1. == Introduction ==

This is my first FAQ, so I'm expecting it to be full of errors and to be
horrible and whatsoever.

Fell free to mail your opinions, but I don't have an internet connection at
home now, so I can't check my mail as often as I would like.

Please note that learning only Hiragana and Katakana helps a lot with
this game, and it doesn't take much time (ND2 was the reason I decided to
learn it).

I don't really feel like writing a review of the game (at least for
now), this isn't the place for it. It's better to play and see by
yourself, or if you really need it, find it somewhere online.

This FAQ cannot be posted on other sites than www.gamefaqs.com and
www.tales-central.com without my permission.

Before you start reading, please check if the table columns are straight:

- Knight (Kenshi) Costume -

Name               -  TP - Lv - Notes
---------------------------------------------------------
Majinken           -   4 -  1 -
Raijinken          -   6 -  3 - Lightning damage
Akisazame          -  11 -  8 -
Kogahazan          -  12 - 15 -
Shinkuhazan        -  12 - 23 -
Gurenken           -  15 - 28 - Fire damage
Senkuureppa        -  12 - 36 -
Majinsouhazan      -  20 - 40 -

If the columns are out of line you should change the font to a one that has
even spacing (Courier New is the one I used when writing this FAQ).

5. == Battles ==

One of the things that make Tales series unique is the Linear Motion
Battle system or LMB. The battles are presented like in 2D fighting
games: the battle area is horizontal, scrolling left and right, and you
control one character directly while others are controlled by the AI.

Depending on the setting in Custom Menu you have different range of
control over your character:
Auto      - Character is controlled by AI, you can only choose skills
            from menu.
Semi-Auto - You can walk, run and block manually. The character will
automatically run up to enemy when attacking or using short
range skill and then run back.
Manual    - Everything like in Semi-Auto except you can jump and your
character doesn't run up to enemies if you use short range
skill. You should use this for most fun and control, only
using Up+B skill can be tricky.

Battle Controls in Semi-Auto mode:

Left/Right       - Walk left/right
A Button         - Attack targeted enemy
B Button         - Use skills on targeted enemy
Start            - Pause
Select           - Bring up Battle Menu
R Button+Up/Down - Select target
L Button         - Guard

Battle Controls in Manual mode:

Left/Right            - Walk left/right
Double tap Left/Right - Run left/right
Up                    - Jump
Left/Right+Up         - Diagonal jump

A Button     - Slash attack
Down+A       - Thrust attack
Up+A         - Upward attack
(Jump) A     - Attack in midair
(Run) Up+A   - Jump slash attack
D-Pad+B      - Use skills

Start            - Pause
Select           - Bring up Battle Menu
R Button+Up/Down - Select target
L Button         - Guard

Not all characters have all of the mentioned attacks (some can't jump for
example) and some have "special" moves. They will be mentioned in the
Characters section.

Most characters have double normal attacks, so if you press
A,A it would be two quick hits.

Almost every skill can be linked from normal attack (For example pressing
A,A,B for two slashes and skill). It's useful for getting sure that your
attack won't be blocked or countered.

6. == Before You Begin ==

Some things you should remember:
- Talk to every character you see in town, this helps getting their
 costumes
- If there are two characters in one location, you can choose which
one do you want to speak with by pressing Left/Right when only one
 character is highlighted
- To get most of the costumes you need to use that characters in
missions and gain experience with them
- After every mission buy any items you need, especially food and
 healing items
- Use Cooking while on missions, this way you can save healing items
 for battles
- You must take Furio and Kyaro on every mission (they can be in
 different teams) (With one exception)
- By Narikiri team I mean the team with Furio and/or Kyaro
- I didn't know where to put this, so: remember that the spells and items
that stop time do not work on bosses
- Always be sure to level up so you don't have trouble with going through
 any mission
- The amount of experience points you recieve after battle depends on the
overall level of the party and the difficulty of the mission, so don't put
lv 40 characters along with lv 15 in hope to level up fast

7. == Walkthrough ==

After the introduction, go to the building with the antenna to start
the first mission.

Be sure to change costumes (Furio's to Knight, Kyaro's to whichever
you want).

There's not much to say, just get to the stairs. You can open the doors
by changing Furio's costume to Thief, and grab the chests.
When you'll walk up the first set of stairs, change Kyaro's costume
(if you didn't do it before) to Scholar, and a second set will appear
and you'll be able to reach Elrain.

Elrain
HP:      2000
Element: Light
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

She isn't very hard to defeat, you just have to keep attacking her
from both sides (I used Knight + Fighter combination and didn't have
much trouble) and leave healing to Refill.

-- In town --
in the morning Refill will come around and give you some Root items (Dekki
Brush (Stahn), Wordoobuwan (genius), Rashuan Zome (Farah), Miko-no Shouzoku
(Colette)).

The two chests that you can reach now are empty, so you can just ignore
them. The ones behind the doors cannot be reached until you get special
keys (Inishie-no Kagi) later in the game.

You just have to defeat the monsters holding Dr. White and the
mission's over.

B - Boss

1. Leather Mantle
2. 222 Gald
3. 333 Gald
4. Kyouten

You need two teams to open big doors on this level.

When You open the last door Pony and Clyde will appear and turn Furio
and Kyaro into stone statues too.
After a while, Philia will appear and restore everyone back to normal,
including the third statue which is Mary.
Mary and Philia will form a new team and they will join you after this.

Barbatos
HP:      3000
Element: Dark
Resist:  None
Weak:    Light

This battle is much harder than previous ones. Barbatos has a very
annoying spell, Negative Gate, which cannot be interrupted. The best
way to defeat him is to use two fighting characters to attack him from
both sides so he cannot cast any spells or do anything else.

6. Talisman

It would be good if you had a Witch in your team now, but it's rather
impossible, so you'll have to come back here later to get the two chests
in the middle.

When you'll reach the top of the level Lloyd and Colette will appear
again and you'll have to fight them. They're both higher level than
they should, but they aren't very hard to beat.

Lloyd Arwing
HP:      2200
Element: None
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

Colette Brunel
HP:        1900
Elemental: None
Resist:    None
Weak:      None

Now the main boss.

Thanatos
HP:      4000
Element: None
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

He can teleport, cast Wind Cutter, Fireball, and use his annoying hair attack
that can stun your characters. Just attack him constantly and heal if you need
to (if you have Refill on your team this shouldn't be a problem) and you'll
beat him with ease.

After the fight Lloyd and Colette will join you. (I personally think that
Lloyd is one of the best characters. I used his costume all the time since
I got it.)

You'll need to free Arche to get to Dhaos, so send Kyaro or Furio (or both,
you need a Thief to open the door, you can't use a Kagiake Set) to get to her
and use the remaining teams to open the chests.
When you get Arche use her to fly over the water and throw the switch near
Dhaos, and beat him up.

Dhaos

-- Mission 6 - Remi Ruins L1 --

Win Condition - Get to the stairs to next level
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated

You'll have to get through first floor of Remi Ruins again (and it's not
the last visit here, so get used to it), but you don't have to fight enemies,
you can just walk past them. You just need to bring one team to the stairs
to get to the next level.

- Chests -

There are really only three chests here:
1. Touzoku-no Dagger
2. Hourglass
3. Magic Mist

This level is "infinite", you can scroll the map in any direction and
always end up in the same place.
You should see Reala somewhere on the map, and probably another character.
You have to walk to them with correct characters in group to make them
join you, or you'll have to fight them, and they'll just reappear
somewhere else.
To get Reala you need Kyle, and to get Rutee bring Mary.

Now you can return to level 7 witch Arche to get Chester if you want to.

-- Mission 8 - Chizel Castle --

Be sure to take Arche on this mission, and it would be good if you
had Kyaro's Witch costume. If you have them both be sure to put them in
two different teams.

1. Miracle Gummy
2. Life Bottle
3. 777 Gald
4. 1400 Gald
5. Paralyze Check
6. Frypan
7. Kuro-no Robe

When you begin the mission, Rid will run up to you and join you in
new team.
Now make Arche the leader of the team she's on and fly up. If you have
Kyaro's Witch costume, put it on, make her the leader and fly left.

What you have to do is to defeat monsters that are holding Farah and
Keele, so chase them. The one with Keele can be annoying, because he's
traveling on the platforms, but just wait for them at a spot where they
get off.
When you attack the group that is holding Keele or Farah, they'll be
fighting with monsters against you so use strong characters.

In the meantime I used Arche's team to get the four chests on the
separate island, and the rest of the teams to defeat monsters.

After you free Farah and Keele, they will appear in front of the gate
and you'll have to fight them again. Be sure to take Keele out first,
as he can cast his spells very quickly.

Farah Oersted
HP:      3300
Element: None
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

Keele Zeibel
HP:      2300
Element: None
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

After the fight they'll run up the stairs, our characters following them,
and meet with Pony and Clyde and they'll run off.
The unconscious Farah and Keele will get up and join you.

-- Mission 9 --

There are two missions now, and depending on which one you choose,
you'll get different character to join you.
If you choose the top mission Judas will accompany you now, and Leon
will join you later, if you take the lower one, Leon will accompany you
and Judas will join you later.

This is description for the top mission. The lower is the same,
just losing condition "Judas defeated" is replaced with "Leon defeated"

Win Condition  - Rescue the three persons in the middle

You need to put four of your teams on the switches in corners of this
level to turn off the barrier.  After stepping on a switch enemy group
will appear, and you'll have to defeat them unless all four switches will
be pressed at once. But then you won't get the experience... Your choice.

After all switches are pressed the barrier will go down and a monster
will appear. Leon and Judas will attack him.

Now you'll have three missions available, but you have to complete them
all, so I'll describe them in order from lowest to highest.

-- Mission 11 --

When the mission starts you'll see a girl chasing a monster around.
After a while the monster will attack her and she'll hide behind you.
The monster appears to be a robot, but for something that big it's very
easy to defeat. After the battle the girl will "thank" you for destroying
her robot. In a short conversation you'll find out that girl's name is
Harold (?!?), and she will join you.

Win Condition  - Disable two copy machines
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated, Harold defeated

You need to disable two real copy machines. To disable them walk to them
with Harold, but be sure to have another team on guard, because when you
start to fiddle with the machines monsters will appear. You have to keep
her near the machine for a few turns to get it disabled.

In the middle of the level there's Chizel waiting for you, and you should
build up some levels to make the fight easier.

-- Mission 12 - Catmen Village --

Win Condition  - Defeat all monsters
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated, Monsters get to elder's house

You can set some traps in this mission, so put them on the stairs leading
to the village, than just wait until monsters get to you.

At some point enemies will appear near the elder's house, but then Fog
will appear and destroy two of them.

After the mission Fog will join you.

-- Mission 13 - Elven Forest --

Because half-elves cannot enter the forest, Arche, Refill and Genius
will be automatically removed from your teams, not that it matters,
because you can't use magic in forest. You should remove all magic users
from your teams and replace them with fighters.

Win Condition  - Defeat all monsters (And rescue hostages)
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated

At the beginning you'll meet Cless, Stahn, Mint and Nanaly who will join
you. Cless, Stahn and Nanaly will form a team while Mint will stay on
the island. If you'll put a team near her she'll cast Nurse on that team.

You'll probably notice that some of the heroes are gone from your teams,
so be sure to replace them, but don't put in any magic users because
you won't be able to use magic here.

Win Condition  - Defeat all enemy heroes teams in 30 turns
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated, 30 turns gone by

When you enter the level you'll see missing heroes but they won't join
you back, you'll have to fight them.

-- Mission 16 - Remi Ruins L4 --

You can only take Kyaro and Furio on this mission, and that means you
have to remove every other character from any team.

Win Condition  - Get to the end of the level
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated

Of course you have to get through levels 1, 2 and 3 before you get to
the last floor. There's really nothing to write here just go forward.
You should fight all of the monsters to get XP's.

-- Mission 17 --

Be sure to put characters back in teams.

Win Condition  - Get Hikari-no Kagi (Key of Light)
Lose Condition - Narikiri team defeated

This is the first mission with laser cannons so I'll describe it a little.

The cannons can have three colors: grey, yellow and red, which indicate
when the cannon will fire. If your team gets hit they'll take a lot of
damage (I think it's 50% of character's HP, but I'm not sure). If enemy
group gets hit it will be destroyed.

After you defeat Kongman Win and Lose conditions will change:

Win Condition  - Get Tabidachi-no Kagi or Defeat all enemies
Lose Condition - Enemies get Tabidachi-no Kagi, Narikiri team defeated

After a while more enemies will appear along with two Tales characters,
Johnny and one depending on the mission you've chosen: Woodrow if you've
chosen Fire Tower, Chelsea if you've chosen Ice Cavern.

All of the red chests will be opened at the end of the mission but you
have to get the blue ones normally.

Kongman, Johnny and the third character will join you after this mission.

Be sure to take Woodrow or Chelsea and Genius with you on this mission.

Lose Condition - Evil Furio gets Mirai-no Kagi, Narikiri team defeated,

The key isn't in a chest this time, but instead one of the enemy groups
has it, so fight every group you'll see.
You should see two Tales characters: Chelsea or Woodrow and Presea.
To convince Presea talk to her having Genius on the team, and to get
Chelsea/Woodrow bring the other character.

You can revisit this level to unlock three more characters.
Bring Farah, Meredy and Presea in your teams. When you enter the level
you'll see two characters: Race and Chat. After one of them joins you
Regal will appear.
Here's which characters you need:
Race - Farah
Chat - Meredy
Regal - Presea

After the last character joins you, the mission will end and disappear
from mission list.

-- Mission 20 --

You will have only Furio on this mission because Kyaro will be leading
another party in a different place. You should leave Arche, she'll be of
more use to Kyaro.

Win Condition - Get to the switch
Lose Condition - Furio's team defeated

After walking a few steps an alarm will sound and enemies will start
appearing on the portals in every room that you have a team in. After
a few next steps electric barriers will start to appear, blocking your path.
A few steps later the last alarm will be triggered and some more barriers
and enemies will appear.

- Chests -
(From right to left)

Elixir
Pandora
Persia Boots
5000 Gald
6000 Gald

Don't worry if you won't be able to get some of the chests, you can
return to this level later, it's a great place to gain experience.

You didn't think you could end a mission like this without a boss
fight, did you? But don't worry, this guy won't be much of a problem.

Yggdrasil
HP:      12000
Element: Light
Resist:  Light
Weak:    None

They let anybody be a boss nowadays... this guy sucks!
All right he has 12000 HP, but that's all (Yeah, I know he has some nasty
spells/skills. So what? He can't use them :). My team was Furio (Lloyd) Lv.48,
Suzu Lv.40 and Shiina Lv.38. He didn't even have time to use any skills, just
go with Lloyd's Reppuukugashou and Shuuusouhazan, let the girls do what they
want and he's done. It took me less than a minute to beat him.
Definitively the easiest boss in the game.

-- Mission 21 --

Now you'll be leading Kyaro's teams. if you have Arche available then
put her in a different team than Kyaro. You could also use Witch costume
for Kyaro (you should have Arche's costume by now, Arche's the best
spellcaster IMO) and a strong costume (Valkyrie would be good).

Win Condition  - Get to the switch
Lose Condition - Kyaro's team defeated

Another level with laser cannons. Each time you cross a river the
cannons will start shooting faster. By pressing the red buttons you'll
open the bridges and deactivate the barriers.
Oh, and be sure to see who's guarding the switch... very funny.
They did this on purpose to create a contrast with Ygdrassil. Better
build up some levels.

S - Start
X - Switch
O - Laser Cannon
B - Boss

- Chests -

1. 6000 Gald
2. 5000 Gald
3. Blue Talisman
4. Pandora
5. Elixir

Now for the boss:

Barbatos
HP:      12000
Element: None
Resist:  None
Weak:    None

Ok, I used Kyaro (Valkyrie) Lv.46 , Cless Lv.38 and Chester Lv.39 and got
him pretty easily, but without much finesse. I used only Valkyrie Strike
and Valkyrie Saber and I was able to defeat him pretty easily (Yeah, that
may be cheap, but what will you say about him?). I remember that when I
was playing for the first time I took a serious beating here.

-- Mission 22 - Remi Ruins --

You have to talk to all of the Tales characters in town before this
mission. You could also go to mission 20 and level up a bit.

Win Condition  - Get to the last level
Lose Condition - Lose a team

At each level you'll have to leave a team when you reach the stairs.

B - Boss

1. Excalibur
2. Elixir
3. 20000 Gald
4. Pandora Box
5. Jet Boots
6. Ether
7. 15000 Gald
8. 10000 Gald

Go and kill anything that stands in your way. You'll need all the
experience you can get for the coming battles.

Evil Furio and Kyaro will be waiting for you on the last level.
Before every battle you will be asked if you want to fight,
answer no if you need to heal or change costumes.

- 1st Fight -

Evil Furio (Fighter)
HP: 6000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

Evil Kyaro (Knight)
Hp: 3000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

Piece of cake, just use normal fight strategy.

- 2nd Fight -

Evil Furio (Judas or Leon)
HP: 6000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

Evil Kyaro (Mint)
HP:      3000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

You should take Mint out first since she has less HP and can heal
the enemy party.

- 3rd Fight -

Evil Furio (Yggdrasil)
HP:      10000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

Evil Kyaro (Chizel)
HP:      10000
Element: None
Resist
Weak

This fight can get VERY HARD (surprised?). It was very late and I was really
tired, so I just used Valkyrie Saber (but no 100% guarantee you'll win).
Your opponent's are using boss costumes why you shouldn't?

After the fight you'll get some nice Root items.

When you return to the town talk to all of the characters and go to
the lab. You can now sit back and watch the credits roll. Remember to save
your game afterwards.

8. == Side Quests ==

-- The Coliseum --

After mission 18 you can enter the coliseum competition, but you need
high levels to even think about winning. Only Furio and Kyaro will be
fighting here.
To make this pretty easy you can do this after getting some boss costumes
(Valkyrie is pretty good). When I was playing for the first time I used
Furio(Lloyd) Lv.63 and Kyaro(Arche) Lv.60 and I had some trouble with
later opponents.

The competition is a series of fights with main Tales heroes. They are
very difficult opponents, totally opposite of the monsters in dungeons.
They can also use Desperation Attacks and they will use them when they
have a chance, so finish them off as quickly as possible.
Your characters don't heal between battles, so you have to heal by
yourself.

Note the cool remixed versions of BGM's for every character.

< 1st Fight >
Cless Alvein
HP:     8000
Resist: All
Weak:   None

< 2nd Fight >
Stahn Aileron
HP:     8500
Resist: All
Weak:   None
Immune: Fire

< 3rd Fight >
Rid Hershel
HP:     9000
Resist: All
Weak:   None

< 4th Fight >
Kyle Dynamis
HP:     7000
Resist: All
Weak:   None
Immune: Wind

< 5th Fight >
Lloyd Arwing
HP:     10000
Resist: All
Weak:   None

< 6th Fight >
Lilith Aileron
HP:     12000
Resist: All
Weak:   None

The reward is Gin-no Otama used to get Lilith costume.

-- Tower of Druaga --

To enter the Tower of Druaga you need Gil's costume. Put it on and go talk
with Sister Paula and you're there.
There are 10 floors. At floor 9 you'll have to defeat four blue groups of
enemies and then Druaga will appear. Beat him, go through the door and get
the chests.

10. == Characters' Skills ==

I'm going to list characters and their skills here with some notes to
them, but because I'm lazy this will probably take long to complete.

Desperation Attack (DA) - To use desperation attacks your character's HP
must be red BUT you need to have at least over 50% HP before. (So you can't
just enter a fight with red HP and use the DA right away). After using this
move your HP will drop to 1 so be sure to heal immediately.

Time Stop (TS) - Not the spell. Marks an attack that stops time during
execution. All DA's, summons and spells (except low level ones) have this.

In case you didn't notice the difference between skills and spells is that
spells (and summons) have casting time during which character is vulnerable
to attack. If a character is hit during spellcasting, he or she'll have to
start over, so keep your spellcasters away from the main fight.

And one more thing. Remember to disable weak moves for characters controled
by AI, especially for spellcasters.

- Kenshi (Knight) -

Name               -  TP - Lv - Notes
---------------------------------------------------------
Majinken           -   4 -  1 -

Gurenken           -  15 - 28 - Fire damage
Senkuureppa        -  12 - 36 -
Majinsouhazan      -  20 - 40 -

Special:
Up+A   - Shoot (high arc) (definitely breaks some physics laws :)
A      - Shoot (straight)

Shinten is very good against flying or very big enemies, if you run up close
to them probably all arrows will hit doing lots of damage, and Hayate almost
replaces basic attack when you get it.

wasn't very useful. Senkusouhazan is pretty good, until you can get
better moves.

Moves List
Name               -  TP - Lv - Notes
--------------------------------------
Majinken           -   4 -  1 -
Shunjinken         -   5 -  3 -
Rekkuzan           -  12 - 10 -
Kogahazan          -  12 - 15 -
Akisazame          -  11 - 18 -
Suigojin           -  50 - 25 - Shields from damage
Hitenshouku        -  25 - 33 -
Reppuukugashou     -  32 - 38 -
Shuuusouhazan      -  36 - 43 -
Tenshousouhazan    - 100 - 50 - Desperation attack, Light damage

I think Lloyd is one of the best fighting characters. His basic attack
(A) is very fast, and most enemies can't retaliate, even though it doesn't
count as combo, so you can keep enemies busy while the other characters
are casting spells.
You can also use Slash, Majinken (or Slash, Slash, Majinken) combination
to hold enemies in place.
Shuuusouhazan is one of Lloyd's best moves, if you're lazy you can just
use this one and still be able to kill almost every enemy. The downside is
that it uses up TP pretty fast (along with Reppuukugashou).
