2. Introduction
***************

If you were wondering about the differences between the N64 and DS versions
of Super Mario 64, you have come to the right place! In this completed
version, I have a list of all the Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS
stars, along with information on new, deleted, and changed stars. I also
have sections about other changes that came about when Super Mario 64 made
its debut on the Nintendo DS entertainment system. Also, all of the
information is written from the perspective of the DS version. If I say
something was deleted, it was originally in the N64 version and was not
included in the DS version. Everything is written from the perspective of
the DS version, unless -- of course -- it is noted otherwise.

As you may have noticed, I originally started this guide in February, and
released it as version 0.1. My intent was to eventually include every
single difference between the two games, including every single thing that
was changes in every single level. Needless to say, that would take a long
time to do, and I soon pushed it further and further back in my priorities.
Eventually, I decided I might as well complete the general differences
portion of the guide and publish it as version 1.0. I will probably never
have the area differences section that I originally intended to have, so
this is the completed version. I hope you enjoy looking through it, and I
hope you learn a lot about the differences between the two games. (You can
also use the Castle Secret Stars list as a checklist if you want to!)

******************
3. General Changes
******************

It would be virtually impossible to cover every single difference between
both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. Along with the major changes,
which I am going to attempt to list, there are variety of minor changes
that affect game play.

First, the controls are a little different in Super Mario 64 DS. Since you
do not have an analog stick on the DS, you must use the D-Pad to move
around. If you want to run, you have to use the Y Button! (If you are
questioning that exclamation point, just know that I am a major fan of the
Super NES, and many Super NES games require you to press the Y Button to
run). Although that may seem difficult, it is not. Actually, I found the D-
Pad and Y Button setup to be more useful than the N64’s analog stick. You
can also use the touch screen to move around, which gives you even more
precise control.

Most of the moves are the same, and you use the same types of button
combinations to execute them. It is possible to rotate the camera by
pressing buttons on the touch screen, and the X Button allows you zoom the
camera in and out. The DS version also has a button that centers the camera
with you character, a feature the N64 version did not have.

Along with the control changes, there is also graphics changes. To put it
bluntly, the graphics in the DS version are MUCH BETTER than those of the
N64 version. If you don’t think that the DS has better graphics than the
N64, look at both the N64 version and the DS version and you will easily be
able to tell that the DS version has better graphics. (If you can’t, it may
be time to set up an appointment with your optometrist!)

Also, something has been changed in every level. Originally, I was planning
to map out every little difference in every level, but after mapping out
the differences between the two version’s Castle Entrance Areas, I decided
to give that idea up. I do have the Castle Entrance Area in this guide for
you to look at it; just realize that most levels have more changes than it
does.

The boxes are also done differently in the DS version. Originally, there
were three different colors of boxes, and each one did something different.
Now, the different powers are all located in the same box; the character
you use determines which powerup you will receive. The switch for all of
the powerup boxes is in the place where the red switch was in the N64
version. The other three switches have been eliminated, and an addition
power star was added to the level in which they were located.

Another addition to the DS version is the addition of character caps. Each
of the cap-wearing characters has a cap that appears in some levels. If you
take the cap of another character, you will transform into that character.
That makes it so you do not have to leave the level to switch to a
different character, should you find the need to.

Besides the main game, there are a few other changes. The DS version has a
VS. Mode, where you compete against up to three other players in an attempt
to get power stars. The Mario Face game at the beginning has been replaced
with something called Touch Draw, where you make drawings and then deform
the drawings that you make.

Since the DS has a touch screen, it was appropriate that the DS version of
Super Mario 64 had a special extra that used the touch screen. The DS
version has 36 mini-games, and each one uses the touch screen exclusively.
They add a lot of fun to the game, and they are separate from the main game
(except for the fact that you must capture rabbits to earn them).

*************
4. Characters
*************

Perhaps the biggest change between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS is
the addition of new characters. Super Mario 64 had one character: Mario.
Super Mario 64 DS has Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario. You begin the game
with Yoshi, and as you progress through the game you must go through all
new levels and fight all new bosses to unlock the other three characters.

All of the characters are similar, but there are a few differences between
them. Yoshi and Luigi have the best jumps, but Mario is overall more
stable. Wario is lacking in jumping ability, but his muscle makes him
necessary on many levels. You can also play as him if you want an extra
challenge.

Yoshi cannot perform many moves that the other characters can do (such as
the punch or kick), but he makes up for it in other ways. To begin, he has
his flutter kick. If you hold down the jump button while he is in the air,
he will do his flutter kick, which lets him go higher and further than he
normally could go. He can also swallow enemies and shoot eggs, which is a
great bonus. When he grabs a power flower (which comes out of the ? box) he
receives the ability to breath fire.

Mario is the most balanced of the characters. Besides his all around great
skill, he has special abilities that make him stand out. He is the only
character that can do the wall kick, which is very useful. Inside ? boxes,
he will find either the power flower or the feather. The power flower
allows him to float, while the feather gives him the wing cap.

Luigi is the best jumper in the game. His backward somersault is insanely
high, and he can also float slowly as he descends. That allows him to cover
major distance with his backward somersault. If he runs fast enough, he can
also run on water for a short distance. Whenever he jumps, he can scuttle
during his descent to gain extra distance. When he takes a power flower, he
becomes invisible.

Wario is slow, short, bulky, but muscular. He has no special moves, but his
powerful punch can destroy many objects that would break the knuckles of
the other characters. For additional strength, Wario can use the power
flower to become metal.

7. New Power Stars
******************

Bob-omb Battlefield - Course 1

Star 1: Big Bob-omb on the Summit
While it shares the name of a level in the N64 version, in the DS version
“Big Bob-omb on the Summit” is actually a whole new level. In this level
you must make your way to the top of the mountain, and then you must fight
Big Bob-omb using the Bob-ombs that he throws at you.

Star 3: 5 Silver Stars!
5 Silver Stars is a new challenge where players collect five silver stars
in a level to make a power star appear.

Whomp’s Fortress - Course 2

Star 7: Switch Star of the Fortress
In this level you need to step on a star switch to make the switch star
appear. After that you have to collect the switch star before it
disappears.

Jolly Roger Bay - Course 3

Star 6: Switch Star of the Bay
In this level you need to step on a star switch to make the switch star
appear. After that you have to collect the switch star before it
disappears.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Course 4

Star 7: Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain
In this level you need to step on a star switch to make the switch star
appear. After that you have to collect the switch star before it
disappears.

Big Boo’s Haunt - Course 5

Star 7: Switch Star of the Basement
In this level, you need to break open a black brick block as Wario and then
step on the star switch under it. Having done that, you then needed to
collect the switch star before time ran out.

Hazy Maze Cave - Course 6

Star 7: Underground Switch Star
In this level, you need to break open a black brick block as Wario and then
step on the star switch under it. Having done that, you then needed to
collect the switch star before time ran out.

Lethal Lava Land - Course 7

Star 7: Flaming Silver Stars
To complete this level you need to surf around on a Koopa shell and collect
five silver stars. When all five silver stars are in your control, the
power star will appear.

Shifting Sand Land - Course 8

Star 5: Toy Box Switch Star
In this level, you need to break open a black brick block as Wario and then
step on the star switch under it. Having done that, you then needed to
collect the switch star before time ran out.

Dire, Dire Docks - Course 9

Star 5: Koopa Surfin’ Switch Star
After breaking open a black brick block with Wario, players need to step on
the star switch. When that is done, they need to surf over to switch star
to complete the level.

Snowman’s Land - Course 10

Star 3: Yoshi’s Ice Sculpture
This power star took the place of In the Deep Freeze, but it was different
enough so that it could be considered a new power star. In this power star
you have to use Yoshi to free a frozen power star.

Star 5: Snowman’s Silver Star
This star requires you to search through the level and collect 5 silver
stars. When you have all 5 silver stars in your possession, you can take
the power star.

Star 7: Red Coins in the House
This is the red coin challenge for Snowman’s Land. The red coins are not
scattered throughout the level in this challenge; they are placed together
in the house.

Wet-Dry World - Course 11

Star 7: Soaked Silver Stars
In this level you need to collect all five silver stars, and then you need
to take the power star.

Tall, Tall Mountain - Course 12

Star 6: 5 Secrets of the Mountain
To complete this level you need to find the five secret coins that will
give you the power star if you collect them.

Tiny-Huge Island - Course 13

Star 4: Klepto the Condor
After freeing a power star from the clutches of a large bird, you have to
retrieve that power star from the place where it lands on the island.

Star 7: Switch Star on the Island
When you press the star switch, you have to take the switch star before
time runs out.

Tick Tock Clock - Course 14

Star 2: The Pendulum Switch Star
For this level, you need to press the star switch and then collect the
switch star. It bears many similarities to The Pit and the Pendulums from
the N64 version, but it was different enough so I counted it as a new star.

Star 7: Tick Tock Silver Stars
This level is another one of the five silver star challenges. After you
collect five silver stars, you have to retrieve the power star that
appears.

Rainbow Ride - Course 15

Star 7: Switch Star of the Manor
When you press the star switch, you need to collect the switch star before
it disappears.

Castle Secret Stars

Star 3: Sunshine Isles
A new level with a new challenge: collect five silver stars to earn the
power star.

Star 5: Goomboss Battle 8 Red Coins
This is another new level, although it uses an old challenge. You must go
throughout the level and collect all 8 red coins to earn the power star.

Star 6: Goomboss Battle Switch Star
After pressing a star switch in this new level, you need to race to the
power star in order to collect it in time.

Star 7: Castle Courtyard 8 Red Coins
Defeat eight ghosts in the courtyard to earn their eight red coins.

Star 8: The Secret of Battle Fort
When you find this extra level, you need to collect the five silver stars
so that the power star will appear.

Star 10: Bowser in the Dark World Switch Star
Bowser is back, but there is a new challenge in his world. Step on the star
switch and then take the power star before it is too late.

Star 12: Big Boo Battle 8 Red Coins
Pick up eight red coins as you move throughout this new level to earn this
power star.

Star 13: Big Boo Battle Secret Room
This new level is full of eerie surprises. You never know when you will
stumble into a secret room.

Star 15: Behind the Waterfall Secret Star
This small level has a new power star inside of it, but can you find it?

Star 17: The Secret Under the Moat Switch Star
This level was small with a large bottomless pit. The level now has a
little more space, thanks to a new switch star challenge.

Star 20: Bowser in the Fire Sea Switch Star
Step on the star switch and take the power star, it does not get any
simpler than this. Of course, maybe it would be easier if there wasn’t so
much lava in your way.

Star 21: Power Star of the White Room
An easy but interesting power star to get. I won’t give away any more
details on this unique power star.

Star 22: Chief Chilly Challenge 8 Red Coins
Stuck in a frozen ice land, you need to free eight red coins from their
frozen positions.

Star 23: Chief Chilly Challenge Secret Star
It is cold outside, but this power star has found a way to stay warm. Can
you find its location?

Star 27: Over the Rainbows Secret Star

Bowser has at least one more power star in his control, and the switch star
challenge is the only way to take it back.

Star 30: The White Door
Surely the white door holds something more interesting than a power star,
or does it?

the Ship Afloat were switched.

Star 1: Plunder in the Sunken Ship
In the N64 version, you have to open up the four treasure chests in the
sunken ship in the correct order. When you do that the ship will rise and
you can collect the power star. In the DS version, there is only one
treasure chest that you need to open to collect the power star.

Hazy Maze Cave - Course 6

Star 6: Watch for Rolling Rocks
The location of this power star is different. In the N64 version, this
power star was hidden in a small cave past the rolling rocks. In the DS
version, however, the power star is inside one of the rolling rocks.

Shifting Sand Land - Course 8
The positions of Pyramid Puzzle and Free Flying for 8 Red Coins were
switched.

Star 6: Pyramid Puzzle
The way to earn this star is slightly different. In the N64 version you
have to collect five yellow coins to make this star appear; in the DS
version you have to collect five silver stars.

Dire, Dire Docks - Course 9

Star 6: Inside the Cage
Since the DS version prohibits players from collecting two caps at once,
they only need to collect one cap to complete this level. In the N64
version they need to collect two caps.

Tall, Tall Mountain - Course 12

In the N64 version, Breathtaking View from the Bridge was before Blast to
the Lonely Mushroom.

Star 7: Breathtaking View from the Bridge
As Wario, you need to break open a black brick block to free the star that
is behind the waterfall. In the N64 version, you had to press a switch to
make blocks appear. Then you had to jump onto those blocks to get behind
the waterfall.

Rematch with Koopa the Quick - Course 13

Star 3: Rematch with Koopa the Quick
Koopa runs slower than he did before. In fact, Koopa runs so much slower
than he previously did that I had to consider this a changed power star.

Tick Tock Clock - Course 14

Star 1: Luigi in the Cage
When you played this game on the N64, you merely had to get Mario into a
cage. In the DS version you have to use Luigi’s invisible act to get into
the cage.

Star 5: Timed Jumps on Moving Bars
This level is fairly similar to its N64 counterpart, but you need to use
Wario to break open a black brick block that bars the way to the power
star.

Total Changed Power Stars: 8

10. Name Changes
****************

Bob-omb Battlefield - Course 1

Star 4: Big Bob-omb’s Revenge
This is actually a level from the N64 version, although it has a different
name and a different position. In the N64 version, this was the first level
of Bob-omb Battlefield and it was called Big Bob-omb on the Summit.

Cool, Cool Mountain - Course 4

Star 6: Mario’s Super Wall Kick
In the N64 version, this was called Wall Kicks will Work. Since Mario is
the only character that can perform wall kicks in the DS version, the name
was changed so that players would know to use Mario.

Hazy Maze Cave - Course 6

Star 3: Metal-Head Wario Can Move
In the N64 version, this level was called Metal-Head Mario Can Move! Since
all characters receive their special abilities from a single power flower
in this version, only Wario can become metal. Because of that, they had to
change the name to show which character could complete the level.

Lethal Lava Land - Course 7

Star 6: Inside the Volcano
In the N64 version, this level was called Elevator Tour in the Volcano. The
reason for the name change is uncertain.

Dire, Dire Docks - Course 9

Star 6: Inside the Cage
In the N64 version, this level was called Collect the Caps. Its name was
changed because the layout of the DS version makes it impossible to have
more than one cap at a time.

Wet-Dry World - Course 11

Star 3: 5 Secrets in the Shallows & Sky
In the N64 version, this level was merely called Secrets in the Shallows
and Sky. The name was probably changed so that players knew exactly how
many secrets they were looking for.

Star 5: Go to Town for the Red Coins
In the N64 version, this level was called Go to Town for Red Coins. The
reason for this change is uncertain.

Tall, Tall Mountain - Course 12

Star 7: Breathtaking View from the Bridge
In the N64 version they developers left out the word the, making it
Breathtaking View from Bridge. The reason for the change is uncertain.

Tick Tock Clock - Course 14

Star 1: Luigi in the Cage
This level used to be called Roll into the Cage. Since they changed the
level so that you had to use Luigi to get into the cage, they had to change
the name so that you knew which character to use.

Castle Secret Stars

Star 11: ? Switch 8 Red Coins
In the N64 version, this level was called Tower of the Wing Cap 8 Red
Coins. Since there is only one ? switch that activates all blocks in this
game, they had to change the name.

Star 14: Behind the Waterfall 8 Red Coins
This level was called Cavern of the Metal Cap 8 Red Coins. Since this level
is no longer used to unlock the metal cap, there was no reason to keep the
name.

Star 16: Secret Under the Moat 8 Red Coins
Before the DS version, this was Vanish Cap Under the Moat 8 Red Coins.
Because the vanish cap switch is no longer in the level, the game designers
could not keep the name the same.

Star 26: Over the Rainbows 8 Red Coins
This level used to be called Wing Mario over the Rainbow. The reason for
the change is uncertain, especially since Mario is the only one who can use
wings.

Total Name Changes: 13

11. Castle Entrance Differences
*******************************

Two butterflies were removed from the grassy area in front of where you
start off.

The sign at the beginning of the path has additional comments about Mario
and his friends, as well as more information on moves.

To the left of where you start out, there is an area that had a few trees.
Now it is full of bushes. Six bushes of varying size have been added, along
with two stones. To makes room for these additions, three butterflies and
three trees were taken out of that area.

Two flower beds were added next to the area full of bushes. One of these
flower beds has five butterflies in it; these were added in.

The sign with climbing instructions was moved to another location, a short
distance away from where it used to stand. The sign’s words were slightly
changed.  A sign with information on control modes was added where the
climbing sign used to be.

The trees close to the waterfall were moved further away from the
waterfall. The tree near the waterfall (the one that gave you a green
mushroom if you climbed to the top of it) was taken out. Two butterflies
that used to fly near the trees by the waterfall were taken out.

The sides of the waterfall are no longer made of dirt. Those areas are now
grass.

A stone ramp leading to the bottom of the moat was added to the left of the
main bridge.

A black brick block was placed over entrance to the secret under the moat.

The area under the main bridge has several differences. The two coins
directly under the main bridge were taken out. If you collected these coins
in the N64 version you would receive a life. Also, there is no longer a
shadow underneath the main bridge. An indentation in the castle was added
directly under the main bridge, on the side next to the castle. Finally,
Mario can no longer wall kick off of the walls that are under the bridge.

The brick walls next to the metal door in the moat were turned into dirt
walls.

The floor of the moat was changed from mere stones into organized bricks.

Characters can now long jump up the stone ramp that is next to the castle.

The castle wall at the far right side of the level curves inward into the
grass hill instead of outward. The dirt path that is next to this section
of the wall stays close to the moat and does not go as far out as it used
to.

The fence along the moat at the right side of the level goes all the way
along the moat; it does not stop after a short distance.

The area next to the wooden bridge changed considerably. One of the trees
that was next to the edge of the large pond was moved closer to the castle.
The two butterflies next to the wooden bridge were removed and replaced
with a flower bed. The wording on the sign next to the wooden bridge was
slightly changed. The sign was also moved further away from the dirt path.
The wooden bridge has small walls on the sides of it, so you can no longer
walk off of it.

The sign next to the cannon is shorter and it uses slightly different
words.

The cannon opens after you have 150 stars instead of 120.

A school of fish was removed from the pond and replaced with four other
fish. The large rock in the middle of the pond was made even larger.

The castle itself has many differences. The windows on the turrets are
place on top of each other instead of side by side. The turrets also do not
stick out of the front of the castle. You can now walk on top parts of the
turrets; in the N64 version you would walk straight through the top parts
of the turrets. Each side of the castle has an additional slanted section.

The green, flat area directly to the left of the castle was added. In the
DS version, you can use the green, flat area with Luigi or Yoshi to get on
top of the castle without 150 stars.

The completely flat area on top of the castle roof is smaller. Also, the
area containing three green mushrooms is fenced in. The ground of the
fenced in area is made of bricks instead of shingles. The red box is closer
to the main tower of the castle, and it is directly above the fenced in
area. The back of the castle is next to a green hill, so it does not merely
drop off.

The tall slanted area above the portrait of Princess Peach was removed. It
is also now impossible to walk on the slanted areas that are on the main
tower of the castle. Because of this, you can no longer get to the top of
the castle. Windows were added on either side of the main castle tower.

Yoshi was removed from top of castle, so you can no longer receive one
hundred lives or the special triple jump.
