmos will try to chase you down.  So chace
*them* down instead with a heartly hit from your LASER
                 MISSILE.
The Serpentbeasts  -  There's one of them guarding the end of every world.
                          They're terrifying.  Treacherous.  And totally
dangerous.  It'll take several well-placed hits to
kill them.  They just don't go down easy.
Towering Infernos  -  Don't touch these treacherous towers of deadly fire.
Vapor Cloud  -  The stuff this thing puts out is 100% pure poison.  Attack
                    it.  Before it attack's you.
Venus Die Trap  -  Don't get stuck in this thing's sticky tendrils.  Slip
by it.  Or slip it a deadly blast.
White Willies  -  They look kind of like GREEN MEANIES.  But they're
                      faster.  And tougher.

GENERAL HINTS - Just a few general hints about this game.

Pits - Make sure you time your jumps well.  Many of the endless pits are
very long, and have enemies floating above them.  If you do not time
your jumps carefully, you could fall into a pit and lose your life.

Laser Missile - Always get one Laser Missile immediately so you have fire
                  abilities.

Potion - Same thing applies with a potion as it does with a Laser Missile.
Always get a potion as soon as you can.  Don't worry about getting
more than one unless you care about points.

ENDING - After beating World 8, you will have finished the game and saved Solar
System #517.  There's not really much of an ending other than some
dialogue.  All the Serpentbeast enemies will come out and teach you
how to enter the HARD MODE code.  So if you're feeling up to the
challenge of HARD MODE, follow the code, and you'll start the game
over again, but the enemies will move twice as fast!

                             4. Walkthrough
===============================================================================
This is a full Walkthrough for the game 3D Battles Of World RUnner.  There is
enough information here to guide you through the entire game.  Enjoy!

WORLD 1

World 1-1 - Easy.  Be sure to bump into the poles at the beginning of the
level to get a LASER MISSILE and a POTION.  There are also Mushrooms in
the poles which will instantly kill you so if you see a Mushroom just
move out of the way.  Run past the Green Meanies and jump over the pits.
The pits will become increasingly bigger.  Then there will be a series
of pits that are one after another.  Easy.  Soon enough you'll be in 1-2.

World 1-2 - Another easy one.  Just keep running in between the Fire Plants
and you will continuously get Stars to add to your collection of Stars.
Eventually you'll come across a Balloon, which will take you to a Bonus
World 1-B.  If you get to 1-B pick up all the Stars you can, and get the
Heart at the end of the extra man.  Then after 1-B is done, or if you
missed the Balloon, continue running forward, getting the stars in
between the Fire Plants.  Time your jumps so that you get the stars that
are in the air over pits also.  Soon enough you'll be in 1-3.

World 1-3 - The pipes at the beginning of the level hold LASER MISSILES,
POTIONS, and MAGIC MUSHROOMS, just like in 1-1.  Get the Laser Missile,
and the Potions, but obviously avoid the Magic Mushroom because it will
kill you.  Run past some more enemies and over some more pits and you'll
     quickly be in 1-4.

World 1-4 - This level is MUCH longer than the previous levels, but there
are no jumps you have to perform, except one long one at the very end
of the level.  The entire level simply consists of avoiding enemies.
There are a few scattered poles you can run into which will give you
nice items, including the first ATOMIC POWER of the game.  After the
long pit towards the end of 1-4 you'll have to fight the first
SERPENTBEAST boss of the game.  What an original name for a boss.
Serpent + Beast.  Real original there.  Anyway, just fire at him
relentlessly and he will die.  Easy.

WORLD 2 - Ooo!  Look at that cool Space-themed background!

World 2-1 - At the beginning bump into the poles to get a LASER MISSILE and
POTION.  Avoid the MUSHROOM which automatically kills you.  There are a
bit more enemies and jumps in World 2-1 than there were in World 1.  It's
a bit harder because of this but nothing you shouldn't be able to handle.
Do your best to get the Stars that can be found on the floor in random
     places.  Onto 2-2.

World 2-2 - Here introduces the HAND MAN to the game.  These evil hand
enemies will get in your way and not let you pass.  You can easily jump
over them, or simply go around them if you are fast enough.  There is a
pillar that holds a Heart in 2-2 that you can get for an extra life.
Also soon enough you will realize that there is a path set up consisting
of Stars.  Get as many stars as you can by following this Star path.
Time may be an issue in this level so don't take forever.

WORLD 2-3 - Run past a few enemies, and there will be a set of 3 pillars at
the beginning of 2-3.  Bump into all 3 for LASER MISSILE, POTION, and
ATOMIC POWER consecuitively.  Continue past a bunch of blue enemies
and you will quickly come to the boss of WORLD 2.  Defeat this
Serpentbeast the same way you always do.  Then you'll have to fight
another one!  Beat the 2nd Serpentbeast, then it's onto World 3.

WORLD 3 - Flower themed background.

World 3-1 - At the beginning hit the pillar for a POTION.  Discover the
awesomeness of the Jumpers!  If you hit a Jumper you will bounce into
the air.  You can basically get through all of 3-1 simply by positioning
yourself to bounce on Jumpers the entire time.  Just proceed at normal
speed and be sure to hit a Jumper every time.  There is one HUGE pit at
the end of 3-1 that is WAY to long to jump across normally.  Instead
use the jumpers to get across this extremely long pit.

World 3-2 - To get across the monstrous pits, simply proceed forward at
regular speed and be sure to land on each consecuitive Jumper.  When a
red fire pole gets in your way move to the left or right and be sure to
land on the next Jumper.  Proceed through the entire level at regular
speed and you should get to 3-3 just before your time runs out.

World 3-3 - After the first pit, hit the pillars for a LASER MISSILE and
POTION.  After a few more jumps there is a Balloon.  Get it to transport
to World 3-B.  In 3-B get all the stars, and be sure to bump into the
final pillar for a Heart.  Back in 3-3, jump over another pit, and then
there is a pillar immediately before another pit.  This pillar has a
HEART, so get it, but you will lose momentum from hitting the pole.  Be
sure to quickly get your momentum back by holding forward so you can get
enough clearance for this pit.  Then simply use the jumpers to clear the
following pits as you've been doing, which has become the theme of this
     level.

World 3-4 - Hit the poles at the beginning for a much needed LASER MISSILE.
The Laser Missile will help you get past the huge slew of enemies that
follows.  At the very end there is a pit.  After the pit, fight the
Serpentbeast boss.  This time he's black, which is the same color as the
background, so he is hard to see.  But you can use his shadow to get a
pretty good idea of where he is.  Kill him.  Then kill him again because
another one will appear.  And we're off to World 4!

WORLD 4 - Purple bubble themed background.

World 4-1 - In this level we discover how much a pain the HAND MEN can be.
The Hand Men are conveniantely located directly over pits.  If you are
in the middle of a jump and they block you, you will fall into the pit.
Obviously do not let this happen.  Be sure to find the Fire pillars and
jump through them.  For some reason the space in between the two fire
pillars is out of the domain of the Hand Men.  So simply position
yourself in between these pillars when jumping over the pits and you'll
be safe of the Hand Men.  After the first set of Hand Men-infested
pits, bump into the two pillars for LASER MISSILE and POTION.  Then
continue across some more Hand Men-infested pits, into 4-2.

World 4-2 - At the very beginning of 4-2 there are a circle of Fire Pillars
with a Balloon in the middle of them.  Carefully get the Balloon without
hitting the deadly pillars, which will bring you to the 4-B bonus level.
Get as many of the bouncing Stars as you can here.  Once back in 4-2,
simply run past all the enemies and you'll quickly be in 4-3.

World 4-3 - More HAND MEN.  More pits.  Nothing you haven't seen before.
This is a rather long level, so BE ABSOLUTELY sure you hit the pillar
half way through the level for the ATOMIC CLOCK which will refill your
time.  If you don't do this you likely will run out of time as this is
a very long level.  After you get through it all it's time to fight
the next Serpentbeast boss!  This time he will come back twice meaning
that you have to kill him 3 total times.  Do it.  Then go to World 5!

WORLD 5 - Futuristic themed background

World 5-1 - The Pillars here randomly contain LASER MISSILES, POTIONS, and
MUSHROOMS.  Get the Laser Missiles and Potions as you see them and avoid
the Mushrooms as you've been doing all game.  Continue past annoying
Hand Men and Blue Willies.  There's a Balloon soon enough that you can
get, which will lead you to World 5-B.  Get all the Stars in 5-B and also
get the ATOMIC CLOCK that is also in 5-B or you will run out of time
when you go back into 5-1.  Hit some more poles later on for more LASER
MISSILES if you need them.  Then you'll be in 5-2.

World 5-2 - There are lots of pillars at the beginning of World 5-2, all of
which are surrounded by Fire pillars.  Avoid the Fire pillars, but hit
the pillars.  There are lots of goodies inside the pillars, including
FIRE MISSILES, POTION, ATOMIC POWER, and even a HEART.  However, most of
them contain MUSHROOMS which kill you so if you see a Mushroom quickly
move out of the way.  Be sure to move quickly or you could run out of
     time.

World 5-3 - After the first pit there are some pillars for a POTION
opportunity.  Then after the second pit there are more pillars for a
LASER MISSILE opportunity.  Get them both if you can.  This level is just
more of the same.  Annoying HAND MEN and BLUE WILLIES.  Do not take your
time on 5-3, because the level is long, and if you take your time you
will likely run out of it and die.  Soon you will get to Serpentbeast.
This time he is green and faster than usual.  He will come back twice
after you kill him, meaning that you'll have to defeat him 3 times.
He's still the same Serpentbeast.  Easy.

WORLD 6 - Underwater themed background

World 6-1 - This is probably the most evil level ever created.  The first
pit is so monstrous that you cannot jump over it, and this time you do
not have the help of Spinners or anything else to help you across.  What
you need to do is use the tippy-top of the Pillars to jump ontop of, from
Pillar, to pillar, to pillar, to pillar, and so on... until you finally
get across the monstrous pit.  Expect to lose several lives trying to get
across this pit if you've never done it before.  This is the best
strategy I have found: Bump into the first pole at regular speed.  You
will bounce backward a bit, and then continue forward.  As you are
bouncing backward from the richochet of this pole, a little bit before
you are about to start forward again, press and HOLD the A Button to
Jump.  Be sure to HOLD the A button down.  If done correctly, you will
land ontop of the pole, and jump off of the tippy top of it.  If not done
     correctly then try, try again.

After skipping across all these pillars and finally passing this
gigantic pit, the pillars will become red Fire pillars.  At this point
you can either continue hopping on the tops of these pillars (harder)
or simply fall to the ground and jump across the pits normally (easier).
Some of the pits are smaller and some are larger, so be sure to time
your jumps accordingly.  Soon this area will end and you'll come to
three more Pillars.  Hit the 2nd one in for a much needed COSMIC CLOCK
which will refill your time.  There are two rows of pillars here, be sure
you are lined up with the pillars to the left.  Now start using the tops
of these pillars to jump across the next monstrous pit.  Soon these
standard pillars will be replaced with red Fire pillars.  That's fine,
you can still jump on the tops of them, just don't touch their fronts.
As soon as you hit the top of the 8th red Fire pillar, hold UP to start
going twice as fast forward.  Unforunately the 9th red Fire pillar is
not there so you HAVE to be going at full speed or you will not make the
gap.  After you finally get across this, you'll be in 6-2.

World 6-2 - This level has more of the HAND MEN obstacles that try to block
you from jumping across the pits.  This is nothing you haven't seen
before.  Be sure to jump across the pits inside the range of the red
Fire pillars, because for some reason that small area is out of the
domain of the Hand Men.  Soon, you will come to a spinner, followed by
a SUPER SPINNER.  Miss the regular Spinner, but hit the Super Spinner.
You will bounce SUPER high into the air, and land on another Super
Spinner.  Now you will be in 6-3.

World 6-3 - There is another Super Spinner at the very beginning, but it is
followed immediately by a Balloon so miss the Spinner and get the
Balloon, which will take you into 6-B.  Get as many Stars as you
can, and hit the pillars in this bonus stage for LASER MISSION and a
POTION.  After 6-B is done, continue forward dodging more enemies, and
you will soon be at 6-4.

World 6-4 - There are a few pillars at the beginning, one of which holds a
POTION if you want it.  Continue forward past standard BLUE WILLIE
enemies.  A good strategy is to bounce on the pillars so that you don't
have to worry about the Blue Willies.  Soon enough you will come to the
boss, the next Serpentbeast.  Simply kill him the way you normally do
when he shows up.  After you kill him he comes back 3 more times, which
means you have to kill him FOUR times to advance to World 7.  This is
tedious, I know, but necessary to move on.

WORLD 7 - Sky themed background

World 7-1 - The first thing you will notice is that you are running faster
than you normally do.  You are at DOUBLE SPEED!  However the speed
increase shouldn't give you a problem, because this part is simple.
Just avoid red Fire pillars and jump pits, and you'll quickly be on to
     7-2.

World 7-2 - Hit the pillars at the beginning for a much needed LASER
MISSILE, POTION, and ATOMIC POWER.  Run past a few more easy enemies/
obstacles and you'll quickly be in 7-3.

World 7-3 - There is a Balloon opportunity at the very beginning of 7-3.
This will take you to 7-B if you get it.  Get the few Stars in 7-B and
be sure to hit the pillar at the end for a HEART.  Back in 7-3, simply
avoid the red Fire pillars and jump across a few more platforms at
Double Speed, and you'll find yourself quickly facing the next
Serpentbeast.  He moves around a lot more this time but is still the
same, easy old Serpentbeast.  Kill him the way you normally would.  This
time he can take more damage than before, and his head is the hardest
part to defeat.  Your biggest factor here is defeating him within the
time limit.  This time you have to beat him 4 times to advance to World
     8.

WORLD 8 - Solar system #517 themed background

World 8-1 - There are four pillars at the very beginning.  One holds ATOMIC
POWER, but the other 3 hold MUSHROOMS.  Bang into these pillars and if
a Mushroom appears, quickly move out of the way, but if ATOMIC POWER
appears, then get it.  There is another pit that is way too big to jump
over.  You will have to use the tops of the pillars to jump from Pillar
to Fire-pillar and so on to get across the huge pit.  Yes it's a pain but
just use the same techniques you learned in 6-1 and you should be fine.
Continue pillar-jumping across a few more pits, and you'll quickly be
     in 8-2.

World 8-2 - As soon as you get into 8-2, you will speed up, so quickly move
out of the way of the Fire-pillar or you will run into it and die.  This
level is not hard, but it is sped up.  The first half of 8-2 consists of
avoiding Fire-pillars as you jump over the pits at double speed.  Soon
you will come to some STARS, and more HAND MEN that will try to block
you.  Get past these HAND MEN by staying near the Fire-pillars as you've
done before in the game.  Continue to run past a few SEA SHELLS, and
MEAN TVs, and you'll advance to 8-3.

World 8-3 - One of the first four pillars contains a POTION but the other
three have Mushrooms in them.  Get the POTION then jump over a huge pit,
a few more enemies, and another large pit, and then you'll be in 8-4.

World 8-4 - Jump over the first pit near the Fire-pillar to avoid the HAND
MEN from blocking you.  There is another pillar directly BEFORE the
second pit.  It contains a HEART which will give you an extra life.  Get
this Heart, then jump over the next few pits, and you'll come to the
final Serpentbeast of the game.  He can take more damage this time than
he could in previous levels, but you still kill him the same.  BLAST HIM!
His head is the biggest pain, which will turn orange right before it is
about to fry.  This time he will come back FIVE times after you beat him
once, meaning you will have to defeat him a total of SIX times before he
is gone for good and you beat the game.

ENDING

The ending is kinda cool I guess.  All the different Serpentbeasts will
come out and each will give you one part of the HARD MODE code.  It lasts
a few minutes, and then you will blast the words "SEE YOU" and "AGAIN" and
then the game will end.  You can try HARD MODE now if you want for an added
challenge.  Congrats on beating the game.
