Author's Note
----------------------------
Although I'm not one of the biggest hockey fans in the world, I've always
found hockey to be an electrifying sport. From the fist-bashing fights, to the
amazing goals, each provides an aspect that others sports fail to capture.
This following FAQ is based on NHL 95' for the Sega Genesis, which happens to
be one of the closest representations to the sport for an older cartridge
game. You'll discover a few key strategies in this guide, along with roster
listings, and descriptions of the different game modes.

Contributing/Feedback
----------------------------
If you have any contributions, feedback, or strategies you'd like to have
added to the guide, contact me via e-mail or on GameFAQs. I'll be more than
content to add your segment of information, and will also provide credit. If
you have any questions you'd like added to the Common Questions section, ask.
I simply don't have the time to sit around thinking of questions. Provide me
with what you want to know!

Updates

Final update.

=07/30/04= v.Final
This is the final update for this guide. At least it was one of my earlier
projects that boosted me into the FAQing world.

=01/19/04= v1.0
Started the basic guide for the game. It's going to take a bit of time to list
all of the roster players since I need to note them down directly from the
game. Thankfully, I have some free time to spare to get most of them done
today.

============================
- 1) Introduction          -
============================
NHL 95 is an official hockey game designed for the Sega Genesis back in the
heyday. This was a time where hockey was on a slow decline from popularity,
and baseball had just emerged from a major strike. In many cases, it brought
more fans to the sport that was born for the ice. Thankfully, NHL 95 was such
an accurate representation of the sport that many people became addicted to
the game. It featured controls that could let you do pass and one-timer hits.
You could check incoming players to the ground, and accept a roughing penalty.
Just about every element of hockey (including the official rules) were
implemented in this game. While it may be outdated, it's certainly an
excellent hockey game that any Genesis owner should at least try.

Here's a brief excerpt from the back of the game box:

It's the Stanley Cup. And only the victors of the grueling NHL season earn the
right to have their name engraved on it. That's a whole season of blistering
slap shots, board checks, hot rookies and mid-season trades. NHL '95 drops you
into the opening face-off staring down the line at 84 relentless games -
Trying to carve your name on that Cup.

- 2) Controls              -
============================
To my surprise, most of the controls in NHL 95 are easy to get use to. With a
simple 3 button layout, there are no pesky side or trigger buttons that need
to be pressed. Most elementary functions, such as shooting goals and passing
the puck are designated with one button. To take control of a special player,
you simply hold down a button. EA Sports did an excellent job in keeping it
simple, yet organized enough to get your groove on.
______________
/Menu Controls/
----------------------------
Up/Down/Left/Right control pad - highlights items, changes options, navigates
C or START - selects, initiates selection
B - cancels, goes back

________
/Offense/
----------------------------
control pad - moves player in pressed direction, also affects direction of puck
A - fakes a shot, (tap) for a flip pass/clear puck, (hold) for a line change
B - passes puck to nearby teammate
C - wrist shot, (hold) for slap shot, or a quick shot with incoming puck
START - pauses
TAP A (in any zone) - performs a drop pass above defenders

=== Face Off ===
B - takes control of faceoff player, checks stick to "attempt" faceoff win
C - speed burst
control pad - controls where the pass goes

- when you shoot, holding left or right on the D-pad will affect where the
puck is aimed towards the goal

- a quick shot only occurs when a pass is incoming to the player. Press B to
pass the puck, then quickly press C to take control of the nearby player, and
press it again to take a quick shot off the end of your stick.

- face offs come down to timing. Wait until the referee is about to drop the
puck, then quickly press B.

- the drop pass is best used when you want to get the puck over a defender
without risking a turnover.

________
/Defense/
----------------------------
control pad - moves player in set direction
A - hold/hooks nearby player, (tap) for a diving block shot
B - pokes player, trips, or switches to closest player
C + control pad - speed bursts or body checks a nearby player

- if you have penalties on, and you trip a player going for a goal, be weary
of the penalty shot.

- most of the penalties in the game will be caused due to roughing, slashing,
or tripping when using the defender's buttons. Use them sparingly, but don't
overdo them (unless you're playing no penalties).

_______
/Goalie/
----------------------------
HOLD B - puts you in manual control of goalie (this option must be turned on)

=== With Puck ===
A - clears puck
B - passes in direction pressed
control pad - controls where the puck goes, or where goalie moves

=== Without Puck ===
A + control pad - dives
C - attempt a save

Line Changes
----------------------------
HOLD A - brings up line change menu
A/B/C - press the button designating which new line you want brought out

- there's a stamina bar next to the A/B/C lines for your team. Pick one that
has the most stamina (best performance).

Instant Replay
----------------------------
A - rewinds
A + B - centers the camera
B - (tap) freeze frame, (hold) slow motion
C - play/stop
START - brings up reverse angle or option menu

- 3) Game Modes            -
============================
For being a simple old style hockey game, NHL 95 actually has several game
modes that the player can choose from. Many are simple regular exhibition
games, with added options, while some include the option for a season and
playoffs. For the most part, you'll probably only play a few of these on a
regular basis. First of all, there are key options which nearly each game mode
tends to share. Become familiar with them, and what they actually mean:

||| Team 1 & Team 2 |||

"These let you select two teams to face each other. There are 26 NHL teams you
can select from, and two additional All-Star teams from the Eastern and
Western conferences. Team 1 is always the home team."

||| Period Length |||

"Permits you to select how long you want the game to be. Every hockey game is
split into 3 periods. You may select from 5, 10, or 20 minute periods. Twenty
minutes is what the real NHL plays at, but I'd recommend 10 for realistic
statistics."

||| Goalies |||

"Let's you select from auto-controlled goalies, or manually controlled.
Manually controlled let's you control him by holding down the B button. Auto
controlled will have the CPU control him when he doesn't have the puck.
Personally, I'd recommend manual control since the CPU goalie moves slower on
side to side shots."

||| User Records |||

"This feature let's you save your all-time records to a user name. Sort of
like the ultimate way to see how many goals you can score in a game, and so
on. Only games you win are counted towards your user record."

||| Penalties |||

"Penalties are the restricted procedures in the NHL that can break or
strengthen a team. If you have this option on, then NHL 95 will play like a
real hockey game. At the same time though, you can't go bashing everyone's
head off. Occasional penalties are called for elements like roughing,
charging, tripping, slashing, and so on. Penalties take the man who committed
the violation off the ice, meaning your team will be down one player for the
duration of the penalty. This gives an advantage to the opposing team."

||| Line Changes |||

"If this option is selected to off, there is no stamina drain on your players.
Plus, they stay in the whole game. But, if you want to keep it realistic, I'd
select it to on. Players will become tired the longer they're on the ice, plus
you have to manually switch by holding down the A button. Useful for keeping
the strategic element of hockey in place. Auto will let the computer do it for
you."

- Now onto the actual game modes you may play:

Regular Game
----------------------------
Pretty much you're regular exhibition game. It doesn't count towards your
season, just a matchup between two teams. Great for practice, or a quick game
between friends.

Game with Trades
----------------------------
This is the same as the previous exhibition mode, except you can now save any
stats to your user record. After you select your team and controller, you are
able to input up to 7 names, which will then be saved as individual user
records.

Practice Mode
----------------------------
If you want to get some training time in, I'd recommend you test out the
practice mode. Basically, it allows you to play by yourself (with two
goalies), and take pot shots at the opposing net. Great for practicing fake
shots, or getting use to those breakaway moments.

Playoffs
----------------------------
Sort of like an elimination tournament where all you need is one win to
advance. If you make it all the way, the Stanley cup is yours. The progress of
the playoffs can only be saved to one slot, so perform one playoff tree at a
time.

Playoffs/7 games
----------------------------
Exactly like above, except you need 4 wins out of 7 games per series matchup
to move on. That's pretty much how the real NHL playoffs are, except this one
is a tad longer game-wise.

Season
----------------------------
Starts a new season in which you can play as any team for their entire 84 game
schedule. You do not have to pick a specific team, but rather you just check
off specific games you want to play. There's no restriction on which games are
human controlled, and any that you do not play are simulated. Season progress
is saved to the game's internal battery, but it can only handle one season at
a time. Season mode also keeps track of all stats in the league, percentages,
and team standings.

(( Keeps track of: ))

        - NHL Standings (wins, losses)
        - Individual Team Schedule Calendars
        - League Leaders
        - Team Stats
        - Player Stats
        - Game Highlights
        - Simulate games up to a certain day

- To make roster transactions during a season, there should be several other
game modes in the main menu that permit you to do so. Go to these menus when
you want to perform a trade, then go back to your season to view the change.

Trade Players
----------------------------
Allows you to select players from two different teams, and make a trade
between the two. The CPU will "enforce" the trade to make sure it's balanced.
If it isn't, your proposal will be denied for being overbalanced, or unfair to
another side.

Create Player
----------------------------
An interesting mode that gives you the ability to create and assign a player
to free agency in the NHL. Everything ranging from size to player ratings can
be customized:

      [1] - Create a first & last name for the person.
      [2] - Assign their position, weight, jersey number, and primary hand
      [3] - Allocate points to 7 categories:
            + Agility (affects overall speed)
            + Defensive Awareness (presence on the field)
            + Puck Control (stability and control on the puck)
            + Stick Right (shooting power from right side)
            + Stick Left (shooting power from left side)
            + Glove Right (shooting accuracy from the right side)
            + Glove Left (shooting accuracy from the left side)

- You're automatically given 300 extra points to assign to the player, but not
all of them have to be used. Press START to finish and he'll be added to the
free agency list.

Sign Free Agents
----------------------------
Once you've created or dropped a few players into free agency, go here to sign
them to a team. Unlike futuristic sports games which let you sign them to
fancy numerical contracts, you simply "pick them up" without any hassles. Boy,
I wish negotiating was this easy. Press C to sign a player to a team. You can
navigate between teams using the A & B buttons.

Release Players
----------------------------
Let's you get rid of players that you don't want on certain teams. Navigate
between the teams, then press C to release that player to free agency. This
can be very cheap to build up a superpower team.

Shootout
----------------------------
Probably the most fun you'll have with the game when you're not playing an
exhibition matchup. Shootout is similar to soccer where one person charges
with the puck, and tries to score it on an opposing goalie. You basically
select 2 different teams, and five men who will participate in the shootout.
Whatever team scores the most points on five tries (with the five different
players in the selected lineup) wins the shootout.

- This is most of what you can do in NHL 95. Sort of limited to an extent, but
it has plenty of depth, especially in season mode. 4-Way Play really increases
the gaming experience.

- 4) Rosters               -
============================
Every team in a professional organization has players that make it up. While
some people say everyone is equal, this is not true in the sports world.
Certain players have talents unmatched by others, and that's why superstars
can make a team great, or just bland. Unfortunately, there aren't too many
restrictions from turning a team in NHL 95 to a powerhouse. Regardless, the
following is a list of all the NHL teams, with their players, jersey numbers,
ratings, and positions.

- Jersey Number - Name - Position - Rating -

============================
- 5) Tips/Codes            -
============================
Not everyone can be a master of the mystical sport on the ice. Hockey often
requires strategic moments of knowing when to pass, going for the risky shot,
and sometimes sending out the next line to freshen up your remaining players.
The following section will provide a few tip pointers for specific situations
you'll face in the game. Codes are provided afterwards.
_______________
/Offensive Tips/
----------------------------

    ++ Have a player take the puck up ice. Then, take your player around the
opposing team's goal, and pass it straight out from behind the corner of the
goal. Once the puck is being passed, quickly press C and then C again to
perform the quick one time goal. This is highly effective. As long as you wrap
around the goal, the goalie will still be caught on the other edge of his
goal, leaving about 30% or so wide open. Check out this quick diagram for a
basic example:

                       > > > > > > > Pass down
                       ^    [=====]  |
                       ^    [     ]  |
                       ^      00 \   |
                       0          \  |
                                   \x - Fire towards goal!

    ++ Be careful with your passes. Use your vision to see if there are any
defenders in the path of your directed target. If you want to pass the puck to
someone who has a defender in between them, press A (must not be in offensive
zone). This will execute a drop pass, which is similar to a soft loft. Very
effective for getting height.

    ++ Powerplays are heavily overrated in NHL 95. In most cases, they're
awfully useless. The extra man advantage doesn't last long (due to the quick
winding down of the clock). Passes are quite often intercepted. Simply make 1-
2 passes, then take a pot shot.

_______________
/Defensive Tips/
----------------------------

    ++ I'd recommend letting the computer control your defenders for the most
part, unless you have a clear shot on the opponent. If you notice that the
opposing team is closing in on your goal, you can press B to take control of
the closest defender. Then, charge straight forward and press C to check him
to the ground. If performed correctly, he'll either lose the puck, or be
slowed down heavily. Great for getting a turnover possession. Unfortunately,
there's no way to control your defenders or have them strafe skate backwards.
That's why it's better off that you leave the CPU to do the dirty work for you.

    ++ Take manual control of the goalie by holding down B. Once you have
control, simply dive for the puck by pressing C to make a save. It's almost a
guaranteed stop everytime. Just be careful. Sometimes if you hold down the B
button, and are unaware of your actions, you may move the goalie out of your
net.

    ++ Clear the puck by pressing A in a defensive zone. Always do this on
powerplays, unless you have a clear one-on-one breakaway.

______
/Codes/
----------------------------
Unfortunately, EA Sports didn't toss in too many fun cheats to perform by
yourself. For the most part, NHL 95 is pretty much a realistic hockey game. If
you want to try something new, test out these codes. I'm giving credit to:

http://www.cheatingdome.com/

for these 2 brief cheats:

         {{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}
         $$$$$ Extra Players $$$$$
         {{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}

         *** When you go into the screen to create players, press A + C then
             press START, and you'll get to choose different people. ***

         {{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
         $$$$$ Shorter Periods $$$$$
         {{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

         *** For a much faster game, hold A + C and press START on the mode
             select screen. The game's periods will shorten to 30 seconds
             each. ***

============================
- 6) Common Questions      -
============================
While NHL 95 may not be the top item on your wish list, it certainly brings up
questions about the ancient eras of games. If you look in the past few years,
sports have progressed greatly in terms of popularity, and depth. During the
middle 90s era, many developers were realizing that sports games could be
truly fun if additional elements were placed in. The sport's actual rules,
penalties, and now franchise modes have all modernized above and beyond
expectations. NHL 95 was the building step in the progression of hockey games
as we know it today.

)) Gameplay ((
----------------------------

<< How does this compare to other hockey games on the Genesis? >>

- Unfortunately, I don't have much extensive playing time when it comes to
hockey games for a specific system. I can tell you though that the NHL series
by EA Sports is one of the best you can get for this system, and the time it
was released. NHL 95 increased options for the players which made it more
appealing. Not only that, but it seems to capture a sense of excitement. You
can prowl towards the goal, and then hear the crowd scream in amazement as the
goalie makes a blaring save. These sorts of elements were hardly captured by
sports games back in the early 90s.

<< Are there any new additions/features when compared to NHL 94? >>

- Yes, there's actually quite a few:

      // 1993-94 NHL rosters and updated player ratings
      \\ Practice Mode
      // League Leaders
      \\ Drop (height lofted) passes
      // Block Shots (by defensive players)
      \\ Season Play (huge upgrade)
      // Create a Player
      \\ Player Trades (with approval meter)
      // Fake Shots
      \\ Erasable Seasons

I'd like to thank the following people for their help in making this FAQ
possible:

)) EA Sports (( for producing a life long series of sports games for various
systems. Your approval to continue in the video game industry has shown as
nearly all sports products produced by you are swallowed by the gaming
consumers.

)) CJayC (( for constantly updating GameFAQs, and dedicating his entire life
to it. Takes a lot of effort to keep a site going this long.

)) Cheat Dome (( for the 2 nifty codes listed in the Tips/Codes section.
They're better than nothing in my book.

)) FAQ Contributors Board (( for teaching me how to write guides both
diligently, and effectively.
