1 Introduction
This is the first and only single player Hanafuda (Flower Card) game released
only in Japan for the N64, by Altron on December 5th 1999. Altron are now mostly
know for making licensed video games based on family friend TV shows such as
Spongebob and the Simpsons. Hanafuda is a game generally played by women, and
this game features a romance story, making it one of the few games on the N64
which you could claim was made mostly for a female audience. It also also
strongly linked to Yakuza, but clearly this game was not made for that audience!
Playing cards were bought to Japan by Portuguese sailors. The Japanese began
producing their own playing cards after 1573, however these were soon banned
when the country closed its boarders in 1633. The game Hana Awase, or Flower
Matching was made before 1816 and was a banned gambling game, and was based on
previous versions of Japanese playing cards. Famously, Nintendo began as
hanafuda production company in 1889. The game has 12 suits, each a month of the
year shown by a relevant flower. Within each suit are four cards, a bright card
(20 points), an animal card (10 points) a ribbon card (5 points) and a plain
card (1 point).
In order to play this game you are going to need to know how to play Hana Awase,
Koikoi (come come) and Oichokabu. Koikoi became some what popular after it was
featured in the anime Summer Wars. You especially need to know what cards make a
winning hand (Yaku). This is really beyond the scope of this guide, but you can
find the rules here. Good luck.

Calculating the points for Hana Awase
The points are calculated for each player based on the value of each card they
have. If a player loses to another players hand they must pay penalty points
based on that hands value. Uefuda are 20 points, Tanefuda are 10 points, Tanfuda
are 5 points and Kasufuda are 1 point. If the player draws a winning card
themselves, the other two players must pay the winning value of that hand.
At the end of the game, 88 points will be distributed based on the scores. These
88 points come from the fact that the 48 cards have a combined value of 264,
this is then divided amongst the 3 players. If the player draws a card for a
winning hand, for a hand that has a value of less than 20 points, it will not be
treated as a win, and another game will be played.
Pg 15 Oichakabu
You can choose a character and two opponents. You are competing to match 2 or 3
moon cards. The player with 9 points, or if the dealer is closest to 9 points
