Hello, and welcome to my guide for the Monster Medal dungeon in the Game
Boy Color version of Dragon Warrior 3. This guide is ONLY for the Game Boy
Color version of the game, and ONLY is used for the Monster Medal Dungeon.
Please refer to my Dragonquest 3 Remix (Super Famicom) walkthrough guide if you
like my style of guides/faqs or one of the other faqs for the Game Boy Color
version of the game. Thanks.
In order to even get to this new dungeon, you have to go through the whole
regular game, and defeat Zoma. Once doing that, go back to the Dragon Queen's
Castle on the upper world, and walk into the light shining through at the top
end of the castle. Once warped to a new area, go through that cave, and up to
the tower at the end. At the top of the tower, is a new boss monster called
the Divinegon. Defeat the monster, and when you are allowed to choose one
wish, choose the bottom one (totally blank) to open the dungeon. The location
of the new dungeon is at Liamland (where you put the 6 colored orbs). Enter
the portal you see.
BUT, in order to proceed through more than just the first floor, use a
little strategy: when you are high enough to beat the Divinegon within 15
rounds, simply beat it one time, and choose the 'Rare Medals' wish. This will
net you some of the 155 Medals that are needed to go farther in the Medal Cave.
Choosing 'Rare Medals' the first time will net you a Bronze, Silver and Gold
Medal for these monsters:
#50-Metaly
#87-BlissBird
#109-Metabble
#133-Baramos
#134-Zoma
#143-Divinegon
Now for the sneaky strategy: if you were to turn the game off without
saving and then go back to the Divinegon, you will note that you STILL have all
of those medals and the game still thinks that you have not beaten the
Divinegon. So, if you want to get the most out of your wishes, the little
trick would be to save the game before fighting Divinegon at all. Then, beat
the monster and choose the Rare Medals wish. Next, save your game but on a
DIFFERENT save file.
Do not reset or turn the power off, and play from the NEW file, and go
back to the Divinegon. It says that another wish can be granted, but you must
defeat it within 25 turns. If you are successful, choose the 'Rare Medals'
wish again, and you will receive these medals:
#146-Rare Slime
#148-Rare BossTroll
#149-Rare KingHydra
#150-Rare BaraBomus
#151-Rare BaraGonus
Rare Medals are signified by their octagonal shape rather than fully
circular.
After gaining these, once again save on the NEW file, and make your way
back up to the Divinegon once more. Now, in order to get another wish granted
the monster must be beaten within 15 rounds, which is not an easy task. If you
are successful, however, and choose the 'Rare Medals' wish for a third time,
the Divinegon will give up these 3 very rare (if not impossible to get any
other way) Monster Medals:
#152-Rare Baramos
#153-Rare Zoma
#154-Rare Divinegon
Now, since you have wished for the 'Rare Medals' each time, you would have
to beat the Divinegon again within 15 rounds in order to get the blank 5th wish
to be granted. So, simply turn the game off, and play the original save again.
When you arrive at the Divinegon, it will be as if no wishes were granted
(just beat the monster in any number of turns), but you still have all of those
Rare Medals. This sneaky little strategy makes it much easier to get other
wishes granted instead of just getting medals and then having to keep
attempting to defeat it within 15 turns.
Alright, now that the 'Rare Medals' wishes are granted, there are still
141 other Medals to find (not counting the ones that you found to get up to
this point in the game). So, now is the time to go back and keep fighting
until you get all 155 regular Monster Medals in bronze. Please note that
although there are 165, the only way to get to where 156-165 are is through the
bronze door and silver door.
The complete Monster Medals list is at the bottom of the guide, along with
the place I fought around to find them. For now, here are a few tips to gain
the Medals easier:
First of all, it is a wiser idea to go and collect medals AFTER you have
received the 3 sets of rare ones, because you will be a high enough level to be
able to run away from fights that you do not need to fight.
I myself, used a high level Thief at first, but then I realized I would NEVER
get a Monster Medal if she stole an item at the end of a fight. In my opinion,
the best character to do the medal-fetching would be the Hero.
Go back to Aliahan and drop off your other party members at Ruida's
Tavern. But before you ditch them, make sure to have different weapon types
for your hero. Pretty much when I went out with just my Hero, her equipment
was:
Weapons: King Sword/Ultimate Whip/Wreck Ball.
Armor: Light Armor.
Shield: Doesn't matter.
Helmet: Doesn't matter.
Accessory: LUCKShoes (I am not sure if Luck affects the % of getting a
medal or not, but what the hey).
My reasoning for these choices are simple: KingSword gives you a really
powerful 1 enemy attack, while the Ultimate whip can whipe out a group at a
time for killing monsters that you don't need the medal quickly, and the Wreck
(or Flame Boomerang for weaker monsters) to kill all early monsters in 1 round.
I chose the Light Armor over the Blade for this part because it would get
really annoying if the monster you are trying to get a medal from kills itself
by attacking you and dies before the other monsters are dead first. Also, the
1 HP per step recovery is nice as well.
--------------------------------N O T E------------------------------------
Please note that the ONLY monster that can drop a medal is the last one
that is killed, so kill all other monster types FIRST and leave the one you
want to try to get a medal from for last.
--------------------------------N O T E------------------------------------
Ok, you've gotten all of the Monster Medals and you're still missing some?
Don't worry, you are probably missing medals from the various bosses in the
game and/or the two 'fake treasure chest' monsters, Mimic and Cannibox. No
worries, as all of those monsters can be fought on the first floor of the
Monster Medal cave. Once again, to get to the cave, make sure that the 5th
wish (blank line) was granted from the Divinegon. Now, make your way to
Liamland (where you placed the 6 colored Orbs), and a portal will be there.
Enter it, and there you are. If you are missing any of the following Monster
Medals, they can be received on the first floor of the Monster Medal dungeon.
#55-Cannibox
#99-Mimic
#102-Orochi
#112-BossTroll
#131-BaraBomus
#132-BaraGonus
#144-Kandar (Shanpane Tower version. Wears yellow and green).
#145-Goon (Kandar's little knight henchmen)
#147-Rare Orochi (stronger version, but no way to tell which one is which
that I know).
#155-Rare Kandar (Baharata Cave version. Wears blue and red).
The only way to tell which Orochi that is being fought (that I know of) is
how many experience points are gained. With a 4 character party, if the
regular Orochi is defeated, I think all members gain 520 exp. If the Rare
version is beaten, 2010 experience is gained, along with 1000 gold pieces.
Good luck on getting those two (I lucked out very very much and got them within
a couple of tries).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have obtained at least 1 of the first 155 bronze medals, you can
talk to the man guarding the door and he will move to let you go further. But
first, explore the floor to find a couple of treasures.
If a discerning player notices, this floor is shaped like the Loto symbol
(the multi-winged bird at the title screen). Keep that in mind.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Floor B1
Treasure chests: 4.
Monsters fought: BossTroll, Mimic, Cannibox, Orochi, Rare Orochi, BaraBomus,
BaraGonus, Kandar, Goon, Rare Kandar.
From the teleporter, go west, and then take the northwest passage until
you see a treasure chest. Open it and fight the Mimic inside. Go back the way
you came, and go south (passing the two passages to the west) until you see a
passage leading southwest. In a little alcove to the west is another chest
that contains a Starry Armlet (Agility is doubled and personality remains the
same). Equip it or place it in the item bag and move on.
At the intersection, go east but skip the first passage south, opting for
the second passage to the south. Open the chest at the end and claim the
Goddess Bracelet (Int +33, personality unchanged) for yourself.
Only one chest remains on this floor. Head north again until the
intersection, and skip the passage to the southeast. Take the next passage you
see (heading east), and open the last chest which contains a MysticNut (max MP
goes up to 5 points). From here, go directly west and talk to the old man, who
will move out of the way if you have the 155 bronze Monster Medals. Take the
stairs leading down.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Floor B2
Treasure chests: 7.
Monsters fought: Metabble, BlueDragn, GrayBear, EvilCloud, MtlGoopi,
WhiteLion, BaraEvil
From the stairs, walk around until you hit a T-section. Go west first,
and around the passage until another T-section hits and walk north. Open the
chest and grab the Life Ring (Vit +25, restore 1 HP per step walked,
personality does not change). Now, head back to the first T-section and walk
east. The first path to the south hides a chest with a LifeAcorn (max HP
increases up to 5 points). Take it, and go back up again and continue east.
Skip the large fork going south for a second, and keep going east until you see
another treasure chest. Inside is a Hero Ring (Atk +15, personality changes to
Valiant).
Now, go back to the big fork in the cave going south, and take it.
The first passage to the east holds nothing. The first passage to the west
holds nothing either. Skip the second passage to the east for the time being.
The second passage to the west has a treasure chest. Inside is a STRseed
(strength goes up 1-3 points). Return to the hallway, going south once more.
Enter the next path to the east that comes up, and nab the MysticNut inside.
Two chests to go.
Finally, go back to that passage heading east that was skipped (from the
chest go north, and take the next path to the east that you see). Follow the
passage until it branches into a north path and a western path.
Head west first, and open the chest to obtain another STRseed. Then, go back
to the branched part and go north-northwest. At the next fork going north then
northwest or south, go north and follow it until you get to the last treasure
chest on the floor. It contains a Wizard Ring (restors MP but can break after
any number of uses). Go back to the fork, and this time go south, walking
through the one-way path the the stairs heading down.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Floor B3
Treasure chests: 1.
Monsters fought: GrayBear, BlueDragn, EvilCloud, Metabble, WhiteLion,
IronNite
From the stairs, head north and then walk east at the intersection. Pass
the first path going south, and take the second one to get to the single chest
on this floor. It contains yet another STRseed. Walk to the first
intersection and go west. You will find yourself on a long east-west walkway,
and about halfway through a temple can be seen in the distance. That is your
destination in this cave (as far as I can tell as of right now).
On the other side of the floor, walk west over the ice (note that you
slide across it and cannot control your movements-this will come into play
later on in the dungeon). Keep going until you see another set of stairs going
down.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Floor B4
Treasure chests: 1 (not revealed unless you have the 155 Silver Medals).
Monsters fought: SteelHulk, IronNite, MtlGoopi, Dorasbox, RedDragon
(monsters will attack beyond the Silver Medal door).
This floor is usually the stopping point for collectors, as getting
ANOTHER of each medal again is usually a turnoff. The old man guarding the
silver door wants to see a silver version of all 155 regular medals, but that
seems rather difficult, does it not? Well, he will strike a deal, saying that
if you have 2 bronze medals of a monster, you can trade them in for 1 silver.
So now, you'll have to grab yet another of each medal (the monsters in this
cave do not count, as their numbers are 156-165). Remember the tips from
earlier, and it really isn't that tough (just time consuming).
After trading in your bronze medals for silvers, the old man will let you
through. Monsters will now attack you on this floor, so be weary.
Go through the silver door. The chest on the right can be taken by going
up and around to the right and then down by going past the pointy rocks that
take up 2 spaces (but you can walk behind the upper part). Inside the chest is
a Tiara (Luck +13, personality changes to Ladylike).
The entrace to the temple is at the northern end of the floor.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Temple 1F

the Hero, or any other character that can put it to good use. Now, simply go
to teleport 5 (in the center of the room) and use the next teleport to get to
the stairs once again going down.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Temple B1
Treasure chests: 2.
Monsters fought: DorasBox, IronNite, SteelHulk, RedDragon, MtlGoopi
Go south, across the ice and around to slide across the ice again but
heading west. Bypass the detour west for now and open the treasure chest you
see. Grab the Lucky Book, then take that western detour you passed by.
Here is the icy floor that I was mentioning earlier. To get the treasure
chest, go up to the left block of the two before the ice. Now take a step
north across the ice, and then go west, north, east, north, west, north, east,
and finally north. Grab the STRseed inside, then go back to the beginning of
the ice part.
To reach the stairs, go to the right of the 2 blocks and walk north across
the ice. Then take a step east, north, east, south, west, north, west, north,
and then east. Walk off the ice and open the chest.
Monster Medal Dungeon-Temple B2
Treasure chests: 0.
Monsters fought: GranDragon
Heal up to max HP, and use Wizard Rings to restore all of your MP. Get
ready, this is the big battle! Make your way down, then around and all the way
up to the altar. Talk to the dragon there, and be prepared to fight.
GranDragn
HP: ~9618 (damage done before final blow was 9537).
# of attacks: 1-2
Attacks: Explodet, Stare (put 1 person to sleep), Icy Pulse (nulls spells
like Barrier, TwinHits, SpeedUp, Increase), Flops onto party
(physical damage to all), Attack, Breath (mid damage and high
damage), Chew on 1 party member (high damage).
Eventually, if you win, each party member will gain 12,500 experience
points. I beat him in 30 turns, and the monster said it was falling asleep...
Talk to GranDragn again, and it says "There are 165 Monster Medals. I
doubt that even you would manage to get all the gold Medals."
On the second try, I beat the GranDragn in 25 turns. GranDragn gives you
the Rubiss Sword.
Rubiss Sword
Attack +160
Buy: -/Sell: -
Equippable to: All classes.
When used in battle, it casts the Thordain spell (nice).
Attacks 1 monster in battle.
With Rubiss Sword in hand, I managed to beat GranDragn in 20 rounds on my
3rd attempt. GranDragn gives you a bronze, silver, and gold version of his
medal, #165-GranDragn.
As of the time of Version 1.2 for this guide, I *have* beaten the
GranDragn in exactly 15 rounds one time. Unfortunately, the only thing gained
is yet another set of GranDragn Medals. My original party has now been
retired, and now I will go through the game with just the Hero. Listed here

I found it odd that the only bosses that dropped a Medal for me were the
Divinegon and GranDragn..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since it appears that the GranDragn only needs to be beaten within 25 and
then 20 rounds, my different strategies should work all right. They are:
15 Round Strategy
Since all four party members have almost the same Max HP (see my character
stats), and the Hero nicely had enough MP to cast HealUsAll four times, the
Hero was the only healer in the battle (I healed 3 times in total).
Give the Hero the Rubiss Sword to use as an item every round, unless a
party member falls below 150 HP (use HealUsAll at this time). My Fighter,
equipped with the Beast Claw; simply attacked. The high % rate of a Cricitcal
Hit for a Fighter makes them ideal to simply attack (and do over 300 damage in
the process).
The 2 Thieves who were previously Sages simply cast BlazeMost each round;
except in the first round when one cast TwinHits on the Fighter. If GranDragn
uses the Icy Pulse, keep casting BlazeMost and hope the Fighter does a lot of
Critical Hits.
Luckily, no one in my party was put to sleep by the Stare attack. If
someone DOES get put to sleep, let them wake up on their own (unless it is the
Hero). If, however, 2 or more party members fall asleep, cast Awaken
immediately. If you are lucky, you can beat the GranDragn quickly with this
strategy.
20 Round Strategy
My initial strategy that I used to attempt to beat GranDragn in 15 rounds
(lowest was 17 with this strategy), I had the Hero cast Thordain until his MP
ran out. The Fighter had the Rubiss Sword and used it to cast Thordain.
Whichever Sage/Thief has more maximum MP would cast Transform and become an
alternate Hero who would cast Thordain and then HealUsAll. The lower maximum
MP Sage/Thief cast Blazemost or used one of the two Sagerocks to keep the party
healthy.
25 Round Strategy
The safest way to win (but there is a chance of the fight taking a few
rounds longer), would simply be to have the Hero cast Thordain until MP runs
out and then fighting, another fighting character to fight, and then mages
using either Blazemost or a SageRock. TwinHits is a good spell for fighting
characters, but remember that the GranDragn can use its Icy Pulse and you will
have to recast the spell again, which can waste a lot of turns.

Thanks to: Enix for making a great game on the NES, an even greater remake on
the Super Famicom, and for finally releasing the remake in America for the
GameBoy Color.
Gamefaqs for hosting all of my faqs and guides.
Dem for calling me a totally dumb psycho for going after all of the Medals.
Richie for insisting that Soldiers/Warriors are superior to Fighters;
especially considering that without my Fighter doing 300 damage for Critical
Hits, I would not have beaten GranDragn in 15 rounds.

That's it for now, unless I get enough emails about anything else or any
additions/changes. Thank you for reading my FAQ and email with any questions
(
[email protected]) or if you just want to talk to someone about any of
the Dragonquest games, or any other games I have written FAQ's for.
