In January of 2020 I decided I wanted to beat every Japanese N64 game
in order of release date to give myself a sense of how the N64 evolved.
I have lived in Japan since 2015 and have been studying Japanese seriously for
about 3 years. Translating N64 games gave me the motivation I needed to pass
the N2 level of the JLPT. Amusingly I also learned to read by reading N64
magazines when I was a child. It has come full circle.
When I discovered The CRP Addict's blog I decided I wanted to do something
similar for the N64. The CRP Addict has been playing almost every RPG that came
out for home computers in order of their release date. This has allowed him to
gain a large amount of knowledge of the genre as a whole. I have also been
following Chris'Survival Horror Quest over at Dream Dawn since 2010. He has
tried to playand review every single survival horror game. I was really
impressed by the deep level of knowledge he gained by taking on such a
challenge. The TV show Game Center CX was obviously another big inspiration. I
always wondered what it would be like to be locked in a room, Old Boy style, and
to only be able to win your freedom by beating an endless stream of bad video
games. Now I know. It's very depressing.
I decided I wanted to finally play all of those Japanese games that I had read
about all those years ago in the British publication; N64 Magazine.
Additionally, I realized that if I did not start collecting N64 games now, they
might all disappear by the time my daughter was older. Because the N64 did not
sell well in Japan, most of the games were cheap and easy to get. As the
Japanese tend to take care of their possessions, many of the games were still in
good condition or even still boxed.
I was surprised to discover that many of the Japanese N64 games did not have
guides on GameFaqs. Even after 20 years, and countless numbers of people
becoming fluent in Japanese, there was still very little information about most
of the Japanese library. In 2020 I started working with the hacker and gaming
historian Ozidual, to translate and write guides for said games. Ozidual has
done the necessary hacking to make Shiren the Wanderer 2, Getter Love and Mareel
2 playable in English. He has shared many valuable scans of obscure Japanese N64
game manuals on the internet archive. He is also well known for fixing a bug in
Space Station Silicon Valley that finally allows you to collect all the trophies
in the game!
Now there is some sort of guide for almost every Japan exclusive game. Many of
them are manual translations or translation guides, but I intend to add full
walk-throughs to all of them as I play through all the games. I have played most
of the games on the easiest difficulty to make the best use of my time. However
the Mahjong games are so difficult (even for good Mahjong players) that I have
decided to tackle them after I have got better at Mahjong. Sometimes I skipped
ahead if a certain game was giving me trouble, rather than giving up completely.
You can find all my times and the ending screens on my website. Gamefaqs does
not allowing uploading of game screens unless they are taken with proper capture
software/hardware which I do not have. Here is my site, I also have a thread on

Unfortunately I have no way of streaming my gameplay, so for proof purposes
ending screens will have to do. I understand this invalidates any of my runs
from any leaderboards. As a family man, I have very little time to play video
games, so the challenge is going slowly, but progress is being made. As of
February 2022 I have beaten 40 of the games, and written over 60 guides. I have
finished most of the 1996 and 1997 games and am heading into the 1998 games.

04/01/2020 - The challenge begins with Super Mario 64.
06/06/2020 - I write my first gamefaqs guide, for 夜光虫II 殺人航路. I begin
working with Ozidual to translate the entire game as well.
25/08/2021 - I complete my 60th gamefaqs guide.
31/10/2021 - The first draft of the 夜光虫 II translation is 64% complete.
28/05/2022 - The challenge is 25% complete when FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 is
beaten.
How to beat every Japanese N64 game
1.Learn Japanese. I recommend moving to Japan and choosing the JET ALT class.
This gives you an easy job, a good wage, health insurance, and a lot of free
time at work. Once you get there you should study Japanese everyday. Use
Wanikani to learn all of the Kanji and the Sogo Matome books to learn all the
grammar. It should only take you about 5 years to master Japanese enough to play
most games comfortably.
2.Buy all of the games. Buying a full set in Japan cost me about 1000 dollars.
Compare this to buying a single copy of Clay Fighter's Sculptor's Cut in the
USA, which will set you back at least 900 dollars.
3.Beat all of the games.
Well that is the end of the guide, thank you for...What? That's not enough
information? Ok well allow me to explain in more detail what exactly you need to
do to trigger the credits in each game. If possible I have also suggested what
getting 100% entails. If you have any more information about getting 100% in a
certain game feel free to message me or leave a comment on this guide.
Obviously I'm joking about the Japanese part, you can beat a lot of the games
without any Japanese knowledge and you can refer to my guides if the language
barrier is giving you problems.
2.Game list
The games are listed in order of release date. If more than one game was
released on the same day, they are listed alphabetically. I have translated the
titles directly from Japanese so some games have new titles. For example, Turok
2 became Violence Killer in Japan, and Blast Corps became BLAST DOZER.
I have listed my PB for beating each game. The are written in the Hour : Minute
: Second format. I'm no speed runner and I was playing many of the games for the
first time. Many games are well known so I did not think it was necessary to
write exactly how to beat each game.
