- VIRTUA FIGHTER ANIMATION FAQ/MOVELIST ---------------------- SEGA GAME GEAR -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- HISTORY -------------------------------- From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual -
- Eight Fighters, Eight Techniques… -------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- In ancient China, a powerful Kung Fu technique known as Hakkyoku-Ken --------
- ("the Eight-Point Fist") was developed by the Imperial Guard. This ----------
- technique won great admiration and many followers. Around the time ----------
- of the Second World War, the Japanese army developed their own --------------
- Hakkyoku-Ken techniques in order to create the ultimate fighting force. -----
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Now, the only active master of Hakkyoku-Ken – a young man named -------------
- Akira Yuki – sets off to travel the world in search of enlightenment… -------
- and worthy opponents. -------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- He finds them in the World Fighting Tournament, where the strongest ---------
- fighters have gathered to determine who stands supreme in the art of --------
- hand-to-hand combat. Any and all techniques are allowed, as long as the -----
- contestants use no weapons but their own bodies. After weeks of intense -----
- dueling, seven other warriors remain: ---------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Sarah Bryant and her brother Jacky, both skilled in Sekken-Do… --------------
- Lau Chan and his daughter Pai and their special variations of Kung Fu… ------
- The ruthless professional wrestler Wolf Hawkfield… --------------------------
- The ninja Kagemaru and his mysterious Hagakure techniques… ------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- All eight of these fighters have arrived to test their methods --------------
- and their might against each other. Who will stand victorious? --------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- repeated but you must wait a moment between hits. --------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Recovery: -------------------------------------------------------------------
-- When you're knocked off your feet you'll get up automatically after a ------
-- few seconds but during that time your opponent might try to stomp ----------
-- on you. Quickly tap any button to get on your feet as soon as possible. ----

------------------------------------------ From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual -
- "Akira is an especially difficult character to use well, as most of his -----

-- his Mouko Kohazan and Renkan Tai are formidable distance attacks." ---------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section ------------------ Playing AKIRA YUKI on the SEGA Game Gear -
- I'm amazed of how many complex special moves have been carefully put on -----
- AKIRA for the portable version of Virtua Fighter! Most people criticizing ---
- this game as pure crappyness are only aware of a couple of special moves ----
- per character. AKIRA has much more than the obvious jumping double kicks ----
- and elbow/palm special moves. Unbelievably, AKIRA's Body Check and Reverse --
- Body Check moves are here, with execution and timings as hard as the ones ---
- on Arcade or PC versions. The Game Gear control pad doesn't help but you'll -
- be more happy playing as AKIRA in a Game Gear Emulator and using a keyboard -
- (programs like MEKA or FUSION could be of help here). -----------------------
- The Pull-in & Push-out (a gigantic shoulder-slam executed as a throw --------
- move) is also in the game: try it after blocking any move that leaves -------
- your opponent really close to you… good for sending opponents flying --------
- off the ring! ---------------------------------------------------------------
- On a possibly undiscovered move: the Hougeki Unshin Soukoshou (a close to ---
- opponent move from Virtua Fighter 2) could be in this game, as all the ------
- moves required to pull it off are also in. Said move is composed of the -----
- Stun Palm, immediately followed by a Reverse Body Check and a Double Palm, --
- VF2 Arcade movement looking like what follows: P+K+G > B,D&F+P+K > B+P. -----
- Proving there is an 8-bit version of this move (also known as the Stun Palm -
- Combo) is near to impossible due to more-complex-than-life control-pad ------
- motions and button presses and, above all, never seeing computer controlled -
- AKIRA pulling this one out. -------------------------------------------------
- On a less than transcendental style of gameplay it is important to note -----
- that moves like the single or double palm must be executed from a full ------
- crouching position: making AKIRA crouch punch or kick is the fastest way to -
- immediately go full-crouch. This means that, after any low punch or kick, ---
- you can input the rest of the palm move: good for comboing a single palm ----
- after some low punching or kicking. -----------------------------------------
- Also, an easier-to-do motion for the Reverse Body Check is available: -------
- once close to opponent press BACK then DOWN and both PUNCH and KICK buttons -
- simultaneously. You can try it immediately after blocking, or, more ---------
- awesomely, after a blocked single palm. Reverse Body Checking after one of --
- your mid-level kicks gets blocked seriously close is also a way to do it. ---
- With this character, very much like in the Arcade or PC versions, practice --
- makes perfect (add a little patience on the way too). AKIRA remains, as in --
- other versions of this game, the most difficult character to master. --------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- JACKY ------------------------------------------------------------- PROFILE -
-- Full Name: Jacky Bryant --------------------------- Nationality: American --
- Occupation: Indy Car Racer ------------------------------- Hobby: Training --
-- Technique: Sekken-Do/Jeet Kune Do -------------------- Birthday: Aug. 28 ---
-- Specialty: Spin Kicks, Drop Attacks ---------------- Blood Type: A ---------
----------------------------------------- From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual: -
- "Jacky is perhaps the best all-around character, with high rankings in ------
-- speed, agility, and power, plus a wide array of vicious combos. His stomp --
-- attack is almost impossible to avoid. Another arcade favorite!" ------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- MOVES -

- Double Punch, Elbow & Spin Kick: ---- P,P,F+P,K -----------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section ---------------- Playing JACKY BRYANT on the SEGA Game Gear -
- Powerful and stylish character. People who can't do much more than JACKY's --
- spin kicks and back knuckles still end up making bad reviews about this -----
- game. Ignoring the majority of the game's special moves doesn't make the ----
- game bad: it just makes the players look stupid. Hope this FAQ changes that -
- a little bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------
- When opponents miss a jump-and-stomp move you can punish them with a --------
- Somersault Kick or a Double Spin Knuckle. -----------------------------------
- If your opponent blocks a Double Spinning Kick you're in the right place to -
- follow up with a Northern Light Bomb (attention: you can get thrown too!). --

- Occupation: Ninja ---------------------------------------- Hobby: Mahjong ---
-- Technique: Hagakure-ryu Jujitsu ---------------------- Birthday: June 6 ----
-- Specialty: Body throws, remote attacks ------------- Blood Type: B ---------
----------------------------------------- From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual: -
- "Kage is probably the most agile of all the fighters, and is a terror to ----
-- watch when played well. His roll kicks combine defense with a surprise -----
-- offense, while his somersault attacks make him a threat from halfway -------
-- across the ring. Be careful, though, as abusing his Rairyuu Hishou Kyaku ---

- Opinion Section ------------------- Playing KAGE-MARU on the SEGA Game Gear -
- I remember thinking this game sould not be about combos at all and then -----
- picking KAGE, an awesome fighter if you wish to kick ass from nearly --------
- anywhere on the ring. Aproaching mid-range or closer distances puts you in --
- a very good position to get your opponent on the ground: either catapulting -
- yourself from far or using one of KAGE's various-ranged sweep attacks. Try --
- following every knockdown with a ground stomp attack! KAGE's side kick is ---
- a great way to get in close and personal: try using any throw attack right --
- after one of your mid-level kicks… you'll be Ten-Foot Tossing your ----------
- opponent's a$$ sky-high into the air in no time! ----------------------------
- About playing KAGE on other versions of Virtua Fighter: if you happen to ----
- play Virtua Fighter for the PC you can extend your kick-ass abilities even --
- further. In VF1/VF2 you can Somersault Kick your opponents in the air, ------
- right after a Ten-Foot Toss! Impressive ninja skills for the man in blue! ---

----------------------------------------- From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual: -
- "Although less powerful than her brother, Sarah is Jacky's equal in agility -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section ---------------- Playing SARAH BRYANT on the SEGA Game Gear -
- Trained Virtua Fighter 2 SARAH players can turn any fight into a serious ----
- kick-ass experience. Comparing SARAH and JACKY i imagine knee and elbow -----
- techniques far more realistic, faster and more effective than going around --
- spinning arms and legs 'till someone gets dizzy. However, what players get --
- here is a toned down version of Miss Bryant: one that does not compare well -
- to JACKY. When trying to push opponents back her Double Joint Slam is -------
- comparable to her brother's Double Spinning Kick, except it gets blocked ----
- much more often, making it less useful when looking for damage. Also her ----
- Middle Kick is not as powerful as the ones heavy characters display: after --
- such an attack no one is lying on the ground so you have to follow up with --
- a special move or a combo. In this version of SARAH, contrary to Arcade or --
- PC versions, sequences like P,P,K or P,D+K leave the opponent standing so ---
- if you greatly wish to put your opponents to the ground you better use some -
- simple P,K combos or effectively triple-punch and somersault the bastards! --
- Tired of getting your knee attacks blocked? follow them up with a Suplex: ---
- this leaves opponents pretty close so you can ground stomp them after it… ---
- shall they dare to rise they're right in the place for a Neck Breaker Drop… -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- PAI --------------------------------------------------------------- PROFILE -

-- Technique: Ensei-Ken ---------------------- Birthday: May 17 ---------------
-- Specialty: Intercepting fighting style -- Blood Type: O --------------------
----------------------------------------- From SEGA Virtua Fighter PC Manual: -
- "Unlike her father, Pai has learned that the best defense is a strong -------
-- offense. She can grab her attacking opponents and throw them to the --------
-- ground, and her stomp attack has a fairly high success rate. ---------------
-- As a handicap, try playing without her rapid punch moves and ---------------
-- concentrate on throws instead." --------------------------------------------

- Renkan Hai Tenkyaku/Triple Punch & Kickflip: ----- P,P,P,U&B+K --------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section -------------------- Playing PAI CHAN on the SEGA Game Gear -
- No fragile unprotected girl here. Want to make opponents flip over their ----
- necks? Got the best standing kick in the game for that! PAI is a great ------
- character for introducing yourself to the classic "triple punching and some -
- kind of kick" Virtua Fighter combo system. Basic but solid fighter with -----
- techniques similar to LAU but much more complete in the combo department. ---
- Ability to finish combos with high or low spinning kicks and a couple of ----
- gameplay details save PAI from being the totally bland character LAU ends ---
- up to be. Try the reversal move: catch a punch or kick and your opponent ----
- ends up in the ground. Normal throws also leave PAI right next to her -------
- opponents, so you might want to make 'em kiss the floor all over again. -----
- Good character for novice players to get a good idea on the gameplay --------
- before they start picking up any favourites. --------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- WOLF -------------------------------------------------------------- PROFILE -

- "A human juggernaut, Wolf is a power player's character. True to his --------
-- wrestling background, Wolf moves with a slow but relentless brutality. -----
-- Use his rushing move (Shoulder Attack) with caution - if your opponent -----
-- blocks low, you could go flying off the edge of the ring! Wolf's Giant -----

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section -------------- Playing WOLF HAWKFIELD on the SEGA Game Gear -
- This is the warrior to pick if you wish to teleport your opponent's a$$ -----
- into oblivion. Aspiring a cool victory? Giant Swing your opponent out of ----
- the ring! -------------------------------------------------------------------
- Playing WOLF on the Game Gear is a nice, easy and empowering experience. ----
- His moves flow well together and you'll find yourself easily linking --------
- techniques, quickly bringing opponents closer to a knock out. His set of ----
- moves can be linked together not in many different ways so, i don't end up --
- playing WOLF very often… but when i do, oh, he rocks big time! Try using ----
- Body Slam after a blocked Face-Lift Kick or Shoulder Attack! Use a Ground ---
- Stomp Attack after the Slam! Unblocked mid-level kicks also put you right ---
- in position for an easy ground attack. Defense-wise WOLF can turn the fight -
- to his favour in no time: if you find yourself close to the end of the ring -
- just calm down and remember: you have Backfall Suplex. Anytime opponents ----
- try to stomp you and fail you can punish them with a Sonic Upper. -----------
- Picking WOLF is a nice change of speed to a less frenetic, more powerful ----
- style of gamelay. Mastering this version of WOLF enables you to put a -------
- steady big pressure on all opponents… with pleasant consequences. -----------

- LAU --------------------------------------------------------------- PROFILE -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Opinion Section -------------------- Playing LAU CHAN on the SEGA Game Gear -
- It's easy to see that, in this version of Virtua Fighter, LAU's set of ------
- moves can hardly be considered an "arsenal": triple punching can't be -------
- followed by any spining kick (like PAI CHAN) leaving you with just a --------
- kickflip to follow the punches. Also his throw moves have been reduced ------
- to a single basic throw. All this downgrading leaves LAU posing as an ------
- overly simplistic character, the least fun to play with. --------------------
- On the good side the most awesome thing you can do with him is being able ---
- to land one of his Knife-Hand combos: the second punch knocks the opponents -
- down, just in time for them to receive a spinning kick while in mid-air, ----
- knocking their miserable bodies to a very good distance away from you -------
- (this is the only moment you can see LAU as a Master… assuming the opponent -
-- took your first-strike unguarded AND has eaten the combo all the way). -----
- LAU can be a winner but, as i see it, interesting fighting games were -------
- never about winning but about practicing to awesomeness… unfortunately, ----
- this version of LAU doesn't offer very much in the path of awesomeness, -----
- due to a sadly limited number of moves and combos. --------------------------

- Playing silver DURAL you'll face golden DURAL as the final boss. This -------
- beast can easily combo an elbow and a somersault kick (all hail the unholy --
- roboticized martial arts of doom!). This inhumanly quick move is great ------
- punishment for any opponent that misses a jump-and-stomp move on you! -------
- The ability to only double-punch and the slow air Stomp Attack are the only -
- disadvantages in playing this cold steel fighter. Why a woman using a -------
- metal-skin should be treated as a light-weight character is also a decision -
- somewhere beyond my understanding, but ends up DURAL is indeed quick on the -
- majority of her moves and combos. -------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS -
- Big thanks to SEGA for making this serious kick-ass game available on the ---
- GAME GEAR. Credit to Eric Paiva for his Genesis VF2 FAQ and to whoever ------
- runs
http://virtuafighter.com/commands section: these resources where -------
- fundamental when searching for correct naming of character moves. -----------
- Thanks to all people that made bad reviews about this game and also to ------
- players that apparently like V.F. Animation but end up playing as if there --
- were no special moves available: without these people my rage wouldn't be ---
- enough for coming up with the FAQ this game deserves. May it guide all ------
- lousy players to a new level of gameplay. -----------------------------------
