1. Intro [INT]

So, here I am again. I was thinking: Hey, I wrote a guide about Clark, well
maybe I should write one about Ralf as well. They are like brother, with
completely different fighting-style. He’s number two on my list of favorite
character ever. When I first played KOF I’d always pick them. Since they
where clones, it really didn’t matter which one, so you played who you
thought looked the coolest.

But nowadays it’s all different! He has his own set of moves, which are
rather hard-hitting and as such make him a easy character to pick up and
play.

Why chose Ralf:

- He has a wide array of moves
- He is the only one in the game with a useful Super Desperation Move
- He’s real brawler

Advanced mechanics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Knock-down attack:

This is a attack which, if it connects the opponent gets knocked down
(hence the name). It can be useful if you want to create some space. In can
also be done while in mid-air.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dodge-roll:

The dodge-roll is a excellent tool too evade some serious damage. You
basically chose the side you want to roll to and as long as you roll you
invincible to everything but throws. Clark himself, he’s a great grappler,
so with some timing you can intercept them with a nasty throw.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Striker:

This is pretty neat. In the lower corners you see the picture of your next
character in line and a number of colored dots. For every colored dot you
can call in a teammate to cut in for a attack. After he hits (or is blocked
or dodged) he splits again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stock, Desperation moves and MAX:

Ok, under your health bar there is a bar, which fills when you get damage,
dish it out or do a special move. When this bar is filled one the slots
below is filled and the bar is empty again. The filled slot is called
stock.

What can you do with stock you ask? Well, you can do Desperation Moves.
These moves do very much damage and look insane to boot. Ralf’s DMs take
out about 1/3 health bar. That’s not too shabby.

When you hit three stock the stock meter says MAX. This means you can
unleash a Super Desperation Move. This drains ALL your stock, which is a
hefty price. The move is obviously pretty damaging, but not as such that a
price of three stock is valid, EXCEPT FOR RALF! Ralf is the only one with
SDM that actually does 80% damage, but will get to that later. ;-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Master system:

When you have finished the game a couple of times, you’ll gain experience
and eventually hit “Master Orochi”. This means that you gain the ability to
activate the Master-mode. While in this mode your stock will slowly drain
and you can pull off as many DM as you want. Personally, I hardly find it
useful.

4. Moves [MVS]

This section is about Ralf’s arsenal of moves. He’s a hard-hitter and has
wide variety of moves. With some solid ground-, air- and countermoves he
becomes a well rounded character. He’s also the only one in the game with a
useful SDM.

Move Info build-up:

NAME (Command to execute the move)

Explanation: Description of what Clark does.

Uses: Description of what the move is good for.

Grade: Grade from 1 to 10, showing the usefulness.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
4.1 Basic Moves [BSC]

Weak punches:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standing weak punch (B)

Explanation: Ralf pulls off a jab.

Uses: The poke move, no much use for it other wise.

Grade: 5.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Close standing weak punch (B when close)

Explanation: Same as above.

Uses: Same as above.

Grade: 5,0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crouching weak punch (Dwn+B)

Explanation: Ralf does a low jab.

Uses: Also a poke, but why crouch? It might be just me, but I find it
useless.

Grade: 4.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jumping weak punch (B in air)

Explanation: Ralf does a jumping jab.

Uses: Not super-useful, good for annoying the opponent.

Grade: 5.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong punches:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standing strong punch (A)

Explanation: Ralf does a backfist.

Uses: This is pretty good, it comes out at a decent speed and does good
damage. It’s reach is good too!

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Close standing strong punch (A when close)

Explanation: Ralf executes a bash with his forearm.

Uses: Pretty much the same move as above only with an other animation.
That’s not a bad thing though...

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crouching strong punch (Dwn+A)

Explanation: A crouching dual punch

Uses: Good for the high-low game, in combination with standing A. Keep them
guessing! About the same damage.

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jumping strong punch (A in air)

Explanation: A sort of flashing elbow, but then mid-air.

Uses: Does decent damage, but I would advice the strong kick instead. It
has better reach and a better angle.

Grade: 6.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weak kicks:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standing weak kick (L)

Explanation: Ralf does a fast high kick.

Uses: It has good range, it’s fast and it has decent damage. It’s good for
poking, even better than the jab.

Grade: 6.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Close standing weak kick (L when close)

Explanation: Same as above.

Uses: Same as above.

Grade: 6.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crouching weak kick (Dwn+L)

Explanation: Ralf does a fast low kick.

Uses: Not very useful...

Grade: 4.5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jumping weak kick (L in air)

Explanation: Ralf extends his leg, in a attempt to kick the opponent.

Uses: This one has pretty good reach, but the strong version has the same
reach and more damage, so use that one.

Grade: 6,5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong kicks:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standing strong kick (R)

Explanation: Ralf executes a spinkick

Uses: Comes out quick for a strong attack, has some good range and hella
damaging for a standard attack

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Close standing strong kick (R when close)

Explanation: Ralf does a bicycle-kick. No not the one that Liu Kang did in
MK, but a actual bicycle-kick!

Uses: The same as above, other animation.

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crouching strong kick (Dwn+R)

Explanation: Ralf extends his leg, attempting to sweep the opponent, while
touching the ground with his hand fir more balance.

Uses: Knock-down is always good when you need space. Use this at you
leisure.

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jumping strong kick (R in air)

Explanation:

Uses:

Grade:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.2 Special Moves [SPC]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vulcan Punch (Tap A/B)

Explanation: Ralf punches VERY fast in a slightly upward angle, which when
connects, lights the opponent on fire.

Uses: Mmm... Ok this is kind of tricky. If someone is very obvious in there
jumping behavior, you can use this as decent anti-air, other wise chances
are that you’ll get attacked before you pull it off. (hits ones)

Grade: 5.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gatling Attack (Charge Bkw, Frw+A/B)

Explanation: Ralf does a backfist (hits twice instead of Clark’s one hit)
and follows it up with a uppercut. (4 hit total)

Uses: Although Clark has this move too, Ralf’s version is more useful. It
has slightly more range, does more damage and does an extra hit for style-
points. It works great as punisher. Block (which also counts as charging)
and when he is done release when he can’t block.

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diving Bomb Punch (Charge Dwn, Up+A/B OR Dwn, Dwn+Fwd, Fwd+A/B)

Explanation: Ralf jumps (or is already mid-air depending on the version),
halts for half a second and charges down “superman”-style. When he hits the
ground a explosion occurs, lighting the opponent on fire when connected.

Well there are 2 parts to this move; the charge-version and the mid-air-
version, so I will treat them as such.

Charge-version

Uses: Personally I think this move is crap. People see it coming from miles
away and chance are you’ll get beaten in to submission before you pull it
off. Use the other version for your own sake.

Grade: 3,5

Mid-Air-Version

Uses: This one is actually very nice. It comes out fairly quick and does
decent damage. Good for getting those nasty anti-air freaks a taste of air-
superiority. In combination with empty jumping (jumping without attacking)
followed by Argentine Back Breakers.

Grade: 7.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ralf Kick (Charge L/R)

Explanation: Ralf ducks, hits the ground and then lunges in the air in a
spinning kick. (sort of like a torpedo)

Uses: Decent move, except for the fact that the charge time seems rather
long. This could be just me. There are 2 versions; the long range and the
medium range. The long range isn’t that useful, but the mid-range is. It
does good damage and travel about half a screen.

Grade: 6,5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ralf Tackle (Frw, Frw+Dwn, Dwn, Dwn+Bkw, Bkw+L/R)

Explanation: Ralf storm towards his opponent in a attempt to tackle him
with his shoulder, fling him up in the air.

Uses: This move suffers from the lag at the end. If you fail to connect, it
gives the opponent just enough time to pull something off. It does charge
your meter fast with the multiple blocked hits, but the retaliation can be
horrendous!

Grade: 4,5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Super Argentine Back Breaker (Bkw, Bkw+Dwn, Dwn, Dwn+Frw, Frw+L/R)

Explanation: Ralf grabs the opponent, flinging him in the air (out of the
sceen) an will catch him on his shoulders, to throw him to the ground.

Uses: When ever possible! This move does a load of damage and has the
tendency to cancel out enemy moves. It’s also the only grapple-move in
Ralf’s arsenal, not counting the standard throws.

Grade: 7,5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.3 Desperation Moves [DMS]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Super Vulcan Punch (Dwn, Dwn+Fwd, Fwd, Dwn+Frw, Dwn, Dwn+Bkw, Bkw+A/B)

Explanation: Ralf does a backfist and then pulverizes the opponent with a
flurry of fast Vulcan Punches, finishing with a mighty uppercut, lighting
the opponent on fire! (BBQ anyone??)

Uses: This is his best DM, no questions asked! It comes out lightning fast
and will take a big chunk out of that health bar and also does considerable
block-damage. VERY GOOD!

Grade: 9,0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mounted Vulcan Punch (Dwn, Dwn+Bkw, Bkw, Dwn+Bkw, Dwn, Dwn+Frw, Frw+L/R)

Explanation: Ralf rushes at the opponent, tackles them and sits on their
stomach. He will then bash on the opponents face, finishing off by raising
fist and hitting them so hard that they slide across the screen.

Uses: Believe it or not, this move works great as anti-air if you time it
right. Just before they hit the ground or when they just jumped, you can
knock the opponent out of the sky. As far as I know it can’t be air-blocked
and it does good damage. Other than this use, it gets blocked rather
easily.

Grade:8,0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.4 Super Desperation Moves [SDM]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Super Vulcan Punch MAX

Explanation: Ralf does a double backfist, then a ULTRA FAST Vulcan Punch
finished by a triple uppercut that sets the opponent on fire.

Uses: It’s not worth it! It has the same pros that the normal version has,
but for 3 stock, the damage is way to low! Rather use the normal version 3
times or... (see next SDM)

Grade: 7,0
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phantom Galactica MAX

Explanation: Ralf pulls back his upper body for a second or two and then
lunges at the opponent, hitting him and setting him on fire. (looks realy
painful)

Uses: I see you thinking: ”A second or two charge time?! There goes my
three stock!” BUT it has auto-guard for everything except throws and
fireballs and does about 80% damage (more if it counters *EVIL*). You can
dodge-roll it, but as it’s so fast that can be tricky. Ow, did I also
mention that it’s UNBLOCKABLE! This is pretty much the only SDM that I use.
Only use it if you are pretty away from your opponent!

Grade: 8,0

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
5. Strategy [STG]

Since Ralf is a well rounded character, he can employ multiple strategies.
So I’ll give you the low-down. Play the “guess game”. This basically means
that you mix high attacks with low attacks. Diving Bomb Punch is a good one
to mix in too. It come out pretty quick and if used with jumping strong
kicks, can catch the opponent of guard.

If the opponent starts to block your jumping attacks, jump in without
attacking and pull of a Super Argentine Back Breaker. If he starts to
counter your air-attacks, throw in a Ralf Tackle or a Ralf Kick. And
remember to counter with the gatling attack.
