1.0  Introduction

Welcome to my Character and Monster Stats Guide for the Game Boy Advance
version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  It's amazing how little
this game has in common with the console versions (PlayStation 2, GameCube,
and XBOX) - and that's a very good thing.  In my humble opinion, all Harry
Potter games should be role-playing games, not action/platformers (however,
that little fact does not keep a die-hard Harry Potter fan like me from
playing and enjoying them anyway, due to all the Harry Potter references).  At
any rate, here you will find all you ever wanted to know (and more) about the
different characters, monsters, and bosses, as well as their strengths and
weaknesses.  Enjoy!

1st Note:  I have discovered a recursive formula for the Experience Needed for
every experience level in the following tables.  It is:

          E(n) = E(n-1) + 13*(n-1)
          E(1) = 0

          where
          n    = Level number
          E(n) = Experience Needed at Level n

          For example, at Level 10, n = 10.  Therefore, E(10) = E(9) + 13*9.
          E(9) = 468, so E(10) = 468 + 117 = 585.

2nd Note:  After some thought, I have come up with the following series:

          Sigma(n) = 13*(n-1) = 13n - 13

Sigma(n) is the summation notation for experience needed at a
certain level.  To find out what it is at say, Level 50, employ the
          following finite sum:

          E(n) = (n/2)*(E(0) + Sigma(n))

where E(n) is defined as in Note 1.  For instance, at Level 50,
          n = 50 and Sigma(n) = 637.  Therefore, E(50) = (50/2)*(0 + 637) =
          25 * 637 = 15,925 experience.  It checks out (and I end up feeling
          very good about myself)!

This serves as the empirical formula for experience, based solely
on the Level Number (much more useful than the recursive formula
displayed in the 1st Note).  If you have any additional input
regarding these formula (or questions), you can write to me at
[email protected] and I will answer your questions or post your
input here as well as give you credit.  Thanks!

3rd Note:  All three of the characters have the same base stats for Defense
and Magic Defense.  They all start at 0, and these stats DO NOT
increase as you gain levels.  That is why they are not found in the
following tables.  You can only increase Defense and Magic Defense
          by equipping equipment.

2.1.1  Description

Harry Potter is the most well-rounded of the three characters you command in
this game.  The spells he can use in the field are Flipendo, Lumos, and
Diffindo. In battle, he can use Flipendo, Verdimillious, Incendio, Petrificus
Totalus, Diffindo, and Wingardium Leviosa.  Below are his stat rankings as
compared to the other two characters.

2.2  Ron Weasley

2.2.1  Description

Ron Weasley is the strongest (in terms of Max SP and Defense capabilities) of
the three characters you command in this game.  However, he is also the
slowest and has the worst spell power (his attacks do less damage than the
others even if they're on the same experience level).  The spells he can use
in the field are Flipendo, Alohomora, and Spongify. In battle, he can use
Flipendo, Verdimillious, Incendio, Petrificus Totalus, Spongify, and
Wingardium Leviosa.  Below are his stat rankings as compared to the other two
characters.

Max SP:       1st
Max MP:       Tied for 2nd
Agility:      3rd
Spell Power:  3rd

2.2.2  Ron Weasley's Stats

Note:  Because of the unavoidable experience gained by Harry in the Leaky
Cauldron, it is impossible to start Ron out at Level 1.  Level 2 is the
lowest level he can start with.  The unavoidable experience Harry gains
      is:
      1) Defeating "The Monster Book of Monsters" in the bedroom (8 exp)
      2) Using Lumos to cross the dark chasm in the cellar (5 exp)
      3) Using Flipendo to break the two barrels in the cellar (5 exp)
      4) Using Flipendo to move the pedestal into place in the cellar (5 exp)
      5) Defeating the Giant Rat (15 exp)

2.3  Hermione Granger

2.3.1  Description

Hermione Granger is the best character, in my opinion.  She is the best
spellcaster of the three characters you command in this game (her attacks do
more damage than the others even if they're on the same experience level, not
to mention that she simply has more spells to cast in battle than the other
two characters).  She is also the fastest player and usually gets the first
turn when you start a battle.  However, she has lower Max SP than Ron.  The
spells she can use in the field are Flipendo, Reparo, and Glacius. In battle,
she can use Flipendo, Verdimillious, Incendio, Fumos, Petrificus Totalus,
Glacius, and Wingardium Leviosa.  Below are her stat rankings as compared to
the other two characters.

Max SP:       Tied for 2nd
Max MP:       1st
Agility:      1st
Spell Power:  1st

2.3.2  Hermione Granger's Stats

Note:  Because of the unavoidable experience gained by Harry in the Leaky
Cauldron, it is impossible to start Hermione out at Level 1.  Level 2
is the lowest level she can start with.  The unavoidable experience
      Harry gains is:
      1) Fighting "The Monster Book of Monsters" (8 exp)
      2) Using Lumos to cross the dark chasm in the cellar (5 exp)
      3) Using Flipendo to break the two barrels in the cellar (5 exp)
      4) Using Flipendo to put the pedestal in place in the cellar (5 exp)
      5) Defeating the Giant Rat (15 exp)

4.0  Non-Folio Monster Stats (includes bosses)

Note:  This list will be in the order that the various bosses appear in the
game.  Loosely speaking, a "boss" is an enemy that you fight in battle that
does NOT have an entry in the Folio Bruti.  I believe that ALL bosses do not
have their SP displayed on screen in the game (the are covered with question
marks "???").  The information listed here is presented in a similar style to
the Folio Bruti Monsters, Section 3.0.

Some abbreviations for spells are also found in this section.  They are:

F  = Flipendo
V  = Verdimillious
I  = Incendio
PT = Petrificus Totalus
WL = Wingardium Leviosa
S  = Spongify
D  = Diffindo
G  = Glacius

4.1.1  'The Monster Book of Monsters' (1st Encounter)

Max SP:  25
Weak against:  I,PT,G,D
Strong against:  WL

Location:  First enemy you fight.  In Harry's room at the Leaky Cauldron.

4.1.2  Giant Rat

Max SP:  45
Weak against:  V,PT
Strong against:  WL,D

Location:  Cellar of the Leaky Cauldron, guarding the Rat Tonic.

4.1.3  Snake

Max SP:  55
Weak against:  F,V,I,PT,WL,S,G
Strong against:  None

Location:  Baggage car on the Hogwarts Express, after the incident involving
the Dementors.  In battle, this monster is exactly the same as the
Snake in the Folio Bruti section.  This boss only shows up if you
pick Ron instead of Hermione after Harry passes out.

4.1.4  Brown Recluse Spider

Max SP:  23
Weak against:  F,I,PT,WL,G
Strong against:  None

Location:  Passenger car on the Hogwarts Express, after the incident involving
the Dementors.  In battle, this monster is exactly the same as the
Brown Recluse Spider in the Folio Bruti section.  This boss only
shows up if you pick Hermione instead of Ron after Harry passes
          out.

4.1.5  Crabbe and Goyle

Crabbe Max SP:  90
Crabbe weak against:  V,PT,WL,G
Crabbe strong against:  D

Goyle Max SP:  90
Goyle weak against:  F,PT,WL,G
Goyle strong against:  D

Location:  On your first day at Hogwarts, when you are in the Transfiguration
class challenge (you only have Harry and Hermione here).  Note that
Crabbe and Goyle appear together in battle.

4.1.6  'The Monster Book of Monsters' (2nd through 6th Encounters)

Max SP:  180
Weak against:  I,PT,D
Strong against:  None

Location:  In Hagrid's Garden Maze, when your task is to find five stray
copies of 'The Monster Book of Monsters'.  Therefore, you will
encounter this boss five times.  It has the same stats each time.
The best spell to use on it is Diffindo (makes sense, right?).

4.1.7  Venemous Tentacula

Max SP:  290
Weak against:  I,PT,D,G
Strong against:  WL

Location:  At the end of Hagrid's Garden Maze, after you have found all five
copies of 'The Monster Book of Monsters'.  It is found almost
          immediately after the fifth copy.

4.1.8  River Troll

Max SP:  375
Weak against:  V,I,PT,G
Strong against:  WL,D

Location:  At the end of the Potions Store Room Maze, no matter which party
          you use.

4.1.9  'The Monster Book of Monsters' (7th Encounter)

Max SP:  575
Weak against:  V,I,PT,D,G
Strong against:  None

Location:  In the library, during your search for the five missing book pages.

4.1.10  Whomping Willow

Max SP:  650
Weak against:  I,PT,G,D
Strong against:  WL

Location:  Hogwarts Grounds, after the big black dog kidnaps Ron and takes him
into/under the Whomping Willow.  Walk up to the Whomping Willow to
          begin this encounter.

4.1.11  Forest Troll

Max SP:  800
Weak against:  I,PT,WL
Strong against:  D,G

Location:  Shrieking Shack Path 1, on the way back to Hogwarts after you find
          Sirius Black.

4.1.12  Lupin (werewolf form)

Max SP:  600
Weak against:  PT, Buckbeak's attacks
Strong against:  F,V,I,WL,D,G

Location:  When returning to Hogwarts after the Shrieking Shack portion of the
game, Lupin turns into a werewolf . . . and you must fight him!

Note:  Your main job in this battle is to keep Buckbeak alive!  All of your
spells will only do 1 damage to Lupin (2 damage if you get a critical hit),
so you should use Harry's turns to heal Buckbeak and Hermione's turns to cast
Fumos on the party members so that Lupin can't hit you as easily.  Also, you
can use Petrificus Totalus on Lupin to put him out of commission for a round
or two.  After Hermione finishes casting Fumos, you should use her [in
addition to Harry] to heal the party as well, and especially Buckbeak!  Not a
tough battle if you know that Buckbeak is the only one that can seriously hurt
Lupin.  It can be challenging if you figure this out the hard way.

4.1.13  Malfoy (Final Boss)

Max SP:  975
Weak against:  I,PT,WL,G
Strong against:  D

Location:  Rooftop, after Harry and Hermione have used the Time-Turner to
          rescue Sirius Black.

Note:  Malfoy is actually tough (and way too strong for a Hogwarts student,
but whatever).  The best spells to use on him are Wingardium Leviosa and
Glacius.  These cause the most damage per spell.  Heal if you need to (unless
you are at Experience Level 99, you will most likely need to do some healing
in this battle).  I suggest that you start off this battle with full SP and MP
on both characters (you do NOT have Ron for this battle; he's in the hospital
wing).
