Introduction -What's this all about?

Hi, I'm known on GameFAQs as Cralex.
After beating Ogre Battle 64 for the first time (100CF), I decided to use my
trusty Gameshark to perfect my army. However, I could only find 50 codes so
I didn't have a lot of room to work with! Now, (at the time I write this)
a few years later, I've hacked codes for all possible 94 characters! (Why
wasn't this done before?) and I've tested all of the classes in the game's
data (supposing that "A4" is the last class in the game).

And now, without further delay, the codes that I wanted when I first used
the gameshark to change classes, and the info that I've learned by using them.

Version 0.0 7/17/2003 -Humble Beginnings
The very start of this FAQ (my first).
I start with freshly hacked codes written on a piece of paper and an empty text
file on a Mac; with these being the very first words that I'm typing here.

Version 0.4 7/30/2003 -(I can't think of anything to put here...)
Despite inexperience, a busy schedule, ...and laziness on my part, I finally got
this FAQ ready for the net with the Character Codes and Class Digits sections
complete. I'm submitting it to GameFAQs with high hopes...

Version 0.41 8/4/2003 -Oops
I fixed the gender codes. Seems that I had put down the luck codes instead of
the gender codes. Thus, I was telling you to change luck to 0 or 1...

Version 0.42 11/2/2003 -Every Little Bit Helps...
I've been very busy for the last few months, but I felt like working today
(being sick on Halloween will do that to you), so I've got complete info on a
whopping three classes, added a Misc. section, and made some minor corrections
to spelling and format all over the FAQ.

Version 0.43 7/20/2004 -Got the basics down...
It's been awhile, but I finally got around to adding complete information about
the "basic generic" classes in the Class Information section. As well as some
minor changes all over.

Version: 0.44 3/7/06 -I'm back! ...For about one second.
Wow, I haven't updated this for about two years now! Unfortunately, I still
don't have the time (and I'm still too lazy) to get to work on a major update
now. However, an e-mail from Thomas Olson has got me to add in three other
codes.  Namely, codes for expendable items, equipment, and some brand-new
codes that could actually make it worth using soldiers in your army! These
can change the stats and apparent class of every single soldier you have!

Version: 0.45 3/19/06 -Ok, more then one second...
This FAQ now includes Forced Equip Codes from Thomas Olson. These codes allow
you to change the equipment of any character (or soldier, if you use with the
Universal Soldier Codes) in your army. Also, he sent in a rather sizeable list
of equipable items that includes all of the stats from the game.

Version: 0.46 8/17/06 -Now with new features!
I added easy ways to get codes for any character's element, gender, and
alignment and minor changes here and there. Each has their own section in the
table of contents, so check them out if you are interested.

Long time no update! No changes at the moment, but I launched a new website

A big thanks goes out to Aranore, who made me realize that there was an

Character Codes -The meat of this FAQ (100%)
***************

Below is the list of all the character codes #1-94. With them, you can change
the class of any character in your army to any other class in the game (yes
even the special characters, enemy characters, and any ones hidden away in the
bowls of the game cart).

Each code will change the class of the character with the ID# that matches the
number of the code.

NOTE: ID Numbers
The codes work based on the ID numbers that the game itself gives to a character
NOT ones that you assign yourself. If you plan to use these codes, I recommend
that you NEVER assign new numbers to your characters.  (If you assigned many
numbers your self, than you may be in for some work to figure out what codes
to use!)

When you have the code of the character that you want to change, then
substitute the class digit of the class that you want (see next section) into
the "XX" part of the code and dump it into your Gameshark.

NOTE: Portraits
These codes themselves only change the character's class and not his portrait.
To change his portrait, start with the code in your gameshark.
Example: #2 "80193C42 00XX".
Choose the class that you want and add it to the  code.
Example: #2 becomes a knight "80193C42 0005".
Make a second line in the code.
It'll look like: "80193C42 0005
                 80193C42 0005"
                        ^
Now if the last digit in  the first part of the code is an A, change it (in one
of the lines) to a 9. If the last digit in the first part of the code is a 2
(like in the example), change it (in one of the lines) to a 1.
Example: #2 becomes a knight and gets a knight's portrait (complete code)
"80193C42 0005
80193C41 0005"
That may have sounded tough, but you'll get the hang of it. The first one
changes his class and the second one changes his portrait. Using both (and
changing his name if needed) will get you an exact copy of any character
in the game.

Now you're ready for the codes.

Note 1= For whatever reason, the game will crash if the character in question
is sent into battle on your side.

Note 2= The character in question will look like a single soldier if he enters
battle on your side, usually because he isn't supposed to fight on your side.
Thus, the game doesn't have a sprite for him. (If a class doesn't have this
note, assume that he will look his part in battle on your side.)

Note 3= Despite the game saying that the character in question can lead a unit,
the game will crash if a unit led by him is dispatched on the field map.

Note 4= The character has no portrait at all!

Note 5= If the character in question is killed in real battle, it's game over.
If he is made the leader of a unit/legion, then you won't be able to remove
him from the unit/legion leader position. If a unit that is led by him is
dispatched on the field map, you won't be able to make the unit leave the
field map.

Note 6= If a unit led by the character in question has golem(s) in it
(4E,4F, and 50), then the golem(s) will gain a small bonus in battle.
(I have no details about that).

Note 7= If a unit led by the character in question has a beast(s) in it
(45-4C), then the beast(s) will gain a small bonus in battle.
(I have no details about that).

Note 8= If a unit led by the character in question has a dragon(s) in it
(38-46), then the dragon(s) will gain a small bonus in battle.
(I have no details about that).

Note 9= If she is the leader of a unit, then every character in the unit
(besides herself) will attack one more time during combat then usual!

Note 10= At the end of a battle, if the character in question is dead
and at least one other character in the unit remains alive, then the
character in question will come back to life with full HP (unless the
character in question was killed with a virtue element attack).

Note 11= For whatever reason, the game will crash if you try to check
the status of a unit dispatched on the field map that contains the
character in question.

Note 12= The character in question will alternate using "Bite",
"Sacred Breath", and "Dark Blaze" during battle no matter what row he's in!
(If you have more than one in a unit, then they will fight like this:
#1 uses bite #2 used Sacred Breath and so on.)

Class Information -Detailed Info About Every Class That this FAQ Covers (11.7%)
*****************

This is where you can find out all there is to know about any class without
having to hack them all yourself.

Here's the way that I format my info:

Class= The name of the class and it's class digit.
Description= The in-game help's description of the class.
Appearance= What the class looks like (on your side if possible).
Name= If a one of a kind person has the class, then I'll give his name.
Gender= The class' gender (if applicable).
Terrain type= The character's preferred terrain type.
Size= The class' size.
Leader= The class' leader ability (if any).
Items= Number of items that the class can hold for his unit.
Equipment= The class' default equipment.
Attacks= Number and name of skills (changes due to equipment are also noted).
Notes= Any noteworthy facts about the class.
Opinion= My opinions about the class (because I don't raise every class
for a few levels, I can normally only say how good their attacks are, not how
good or bad their stats get).

Class= Soldier (01)
Description= "Inexperienced foot soldiers that work in groups of three, doubling
as messengers in group combat."
Appearance= Short fellow with a small spear and an odd, large brown hat (often
in groups of three).
Name= (NONE)
Gender= Can be promoted to either male or female classes.
Terrain type= Plains
Size= Small
Leader= (NONE)

Equipment= Short Spear (can't change) Half Armor (can't change)

Attacks= Front:  Thrust X1

Notes= As all OB64 players know, they can become Fighters and Amazons via
promotion. If you change a character into a Soldier, then he won't join your
Soldier Reserves.
Needed for legions.
Opinion= Weak, with few attacks and no equipment options. Their only use is to
be promoted later.

Class= Fighter (02)
Description= "Basic male class wielding sword and shield, having gained enough
experience to fight on his own."
Appearance= Short fellow with a small sword and shield, and an oversized iron
helm with a blue plume.
Name= (NONE)
Gender= Male
Terrain type= Plains
Size= Small

Items= 2
Equipment= Short Sword   Chain Mail

Attacks= Front:  Slash X2

Opinion= Better then soldiers, with stronger attacks, two attacks up front, and
the ability to change equipment. They have poor stat gains, so it is generally
considered a bad idea to promote Soldiers to Fighters at high levels. Not great
overall.

Class= Lycanthrope (03)
Description= "No different from other knights during the day. But at nightfall,
he turns into a beast and realizes his true strength."
Appearance= Looks like a fighter, but with a longer sword, and horns (instead
of a plume) on his helm.
Name= Messenger
Gender= Male
Terrain type= Plains
Size= Small
Leader= (NONE)
Items= 2
Equipment= Baldr Sword (can't change)  Plate Mail (can't change)
          Kite Shield (can't change)  Armet (can't change)
Attacks= Front:  Slash X2

Notes= This is not Biske's class.
Despite the fact that you never see him fight in the game, he fights fine.
He does not change into a beast at nightfall.
Opinion= It's really odd that this guy is able to fight on your side with no
problems. Attack wise, he's just like a fighter.

Class= Amazon (04)
Description= "Basic female class wielding bow and arrows, having gained enough
experience to fight on her own"
Appearance= Short woman with orange/red hair, who wears a blue top and carries
a small bow in one hand.
Name= (NONE)
Gender= Female
Terrain type= Forest
Size= Small
Leader= (NONE)
Items= 2
Equipment= Short Bow    Leather Armor

Attacks= Front:  Shoot X1

Opinion= Better then soldiers, with stronger attacks, two attacks in the back
row, and the ability to change equipment. They have poor stat gains, so it is

Description= "Knight clad in full armor, who fights for pride and honor. His
offensive and defensive capabilities are well-balanced."
Appearance= Man in silver-colored full body armor, who wears a round helm. He
carries a sword in one hand, and a mid size triangular shield in the other hand.

Description= "Fearless warrior with extraordinary strength and toughness. He
attacks with full might, regardless of status."
Appearance= Muscular man with broad shoulders and a brown beard. He carries an
axe in one hand, and wears a horned helm on his head.

Universal Soldier Codes -Good soldiers are so hard to find these days...

Now, these are interesting codes. They can change the "class", portrait, and
stats for every soldier (as in, the ones in the soldier reserves) in your
army!

Here's what I know:
The soldier's type and number of attacks match that class that you use!
They get a random element. (Most often, water.)
The game says that they still have the soldier class.
Soldier portrait codes only work in the soldier reserves.
Their equipment does not change.
Movement type does not change.
They still can't lead units.
# of held items does not change.
Soldiers can gain experience, level up, and change alignment after a battle.
Soldier's experience, level and alignment are still not shown.
The soldiers still work in a legion core!
Appearance changes to match the class used while in battle.
These codes will cause problems if you change soldiers into a large-sized class.
These changes remain after the game is saved!

Here's what I don't know:
Will these soldiers get promoted to Fighters or Amazons?
If so, will they help the unit leader become a Centurion?
Will the "level ups" that these soldiers gain make them stronger over time?
What happens if health drops low enough for a soldier to die normally?

Here's what it boils down to:
You can make soldiers that are just as good (or better) then your other
characters! Plus, you can create legions with them that actually have strong
legion cores! This removes at least two of the regular problems that comes with
using soldiers. These codes definitely have some possibilities...

Now, you can change the element of any character in your army at will. To get
these codes, just add 8 to any character's class code and you will have the
element code for that character.
(#1 class   80193C0A 000X becomes
#1 element 80193C12 000X.)
Then substitue the element that you want in for X. 0 gives
you the "no element" that the "Ogre" class comes with if you recruit them
in the wild. Anything higher then 4 gives you element "clones" that (I
think) are used for weapons and equipment. These "clone" elements appear
glitchy (but they don't crash your game) and it is not known how (or if) they
affect elemental bonuses.

0= No element

Gender Codes -You're a WHAT?!

One intresting problem that I've run into sometimes when using my class
change codes is that characters always retain their gender no matter what
you do to their class. This causes all kind of weird effects such as:
*NPCs (such as bosses) address your character as the wrong gender.
*Your character becomes the Zombie class of the wrong gender.
*Your character becomes an Angel Knight when he's supposed to be a guy.
*Your character makes the wrong death cry when killed.
To fix (or mess around with) this, add 2 to any character's class code
to get the gender code for that character.
(#1 class  80193C0A 000X becomes
#1 gender 80193C0C 000X.)
0= Male
1= Female
2= beast/dragon

Alignment Codes -I'm Chaotic! No wait, I mean Lawful! Neutral?...

These codes allow you to change a character's pesky alignment quickly
and easily. To get an alignment code for any character, take that
character's class code and add 9 to it.
(#1 class     80193C0A 00XX becomes
#1 alignment 80193C13 00XX.)
00= 000 alignment (absolutely chaotic)
32= 050 alignment (dead neutral)
64= 100 alignment (pure lawful)
Feel free to put any value between 0 and 64 in there to get any
alignment that you want.

Forced Equip Codes -Equip any item to any character.
******************
These codes allow you to change the equipment of anyone in your army
(including soldiers if if you use with the soldier "class" code above).
Ever want your main character to wield the Dagda's Hammer? Done.
Here's how to do it. Take the Class change code that matches the character
whose equipment that you want to change. (For example: #02= 80193C42 00XX)
From there, either make it 25 digits higher then it is, or add 9 to the
last number and 1 to the second-to-last number, whichever is easier for you.
(#02= 80193C5B 00XX) from there, add two more to get the second item slot,
two more again for the third slot, and two more again to get the last item
slot.
(Here are the completed equipment codes for character #2.

Once you have the codes that you want, substitute the digit for the item
that you want (look down) to equip in for the XXX.
These changes can easily be undone if you use the game's "Unequip" command.

Note: Equipment slots
If you change an item that is in a regular equipment slot (you would
normally be able to change equipment there) to a different kind of item,
then your character will be able to choose from that kind of items from
now on. (For example, if you replace a knight's sword with a hammer, then
your knight will be able to equip hammers/axes instead of swords from
now on.)
If you change an item that you would not normally be able to
change (for example: your main character's Blue Sash) then you won't
be able to change the item that you put there.
If you place an item in a slot where your character would not
normally have an item, then you should be able to change the item without
codes. (However, your selection will be invisible.)
Finally, if you would not normally be able to change a character's
equipment at all, then you won't ever be able to change that character's
equipment without using codes.

Note: More then one weapon
Feel free to equip a character with more then one weapon. It works.
However, the game will only look at the primary weapon slot (and
possibly, the default slots for other equipment types) when deciding
attack element, attacks based on weapon element, and weapon effects.
(In other words, you can't have a single character that paralyzes
and putts to sleep in a single hit.)

Gender
If you change a male/female character to a class of the opposite gender, then
all kinds of weird things can happen. For example, the non-player-characters in
the game will refer to your character as if he/she was the opposite gender. If
your character should happen to turn into a Zombie, then they will actually
change into the Zombie class of the opposite gender. If your character is killed
in battle, then they will sound like the opposite gender. (My Centurion [Female]
who sounds like a male, and my Gilbert that screams like a girl are good
examples!)

I think that you add 38 to '0C' with a hex calculator to get codes for higher
character numbers.) that you should be able to use to fix the problem. Also,
adding 2 to any character's class code will work as well.
I'm pretty sure that simply changing classes (the normal way, not with a
gameshark) that match the gender that you want won't work.

Of Large and Small Size Classes
All OB64 players know that you can only have 5 characters in each unit, and that
large size classes count as 2 characters and can't be placed next to other
characters in their unit. However, you can overcome both rules by simply
changing small character classes in a unit into large classes! If you do so
(even if you are breaking both rules in the process), then your new powerhouse
unit will be saved on your game, will battle without problems (think of it, what
problems could a unit with 3 ogres in the front, with a sphinx and the unit
leader in the back (or any other unit with a large class overdose) possibly
have?), you will still be able to check the unit's status, and to sum it all up,
will be just like a normal unit! If you ever change your unit's formation and/or
remove enough characters so that you aren't breaking the rules anymore, then you
can't put the unit back together (so that it breaks the large class rules) again
without starting the process over (changing them to small classes, re-forming
the unit again, and changing them to large classes).
Do take note, that if your class changing lets your unit can carry more then
10 items, then the game will crash if you do something that relates to the
unit's carried items! That's the only side effect that I know of for such a big
rule breaker, not bad!

FAQs -Answers to questions that I expect to be asked.

Q: Why don't any of your codes work?
A: You may have forgot to turn the enable code for this game on.
It's: F109A730 2400.
Also, your gameshark may be too old. The problem is, I don't know how old is
"too old"! These were made and tested on a GameShark Pro version 3.3. If they
work on anything older, then tell me! I've gotten some e-mails about the codes
not working at all that I simply could not find a cause for the problem. I have
not gotten many e-mails about my codes working to balance these problems out. I
would appreciate it if you could send me an e-mail if my codes work for you.
Nothing big or personal, just a notification.

Q: What exactly do your class codes change?
A: The class codes change everything relating to battle: sprite, attacks, leader
abilities, preferred terrain type, size, default equipment, the game's
description, number of items that can be held, etc.
The portrait codes change the character's portrait, what the character says on
the field (if the portrait belongs to a special character's portrait or a
generic character's portrait), whether or not the character will let you change
his name, etc.

Q: Why did my character's class change, but not his portrait?
A: You got the character code right, but you didn't get the second code,
the one that changes portraits. Check the note about portraits in the
Character Codes section.

Q: Why did my guy's portrait change, but not his class?
A: Well, you got the code that changes portraits down, but remember that
you also need the character code to be on as well.

Q: What if I WANT a character with a portrait that doesn't match his class?
A: Go ahead. So far I haven't tried it out a lot, but my Vad class character
with a generic Grappler's portrait hasn't given me any problems.

Q: What if I make a character who has a non-normal portrait the leader of a
unit (Like Yumil)? What happens when he/she needs to say something?
A: The game is set up so that any character that does not have a unique
set of quotes will use the generic quotes that depend on alignment and
gender. Therefore, your unit leader will talk like a generic character.

Q: Hey, my new character fights ok, but he looks like a soldier in battle!
What gives?
A: There are many classes in the game that you wouldn't normally be able
to get in your army (Enemy classes anyone?). Almost all of them look like
a soldier in battle because they aren't meant to fight on your side. Thus,
the game has no sprite for the character and puts the soldier there instead.
Notable exceptions are: Lycanthrope["Messenger"'s class](03), Werewolf(2A),
Overlord[Yumil's Class](62), and Witch[Deneb's Class](A3).

Q: What happens if you use a character code, but you don't already have a
character with that ID number?
A: Nothing. No glitch, no new character with zero stats, nothing.

Q: What happens if I change a small character in a unit into a large one,
breaking the number of characters in a unit and/or proximity to other
characters rules?
A: As far as I know, the unit should hold together (and fight) ok!
(The game will however, crash if the changes you made will take the number
of items that the unit can carry higher then 10, and if you then try to
use an item carried by the unit or of you try to give the unit items).

Q: What if I change the hero into another class?
A: It'll work... until you see a cut scene that he would normally take part
of (in other words, as soon as you try to progress in the game's story!)
and the game crashes. I don't recommend changing the hero to another class.

Q: My male/female character sounds like a female/male character if killed or
is talked to by the enemy as if he/she was a female/male before a battle or
changes into a Zombie of the opposite gender!
A: It seems that if you use a gameshark to change a character of one gender
into a character of another, that the game will still assume that the
character is of the first gender; thus, it will have the dieing sound of the
wrong gender (my Gilbert that's known to scream like a girl being my favorite
example), will get the enemy character's speech for the opposite gender, and
will turn into a zombie of the opposite gender.
As for fixing the problem, you could use the gender codes that dancing elf
found:
Character #1 is male= 80193C0C 0000
Character #1 is female= 0193C0C 0001
Character #1 is a "beast/dragon class"= 0193C0C 0002
DE says that you add 38 to '0C' with a hex calculator to get codes for
higher character numbers. You could also add 2 to any character's class code
to get a gender code. It's up to you.

Q: Can I host your FAQ on my site?
A: Don't ask. Unless your site is big, has a good reputation (I will check
it!), and makes no money from FAQs, then I'm sure to say no. (And even then,
I'm likely to refuse.)

help and told him to keep me posted so that I could nail down the problem.
I never heard from him again, and I wasn't very happy about it!
