----------|  1.0:  WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

This file is a review/FAQ/explaination for the Pokemon card
game for the Gameboy, called "Pokemon Card GB".  I'll try to
give as much information as possible.

----------|  2.0:  HISTORY

v2.0             This release of this file:
                   - Too many changes to mention individually

----------|  3.0:  SOME BACKGROUND

I picked up "Pokemon Card GB" at a local game store that
imports Japanese games.  Since I'm in Hawai'i, the game cost
me about $34.95.  You also get a Promotional Card inside of
  it (the promo Kairyuu [Dragonite]).

I do not have a Japanese GB (I have a U.S. one), but the
Japanese cartridge works perfectly.  I believe that the
European GBs have smaller slots, so I don't think the Japanese
cartridge will work.  Oh, and it works perfectly fine with my
aged, original, black and white GB.

----------|  4.0:  THE GAME

Well, it's basically a "Quest" version of the trading card
game.  You start out with a deck of your choosing, from three
available.  And from there, you proceed to collect a series
of eight medals from each of the Club Masters in order to gain
entrance to the Pokemon Dome to fight the "Final Four".

While you do, you will combat lesser people around the Clubs,
in a game of cards.  When you win these matches (and any other
match), you win two booster packs.  There are a total of four
different booster packs, and you win them depending on the
difficulty of the opponent (at least, it appears that way to
me).  Oh, and the cards from the GB version range all of the
way up to the Fossil expansion -- and that includes all of the
promo cards!  Plus, there are a few cards that are only in
this game (denoted with a GB symbol, show on the data sheet
  for the particular Pokemon).

In between some of the battles, you'll encounter your nemesis,
  Rando, in some battles.

  having the eight medals.
The following is an EXTREMELY rough estimate of the overhead
  map.

  4.5:  A Few Hints

Some have asked me how to get started, and what medals to go
for.  Well, after you complete the first tutorial in the
game, Dr. Ooyama will give you a choice of decks to start
  with:

  Hitokage [Charmander] and Friends deck
  Zenigame [Squirtle] and Friends deck
  Fushigidane [Bulbasaur] and Friends deck

Each of those decks gives you the family of that Evolution
(for those Charizard fans, yes, the Hitokage [Charmander] deck
  gives it to you).

You may want to go for the medals in the following order:

Aqua:  This club is, by far, the easiest.  The cards required
to win the general matches are low, so you should spend a
while here to gain a relatively good collection of cards.
Fire:  Well, since you've collected a number of Water cards
from the Aqua club, you should go here.  With all due
respect, you should be able to murder all of the club
member's decks with your water deck.  You should spend some
time here to gain some Fire cards.
Grass:  Since you got some Fire cards at the previous club,
take down the Grass decks here.  However, the club master
is missing!  Simply beat the second lady to the left of the
screen, and she'll tell you that the club master is at Mr.
Ishihara's house.  Go there, and talk to her, then she'll
leave.  Go back to the Grass club, and then you'll be able
    to fight her.
Stone:  Since you have some Grass cards now, go to the Stone
    club.
Elec:  Take your fighting Pokemon deck and nuke them.
Science:  The Science club is a bit hard to classify, since
there are a range of decks.  Just play an opponent for a
few turns to see what they have, then reset the game and
    modify your deck accordingly.
Esper:  The Esper club can be ANNOYING, to say the least.
Your best bet is a Colorless Pokemon deck, with Korattas
[Rattatas], Purins [Jigglypuffs], etc., that have a
    resistance to Psychic.
Battle:  This club should be saved for last, because you need
to walk around to find the members to beat.  When you first
talk to the club master, he'll ask you to find his members.
Basically, they are in the other club lounges.  Find and
defeat all three of them, and then you'll be able to fight
the club master.  The three that I found were in the Fire,
Grass, and Stone clubs, but it may be random.

----------|  5.0:  BUILDING A DECK

When you select the Deck option from the menu, the first
screen that you will see is a list of four items.  This is
your deck listing.  At first, only the first slot will be
full, because you only have one deck.  There will also be a
hand full of cards next to it.  This hand icon indicates that
it is the deck that you are currently using.  Press up and
down to choose a deck, and press 'A' to continue, or 'B' to
  cancel.

You will then get a sub-menu at the bottom of the screen.

  Edit Deck                 Use Deck
  Name Deck                 Cancel

Selecting 'Use Deck' will make that deck the one you use
  during the card battles.

  -->  Creating/Editing a Deck

When you select 'Edit Deck', you will see a listing of the
card types across the top of the screen, plus a listing of
the cards in the large window.

Select the card type you wish, and either press 'A', or press
'Down' to search through the list of cards.  Pressing 'Right'
on a card will increase the use of that card in your deck
by 1.  There will be two values next to the card (i.e. 3/20).
The first number is the number of that card you are using in
the current deck.  The second value is the number of them that
you actually have left in your collection (this number may
lessen as you make other decks as well).  Pressing 'Left'
will reduce your usage by 1.  Remember that you can only have
4 of any card in a deck.

If you wish to see what a card does, press 'A' when on it.
You can then press 'Up' to see the previous card on the list,
or 'Down' to see the next card on the list.

Pressing 'Start' when selecting a card type will show you a
list of the cards that you currently have in the deck.

When you are done creating a deck, press 'B' and a menu will
  pop up.

  Listing                  Edit                Name
  Save Deck                Erase               Stop

If you try to save a deck, and you are under or over the
sixty card limit, it will not let you save it.

----------|  6.0:  THE COMPUTER

In the various clubs, and at other locations, you may notice a
computer sitting on the corner.  This a 'Record' computer, I
guess, and you can use it to check your progress.

Examine it, and you will get a menu.

Card Album       A listing of different cards you have
Read Manual      Read one of Professor Ooyama's manuals
Glossary         A glossary of terms in the game
Printout         Used with the GB printer (which I don't have)
  Turn Off         Cancel

  -->  Card Album

You will get a listing of 5 items:

  1.  Pokemon (Koroshiamu)
  2.  Mystery of Evolution
  3.  () Pokemon
  4.  Pokemon Lab
  5.  Promotional Cards

Select any one of them with the 'A' button, or 'B' to cancel.
You can them cycle through the different cards that you have,
and see which card numbers that you need.

  -->  Read Mail

There is certain mail that Dr. Ooyama will enable you to read
when you complete various portions of the game.  The interval
is usually when you gain a new Medal.

If you haven't read a mail yet, it will be blinking.  Select
it with the 'A' button, and Dr. Ooyama will give you a spiel.
After that, you will get a pack of cards, sometimes two.

After you finish the game for the first time, mails 13-15 will
be blinking, and you can claim the cards from there.

  -->  Glossary

A glossary of terms in the game.  Since you've already played
the 'real' card game, you don't really need to see it, now do
  you?

----------|  7.0:  BATTLE

So, you think you're ready for battle, huh?  If you've played
the real card game before, you need to know a few things.

  1.  There is no "Mulligan" rule.  This means that if you or
your opponent does not draw a basic Pokemon in their
opening hand, the opponent does not get to draw the
two extra cards (NOTE:  I have had my opponent reshuffle
up to five times, and I still have not draw any extra
cards.  There goes most of my Decking Deck idea down the
      drain...)
  2.  Not all of the battles are for six Prizes ("Side Cards"
in the Japanese game).  Many of the easier battles are
only for two Prizes.  The others are four prizes.  The
battles with the Club Masters and the Grand Masters ARE
      for six Prizes, though.

Usually when you talk to the people in the club room (north
of the entrance), they will ask you if you wish to fight
them.  Selecting 'Yes' will take you into the battle scene.

  The initial set-up is self-explanatory.

If each player draws a basic Pokemon, then you will be taken
to your 'Hand List' screen.  Select a Pokemon to put as
your Active Pokemon with the 'A' button.  From there, you
can either choose the first option from the small menu to
select it, or choose the second option to look at it.  If you
change your mind, hit 'B'.  Then, if you wish to put any
Pokemon on your bench, select them in the same way.  If you
don't wish to, or you run out of Pokemon to put down, press
  the 'B' button.

A coin will begin to flip.  Press 'A' or 'B' to begin the
toss.  'Heads' means that you will go first.  'Tails', and
  your opponent goes first.

During your turn, you will draw a card, then be given the
  'Game-Play' menu.

  Hand              Check              Retreat
  Attack            Special            Done

  -->  Hand

From here, you are given your 'Hand List' to play Pokemon,
  Trainer cards, Energy cards, etc.

  -->  Attack
Self explanatory.  Select which attack you wish to use from
  that menu.

  -->  Check

This will give you a sub-menu.

  All Cards                  Glossary
  Your Cards                 Opponent's Cards

     ----->  All Cards

This will give you a view of both player's Active Pokemon
and Benched Pokemon.  Your Pokemon will be highlighted by
default.  Pressing up or down will highlight either your
opponent's Pokemon or your own.  Pressing 'A' will select
it, or press 'B' to cancel.

     ----->  Your Cards

This will bring up another menu.

     Your Pokemon               Your Hand
     Your Discard Pile

        ------->  Your Pokemon

You can cycle through your own Pokemon.

        ------->  Your Discard Pile

You can cycle through your Discard Pile.

        ------->  Your Hand

You can cycle through the cards in your hand.

  -->  Special

Use one of your Pokemon's Pokemon Power from here.

  -->  Retreat

If you select this, choose which Energy cards to be discarded.
Or press 'B' to cancel.  If you do retreat, then select a
benched Pokemon to be your active Pokemon.

  -->  Done

If you don't want to do anything (or can't), select this.

----------|  8.0:  IMAKUNI?

(Yes, the question mark is part of the guy's name.)

  "Hmm?  Wh-What do you want?
Eh?  Me?  You don't know who I am?

I am the Super Musical Star, Imakuni? !  Well?"

  -----

Imakuni? is a little guy in mouse-like ears, who usually
appears in the left-hand room of the clubs, on the left side
of the bookcase.  You'll know he's there, because the music
will change to a VERY weird beat.

Imakuni?'s not a very hard opponent to beat.  He uses
obscure Pokemon in his deck, such as Kamonegi [Farfetch'd],
Yadon [Slopoke], Yadoran [Slobro], Kodakku [Psyduck] and
others.  Unless there is some twist of fate, you will probably
defeat him by making him run out of Pokemon rather than win
  all of your Prizes.

The first two times that you win against him, you will get
one of each booster pack.  The third time, you will get the
  Imakuni? promotional card.

The fourth and fifth times, you will get 1 of each booster
pack again.  The sixth time, you will get the Imakuni?
promotional card again.  After that, any time that you beat
him, you will get the booster packs.

In another note, Imakuni? is one of three singers in a
Japanese band, called "Suzukisan".  If you purchase the
"Pokemon Best Collection" CD, he sings on it.

----------|  9.0:  THE TUTORIAL GAME

At the beginning of the game, you will go through a tutorial

  Nothing               Cancel

----------|  10.0:  THE FINAL FOUR

You've got all eight medals.  You've got plenty of cards.
You're kicked everyone's butts up until now.  Now you're
  ready for the 'Final Four'.

Open the doors in the Pokemon Dome, and walk up the small
set of stairs.  You've given one last chance to back-out, or
  prepare.

If you decide to continue, you will fight the Pokemon Masters
one at a time.  In between, they will ask you if you wish to
view your status.  DO IT.  You will be able to change your
deck and save.  This is a very good thing.

First up will be Hiroko, the 'Fire Queen'.  She will be using
(surprise) a Fire deck, with Charmanders, Growlithes, and
the GB-exclusive game, Faiyaa [Moltres].  Pull out your Water
deck, and she should fall relatively easily.

Here is the Water deck that I used against her:

  21 Water Energy
  4 Double Colorless Energy
  3 Zenigame (Squirtle)
  2 Kameeru (Wartortle)
  4 Paokuu (Seel)
  3 Jugon (Dewgong)
  4 Hitodeman (Staryu)
  3 Sutaamii (Starmie)
  3 Koikingu (Magikarp)
  2 Gyaradosu (Gyrados)
  2 Rapurasu (Lapras)
  2 Professor Ookido (Professor Oak)
  1 Masaki (Bill)
  1 Energy Removal
  2 Monster Ball
  1 Gust of Wind
  2 Potion
  1 Full Heal

Next up is Steve and his Lightning deck.  Some of the cards
  include Voltorbs and Electabuzzes.

Here is the Fighting deck I used against him:

  21 Fighting Energy
  4 Double Colorless Energy
  3 Wanrikii (Machop)
  4 Sekumuraa (Hitmonlee)
  4 Ebikuraa (Hitmonchan)
  1 Kamonegi (Farfetch'd)
  2 Rakkii (Chansey)
  2 Professor Ookido (Professor Oak)
  3 Masaki (Bill)
  1 Pokemon Trader
  2 Monster Ball
  4 PlusPower
  1 Gust of Wind
  4 Potion
  3 Super Potion
  1 Full Heal

Now you're up against Kanekouji and his Water deck.  Expect
Lapras and Seels, along with Furiizaa [Articuno].

Here is the Lightning deck I used against him:

  21 Lightning Energy
  4 Double Colorless Energy
  3 Pikachu (LV.14)
  2 Raichuu (LV.45)
  3 Koiru (LV.13) (Magnemite)
  2 Reakoiru (LV.35) (Magneton)
  3 Erebuu (LV.35) (Electabuzz)
  2 Sandaa (LV.40) (Zapdos)
  4 Rakkii (Chansey)
  3 Garuura (Kangashkan)
  2 Professor Oookido (Professor Oak)
  4 Masaki (Bill)
  1 Pokemon Trader
  1 Energy Removal
  1 Monster Ball
  1 Gust of Wind
  2 Potion
  1 Full Heal

Last up is Ryudo and his Dragon deck.  The cards include
Charmanders, Dratinis, Magikarps and Kangashkans.  I used
the same Lightning Deck as above, and won pretty easily.

If this is your first time finishing the game, you will
fight your nemesis, Rando, before going into the Winner's
Gate.  Otherwise, you can do through the Winner's Gate.

There will be a pedestal and a card floating on it.  You can
get it if you wish, but if you walk behind the pedestal,
you'll see a computer.  If you access it, you can see some of
the promotional cards that were used in the decks of the Final
  Four.

Afterward, pick up the card.  If this is your first time
finishing the game, you'll get four promotional cards.  If
you finish the game again, you'll get one of them again.  The
next time, you'll get the second one, and so on.  After that,
whenever you finish the game, you'll get nothing for your
  trouble.

----------|  11.0:  GAMEBOY-EXCLUSIVE CARD SPOILER

----------|  12.0:  PROMOTIONAL CARD SPOILER

Promotional cards are gained in various ways during your
Quest.  Most of them are gained by trading cards to various
people.  Some others are gained after card battles.  It is
also important to note that it appears that you can only
get two of any particular promotional card through normal
game play.  However, you may be able to get them by trading
with a friend through the Link Cable.

Getting the promotional cards also seems to be time-dependant.
The first time that I played through the game, some of the
promotional cards would be one place.  But the second time
that I played through, some were in the same place, and others
were in DIFFERENT places than before!  So, I have tried to
compile a list of the possible locations to get the
  promotional cards:

  -----|  Mr. Ishihara

Mr. Ishihara's cards seem to be one of the constants that
  you can get.

The first time, he'll ask for a Pikushii [Clefable] in
exchange for a Surfing Pikachu (the one with the ocean in the
  background).

The second time, he'll ask for a Metamon [Ditto] in exchange
  for a Flying Pikachu.

The third time, he'll want a Rakkii [Chansey] for the other
Surfing Pikachu (the one with Mt. Fuji in the background).

  -----|  Aqua Club

There is a girl at the table that will want a Rapurasu
  [Lapras] for an Windii [Arcanine].

  -----|  Elec Club

Near the entrance, and the bottom, is a man who wants an
Erebuu [Electabuzz] in exchange for a promo Erebuu
  [Electabuzz].

  -----|  Stone Club

There is a man sitting at the right side of the table in the
lounge.  Ever now and then, he'll ask you to give him a card
(usually, these are uncommons).  Do it.  Eventually, since
you've been so nice to him, he'll give you a promo card.

  -----|  Esper Club

There is an old man all of the way to the left in the lounge.
After you get the Esper Medal, he'll give you a promo Mewtwo.

  -----|  Fire Club

There is a young boy near the top of the lounge that wants
Energy cards.  If you say yes, he'll take all of your
remaining Energy cards (the ones that aren't in your decks),
and tell you about a promo card location.  Go to the
window/pictureframe behind him at the top of the lounge, and
examine it.  You'll get a promo there.

Either way, if you give him the card or not, he leaves.  It's
best to leave him be until late in the game.  And, no, if you
don't give him the Energy, you don't get the promo.

  -----|  Rando

Whenever you encounter Rando in your travels, and you beat
him (this will be twice), you'll get a promo card each time.
The first one is usually a Purin [Jigglypuff].

  -----|  The Challenge Cup

Go to the Challenge Hall and play in the tournament.  Each
time that you win the tournament, you'll get a promo card.
After you finish the Challenge Cup for the first time, go
back after every medal that you get.  Sometimes a new
  tournament will start.

  -----|  Imakuni?

See the Imakuni? section in order to get his promo card.

----------|  14.0:  OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST

  1.  Some Trainer cards have different names than their English
counterparts.  For example, the card "Bill" is "Masaki".  Even
more strange, the card "Lass" is actually called "Miniskirt"!
