Soccer Brawl is a futuristic take on the game of soccer, for the Neo Geo. It
has a very arcade feel to it, in that the gameplay is fast and simple with no
real complexities to it. The games are played by robots, and they have power
meters to charge and use super-charged shots/punches against the opposition.
The biggest difference between the teams is the special shot that team's
Captain can perform. The game moves along quickly, but the computer is just
terrible, so you will find yourself frustrated very early on. For the
experience, I would recommend trying this, but if you want soccer, stick to
the Super Sidekicks series.

==========
Game Modes
==========
At the title screen, after you press Start, there will be a couple of quick
options you can set. You can choose the difficulty (Beginner, Normal, Hard,
or MVS), and how long each half is (15, 30, 45, or 90 seconds). Once you do
that, press the A button and you will go to the list of game modes:
League Mode: In this mode, you play against the other seven teams for a
chance to win the championship.
VS Mode: Play a single game against a second human player.
Once you select a game mode, you will be shown the game's controls. Then, you
get to pick from eight teams to play as. The only notable difference between
the teams is their formation. After a team is selected, you can choose the
stadium you wish to play in. They are both the same stadium, only one has a
dome and the other is open. After that, the game begins.
================
General Gameplay
================
The main mode of play is the League Mode, which is sort of like a tournament.
There are eight teams total in this game. You play against every other team
at random until you defeat them all and win the championship!
The games are split into two periods with 45 seconds apiece (you can change
these settings when you start the game). You do not have the option to switch
your players manually during the game; you generally have control of the
person closest to the ball.
During the actual game, your team's available actions will depend on if you
are on the offense (possessing the ball currently) or defense (other team has
the ball). Those controls are as follows:
Offense: A - Kick/shoot
B - Pass (you need to face the direction you pass and move the
player to it in order to successfully pass)
Defense: A - Slide (this is how you steal the ball from an opponent)
B - Jump (leap in the air to block an opposing pass)
Super Shot: A + B (hold buttons to charge Power Meter, release to shoot)
Generally, the game will give you control of the player closest to the ball.
This can become particularly annoying because the other players are computer
controlled, and you can become confused over who you are controlling rather
quickly. It does not help that the computer is rather bad in this game, so be
prepared for a LOT of interceptions! Each team also has a player designated
as the Captain of sorts, who is the best player on that team. That player
also looks slightly different than the other players (it will be obvious).
If the ball goes out of bounds during play, by bouncing off the goal posts or
being kicked out accidentally, possession of the ball goes to the opposing
team. Basically, if your team was the last to touch the ball as it went out
of bounds, the other team will get the ball. To return the ball to play, it
will be kicked/thrown in, either from the sides or by the goal keeper,
depending on where and how the ball went out of bounds.
If you are on the defense and the opposition is approaching your goal, you
seem to have manual control of your goal keeper. He will move automatically
to try and block the ball, but because of his size, it is easy to block
shots. However, he tends to take a while getting up after a diving block,
which means you really need other players in the vicinity to help out. When a
goal is made, play resumes at the center line with the opposing team starting
with the ball again.
A HUGE aspect of gameplay, even moreso than the standard sliding and
tackling, is the Power Shot. Hold A + B to fill your Power Meter at the top
of the screen, then release to shoot a specially charged shot. This can be
used to kick the ball very powerfully, knocking over anyone in its way
(except the goal keeper, who can block it), or if you are on defense, you can
seriously injure the opposing player with a strong punch. The Power Shot is
essential to your success in this game.
The Captain of each team has a special Power Shot that moves in a different
way. Often times those shots can not be used to make goals in (except for the
special shots by Japan and Korea), but they will certainly help you get
across the field quickly. These will be detailed in the Teams section.
If the ball is not under possession by any player, you can simply run up and
take it by touching it. If you slide or tackle, you do not get automatic
possession; you still need to get the ball yourself. There are no fouls in
this game, so you don't need to worry about being too rough with the opposing
players! Be very careful when attempting to shoot at the goal, as there is NO
automatic aiming in this game! If you are not facing the direction you intend
on shooting at, you WILL miss. The camera view does not help you here either.
After a game (in League Mode), the defeated teams in your group will be a
shaded color and you will go on to face the next team in the group. After all
five other teams in your group are defeated, you will have won the game!
=========
Post Game
=========
If in the event a game is tied after the second period ends, you will
automatically go into a Penalty Kick showdown.
In Penalty Kick mode, each side takes turns attempting to make a goal. The
view is of the net with the goal keeper in front of it. If it is your turn to
kick, you will be able to hold the joystick in one of three directions and
press A to kick in that direction. If the goal keeper anticipates your aim
and blocks it, you get nothing; if you make it in, you get a goal.
If you are the goal keeper, you need to take a guess at where the opposing
player will kick the ball and move/not move accordingly. This mode is pretty
much completely random, since you can not truly know exactly where the ball
will be kicked and whether or not the opposition will block correctly. After
three tries each, the team with the most goals wins. If there is still a tie,
there will be more single-round penalty kicks where both sides get one turn
and if the tie is broken, you have a winner. Otherwise, this will continue.
