1. An Introduction...

Ogre Battle 64 is a game that changed my life when I was 13 years old and
received it for Christmas back in 2000. This game, even at almost ten years
old, still retains an aura that very few other games have, a charisma that
keeps me coming back for more. This is my first submission to GameFAQs of any
kind; it's only fitting that it's for the game that brought me to GameFAQs in
the first place. Hope this minor guide on training can help you as CyricZ's
FAQ helped me when I was younger.

2. A Brief Explanation of How Training Works...

When you're on the World Map in Ogre Battle 64, you have the options of going
to the Organize Screen (aka the AWESOME screen), viewing the Hugo Report
(don't forget that it's there!), exploring the area (if you've already played
it), training (that's what this guide's about!), changing your settings
(they're pretty useful), and saving (essential). This guide is about that
fourth option: training.

Basically, what training does for you is it provides you with a unit to fight
against for experience. It costs money to fight, but your units do not die
for good if they die in training. The units you train against are at the same
level as the highest level character in your unit. That's a mouthful.
Basically, if you have a unit that has a leader who is level 7, but everyone
else is level 6, the enemy unit will be entirely level 7. It has its pros and
cons. But for that reason, and several others, I keep everyone in my units
at the same level and experience. Training battles continue until either side
has completely perished. You'll notice that when the battle would normally
end, there's a brief pause, then it starts right back up again. More quirks
about training are in the "Other Stuff!" section.

I said before that it costs money to pay for training. As you'll see, the
amount it costs to train varies from unit to unit, and from unit to unit
</mystery>. What this means is that the higher the level of YOUR unit, the
more it will cost to train. Also, the better the unit makeup of the training
unit, the more it'll cost. At least most of the time. There's a certain
unknown logic to how it precisely works, but if you see that it costs a lot
to train, then the enemy is probably pretty strong. That's a good way to
guess. But this guide is here so you don't have to.

Each area has five different units you can fight in training. They go in a
cycle. Unit 1 is followed by Unit 2, which is followed by Unit 3, and so on
up to Unit 5, which is followed by Unit 1 again. Between battles, it's
sometimes difficult to remember where you left off in your training, but with
this FAQ, you can easily remember where you were. Just do a test run and see
what unit comes up and you'll get your bearings.

Mylesia, Mount Ithaca, and Gules Hill are special maps where Magnus's unit can
fight a venerable dragon and a dragon-related human unit (Dragon Master or
Dragoon) and receive three Elem Pedras. Whichever element you chose in the
beginning of the game, the other three you didn't choose will be represented
on those maps. I'm sure there's some sort of logic to where they're located
depending on which you choose at the start, but that's not what this FAQ is
about. This FAQ is about training. And pork pie hats. But mostly training.

This FAQ is organized by the order in which you can train on a map. Because
of this, Wentinus doesn't come until much later since after Chapter 2 ends,
you're forced out before you can train there. If you're patient, you can get
some good training in on Azure Plains and Mount Keryoleth, though.

While neutral encounters on maps you play on twice sometimes differ, the
units you train against do not. Which may explain why Crenel Canyon features
some of the toughest enemy units you'll see. Below each listing, I'll leave
some comments about what I think about the area's units. You may or may not
find them interesting.

The following is the raw data for this guide. It's pretty dense. Just CTRL+F
to find what area you want. Or whatever you want. It's all good, yo.

Alba

~Dear god. If you were to train on each area thus far, you'd assume that
this, the next area after Volmus Mine, would be only slightly more difficult.
But no. You're fighting against some top-tier enemies here! The Sword Master
and Raven units in particular are nasty. Especially since you don't have
area-effect combo magic at this point. Honestly, stay away from Crenel Canyon
until late Chapter 2 unless you're careful.



Mylesia

~The enemy units are wising up! These units are all pretty well formatted,
no random Berserkers sitting in the back row or Wizards cherry picking in the
front. I just wonder how lazy the designers must've been to put two of the
same unit on the same area. Don't let that confuse you.

~Ouch. That Sorceress unit can pack a punch sometimes. And the Golem unit
might be a little frustrating without the right elemental attacks like non-
Earth spells or elemental weapons. The worst is when your Wizard is casting
Acid Vapor at a Golem doing maybe 10 damage. Whee.



Dardunnelles, the Crossroads

~Now this is just mean. Some powerful units show up in Sable Lowlands. The
infamous Black Knight/Doll Master/Beast Tamer unit appears. Is it infamous?
At least to me, it's infamous. Just think about. Soon it will be for you too.
You'll be like "aww, man, that dude was right, this unit IS infamous." Yeah.



Audvera Heights

their units where they do the least amount of damage. Nonetheless, the
Pumpkinhead is flanked with Goblins eager to slice 'n' dice ya, and the
Cockatrice is still quick as hell and will probably dodge most of your
attacks as will its cohorts, the Raven and brothers Gremlin.



Azure Plains

for it!

Flarebrass is in a weaker position where it can't perform its Crimson Note
against you. Lucky lucky.



Vert Plateau

~The only thing to watch out for here is the Tiamat unit. Luckily, the slow
Black Knight will hopefully allow you to attack first, potentially disabling
the Tiamat with sleep or paralysis. Hell, even a power down would be helpful
to ease the pain it will surely send you.



Capitrium

~I guess this place is where all the chaotic, undead units live. Anyway, since
Ghosts really aren't that powerful and there are eight of them between these
five units, you shouldn't have too much trouble here. The Cerberus unit is
kinda tough, but you've seen it before.

~Man, if that Hellhound and Flarebrass switched places in their unit, it'd
actually put up a fight. The Goblin unit is actually kinda tough because of
the layout and makeup of enemies. But still, not very hard to beat in a few
rounds.



Celesis

~I guess if Capitrium's the dirty city where all the bad characters go,
Celesis is the heavenly place where all the nice people are. Angel Knights,
Priests, and Clerics abound! Luckily, Clerics and Priests are more of an
annoyance than a threat. Even if you're having trouble beating them, you'll
eventually land some critical hits or something and they'll crumble. The
Priest/Angel Knight unit is kinda tough, though. Be well-prepared for them.



Temple of Berthe

~I did a check to see if the enemies here changed between the first and
second stages of the Temple of Berthe. The answer is no. But I'll check
this for Romulus and all the other Siege levels. Anyway, lots of Cockatrice
here. Luckily one unit has them in the front where they're just quick and
painful. Everything else is pretty familiar.



Romulus

~Experiment was a success. Even though Romulus as a Siege level is named
"Fort Romulus" it still has the same training units. So it doesn't make a
difference when you train there. In any case, that Ninja Master unit is
pretty tough. Might as well just try to avoid it if you can. And I do believe
this is the first sighting of the Dragoon, aside from the Elem Pedra battles
of course. I guess it's appropriate, all things considered... </mystery>. And
what's that damn Young Dragon doing in here? Get off my lawn, you Young Dragon!



Ptia, the Secluded Land

~I bet you didn't think you'd see Pumpkinheads again, didja? Yep, I'm pretty
sure that unit model first appears in Dardunnelles II. How'd they get to be
this late in the game? Oh yeah, that IS a Seraph unit. Watch out. It also
costs a fortune to fight.



The Blue Basilica

~Nothing too powerful here, just watch out for the venerable dragons as
always. Also, take note of the bowmen unit, bow-users from the bottom up.
Also, the entirely Black Knights party really should be in a tougher unit
formation than how they are. But they aren't. It's stupid. Some lousy unit
setups for this late in the game.



The Tundra of Argent

~Sheesh, undead city here. Good thing they're all pretty weak. Fun facts,
that Archmage has the book of bane, and the Doll Master has a strange looking
doll. I'm not sure I even recognize it, but it looks like one that may have

~You read that right. There is a Princess unit. Don't worry, in training,
the extra attack clause doesn't apply. So she's basically just a plain ol'
Siren for all it matters. Watch out for the Diana unit. That's one of the
few units in training that has a really good setup. Fourteen attacks, and
they all went for my unit leader, a beefy Black Knight, he still fell.

~I guess this is a resident beast area, every unit has a beast or two. And
t-..wait... Sphinxes?!? WATCH OUT! OH MAN! That Sphinx in the back row can
ruin your day. Or at least the minute it takes to have a battle. Backrow
Sphinxes, as you may know from the Latium level, cast powerful magic. It did
160 damage to my Diana. Ouchies... luckily, you SHOULD be able to defeat the
unit in two turns and you'll probably go first. But... be careful.

~I guess they programmed the game thinking that you'd be able to train after
Chapter 2 ends since these enemy units would fit in well there. These guys
would've been a little more formidable then, but now, they should be pieces
of cake. Kind of a flop for the last training area, right?

A. Training Quirks

There are a few things different in training battles than in normal battles.
Here is a brief list of those things.

-In training, the battles go on until one side is completely demolished. This
means that your guys will keep fighting even when the battle should've ended.

-If someone is hit with a critical and they are pushed back, they'll remain
there the entire battle. So that means if you have a Paladin in the front row,
and he is critical'd to the middle row, when the round refreshes, he'll only
hit twice. Ruh roh!

-Class changes do not occur in training! This is applicable mostly to your
own units and characters. Your Hellhound will not turn into a Cerberus in
training! But this is ALSO applicable to enemy units. Aha! If you hit a Zombie
in training with a fire attack, it WON'T turn into a Skeleton. If you hit a
Stone Golem with a Fire/Wind combo attack, it WON'T turn into a Baldr Golem.
Get the picture? This is probably to your advantage.

-No Elem Pedras allowed! Besides, it's cool to see how powerful your unit is
without pedras since there's no risk of actually losing them.

-If you run away in training, even if you killed a few of the enemies, you
WILL NOT gain any experience! Normally in regular battles, you'd still gain
at least the 1 exp you get just for fighting a battle. Not in training. Nope.

-This is hard to test and prove, but I'm pretty sure that unit morale, the
invisible stat that Flags of Unity affect, can be improved in training.
Sometimes, fresh units that haven't fought together before will use combo
magic after a few training battles. Spooky stuff.
