I. 2. FOREWORD
Welcome to Portable MK's definitive FAQ/Move List for the GameBoy COLOR
version of MORTAL KOMBAT 4. This document contains everything you will need to
complete and get the most out of the game.
To ensure accurate comprehension of the material, this document was written
assuming you do not have any prior knowledge of any other versions of the game.
I have personally confirmed and thoroughly tested everything in this document,
and guarantee everything is correct to the best of my ability. Note that this
document was written for the North American release of the game. Your version
may be different depending on its region.
Some parts of this document may contain errors. If that is so, then please see
the credits section (chapter "VII. EPILOGUE", section "2. CREDITS/SOURCES") to
find if the error is from a source other than the author. Some parts of this
document have been directly copied from other sources (all of which are listed
in the credits section), thus, any errors were intentionally included.
This document was written with Courier New 10 point font with 79 characters per
line, and is best viewed at those specifications. This document contains
characters which your computer may not be able to display. If that is so, then
I would strongly recommend switching to a computer that can view them.

II. 1. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Q) I cannot get moves to work. What am I doing wrong?
A) You are likely not following the input directions as stated in the sub-
section "Reading Comprehension" in chapter "III. GAME BASICS", section
"2. OF PLAYING".
2. Q) Why are there screen shots of Johnny Cage, Sonya, and Kai on the back of
the package?
A) I conjecture that the programmers originally had Johnny Cage instead of
Quan Chi, Kai instead of Liu Kang, and Sonya instead of Tanya, in the
game, but later decided changed their graphics so that they could be the
current characters. If you look on the back of the package, you will see
pictures of: the old select screen (with the original characters), Kai
and Sonya fighting, and Sonya and Sub-Zero fighting. They may have
changed them to make the story make more sense, or because of the
characters' popularity.
3. Q) Are there any Bonebreakers?
A) In the Arcade version of MORTAL KOMBAT 4, characters could perform a
regular move known as a "Bone Breaker", while adjacent to their opponent.
On page ten of the MORTAL KOMBAT 4 (GameBoy COLOR) instruction manual it
states:
"Moves used during close-in kombat situations are the Elbow, the
Knee, the Bonebreaker and the Throw."
Because they not only mention Bonebreakers, but the Elbow and Knee as
well, I reason that this must have been a simple copying error. Because
other platform versions of MORTAL KOMBAT 4 have those moves, they
probably just copied that information out of the instruction manuals for
those versions. I am positive that none of those moves are in the
GameBoy COLOR version.
4. Q) Could you clear up the Reiko confusion? Who is he?
A) Reiko has become an extremely ambiguous character. Basically, in the
Mortal Kombat videogames, Reiko is Shao Kahn. In the Mortal Kombat show,
Reiko is another person. For a good site that fully explains the Reiko
confusion, see:
http://www.mk5.org/tabmok99/reikokahn.html
5. Q) Can I use a GameGenie with MORTAL KOMBAT 4?
A) The GameGenie can only be used with the GameBoy and Super GameBoy. The
GameGenie will not work on a GameBoy COLOR playing a color game such as
MORTAL KOMBAT 4. I do not have a section in this document about
GameGenie codes because there are no known good ones.

III. 1. GETTING STARTED
------------------------------ Game Introduction ------------------------------
MORTAL KOMBAT 4 was first released on the Arcade platform in 1997. Later that
year the "home system" versions-- such as the GameBoy COLOR version-- of it
were released. The GameBoy COLOR version of MORTAL KOMBAT 4 is based on the
Arcade version.
Platforms
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
MORTAL KOMBAT 4 is a "backwards compatible" game pak, meaning that it can play
on both the GameBoy COLOR and the original GameBoy. It even takes advantage of
the Super GameBoy's features by offering one special boarder and a few colors.
So, there are three deferent platforms-- each with their pros and cons-- that
the game can be played on. All three platforms emulate the game virtually
identically. See chapter "VII. MISCELLANEOUS", "1. PLATFORM FEATURES" to learn
which platforms offer which features.
Game Setup
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Two players fight each other in a one-on-one match to the death. Whoever wins
two rounds first wins the match. The matches are comprised of all the rounds
against an opponent. A player wins by either defeating their opponent, or by
having the most amount of life left at the end of the round. If there is a
tie, then the computer player is declared the winner.
Each character is armed with various unique special moves to aid them in the
fights. If a player wins two rounds, without letting the time run out, "FINISH
[HIM/HER]" will be displayed, and they will have the option of performing a
finishing move on their defeated opponent.
Characters
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are three types of characters in the game: regular, secret, and boss.
Regular characters include: Reiko, Tanya, Quan Chi, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang,
Scorpion, and Fujin. Reptile is the only secret character, and Shinnok is the
only boss character. The regular characters are immediately selectable from
the start of the game. Codes or cheats are required to enable the secret and
boss characters. Depending on which tower you select, you will fight either
four, six, or eight regular characters, and then battle the boss, Shinnok. The
secret character, Reptile, will not be fought unless a code or cheat is
entered.
------------------------------- Getting Started -------------------------------
Character Selection
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After turning on the game and waiting through the legal screens, you will come
to the MORTAL KOMBAT 4 Title screen. Displayed at the bottom of the screen is,
"PRESS START"; do so to be presented with the Character Selection screen. (If
you wait at the MORTAL KOMBAT 4 Title screen too long, the game will begin
showing fight demos. Press the "Start" button, or wait, to return to the
screen.)

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
While on the Character Selection screen, use the D-Pad to move the flashing
frame onto the character you wish to play as. You will notice that the center
square is not selectable; that is because it is of a secret character. To
learn how to play as him and other characters, see the individual character
sections in chapter "IV. CHARACTERS" or chapter "VI. SECRETS/CODES". When you
are ready, press the "Start" button, or simply wait, to continue with your
selection. The duration of time for selecting your character is limited to
about eighteen seconds.
Not depicted in the diagram above, the nine squares have pictures of the
selectable characters' faces. I have typed in letters to show where each
character is located on the screen. Use the Legend below to find who is where.
..... LEGEND .......................
: A = Raiden F = Sub-Zero :
: B = Quan Chi G = Reiko :
: C = Fujin H = Tanya :
: D = Liu Kang I = Scorpion :
: E = Reptile :
:..................................:
Tower Selection
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After selecting your character, you will be taken to the Tower Selection
screen. There are three columns, or "towers"; each one represents a level of
difficulty. The middle tower, "Master", has nine characters to battle; the
left tower, "Warrior", has seven; and the right tower, "Novice", has five. The
taller the tower, the more aggressive the computer player will be. Use Left
and Right on the D-Pad to select your desired tower. The one selected is the
one with its name displayed under it. See the following sub-section to see who
and where you will fight on each tower. Either press the "Start" button, or
wait, to select your desired tower. You have about eight seconds to choose.
Tower Progress
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After the Tower Selection screen, you will see your selected tower up-close,
with all of your opponents' faces on it in the order that you will fight them
in. This is the Tower Progress screen. Between each match, this screen will
appear to show your progress on the tower. You will begin at the bottom of the
tower and work your way up after each match won.
Kombat Codes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
After viewing the Tower Progress screen, you will come to the Kombat Code
screen. In the center of the screen is a row of six boxes with pictures on
them. The boxes each contain a set of ten pictures, which if arranged in
certain sequences, will activate codes. If you have entered a valid code, the
name of the code you have entered will be displayed afterwards. For more
information and all of the codes, see chapter "VI. SECRETS/CODES", section "2.
KOMBAT CODES". The duration of time for inputting codes is limited to about
eighteen seconds. After the Kombat Code screen the match will begin.
-------------------------------- Match Aspects --------------------------------
After completing everything in the previous sub-section, you will begin the
match. Below is what the screen looks like and what each meter represents.

Powerbar
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Powerbars display the amount of that player's remaining health. Damaging
attacks will reduce the Powerbar. When a Powerbar is completely depleted, that
player will lose the round. Each players' name is displayed on their Powerbar.
If you win with a full Powerbar, "FLAWLESS VICTORY" will be displayed.
Dragon Symbol
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Not pictured in the diagram, after a round is won, a small circle-- which is
supposed to be a dragon symbol-- appears between the winner's Powerbar and the
Timer. This shows how many rounds a character has won in a match
Timer
¯¯¯¯¯
The Timer displays how much game time you have left before the round is up.
Each round lasts 99 seconds. If the time runs out, "OUT OF TIME" will be
displayed, and the player with the most life on their Powerbar wins. If both
players have the same amount of life left, then the computer player wins by
default.
Run Meter
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The Run Meter regulates the amount of time you may run; each time a player
Runs, it will decrease. When it is depleted, that player will not be able to
Run again until it fills back up-- which it will do automatically.
Game Text
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
When certain things occur, text will appear to let you know what is happening.
------------------------------ Match Environment ------------------------------
The Stages
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The stages are the backgrounds that are fought at each match. There are five
different stages; they are fought at in no specific order.
Correlations
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Each tower has a set order of which characters you will fight. The diagram
below shows who you will fight on each position on the towers.

III. 2. OF PLAYING
---------------------------- Reading Comprehension ----------------------------
Throughout this document, there will be terms that you must know to understand
the material-- this sub-section covers those terms. I have spelled out all of
the input controls to prevent confusion and to simplify things.
Input Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• All moves can only be executed on the ground.
• While inputting the controls for special moves, you cannot press or hold any
other buttons, or the move will not occur.
D-Pad Directions
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
"Up", "Down", "Towards", and "Away" all refer to directions on the D-Pad.
"Towards" and "Away" are either Left or Right on the D-Pad. Which one it is
depends on which one will move you either towards or away from your opponent.
Inputting
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There are two ways that moves will be executed: "," and "+". If you wait too
long between pressing the buttons, the move will not work.
"," : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away, 'B' button"
Description: First, press and release Down, then press and release
Away, and finally, press the "B" button.
"+" : Example: "Input controls: Down, Away + 'B' button"
Description: First, press and release Down, then press Away and
the "B" button at the same time.
-------------------------------- Regular Moves --------------------------------
Standing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Punch: "B" button
Kick: "A" button
Roundhouse: Towards + "A" button
Throw: Hold "B" button 1 second, release.
Notes: You must be adjacent to your opponent.
Run: Towards + "B" button + "A" button
Notes: When the input is executed, you will often perform a Roundhouse
before Running. This glitch cannot be avoided.
Block: "Start" button
Crouching Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Uppercut: Down + "B" button
Punch: Down + Towards + "B" button
Kick: Down + "A" button
Sweep: Away + "A" button
Block: Down + "Start" button
Aerial Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Jump Punch: Up + "B" button
Jump Kick: Up + "A" button
--------------------------- Special/Finishing Moves ---------------------------
Special Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Each character has their own unique set of special moves. All moves can only
be performed one at a time unless otherwise noted.
Finishing Moves
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
If two rounds are won, and the second round is won without letting the Timer
expire, "FINISH [HIM/HER]!" will be displayed, and the winner will get about
five seconds to perform a finishing move. This small period of time is known
as "finishing time"; that is the only time that finishing moves can only be
performed. Each character has only one finishing move: a Fatality. If you
injure your opponent, the finishing time will end. You will not have the
option to perform a finishing move against Shinnok.
Fatality : Description: A small black and white video about three seconds
long is shown of the winner finishing off their opponent in a
brutal or gruesome way.
Notes: N/A
----------------------------- General Strategies ------------------------------
I can offer no real individual strategy for the characters because the computer
plays with all of them the same way. Since the computer player has basically
no real strategy or intelligence, following the tips/notes below should be
enough to guarantee easy victories.
Tips/Notes
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
• The computer player usually attacks in short bursts.
• The computer player will never back away.
• Be aggressive; the computer player does not use any real strategy. You can
easily win by simply attacking with multiple Jump Kicks, Roundhouses, or
Sweeps.
• When your opponent gets close, Sweep them.
• When you want to knock your opponent away, perform a Roundhouse.
• If your opponent performs a projectile move, simply Block it.

In this chapter, I will use the descriptions, "Punch", "Kick", and "Block",
instead of, "'B' button", "'A' button", and "'Start' button". This is to
prevent confusion and to simplify things.

VI. 4. GLITCHES
The following are all the known useful and interesting glitches in the game.
They are listed in ascending order of usefulness and amusement.
Fatality Shinnok
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Normally, you do not have the option of performing a Fatality against Shinnok,
but if you beat him without earning a "FLAWLESS VICTORY", then quickly execute
your character's Fatality input controls, they will perform their Fatality.
Easy Fatality
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
With Scorpion, win two rounds, and on the second round, finish off your
opponent by performing his Spear. For some reason it will cause him to perform
his Fatality.
More Finishing Time
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
With Sub-Zero, during finishing time, each time you perform his Iceball move it
resets the time. Thus, you can give yourself as much time as you wish to
finish your opponent.
No Sprite Collision
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Occasionally the sprite collision will stop working, thus, enabling you to move
off of the screen and also through your opponent! There is no known way to
make this occur consistently, but you will more than likely experience this
while playing through the game-- it cannot be avoided.
Reptile's Foot
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
When Reptile performs an Uppercut it looks like he has a growth on his front
foot.

VII. 1. PLATFORM FEATURES
MORTAL KOMBAT 4 is "backwards compatible", meaning that it can not only play on
the GameBoy COLOR, but the original GameBoy as well. It has features for three
different platforms: GameBoy COLOR, GameBoy, and Super GameBoy. Each one has
its pros and cons, which are listed below. The differences do not affect any
of the information from the previous parts of this document.
GameBoy : Pros: Most colorful system to play on (it offers about fifteen
COLOR colors at a time).
Cons: Cannot use GameGenie.
GameBoy : Pros: GameGenie compatible.
Cons: Everything is gray, making it difficult to see some things.
Super : Pros: One boarder, some colors, and GameGenie compatible.
GameBoy Cons: Makes the Fatalities look choppy.
_______________________________________________________________________________
VII. 2. HACK OF MK3?
Oddly enough, much evidence suggests that MORTAL KOMBAT 4 for the GameBoy COLOR
is simply a hacked version of the previous game in the series, MORTAL KOMBAT 3.
That is the best explanation for the following oddities:
• Same graphics: The Character Selection screen, Tower Selection screen,
Tower Progress screen, Kombat Code screen, and Match screen all resemble the
screens from MK3.
• The Kombat codes' combinations and pictures on the boxes match MK3's.
• Special moves from MK3 will appear when performing certain moves while using
either GameShark "Mimic" code. A good example is when you mimic Shinnok,
play as Sub-Zero, and enter the following input controls: Down, Towards,
Kick. It will cause Sektor's Missile move from MK3 to appear.
