0 Introduction -
---------------- -
Azumanga daioh advance is a game which takes almost no Japanese knowledge to
play, once you understand it. Other than the gratuitous fanservice photos,
essentially the main concept of the game is this: You saddle up with your
favorite character, and play cards against other characters from the show.
Winning gets you more cards.
The object is to win with your favorite characters to open up all the extras,
and collect all the cards in the game. I find it pretty fun, personally, if a
little too easy to win against the computer with a bit of effort.
Let's get to the good stuff!
- ------------------------ Section 1: How to Play ----------------------- -
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
1.1 - Instructions
\_____________________________________/
------------ -
1.1.a Rules -
------------ -
a) Every card in the game has between one and six stars on it. There are six
potential locations for stars to go, and they are arranged like the six-spot
on a dice, like so:
| |
| [1] [2] | [*] [ ]
| |
| [3] [4] | So, one card could look like this: [*] [ ]
| |
| [5] [6] | [ ] [*]
| |
b) Each player starts with 100 health points.
c) You build a deck of 25 cards, which are then shuffled and dealt to you in
groups of 5. You are given roughly 20 seconds to organize them into what we'll
call a "stack". A stack could look like this:
__________ __________ __________ __________ __________
| Osaka | | Tomo | | Osaka | | Chiyo | | Nyamo |
| [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [*] | | [*] [ ] |
| | | | | | | | | |
| [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [*] | | [*] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [*] [*] |
| | | | | | | | | |
| [ ] [*] | | [*] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [ ] |
| | | | | C | | D | | E |
Note that the 5 cards will be right beside each other onscreen, but I
have seperated them for clarity. Each card features a scene or portrait from
the animated series, and they are classified by which character appears on
them.
d) Your "stack" recieves points based on 3 categories, which are examined
more closely in Section 1.1.b, "Scoring stacks". The 3 category scores are
added up to form the HIT score.
e) The HIT score your stack is worth is deducted from the opponent's
health total at the end of the round. Then, a new round starts.
f) The first player to reach 0 health loses. If both players reach 0 in the
same round, a "sudden death round" is played, where the player whose stack
scores higher HIT is declared the winner. This is a little misleading, since
there is also a game mode called "sudden death", so for clarity, I will refer
to this "sudden death round" as a "tiebreaker."
--------------------- -
1.1.b Scoring stacks -
--------------------- -
The method of calculating a stack score is best explained through an example.
Let's go through the process step by step with the stack pictured below:
| | | | | | | | | |
| [*] [ ] | | [ ] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [*] [*] | | [*] [*] |
| | | | | | | | | |
| [ ] [*] | | [ ] [*] | | [*] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [*] [ ] |
| | | | | | | | | |
| [ ] [ ] | | [*] [*] | | [ ] [*] | | [ ] [ ] | | [ ] [*] |
| A | | B | | C | | D | | E |
This stack would score as follows:
+++ Stars: Total number of stars on all cards.
For our example, this is 15.
+++ Links: Any number of stars in a diagonal or horizontal row of 3 or more
is a "link". However, a vertical column of 3 is not a link.
A link can, and in fact MUST, extend from one card onto another.
A diagonal link will always use two stars from one card, and one
star from a second card. A horizontal link can use up to 10 stars,
if it extends across one whole row of the entire stack. These
links are worth points equal to the number of stars which take part
in them. Stars are counted twice for taking part in more than one
link. It is crucial to note that a horizontal row of 4 does NOT
count as two 3-star links, it counts as a single 4-star link.
In our example, the links are:
A1-A4-B5, B2-C3-C6, B4-C3-C4. D1-D2-E1-E2, D2-E3-E6
(Note that B2-B4-B6 does not count as a link since it is vertical.)
(Note that D1-D2-E1 is NOT a scored as seperate from D2-E1-E2.)
This adds up to 16.
+++ Fast groups: When a link extends from one card onto its neighbor, they are
said to be "grouped". You will notice, the game seperates your stack
into groups. Fast groups are scored individually, according to how
many cards OTHER than the originating card are included in them.
This is a little confusing, so here's a chart:
If all 5 cards are linked you get the maximum score of 4.
A group of 4, and one useless card scores 3.
A group of 2, and a group of 3 scores 3.
Two groups of 2, and one useless card scores 2.
A group of 3, and 2 useless cards scores 2.
A group of 2, and 3 useless cards scores 1.
Notice that there is no 3-star link extending between cards C and D.
Thus, A-B-C is one fast group, and D-E is a second fast group.
A quicker way to calculate the Fast group score, is:
5 - number of groups.
On this scale, our example scores 3 for Fast groups.
(ABC scores 2, and DE scores 1.)
+++ HIT score: Adding the three scores (Stars, Links, Fast groups) together
makes the HIT score. In this case, 33. Not a bad hit, but not the
best one that could have been gotten with the cards.
To recap quickly:
HIT = (Total # of stars) + (# of stars that are in links) + (5-# of groups)
Your opponent's stack is, of course, scored on the same scale as your own,
but the numbers will not count up visually the same way as yours do.
----------------- -
1.1.c Strategy -
----------------- -
a) Any time you get dealt a card with one empty column like this:
| |
| [*] [ ] |
| |
| [*] [ ] |
| |
| [*] [ ] |
| |
you immediately should place that card on the right or left side of the
stack, depending on which side the column is on. The object is to have the
blank column against the edge, which is where that card will always be most
efficient.
b) Though it may seem tempting to always try for a 5-card fast group, it is
rarely the best score you can get with the cards given.
c) It's always better to use a star to make a new link with unused stars,
rather than to use it to extend an existing link. You recieve only one point
for extending, but you get three points for making an entirely new link.
d) The key point to recognize about scoring high is that a single star can be
counted more than once for link points. Learn to recognize patterns such as:
| | | |
| [1] [2] | | [*] [*] |
| | | |
| [3] [4] | | [*] [ ] |
| | | |
| [5] [6] | | [ ] [*] |
| A | | B |
Where you know that to get the most score out of this arrangement of stars,
there must be stars present at A2 and A6, but that if you have to make a
choice, A2 is more important.
This is the key to scoring powerful hits.
- --------------------- Section 2: Menu Translations -------------------- -
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.1 - Main Menu
\_____________________________________/
---------------------------- -
2.1.a SUTORII (story mode) -
---------------------------- -
Story mode is the main game, played as if it were a street-fighter game.
You take on opponents with short interludes of text and minor storyline,
and eventually challenge "bosses" (the teachers.). Sounds, and certain
cards can only be obtained in story mode.
-------------------------------- -
2.1.b SADENDESU (sudden death) -
-------------------------------- -
Survival mode. You keep playing 32 opponents until you lose, or beat them all.
If you DO lose, you will be ejected to the main menu, where you will have to
start again.There is no story involved, although the background may change
every 8 rounds.
---------------------- -
2.1.c OMAKE (extras) -
---------------------- -
+++ Album. A photo album with pictures of all the cards you've started with,
won, earned or otherwise obtained.
Each sub-category contains 8 cards. The captions are them are simply
"Tomo photo 1", "Tomo photo 2", etc. The final three photos are the "Rare"
six-star cards.
-> Tomo (Cards featuring Takino Tomo)
-> Osaka (Cards featuring Kasuga Ayumu)
-> Kagura (Cards featuring Kagura-san)
-> Yomi (Cards featuring Mizuhara Koyomi)
-> Sakaki (Cards featuring Sakaki-san)
-> Chiyo (Cards featuring Mihama Chiyo)
-> Yukari (Cards feature Tanizaki Yukari)
-> Nyamo (Cards featuring Kurosawa Minamo)
+++ Sound. A gallery of earned sound bytes you can replay of the characters.
Character sounds are unlocked by beating the game with that character.
+++ Graphic. "Situation Graphics".
These are unlocked through story mode wins, and generally feature a
memorable scene from the show, or character ending.
-> Tomo's win pose
-> Osaka's win pose
-> Kagura's win pose
-> Yomi's win pose
-> Sakaki's win pose
-> Chiyo's win pose
-> Yukari's win pose
-> Nyamo's win pose
-> Tomo's scene 1..
-> etc.
There exist three CG pictures for each playable character, plus one
group art.
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.b - Character Select
\__________________________________/
Hopefully if you are interested in this game you will be familiar with
the characters, but the screen looks like this.
[ Chiyo-chan ] [ Tomo ] [ Osaka ]
[ Yukari sensei ] [ Yomi ]
(hidden) [ Sakaki ]
[ Nyamo ] [ Kagura ]
(hidden)
Upon selecting one, you get a pic of the character, and a paperclipped
post-it note saying:
+++ "From the beginning"
+++ "Continue"
The first option will allow you to start with the "Starter deck"
for your selected character.
The second option will allow you to use any previously earned cards as well.
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.3 - Before a match
\_______________________________/
You will proceed to this screen after choosing your character, and after a
match. From here, you can:
------------------ -
2.3.a DECK BUILD -
------------------ -
+++ Edit Deck 1
+++ Edit Deck 2
+++ Edit Deck 3
After choosing a deck to edit:
-> You can move your cursor to a card on the right and press "A" twice
to add it to the deck.
-> You can move your cursor to a card on the left and press "A" twice
to remove it from the deck.
-> You can move your cursor to any card, and press "R" to view its
statistics, including star placement.
"B" exits.
------------------- -
2.3.b SELECT DECK -
------------------- -
Very straightforward. You are given a menu with three options:
+++ Deck 1 ( number of cards / 25)
+++ Deck 2 ( number of cards / 25)
+++ Deck 3 ( number of cards / 25)
"A" chooses the selected deck to be the active one.
"B" exits.
------------------- -
2.3.c CARD VIEWER -
------------------- -
A menu to browse the cards your current character owns. They are organized
as follows:
+++ Tomo
+++ Osaka
+++ Kagura
+++ Yomi
+++ Sakaki
+++ Chiyo
+++ Yukari
+++ Nyamo
+++ All Characters
Upon making a selection from this menu, you are faced with:
-> One star cards
-> Two star cards
-> Three star cards
-> Four star cards
-> Five star cards
-> Six star cards
-> All cards in this category.
From here, you can see the arrangement of stars on the cards in question.
Press "A" twice on a card to bring up the "card discard" function.
"A" again activates it, and the card is lost.
"B" exits.
------------------ -
2.3.d GAME START -
------------------ -
Let the game begin!!
NOTE: Your active deck MUST have 25 cards in it
or you will not be able to play.
----------------- -
2.3.e QUIT GAME -
----------------- -
Return to the menu. Your game in progress is saved.
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.4 - During a match
\_______________________________/
Press "A" to pick up a card. Then, press left or right and press "A" again,
and the two cards will swap positions.
Press "select" to quickly end the round if you are finished organizing.
------------------ -
2.4.a (The Scoreboard) -
------------------ -
+++ Star count: Total # of stars processed by the scorecard this round
+++ Link count: Total # of stars present in 3-in-a-row connections counted
this round.
Stars participating in more than one "link" are counted
once for each link.
+++ Fast group score: Total number of "tagged on" cards present.
This is a little confusing, but here's the rule:
For each linked group of cards, one point is scored
for each ADDITIONAL card beyond the first.
+++ HIT score: gotten by adding the three scores together.
This amount is deducted from the opponent's health.
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.5 - After a victory
\__________________________________/
A number of cards will appear, usually 3, which you have won from the match.
---------------------- -
2.5.a KEEP THIS CARD? -
---------------------- -
The cards appear one at a time, and you can choose what to do with each one.
+++ Keep it.
+++ Throw it away.
(Note, the card will still count as "collected" for the purposes of
filling the album.)
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
2.6 - After a defeat
\__________________________________/
----------------- -
2.6.a TRY AGAIN? -
----------------- -
The screen darkens, and your cursor becomes a cat balloon. Choose from:
+++ Again, Again.. One more time. (returns you to the pre-game screen)
+++ That's enough for today. (returns you to the title screen)
- -------------- Section 3: Game Progression & Unlockables --------------- -
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
3.1 - Opponents List
\____________________________________/
----------------- -
3.1.a Story Mode -
----------------- -
You will be faced with the characters in this order:
Tomo, Osaka, Kagura, Yomi, Sakaki, Chiyo, Yukari.
If you beat every one of those opponents without losing a single match:
Nyamo.
+++ It is more of a challenge to lose to Tomo than it is to win.
I think the GBA finds the worst arrangement possible for the cards she is
dealt. Osaka you will also beat before you even know the rules of the game.
+++ Kagura will be your first real battle. I suggest you try to take her out
before the tiebreaker round, since it seems to be the one round she can
actually score well in. Chiyo also performs her best during tiebreaker
rounds.
+++ Yomi and Yukari will probably have to be beaten in the tiebreaker round,
since they both seem to perform one really good hit every match, meaning
that unless your deck seriously outclasses theirs, you can't beat them to
100 damage.
+++ Sakaki and Nyamo's decks contain a lot of stable cards, rather than being
"gambler" types which can go all-or-nothing like Yomi and Yukari. You
should try to build your deck like Yomi and Yukari's deck for the Nyamo
match. You should also anticipate that their scores will likely be almost
the same for each round, so you can clearly see how many rounds you have
left to win.
------------------- -
3.1.b Sudden Death -
------------------- -
You will fight 32 matches, in the same order as in story mode.
However, you will immediately lose the game if you lose one match.
Nyamo is your 8th, 16th, 24th, and final opponent.
---------------- -
3.1.c Hard Mode -
---------------- -
You will fight the characters in the same order, and the same manner as in
story mode, but now, they have much better cards. In addition, they seem
to be much more intelligent than in the earlier battles.
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
3.2 - Graphical treats
\____________________________________/
---------------- -
3.2.a Launchers -
---------------- -
For lack of a better word, "Launchers" occur when you achieve link points
which pass over a multiple of 10. A score which achieves a high "launcher"
will always also display the lower launchers, too. What happens is essentially,
a small, cute "chibi" version of yourself, or minor character from the show
will fly up into the air past the scoreboard.
+++ At 10 link points, your character will launch.
+++ At 20 link points, Tadakichi. (Tadakichi is Chiyo's dog.)
+++ At 30 link points, Kamineko. (Kamineko is the cat that bites Sakaki.)
+++ At 40 link points, Chiyo-chichi.(The orange cat which Osaka gives to Chiyo)
+++ At 50 link points, Yamamaya. (The brown cat that protects Sakaki.)
+++ At 60 link points, Kaorin. (The classmate who is obsessed with Sakaki.)
+++ At 70 link points, Neko Koneko.(The two white cats which are in magazines.)
+++ At 78 link points, Kimura.(The classics teacher with the huge mouth.)
Note: You can only achieve 78 link points if you have all 6-star cards
in your hand!
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
3.3 - Unlock List
\____________________________________/
Please note that any one action that unlocks something, will only unlock one
thing at a time. So, if you satisfy the conditions to unlock Hard mode, for
example, while in the same game satisfying the conditions to unlock Nyamo as
a playable character, the game will only unlock Hard mode, and not Nyamo.
The exception to this rule is the sound effects and CG pictures, which will
be unlocked even if something else is simultaneously being unlocked.
----------------------- -
3.3.a Extra Characters -
----------------------- -
+++ Unlock Yukari:
beat the Story Mode with Tomo, Osaka, Kagura, Yomi, Sakaki, and Chiyo.
+++ Unlock Nyamo:
beat the Story mode with Yukari. You must not lose a match during your
game, since you must fight Nyamo using Yukari to unlock her.
---------------- -
3.3.b Hard Mode -
---------------- -
Beating story mode with Nyamo WILL unlock hard mode, but it appears there is
a quicker way to do it. Some have reported unlocking it after their first game.
In my opinion, the most likely solution is that it can be unlocked earlier
by getting link number high enough (30) to launch Kamineko during a game, and
then finishing the game.
------------------- -
3.3.c CG pics & SE -
------------------- -
+++ The sound effect list for each character:
win any mode with that character.
+++ The CG picture #1 for each character:
win story mode with that character.
+++ The CG picture #2 for each character:
win sudden death mode with that character.
+++ The CG picture #3 for each character:
win hard mode with that character.
+++ The group CG picture:
win normal mode with all characters.
- -------------------- Section 4: Dialogue Translations ----------------- -
/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\
4.1 - Match Lead-In & Lead out
\____________________________________/
Just to make it clear, the dialogue system works like this:
When you come up against a computer opponent, she will say her "stock" welcome
phrase. (I've called this "Stock Start"). Your character will then reply, with
a phrase which is specific to your opponent ("Start"). After you win, the
computer opponent will say her stock "stock" loss phrase. ("Stock Lose")
And, your character will reply with a somewhat related comment ("Win").
Similarly, if you have lost the match, the computer opponent will say her
"stock" win phrase ("Stock Win") and you will reply in a character-dependant
fashion ("Lose").
When a character comes up against themselves, they will use only stock
phrases. Note that Tomo, Yomi, and Kagura will use different, more respectful
"stock" phrases when you come up against them while playing as a teacher.
Osaka, Sakaki, and Chiyo will use their standard "stock" phrases.
Please take note that I have taken some creative license with these
translations to produce the closest english meaning. For example, when Tomo
says "Yomi's habits are..", I have chosen to translate it as
"Yomi's reflexes are.." since we tend to refer to well-cultivated habits
as "Reflexes" in english, especially when discussing those in sports or games.
When Osaka says "Getting bigger!" I have translated it as "Getting better!"
since we don't usually talk about skill as if it were the size of a player
in english.
By all means, if you discover that you can produce a better translation,
even for one phrase, send it in and I will give you full credit.
----------- -
4.1.a Tomo -
----------- -
+++ Stock / vs Tomo
Start: "Today is a great day for a challenge. Go, Tomo's card fight series!"
Lose: "That.. That was stupid, wasn't it?"
+++ vs Osaka
Start: "What the.."
Win: "heh heh heh.. what are you going to do?"
Lose: "But.. no, someone must have been helping you cheat!"
+++ vs Kagura
Start: "This is where I put it all together!"
Win: "Very amusing..."
Lose: "No way.. no way.."
+++ vs Yomi:
Start: "With the power of love, I will cut you down, Yomi!"
Win: "Hehe-n!! Yay, Yay!"
Lose: "Damn.. Yomi's reflexes are too.."
+++ vs Sakaki:
Start: "Next is sakaki-chan! I'll have to use my athletic talent!"
Win: "Thankyou!"
Lose: "You slayed me, Sakaki.."
+++ vs Chiyo:
Start: "I am also flawless! Don't hold anything back!"
Win: "Hmph! The blood of a winner flows through my veins!"
Lose: "My flawlessness has been put to shame.. Chiyo really is a genius!"
+++ vs Yukari:
Start: "Not likely! I don't see why you're so confident!"
Win: "Now noone can claim I don't have skills! I'm so happy!"
Lose: "What.. Barbecue?? I want to have some tooooo!"
+++ vs Nyamo:
Start: "Oh, Nyamo-chan! I hope you've been practicing!
Win: "What a competition! I could feel the electricity in the game!"
Lose: "Damn!! I needed just a little more..."
------------ -
4.1.b Osaka -
------------ -
+++ Stock / vs Osaka:
Start: "I think I mostly know the rules.."
Win: "Today, it's a win. Today, I am the lucky one!"
Lose: "I guess I don't know them so well after all.."
+++ vs Tomo:
Start: "I just started playing these cards too."
Win: "Tomo-chan, you're pretty weak!

More to come on the Dialogue translations, if there turns out to be any demand.
For the most part, they are all one-liners reflecting the personality of the
character, or referring to episodes of the show. If you desperately need to
know them, email me and I'll do my best to add some more.
