   0.1 - About the series

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

The Kawa No Nushi Tsuri series is a long running fishing game published
in Japan, starting with the Super Famicon version in 1990. The games
have been published on the Super Famicon, Gameboy, Gameboy Color,
Personal Computer (PC), N64, and Sony Playstation systems.

English versions of the game are lumped into the Legend of the River
King series and are published by Natsume and Ubi Soft. The English
adaptations have only been released on the N64 and Gameboy/Gameboy Color
consoles.

KnNT5 is the 3rd game in the series released for the Gameboy console.
KnNT3 was released in 1997 and then released in English as Legend of
The River King in 1999. KnNT4 came out in 1999 and then released as
Legend of the River King 2 in 2001. Since their appears to be a 2 year
time gap between the Japanese and English releases, I would guess that
KnNT5 might be released in English in 2004.

There was one more KnNT game released for Gameboy, but it was more of
a spin-off side adventure then a quest to catch the River King. Don't
expect to see KnNT:Kite No Bouken in English anytime soon.

If you want to import KnNT5 there are several import shops online where
you can purchase it from overseas. Be prepared to pay a hefty price
PLUS shipping. We all know it's worth it though; come on, it's a FISHING
game! Everybody LOVES fishing games!

There is also a strategy guide published by Koei. Yes I own that one
too. I'm such a fishing dork ;) It's ISBN number is 4-87719-971-3 if you
wanted to import it from your local Japanese bookstore.

   1 - Game introduction

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

KnNT5 is a very colorful game. The fish look more realistic then their
Gameboy Color versions. Compared to the earlier versions though, this
game is short in playing-time. There are some extra tasks to do once you
beat the game so depending on how much work you want to put into the
tasks, it could be longer.

KnNT3 (River King 1) had 40 fish to catch. KnNT4 (River King 2) more
then doubled the number of fish that were cacheable, putting its fish
total to 102. One would assume that the Gameboy Advance version would
have even *more* fish, but sadly KnNT5 only had 49 fish to catch. The
fish are also no longer bait-picky and will generally bite at anything
you throw at them. I've been able to catch most of the fish in the game
by using Worms the whole time.

The random turn-based battles are gone in KnNT5. Instead of fighting
cats and crows, you earn your experience points by fighting the hooked
fish on your line. Even if the fish gets away you'll earn a exp point
or two. You also loose hit points while you fight with the fish.

My Japanese skills aren't very fluent so the FAQ won't be word for word
but more of a summary of events in the game. I know enough to get by,
but not enough to know what each Kanji in a 10 sentence speech means.

   1.1 - Starting out

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

The game begins as the hero (you) and your Dad decide it's time to get
out of the city for a while and head to the country. The Dad introduces
the hero to Tadao, one of the local boys, and the two of them head into
the forest to fish. The local boy shows the hero how to fish and tells a
story about a River King that lives in the pond the two are at. Tadao
runs out of fishing bait so he takes off to get more while the hero
gives fishing a try. Suddenly there's a strong pull on the line and the
hero gets sucked into the pond.

When he wakes up he finds himself in a weird location with a pond in
the middle and 5 doors along the rocky wall. Suddenly he spots a lone
squirrel who proceeds to run through the first door. The hero runs after
the squirrel and eventually comes across a deserted village in the
middle of the "mysterious" forest.

After running through the village and across the wooden bridge, the
squirrel leads him to a shrine in the mountain with a lone resident.
The shrine keeper, Shizuki, says that there has been a curse placed upon
the forest and many of the residents have been turned INTO FISH! It's up
to you to fish-up the residents who live in the forest so they can
return to their human forms. Each time you save all of the people in an
area, one of the Shaman kids will give you a piece of the Legendary
fishing rod. Once you have collected all 5 pieces you can catch the
River King and then return home.

By the way, the SQUIRREL TALKS!

   1.2 - Character Information

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

The only way to return home and free the residents of the mysterious
forest is to collect the 4 pieces of the Legendary fishing rod. The
Legendary rod is used to catch the River King and without it the king
is impossible to get. Each of the 5 areas has a special Shaman "kid" who
holds a piece of what you'll need to catch the King. When you clear an
area and rescue all of the people, the Shaman Kid will give you the
piece and a Notebook for the next area.

Your sidekick throughout your journey is the talking squirrel, Kikku.
Kikku joins you at the beginning of the game and helps you collect the
pieces of the Legendary Rod. He will also give you hints as to what you
need to do next if you ever get lost. To talk to Kikku just turn around
to face him and then press the A button. Kikku will follow behind you
where ever you walk so he's kind of cute ;) Think of Kikku as your in-
game help manual.

Besides the 5 Shaman Kids there are the people who have been turned into
fish.  A few are just general no-bodies but most of them have names and
specific roles in the game. The transformed people are also not just any
fish you might find so you'll need to fish up the correct species in
order to rescue the person. Sometimes the people won't appear until you
pass through certain events or rescue a specific person.

In the forest you will meet a few talking trees and some other wild
creatures that will aid you in your quest. Some of the more.. unusual..
creatures you will meet are the mole "Barons". There are 14 Barons in
all and they will pop up out of the ground at specific times in the game
to give you advice. Unfortunately the Barons will tell you something you
can't do, or tell you something that's completely *opposite* of what you
need to do.

There are a lot more characters then the one's listed below, but these
will be the main ones you will interact with.

The game map places you at a three-quarter view, which takes some time
to get use to. Up on the directional pad actually takes you north west
instead of north like most games. One of the more annoying things I've
come across is trying to go one way and end up going the opposite
direction because of the top-down-three-quarter view. There are actually
two different ways to set your directional pad. You can switch between
them by going into your Inventory, move to your Save menu, and then
select the 1st or 2nd movement option.

(<- left) and (right ->) - Use the Left and Right shoulder buttons to
move between the 7 inventory windows. You could also use the Left and
Right buttons on the directional pad.

(food) - Eating food will regain your Hit Points that you loose from
catching fish, swimming, or falling off of cliffs ;) You can hold up to
8 stacks of food with 9 pieces of food in each stack.

(items) - Not a whole lot of stuff goes here. Mainly keys to locked
doors, your fishing basket, and rope.

(bait) - Your bait and Lures.

(equip) - There are 4 different types of fishing poles; bait rods, lure
rods, the Royal rod, and the Legendary rod. You will also have your
fishing line and the lure reels here. Press Down on the directional pad
to move between rod, line, and reel screens. At one point in time during
the game you'll get to use the special Oven Kingdom Royal rod combo, but
you don't get to keep it until after you catch the River King.

(fish) - See what fish you have caught. When you fill up your basket
then you'll have to go to the Fish Market and sell them.

(note) - Each area has a Notebook that holds a map and information on
where you've caught the fish. When you've caught all of the different
kinds of fish in an area, the Notebook will have the word CLEAR on it to
let you know you've completed it. There are 5 Notebooks, one for each
area.

(save) - Saving the game is slow and can take up to 30 seconds or so.
You can have 1 save game. You also have the option here to change the
control pad direction.

(Hit Points) - Determine how long your fishing line can go when the fish
is fighting you. The more HP you have, the longer your line can go.

(Money) - Selling your fish gets you some $$$ to buy new fishing rods,
bait, food, etc. Some areas will make you pay to sleep in the Inn to
regain your Hit Points so make sure you've got some.

(Skill Points) - Not sure completely, has something to do with the bait
and lures.

(Power) - The stronger you are the easier it is to reel in the fish.

(Current Level) - There are 30 levels total.

(Exp Points) - How much experience points you have earned. You won't see
how much exp you need to reach each level but you'll see how much you
have earned so far. You get exp points by catching fish. Even if the
fish gets away you'll earn a point or to. See section 2.3 for info.

   2.2 - How to fish

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

When you first get sucked into the mysterious forest you don't have any
fishing equipment. After you talk to Shizuki, the shrine keeper in
Nushikiri Village, he will give you your first small bait rod, some
line, and a few earthworms. The first thing you're going to have to do
is rescue one of the transformed villagers.

Your character doesn't automatically equip the fishing gear. You have
to press the Select button to bring up the inventory menu, then press
the Left or Right shoulder buttons to get to the Equipment menu. Once
there just press the A button.

The first window that comes up shows your fishing poles. If you keep
pressing the Down button you'll reach the screen where the fishing line
is kept. Down below that are the reels you'll use once you get a lure
rod. The last screen is where your fishing hooks for the bait rod are
store. To equip a fishing combo you have to pick each appropriate item.

Bait Rod - rod, line, hook
Lure Rod - rod, line, reel

When you switch between rod-types you have to re-equip the rest of the
combo every time.

Once you have your fishing rod combo selected, press the Left shoulder
button to move to the bait inventory window. Here you select the bait
that you'll use with your fishing rod. Select the bait you want to use
and then press the B button to leave the inventory windows.

When you're ready to fish, walk up to the water's side and then press
the A button. In some locations you can fish while standing in the
water. After pressing A to bring out the fishing rod, press A again to
cast your line. You can direct which way you want the line to cast in by
pressing the directional pad. If you don't want the line to cast out as
far as it can then don't hold the A button down for as long.

Once your line has landed in the water all you have to do is sit and
wait. If you're using the Bait rods then you just let the water current
take your bait along until a fish begins to circle around the bait. If
you're using a Lure rod then you can press the B button to reel the line
back in closer to you. In both modes you can press the A button to
cancel fishing and bring your line back.

When a fish begins to circle your bait you'll here a chime sound. Once
the bait sinks into the water then you want to press the B button to
start fighting with the fish!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^     Under water you'll see your fishing line
----/     and the fish that you've hooked. At
----/          first the fish will be swimming away
    ><}}}}'>---/               from you but it will eventually stop.
When the fish stops that's your cue to
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _     start pressing (and holding down) the A
_ - _ - _ - _ - _ _ - _ _ -     or B button to reel it in.

Sometimes the fish will swim up to the top of the water and splash it's
head along the surface. If the fish does this successfully your hook or
lure will dislodge from it's mouth and the fish gets away. You can
prevent the hook from coming out by pressing the B button to tighten
your line while the fish is splashing around. Don't forget to release
the B button when it stops splashing and swims on! Pressing B or A while
the fish is swimming away will cause the fish to stop and possibly get
free of your line.

You may have to let the fish swim away and then reel it back in several
times, but eventually you'll catch the fish. Kikku will tell you what
kind of fish it is, it's length, whether it's small or large, and if you
want to keep the fish or if you want to release it. What the point is to
releasing the fish once you've caught it I don't know. What ever you
decide, Kikku will then tell you how many hp you lost during the battle
and how much experience you earned. If you earned enough to level up, he
will tell you how much your stats went up.

   2.3 - Leveling Up

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

As the game progresses, you'll find that your level determines how
successful you are at catching the more difficult fish. If you're level
is fairly low when you reach Fairy Town, you're going to have a hard
time catching anything! Luckily you automatically earn experience points
when you fish, so you most likely be at a high enough level for the
areas you go into.

Whenever you catch a fish, you will loose hit points from the underwater
"battle" but you'll gain experience points. When you have gained enough
then you level up, earning more hit points, skill points, and power. Hit
points determine how far your line will last when the fish swims away
underwater. The skill points are .. for something... and the Power
points determine how easy it is for you to reel the fish back in.

To get to your inventory screen just press the Select button. The game
will pause and then you can decide what you want. To view one of the
windows in the inventory screen just press the A button. You can rotate
through the windows by pressing the Left or Right shoulder buttons or
the Left and Right directional buttons. To use or equip an item you have
highlighted in your inventory just press the A button.

   3.1 - Food

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

Different foods will regain different amounts of hit points. You can buy
food from the General stores. If you don't want to buy food you can find
it for free on the path through the Mysterious Forest. To look for free
food just walk along the path and then press the A button to squat. You
will find nothing (which happens a lot) or something to eat.

If you're lucky you may find a Nut. Nuts are *very* rare and are located
in specific areas in the game. When you eat a Nut one of your stats will
raise, depending on the color of the Nut. Red nuts raise your total hit
points, green nuts raise your skill, and yellow nuts raise your
strength.

Not everything you find in the forest is edible. Some foods will have
??? in their name. Those typically are *bad* for you so don't eat them.
Instead you can sell them at the General stores!

       3.3 - Tackle

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

You can either buy your bait ("esa") and lures or you can find them on
the ground. Why buy bait when you can find it for free!

To find bait just walk around pressing the A button. Your character will
squat down like he is searching the ground. You'll find bait or you
won't find anything at all. The bait will automatically be placed into
your inventory and you can have a LOT of bait. If you're lucky you can
find a Spinner Bait fishing lure, but those are usually hidden behind
signs and other objects.

Most of the time you're going to have to buy your lures though. Your
lures are reusable so you don't have to use one up every time you catch
a fish. The bait is used once the fish is caught so you'll have to have
lots of bait around.

There are two types of bait that you can't find on the ground; The Bean
bait and the Scatter bait. Bean bait is just like using Bugs or worms,
but Scatter bait is suppose to lure the fish closer to your hook as
though it has a larger "yumminess" radius then regular bait. You use
the Scatter bait before you cast your line and it's suppose to draw more
fish to your hook but I haven't seen it work in that way. The Bean bait
will be in the normal Bait inventory window but the Scatter bait is
placed in the Items inventory window.

   3.4 - Rod, reels, etc

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

There are 4 different sets of fishing equipment you'll be able to use.

- Bait equipment
- Lure equipment
- Legendary equipment
- Royal equipment

You'll mainly use the Bait and Lure equipment. The Legendary equipment
is mainly for catching the River King. The Royal equipment is used to
catch a Pirarucu and then returned to it's owners. Once you beat the
game you can return to the Oven Kingdom and receive the Royal equipment
as a gift.

Each group of equipment has several components; rod, line, reel/hook.
You have to select each piece you want to use to make a complete fishing
pole. Each time you switch poles you have to re-equip the rest of the
components.

When you start out you're given a small Bait rod, Bait line, and a hook.
Luckily you're not going to need to buy any more hooks. The hooks you
can find on the ground for free, just like the earthworms and frogs. The
rest of the parts you'll have to buy.

   4.0 - Fish

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

There are only 49 fish in the game, which is a small amount compared to
KnNT4's 102 fish. The areas of water where you have to fish are also
smaller then in earlier versions, making it easier to catch all the fish
in a specific area. With all the different kinds of bait and lure, you
would assume that each fish likes certain things but I've been able to
catch everything using Worms and a Spinner lure. Except for the River
King himself; he needs the Legendary equipment.

The only truly important factor is your hit points. If your hp are too
low, then the fish "runs" farther then it would if you were at full
health. Your fishing line also runs shorter, making it easier for the
fish to reach the end faster and get away. Remember, whenever you fish
you'll loose hit points!

Note: Max sizes are not complete.

Pirarucu
- max size: 2m 13cm

- It's summer vacation time and your dad decides it's a good time to
take a trip out to a rural village. You're not too excited to go, but
you have no say in the matter. While there your dad introduces you to
Tadao, one of the local boys.

- The two of you head out to the swampland to fish in one of the ponds.
Tadao explains that the pond the two of you are at is said to be the
home of a great River King. Tadao runs out of worms so he wanders off
to get some more. While you wait for him to return, you cast your line
into the water. There's a bite on your line but the fish is so
powerful that you are sucked into the middle of the pond.

scattered around in the game and will increase your hit points (red),

- The squirrel will lead you to the village. You will see him cross a
bridge that is located in the northern half of the map. You can explore
the houses if you want, but you won't find anyone.

- Follow the squirrel across the bridge and into a cave. Inside the
cave you'll meet Shizuki, who explains that the River King has begun
to cause them problems. Shizuki asks if you would help to catch the
River King. Each area has a Shaman Kid who holds a piece of the
Legendary fishing equipment and you will receive the piece after you
have helped the Shaman Kid in the area. Shizuki then gives you a small
bait rod, some hooks, some line, and some worms.

- Leave the cave and the squirrel will follow you. Turns out the
squirrel's name is Kikku and it talks. Kikku will follow you around and
help you converse with the residents of the Mysterious Forest.

- After talking with Kikku, head to the stream east of the cave entrance
and equip your small bait rod (and other equipment pieces) and catch a
fish. The first fish you'll catch, most likely an Amago, will turn into
the owner of the General Store (Yorozu-ya). After he thanks you, return
back to Shizuki who explains that the King has turned a lot of people
into fish.

Note - Whenever you rescue someone from their fish-form, they will
teleport away. If you want to talk to the person then you'll have to
find them.

- Head back out to the streams and keep fishing. The next one you'll
catch will be the Fish Market (Sakana-ya) owner, who is in the form of
another Amago. With him free now you can sell the fish you catch.

- After catching the Market owner try to catch a Wakasagi and you'll
find Kiyou. She lives in the house south of the Inn. You can find a
Wakasagi in either in the Village map (pre-bridge) or Mountain map
(post-bridge).

- The next fish you'll want to catch is a Silver Carp. They're located
in the waters east of the Fish Market in the village. The fish will turn
into a "large man" and teleports away.

- After that you'll want to find 2 Iwana's. They're back in the Mountain
map by the rapids in the middle of the area. The two fish will turn into
average villagers who hang out between the Fish Market and the General
Store.

- Next you'll need an Itou, which you're *not* going to find in the
streams around Nushikiri Village and Shizuki's cave. You will need to
go visit Kiyou in her house just south of the Inn.

Note - Remember that "south" isn't your normal south. Since the game is
at an angle, south is actually a normal south-west direction. See
section 2.0 for a map of how the directions work.

- Talk to Kiyou in her house and she'll point to the fish tank. Inside
the tank you'll find the Itou, who transforms back to the old man who
runs the Inn. Even when the owner is changed back into a human, the Inn
is still a free place to sleep. You'll also be able to catch wild Itou
in the Mountain area map now.

- Walk back to the Mountain map and past Shizuki's cave to find a shack
with the "large man" near it. His name is Gonsaku and he's blocking the
entrance to a pool surrounded by a fence.

- Go back to talk with Kiyou. She'll have a talk with Gonsaku. When you
return to talk wit him, he'll move away from the fence so you can enter
the pond area. Once he's left you can fish up Hatsune's mother
(Cherry Salmon) and then Hatsune herself (Yamame).

- Now that everyone is safe, go talk to Shizuki, who will give you the
Legendary fishing rod, 100 G, and the Notebook for Oven Kingdom.

Note - The 2 "Loop" sections on the map are infinite looping paths. The
screen will just repeat itself over and over until you go back the way
you came.

-The Oven Kingdom is very hot. It's also very *expensive! If you go to
the Bar and ask for some water, the bartender will want you to pay 200 G
for a glass! Kikku thinks something's strange.

- After the two of you leave the Bar, you'll find a girl being chased by
soldiers! She'll hide behind a building while you persuade the guards to
look in another direction. After the soldiers leave she'll thank you and
then run off.

- Keep exploring the Oven Kingdom and talk with the guards at the castle
gates. They won't let you into the castle via the front door, but head
to the side entrance and talk to the guard there. He'll let you in but
you need to get him a Freshwater Ray (Tansui Ei).

- You'll find the Freshwater Rays by the waterfall in the southwest
corner of the map. After you catch one, return to the Guard and give it
to him. He'll leave so you can go through the side entrance.

- Once you get into the castle courtyard you'll see a boy by one of the
entrances. The boy thinks you're suspicious looking but Kikku sprints
into the castle and the two of you chase after him.

- The boy catches up to Kikku and introduces himself as Jimotto. While
the two of you are chatting, you overhear the King and his advisor
talking about a great scam they're pulling. Jimotto can't believe it
and runs out of the castle.

- After Jimotto leaves, feel free to explore the building. The castle is
2 stories tall with a 3rd staircase that is locked by a door. On the
main floor you'll find the King's chambers. Go talk to the King and his
advisor, who welcomes you to his kingdom and mentions how wealthy they
are. There's also a kitchen to explore and one of the pesky barons, the
Wonderful Baron, pays you a visit in the guard room. The shed outside
is locked.

- Once back outside, it's time to find out where Jimotto ran off to.
Head for the house next to the one the Barons won't let you enter. At
the door, the court (royal) doctor greet you at the door and asks what
your business is. Sneaky Kikku runs past him too and you hear Jimotto
squeak from inside the house.

- Turns out that Jimotto is actually the Prince of the Oven Kingdom!
Jimotto wants to know what's going on and asked the doctor to help him.
The doctor suggests that you find a girl name Akira.

- Leave the doc's house and right outside next to the tattoo parlor is
the girl you helped before. She just happens to be the girl you're
looking for.

- Akira explains that she thinks the large fish in the water has
something to do with the imposter. She tried to catch it with her
fishing equipment but it was too powerful. She says your fishing pole
couldn't even catch it if you tried. Akira heads back to Doc's house.

- As soon as she leaves two pesky guards show back up looking for her.
They thought they saw here standing right in front of you but she's not
there now. As you're talking with the guards, Jimotto runs up and the
guards ask him what he's doing here. He angrily tells them he left on
his own, scolds them, and then tells them to hurry back with him to the
castle. All 3 of them leave.

- Kikku suggests you find Akira again, who is in with the Doctor. The
two of them say the King is a great fisherman and he owns a fishing
equipment collection. The Prince might have more information.

- Back to the castle you go. While looking for Jimotto, Kikku hears his
voice coming through the floor. Go into the guard room and find the
staircase. You'll find the entrance east of where the beds are, right in
the corner of the room.

- The staircase leads to the guard's jail, where Jimotto is locked up!
Head up to the 3rd floor of the castle and you'll see a shinny object
sitting on the ground. It's the key to the jail cell. Press A while
standing on the spot to pick up the jail keys. Go back and unlock the
door to let Jimotto out.

- Back outside, Jimotto explains that the King isn't his dad and his
true dad has been changed into a fish. All the villagers have been
ordered to catch the "fish" by the fake-King, so they're all out
fishing. Find Jimotto again, who has caught up with the fake-King on the
riverbank. The advisor says when they catch the big fishy King they're
going to eat him! Fake-King doesn't know how Jimotto got out of jail,
but it's not going to matter anymore.

- Jimotto tells you that they have some fishing equipment that you can
use to fish up the true-king. He gives you the key to the equipment
room, which is the locked shed in the castle courtyard. Inside you'll
find the Royal Fishing Rod, Royal Line, Royal Reel, and Royal Lure.

- The fish you're looking to catch is literally 3 times as large as any
other fish swimming in the area. He's in no specific location, so you'll
have to wander around until you see the huge shadow in the water. Catch
him and it'll transform back into the true-King.

- Once the King and Jimotto are reunited, the villagers realize that the
other guy isn't the real king. The King calls the guards, who arrest the
imposter and the advisor. They're downstairs in the castle jail if you
ever want to visit them.

- Back in the throne room, the King wants to reward you. He offers you
the Solar Stone, 1000 G, or a set of 3 Strength-Up Nuts. Even if you
choose the stone he won't let you have it. He also takes back his Royal
fishing equipment.

- After you receive your reward, go back upstairs. The Doc and Akira
have their old rooms back in the castle. Akira, being a Shaman Kid,
gives you the Legendary Reel and the book to the 3rd area, Coldpack.

- Now that the true King has returned, all of the shop prices have
returned to normal. Walk back to the entrance to the forest and you'll
see the 3rd door has now opened.

- As you walk towards Coldpack, a tree will stop you and start up a
conversation. The tree will ask you where you're going and where you
came from, which Kikku replies with an answer for, but the tree just
will *not* leave you alone! Every time you start down the path to
Coldpack, the tree will stop you and asks questions.

- Go back to the previous screen and talk with the monkey sitting along
the side of the path. He says he's heard of a small bird that talks that
might be of some help. Another bird comes walking back from the tree's
direction and starts complaining how the tree won't let him by either.

- The big bird talks of the small talking bird too, then runs off in
the direction of the Forest Entrance. Kikku thinks that a constantly
talking bird could be good company for a tree that's constantly asking
questions.

- Head back the way you came and walk to the bulletin board. Take a
right and walk to a dead end, where you'll find the little bird. Kikku
explains the problem with the tree that won't let anyone walk by.

- The little bird heads back to the obnoxious tree and begins to
converse with it. After they're finished the tree has no problems
allowing you to walk by, since it's preoccupied with talking to the
little bird.

- Now that you've finally reached Coldpack, the weather has taken a bad
turn. There is a very strong snow storm blowing! Not even the General
Store will open it's doors to let you in out of the cold. Luckily you do
eventually find someone who let's you inside her house. The girl is
impressed that you somehow plowed your way though the snow storm. She
asks you to rest for the rest of the day.

- The next morning the snow storm has left. The girl says her name is
Doochi and explains how the school kids and their teacher, Panput, have
disappeared. She tells you go to check with Touma.

- Go to the hotel and talk with the Cook. He's in need of some fish.
Sell him some fish that you brought with you from the Oven Kingdom. If
you don't have any fish you'll need to get some. The cook will happily
take your fish into the back.

- Once the Cook leaves, the Hotel Man calls for Touma. He comes out and
introduces himself. He explains the problems with Panput and the
missing students.

- Go back to the General Store and the owner will say he now has a rope
for sale. Buy it for 500 G.

- After to leave the store, the Master Baron pops up out of the ground.
He happens to show you exactly where you can use that rope. Walk over to
the spot and a message will appear asking if you want to go down.

- At the bottom of the rope is a river where you can catch fish if you
want. The Cook at the hotel isn't ready for more fish yet so you won't
be able to sell him any that you catch in the river. Might as well go
back up the cliff.

- Check out the Sauna next to the hotel. The man inside says the frozen
ice on the lake prevents anyone from fishing in it. The sauna stones are
nice and warm though! Maybe Kikku shouldn't of been so curious!

- After the villager inside the sauna reminds you not to touch the hot
stones, he wonders if they can be used on the frozen lake. He decides to
give it a try.

- Meet back up with him on the surface of the frozen lake, across the
bridge by Doochi's house. The lake is too big for the stones to melt the
ice.

- In order to melt the ice you need something bigger. Didn't the King
offer you a Solar Stone as a reward? Go back to the Oven Kingdom.

- King is glad to see you and doesn't mind allowing you to borrow their
Solar Stone, but he wants something in return. The King wants to eat a
delicious fish, but not one from their local area.

- Run back to Coldpack and use your rope to get down to the river. Catch
any one of the 5 breeds of fish and take it back to the King. He gladly
takes your fish and gives you the key to the Solar Shrine.

- The shrine is upstairs on the 2nd floor. Unlock the door and collect
the Solar Stone. Go back to Coldpack and return to the lake. When you
stand on the ice, Kikku suggests you use the Stone. The ice melts and
now you can fish in the lake.

- There are 4 people inside of the lake, and naturally you have to fish
them up in the exact order; Arctic Cha, Rainbow Trout, Rainbow Trout,
and a Sturgeon.

- Now that everyone is back to normal, talk to Touma, who has moved from
the Hotel into Doochi's house. He'll thank you for saving the school and
gives you the notebook to the next area. Touma will also give you the
Legendary fishing line.

- Walk back out to the forest entrance and the green door will be
unlocked. On the path to Koko Natsu are a pair of weasels. They want a
Koi before you can pass by them. If you talk to Kikku, he mentions you
can find them in Nushikiri Village.

- Head back to the first area. Hatsune's mom has fallen ill and Hatsune
has no one to help her. Alert Gonsaku to their situation and he'll move
off of the mountain down to the village to help Hatsune. Gonsaku will
mention a spot near his cabin where you'll need a rope to climb.

- Go back to Gonsaku's cabin and you'll see some wooden boards on the
ground. Use the rope and climb up the cliff, where you'll find a pond
that has the last 3 fish you need in order to Clear the Nushikiri
Village notebook. Don't forget to catch a Koi! If you take a swim down
the waterfall instead of climbing down the rope, you'll take about 30
damage.

- Take your new Koi back to the weasels. The brown weasel will take the
Koi and allow you to pass. If you go down the Dead End path you'll meet
up with another weasel. If you squat on the ground next to him you'll
find a green Skill Up Nut.

- Upon entering Koko Natsu, the Hyper Baron will pop out of the ground
and tell you there's no where to buy fishing equipment here. He really
meant to say that you can't *sell* your fish in this area. The owner of
the Fish Market is missing.

Note - Do *NOT* swim too far past the docks off from the main path. The
river current is very strong and you'll find yourself unable to swim
back upstream. If you get stuck, swim around until you run out of hit
points. When you wake up you'll be back on dry land.

- A boy by the name of Rao will be sitting on the dock. Talk to him and
he is wondering where his brother in law is. His sister arrives and
takes Rao home. Back in the hut, she explains they feel abandoned.

- From talking to the villagers, it seems that the women who are left
behind in the fishing village are running low on food. After talking to
the old lady in the fishing hut, go back to talk to Rao.

- After Rao, walk towards the entrance of the Forest. To the south of
the entrance is a hut. If you try to go inside, a man will appear and
blocks you from going in. Kikku calls the man "strange" but he finds the
squirrel amusing. His name is Angus and he invites you into his house.
Angus tells some story that Kikku just doesn't believe.

- Talk with some of the villagers in the farming area. One of them
mentions that Angus has a son named Keto. Another one wants you to catch
him a Bighead Carp fish before he'll talk.

- You can find the Bighead Carp by the docks and the farming area. Once
you catch one, return to the farmer. Now he wants a Aouo! You'll find
those large fish closer to Angus' hut. Once you give the farmer his
fish, he leaves to go talk with Angus.

- Return to Angus and he decides to speak truthfully. Just as he begins
his story, another person enters the hut. His name is Gouka and he calls
Agnus "boss". After a short conversation with Angus, Gouka leaves. Angus
asks you to investigate the disappearances.

- The old lady in the fishing section has some information for you.
After you leave, Kikku thinks you should go back and talk with Rao's
sister.

- She babbles something about the men in the fishing section. Lots of
Kanji.

- Rao has moved his location to behind Angus' hut. He says everyone is
trying to help now!

- After Rao leaves, Kikku suggests you talk to Angus. He shows you a
boat that can take you into the fast-moving water. Angus will take you
down south to the previously inaccessible area. If you talk to him again
once you get there, he'll take you even further in (answer 1). Answer 2
takes you back to the dock. Answer 3 cancels talking to him.

- Now you get to save the missing villagers. Remember they'll only
appear in order! You'll need to catch a Silver Shark, Red Alowana,
Kissing Gourami, Knife Fish (Keto, Angus' son), and then a Shark Catfish
(Rao's bro-in-law).

Note - If you have any problems finding the fish, go sleep for the night
at the first hut in the farming area. That will repopulate the fish to
the south.

- After you collect the villagers, Angus thanks you and takes you back
to shore. Rao runs up to the two of you and thanks you for rescuing his
sister's husband. Angus then leaves to go welcome his own son back.
Gouka walks up to you, notices you have all the other Shaman Kids'
items, and gives you his Legendary Lure and the book for the next area.

                                               Fairy Town

- When walking to Fairy Town you'll meet up with some trees. One of them
says you look funny. They're not very nice trees! Kikku tells them off
though. Phear the squirrel!

- At the dead end you'll find a Strength-up Nut on the ground.

- The next tree you meet is a lot nicer. You don't even have to talk to
it if you don't want to.

- Once you reach the town, you'll notice a girl dressed in purple down
by the fountain. Her name is Emett and she says everyone is gossiping
about Yokanan falling into the river. He was suppose to meet her there
at the Plaza, but she's still waiting.

- If you walk over to the open market area, you'll notice a fortune
teller's tent. When you go inside you'll meet Haruki, the last Shaman
Kid.

- Return back to Emett, who says she's still waiting for Yokanan.

- The mansion across the river from the Plaza is where Emett lives. Go
there and you'll learn from the maid that her aristocratic father is
trying to get her married. Unfortunately for Emett, it's not to the
person she's in love with.

- Go back to the Plaza and talk with Emett again. Yokanan still hasn't
come to meet up with her. She suggests you talk with the squirrels.

- Tamia and her fiancee (the squirrels) haven't seen anything. If you
go back to Haruki and ask him about the villagers, he'll mention Yokanan
as being missing.

- Return to Emett's mansion and enter the room to the northeast of the
front door. Inside the room is Emett's dad and another man. Emett then
comes into the room and the extra man introduces himself as Sanchiriko.
Emett's dad is happy and says that Sanchiriko will be staying with them
for a little while. Looks like he's found her a suitor. Emett is not
happy and leaves the room.

- Back upstairs, Emett is tired of the aristocratic lifestyle and wants
to escape from it. After a while she thanks you for helping her calm
down.

- When you walk out the door of the mansion, you'll hear a splash! Kikku
has no idea what it is, but walk to the side and you'll see Haruki in a
boat with Emett. She jumped out the window! Haruki doesn't understand
why she did it, but decides to take her to his home.

- At Haruki's place, Emett gets to rest. Haruki says that her dad has
never really approved of Yokanan and he's been transformed into a fish.
Unfortunately he doesn't know which one! The Fish Market owner has a
list of all the fish in the area. Once you get the list, he'll be
waiting for you in his tent.

- The Fish Market owner is Yokanan's dad! You tell him that Haruki needs
the fish list, but he says that he needs an Alligator Gaa before he can
finish it.

- Directly south east of Yokanan's dad is a patch of water. If you hug
along the wall you'll find some steps to jump on so you can cast your
fishing line over the cliff's side. The Alligator Gaa can be found in
there.

- Give Yokanan's dad the Alligator Gaa and he'll actually take the list
to Haruki for you! Walk back to Haruki's tent and the Shaman Kid will
thank you. He'll use his fortune telling skills to obtain the fish's
name, but it will take him some time.

- Head back to the mansion and you'll find Sanchiriko and her dad
arguing. He wants to know where she is, but her dad has no idea where
she has gone off to. Sanchiriko storms out angrily and returns back to
his room.

- Haruki has the fish names now. He says you need to look for a Masuki
AND a Texas [shikuriddo]. Turns out there's actually two people who have
been transformed!

- You can find the Texas [shikuriddo] in the far southeast corner, past
the Plaza with the fountain. Once you fish one up, it transforms into
Sanchiriko! The one at the mansion is an imposter!

- After Sanchiriko teleports away, head back towards the mansion. Inside
Sanchiriko yells something and then leaves. Tamia comes running in and
said her uncle saw 2 people in a boat. As Tamia tells the story, Kikku
is reminded of how the same thing happened with imposters in the Oven
Kingdom.

- Head out of the mansion to the boat house. Stand on the boat and try
to catch a Masuki. The fish has a large water-shadow so you're not going
to have any problems finding one. Once you catch the Masuki it changes
back into Yokanan.

- Back on dry land, Emett is very happy to see Yokanan again. While they
are pondering what to do next, Emett's dad exits out of the mansion and
sees her. He's happy to see that Emett's alright since she left the
mansion, but Emett doesn't give a reply. He appears to reconcile his
differences with Yokanan.

- It's wedding time! Haruki notices that you have the lure, line, reel,
and rod for catching the King. He gives you the last Notebook you'll
need in order to catch the big guy. Emett and Yokanan thank you for all
your help.

- The Innkeeper will arrive and tell you that Haruki said you needed
rest before you leave. He'll take you to the Inn, where you'll regain
your hit points.

   5.7 - The River King

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

- Now that you have all the pieces of the Legendary equipment, it's
time to put them to use. Head back out to the entrance of the forest
from Fairy Town. Once you reach the entrance, you'll see Shizuki, Akira,
Touma, and Gouka waiting for you. They'll each thank you for your hard
work and after a boring little speech, take their leave. After talking
with Kikku for a bit, you're ready to catch the King.

- Equip the Rod, Line, Reel, and Lure. Walk up to the side of the large
pond and get ready to fish! The King is the only fish swimming around in
the pond and he's absolutely huge. Toss in your line and get ready for
a fight.

- The King does like to run the line out, so check to see if you are at
full hit points (that's why Haruki requested you rest ya know!). Even
having 20 or 30 hit points less then your max can affect your chances of
catching the King. If he gets away he doesn't go far. You can still just
toss out your lure again and have him bite it. The King will also swim
up to the surface and splash his head around, so make sure you press A
or B to tighten your line while he's splashing. Remember to let go when
he's done!

- Once you catch the King it's time to go home! After a sad goodbye from
Kikku, you teleport back up out of the pond you were sucked into.

- When you wake up on the banks of the pond, your Dad is glad to see
you're alright and thanks Tadao. Your dad mentions a festival of
fishing. Oh no not more fishing!! The credits roll to save you from
another fishing adventure.

- You may have finished River King Advance, but the game isn't
completely finished. You can go back and fiddle with some of the extra
stuff to do! See section 6.0 for information.

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

After you catch the King you can replay your game. Some new options have
opened up to play! The areas are still the same and there aren't any new
fish to catch though.

Your Dad sets up a shop in a house in Fairy Town. If you go visit him
he'll sell you a Strength-Up, Skill-Up, or HP-Up Nut for 50000 G! Talk
about expensive! If you don't want to buy any nuts from him, he'll still
recharge all of your hit points as though he's an Inn.

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

In Fairy Town there were a couple of houses that had locked doors. Now
the doors are unlocked! The house behind Haruki's has a maze inside of
it! Just pick a direction to go and if you pick the right way, you can
choose again. If you pick the wrong direction you'll hear a bird noise
("squaaak!") and you'll have to start back from the very beginning.

nw, ne, ne, se, se, se, sw, sw

When you reach the end of the maze Emett will give you a HP-Up Nut. To
get back out to Fairy Town, go south west.

The house in Fairy Town closest to Haruki's is now a sound test. Just
walk up to the door and press A. You can listen to the game music.

01 - Nushikiri Village
02 - Oven Kingdom
03 - Coldpack
04 - Koko Natsu Village
05 - Fairy Town
06 - Walking through the forest
07 - King battle
08 - Ending credits
09 - Title screen
10 - (no idea...)

Selecting "End" takes you back to Fairy Town's theme music, since that's
the town you're in.

   6.3 - Battle with Tadao

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

The most challenging extra game is in Oven Kingdom. You can now enter
the house that you previously couldn't. Inside is Tadao and he's
looking for a fight! He's no pushover either! When you battle you have 3
different techniques:

Attack - Hit him with your fishing pole
Defend - Create a barrier to protect you from his attacks
   Cheer -

You'll have help from Kikku as well. After you take your turn, Kikku
will also randomly pick either to attack, regain your hp, raise your
hero points, or regain a few of your hit points. When Kikku attacks he
only does 3 or 4 damage.

Whenever you finish a turn you're awarded Hero Points. When you've
earned 100 Hero Points, you can press the B button to select a powerful
technique to use.

Super Attack - A Shaman kid will pop out and hit Tadao
   Super Force -
Super Regain - A Shaman kid will appear and regain your HP.

After you use your Super technique, your Hero Points drop back down to
zero. Earn them again by using normal techniques.

At some point after beating on Tadao for a bit, he'll summon some Oven
Kingdom guards to help him. Whenever he takes his turn, the guards will
also take a turn. The guards can...
- regain some of Tadao's hit points (10 - 15 hp)
- attack you with water (3 - 5 damage)
- lower your Hero Points with fog (grr!!!! minus 20 - 30!!)

After you beat Tadao, a treasure chest will appear. Inside you'll find..

(If I tell you then you'll never want to beat him! It's nothing super
 spectacular though.)

   6.4 - Forest Nut locations

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

There are 4 kinds of Forest Nuts you can find in the game. Red ones
raise your total hit points, yellow ones raise your strength, and green
ones raise your skill level. There are also brown nuts that regain your
hit points by 20, just like eating food.

(there are more then this, I just have to find their locations.)

Red Nuts
- In the Forest Entrance, next to the pole in the south west corner.

Yellow Nuts
- In the Forest Entrance, next to the pole in the north west corner.
- Receive 3 from the King of Oven Kingdom as a reward.
- Walk down to the dead end on your way to Fairy Town. Look on the
 ground.
- Win the battle against Tadao after you finish the game.

Green Nuts
- In the Forest Entrance, next to the pole in the north east corner.
- When walking to Nushikiri, go down the dead end and find it on the
 ground.
- After helping the weasels on your way to Koko Natsu, go down to talk
to the lone weasel. Find the nut next to him.

Brown Nuts
- Behind the King's throne in the Oven Kingdom.

<*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><  <*{{{><  <'{{{><  <*{{{><  <"{{{><

1.0 - Added most of the information about River King Advance. Worked on
the FAQ for 8 months off and on. Why didn't I submit the FAQ back
in June 2002? Because I dislike FAQs that are just a table of
contents and a lot of "coming soon!" sections. When the game is
released in English, I'll come back and add a more detailed
walkthrough and correct the fish names.
