we'll be glad to make fun of you
in a nutshell: Move around, punch other guy, don't get punched
the red bar is your Standing Up Meter, cause when you get punched it goes
down and then you can't stand up anymore
the blue bar is your Tired Meter. swing your arms around like an idiot and
it goes down really fast so you can't punch. you probably have one of these
in real life too but you can't see it.
left & right = slide around the ring
A = right arm punch
B = left arm punch
forward + A or B = straight punch
SUPER PUNCHES!
hold R + forward, press A or B = hook punch
hold R + up, press A or B = uppercut
PROTIP: the uppercut sucks. don't use it
hold L to dodge, then move the control pad around to make Rocky look drunk
or press any direction to dodge that way
if you get knocked down, press A and B really fast to get back up. get
knocked down three times in a match and you lose.
>> Movie Mode
Be Rocky and fight through the guys from the movies, plus around 2 billion
other punks you've never seen before. do mini-games between fights to
make Rocky stronger
>> Exhibition
Fight a match with any guy against any computer guy.
>> Knockout
Tournament mode that gets unlocked when you beat the game.
>> Versus
Two-player mode with the Game Link Cable.
>> Load Game
Load a game. What the hell did you think?
As has already been mentioned, this game includes several billion characters that
you've never heard of plus 5 you have, several of whom somehow slip past you in
the ranks so you have to face them again, in piston honda fashion. Anyway, here
is a list of characters and their stats.
Rocky Balboa I:
This is the Italian Stallion you all know and love. At this point he's just a bum.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 4
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Spider Rico:
Earned his name because he has the power and stamina of a spider. I assume.
Strength: 2
Stamina: 3
Speed: 2
Defense: 1.5
Dipper Brown:
Some guy with 70s hair. I bet you couldn't tell by his name that he's black.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 3.5
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 2
Ernie Roman
A guy with huge sideburns who was slightly better than I expected him to be after
those pushovers Dipper and Spider. He still sucks though.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 3
Speed: 3.5
Defense: 3.5
Apollo Creed
Heavyweight champion of the world Apollo Creed is flashy and full of personality
in the cutscene. When you fight him he pretty much sucks like everyone else though.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 3.5
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 4
Mac Lee Green
In all honesty I cannot remember anything about this guy. For fun we can pretend that
he is like Little Mac.
Strength: 2
Stamina: 3
Speed: 3
Defense: 3
Buddy Shaw
In the Rocky GBA locker room he earned the nickname "The Goofy One" because of his pear
shaped head.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 3.5
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 2.5
Billy Snow
I dunno, some boxer. I think he was from England or something but who knows.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 2.5
Speed: 3.5
Defense: 3
Apollo Creed II
According to the movie, he was upgraded with laser cannons and heat seeking missiles.
For some strange reason they chose not to acknowledge this in the game, so he seems to
be a lot like his predecessor, Apollo Creed I.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 4
Speed: 3
Defense: 4
Big Yank Ball
I really don't know where to begin on this one. I played the entire final round with my
eyes closed and still beat him. The only other boxer I've ever done that with is Glass
Joe, so that should tell you something. And the guy's name, I can't explain what that's
all about.
Strength: 3.5
Stamina: 2.5
Speed: 5
Defense: 4.5
Joe Chan
This is the game's token asian character. Amazingly enough he doesn't really look that
much like Bruce Lee, which would have even fit alright considering the percentage of 70s
hair this game has. He's pretty aggressive, so I bet the backing up technique would work
well on him. I don't know for sure though cause I hadn't invented it at that point.
Strength: 2
Stamina: 4.5
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 2.5
Vito Soto
I don't know what he is, but he was pretty fast. I didn't care because I wanted to get
to Clubber Lang and was wondering how many nameless weirdos I had to beat before I got
to face him.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 3
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 3
Clubber Lang
This is really the highlight of the game. After wading through the whole game I finally
got to fight Mr. T. It was soon discovered by my associate that he is vulnerable to the
Mr. T attack, hence the name. Unfortunately this is Clubber Lang's only appearance in
the whole movie mode, even though some guys show up more than once.
Strength: 5
Stamina: 3
Speed: 5
Defense: 4.5
Big Chuck Smith
I don't know what this guy's story is, but his face reminds me of a guy where I work.
So that's kind of funny.
Strength: 4
Stamina: 3
Speed: 3.5
Defense: 3.5
Brian Buchanan
Yet another fighter about whom I really have nothing worthwhile to say.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 4.5
Speed: 4
Defense: 3.5
Joe Zack
I think this guy might have been another one of those aggressive fighters but I can't
remember. Judging by his stats he looks pretty pathetic. If the Mr. T Strategy or
Backup Strategy doesn't work, just use the The Strategy. That's really a description
for all characters in the game I guess.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 2.5
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 2.5
Ivan Drago
A Russian fighter whose strength is much greater than yours. The Strategy works pretty
well on him though.
Strength: 3.5
Stamina: 5
Speed: 3
Defense: 5
Phil Rodgers
Sort of a skinny Mr. T except without the ass-kicking qualities.
Strength: 2.5
Stamina: 3
Speed: 3.5
Defense: 3
Tim Simms
Aside from pointing out that he has kind of a dumb name, I don't know what to say about
him. Oh right, this is the guy I invented the Backup Strategy on.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 3.5
Speed: 5
Defense: 3.5
Union Cane
This guy is the first guy to offer a real challenge, and probably the guy with the biggest
flattop. Once or twice I actually had less health than he did. Don't let that deter you
though, the strategies still work fairly well.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 3
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 2.5
Tommy Gunn
Aside from having a clever firearm reference as a name, he's also pretty ugly. You fight
him in an unofficial brawl on the street by the Chicago L. Because there's no time limit,
he can't get saved by the bell. Somehow though, there's still a 10 count. Anyway, knock
him down about 4 times and that will probably be all you need.
Strength: 3.5
Stamina: 3
Speed: 2.5
Defense: 5
ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS
The game designers decided to be cute and let you choose from any of Rocky's several
hairstyles throughout the 70s and 80s by giving you a bunch of different versions of
him to choose from, as well as an additional version of one of your other favourite
characters. Here they are:
Rocky Balboa II
In versus or exhibition mode you can use this upgraded model of Rocky.
Strength: 3
Stamina: 4.5
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Rocky Balboa III
A third Rocky, what can I say. I guess it's if you didn't think the game was Rocky
enough yet.
Strength: 3.5
Stamina: 4.5
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Rocky Balboa IV
I'm getting tired of describing the same guy over and over.
Strength: 4
Stamina: 5
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Rocky Balboa V
Why do his defense and speed still suck so bad? (hint: he got old)
Strength: 4.5
Stamina: 5
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Rocky Statue
I must have missed the movie where Rocky turns into living stone, but the game
captures all the thrill and excitement you'd expect from a golem version of your
favourite pugilist.
Strength: 5
Stamina: 5
Speed: 3
Defense: 2.5
Apollo Max
Like Pepsi, the creators of this game decided that taking something people like
and turning it blue makes it 100 times better. Apollo Max is the result of their
colour-changing antics
Strength: 4.5
Stamina: 5
Speed: 5
Defense: 4
Here's what you really want, we both know it. And you probably won't find this
primo info in Gamepro unless they rip off our guide. Jerkholes.
THE STRATEGY
First is the incredible strategy that is so rad and unbeatable that #abobo
squad just calls it The Strategy.
>> hold L so your guy goes into dodge mode
>> hold back so he leans back
>> wait for the other guy to punch, he'll miss if he's far enough away
>> drop the dodge and press forward+punch to nail the sucka
>> repeat until other guy is beaten royally
THE MR. T STRATEGY
another strategy discovered when fighting Clubber Lang is this trick that gets
named after Mr. T
>> first do The Strategy above until the other guy's blue bar goes down a lot
>> now move forward a step and do a R+forward+punch hook which will hit
>> take another small step forward and do another punch
>> keep doing step-punches and the other guy will eventually fall down
>> if done on Clubber Lang, immediately realize that it's just a game since
you could NEVER beat up Mr. T in real life
>> Mr. T rules
LEE'S BACKUP STRATEGY
lee made up this one so he gets kudos, even though he says it doesn't really
work all the time. there are some guys that keep pressing forward and make
the top 2 Strategies hard to work, so lee made up this one for fighting
guys like Joe Chan
>> keep walking backwards
>> when the other guy gets close enough, do a forward+punch move before
he hits you
TRAIN ROCKY STRONG
in Movie mode, make Rocky really strong fast by doing the Pads training after
each fight. it's really easy like a simon says game and you can get up to 8%
more Arm stat each time.
PROTIP: in Pads training, always hold right cause every move needs it
Heavy Bag training is pretty easy too, just do all the moves on the list
order to get points. do the whole list again and again for lots more points
Speed Bag sucks and is hard, so #abobo squad prohibits its use.
There's Auto Train too, which does any of the three games automatically but
doesn't give you maximum points.
