* Introduction *

    This is the second guide I have written for a game. I noticed
a lack of FAQs for Ogre Battle 64, and since I'm so in love with the
game at this point, I decided I'd try my hand at making one. At this
point it is far from complete, and you may notice holes in parts of
the walk-through. This is because I didn't decide to make notes on
each scene until Chapter 2. The Prologue is also complete because,
in my boredom, I decided to start a new game. If you have any
information on a Scene that you'd like to share (for instance, the
items, neutral characters, and leaders that I may be missing), please feel
free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Questions and comments are also
welcome, but please realize that I have only finished parts of Chapter 3
and cannot help you past the point where this FAQ ends.

        [ 4 ]  Beast Tamer  | Hell Hound |----------|

Here's how it works:

1. Add up all the totals for each of the four categories.

2. The category with the most is your first priority. (ie: if you
have 60 Warrior, 40 Magic, 20 Healer, and 10 Trainer, then Warrior
is your first priority). Match it up with the table above to
find out which unit you'll get.

3. Subtract 32 from your first priority. Whichever is the highest
now becomes your second priority and your second unit. (ie: if your
second priority is Magic, then your second unit will be a Witch, 2 Amazons,
and 2 Soldiers)

4. Subtract 32 from the second priority score. Whichever is the highest
now becomes your third priority and your third unit.

5. Subtract 32 from your third priority. Whichever is highest now becomes
your fourth priority and your fourth unit.

    After your visit with the Archbishop, you are introduced to General
Godeslas and Ariosh, your superiors. You find out that you have been selected
to become a commander and are assigned an advisor - a man named Hugo Miller.

    Under Hugo's guidance, you are assigned your first training mission.

               F: 2x Slash
               M: 1x Slash

               M: 1x Claw

               M: 1x Attack Magic
               B: 2x Attack Magic

               * Archer        Gender: Female
               F: 1x Shoot
               M: 2x Shoot
               B: 2x Shoot
               - Good in either the middle or back row, the Archer is an
               advanced version of the Amazon.

               * Dragon Tamer  Gender: Female
               F: 2x Thrust
               M: 1x Thrust
               B: 1x Thrust
               - Although somewhat weak, when paired together with a dragon
               class, the Dragon Tamer almost doubles the amount of damage
               the dragon can do.

               * Sorceress     Gender: Female
               F: 1x Attack Magic
               M: 1x Attack Magic

               F: 1x Status Magic
               M: 1x Status Magic
               B: 2x Status Magic
               - Sometimes underestimated, the Witch can prove very useful in
               disabling an enemy unit. Their status magic depends on their
               element unless they have a specific spellbook (ie: Book of Fire)

       III. ELITE CLASSES

               * Paladin       Gender: Male
               F: 3x Slash
               M: 2x Slash
               B: 2x Healing
               - Effective in any row, but most useful in the front row where
               he gets three attacks. If attacked from behind, he can also act
               as a healer from the back row, making the Paladin very versatile.

               * Black Knight  Gender: Male
               F: 2x Cleave
               M: 2x Cleave
               B: 2x Word of Pain

               in the middle or front row because they can deliver quite a punch.

               * Beast Master  Gender: Male
               F: 2x Whip
               M: 2x Whip
               B: 2x Whip

               B: 2x Sonic Boom
               - A far superior version of the Fencer, the Sword Master is effective
               in any row. His attack from the back row does big damage but also
               sends half the damage back at the Sword Master.

               * Cataphract
               F: 2x Pierce
               M: 2x Pierce
               B: 2x Pierce
               - One of the most powerful defensive units, the Cataphract can absorb
               a lot of damage, but only does moderate damage in return. They are
               good in any row.

               * Priest        Gender: Female
               F: 1x Healing Plus
               M: 1x Healing Plus
               B: 2x Healing Plus
               - The advanced version of the Cleric, the Priest is without a doubt
               a life saver. Whole fights can be salvaged from a single Healing Plus.

               * Diana         Gender: Female
               F: 1x Shoot
               M: 2x Shoot
               B: 3x Shoot
               - The improved version of the Archer is best in the back row, where
               their arrows can pick off the wounded.

               * Freya         Gender: Female
               F: 2x Cleave
               M: 2x Cleave
               B: 2x Thunder Flare
               - A stronger version of the Valkyrie, they have better defense as
               well as being more useful in the middle and back rows. Good in any
               row.

       IV. SPECIAL CLASSES

               * Gladiator (Magnus)
               F: 2x Slash
               M: 1x Slash
               B: 2x Slash (*)
               - Magnus quite a unique unit. His back row attack depends upon
               which sword he is equipped with:
                       Blessed Sword - B: 2x Healing
                       Ice Blade - B: 2x Ice Blast
                       Sword of Firedrake - B: 2x Fireball
                       Sum Mannus - B: 2x Lightning

               * Gladiator (Dio)
               F: 2x Slash
               M: 2x Slash

               middle row as well.

               * Blaze Knight (Leia)
               F: 2x Cleave
               M: 1x Cleave
               B: 2x Lightning
               - Leia is a more powerful version of the Valkyrie.

               * Warlock (Saradin)
               F: 1x Status Magic
               M: 2x Attack Magic
               B: 2x Group Attack Magic
               - Saradin is a combination of all three magic classes, able to
               use Witch magic in the front row, Wizard magic in the middle row,
               and Arch Mage magic in the back row.

               * Vanguard (Magnus)
               F: 2x Slash
               M: 2x Slash
               B: 2x Slash (*)
               - Like the earlier version of Magnus, he has a special technique
               for the back row depending on the element of the weapon he has
               equipped. Instead of just a single attack magic spell though, this
               time it affects more than one enemy.
               - Magnus can now lead a legion.

               * Warrior (Dio)
               F: 3x Slash
               M: 2x Slash
               B: 2x Slash (*)
               - The advanced version of Dio has three attacks in the front row
               as well as the same special ability Magnus has in the back row,
               except it only targets one unit and can only be performed once
               per fight. He is best in the front row, obviously.
               - Dio can now lead a legion.

               * Rune Knight (Leia)
               F: 2x Cleave
               M: 2x Cleave
               B: 2x Thunder Flare
               - Leia now has two attacks in the middle row as well as a group
               attack from the back. I prefer to keep her in either the middle
               or back row, since she doesn't have the best defense.
               - Leia can now lead a legion.

               * Solidblade (Ankiseth)
               F: 3x Slash
               M: 2x Slash
               B: 2x Clay Assault
               - Magnus' father is another powerful unit, mimicing a Paladin
               with its three slash attacks in the front row while also providing
               a good magic attack from the back row. Useful in any situation.
               - Ankiseth can lead a legion.

       V. DEMI-HUMAN

               * Hawkman
               F: 2x Smash
               M: 1x Smash
               B: 1x Smash
               - Your basic single flying unit. Not as powerful as the Griffin,
               but useful in groups.

               * Vultan
               F: 2x Smash
               M: 1x Smash
               B: 2x Wind Shot
               - A much better version of the Hawkman, the Vultan can lead units
               and allows you to have flying units.

               * Raven
               F: 2x Cleave
               M: 1x Cleave
               B: 2x Thunder Shot
               - The evil version of the Vultan, they can lead units as well.

       VI. MONSTERS

               * Griffin
               F: 2x Dive
               M: 1x Dive
               B: 2x Wind Shot
               - The first aerial beast you'll probably get, the Griffin is
               good in either the front or back row.

               * Oprinicus
               F: 2x Peck
               M: 1x Peck
               B: 2x Windstorm
               - One of my favorite classes, their Windstorm in the back row
               is excellent for finishing off weakened units, and their agility
               lets them get the first attack in. Good for chasing down leaderless
               units.

               * Cockatrice
               F: 2x Peck
               M: 1x Peck
               B: 2x Petrify
               - Another of my favorite classes, I like to keep them in the back
               row where Petrify not only damages the enemy but has a good
               chance of turning them to stone.

               * Wyvern
               F: 3x Bite
               M: 2x Bite
               B: 2x Fire Breath
               - Another personal favorite, the Wyvern is the perfect front row
               compliment to any unit.

       VII. DRAGONS

               * Young Dragon
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Bite
               - A cute little guy, I like to keep him around as a mascot.
               He can transform into better versions of dragons.

               * Earth Dragon
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Acid Breath
               - Dragons can take a lot of damage and deal a lot back.
               Although more useful in the front row, their magic attack
               from the back row is effective as well.

               * Blue Dragon
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Breath of Cold
               - Same as the Earth Dragon, but of the water element.

               * Thunder Dragon
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Thunder Breath
               - Same as the Earth Dragon, but of the wind element.

               * Fire Dragon
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Fire Breath
               - Same as the Earth Dragon, but of the fire element.

               * Ahzi Dahaka
               F: 2x Acid Breath
               M: 2x Acid Breath
               B: 2x Earthquake
               - The advanced versions of Dragons are amazing in any row.
               They can absorb huge amounts of damage and dish out just as
               much.

               * Hydra
               F: 2x Breath of Cold
               M: 2x Breath of Cold
               B: 2x Clear Disaster
               - Same as Ahzi Dahaka, but of the water element. Clear
               Disaster causes enemies to fall asleep.

               * Flare Brass
               F: 2x Fire Breath
               M: 2x Fire Breath
               B: 2x Crimson Tide
               - Same as Ahzi Dahaka, but of the fire element. Crimson
               Tide lowers enemy's power.

               * Tiamat
               F: 2x Toxic Breath
               M: 2x Toxic Breath
               B: 2x Evil Dead
               - Same as Ahzi Dahaka, but the evil cousin.

       VIII. UNDEAD

               * Zombie
               F: 2x Bite
               M: 1x Bite
               B: 1x Bite
               - This is what your character has a chance of turning into if
               left dead until the end of a mission. Aside from regenerating
               after dying in a fight, they are useless.

               * Skeleton
               F: 2x Strike
               M: 1x Strike
               B: 1x Strike
               - A stronger version of the Zombie, the Skeleton can actually
               do some decent damage. I find them useful in the front row
               where they can siphon damage until their dead and then come
               back for more.

               * Lich
               F: 1x Group Attack Magic
               M: 2x Group Attack Magic
               B: 3x Group Attack Magic
               - The Lich is the most powerful magic-user in the game, able
               to use an amazing three group magic attacks from the back row.

       IX. ENEMIES

               * Knight Templar
               F: 3x Slash
               M: 2x Slash
               B: 2x Slash/2x Healing
               - The Knight Templar's back row attack changes depending on the
               unit. You start fighting against them around the middle of
               Chapter 2.

               * Goblin
               F: 2x Slash
               M: 1x Slash
               B: 1x Slash
               - The Goblin is a fast but somewhat weak enemy used first during
               the "Infernal Aura" scene and then again in Chapter 3. The item
               Love and Peace can convert them to your side.

               * Ogre
               F: 3x Smash
               M: 2x Smash
               B: 1x Smash
               - The Ogre is a massive and powerful enemy that is good at
               absorbing and dishing out big amounts of damage. They are
               introduced during the "Infernal Aura" scene and used again in
               Chapter 3.

C. Tips & Tricks

       I. THE PEDRAS
               i. Pedra of Bane

                    Once you complete scene 12, head back to the city
               of Jiram in Soathan. You will encounter a little kid who
               lost his pet dog during the war. If you bring him a hell
               hound he will give you the Pedra of Bane as a gift.

               ii. Pedra of Virtue

                       Once you complete scene 20, head back to the city
               of Muji in Gules Hills to meet a man in search of his
               daughter. He gives you a letter to give to her, should you
               find her. He tells you that she lives in Volmus Mine, so
               visit there first. Once there, you find out that she has
               moved to Mount Ithaca. Visit the city of Caltovich in
               Mount Ithaca to find her and give her the letter. As a
               token of gratitude she gives you the Pedra of Virtue.

               iii. The Four Elemental Pedra

                    The first Elemental Pedra you receive at the beginning
               of the game is based upon Magnus' element. In order to acquire
               the other three Elemental Pedra you must train with Magnus'
               unit in the following cities:
                       * Mylesia
                       * Mount Ithaca
                       * Gules Hills
                    When you encounter a unit with a single dragon and another
               random character, you know you have it. All you have to do is
               survive the fight and the unit's leader will give you the
               Elemental Pedra after the battle.

       II. THE VAMPIRE

                    Although a special class, the Vampire is fairly weak.
               The only advantage they have is their amazing defense and
               the ability to absorb enemy's health. They require a
               Count's Garment and a Bloody Emblem. The Count's Garment
               can be found as a treasure.

               i. Bloody Emblem

                    The Bloody Emblem is tricky to get. A unit with a male
               group leader (alignment less than 49) must visit the city
               of Elgorea in Mylesia. You will encounter a vampire who will
               ask you four questions. The answers depend on the time of the
               day.

       III. THE LICH

                    The Lich is the most powerful magic-wielding class
               in the game. It can cast three group attack magic per fight
               in the back row. They require the Ring of the Dead and a
               Blood-stained Robe, as well as extremely low alignment. The
               Blood-stained Robe can be found as a treasure.

               i. Ring of the Dead

                    There are two ways to get a Ring of the Dead, but one
               of them requires that you take a specific story line.

               * If you choose to go through Tremos Mountain instead of
               Capitrium to reach the Eastern Orthodox Church, then you
               will find a Ring of the Dead just north of the city of
               Coongul (in Tremos Mountains Part A).

               * Once you complete the Celesis mission, head to the city
               of Banna Barra. A girl will give you a letter to deliver.
               Bring this letter to the city of Quelluan at the Zenobian
               Border. The old woman will give you a Ring of the Dead in
               exchange for the letter.
