This guide has been designed to give all possible information about the 280
different pitchers in World Series Baseball for the Sega Genesis. This is not
designed to teach the basic rules of baseball. These can be found at any number
of websites. This guide is not accurate for future versions of WSB (WSB '95,
WSB '96, etc.).
(The first pitcher listed is the No. 1 starter. The last pitcher listed is the
closer.)
Player Names not from my own memory are from baseball-almanac.com and mlb.com.
PITCH TYPES
Note: All directions are for right-handed pitchers, from the catcher's point of
view. Reverse for left-handed pitchers. Pitches are listed in order of
velocity, fastest to slowest.
Fastball: Obviously the fastest pitch. Simply travels in a straight line. Ends
up at or near the aim point. A fast fastball in All-Star mode usually breaks 95
mph (by a power pitcher; sorry, no Charlie Hough). Always the C pitch. 251 of
the 280 pitchers have a fastball.
Splitter (Also split-fingered fastball): Slightly slower than a fastball. Ball
sinks before reaching the plate. Almost always the A pitch. 54 pitchers have
splitters.
Slider: Heads in a straight line, then breaks hard to the right before reaching
the plate. On fast, can reach 80 mph. Can be the A or B pitch. 228 pitchers
have sliders.
Sinker: Sinks (duh) before reaching the plate. Much like a splitter, only
slower. Can be the A, B, or C pitch (usually A). 48 pitchers have sinkers.
Curveball: Ball goes up and to the left of aim point, then crosses the plate at
the aim point. With the exception of Tim Mauser, always the B pitch. 229
pitchers have curveballs.
Screwball: One of the strangest pitches. Best described as an opposite slider;
goes in, then out, reaching the plate to the right of the aim point. Always the
A pitch. Only 6 pitchers have screwballs.
Change-up: Differs from the fastball only in speed (much, much slower). Always
the A pitch. Only 19 pitchers have change-ups.
Knuckle (Knuckleball): The strangest and slowest pitch, usually around 40 mph.
It moves up and down, reaching the plate at or near the aim point. Always the A
pitch. Only 5 pitchers have knuckleballs.
