_______________________________________________________________________________
There really aren't too many action puzzlers out there aside from the
Wario Land games, so I was pleasantly surprised when I first played Samurai
Kid. Released in Japan in early 2001 by Koei (yes, Koei) and developed by
Biox, Samurai Kid is a prime example of a puzzle game that doesn't have to be
boring. Much like Wario Land 4, your prime concern isn't necessarily staying
alive (though, as in Wario Land 4, you do have hearts), but figuring out the
various puzzles. It all makes for a challenging, thought-provoking game.
Since this *IS* mainly a game of wits, I would seriously advise against
using this guide for the entire duration of the game. Half the enjoyment is
figuring out the puzzles for yourself, and using a guide to finish the entire
game is a waste of the money you spent on it. Nevertheless, I do understand
that some puzzles can be very challenging, and it's way more fun to be able to
move on than to be stuck on a puzzle for days (or years). So, feel free to
use this guide every once in a while when you're REALLY stuck, but do try
solving things on your own, because there's nothing better than that sweet
sense of accomplishment ^_^

_______________________________________________________________________________
A long, long time ago, once upon a time, life was normal in the country
known as Hinomoto.
One day, the Demon King, who wanted to conquer the world, suddenly
appeared and the peaceful Hinomoto found itself under attack. The Demon King
and his many subordinates crossed over from the ten Demon Castles, and just
like that, most of Hinomoto had been captured.
The prince of Hinomoto, Homura Maru, with his companions Hide and Yasu,
set off to regain peace by exterminating the demons...

| III. Frequently Asked Questions |
_______________________________________________________________________________
1) Q. Okay, I'm familiar with the term Katana, but Hyoutan?! Ougi?!? I'm sure
very few people would know what they mean. Heck, what's with the use of
Japanese words in general?
A. To be honest I had no choice but to use the Japanese terms for Samurai
Kid's arsenal. That is, unless you want me to type out Japanese Drinking
Gourd every time I mention the Hyoutan.
As for Japanese words, I'd like to retain the distinctly Japanese feel of
the game. Besides, quite a few things just don't translate well into
English (or, since I know very little Japanese, are too hard to
translate).
2) Q. Speaking of Japanese, a lot of your translations are way off.
A. I don't claim to be a fluent speaker of Japanese. In fact, all I can
really do is _read_ katakana and hiragana, though I can also recognize
kanji that's frequently used in video games (such as fire, water, etc.).
I use eDict or my Japanese-English dictionary for all of my translations,
so if I get something wrong, blame them :)
3) Q. This sounds like an interesting game, but I can't find it anywhere!
A. Samurai Kid was released in early 2001, but only in Japan. It was
released at the end of the Game Boy Color's life cycle, so even then it
was released in relatively limited quantities. No import stores I know
of carry it, so your best bet is to find it on Yahoo Auctions Japan,
which is where I got mine for a super decent price (only 1000 yen!!!).
Apparently there is also a strategy guide available with a retail price
of 1000 yen. I haven't come across it while searching on Yahoo Auctions
Japan, but perhaps Amazon.co.jp may have it. The ISBN is 4-87719-853-9.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gameplay
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Koei, Samurai Kid is a "Puzzle Action Game," and there really
couldn't be any other way to describe Samurai Kid.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Controls
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arsenal
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyoutan - A Japanese drinking gourd. Samurai Kid uses his Hyotan to turn
enemies into blocks by simply hitting them with it. Charging up allows
Samurai Kid to perform a powerful long distance attack.
Katana - What's a Samurai without a Sword? Samurai Kid's Katana allows him to
to slash through enemies, destroying most with a single swipe. Charged up,
it can even destroy some blocks.
Ougi - Fear the power of Samurai Kid's... fan?! Yes, Samurai's really did use
use fans in battle. War Fans were primarily used for defense, such as
parrying an enemy's attack. In this game, however, Samurai Kid doesn't use
an iron-ribbed fan, but a regular folding fan... His Ougi has the strance
ability to lure enemies to him. Strike an enemy with the Ougi and it will
follow him. Charge it up for a long-range tornado attack.

A - Jump to the right until you reach a gate. You should see a blue and
white Trigger nearby. Jump up and hit it with your head to lift the gate.
A timer will also start showing you how much time there is before the gate
closes once again. Red Gates will open for a limited amount of time after
you hit a Trigger (or later, Switch) Head past the gate and right into
the next room.
B - If you missed the picture in the background, it was of Samurai Kid's
Hyoutan. Whenever you see a picture of one of his weapons in the
background, it's usually a hint as to which weapon you should use to solve
the puzzle. In this room, switch to the Hyoutan (by pressing Select) and
use it against the Spear enemy to turn it into a block. You don't have to
do anything with the first enemy, but if you keep heading right you'll see
a Spike-Head floating above a new type of Switch. If you don't know
Japanese, when the Switch is blue it means Cutoff, meaning the path ahead
is blocked. Sure enough, there's another gate. If you try stepping on
the Switch, it will open the gate, but the second you step off, the gate
will shut again. To remedy this, jump up and hit the Spike-Head with your
Hyoutan to turn it into a block. The block will land on the Switch
(turning it red and changing the Japanese to Enter). Blue Gates only
disappear when the Switch is held (usually by a block or enemy). The gate
will stay open, allowing you to head right to the next area.
C - Here we encounter another Red Gate, but there is no Trigger in sight.
Instead, step on the Switch and stay on it until the Red Gate lifts all
the way up. Next, head past it before the Gate comes back down. Jump to
the right (use any weapon to defeat the Bats), and then you may reach a
point where you can't jump high enough. There are two ways to solve this.
Either Hold Up on the Control Pad while you Press A to Jump, or Press B
while you're jumping to do a somersault that will make you go higher.
Continue right and you'll encounter a Spear enemy. Use the Hyoutan to
turn it into a block, then push it all the way to the right. Jump on top
of the block, then do a High Jump or Somersault Jump to reach the next
platform. You should also see a Coin (aka Koban) nearby. Jump from the
highest platform to get it. There are 4 to collect in each stage, though
you won't be able to collect all 4 in this castle until you return with a
Power-Up. Continue on to the next screen.
D - Use your Hyoutan to turn the Spear into a Block, then, instead of having
to push it, try hitting the block with the Hyoutan. This will make the
Block fly towards the direction you hit it, and it won't stop until it hits
something. This is faster than just pushing the block, but remember that
sometimes you MUST push the block. Head past the Blue Gate, then you'll
see a Spike-Head. Turn it into a block with the Hyoutan. Now you have no
choice- you MUST hit it again with the Hyoutan (or Ougi) when it's on the
ground to be able to get it on top of the Switch. After you do so,
continue right to the next room.
E - Head up the ladder, then collect the Large Sushi(not a Donut as Pokémon
would have you believe) to restore some health. Head right, turn the enemy
into a Block (as the picture of Hyoutans in the background suggests), then
hit the Block with your Hyoutan. Head back left and go down the ladder.
Now head right, jump over the spears, and push the Block (or just hit it
with your Hyoutan) on top of the Switch. Head right, jump on the
Trampoline, then climb up the ladder to the next room.
F - Head right and turn the Spear into a Block. You must push the Block
onto the Switch since hitting it will make it go too far. Pushing the
Block onto the Switch activates the Trampoline. Jump to the right and
into the next room.
G - You'll immediately encounter some Cracked Blocks that cannot be
destroyed by normal means. There is a picture of the Sword in the
background, but simply Pressing B isn't enough. Instead, Press and Hold
the B Button to charge up, then when Samurai Kid is flashing, let go of
the B Button to unleash a powerful slash. This will be enough to break
the Cracked Blocks. Repeat as necessary (and be careful of the Bat), and
exit to the next room.
H - Head right and drop down. You'll see a Flying Scroll. Turn it in to
a Block with the Hyoutan, then push it on top of the Switch. Next, head
right and trigger the Trigger. Quickly jump to the right, and when you're
on the second set of Pots, do a High Jump to the left to get the Coin.
Trigger the Trigger again and exit to the right.
I - Climb down the ladder, then head right. Make sure to defeat the Beetle
quickly, or else it will roll into a ball that cannot be defeated. Climb
up the ladder and destroy the Cracked Blocks. Continue to the right and
you'll find a Chest with a Question Mark on it. To open it, simply hit it
with any weapon. A Key will pop out. Walk into it to pick it up. Jump
down to the right and walk into the Locked Blue Gate while you're carrying
the Key to unlock it. Climb up the ladder and go to the next room.
J - Here you'll meet Hide and Yasu. They will heal you and tell you about
a secret room. Continue on to the next room.
K - Head right and hit the trigger to make a ladder appear. Quickly head
left and climb up. Again, hit the trigger on the right to make a ladder
appear, then climb it. Defeat the Beetle and climb up to the next room.
L - Head to the left, kill the Bat and drop down so you're on the same
level as the Trigger on the left. To hit it, you must switch to the Hyotan
and Hold B to charge up. Release B when you're flashing to release a
projectile attack, and it will hit the Trigger. Do a High Jump up past
the gate. Defeat the Bat and head left to the next screen.
M - Do a High Jump up to the ledge on the left, then climb the ladder and
pick up the Heart Vase, which will add another heart to your meter. Climb
down the ladder and jump off the ledge. Switch to the Hyotan and turn the
Spear into a Block, then push it into the space on the left (do NOT hit
it!). Head left and turn the Spike-Head into a Block, which will land on
the other Block you created. Push the Block on top of the Switch. Head
left through the exit.
N - Once you receive the Hyper Stone (you'll receive it after beating this
level), you can re-enter the level and complete this optional task. Since
you don't have it yet, you can skip the next step. Head down the ladder
and deal with the Beetle quickly. Skip the next ladder and push the Large
Block to the left. Head left and go down the ladder.
O - Charge up your Katana to destroy the Cracked Blocks. Pick up the Coin,
then head back up to Room N.
N - If you're coming back from the Hidden Room, Push the Large Block to
the right, then climb up the ladders. Once you're back at the beginning
of the room, step on the Switch to trigger a moving platform. Be careful
of the Bats on the way to the exit.
P - You can hit the Flying Scroll to create a Block to jump on, but you can
also do a High Jump. Collect the Large Sushu to heal yourself, then
climb down the ladder. Jump over the Spikes and hit the Chest to find a
Bomb. Pick up the Bomb, jump over the Spikes again, and throw the Bomb so
that it lands next to the red Bomb Blocks. The best place to throw it
from is in front of the door on the right in the background. Head left
and climb up the ladder. Destroy the Cracked Blocks if you think you need
to go back, but otherwise forget about them and exit to the left.
Q - Switch to the Ougi and hit the Spear to make it follow you. Once it
drops to the lower level, hit it with the Hyotan to turn it into a Block.
Push it on top of the Switch, then jump on the Trampoline. Jump across
the platforms to the left (be wary of the Beetle on the way) and head
into the next room.
R - Defeat the Bat, then charge up the Hyoutan and hit the Trigger to open
the Gate. High Jump up to the ledge. Hit the Chest to obtain a Key, then
bump into the Trigger to open up the gate again so you can go back to the
previous room.
Q - Quickly jump to the right to avoid the Beetle. Use the Key to open the
Blue Gate and climb up the next room.
S - Jump across the Spikes and destroy the Bats on the way. Step on the
Switch to lower the platform, then jump on top of it and ride it up. Jump
to the left to get the Coin, then lower the platform again and exit
right.
* - The entrance to the Boss is in this room, as is a Large Sushi to heal
you before the battle. Grab it and press Up to enter the Boss Door.
Boss : Choujin
Hits : 8
Attacks : Rock Throw - Choujin throws 3 small rocks in your direction.
Leaf Laser - Choujin uses a leaf to shoot a laser at you.
Dive - Choujin dives at you.
Strategy: Choujin will start the battle by jumping up and using his Rock
Throw attack. Avoid it, then be ready to Jump as he Dives at you.
Once he reaches the other end of the screen, he'll use his Rock
Throw again, then come down and shoot 3 Leaf Lasers at you. Avoid
them, then get ready to avoid another barrage of Rocks. He'll dive
again, then follow the same pattern of Rock Throw, Leaf Laser x3,
Rock Throw, Dive. The best times to get in hits are when he's
Diving at you and immediately after he does a Rock Throw or Leaf
Laser. After 6 hits he'll turn red, which only shows that you're
close to beating him. Another 2 hits and he'll go down.
By the way, don't jump over the Whales or else you'll fall off
and lose a Heart.
Info : I don't actually have official names for the bosses, so I've dubbed
this one Choujin, which literally means Birdman.
Boss Room - After you defeat Choujin, pick up the Hyper Stone that appears.
