This is my translation and guide for the Japanese only Pachinko game, Heiwa
Pachinko 64, released on November 28th 1997 by Shouei Systems. Heiwa, 平和, means
peace in Japanese, but in this instance it refers to the Heiwa Corporation a
pachinko manufacturing company. It has been making Pachinko machines in Gunma
prefecture since 1949. The company was founded by Kenkichi Nakajima, a Korean
immigrant, who came to Japan during WWII. He worked in an arms factory during
the war, and this is perhaps why he called his company Heiwa. In 1955 he
unfortunately went bankrupt when pachinko was briefly banned. Faced with 90
million yen losses, he opened two new companies and somehow managed to revive
his business. It grew to be one of the largest manufacturers of pachinko
machines, employing nearly one thousand people. Its machines pioneered several
innovations in the industry. In 2004 it broadened its business operations when
it began opening golf courses.
I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have
been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game
manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation
projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very
grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history.
Why did I write this? Well mostly as a practice translation exercise. But also
because I want everyone to be able to play every N64 game and experience them as
if they were new. Making an actual translation patch for most games would be
unnecessary, but a guide would certainly help with most games.
This game was published by Amtex subsidiary of the Heiwa company. The U.K. mag,
N64 magazine reviewed this game giving it 12%, writing; “Like pinball without
the skill or fun. Dull, dull, dull.” This is one of the 3 Pachinko games on the
N64 and they are incredibly difficult and tedious for non-pachinko fans to
complete. I would rank this game as the worst of the three on the N64, with
Pachinko 365 Nichi being the best. However this game was also the first Pachinko
game released on the N64, so it is understandable that it is not as good as the
others.
Why does this game exist? It seems that people want to practice their Pachinko
at home too. I suppose the real “fun” in this game is gathering basic knowledge
about all the machines, then combining that with knowledge about how the parlors
operate and which machines are paying out the most. Then using that knowledge to
exploit the game and win as much as possible.
I hope this translation helps somebody complete this game. It’s funny to think,
but this game has probably never been completed by anyone outside of Japan. Good
luck!
