There are at least 18 games in Konami's Taisen Puzzle Ball series, some with
Castlevania, Twin Bee and Tokimeki Memorial themes. The series began on arcades
in 1994, the last release was for mobile phones in 2011. The N64 version was
released on March 26th 1999 in Japan only. It is a port of the arcade and
PlayStation game released in 1996, but also features characters and gameplay
from the spin-off game Taisen Tokkae-Dama.
The game takes place in Marutama Machi, which literally means Round Ball Town.
Towns with similar names are not uncommon in Japan, I used to live near a
certain “Ball Village”. It's road signs never failed to crack me up.
The word 対戦 in the game title could be translated in many different ways, for
example, fight, battle, match, contest, confront or compete. I feel that Battle
fits the energy that the title is trying to create without giving the impression
of an actual fist fight. I have maintained that word choice throughout the
guide.
I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have
been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game
manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation
projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very
grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history.
