/// INTRODUCTION /// \ ".|." /

WinBack is a third-person shooter released by Koei for N64 in 1999. It is
considered by many to be the first cover-based shooter. You know all those games
released in the 20-aughts with gritty, "realistic" gunplay and monochromatic
palettes? Their DNA can be traced back to WinBack. It's no surprise KOEI, of all
companies, made this game. They've have a habit of taking standard genres and
pushing them in niche directions. WinBack is not your average third-person
shooter. Or, at least, it wasn't in 1999. The effect it had on the genre, tho,
was the exact opposite of Koei's other franchises like Musou and Nobunaga's
Ambition. Instead of becoming more niche, it became the standard.
So, how does it play? Honestly, pretty competently, especially for something
mapped to Nintendo 64's freakish controller. The controls are comprehensive,
responsive and have nuance where it counts. Some would consider this game a
hidden treasure. I say it excels at being a 3rd person shooter in general and
succeeds in the areas it attempts to innovate. A graphically enhanced version
was released for Playstation 2 in 2000, which added a "third ending" that has
been the subject of much confusion. While this FAQ CAN be used to beat the PS2
version, the event flags that trigger the endings are slightly different.
As always, my objective with this FAQ is to help you beat the game as easily as
possible. I don't do extensive glossaries, data mining, stat tables, etc. I only
tell you how to play and beat the game in a manageable way. Aside from the
obvious platform difference, this guide should also apply to the PS2 remake.

WinBack allows you to "reconfigure" your controls, but only for the A, B and
C-Down buttons. Everything else is quite comfortably mapped in default
locations. Given the large number of movements and maneuvers at your disposal,
Koei actually did a really good job making them intuitive to perform.

The main menu of the game contains these options:
STORY - Start the single-player campaign or Load a Save file
VERSUS - Begin the multiplayer VS mode (not covered in this FAQ)
OPTION - Change your controls and other game settings
TUTORIAL - Play the Tutorial mission; it's very good and I recommend it!
If you select OPTION, you will be presented with this menu:
GAME CONFIG - Set the difficulty of the Story mode (Easy, Normal and Hard)
SOUND - Set music and sound effects volume and choose Stereo/Monaural sound
CONTROLLER - Set controls for all 4 players and toggle inverted look controls
RECORD - Your records for completing the Story mode on each difficulty
CONTROLLER PAK - Save or Load data from your N64 Memory Pak
EXIT - Return to main menu
If you press START in-game, you'll be shown this menu:
At the top-center is your current time. This does not run in the menu.
MAP - Look at the map. You are the pale, blue dot and your destination is the
red dot; the name of the area is at the bottom
WEAPON - Change your currently equipped weapon or look at all your weapons
ITEM - Use or look at any Items in your possession
TEAM - 3D models, information and status of all your teammates. No, this is not
a squad-based game; your teammates are just other characters
CONFIG - Access a short version of the Options Menu and the ability to Quit back
to the main menu
EXIT - Resume the game
Not gonna lie, I'm impressed by the amount of polish in the menu presentation.
The ability to look at all the character models for absolutely no reason is fun.

/// 3.) GAMEPLAY /// \ ".|." /
"._ | _."

The gameplay in WinBack is pretty simple: navigate the environment using combat
and stealth, solving some minor puzzles along the way. Unlike Metal Gear Solid,
tho, killing enemies is usually the best option. As long as you have Life, ammo
and time to spare, fighting is always viable. Your basic Handgun has infinite
ammo, so don't hold back: even early game enemies will take half a mag to
dispatch. In short, WinBack is less about avoiding enemies and more about
second-to-second combat performance.
The Story mode is split into 31, independent stages, many containing 1 or more
Checkpoints. If you lose all your Life during a stage, you will be allowed to
Continue at the most recent Checkpoint. Just press Start before the timer
expires. You can Continue as many times as you want. You can also Save after
completing each stage and load the game from that point.
You will only have access to items you pick up in the environment, so make sure
to pick up what you can. You have a hard limit on ammo and can't store Medkits,
so don't bother if you're already full on ammo or Life. Items DO NOT respawn, so
use them judiciously as you WILL backtrack thru areas often. Life regenerates at
the beginning of each stage, so factor that into your Medkit usage, too. If
you're low on supplies, try destroying crates or exploring.
How quickly you complete the game determines whether you get the Good, Normal or
Bad Ending. The Normal Ending is EXCLUSIVE to the PS2 version. Quicker is,
naturally, better. Luckily, time is only registered if you finish a stage so
just load your game or die if you're falling behind.
Score is tabulated after each stage based on total damage taken, enemies killed
and # of headshots. You can get an extra 100 points, each, for completing the
stage using only your Handgun, taking no damage, and using zero Medkits. You
also get a LARGE completion bonus at the very end of the game. Score doesn't
give you anything during the playthru and only unlocks multiplayer avatars and
game modes. In other words: don't sweat it.
The in-game HUD is so simple that I'm not gonna bother making art for it. Life
meter at the bottom right, ammo in your current magazine and total ammo for your
equipped weapon at the bottom left. You'll see a green crosshair over enemies
that you are currently targeting and a red crosshair over destructible objects
if you aim at them. The green crosshair will be open if you're auto-aiming and a
closed rectangle if you're locked-on. When you or an enemy are hit, you'll see a
flash of color indicating where the hit landed: blue is a limb shot, green is a
body shot and red is a headshot. That's it.

/// 4.) GENERAL TIPS /// \ ".|." /
"._ | _."
"|"
<> Rely on your Handgun; it has infinite ammo and can handle most scenarios.
<> Keep your Handgun fully loaded between fights. For Machinegun and Shotgun,
use all the ammo before reloading or just let it auto-reload (shoot while
empty). Silenced Handgun and Rocket Launcher can't be reloaded and must be
replaced entirely.
<> Jean Luc can't hit moving targets worth crap so either wait for targets to
stop moving or shoot them directly from the front or behind.
<> Use the lock-on feature, especially if you're behind cover. You'll want to
line up your shot before you expose yourself.
<> Kill enemies with powerful weapons and vantage points first.
<> Let your auto-aim land on its target before squeezing the trigger or you'll
miss, waste ammo and interrupt its movement.
<> You can shoot as far as you can see, but you'll have to manually aim at
distant targets.
<> Weapons have different auto-aim ranges. Machinegun has the longest and Shot-
gun has the shortest.
<> Enemies are programmed to get to a position before they start firing. You can
cut them off or run past them before then.
<> AVOID melee combat with regular enemies. It's basically a death sentence.
<> Use the camera to look around corners and target enemies from behind cover.
Remember, you can only target enemies you can see.
<> Input is relative so, if you turn the camera while running, Jean Luc will
turn with it. I prefer doing this over using the stick as it allows me to
always look ahead.
<> If you're auto-aiming, don't move your Analog Stick or you'll cancel it.
<> Medical Kits are consumed IMMEDIATELY, cannot be stored and do not respawn,
so use them wisely; you'll probably be backtracking thru that area later.
Life is fully restored after each level, so don't heal at the end of a stage.
<> Time is only saved at Checkpoints and when you complete a stage. If you're
not happy with your time, just die or reset.
<> Headshots and shots from behind will instakill MOST enemies. They also do
extra damage against you and can knock you down. If you're running past foes,
dodge and beware of enemies above you. You can easily lose 50-80% Life.
<> Enemy spawns are determined by two factors: your position and whether or not
a previous wave of enemies has been cleared. If you advance or let enemies
advance to certain points before killing them, you can prevent spawns!
<> Enemies are not free-roaming. They only spawn in predetermined formations
when you enter a room, stand in a certain spot or trigger an event. That
means, if you need time to think, just don't move lol.
<> Use explosive crates/barrels to your advantage. Stay clear of them yourself.
<> C4 is very contextual. Save it for specific spots. Same with rockets.
<> Chickenwire fences offer no protection.
<> Sometimes, you'll be put into a position by small cutscenes. Remember to hold
whatever buttons you need to in order to resume the game in that position.
<> Shooting an enemy causes them to recoil. You can use this to your advantage
to buy time. But, it can cause enemies to accidentally "dodge" your shots, so
line 'em up properly (duh).
<> While melee combat is essentially a non-option, kicking your enemy up-close
may give you just enough time to reload or shoot them.
<> Auto-aiming and locking-on (C-Down) are not the same. Lock-on will keep your
camera aimed at the enemy and persists even if they go far away.
<> Aiming at an enemy, then tapping up and firing can result in a headshot. Or,
shooting them once in the chest, then once again when they hunch over.
<> Use the short period of invincibility after taking damage to your advantage.
It does not, however, protect you from explosions and lasers.
<> The weapon you have equipped and the amount of ammo in it is saved between
Checkpoints and stages, so always reload and equip a desired weapon before
a boss stage or going thru a boss door.
<> Cutscenes affect the environment. Sometimes, skipping them will nullify their
effects to your advantage.
<> Unless it's part of their spawn/despawn behavior, enemies can't use doors.
<> Headshots will not alert enemies that aren't already alert.
<> Alerted enemies will always see you, even if you're crouching behind cover or
approaching from behind. Stealth melee won't work on them, either.
<> The Silenced Handgun and Flashlight are useless lol.

/// 5.) WALKTHROUGH /// \ ".|." /

<> PREFACE <>
I recommend playing the Tutorial mission first as it's actually quite well-made
and will familiarize you with the basic gameplay. I also recommend toggling the
aim/look inversion to your liking. This Walkthrough is for NORMAL difficulty
and, unless I say otherwise, assume I'm always using the Handgun. I will not be
mentioning or picking up ammo that I don't need. I also won't mention Medkits if
they are in plain sight. Use them at your own discretion.
The AI in this game is pretty adaptable, so be prepared to improvise if things
don't go as written. The TARGET TIMES for each stage are perfectly doable. They
are not personal records, but generous estimates of how long a stage takes if
you know the procedure (ie. if you follow the Walkthrough). You will likely get
the Good Ending, even if you exceed the times by 2-3 minutes. Don't fret at the
length of this walkthrough. While a few of the later missions ARE long, the bulk
of this text just describes enemy encounters. Each encounter is handled in a
specific way, so it becomes very verbose. If you look at the Target Times, most
missions are over in under 8 minutes.
One, last note: WinBack is a game with a LOT of spatial manipulation, so my
words may not 100%, accurately reflect what you need to do. Let me know if any
descriptions gave you trouble (e-mail "
[email protected]") and how I can
make them more lucid. In the first 3 areas, words like "container" and
"crate/box" are easy to understand as their designs are distinct. In the 4th
area, it becomes a little muddy as large and small crates look similar.
///////////////////////////// AREA 1: OUTER GROUND /////////////////////////////
<> 5-1.) STAGE 1 <> TARGET TIME: <7:00
Run forward and dispatch the 2 enemies from around the container. The 1st guy
drops a Mag. Go around the bend and stand behind the 2nd brown box. Kill the
enemies as they approach. Enter the white storage container to your right for
Shells and a Silenced Handgun. Forget the Mag. Proceed and stand behind the blue
crate. Dispatch the 2 ground guards, then kill the rooftop guard from behind the
truck. Enter the building.
If you need a Medical Kit, hide until the guard puts one the table. If not,
stealth melee him and pick up the Ammo Pouch on the box. When you exit, an enemy
may be waiting outside. Off him, then proceed.
After the cutscene, swing around the corner and kill both guards. Up ahead is a
laser. Shoot the control box. Duck behind the crates and kill the FIRST guard
you see. Let the other 2 flee to the next area. Clear a path by shooting the
crate in the barricade. The dead guard should have dropped a Medkit. Kill the
other 2. One is hiding behind the large, blue container. DO NOT move backwards.
Letting the 2 guards flee prevented 3 more from spawning and turning back will
spawn them. Shoot the rooftop enemy and descend the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Charge ahead and kill the enemy. The path is blocked by lasers, so take a right,
then a left, then continue until 2 more guards spawn. Retreat to the box behind
you and shoot them from there. Destroy the left-hand crate and go up the ladder.
Dispatch the guard to your right, then advance a bit to kill the other. Grab the
C4 just before the bridge. Cross the two bridges, then run up to the box and
kill the enemy ahead. Destroy the box for a Medkit. Snipe the control panel
across the trench, RELOAD, then head back the way you came (because Jean Luc
can't jump down 5 feet). Rush back to the 1st bridge and kill the 2 guards as
they cross it. Reenter the trench via the ladder.
Run forward and kill the guard that enters from the left. Stick to the right
wall and peek around the corner to kill another. Go to the spot previously
blocked by lasers and stick to the left wall. There are 3 guards around the
bend. Target the center guard first (he summons reinforcements), then the other
two. Clear a path, follow the trench and go up the ladder.
Immediately turn to your right and duck RIGHT of the box. Kill the guard in
front of you. Peek over the box and kill the other. Stay there and kill a 3rd.
Do NOT go straight for the door in the fence. Instead, go toward where the 3rd
guard was and loop AROUND the container. This will make the next guard spawn
behind you for some reason. Grab the Medkit, then go down the ladder.
When you round the corner, a cutscene will play. Hold Crouch as the cutscene
ends and the guards will not spot you. Target the ORANGE guard, then pop up when
the laser is FAR from you and take him out. Take out the other, then shoot the
laser control up on the left ledge. Go up the ladder and shoot the enemy in the
back. Go thru the door.
<> 5-2.) STAGE 2 <> TARGET TIME: <10:00
Wait for the nearest guard to turn away, then follow the other guard around the
container. Melee kill him. Use the blue container ahead as cover to kill the
remaining guards. In the clearing, stand behind the nearest blue crate and kill
the first 2 guards. Get close to the 3rd, THEN kill him to prevent 2 spawns. Go
up the ramp to your left. Shoot the box UNDER the dark box and grab another Ammo
Pouch inside the truck. Grab the Medkit, if needed, and proceed.
Shoot the laser control panel over the box, then advance and kill the guards.
Hide behind the orange container ahead and dispatch 2 more guards thru the fence
(somehow). You may need to step out a bit to kill the one up top. Grab the C4
inside the nearby box and the Mag behind the blue crate in the fenced area.
Enter the door.
Go straight thru another door. Dispatch 3 guards, using the conveyor belts/boxes
as cover. Move past the belts and shoot the crate in your way. As you round the
next corner, another guard will enter. Take him out, then hit the switch on the
wall. 2 more guards spawn behind you. Kill them, then destroy the laser control
that was hidden behind the now-moving boxes. Proceed past the lasers. Ignore the
right-hand door (3 enemies and a Medkit) and go straight outside.
Once outside, you'll see a small cutscene. Hold R as the cutscene plays and kill
the guard. We can't get past the lasers, so go back inside. Step forward, then
quickly kill the guards that burst thru the wall. Enter the wall and destroy the
crates. Go thru the door for a Medkit, if you need it, then climb the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Run to the RIGHT side of the pipes and kill the guard as he approaches. Destroy
the box, grab the Medkit, if you want, then go thru the door. You're supposed to
stay hidden behind the boxes here, but don't bother. It's a huge time waster and
you're better off shooting everyone. Exit onto another rooftop. Charge ahead and
attack the guards aggressively as it's hard to shoot them over the pipes. Climb
down the ladder.
You are now on the other side of the laser wall. Check the barricade near you
for Medkit. There are 3 enemies around the corner, so peek around the white
structure. Target the enemy dressed in BLACK first as he'll attempt to flank
you. Go thru the door, then turn left. If you're fast, you can kill the fleeing
guard. If not, he'll enter the building. Hug the wall of the building and shoot
the enemies thru the doorway. GRAB THE KEY on the table and run back to the last
area, ignoring any enemies.
Wait a second, dispatch the guard that passes in front of you, then the one on
the roof. Peek around the corner and kill 3 more guards. If you kill the 1st
quickly, the 2nd will die on the lasers (lol). Deactivate the lasers and reenter
the building. Run forward and kill the guard, then use the conveyors as cover to
kill 3 more. If you're low on Life, grab the Medkit in the lobby area of the
building. You can shoot the laser control thru the wall window: it's right
beside the Kit. The other room across the hall has a guard and Shells.
Exit the building and make a right. Shoot the 2 guards thru the fence as you
advance. Reload, then kill the next 3. You can be pretty aggressive about this.
Enter the door to end the stage.
<> 5-3.) STAGE 3 <> TARGET TIME: <7:30
Leave the room and approach the truck for a cutscene. After the cutscene, turn
around. Destroy the crate lodged in the short wall and go thru the gap. Go ALONG
THE WALL and shoot the guard that spawns to your left in the back. This prevents
3 spawns. Look to your right and shoot the far guard over the wall. Another
guard will appear on the orange crates ahead. When you approach the staggered,
blue crates, a guard will pop out from behind them. Kill him. Stand behind the
LAST crate and shoot the control panel to your left. Roll (Crouch + Forward + A)
under the laser and stick close to the building to elude the window snipers.
Look to your right and destroy another laser control panel. Go back the way you
came, dispatching the lone enemy along the way.
Back by the truck, you'll face 3 more guards. Use the explosive barrel to kill
2, then shoot the other. Advance until you see a truck DRIVE up. Stand behind
the crates closest to the truck and kill the 3 guards that emerge. Shoot the
crate in the wall to your right and enter. You'll reach a grassy area with blue
crates. Kill the guard that walks out from behind the 1st. Go around the RIGHT
side of the other crates and kill 2 more. Advance and shoot the shotgun soldier
before he gets a chance to aim.
< CHECKPOINT >
Ignore the running guy. If you have more than one C4, place one riiiight next to
the turret and detonate it. Problem solved. Proceed directly across the lot into
another grassy area. Charge between the orange crates and kill the shotgun
guard. Ignore the enemies and shoot the control panel in the distance. Head back
to the lot, then in the direction the turret was aimed. Use the low, TAN walls
to kill the guards. It's hard to shoot them over the grassy medians. Proceed and
kill 2 more guards. DON'T GO LEFT. Instead, go toward the electric fence and
shoot the control panel. Enter. A shotgun guard will emerge from behind the last
crate. Kill him, grab the Medkit and GRAB THE KEY behind the crate. Turn back
and kill 2 guards thru the fence. Enter the building across from you and hit the
switch. The ladder on the backside will drop. Go to it and climb up.
Pick up the Rocket Launcher! Snipe the laser control panel on top of the blue
crate (with your Handgun). Go back down. The door to the next stage (the door of
the large building) is now accessible. Do whatever you must to get over there.
<> 5-4.) STAGE 4 <> TARGET TIME: <2:00
!!! BOSS: LILA !!!
This boss is super easy. Step slightly to the left of the pillar you start
behind. Kill the single guard that spawns. After that, cling to the pillar. From
this position, you'll be able to potshot Lila 'til she dies. Wait until she
either stops firing or her bullets sweep past you, then peek out and hit her.
She has invincibility frames after each hit, so be patient.
///////////////////////////// AREA 2: MAIN OFFICE //////////////////////////////
<> 5-5.) STAGE 5 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
This is a quick one. Go down the hall, kill the guard and roll under the raised
gate. You'll see another cutscene ahead. 2 enemies are approaching from behind,
so weave forward and kill the shotgun guard, leaving them behind. There's Medkit
at the bottom of the stairs if you get hurt. Go thru the door.
Enter the sewer system thru the far door. Step to your left to get a clear shot
at the guard. The laser here is timed, so step past it once it's inactive. Kill
the near guard, go around the corner and quickly press the switch. Pressing it
will despawn the other guard. Now, turn around and kill the guard that spawned
across the way, then use the crates to cross the canal. They should have lined
up near the laser. Shoot the guard to your right. Run straight forward and kill
another guard, then duck behind the LEFT side of the wooden box to kill the
other 2. Hit the next wall switch. Cross the bridge and round the corner
aggressively, killing both guards. The far one should be retreating, making him
an easy target. Enter the door.
There's an enemy around the server bank to your left. Let him turn around, then
melee kill him. Stick to the very end of the 2nd row of sever banks and kill the
guards around the corner. Enter the next room for a cutscene. Swiftly duck
behind the 2 barrels on the right side of the room. The red guard will try to
take cover to your left. Remain crouched and kill him. The other 2 will take
cover directly opposite you. Pop up and shoot them point-blank. Approach the
large door to end the stage. Told ya it was quick.
<> 5-6.) STAGE 6 <> TARGET TIME: <5:00
Here's another short one. Turn around and take cover behind the dark box on the
right. Kill the 2 guards. Go around the 1st server bank and wait a sec for
another guard to appear. There are 2 doors at the end of the room. If you have
at least 1 C4, you can go straight. Personally, I recommend going right and
picking up a C4 in the sewer, regardless. You can never have enough explosions.
Either way, you'll ultimately need to go thru the 1st door. Cling to the
machinery on your left and patiently take out the 2 guards. They hit HARD and
shoot FAST. Destroy any boxes in your way and grab the Medkit to your left
before entering the door.
Go up the stars. 2 enemies will appear at the top of the 2nd flight. Kill them.
Run around the corner, stand behind the dark box and dispatch the 2 more guards.
There's another around the next corner. The 1st door to your left leads to a
bathroom with a Medkit. Ew. Bathroom medicine.
Go thru the 2nd door and you'll see a cutscene. 2 enemies will emerge from the
right side of the open room. Stay where you are and kill them both, then plant a
C4 next to the turret and detonate it. You just saved yourself a minute+. Run
across the room, duck thru the hole and take the EXIT door.
< CHECKPOINT >
As you descend the stairs, you'll be attacked by 3 guards. Roll to the left
barricade (the one the enemy is behind) and shoot them up close. Don't worry,
the shotgun guy can't hit you if you duck. Grab the Medkit behind the small
barricade in the corner. Go thru the door.
Roll under the laser FIRST, then kill the guard to prevent 2 spawns. Use the
door. Take cover behind the LIGHT box and kill the 2 guards on the bridge. Now,
turn to your right. If you stand to the RIGHT of the near, dark box and adjust
your camera carefully, you can juuust barely hit the laser control panel. Do NOT
destroy any boxes or you'll summon 3 guards. Reenter the room and take out the 2
guards. When you exit, you'll be attacked by 3 more. The door to the next stage
is just up the stairs, so you can run past them.
<> 5-7.) STAGE 7 <> TARGET TIME: <10:00
Crouch thru the hole you created. Turn right and make a beeline for the door.
When you enter, immediately duck behind the nearest box and dispatch the 3
guards. Enter the next door. Shoot one of the light boxes once to spawn a guard.
Kill him, destroy the boxes, pick up the Medkit and shoot the panel to your
right. You can't avoid the blue laser. RELOAD before opening the door, then ROLL
forward as you enter the room. Kill the 3 guards. Exit back onto the mezzanine
and go left toward more mooks. Peek around the column and kill the first 2, then
roll to the nearest box and kill the 3rd. Move forward for another cutscene.
Before you proceed, reload. The enemies in this particular room are DEADLY. As
soon as you enter, roll behind the control panels. Target the red guard to your
right and kill him first, then the others. Destroy the panel on the right side
of the room before proceeding.
Upon entering the next room, step to the LEFT of the box and hold R as the
cutscene plays. Shoot the guard once to make him flee, then shoot him in the
back. Reload. Go around the corner, crouch and shoot the guard thru the glass.
Remain crouched as you approach the next guard. Kill him and position yourself
where he was. A shotgun soldier is to your right. Shoot him or the explosive
crate beside him. Circle back to the room's entrance for Medkit and DISARM THE
BOMB where the shotgun guard was. Somehow, it didn't blow up?
As you exit the room, quickly go to the box to your right and shoot the guard.
Another guard is behind the pillar ahead. Go left, run up to the left-side box
and use it as cover to kill 2 more. Go back thru the hole in the gate and take
the 1st door. Go down the stairs and thru the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
Ah yes, more backtracking. Go thru the door and stealth kill the guard. Crouch
thru the hole in the wall. In this room, step forward slightly and shoot the
explosive box. 2 guards will die in the blast. Forget the 3rd and move on. After
the cutscene, go around the perimeter of the large room. When you reach the
opposite corner, a gate will close. From that position, look up to the balcony
and shoot the control panel. Get the Medkit, if needed, then go thru the near
door. Immediately start shooting the enemy in front of you, then hug the white
pillar. Kill the other 2 enemies from here. In the next room, kill the first 2
enemies over the barrier. A 3rd is left of the pillar.
Pass thru the hole and melee both guards. What an awkward place to die. Exit the
restroom and enter the door to your left. Destroy the control box behind the
crate, then revisit the restroom to DISARM THE BOMB in the LAST STALL.
Exit again and go down the hall. Around the corner, take aim at the explosive
crate. Use it to kill the near guard. Shoot the other from a distance. DO NOT
ADVANCE until both are dead: a very dangerous shotgun guard is hidden beyond the
draw distance lol. Crouch-walk to the box in the middle of the hallway and shoot
him or the explosive crate near him. Descend the stairs and enter the next area.
< CHECKPOINT >
Go left and kill the guard over the crate. Take the door to your right. Remain
crouched as the cutscene ends. Wait for the visible guard to turn around and
stealth kill him. Pop around the corner and shoot the other 2 guards. As you
approach the door, 3 enemies will enter the room from the opposite end. For fun,
hit the switch and watch the carnage. If you want, collect the Shells and C4
dropped by the crates or enter the door to end the stage.
<> 5-8.) STAGE 8 <> TARGET TIME: <10:00
We're backtracking--again. Advance and off the 2 enemies that enter. Kill the
guards ahead while they're busy chatting. Enter the newly opened door and hit
the switch. Exit and go thru the door in the opposite wall, dispatching the
guard in your way. You'll have to slog back thru the sewers while taking out a
ton of soldiers. This part is all brute force, so I won't detail it. Descend
into the lowered water when you reach a ladder. To your right will be a large,
dark sewage tunnel. Run and quickly roll into it. In the next area, two guards
will enter from the ledge to your left. Kill them. Look in the direction they
came for a laser panel and shoot it. Go down the route the laser was blocking
and up the ladders.
Stealth kill the guard in this room. Outside, wait for the nearest guard to turn
around. Stealth kill him, then descend the nearby ladder. The other guards will
miss you. When you're in the trench, kill any guards above, then take the next
ladder up. You'll emerge beside a bridge guarded by a sentry gun. Dash past and
descend the ladder. 5 guards await below. There's Medkit behind the last guard,
just before the next ladder. Ascend, then swiftly enter the door. Run around the
room and use the control panel. Kill the guard that enters and exit again. Duck
just outside the door and shoot the explosives to your right to kill a guard. 2
more are around the corner of the building. Use the sentry gun by pressing Shoot
beside it. R + Shoot fires it. Mow down enemies 'til they stop spawning, then
cross the bridge and the lined-up crates, killing the enemy in your path. Ignore
the others and enter the door. Press against the wall left of the moving laser
and kill the 2 guards, then roll under it. 2 more enemies are in the next room.
Kill the lower one first, then the one up the stairs. Go thru the door behind
him.
< CHECKPOINT >
Go thru the hole in the gate. Run all the way across the balcony and stealth
kill the soldier at the end. Make a right and shoot the explosives downstairs to
kill 2 enemies. Destroy the box to your left and enter the door. Inside, duck
behind the machinery directly in front of you. Wait for a guard to appear to
your left. Kill him first. Roll to the crate on the right and kill the 2nd
guard. From here, shoot the explosives, killing a 3rd. Proceed and shoot the 4th
in the back. Enter the next room. Duck behind the low counters to your LEFT and
kill the 2 enemies. Crouch behind the 1st DARK box to your RIGHT and, while
crouching, shoot the nearest enemy thru the cabinets. Kill the other 2. Exit and
use the next door for a cutscene.
Enter the door. Approach the fence, but kill the guard on the other side before
using the door. Enter the room to your left. Here, carefully dispatch the 2
white guards WITHOUT HITTING THE EXPLOSIVES. You'll trigger a toxic gas leak if
you do. Snipe a 3rd with a headshot. Roll under the laser and grab the Medkit to
your left. Exit the room and swiftly take cover behind a wall outcropping to
your right. Kill the 2 enemies. Turn around, run to the ladder and use it,
ignoring the last enemy.
<> 5-9.) STAGE 9 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
It is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you take as little damage as possible. There is
a BOSS at the end of this stage. Anyway, peek around the corner and kill the 3
guards. Quickly go thru the door, ignoring the guard that spawns on the roof.
Enter the next door for a convo w/ Thomas.
The previously closed shutter has lifted. Enter the next room and shoot the
enemy in the back. When you press the switch beside the electrified door, the
shutters to your right will open. Crouch below the opening, just right of the
door, and headshot all 3 from here. Enter the next room and take out the 2
guards. Ascend the ramp and shoot the control panel, which is near the room
entrance. Exit back out into the hallway. Peek around the corner and kill the
guards from here, if you can. If they're too far, roll to a box. Proceed and
RELOAD before entering the next door.
!!! BOSS: LEON !!!
Dispatch the mook to your left first: he's practically running at you in a
straight line. Then, crouch and wait for the other guard to flank you. Shoot him
as he stops behind you. The boxes you're behind are DESTRUCTIBLE, so be quick.
The left box does contain a Medkit, tho, if you're struggling. Leon, himself, is
very similar to Lila. Pop out, shoot him once, then duck. He gets lots of
invincibility frames and his shotgun does BIG damage, so be patient. Plenty of
boxes to hide behind, tho. Not a hard fight.
<> 5-10.) STAGE 10 <> TARGET TIME: <3:00
Exit the room and work your way back to where Thomas was. Only 2 guards and some
crates stand in your way. Watch the cutscene. Grab the C4 on the middle console,
then shoot the explosive crate. Go thru the hole and climb the ladder.
On the roof, immediately run between the large machines. You'll alert 2 guards
who will flee, allowing you to shoot them from behind. Turn into the last alcove
on the RIGHT and kill the guard that drops from the roof. Peek into the center
and kill the last guard. Before you hit the wall switch, be aware that this part
is TIMED. If you fail to reach the next door in time, you'll have to return here
and hit this switch again. Reload your ammo and brace yourself.
Hit the switch. Swiftly roll under the nearby laser. Ignore the guards on the
roof and roll under the next laser. Stand close to the wall (so the enemies
above can't hit you) and kill the guards across the next laser before rolling
under it. Roll under the last laser and, hopefully, go thru the door. In here,
follow the wall and shoot the 2 enemies as they approach. Go thru the door and
down the ladder to complete the stage.
<> 5-11.) STAGE 11 <> TARGET TIME: <5:30
Another short one. Kill the enemy directly ahead of you, then 2 more around the
corner of the building. Get past the crate and man the sentry gun. Obliterate
the 4 guards ahead. As you cross the bridge, a soldier will appear on the roof.
Off him, then cross the crates and enter the door, ignoring any other enemies.
Back here again, for the fifth time. Loop around and kill the guard. Go thru the
door and stealth kill the next guard. Enter the lower door.
Duck thru the hole in the gate and cling to the 1st wall in front of you. Kill
the 2 guards in the lobby area. Snipe the far one--it's not hard. Run along the
perimeter of the room, weaving between cover. Kill the guard in front of the far
door and enter. Deactivate the laser and round the corner, ducking behind the
1st dark box you see. Dispatch the 3 enemies. Peek around the next corner and
dispatch another enemy on the stairs. Go down and enter the door. The enemies in
this next area are pretty deadly, so beware.
Immediately turn to your left and shoot the light crate. Reload, step forward,
and kill the guard that enters. Go thru the right door, then the left door.
Ignore the fleeing guard and peek around the corner to kill 2 others. Shoot the
control panel high on the right-hand wall, then go back the way you came. Kill
the guard across the fence and reenter the room. Hug the machinery to your left
and kill another. Pass the timed laser when it's inactive and hug the BLUE
CABINET to your left. Kill 2 more guards. You will have to shoot the control box
for this laser, which is slightly around the corner. If you stand against the
left wall and use your camera precisely, you won't risk touching it. There are
two more guards around the corner and one lying in wait behind the cabinet just
before the exit. Dispatch them, reload and enter the door.
<> 5-12.) STAGE 12 <> TARGET TIME: <1:30
!!! BOSS: RYAN !!!
Despite his tough talk, this isn't a hard fight. If you cling to the pillar
you're beside, you're pretty much untouchable. The only way you could get hurt
here is if you get beaned with a grenade while peeking out or shot. As always:
patience is key. Peek out, shoot, hide.
<> 5-13.) STAGE 13 <> TARGET TIME: <8:00
This next part gets a little tough. Luckily, this is the last time we'll have to
backtrack thru this godforsaken office. Take the other door beside you. Crouch
behind the crate and wait a few seconds for a guard to appear. Once he turns
around, stealth kill him, then snap to your RIGHT and shoot another guard in the
back. Hit the switch, use the ladder, and roll thru the sewage tunnel, ignoring
the other enemies. Reload, then take a few steps forward. 3 guards will enter
from the right ledge and they are DEADLY, so kill them as they're entering.
You now have 2 options: crouch walk behind the crates as they advance down the
canal or pick off the enemies from a distance. Neither is easy and you'll
probably take some punishment. At the end, the right crate will break off from
the rest. Pass thru and crouch-walk/roll into the next area.
Immediately shoot the guard to your right in the back. Reload, then advance a
bit and shoot another. Ascend the ladder, hit the switch, break the crate and
RELOAD before ascending the next ladder. Once you're up, immediately begin
shooting the two guards in front of you. DO NOT MOVE. Keep your aim up even
after they're dead and it should auto-snap to an enemy hidden to your left. If
not, turn your camera a bit and try targeting him. Kill him, then shoot the
control box to your right. Go thru the door and stand behind the wall to your
right. Kill the 3, visible enemies from here. A 4th enemy is behind the last
wall. Grab the Medkit behind him then go thru the upper door.
< CHECKPOINT >
Go thru the hole in the grate. Shoot the explosive crate as the enemy attempts
to push it, then snipe the other enemy. As you cross the balcony, shoot the
explosives below to eliminate one of the guards. You can use the dark box as
cover to eliminate the others. Clear the box in your path. Run quickly around
the corner and crouch-roll behind the boxes. Blast the guards point-blank. Get
past the boxes, reload and enter the door.
Shoot the near guard to your left, then the shotty guard to your right. The next
enemy is around the corner, so use the wall. Proceed. Crouch behind the counters
to your left and shoot the guard that attempts to flank your right side. From
here, you can eliminate the guard just behind the cabinets if you remain
crouched. Kill the shotgun guard, then crouch behind the cabinets and shoot the
last guard thru the gap. There's a Medkit in the far-right corner of the room.
Proceed thru the doors until you see the electric fence. Take cover behind the
box and mow down the enemies as they appear. Approach the gate around the corner
for a cutscene.
After the scene, quickly hug the outcropping to your right. These enemies shoot
FAST, so only go for 2 shots at a time. Target the leftmost enemy first as he's
got a good angle on you. After they're done, turn around and go thru the large
door at the end of the hall. Go around the corner and use the box to kill 3,
last enemies. The stage ends beyond the door.
///////////////////////////// AREA 3: FACTORY AREA /////////////////////////////
<> 5-14.) STAGE 14 <> TARGET TIME: <8:00
Finally, a much needed, albeit mild, change of scenery. The game is getting a
little harder, too. Enemies will take cover further away and potshot you,
forcing you to advance if you wanna use your auto-aim. Get used to it.
Go forward and take cover behind the near box. Kill the first 2 guards. Make a
right and duck behind one of the boxes. Kill 2 more guards on the bridge.
Continue and take cover behind the LEFT side of the wide, orange crate. Dispatch
the 3 guards. Proceed toward an alley lined with blue containers. An enemy is
hiding behind the 1st. Use the cover however you like to dispatch 3 more guards:
2 on the ground and 1 on the bridge. Grab the Medkit, if you need it, and go up
the stairs, thru the door. Take the door at the end of the hall, kill the guard
and shoot the red light across the pool. Exit the way you came.
At the bottom of the stairs, kill the guard directly ahead of you. Use the 2nd,
blue container as cover to kill the guards in the clearing. Enter the building.
You can headshot the 2 guards in here without alerting them. Use the console
they were protecting. Kill the enemies that enter and shoot the laser control
panel. Now, we have to backtrack to the other side of the pool.
A single enemy is outside the door. Go past the blue containers, again, and roll
behind the 1st box you see. Take out the 2 guards. Nothing should stand between
you and the key now. Grab it, then take the other door in the hall. Take the
Flashlight on the table and proceed. Immediately aim down the stairs and
dispatch the enemies below. After descending the stairs, roll to the 1st, dark
box you see. Kill 2 soldiers. Another is just around the corner. Use the barrel
(not the moving box) as cover to kill 2 more. Another appears as you go down the
waterway. There are 3 more around the corner. Crouch-walk behind the moving
crate to dispatch them. Take the ladder. Reload, then quickly roll to the 1st,
small crate around the corner. Shoot the nearest guard in the back and take out
the others. Enter the door to end the stage.
<> 5-15.) STAGE 15 <> TARGET TIME: <2:30
A very, VERY short stage--if you're willing to take risks.
From your exact position, shoot the explosive crate in the direction Jean Luc is
facing. That will clear the room and only take off half your health. Run to the
door at the other side of the room.
< CHECKPOINT >
Ignore all the enemies and go left, then forward toward the blue container.
You'll want to get the key shown in the cutscene. The sentry gun can't hit you
behind the containers due to its low profile, so move between them and use them
as cover to dispatch the guards. Go in AS STRAIGHT A LINE AS POSSIBLE toward the
next container or you will DIE. As you approach the last container, the sentry
gunner will step out to attack you. Kill him. You'll be interrupted by a
cutscene as you try to grab the key. Man the sentry gun and demolish all the
enemies. Don't forget to TAKE THE KEY and reload before entering the door the
enemies emerged from. Stage over lmao.
<> 5-16.) STAGE 16 <> TARGET TIME: <1:30
!!! BOSS: SERGEANT THUNDER !!!
This fight sucks lol. You will really struggle with camera and targeting here
due to Jean Luc's propensity to aim where HE'S looking and not where YOU'RE
looking. Come on, Jean.
As the fight begins, raise your gun. You can't see him (because you're facing
backwards, ugh), but there is a guard in a trolley above you. Kill him. Circle
the large, central machine and kill another guard in a trolley. Now it's just
you and Thunder. Crouch behind the conveyor belts near the walls and take him
out from there. Be patient and remember to Reload. He gets lots of i-frames and
his attack lasts a while.
<> 5-17.) STAGE 17 <> TARGET TIME: <7:00
Stay close to the building and kill the 1st guard. Enter the door ahead and use
the console. Exit and kill another guard, then go to the right, ignoring the
guard on the roof. Take cover behind the 1st, dark box and shoot the nearby
explosives. That should get rid of 1 enemy. Shoot the other, then run thru the
gap left behind by the explosives. Kill the enemy directly ahead of you. Around
the corner is an enemy and a crate with a Medkit, if you want it. If not, go up
the ladder.
Shoot the near guard in the back. The other will be running away. Shoot him from
a distance. Advance and kill the enemies on the opposite roof. Loop around the
rooftop and shoot the laser control. Loop back around and handle the 4 guards
however you see fit. There's plenty of indestructible cover up here. When you're
done, cross the bridge. For fun, you can shoot the explosive crate below and
dispatch 2 guards. Either way, go thru the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
Hit the switch to the left. You'll have to ride this trolley thing, ducking
beneath lasers as you go. Might as well kill the guards below for points: you're
in it for the long haul anyway. When you hop out, run to the other trolley but
DON'T HIT THE SWITCH. Get as close to the ledge as possible and snipe the 2
laser controls across the way. This will save you some trouble. Board the
trolley and, once more, kill everything. The guard in the opposite trolley is
too far to target so you'll have to kill him manually.
After that's over, shoot the explosive crate and the control box in front of
you. An enemy is around the corner, so take him out before entering the fenced
area. There is a KEY on the LEFT-SIDE BOX. Grab it. Kill the enemy in front of
the trolley and board again. As usual, kill everything and avoid lasers.
Before you use the door, RELOAD. This next part will require quick execution.
Run STRAIGHT ACROSS the bridge, ignoring the enemies, then quickly destroy the
box in your path. Enter the door to end the stage. If you do this slowly, you're
a sitting duck on the bridge.
<> 5-18.) STAGE 18 <> TARGET TIME: <9:00
This level is long, winding and annoying. Conveyor belt levels in games tend to
be. You'll be passing thru this room over...and over...and over.
As you start, stay close to the left wall. It'll give you an angle on the enemy
above. Climb up the blue ladder--these will be your main method of navigating
the area. I'm only pointing this out because they're hard to see. Anyway, at the
top, move quickly to the 2nd, dark box in the center. Kill the 2 guards. Descend
another blue ladder at the end of the central conveyor belt.
Take cover behind the box and kill the 3 guards, then descend another ladder to
your left. Step to the LEFT of the dark box (so the enemy above can't hit you),
then forward a bit. Kill the enemy directly to your left. There are two dark
boxes ahead. Quickly advance to the RIGHT side of the RIGHT-HAND box and crouch
there. Kill the enemy that runs past you, then the other 2. Advance, hit the
white control panel, and go up the ladder.
Crouch behind the box and kill the 2 guards, then go down the stairs to your
left. Crouch behind the 1st, blue crate on the left and dispatch the enemy to
your upper-right. Now, the one below him. Finally, the one straight ahead.
Ignore the one above you as he can't hit you. Round the corner for a cutscene,
then go up the ladder. Use the console, then immediately CROUCH behind it to
avoid being spotted. The explosives on the belt will drop, killing 2 guards.
There is another guard behind the blue containers, and another around the final
corner. Get rid of them and go down the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
A guard is stationed just past the blue crate. Kill him. Duck next to the
conveyor belt to your left and kill 2 more, then go up the ladder. Make a right
and hit the control panel, then use the turret to kill the approaching guards.
Go in the direction the gun is aimed and enemies will spawn behind you. Despawn
them by climbing the ladder in the corner, then go back down. Hit the console at
the end of the walkway. Now, head back toward the gun and kill the single guard.
Navigate toward the center of the room via the conveyor belts. Along the way,
you'll be attacked by 2 guards. Use the nearby, dark box as cover. Ascend the
ladder behind you.
Make a left and go across the conveyor. If you've been following the FAQ, you
solved a puzzle here without realizing it. Anyway, go down the next ladder. Take
a few steps along the belt until you see a guard come up the stairs. Retreat to
the orange container by the ladder and take him out, then take out the guard
ahead. There's Medkit at the end of the belt, if you want it. Either way, go up
the ladder.
Take cover behind the 1st, blue crate. Stay as far LEFT as possible to avoid
getting sniped by a hard-to-see enemy above. He can shoot thru the floor, for
whatever reason. Kill the 2 lower enemies, then advance to the next crate to
kill the one up top. Use the box around the corner to kill 2 more. 2 more guards
are around the next corner. For style points, use the explosives to kill the
upper enemy. Go up the ladder.
Kill the 2 guards. You don't even need to use the box. Just shoot, move, shoot.
Go down the ladder and shoot the panel. Now we BACKTRACK (ugh). Go up, across
the belt, then down again. This segment is clear save for 2 guards around the
final corner. Roll to the blue crate they're standing behind as the corner has a
finicky hitbox. Go back down into the factory. Remember that ladder in the
corner we used to despawn guards? That's where we're headed. The path is clear
up to that point. Once you're up the ladder, dispatch the guards around each
corner and use the door to end the stage. Finally.
<> 5-19.) STAGE 19 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
This is a short stage: a much needed relief after the previous one. Run across
the bridge, ignoring the enemies below. Stealth kill the first 2 guards you
encounter, then take cover behind the nearby box. Kill the 2 guards. There are 2
more just inside the fenced area. Cling to the wall, then stun the nearest one
by shooting him once. Shoot the explosive barrel to his left as he recoils.
Boom--area clear. Run to the right and shoot the 2 enemies as they attempt to
enter the area, then go thru the opening. Cling to the wall to your right and
kill the 2 guards. Don't go in that direction, tho: it's literally where you
began. Instead, RELOAD, then go in the opposite direction. Kill the next 2
enemies as they appear on the ledge ahead. They can hit you, even if you duck
behind the dark box, so it's better to preempt them. I learned this the hard way
aka. a shotgun shell to the head. Reload, then go around the corner and blast
the enemies as they enter. If you don't manage to kill both, roll to the
left-side barrel. Go down the ladder, grab the Medkit, if you want, then go up
the next ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Stealth kill the 1st guard. Advance and another guard will run in your
direction. Shoot him. Hit the explosives on the ledge to kill a third. Step just
past the doorway ahead, then turn left. Snipe the guard from a distance. It's
good headshot practice. Reload, then run around the RIGHT side of the center
structure. Kill the 2 enemies as they approach. Reload again, then take a few
steps forward to summon 2 more enemies. Kill 'em. Destroy the box to your right
and head to the left, down the ladder, to end the stage.
<> 5-20.) STAGE 20 <> TARGET TIME: <6:00
This is a short, but difficult stage. Start by running forward and aggressively
killing the first 2 enemies. Go down the stairs and stealth kill the next guard
to your right. Go up the nearby ladder. Step forward a bit and shoot the two
guards ahead, then the one below you to the right. As you advance, another guard
will be across the containers to your right. Kill him. Skip the 1st right turn
unless you need Medkit. Kill 2 more guards to your right and take the 2nd right
turn. There will be a guard below, to your left. Kill him, RELOAD, then approach
the building. You'll have to hit the sniper manually as your angle is bad.
Target him, then tap the Analog Stick UP slightly to get a clear shot.
We have to backtrack to the other side of the containers now. As you turn back,
kill the enemy to your left. After the left turn, look straight ahead and shoot
the enemy in the distance. 2 more guards will appear on the scaffolding as you
advance. Dispatch them, then make a left, go down the ladder, up the stairs and
into the building. Hit the console and exit.
< CHECKPOINT >
This is where it gets tough. Go down the stairs and advance a bit. Try to kill
all 3 enemies using the explosive crate. As you saw, the blue containers are now
moving up and down. You'll have to pass under them. Cling to the wall RIGHT of
the 1st container and kill the enemies around the corner. I recommend going
low-to-high. Run in and stand behind the LEFT box. Kill the guard that passes in
front of you, then the one to your upper left. Use the box as cover, if needed.
Shoot the explosive crate just past the blue container, then reload.
When the container is up, quickly run and roll to the boxes to your right. Use
them as cover to kill the enemies. Be VERY judicious as an accidental headshot
from these mooks can mean instant death. Stay CLOSE to the orange containers and
approach the blue container to your right. This will spawn a guard in the next
area that will run past the container and have his back turned to you. Pop in
toward the left, one-shot him, then pop back out. Go to the left, blue container
now. Reload, then turn the corner to your left and kill the guard.
This final stretch is easily the most dangerous. DON'T go around the corner.
Instead stop at the end of the containers. This will spawn a guard up top. Run
back and kill him. Now, quickly round the corner and roll to the nearest box.
Kill the guards, starting with the one on the left. It's imperative that you
don't trigger them before attempting this or you'll definitely get shot before
reaching the box. Go thru the door to end the stage.
<> 5-21.) STAGE 21 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
Once again, it's imperative that you don't take damage in the beginning of this
level as there is a Boss halfway thru.
Run around the 1st corner and aggressively shoot both enemies. One of them
should be facing away from you and will go down in one hit. Move forward again
and kill the next enemy as he approaches. Swiftly roll to the container in the
center of the next area, then shoot the explosive barrels directly ahead of you.
Reload, then step forward slightly. Kill the enemies that appear on the roof.
The one on the right goes down in one shot. Pop around the next corner and shoot
the explosive crate. Reload, then swiftly run up to the wall behind the next
enemy and kill them up-close. The snipers above can't hit you here. Hurry to the
next corner and cling to the wall. Take out the 2 guards: right, then left. Run
to the Medkit, if you need it, reload, then enter the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
!!! BOSS: DUKE !!! (is this a Duke Nukem reference?)
Duke is laughable. He can barely handle the giant gatling gun he's wielding and
will have trouble hitting you if you run side-to-side. You'll have to get closer
to target him, so run between the crates to your left. Pop him with a shot as
soon as you can and target him with C-Down. The rest of the fight follows a
specific rhythm. Pause a half-second, then run sideways. Don't run immediately
or Duke will lead his shot. Once he stops firing, wait a half second, then pop
him again. Repeat. If you need to reload, do it WHILE running, never while
standing still. Once his health is low, Duke will start tiptoeing around after
he fires. Wait until he stops moving, then shoot.
< CHECKPOINT >
Turn to your left and go thru the gap. Stealth kill the 1st guard. This next
part is a long, fast series of events, so reload. When you're ready, dash down
the center, then quickly turn right and roll into the crates just in front of
the enemy. Kill him. Advance to the opening in the containers and shoot the
guard in camo in the back. Pursue the other guards around the RIGHT side of the
fenced area and shoot them in the back, if you can. If you can't, hug the blue
container against the building and kill them from there. There is one, last
guard just around the corner, in front of the exit door.
<> 5-22.) STAGE 22 <> TARGET TIME: <9:00
Pursue the fleeing guard down the stairs and shoot him in the back. Run + roll
to the light crate on the right side of the tunnel. Kill the 2 guards. Drop a C4
near the wall of crates and detonate it. Once the path is clear, STOP. A laser
will pass by the right side of the tunnel and will KILL YOU if you step too far
forward. What a cheap trick. Once the laser passes, duck behind the dark box on
your right and kill the 2 guards. You'll have to crouch-walk under the lasers to
proceed. Obviously, the higher side is preferable. Beware: there is a shotgun
guard at the end of the passage. Kill him, grab the Medkit behind him, if you
need it, then proceed for a cutscene. Go up the ladder.
Stand behind the 1st crate on the RIGHT and kill the 2 advancing guards. As you
near the corner, another will appear. Kill him. Before you advance, go back to
the ladder and turn to your right. Crouch and shoot the explosive crate. This
will save you time later. Proceed and kill the last guard around the corner.
Descend the ladder. Make a left and duck behind the 2nd, dark box. From here,
kill the 2 guards. Another one will appear across the way. Kill him, then
destroy the crate and go down the ramp. You'll have to weave between the crates
while advancing up the canal. Don't worry about killing the enemies--they'll
retreat as soon as you reach the other end. If you took a beating, go straight
at the top of the ramp for Medkit. In the other direction are the 3 guards, now
holed up around the corner. Duck behind the dark box and kill them from here.
They fire FAST, so be patient. Go up the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Kill the guard immediately as the cutscene ends. Take a few steps to the right,
then wait for the guards to get into position. Shoot the explosive crate on the
left ledge to kill all 3. When you advance, a bunch of enemies will appear from
the area ahead. Retreat to a wall to the right and kill them. Past the fence,
immediately take cover behind the blue container to your right. Dispatch the
rooftop enemies. Hug the near wall of the building and kill the enemy around the
corner. Go around the bend and kill 2 more guards. There's a Medkit at the very
end of the train yard if you're hurting. Go up the ladder to proceed.
Dispatch the 3 guards up here any way you see fit. The ones below CAN and WILL
hit you, so don't skip them. Snipe the control panel thru the window, then turn
back. Kill 2 more guards and descend the ladder. Now we'll have to backtrack to
the electric fence. Go back around the bend and inch forward until you see 2
enemies on rooftops. Snipe them. Inch forward more until you see another. Snipe
him, too. 2 guards will attack you in the area with barrels. Use the two BROWN
barrels as cover. The RED ONE IS EXPLOSIVE. Another guard will pop out from the
left as you approach the fence. Kill him. Go thru the fence, then the door to
end the stage.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIMER CHECK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first point in the game that your playtime will be checked. If
you've gotten here in under 3 hours, congratulations, you just avoided the Bad
Ending on both the N64 and PS2 version. If you JUUUST missed the mark, consider
retrying the previous stage. If you're nowhere near close, well...say goodbye to
some side characters and an American landmark lol. On the N64, you'll be locked
into the Bad Ending. On PS2, you still have a shot at Normal.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
<> 5-23.) STAGE 23 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
Run to the left side of the 1st container and wait for the guard to turn around,
then stealth kill him. You'll see a guy running atop the wall to your right.
Kill him before proceeding. Dispatch one more guard past the last container and
go up the ladder to the right. Run straight across the wall. The guy up here
would have given you trouble. Go down the ladder at the end. The next two
segments are more of the same: just run across each clearing.
For an easy time dispatching the guards in the building, run to the blue
container to the RIGHT of the opening. For whatever reason, they can't hit you
here. Headshot the 3 you can see, then use the pillar ahead as cover to kill the
last. Go past the boxes and thru the door to the right. Grab the Medkit in here,
if necessary, then proceed thru the next door. Use the 1st pillar as cover to
dispatch the 2 guards. Use the pillar past the explosive crate to dispatch 2
more. Reload, then get to the bottom of the ramp for some cutscenes.
< CHECKPOINT >
!!! BOSS: GUNT !!!
Okay, so this fight is easier than it looks, but the margin of error is slim.
Despite the LARGE amount of ordinance Gunt (what a name) can fire, most of it
will harmlessly whiz past you if you just step to the side. In other words, it's
Duke, the sequel, but even easier.
Immediately pop him and lock-on to him with C-Down while he's stunned. Before he
fires a volley, Gunt will hop and face you, then crouch slightly. As soon as you
see a rocket leave his rocket launcher, run left. The rockets should fly past
you. The moment they've passed you, aim and shoot. Repeat this procedure,
alternating between running left and right. Just avoid getting too close to the
explosives or walls as the rockets have large and damaging splash. Go thru the
large door to end the stage.
//////////////////////////// AREA 4: CONTROL CENTER ////////////////////////////
<> 5-24.) STAGE 24 <> TARGET TIME: <5:00
The hardest part of the level is right in the beginning. You'll want to sidle
along the box, avoiding detection. DO NOT CROUCH; stay standing. The easiest
method is to tap RIGHT on your controller instead of holding it. When the two
boxes collide, ROLL forward/right, then quickly re-hug the next crate and
continue. At the very end, crouch behind the boxes and wait for the guard to
relax. Roll thru the door as far LEFT as possible. It should close behind you.
Look to your right and aim at the explosives. Shoot them when a guard stops
behind them. Roll to the RIGHT side of the nearby box and kill another guard to
your left. Circle around the handrail. When you reach an opening, 2 guards will
come thru the door. Kill them, then go thru the door.
Run straight forward and shoot the enemy on the ramp. Take the door at the top.
Sprint to the far box and kill the guard that stops across from you. Then,
sprint/roll to the next box to approach and kill the next. As you go toward the
door, two guards will appear below. Shoot the barrel to kill both.
< CHECKPOINT >
Grab the Medkit directly to your right, if you need it, then hit the center
console. You'll see the bridge move left across the window. Cross it when it
lines up with the doorway. There are two, oblivious enemies to your right.
Crouch-walk to the boxes behind them and headshot one, then kill the other.
Shoot the control panel. Return to the console room and take the door you didn't
come thru earlier. Quickly shoot the guard below you in the back, then turn to
your left and shoot another. Go thru the door in the distance.
Make a left and kill the enemy that emerges. Crouch-walk forward. An enemy will
spawn further down the hall. Kill him. Reload, then enter the door and shoot
both mooks in the back. Another guard will pop out as you approach the door.
Proceed. When you see a light box, be aware that there is a guard around the
RIGHT corner. Another is around the next. Exit the stage thru the door.
<> 5-25.) STAGE 25 <> TARGET TIME: <18:30
This is the 2nd longest level in the game so prepare to be here for a while.
Step slightly past the 1st box, then shoot the guard to your upper right. Step
further forward and kill the next guard once he's in position. Go up the ladder.
Stand behind the 1st box and kill the enemies that come thru the door. Crouch
and look to your right. A shotgun guard will position himself there. Kill him.
From the same spot, take out the enemy on the scaffold ahead. Go forward and up
the ladder. Run straight, down the next ladder and thru the door. Look to your
right and shoot the guard, reload then go thru the smaller door.
This next part is a bit tricky. Run forward and stay close to the RIGHT wall,
past the outcroppings. Shoot the ski mask guard once and he will retreat to the
left. If you're against the right wall, almost near the corner, you should have
an angle on him. Kill him. Now hug the wall and peek around to kill the camo
guard. Follow the left fork and shoot the guard that rounds the corner. After
the small cutscene, run across the doorway to the other outcropping, face the
way you came and kill the assassin. These guys stab you for like...80% of your
health. Roll to the box in front of the enemy and kill him. Take the 1st door.
This is just an ol' fashioned shootout so do what you must. Shoot out the second
window to the right, then destroy the laser panel in the adjacent room. Go back
out into the hallway, take the other door and ascend the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Grab the Medkit, if you need it, then continue. READ this next part BEFORE you
attempt it. Press the switch on the wall and follow the crates. After the first
crate drops, keep your eyes above you for a guard on a ledge. Shoot him. Stay to
the RIGHT of the corridor. Eventually, there will be a little gap between the
dark crate and the wall. Move into the gap. Now, hug the light crate to your
left and take out the visible enemy. 2 more are around the corner. Kill them and
take the ladder up.
Run to the box and kill the 2 guards. Now, run in the opposite direction to
spawn 2 more. RUN BACK. We only spawned these guys to despawn them later lol.
Destroy the box and follow the belt to a ladder. Once again, READ before
attempting. Reload, press the switch and follow the crates. A guard will crawl
under the left crate. Shoot him. When you see a light crate on the right side of
the hall, step behind it. Use it as cover to kill the 2 guards ahead. Make a
left and press the switch. Now, go back the way you came and shoot the explosive
barrel. Reload. Stand so that you can aim diagonally between the crates and the
wall. Kill the guards, then go thru and up the ladder again.
Go the opposite way this time. Those dumb bastards we spawned earlier are gone
forever. Run up to the box and kill the enemy. Destroy the box and take the
Medkit, if needed, then go down. Now, this is a dirty trap. Turn the camera in
the direction Jean Luc is facing. Destroy the box, then hit the switch. Now,
stand where the box was and let the crates pass. RELOAD. There's an ambush up
ahead. Take cover behind the 1st crate on the right. Peek around and kill 2
guards. There's another behind the crate, so reload, move forward and kill him.
Hit the switch and go thru the door.
Duck behind the barrier on the left, directly across from the camo guard, and
kill the enemies. I recommend killing the one up top first. If you need Medkit,
there's one right behind this barrier. Run toward the lasers up ahead and stop
just before the alley on the left. Turn to your right and kill the guard.
There's a turret in that little alcove, so READ this before attempting. You see
the crates to your right? There's a little divot in them. Run straight to the
far lip of the divot. Turn around and kill the guard above, then shoot the
control panel. Run back and into the now-open area to the left of the big pipe.
Run to the light crate and kill the guard. Now, either peek around the corner or
roll to the next box and kill 2 more. Hit the switch.
There are a bunch of guards down the way, so let the crates drop along the hall
before you advance. Kill the 3 guards and try not to shoot the explosive barrels
behind them. At the end of the hall, go right into the little alcove with the
switch. If the barrels survived, hit the switch for some fun carnage. If not,
use the crate as cover to kill the enemies, then destroy the box in your path.
There's a laser control panel you need to shoot just around the right corner. Do
so, then head back the way you came. Take cover behind the 1st crate in the long
corridor. Peek around and kill the 2 enemies in your line of fire, then reload
and kill the enemy behind the crate. Proceed.
As you approach the large pipe again, pause and shoot the guard that stops in
front of you. Turn to your right and shoot the other as he approaches. Run
across the turret alley again and hit the switch. Let the machinery take the
turret out for you. Reload, then kill the guard down the alley, to the left. Go
thru the door, grab the Medkit and descend the ladder.
< CHECKPOINT >
Can this godforsaken level just end already? This 1st room is a straight-up
gunfight; do what you do best. Go thru the door and head left. Cling to the wall
and dispatch the guards. Ignore the doorway they came thru and go the other way.
Reload, then enter the small door. The enemies in here shoot slowly and will,
instead, try to stab you. Move away from them and gun them down. The crates
contain Medkit and C4, if you want 'em. Reload, then go thru the small door. Get
close to the wall directly in front of you. Kill the enemies around corner. Duck
behind the 2nd crate down the hall and kill 2 more.
Go to the door on the right if you need Medkit. If not, go to the left. Use the
1st, L-shaped machine to your right to kill the nearer 2 guards. Roll to the 2nd
one to kill the rest. Reload, then go thru the large door ahead. Use the crate
to your right to kill the 2 guards, then ascend the ladder. Press the switch.
There are 2 guards around the corner to your left. Kill the nearer one, then
reload. You'll want to kill the other in 1 go or he'll retreat and make your
life difficult. Cling to the wall on the right and kill another guard around the
corner. Proceed in the direction that guard was facing, then cling to the RIGHT
wall, again. Reload, then kill the 3 guards around the corner. I recommend
killing the one in black, the one above, then the one behind the crate. There
are 2 MORE guards around the next corner. Press the switch. Go left, then run
forward. When enemies appear, make a right and use the wall as cover to kill
them. The door to the left has a Medkit, the door to the right leads onward.
Use the conveyor belt as cover to dispatch the enemies, then approach the
switch. When you're on the other side of the belt, 2 more enemies will enter
thru the door you came thru. Use the belt as cover again and kill them. Hit the
switch, then crouch and aim in the direction of the crates being moved. Hold "R"
and shoot the enemy as soon as possible. Go thru the door. Kill the enemy to
your left, then hit the switch to the right. Follow the crates and descend the
ladder on your right. Kill the enemies in here, then take the 1st door to your
right. Use the console, then exit and use the 2nd door. Ignore the guards in
here and run LEFT to the next door. Make 2 more lefts and go thru the small door
to finally end this nightmare of a stage. Ugh.
<> 5-26.) STAGE 26 <> TARGET TIME: <2:00
!!! BOSS: BANDERAS !!!
This fight seems impossible unless you know what to do. For starters, run
STRAIGHT forward as the fight starts. This will detonate all the explosives in
the room you're currently in without hurting you and cause Banderas to retreat
to another room. Shoot the explosive barrel to your LEFT. This will deactivate
the laser in the next room. This diagram will explain what to do from here.
_____________
| o | | If you've done all that I said above, Banderas will have
| o B | retreated to the spot marked "B". Hug the wall marked "1"
|__ _1|______| just outside of the room he's in, next to the barrel, and
| 2 | peek in and shoot him. If you hear someone shout "over
| | there!" that means guards are entering from "X" and will
|__X___| position themselves at the "o"s. Hug the wall marked "2" and
kill them from there, then return to "1" and continue shoot-
ing Banderas. When he's low on health, he'll run around between shots. Just stay
covered and make sure he doesn't get a good angle on you. He'll go down easy.
<> 5-27.) STAGE 27 <> TARGET TIME: <8:00
This is another decently long stage but, because we're super tactical super
soldiers, we're gonna take a shortcut. Firstly, kill the 2 guards that enter.
Once they're out of the way, reload and open the door behind them. Hold R as the
door opens and, as soon as you see enemies, tap the Analog Stick RIGHT and fire
a few times. You should hit the dark green guard. Kill him. Once he's dead, hug
the right wall and dispatch the guards in the doorway. If that guy had survived,
he would have closed this door. By killing him, we spared ourselves much
backtracking. If you fail, I recommend trying again; we're at the very beginning
of the level anyway. Go down the hall and thru the door, then down the ladder.
Use the 1st box to kill the enemies to your upper left, then the one ahead of
you. Go through the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
There are 2 guards around the corner to your right. Go the only way you can and
into the door marked "LOCKERS". Crouch roll under these lasers. In the hall,
crouch beside the boxes on your RIGHT and shoot the enemy to your LEFT in the
back. Turn around and kill the enemy behind you. Proceed down the hall and thru
the door. The explosives below will make quick work of the guards. Stealth kill
both guards in the control room. Hit the center panel and cross the bridge when
it gets to the left. After the cutscene, shoot the right-hand explosive crate to
kill the guards below, then go RIGHT, back into the control room and shoot the
fleeing guard in the back. Hit the center panel and go across the bridge again.
Go thru the door at the end, then the door directly behind it. Destroy the
control box behind the crate.
Exit. Now, you'll have to navigate the boxes while avoiding the lasers. There
are 2 guards in the way, too. Shoot the 1st from where you're standing. You'll
have to improvise a bit for the 2nd. Make a left and go back into the Lockers.
Immediately shoot the enemy ahead. Roll under the first laser. Another enemy
will appear. Roll under the next and 2 more will appear. Use the cover on the
sides to kill them. Finish crossing the lasers and exit. You need to go left at
the fork, but there's a guard in your way. Kill him, grab the Medkit and open
the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIMER CHECK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the second point in the game where your playtime is checked. Things get
a little muddled between ports here. If you've opened this door in under 5 hours
and also made it to Stage 23 under 3 hours, congratulations: you're locked into
the Good Ending on both versions! If you already failed the first Timer Check,
you're locked into the Bad Ending on N64, but can still get the Normal Ending on
PS2 by passing this one. If you failed both...well, GG. Try taking the shortcut
I described above if you're off by just a few minutes. Either way, READ AHEAD
before descending the ramp.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!! BOSS: ??? (JIN) !!!
This boss will not appear if you're en route to the Bad Ending on either version
(yay, I guess?) Just descend the ramp, go across the room, cry at the cutscene
and read the last 4 sentences of the section below.
If you're headed for Good OR Normal Endings, reload, go to the bottom of the
ramp and attempt to cross the room. You'll be interrupted by a cutscene. SKIP
THIS CUTSCENE. Skipping it puts the boss in a favorable position and he'll run
right into your sights as the fight begins.
Despite being a ninja of some sort, this guy is awful at melee combat. In fact,
you'll WANT him to melee you as it does barely any damage and keeps him still.
Shoot him, then run into him, forcing him to push you back. Keep running into
him and shoot when he stops blinking. You'll most likely get a headshot. Don't
let him get away from you as his long-range attacks are DEADLY. Once he's dealt
with, go thru the far door (not the one near the ramp). There is one guard
around the corner. Kill him and enter the room for a cutscene. Stage over.
<> 5-28.) STAGE 28 <> TARGET TIME: <11:00
Exit the room. Run down the hall, around the corner and kill the guard. In the
generator room, go along the right wall to kill the first 2 enemies (one high,
one low) then shoot the enemy on the far generator. Up on the walkway, you'll
confront 2 more enemies. Go thru the door at the end of the walkway. Shoot the
running guards in the back, if you can. If not, they'll station around the
corner. Kill them and go thru the "EXIT" door.
We're headed back to the elevator room we started the previous stage in, except
without shortcuts this time. This means literally retracing our steps from Stage
25. Oof. Step forward and kill the guard to your upper right, then the guard on
the scaffolding ahead. Go up the ladder. Use the 2nd box to your right as cover
to kill the enemies coming thru the door. Kill the one that appears to your
upper-right, then the one to your right. Take the ladder ahead and, up top,
enter the door. Enter the next door to your right and assassinate the guard. Hit
the console and switch, then go back the way you came, back down the ladder.
Now, use the door beside the ladder. Kill the 2 guards, using the boxes for
cover. At the very end of the hall, around the corner, is one more guard and the
ladder to the next area.
< CHECKPOINT >
Welcome back to Hell. Hit the switch, then go left. Kill the enemy that runs at
you. Go left again and kill another enemy that approaches. Around the corner to
the right, there are 3 guards. Cling to the right wall and target the one up top
first. He's the most dangerous, offensively. Kill the others and continue to the
next switch. Hit it, then stick to the left wall to kill 2 more guards. There
are another 2 around the next corner. Kill them in one volley if you can, or
they will retreat into nooks. If they retreat, don't go after them yet. There's
a very hard-to-see guard at the end of the hall. Snipe that guy first. Then, pop
into the RIGHT nook and kill the guard (if he retreated). From there, peek back
into the central hallway and kill an enemy that spawned on a platform above.
Then, pop into the LEFT nook and kill the 2nd guard (if he retreated). What an
obnoxious set of enemies.
Enter the room at the end of the hall. You remember this? Kill the 3 enemies
over the conveyor belt, then go thru the gap in the crates ahead and hit the
switch. Reload, then go into the area revealed by the crane and immediately roll
to the box on your left. Crouch here and kill the guards. Go thru the door.
There's a guard and Medkit around the 1st left and a guard and a ladder around
the 2nd. Go down the ladder.
Cling to the far end of the wall to your right. Kill the 2 guards around the
corner. There is 1 more guard behind each of the walls. Exit the room. Kill the
2 enemies in here, then take the next door. Stick to the wall and kill the
guards around the corner. There are more around the next corner. Use whatever
cover is available to take them out. You want to take the first right, but
dispatch even more enemies around the corner first.
Go thru the small door and kill the guards that appear in front of you. Slowly
move thru the rooms, killing guards as they appear. When the two assassins pop
out of the elevator, run back to the first room, sticking close to the inner
corners so they get snagged on walls. Take them out carefully. You DON'T want to
get shanked. Go thru the door they came thru and immediately kill the 2 guards
in front of you. Enter the elevator and hit the panel to end the stage.
<> 5-29.) STAGE 29 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
Exit the elevator and stand to the RIGHT of the crate ahead of you. Kill the
guard you see. There's another guard around (our) left side of the elevator.
Kill him. Use the nearby, large crate as cover to kill the enemy on the balcony
above. The laser control is just around the corner of the next crate. Shoot it
but DO NOT ADVANCE TOWARD THE DOOR. Instead, step back and approach the door to
the RIGHT, moving between the crates. This will prevent 4 enemies from spawning.
Go thru the door and walk up against the wall ahead of you. Now, inch as close
to the laser as possible. Shoot the nearby explosive barrel. Obviously, you
can't pass the lasers, so go in the other direction and immediately duck behind
the SMALL box. An enemy will attempt to flank you, so kill them first. Kill the
other guard. Another guard will be around the next corner. 2 more will be around
the next. As you proceed forward, stick to the left wall and stand behind the
small box. Kill the enemy to your right. Another will have entered to your left,
behind the lasers. Pop out, kill him, then leave the room. There are yet 2 more
enemies around the NEXT corner lol. Getting tired of this yet? Grab the Medkit,
if you need it, then RELOAD and go thru the right-hand door. If you're locked
into the Bad Ending, the level ends here. If not, you will fight:
!!! BOSS: DEATHMASK !!!
First, roll to your right and shoot the guard while crouching. Reload. Remain
crouched and shoot the other guard around the desk. Now, move toward the door
that Cecile left thru and use the wall outcroppings to approach Deathmask. Wait
until he stops firing and shoot the explosive barrels behind him (what a dummy).
This should remove about 40% of his health. Pop him from behind the outcropping
'til he gets close, then just repeat the strategy from the last boss. Yup...
shoot him, run into him, let him kick you, then shoot him again when possible.
<> 5-30.) STAGE 30 <> TARGET TIME: <30:00 (yes, you read that right)
This the longest stage in the game and will take upwards of 20 minutes, even if
you know what to do. There are also a lot of awful positions, angles and some
cheap deaths, so prepare to sit down with this one for a while.
Right after the level starts, RELOAD. A 4-man ambush will run thru the door as
soon as you move. Go RIGHT and duck behind the nearest corner of the table (the
diagonal part). Kill the red shotgun guard nearest you, then the other red guard
to your right. Turn around and kill the guard behind you, then advance and take
out the last one. You'll probably take damage as the tables offer terrible
cover. Go thru the door they came thru and go left to another door across the
hall. Enter. Shoot the guard around the corner. Wait for another guard to appear
in the distance, then pop out and bait him closer to you. Kill him. Crouch-walk
under the window to the right and kill the guards.
There's nobody around the next corner. At the NEXT corner, cling to the right
wall. Peek around and quickly kill the guard, then immediately crouch. Another
guard appeared from the direction you came. Kill him. Handle this window the
same way. There is another guard around the next corner. You have a lot of cover
options, so dispatch him. 2 more guards are stationed around the next corner.
Good lord. Take the door and crouch behind the LEFT side of the center machine.
A bunch of guards will start firing at you from the right window. After a few
seconds, the left window will open, revealing a single guard and a control box.
Kill the guard and hit the control box, then about-face and kill the guards
behind you. Advance and use the control panel to your left. Kill the enemy to
your right, then use the tall machine against the right wall to kill another
thru the window. Crouch-walk until you're under the Medkit, then pop up and
shoot the 2nd window guard. Crouch-walk around to the left side of the Medkit
and kill a 3rd. Take the Medkit. You probably need it by now.
Go around the corner and use the box to dispatch 2 guards. Peek around the next
corner and kill another. Reload, then advance down the hall to kill another.
Take the 2nd door on the right. Make a left and use the wall to kill a guard.
Advance to the right-hand outcropping to kill another. RELOAD, then enter the
room to your left.
Swiftly run RIGHT of the machines and stand to the right of the 2nd machine.
Kill the guards from here and take cover as necessary. The ones dressed in black
will stab you, so prioritize them. Grab the Medkit, if you want, then go thru
the next door. The corner to the right has 2 enemies behind it. Kill them, then
go thru the door. Crouch behind the 1st machine and kill the 2 guards to the
sides, then go past the 2nd machine and ROLL to the 3rd to kill the last. Go up
the stairs and thru the door.
Use the wall outcropping to the right to kill the guards. If the further 2 are
being pesky, roll to the right-hand box and do it from there. Go around the
corner and run to the last box along the right wall. Duck behind it and kill the
2 enemies. There's one enemy in the S-shaped bend ahead. RELOAD and READ AHEAD
before attempting this room.
This is the cheapest room in the game. You have no cover and you're forced to
run into enemies that stab you for 80% damage. It REALLY sucks and comes down to
luck. Too bad it's at the end of a really long segment. Enter and run to your
left. Kill the guard ahead as quickly as possible. Now, run to the door. Roll to
the right as soon as Jean Luc passes the door. Kill the guard, if you can. If
you can't, take a second to breathe and reload. Hug the wall directly ahead of
you and kill the guard around the corner. There is one guard, each, around the
next 2 corners. Go thru the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
Step to the right side of the crate in front of you and kill 2 guards. Run to
the large crate against the right wall, hug it, and kill 1 more. If you stand
behind the last, central crate, you should be able to hit the explosive barrel
against the right wall. This will take out the turrets. Grab the Medkit in the
beginning, then reload and approach the left turret. A guard will pop out from
behind it. End him and go thru the door.
< CHECKPOINT >
If you're on track for the Good or Normal Endings, enter the 1st door for a
cutscene. Exit. Grab the Medkit, if you want, then move to the next door. As
soon as it opens, QUICKLY retreat and duck behind the box the Medkit was on.
Kill the 2 guards near you. Use the wall to your left to kill 1 more around the
corner, then the left-side outcropping to kill a 4th. Enter the door and
immediately go RIGHT, down the ladder. Run up to the wall ahead and turn to your
left. Shoot the enemy. Crouch behind the 1st box on the right and kill the
others. Hug the large crate on the right (just past the staggered walls) and
peek out to kill 2 more guards. Ascend the ladder at the end.
Hug the 1st crate and shoot the guards around the corner. I recommend targeting
the shotgun (red) enemy first. He's the fastest shot and does the most damage.
If you can't hit the last guard, roll to the small box. He'll retreat and you
can shoot him in the back. Go down the ladder. Duck behind the 1st box you see.
Kill the near 2 guards. Advance to the large crate on the left. From here,
you'll have to quickly run/roll to small box on the left, from which you can
kill the last 2 guards.
Reload, then go thru the door. Quickly go left to one of the outcroppings and
hug it. Kill the guards down the hall. There is a Medkit behind them. Go thru
the only open door. Stealth kill the first guard you see on your right, then run
to the LEFT of the large crate ahead. Hug its left side and peek around. Shoot
the explosive barrel closest to you to kill 2 guards. Advance in that direction,
then look to your right. There should be a red guard down the way. Shoot the
barrel near him. Continue in the direction you were going and hit the console,
then go back the way you came.
Go right from the door and hug one of the outcroppings. Dispatch the enemies,
starting with the red one. Enter the next door and stay behind the big crate on
your left. Let the guard walk by and melee him. Now, wait here for the other
guard to pass by and melee him, too. Go up the ladder. Stop behind the first
crate, as close to the right edge as possible, and kill the near guard. Crouch
RIGHT of the small box ahead and kill the 2nd. Run to the far side of the next,
large crate and hug it. Peek around to kill the 3rd guard. Descend the ladder.
Cling to the near crate and wait for 2 enemies to approach. Kill then, then
proceed up the next ladder. Go across the bridge and thru the door.
Crouch-walk straight and SLIGHTLY left into the small box ahead of you. From
here, aim right and headshot the red guard in the distance, then stand up and
headshot the other 2 guards. Destroy the wooden box on the bridge from a
distance. READ this part CAREFULLY before attempting it. There is a sentry gun
across the bridge. You will need to use the large, moving crate to shield
yourself from it. Wait for the crate to move left-to-right, then cross the
bridge as it passes in front of you. Then, as the crate nears the laser, quickly
go around the right side and stand behind the small, dark box. Don't worry, you
won't get crushed. The camera will glitch a bit, so wait a sec, then shoot the
explosive barrel at the first opportunity. Grab the well-deserved Medkit and
continue. On the balcony, go right and stand behind the first, small box. From
here, headshot the 2 enemies further ahead. Once they're down, make a beeline
for the door. Pick up the Aid, if you need it.
<CHECKPOINT>
Is it fair to say WinBack has a pacing problem? Enter the door and hit the
console. Snap to your right and kill the guard. Stick to the END of the nearest
server bank and kill the guard around the corner. Use the console in the
opposite corner of the room. Turn toward the entrance and shoot the guard that
enters. Cling to the server bank ahead (just left of the laser) and peek out to
shoot another guard. As you leave the room, shoot the laser control thru the
window. Go around the corner to your right and duck behind the nearest box. Kill
the 2 guards. There are 2 more guards in the right-hand window ahead. As you
round the corner, crouch behind the box. Kill the 2 shotgun mooks, then enter
the door. Hit the console, let the shutter block the lasers, then go across the
room and hit the other. Cling to the wall to your right. WAIT. There's a moving
laser near you now. Only peek out to shoot the 2 guards when it's moving AWAY
from you. Now, get to the opposite side of the laser (where the Medkit is). From
that position, turn around and stand against the machines to your left. You
should barely be able to see a laser control from here. Shoot it. Exit the room.
Make a left and run/roll alll the way down to the last box in the hall. Crouch
here and kill the guard. There's another guard between the two "rooms". Hug the
walls to kill him. Continue around the area perimeter and kill the guard around
the next corner. Approach the door, then quickly RETREAT to the boxes behind you
as it opens. Kill the 3 enemies and go thru. Run to your left and stand behind
the small, dark box. Kill the 1st enemy that approaches. Let the other lay down
a C4, then shoot him as he runs away. Now, just crouch here for a few seconds.
The C4 should go off and kill another guard. Advance to the large crate in the
center and peek around the RIGHT side to kill 2 guards. Advance again to the
next, large crate, then crouch-walk behind the small box to its left. From here,
kill 2 more guards. Approach the left side of the laser wall and shoot the
control box. There are 3, final guards around the large crates. Handle them
however you see fit. I recommend ducking behind and slightly to the left of the
2nd, small box. The final door is around the next corner. Before you enter,
EQUIP YOUR MACHINEGUN and MAKE SURE IT'S LOADED.
<> 5-31.) STAGE 31 <> TARGET TIME: <4:00
Based on which port you're playing and which Ending you've secured, you will
fight one or both of these bosses. Good: Both, Normal: Dan, Bad: Cecile.
Remember, Normal is EXCLUSIVE to PS2.
!!! BOSS: DAN (Good/Normal) or CECILE (Bad) !!!
Beating him in a gunfight is impossible. He's too fast and his weapons do way
too much damage. Luckily, there's a gimmick. You should already have your
Machinegun equipped. Quickly aim at him and fire off a volley. You're not
actually aiming at him, but the barrels behind him. The bullets will hit them,
incidentally, doing tons of damage. Track him and shoot the barrels near each of
his hiding spots: middle, left, then right. Detonate them before he settles in
or he'll probably get a shot off. He'll then try to come up the ramp to your
right. Shoot the barrel there as he nears it. Equip your Rocket Launcher. Cross
the blue laser to its RIGHT side. If you cross straight ahead, you'll trip red
lasers and won't be able to reach him. Finish him off with a rocket. It sounds
easy, but there's some luck involved. If you get a bad pattern, he can easily
stunlock you into the grave. Unless you got the Good Ending, the game ends here.
!!! BOSS: CECILE (Good only) !!!
This fight is a gimmick, though it will require some execution. Immediately run
to the left ramp. A bunch of red lasers will appear. Unlatch from the wall and
make sure your gun is loaded. Up the ramp is a moving laser that you need to
roll under it when it's about ~75% of the way along its track (in your
direction). You'll then need to quickly shoot the laser control to your right.
Once that's done, man the turret to your left and mow Cecile down. Game over.
YOU DID IT! YOU BEAT WINBACK!!! Those last few stages are ROUGH.
Anyway, if you followed the procedures outlined in the Walkthrough, you should
easily break 20k points, awarding you with Max Power Mode. What's that? Check
the Extras section below.

<> ENDINGS <>
There is quite a bit of confusion regarding endings in Winback. The N64 version
has TWO endings: Good and Bad. The PS2 version has an additional, Normal ending.
Good Ending - You fight Dan, then Cecile; Lisa, Keith and side characters live
Normal Ending - You only fight Dan; Lisa and Keith survive; side characters die
Bad Ending - You only fight Cecile; only Keith survives; Jin and Deathmask
fights are skipped
Endings are determined by playtime and have 2 points of divergence. As stated in
the beginning of the game, the weaponized satellite can fire every few hours. If
you take >3 hours to reach Stage 23, it fires. If you take >5 hours (total) to
reach the 2nd Checkpoint of Stage 27, it fires again. On PS2, letting it fire
once will get you the Normal Ending. Twice: the Bad Ending. On N64, you're
screwed if it fires even once! The confusion stems from sites claiming Winback
has either 2 or 3 endings when it's actually different between versions.
Thanks to Kevin aka. "Game Over" for doing a deep-dive into this mess to figure
it all out (

<> MULTIPLAYER AVATARS <>
You unlock MP avatars by completing the game and based on your final Score.
Beating Easy Mode gives you 3 enemy skins and 2 engineer skin.
Beating Normal Mode gives you the above, plus George, Kevin, Nancy and Kenneth.
Who the hell are George, Kevin and Nancy? They're the worthless government
officials that barely have any bearing on the plot and appear in 2 cutscenes.
Score will unlock Boss character skins. Dan and other members of S.C.A.T. are
available by default.
Earn (points): Unlock:
13000 Lila
15000 Leon
17000 Ryan
19000 Sergeant Thunder
21000 Duke
23000 Gunt
25000 Banderas
27000 Jin

the start. Unlock this by getting 20k+ points in Normal or Hard

Big round of applause to the WinBack team for basically changing shooter games
as we know them. It's understated how revolutionary this game was and it should
be recognized how close they got to doing it right on a first attempt.

So what the hell is "The Mario Club?" lol I'm curious to know if Nintendo had
any part in inspiring this game. Well..aside from the fact that it was an N64
exclusive up until the PS2 remake.
