1. Introduction

Allo! Welcome to the latest in my series of monopolistic in-depth FAQs
for Square-Enix's Sword of Mana. Rather than being a simple cut and paste from
my main FAQ, this time this guide will be more, well, in-depth. Co-authoring
credit goes to Terence (whether he wants it or not ^_^ ), since this guide
wouldn't exist were it not for his supoib hacking and researching skills.
If you haven't guessed it yet, this FAQ deals solely with Seeds and
Produce. First introduced in Legend of Mana, Fruits and Vegetables (Produce
have a bit more limited role in Sword of Mana. Since Golems and Pets don't
exist in Sword of Mana, gone are Produce's important functions of increasing a
Pet's stats or, umm... painting your Golem a different color. Instead, Produce
are used only for tempering Weapons and Armor. Thus, if you want your Weapons
and Armor to be as strong as possible you'll need to spend plenty of time at
the Hot House Orcard.
This guide will take you through all of the ins and outs of gathering
Seeds and harvesting Produce. And if any of this seems confusing, then don't
even try Legend of Mana ^_^

Getting Started
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order to plant Seeds and harvest Produce, you must go to the Hot House
Orchard. You'll first get access to the Hot House soon after you emerge from
Batmo Cave early in the game. You're pretty much forced to buy Cactus Essence,
so don't be worried that you may miss out on it- just play the game as usual
and you'll receive it eventually. Once you have Cactus Essence, approach a Pot
and press A. You'll be asked if you want to build a Hot House. Say yes, and
you'll enter the Hot House. Once inside, head up and go through the door on
the right and you'll be in the Orchard. There are SIX locations where there
are Pots for placing a Hot House:
1. Vinquette Vicinity
2. Mushboom Forest
3. Prickly Desert
4. Glass Desert (South)
5. Rocky Wilds
6. Mana Sanctuary
I will not give the exact locations because they're all easy to find. I
would recommend using the one in Mushboom Forest, however, since it's right
next to a Town (Wendel) and an Armory.
Gathering Seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chances are you'll have Seeds before you even first enter a Hot House.
There are essentially two ways to get Seeds. Chests in Dungeons/Towns may
contain Seeds. However, those are in limited supply, so your best bet is
to defeat Monsters in hopes that they will drop Chests that contain Seeds.
For information on which Monsters drop which seeds, please refer to Chapter
3.
Planting Seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once you have at least TWO Seeds, talk to Trent in the Hot House Orchard
and he'll tell you to choose two seeds. The combination of Seeds that you give
him, as well as the DAY on which you give him the Seeds affects the Produce
that you get. To get the Day to change, you must move across "screens" until
the Icon on the lower-left corresponds to what day you want.
First, you must understand how time works in Sword of Mana. Each time you
enter another screen (when the screen blacks out), time advances. You can tell
what the time of day is by the coloring of the area. If the area looks light,
then it's Day. If, on the other hand, it's dark, then it's Night. Morning
(Sunrise/Dawn) looks brighter than Day, while Evening (Sunset/Dusk) gives
the area an orange tint.

Each time you go through the cycle, the day changes.

There is often confusion regarding what Mana Holy Day is. Shade and Wisp
do not get their own Day. Instead, one day of the week is designated a Holy
Day (a Sabbath, if you will) in reverence for the Mana Goddess. The Icon for
Mana Holy Day does not look like any of the Spirits. When in doubt, just
remember that Mana Holy Day comes right after Gnome Day.
Again, the Day is very important in determining what Produce you receive,
so make sure you understand how it works.
The results of planting different Seed combinations on different Days will
be given in Chapter 4.
Note that you can give Trent a maximum of 8 pairs of Seeds at a time,
which means you can get 8 Produce at a time.
Harvesting Produce
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To make the Produce grow, just exit the Orchard (no need to exit the Hot
House), then enter it again. Go up the ladder on the right to reach the
scaffolding. You'll enter Battle Mode. Head up and "attack" the Produce to
harvest it.
Using Produce
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main function of Produce is to increase your Weapon and Armor stats by
tempering the Produce into them. Tempering is not within the scope of this FAQ
however. For more information on Tempering, please see my upcoming
Weapons/Armor FAQ or the Weapons/Armor Chapter in my main FAQ.
Produce does have a few other uses, however. You can give a Honey Onion
and a Diceberry (plus Honey, which BeBes drop) to Clive for a Honey Elixir.
Clive appears in the Topple General Store, Jadd Inn, and Lorimar Castle.
There is also a Quest in the Ishe Blacksmith, where a Dwarf will ask for
some Produce. You'll get Dudbears Gold in return.

3. Gathering Seeds

Aside from finding them in Chests in Dungeons or Towns, the only other way
to get Seeds is by finding them in Chests dropped by enemies. The following
tables show which enemies drop which Seeds. For enemy locations, please refer
to my upcoming Monster FAQ.

6. Stupid Questions

1) Q. Are there any other ways to get Produce aside from planting Seeds?
A. Actually, yes. Citrisquids and Bumpkins are dropped by some enemies.
You can also get Rhinoloupes or a Kittypie from a Quest.
2) Q. What are the changes to the Produce system from Legend of Mana?
A. No Golems and no Pets make Homer something something... Oh, wait.
Since there is no Golem Creation or Pet Raising, Produce is now pretty
much just used for Tempering, whereas they had little to do with Tempering
in Legend of Mana.
While Sword of Mana has 16 different Vegetables and 16 different Fruits,
Legend of Mana actually had 37 total Produce. The Produce missing in action
are Dialaurel, Gold Clover, Mush-in-a-Box, Pear o'Heels, and Sweet Moai.
The absence of the Dialaurel and Gold Clover means all four suits aren't
represented (Heart Mint and Spade Basil remain). Also, while there IS a
Mush-in-a-Box in Sword of Mana, it's really the Toadstoolshed. The real
Mush-in-a-Box actually looked like a Mushroom Jack-in-a-Box.
Also, for some reason they decided to drop the punniness of Apricat and
Squalphin, choosing instead to name them Kittypie and Dolphin Squash,
respectively. The Squalphin change in particular is pretty vexing.
