Section 1 - Introduction and Overview

Boukyaku no Senritsu, or as it's better known in English speaking countries,
The Melody of Oblivion is a game based off of the GAINAX anime series of the
same name. The Anime is a story of a world ruled over in secret by Monsters.
Some time back, the Monsters and the people fought for control over the world,
and the people lost. Now, the Monsters live in the shadows, coming out only
when they have come to feed on the child sacrifices the adults give to the
Monsters in order to protect themselves.

Some still fight the Monsters. Freedom Fighters known as the Melos no Senshi
risk their lives day in and out in order to rid the planet of the Monster
Menace. Our main characters belong to this group of people.

Not all people want the Monsters to be deseated from power. Some, who have
gained high seats of power due to the Monster Reign, fight for the monsters
as a part of the group known as the Monster Union. Monster Union Agents
constitute the majority of Boss Battles in the game.

Section 3 - Character Chart

Before beginning the game, you will need to select between characters. The
characters most noticable difference will be the various arrow shooting
patterns the characters have. Characters have no bearing on which levels you
play or which bosses you fight, but they do affect the cut-scenes and animated
sequences.

Bocca -

Shot pattern: Three Arrows, one straight, and two diagonal in the direction
Bocca is facing.
Power Shot: Five Arrows, one straigh, and four diagonal in all directions.
Strength: Mid

*******************************************************************************
Attacks in Boukyaku no Senritsu are either by use of simple melee attacks or
through a bow and arrow. The Bow And Arrow has three different attacks:
*******************************************************************************

Standard Shot - Your character's basic shot. This can range in power and number
of arrows shot.

Power Shot - A stronger version of the Standard Shot. This shot ranges in power
and number of arrows shot, and is in all cases more capable than the Standard
Shot.

Melos Shot - The strongest shot in the Game. Number of shots is dependant on
the blue Melos Bar on the left side of the screen. The Melos Shot does
massive damage to all enemies on the screen. An anime sequence accompanies
each character's Melos Shot.

*******************************************************************************
The In-Game HUD consists of two colored bars on the left portion of the screen
and a numbered section.
*******************************************************************************

Health Bar (Red) - Signifies your character's current health.

Melos Bar (Blue) - Signifies your character's collected Melos.

Melos Number - The number below the Melos Bar signifies the number of Melos
Shots accumulated. When the Melos Bar fills completely, a new Melos number is
gained and the Melos Bar becomes empty. The letter F signifies that the Melos
Bar is full, and no further Melos can be accumulated until it has been emptied.
The maximum number of Melos Shots varies from character to character. Melos
Numbers and Bars do not carry over from one Stage to another.

*******************************************************************************
There are three kinds of items collectible in Boukyaku no Senritsu.
*******************************************************************************

Red Shields - Restore Health.

Blue Shields - Add Melos to the Melos Bar.

Silver Shields - Grants temporary immunity to enemy attacks.

Section 5 - Walkthrough

Select between any of the three-four selectable characters. The game will then
advance to the level select screen. The first time you play the game, only
the first level will be available to choose.

**************
STAGE 1 - TOWN
**************

Stage 1 - Area 1

This first area is mostly comprised of basic enemies geared towards allowing
the gamer to become used to the game. These are comprised of

Enemies in Area:

Yellow Cows - These pig like creatures can only attack at close
range, and rely more on numbers than they do power or technique. Low Health.
When fighting yellow cows, simply try not to be surrounded. A Power Shot should
be enough to kill any one to two yellow cows, but if you do happen to get
surrounded, don't be afraid to use your Melos Shot.

Red Cows - These cows have more health than the yellow cows, and have the
ability to shoot their heads off as projectiles at the player. They are very
slow though, and take several moments to aim and shoot, giving the player
more than enough time to take them out. Red Cows aren't difficult to deal with
when alone, but become more burdensome when dealing with yellow cows. If you
get behind a Red Cow, you won't have any problems out of it.

Bull Skull - A Bull Skull without a body, this creature has more health
and attack power than any cow. When fighting it, stay out of it's path while
it charges, then attack it from behind while it turns around. This enemy
typically appears alone or when almost all of the Cows have been defeated,
which ensures a one on one battle. Simple dodging is all that it takes to
handilly defeat this enemy.

Stage 1 - Area 2

This area is more or less an encore of the previous stage. Use the same tactics
as before, and you will have very little difficulty here.

Enemies in Area:

Yellow Cows
Red Cows
Bull Skull

Stage 1 - Area 3

Enemies in Area:

Blue Cows - Blue Cows are as strong as Red Cows, and have all of the same
abilities. Blue Cows are also slightly faster than Red Cows. Typically, use
the same basic technique on Blue Cows that you would on Red Cows.

In this area however, a river seperates Blue Cows from you. Shoot your arrows
at the cows as they line up along the river and dodge the heads they shoot
at you. To defeat the cows quicker, shoot them with a power shot.

Stage 1 - Area 4

Enemies in Area:

Yellow Cows
Red Cows
Blue Cows
Bull Skulls

Another extension of areas 1 and 2. Defeat the yellow cows first to give
yourself more room to evade the firing heads of the red and blue cows. When
all of the Cows have been defeated, attack the Bull Skull. At this point, it
shouldn't give you much trouble.

Stage 1 - Area 5

In this next area, you will be racing on your Aiba Machine down a road.
Flashing arrows on the top and bottom of the screen indicate where enemies
will appear from. Drive the Aiba machine away from the area the arrow points
at to keep from being hit.

Enemies in Area:

Mini-Bull Bus - These are the most prolific enemies in Area 5. They will run
in a straight forward direction without changing course, and are fairly easy
to dodge.

Rampaging Bull Bus - A few of these lace Area 5. They steer themselves towards
you, and in some cases can be difficult to dodge.

Stage 1 - Area 6

                  * * BOSS BATTLE - BULL BUS * *

This version of the Bull Bus is a lot stronger than the one in the
previous level. When it first appears in front of you, it will shoot two
small missles at you and then stand still for a moment, readying itself
to charge. If the bus is looking down at you from the top portion of the
screen, all you have to do to evade the missles is stand still. If the
bus is on either side of the screen, evade the missles by either moving
up or down out of their way. Afterwards, move to the side of the bus and
shoot arrows into it. The bus will charge forward after a few seconds,
but if you moved to it's side, it will not be able to reach you. After
enough arrows have been shot into the Bull Bus, it will glow bright red.
At this point, the bus will no longer stop and stand motionless. Stand
on the bottom portion of the screen and wait. When the ground begins to
shake, move quickly to the top portion of the screen. The Bull Bus will
charge along the bottom of the screen. Use this oppurtunity to use any
Melos Attacks and arrows on the Bull Bus.

STAGE 2: THE WHITE CAPE
***********************

Stage 2 - Area 1

Enemies in Area:

Chickens - These chicken creatures are slow and not particularly bright -
they don't even seem to follow your character around the map. Simply stay a
short distance from them and shoot them with arrows, usually two or three will
suffice.

Babies - While giant walking babies might seem like a frightening idea,
these babies aren't much to worry about. Their offensive capabilities are lax,
but their defensive capabilities make it difficult them difficult to take on
in large quantities. Try to stay as far away as possible and shoot the babies
with power shots to quickly eliminate them

Sewer Cannon - A turret hiding beneath a sewer lid. It fires small bullets
at your character at regular intervals. It can be destroyed with a few shots of
the arrow, and often yields a Red Shield.

Stage 2 - Area 2

In this area, the objective is to destroy the gates. Your progress will be
slowed somewhat by the monsters, but it's best to ignore them as much as
possible. They will continue to appear indefinitely until the gates have been
destroyed.

Enemies in Area:

Snake - Medium speed and low attack power. Snakes are best attacked
with a simple melee strike.

Egg  - Fast with low attack power. Eggs will explode upon running
into the player. Avoid them, and attack with either arrows or melee attacks.

Stage 2 - Area 3

Don't worry about the Sewer Cannon or the eggs too much here, concentrate your
attacks on the babies. When all of the babies have been destroyed, the eggs
will vanish.

Enemies in Area:

Egg
Baby
Sewer Cannons

Stage 2 - Area 4

Focus on the Snakes and the one baby in this area. Kill eggs when in need of a
health boost.

Enemies in Area:

Egg
Snake
Sewer Cannon
Baby

Stage 2 - Area 5

In this next area, you will be racing on your Aiba Machine down a road again.
Flashing arrows on the top and bottom of the screen indicate where enemies
will appear from. Drive the Aiba machine away from the area the arrow points
at to keep from being hit.

Enemies in Area:

Divebomb Egg - These eggs come from the top of the screen, swoop to the bottom,
then return to the top of the screen and disappear.

Flying Egg - These eggs appear from the bottom of the screen and head
diagonally towards the top.

Stage 2 - Area 6
_____________________________________________________________________________

     * * BOSS BATTLE - MONSTER UNION AGENT MIDNIGHT FLEDGLING * *

Midnight Fledgling attacks the gamer in a giant Chicken Mecha. It will
flap around at the top of the screen for a moment before attacking. Use
this oppurtunity to shoot it with power shots or regular arrows. The
Chicken Mecha has two primary means of attack. The first, which it will
use right away, is to fire five needle size quills from it's wing. These
quills can come from either wing, but come at a slow rate of speed. Any
of the characters can easilly dodge these by stepping to the side. The
second of the Chicken Mecha's attack is a firestream shot from the beak.
The chicken will come closer to the player and a fire will light on it's
head. Use this oppurtunity to run to the corner of the screen. If at all
possible, use diagonal arrows to damage the Chicken Mecha as it shoots
it's fireball. If your character does not have any diagonal shots, simply
stand still and wait for the Chicken Mecha to stop. After enough arrows
have been shot into the Chicken Mecha, it will glow bright red and it's
rate of attack will speed up. Use this time to use your Melos Shots on
the Chicken Mecha. Finish off what's left of the Chicken Mecha's health
by repeating the same strategy as before.

*************************
STAGE 3: THE DAM OF TEARS
*************************

Stage 3 - Area 1

Enemies in the Area:

Mech-Rats - They come in large groups and move all over the screen. Luckilly,
they also have little offensive power. They explode upon running into the
character, so attempt to destroy them with your arrows.

Jumbo Mech-Rats - Much larger than typical Mech-Rats. Jumbo Mech-Rats will
attempt to collide into your character, sending your character flying
backwards. Keep away from the Jumbo Mech-Rat, and attack it exclusively with
arrows.

Purple Rats - These rats move at a constant rate in a constant direction. When
they reach the bottom of the area, they reappear at the top and continue on.
Attack them normally.

Stage 3 - Area 2

Enemies in the Area:

Mech-Rats
Jumbo Mech-Rats
Purple Rats

A continuation of the last level. Keep an eye out for Jumbo Rats while sweeping
out the smaller foes.

Stage 3 - Area 4

Enemies in the Area:

Red Rats - These Rats will move up or down the screen until they appear next
to your character, at which point they will turn towards your character and
attempt to run headlong into him. Shoot them before they have a chance.

Mech-Rats
Jumbo Mech-Rats
Purple Rats

Stage 3 - Area 5

Enemies in the Area:

Mech-Rats
Jumbo Mech-Rats
Red Rats

Stage 3 - Area 6

In this area, the objective is to destroy the red targets in the four corners
of the room from the thin bridge. It's recommended that you use your power
shot to attack the buttons in order to destroy them quicker. Don't waste time
and health by attacking the Mech-Rats in this level, as they will continue to
appear until you destroy the targets. To make things somewhat easier, you can
try to kill Mech-Rats until one drops a Silver Shield. Use the invulnerabliity
granted to attack the buttons without worry of the Mech-Rats running into you.

Stage 3 - Area 7

In this next area, you will be racing on your Aiba Machine down a road again.
Flashing arrows on the bottom of the screen indicate where enemies will
appear from. Drive the Aiba machine away from the area the arrow points at
to keep from being hit.

Enemies in Area:

Mech-Rats - The only enemy in this area is the Mech-Rats. They will come from
behind you and move towards the top of the screen. Mech-Rats do little damage.

Stage 3 - Area 8
_____________________________________________________________________________

     * * BOSS BATTLE - MONSTER UNION AGENT MILLIONAIRE BEAVER * *

Millionaire Beaver attacks your character in a Massive Rat Mecha. It will
bounce around momentarilly before jumping high into the air, out of frame.
At this point it will call out for assistance from regular Rat-Mechs,
which will flood from the top of the screen downward. Most times, the
Rat-Mech's appearing from the top of the screen won't even need to be
dodged. If any do happen to appear in front of you, a single arrow will
be more than enough to handle it. When the Massive Rat Mecha falls back
to the ground, shoot it with several arrows before it returns to the air.
Eventually, The Massive Rat Mecha will attempt to attack your character
with one of it's claws. Step aside of the claw, and continue to attack
it. Soon, the Massive Rat Mecha will glow bright red. At this point, it
will attack with both of it's claws at once, although because they aim at
exactly the same spot, evading the claws is no more difficult. Shoot the
Massive Rat Mecha a few more times and it will go down.

STAGE 4: THE FACTORY
********************

Stage 4 - Area 1

Enemies in the Area:

Monkey-Man (Green) - Monkey-Men are the strongest regular enemy in
the game. With good speed, strength, and defense, they make difficult
opponents. Try and keep away from them as much as possible, and shoot them
with power shots to both knock them over and deal sufficent damage.

Monkey-Man (Yellow) - All of the same characteristics of the Monkey-Man (green)
except for a stylish yellow diaper and the ability to use a charge attack.
Stay out of their way, and try to attack them only from the side they aren't
facing or with a diagonal shot.

Monkey-Wrench - Flying Wrenchs. Decent health and good speed. These wrenchs
can be very bothersome when attention is focued on the problematic Monkey-Men.
A few normal shots of the arrow is sufficient to destroy the Monkey-Wrench.

Super-Turret - These turrets are just like the turrets from prior levels,
except that they fire four shots off at once. They typically give out a Red
Shield upon being defeated.

Stage 4 - Area 2

In this area, the objective is to destroy the two red targets at the top of the
area. This is made very difficult because of the Monkey-Men and the
Motor-Turret however, so try to lure them to the bottom of the screen,
returning to the top of the screen, attacking the targets, and when the
enemies return repeat the steps.

Enemies in the Area:

Motor-Turret - Turrets on little train tracks. They will follow you up and
down the level, firing on you. Although they can be destroyed, they will
promptly be replaced by another turret, so it is in your best interest not to
deal with them much.

Monkey-Man (green)

Stage 4 - Area 3

In this area, the walls of around the area will slowly come crushing together.
Meanwhile, Monkey-men (yellow) will charge through the rapidly decreasing
path. Kill the Monkey-men before the walls close all the way, crushing you.

Enemies in the Area:

Monkey-Man (Yellow)

Stage 4 - Area 4

In this area, the character will need to attack the gate to move on to the
next area. Kill the two Monkey-Men, then focus your energy on the gate as much
as possible, ignoring the Monkey-Wrenches. Don't venture to the sides of the
gate, or you will be shot by turrets.Use any Silver Shields you find to your
advantage, and attack only the gate while you remain invulnerable.

Enemies in the Area:

Monkey-Man (green)
Monkey-Wrench

Stage 4 - Area 5

In this area, the character will need to attack the gate to move on to the
next area. Unlike the last level, this level is filled with Monkey-Men, making
the task of destroying the gate much more difficult. Try to stay on the bottom
of the screen firing power shots at the gate. This will make it easier to
attack oncoming Monkey-Men at the same time, not allowing them to attack you
first. Use any Silver Shields you find to your advantage, and attack only the
gate while you remain invulnerable.

Enemies in the Area:

Monkey-Man (green)
Monkey-Wrench

Stage 4 - Area 6

In this next area, you will be racing on your Aiba Machine down a road again.
A truck at the top of the screen will race in front of you, and will shoot
Monkey-wrenches and mini-Monkey-Men at you. One method of keeping out of harm's
way is to wait at the bottom right portion of the screen for the moment that
the truck unleashes the mini-Monkey-Men at you, and then moving to the left-
most portion of the screen. If executed correctly, the majority of the
mini-Monkey-Men will be on the opposite side of the screen, unable to reach
you.

Enemies in the Area:

Mini-Monkey-Men - Bounce surprisingly slowly down the road towards you.

Monkey-Wrenches - Come in quantities of three. Faster than the mini-Monkey-Men
and difficult to avoid.

Stage 4 - Area 7

Hustle Monkey pilots a Ape Mecha that stands out of reach from your
character. It will hop around for some time before attacking. Use this
time to shoot it with as many arrows as possible. Soon Hustle Monkey will
choose between two attacks. The first is performed when Hustle Monkey
raises both hands then claps them together. A large Monkey Wrench will
appear from the top of the screen and quickly hit the ground. Most times
the Wrench will appear above you, but occaisonally it will appear at a
random spot on the field of play. Simply watch the top of the screen when
Hustle Monkey begins the move, and evade as needed. The second attack is
performed when Hustle Monkey pulls back both of his fists. Six missles
shoot from him and head slowly towards the character. These can easilly
be either destroyed with arrow or evaded. After enough damage has been
dealt on Hustle Monkey, he will begin to glow red. His missles now become
much quicker and harder to evade. Use this time to use your Melos Attacks
on Hustle Monkey to finish him off quickly.

STAGE 5: SPACE STATION

Stage 5 - Area 1

In this next area, you will be racing on your Aiba Machine down a road again.
Flashing arrows on the top of the screen indicate where enemies will appear
from. Be sure to follow the arrows closely and pick up as many shields as
possible. There are only two Areas in this stage and any health lost will
affect the final level immensely. There are no Blue Shields in the next level
either, so pick up as much as possible here.

Enemies in the Area:

Red Missles - This level is flooded with Red missles. They do little damage by
themselves, but because of their massive numbers the damage adds up quickly.
Do anything possible not to get hit by many.

Blue Missles - These missles appear at the top of the screen and aim at your
character before firing. Because they can only shoot in a diagonal line or
straight forward, they aren't very hard to evade, but the task becomes more
difficult in bulk.

Crane Claw - This metallic arm that resembles a Crane game claw fire small
green blobs at you in quantities of three. After each blob barrage is fired,
evade by moving slightly to the left or right. After a few shots, the arm will
pull away, and the Area will end.

Stage 5 - Area 2

The level begins with your character in a small room with four divits in
the ground in front of you and a large silver ball at the top of the
room. At this point, the objective of the level is to destroy the four
targets hidden below the ground. Each will pop up out of the ground for a
short time, then go back underground. Use these instances to deal damage
with either melee or arrow attacks. While you are attacking the targets,
there are three different weapons working against you. The first is an
extending bar armed with three laser turrets. While this is attacking,
move to the bottom of the screen. You will be safe from the lasers there
and open to attack the targets. The second weapon is a barrage of six
homing missles. These aren't difficult to dodge, simply move to the
bottem of the screen and move back to the top when the missles draw in
close enough. The third weapon is the Crane Claw, returning from the
previous Area. Although not especially hard to avoid, the blobs fired
from the Crane Claw are rapid and require full attention. Don't worry
about the targets and focus on the blobs while the Crane Claw is out.
When the Crane Claw is pulled back, go back to attacking the targets as
usual. Soon the fourth will be destroyed.

The Silver Ball on the top of the screen change to a bright red. Move to
the back of the room quickly to better evade the coming attack. Out of
the ball will shoot hundreds of green blobs in random directions. Most
blobs will be fired in your characters direction. Evasion is top priority
here. Use dull spots in the Balls firing patterns to deal damage to the
ball, but keep a watch out for renewed volleys. When your character is in
a difficult spot to evade further blobs, use the Melos Shot to clear the
screen of all blobs and deal damage to the Ball. After enough shots, the
Ball will finally succumb to your arrows.

With the Ball now defeated, the game comes to an end. Sit back and watch the
final cut-scene.
