"Pleasantly surprised" is the only thing that comes across when I think
of this game. There was nothing new at the usual video game stores so I
decided to take a chance and rent this little game here. And then I
thought "hey, why not make a guide for it" and so, um, here's the guide.

--------------------------------------------
"What the heck is the Game and Watch?"
--------------------------------------------

This little Nintendo love-child was a watch which also played a single
primitive video game. Supervised by Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi
and developed by Gumpei Yokoi (also the creator of Metroid) in the early
1980s, it sold obscene amounts in Japan. Hiroshi Yamauchi was not truly
satisfied with the sales (thank God) and so Gumpei Yokoi went on to
release the GameBoy to the world in 1989.

1. REVISION HISTORY
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, June 20th, 2002  -  Version 1.1

Back from the dead...updated the contributor information and legal
section and prettied up the format. That's about it...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, September 8th, 2001  -  Version 1.0

This was pretty pointless. I have completely finished the guide -- and
in record time. It's done and spent. I'm not going to get any email on
it anyway, so THE END!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. ALL ABOUT THE "STAR SYSTEM"
------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Game and Watch Gallery 2 there are five classic mini-games for
you to play: Chef, Donkey Kong, Helmet, Parachute, and Vermin. Anyone
could play these games. I could play these games with a one arm and a
blindfold on. Well maybe not with the blindfold on, but definitely with
one arm. But that's not exactly the point of them. The object is to play
one of these games as LONG as possible using your pitiful stock of three
lives. Or as the game calls it "chances."

While playing a game you will in a typical fashion score points, and
after scoring 200 points you will be awarded a star. It's possible to
win a total of five stars on every game. Which obviously is getting over
1000 points...quite tricky to get really high scores.

Every game has a classic and modern version, easy and hard difficulty
settings. If you earn the five stars while in the modern version of a
game you can access Star Mode, AKA the super hard difficulty. The more
total stars you have accumulated across all the games, the more secret
stuff you can access in the gallery. More of that in the "Gallery Mode"
section of this FAQ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. PLAYING DUH GAMES
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what this guide is all about -- the games. I will go over tips
and strategies for every game. This includes going over both classic and
modern versions. The classic mode has easy and hard difficulties, while
the modern versions of course have easy, hard, and Star Mode.

************************************************************************
                          CHEF (CLASSIC MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Every time you catch a piece of falling food.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
This game gets hectic in quite a hurry! It's not really my favorite
though. Depending on whether you picked easy or hard mode, there will be
two or three chefs -- each tossing assortments of food at you. Steer
your character back and forth using the frying pan in it's hands to keep
the food aloft. The objective is to NOT let ANY of the food touch the
floor. If you do, you loss one of your lives as a "miss" and some weird
mouse takes the piece of food.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - Get 200 points to erase a miss.

2. - Watch out for that dang cat on the left side of the screen!
Occasionally it might catch a hot dog on his fork. Watch the cat like a
hawk, because when he retracts the fork the hot dog will fall.

************************************************************************
                          CHEF (MODERN MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left - Move to the Left
Right - Move to the Right
A & B - Turn direction

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Every time you catch a piece of falling food.
1 Point = Feed the Yoshi a piece of uncooked food.
2 Points = Feed the Yoshi a medium-rare cooked egg.
4 Points = Feed the Yoshi a medium-rare cooked sausage or steak.
7 Points = Feed the Yoshi a medium-rare cooked fish or drumstick.

5 Points = When Yoshi spawns an egg or the baby grows larger.
20 Points = You get a whooping 20 points when the egg hatches.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
As you can see from just looking at the points chart, this modern mode
of Chef is a bit more complicated. The graphics have been updated enough
to where you play as Princess Toadstool in the game. Just flip the
assortments of food thrown from the chef's using your frying pan like
before. You can use A and B to just turn your character in place instead
of moving. Flip them till they are medium-rare -- you can tell by the
way the food looks. After the food is adequately cooked, feed to the
Yoshi! Yoshi can eat any type of food, but medium-rare gets you the most
points. Any food that touches the floor is a miss.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - Take special note when you get 200, 500 or 700 points. A red heart
will come onto screen. Catch it with your frying pan or feed to the
Yoshi to get an extra chance.

2. - Feed the Yoshi five medium-rare cooked foods to have him spawn an
egg. Feed it five more medium-rare to have the egg hatch!

3. - Once you have hatched the baby Yoshi, feed it five medium-rare
foods in a row to have it grow larger one time. Repeat indefinitely.

************************************************************************
                      DONKEY KONG (CLASSIC MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left - Move to the Left
Right - Move to the Right
A - Have character jump
B - Change the screen viewed

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Hop over a barrel at the bottom level.
2 Points = Hop over a barrel at the middle level.
5-20 Points = Time bonus. Get to the crane faster to get more points.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
Classic Donkey Kong action! This is where it's at baby. Your girlfriend
has been captured by a giant monkey like usual. You need to make your
way to the top of the building and rescue her. You must dodge obstacles
as you make your way up. Hop over the barrels, but only where there's a
gap in the ceiling. Don't touch the spikes on the platforms in the
middle level. At the top, activate the crane and jump to the hook.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - After you get 300 points you're awarded an extra chance. If you
don't die a single time before reaching 300, all points are doubled
until you do croak.

2. - Jump at the hook at the top of the building ONLY when it's swinging
TOWARDS you.

************************************************************************
                       DONKEY KONG (MODERN MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left - Move to the Left
Right - Move to the Right
A & B - Have character jump

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Jump a barrel on bottom floor.
2 Points = Jump a barrel on middle floor.
3 Points = Jump on top of a Koopa Troopa on bottom floor.
5 Points = Jump on top of a Koopa Troop on middle floor.
5 Points = Jump on top of a Paratroopa on the middle floor.
5-20 Points = Time bonus. Get to the top faster for more points.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
Good! Some updated graphics so you can actually see what your doing.
Donkey Kong has kidnapped Princess Toadstool and you need to get to the
top of the area to rescue her. Hop the barrels like normal, and go up
the pipes. Watch out for the Koopa Troopas and Paratroopas that spawn
from the barrels and the like. There are three different levels, then
you start over and play though again, except the levels keep getting
FASTER and FASTER everytime you go through until it gets ridiculous...

Level 1 - Frantic Factory. Main objective is too hit the switch at the
top level, and cross the moving platform to the top.

Level 2 - Jungle Japes. Hit the switch and then jump to the platform
swinging back and forth. Get to the top from here.

Level 3 - Snow Slew. The trickiest of all the levels, but still not bad.
Hit the switch then hop along the three cloud platforms. The
cloud platforms fade in and out in a pattern, so don’t fall
through. Once you reach the top you start back at level 1.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - After getting 200, 500, or 700 points, a red heart can be found on
the middle floor to give you an extra chance. You must actually collect
it first to get the extra chance...

2. - Did you know Paratroopas and Koopa Troops can be jumped on instead
of just dodging them? Well you do now!

************************************************************************
                         HELMET (CLASSIC MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = While the door is closed, have three tools fall to the ground.
5 Points = Make it to the other side and enter the door.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
This game is a really strange one (fits in nicely, eh?). Your a little
man running between the tool shed and your friend's house. Except
raining down from the sky are tools! Dodge the tools and reach the other
side and enter the door. Over and over again. Very simple. If a tool
bashes your skull it counts as a miss. Too bad the graphics aren't
better...be nice to see brain juice splatter everywhere. What? ;)

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - Earn 200 or 500 points to get another chance.

2. - Play this game in a well lit area.

************************************************************************
                         HELMET (MODERN MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Each coin collected.
5 Points = Enter the door on the other side with 0 coins.
6 Points = Enter the door on the other side with 1 coin.
7 Points =   "    "    "   "  "    "    "    "   2 coins.
8 Points =   "    "    "   "  "    "    "    "   3 coins.
13 Points =  "    "    "   "  "    "    "    "   4 coins.
15 Points =  "    "    "   "  "    "    "    "   5 coins.
17 Points =  "    "    "   "  "    "    "    "   6 coins.
           ...and so on.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
The modern version of helmet is now slightly more complicated. You're in
control of Mario and there is still tools raining down from the sky,
except their dropped by an enemy. Hit the "P" block and coins will
appear on the ground. Collect them while dodging the tools then enter
the door on the right side of the screen. Being smacked by a tool counts
as a miss. There are three different levels, get 500 points to advance
to the next one.

Level 1 - Location: Mushroom Kingdom. Many mallets are dropped from the
sky by a Flying Hammer Troopa.

Level 2 - Location: Sky Land. A red Shy Guy flies at the top of the
screen chucking down spiked balls at you. They can come
         straight down or at angles.

Level 3 - Location: Bowser's Castle. This one is a very tough level.
Watch out for the Thwomps squishing you and the platforms
raising you up to the spiked ceiling.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - Earn 200, 500, or 700 points and a red heart will fall from the
sky. Quickly collect it for an extra chance.

2. - Play as WARIO: Earn less then 100 points yet lose all your lives.
Then pick "retry". Only difference is the clothes. Hopefully you'll
never play as Wario...

************************************************************************
                        PARACHUTE (CLASSIC MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Rescue a person in your boat before they hit the water.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
*music* Row, row, row your boat -- as fast as you can! You control the
little wooden boat at the bottom of the screen in the ocean. Move it
back and forth to catch any parachutists as they jump out of the
helicopter flying above. Any parachutist that you miss and that falls in
the water is fish food for Mr. Shark and counts as a miss. This is one
of my favorite games.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - After earning 200 and 500 points you get an extra chance.

2. - If you mess up and a person plunges into the water -- while Mr.
Shark is eating them, you can still move your boat. So use this time
wisely and line up with the next parachutist.

3. - A parachutist that jumps STRAIGHT down from the helicopter will
plunge like a sack of potatoes. Quickly compensate for this and nab
them. On HARD mode, some parachutists get stuck in the trees...watch
them then nab them with they get unstuck.

************************************************************************
                        PARACHUTE (MODERN MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Rescue a person in your boat before they hit the water.
5 Points = Nab a star in your boat.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
This game is almost identical to the classic mode. It's in color of
course, and there's a few other changes. You must save the parachutists
from plunging into the water again -- this time jumping from a flying
ship at the top of the screen. In the water lurks a hungry Cheep Cheep
Fish. A Lakitu will rescue any parachutists you miss, but you still lose
a chance. This time around there are three different types of jumpers.

Toads   - Opens parachute at the top of the screen.
Monkeys - They ALWAYS open the parachute right before the water.
Yoshis  - The wildcard. The timing when they open a parachute varies.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - After you earn 200, 500, or 700 points and have any misses, three
question marks will appear. One houses a heart inside it. Obviously you
should collect it to get an extra chance.

2. - After you've earned a quantity of 100 points, the flying ship will
throw down three eggs. Each contains something: a star, a ghost, and
nothing. ALWAYS go for the star! If you nab a star in your boat you get
a good amount of points.

3. - Getting a ghost from an egg is VERY bad. Many bombs will be shot at
your boat. Don't catch any or it'll blow a hole in the wooden hull
causing a miss.

************************************************************************
                         VERMIN (CLASSIC MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Smash a mole, get a point.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
In this game all you need to do is protect your garden from the moles
that pop out of the holes. Hey that rhymed! When a mole pops up it's
ugly head, move next to it and you will automatically smash it with your
hammer. Not hitting a mole is a miss. Got it? God this game is boring...

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - You can't erase a miss at any time.
2. - The middle hole is used in HARD mode.

************************************************************************
                         VERMIN (MODERN MODE)
************************************************************************

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right
Down - Move downwards
Up - Move upwards

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point - Smash an enemy.
5 Points - For every unbroken egg you have at every 200 points.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
In this modern mode upgrade you play as Yoshi. Defend your nest of six
eggs from the incoming enemies. Just move next to an enemy to have Yoshi
smash it with his hammer. Hit the enemies when they latch onto an egg.
If you let the enemies latch on too long, the egg will crack. Two cracks
and an egg is destroyed, ending your game. Three enemies will appear:

Koopa Troopas - Very slow moving and pose a small threat.
Ghosts        - Will only move when your NOT looking at them.
Shy Guy       - Very fast moving and pose a large threat.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - Earn 200, 500, or 700 points, and a red heart will appear at the
bottom. Move Yoshi over to it to collect it. The heart will "delete" one
crack on all harmed eggs.

2. - If you have zero damaged eggs and earn 200 points, it's bonus time
for you!

3. - Any non-damaged eggs you have when you reach 200 more points, it's
time for more bonuses.

************************************************************************
[SECRET]                   BALL (CLASSIC MODE)                  [SECRET]
************************************************************************

How to Access:
--------------------------------
To get this hidden game, you must have collected at least 15 stars total
from all of the other games.

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
1 Point = Catch a ball. (easy mode)
10 Points = Catch a ball. (hard mode)

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
I specifically neglected to mention this secret game so it wouldn't
spoil the game for anyone who is actually reading this...that's like,
three people right? The concept of this game is simple: juggle some
glass balls and don't let any hit the ground or you loss the game. This
is very tricky and requires lots of speed...one of my favorite games.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - None at all. Par-tay!

************************************************************************
[SECRET]                   BALL (MODERN MODE)                   [SECRET]
************************************************************************

How to Access:
--------------------------------
To get this hidden game, you must have collected at LEAST 25 stars total
from all of the other games. 100 stars needed to access ALL options
within the game itself.

Controls:
--------------------------------
Left & A - Move to the Left
Right & B - Move to the Right

Scoring:
--------------------------------
2 Points = Every coin you earn.
2 Points = For juggling a red heart, Koopa Shell, or Goomba.
3 Points = Juggle anything but those three listed above.
20 Points = Bonus! Collect every coin.

How the Game Works:
--------------------------------
The same as the classic mode, except you play as Mario characters and
must keep an assortment of objects up in the air so they don't touch the
ground. Any item that hits the ground and it's game over. There are four
different modes of play in this game that can be accessed with ever
increasing amounts of stars. Press "UP" to access them.

Yoshi Ball - Easiest of the modes. Takes 25 stars to access and is
opened immediately after you get this game. After earning
100 points here you can nab some bonus coins. Every time
you get close to earning 100 more points, bombs will rain
            down. DON'T CATCH THEM.

Mario Ball - Medium difficulty. Takes 35 stars to access it. Earn 200
points to get some bonus coins. Every time you get close to
earning 100 more points, fireballs will rain down. DON'T
            CATCH THEM.

Wario Ball - High difficulty. Takes 45 stars to access it. Earn 300
points to get some bonus coins. Every time you get close to
earning 100 more points, spiked bombs will rain down. DON'T
CATCH THEM. Watch out for when you juggling -- if an object
goes off screen it WILL come back sometime, so watch it.

Bowser Ball - EXPERT difficulty. This takes a WHOOPING 100 stars to
access and is extremely difficult. Also very fun too. Earn
400 points to get some bonus coins. Every time you get
close to earning 100 more points, bombs will rain down.
DON'T CATCH THEM. When juggling that stupid Koopa Troopa,
it can sometimes go off screen. Watch for it's decent. The
Goomba is very difficult to juggle as he bounces high and
             lands erratically.

Extra Information:
--------------------------------
1. - In easy mode, you must juggle two objects, in hard mode, this
number is increased to three.

2. - You can earn the five stars on this game by playing ANY version.

And that's all there is to the mini-games...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. GALLERY MODE
------------------------------------------------------------------------

While playing the classic and modern versions of each game you can of
course earn five stars in each of them. This stars let you unlock
various features in the gallery. Here's all the things you can unlock:

 0 STARS
-----------

The Note Board - Upper left area. Basically, view new and old hints that
you have gained access to. Pretty simplistic really.

 5 STARS
-----------

The Music Room - Upper right area. Hmmm this is a nice feature. Listen
to every catchy tune you've encountered in the entire
                game. Hooray!

 THE GIFT
------------

Lower right area. Only used once you earn 25 stars and can at least
access Modern Ball.

 EXTRA GAMES / THE MUSEUM
----------------------------

Here you can play 24 other Game and Watch mini-games. You must unlock
each of them individually and some take another linked Gameboy (see
below about those).

Games to Unlock Manually:
-----------------------------
Donkey Kong        = 10 STARS
Oil Panic          = 20 STARS
Green House        = 30 STARS
Life Boat          = 40 STARS
Donkey Kong Junior = 50 STARS
Tropical Fish      = 60 STARS
Rain Shower        = 70 STARS
Spit Ball Sparky   = 80 STARS

Games to Unlock by Linking:
-----------------------------
OK, I admit it! I had to look at VGW Man's guide for this because there
was no way I could have figured out this secret on a rental of the game.

To access the other 16 games, you must get over 1000 points on EVERY
game in Game and Watch Gallery 2. Then, use a link cable and link
together two Game Boys. One with "Game and Watch Gallery" in it, the
other with "Game and Watch Gallery 2". Now you can access the other 16
games in the "Museum of Game and Watch Gallery 2". I know that sounded
redundant, but I want to make sure you get it. The other 16 games are as
follows:

Judge, Fire Attack, Octopus, Chef, Helmet, Flagman, Mario's Cement
Factory, Fire, Turtle Bridge, Lion, Boxing, Ball, Parachute, Manhole,
Mario Bros., and Vermin.

 CREDITS AND CAST
--------------------

Earn 50 stars to see the game credits. If you earn 120 stars, you can
see the cast. On the Gallery screen, press A and hold it down to see the
credits again. Press up and A to see the cast again. Yah, and I'm so
sure you want to watch this for hours and hours! Arf.

That's because I DIRECTLY send my FAQs there. It's so irritating when
people have outdated or badly-updated versions of my FAQs. I would
always get a lot of emails saying "update your guide" or "where's the
newest version of your guide." This legal note should hopefully fix it.

If you want to use this FAQ, webmasters, take note:

If you want to post this FAQ, do NOT post it directly. Instead link to
