While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and
effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your
appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the
donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping
me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated,
and are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. If you do
decide you'd like to donate, please send the donations through PayPal at the
e-mail address listed below. Thank you so very much for considering this!!
[email protected]
By the way, this is also my contact e-mail, so if you want to contribute
something to this or any of my other FAQs, or have a question to ask about one
of them, go ahead and use this e-mail.

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the GameBoy Color game known
as Hole in One Golf. This particular game is one of a large number of games
that try to emulate the sporting game of ... well, as you can guess, golf.
..
That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

Modes of the Game
-----------------
There are three modes in which you can play. In consecutive order:
- Tour, a series of matches across several holes of golf.
- Stroke Play, a one-player mode designed around having the least number of
strokes across a game of golf.
- Link, which allows you to play a multiplayer version of this game so long as
this second player has a GameBoy/GameBoy Color/GameBoy Player linked to your
console, and also has a Hole in One Golf game cartridge.
--------------------
Generalized Gameplay
--------------------
Firstly, we'll cover golf club stats. These are slightly adjusted from the
stats in the game from actual experience when playing.
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
| Golf Club Names | Approximate Range | Approximate Minimum |
| | on Grass Turf | Distance on Grass |
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
| 1W (One Wood or Driver) | 260 yards | 45 yards |
| 3W (Three Wood) | 240 yards | 35 yards |
| 5W (Five Wood) | 215 yards | 30 yards |
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
| 2I (Two Iron) | 210 yards | 35 yards |
| 3I (Three Iron) | 195 yards | 33 yards |
| 4I (Four Iron) | 180 yards | 30 yards |

| 7I (Seven Iron) | 140 yards | 23 yards |
| 8I (Eight Iron) | 115 yards | 20 yards |
| 9I (Nine Iron) | 90 yards | 15 yards |

| PW (Putting Wedge) | 110 yards | 15 yards |
| SW (Sand/Bunker Wedge) | 70 yards | 15 yards |
| PT (Putter) | 25 yards | 1 yard |
O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O
When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This
will include wind speed and direction, par (base level of shots), distance to
the hole in yards (1 yard is a little under 1 meter), shot number, player
score, and a few other things.
You will begin with an overhead view of the hole. You can press B and A to
alternate between views of the putting green and the tee-off spot,
respectively. You can use the D-Pad to move the view around as you wish.
Press A at the tee-off spot to begin.
Use Left/Right on the D-Pad to begin choosing your golf club; keep in mind of
the stats above, as well as the wind direction. Also use Up/Down on the D-Pad
to adjust the red marker on the main screen, which is the direction in which
you want to shoot.
Press the A Button to continue. You will see a segmented power meter at the
bottom. Press the A Button to continue when the silver arrow below it points to
the desired power - the further right, the more power, and therefore more
distance you'll reach.
Once the A Button has been pressed, the crosshairs on the golf ball will move
around. You have to press A to stop the cursor. Depending on where the cursor
is in relation to the dead-center of the ball, you'll get a number of effects:
- Higher up, to induce topspin, making the ball go farther
- Lower down, to induce backspin, making the ball stop easier or roll backward
- To the left, to make the ball go to the right
- To the right, to make the ball go left
- Dead center, to make the ball go straight and normal
Press the A Button to confirm your spin setting on the ball (the crosshairs
thing) and the ball will be shot. You will watch it, then get to shoot again
as is needed.
This cycle will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole.
It gets a bit more specialized there.
Firstly, take a look at the arrows on the ground - they represent the terrain
of the green. Groups of arrows pointing in a direction show that the ground is
going down from there, like going down a hill. You need to work that in into
your shooting angle.
Here, the shooting process is similar, except you can only use the putter, and
there is no use of the spin/hook/slice thing (the crosshairs on the golf ball).
There are usually eighteen holes played throughout the course of a
match, and in a way similar to this.
---------------
Scoring Details
---------------
Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it
ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your
score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you
gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.
The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water
hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad
shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For
example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you
take your third and not the second.
At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your
score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by
going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or
bad.
In this game, your overall score is what determines if you win. If you were to
have a better score on 10 of 18 holes than your opponent, but, overall, he beat
you by three shots, then your opponent wins, for that is how stroke-play works.
To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:
O----------------O-----------------O
| Name of Shot | Score Changes |
O----------------O-----------------O
| Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 |
| Albatross | -3 |
| Eagle | -2 |
| Birdie | -1 |
| Par | ±0 |
| Bogey | +1 |
| Double Bogey | +2 |
| Triple Bogey | +3 |
