12/22/01 (Version 1.0): *MAJOR UPDATE*
First version of FAQ. Added everything. Not bad considering I don't get
the game for another 3 days (but I rented it, so I know what I'm doing)!

12/23/01 (Version 1.1):
Fixed how to get several trophies. I also added some stuff to the
introduction and one-player mode introduction.

12/27/01 (Version 1.2):
Amended One-Player Mode Trophies Introduction. Clarified how to get
certain trophies. Also re-arranged the order of the trophy sections.

12/28/01 (Version 1.3):
Fixed a typo in how to get the Sheriff trophy. Decided to add a

Welcome to my Super Smash Brothers Melee in-depth Trophy Guide! Here I
have compiled a list of all the trophies in the game. I decided to make
this FAQ because there wasn't a full trophy list and how to get them in
any of the other FAQs, so I decided to take things into my own hands. I
split the trophies up into sections, to make it easier to read as to how
to get them. I hope this FAQ useful to you!

= 4. Trophies & Getting Them =

* Part I: One-Player Mode Trophies *

These are the trophies that you collect by completing the one-player
modes, like Classic, Adventure, and All-Star. There are three trophies
of each character, one for clearing Classic (no parenthetical note),
Adventure (Smash 1), and All-Star Mode (Smash 2). Not at all hard to
get. Also note that the Smash 1 trophies are RED and the Smash 2
trophies are BLUE.

You can get these trophies by playing a certain number of multiplayer
matches with that character. Here is the information:

Classic Trophy - 101 VS. Matches
Adventure (RED Smash 1) Trophy - 201 VS. Matches
All-Star (BLUE Smash 2) Trophy - 301 VS. Matches

Ex: If you play 101 VS. Matches with Mario, you will get the classic
trophy for Mario.

Any errors that have been made on a trophy will be listed in this
section.

- Samus Aran (#010) appeared in Metroid when it was first released
in 1986. They chose the later release date of the game for the
trophy description.

- The Great Fox (#179) made its fist appearance on StarFox 64 for N64,
not in StarFox on SNES.

- Daisy (#206) has a third eye on the back of her head.
To see the third eye: Center on the middle of her head, rotate to the
back of her head, angle her as if she's leaning forward just a bit,
and zoom in through her hair and ONLY her hair. You should see it.

Her appearance is listed as Mario Golf in the description, when it
really should be Mario Tennis. They also incorrectly added a hyphen
in Sarasaland and misspelled Tatanga's name.

- Meta-Knight (#240) made his first appearance earlier in Kirby's
Adventure, not Kirby Super Star. Though he was not mentioned by
name, you can clearly tell it is him.

- Ayumi Tachibana (#286) was the main character in the first Detective
Club, though it mentions her as appearing in only the second one.

"Errors":
- Some may say the Master Sword (#174) trophy appeared first in A Link
to the Past, not the Ocarina of Time. However, the reason for me not
calling it an actual error is because the Ocarina of Time takes place
before a Link to the Past. Gamers first saw it in a Link to the
Past, then the Ocarina of Time. It all depends on if you go by the
storyline or the times when the games were released.

[email protected] adds:
The Master Sword actually first appeared in the Legend of Zelda for
NES. Most will say the third sword is not the Master Sword, it's the
Magic Sword. If you were lucky enough to get one of the original
copies (the first 200 copies that came out with the system) then when
you talk to the guy who says something about it, he calls it the
Magic Sword in the first world and the Master Sword in the second
world, and it is slightly stronger in the second world. So, if you
want to get really technical, that was the first appearance, even
though the game doesn't fit into the storyline, but it was the first
one released.

In the European version, its first appearance is stated as A Link to
the Past.

If you change the text to Japanese, it has the Super Famicom and N64
initials in the box where it states the first appearance.

- Birdo (#166) is called a she in SSBM, but in Super Mario Brothers 2,
it's a he. The reasons for this is because the people who wrote the
manual thought it would be funny. They decided to call her a him,
thus making "him" a cross-dresser. Depending on if you want to go by
the manual or other games she was in, it could be considered an error.

On a side note, Birdo is called Ostro in the Super Mario Brothers 2
instruction manual. The creature the ShyGuy is riding in the credits is
called Ostro. Chances are there was an accidental name swap during
translation.

- Birdo was present in Super Mario RPG as one of the bosses in Nimbus
Land, meaning it was not absent after Super Mario Bothers 2.

You will acquire some of these trophies after you meet the requirement
and then do something else. For example, I got the DK Jr. trophy
after playing through Adventure Mode with Luigi, just after beating
Classic with everyone.

2. Why are the distances for the Home Run Derby so weird?

The reason for these "weird" distances in feet is rather simple. The
game awards trophies based on the distance in METERS. I have the
meter distances next to the feet distances.

3. What's the order in the Normal listing?

Here goes:
-First 78 are playable characters
-Next 6 are opponents
-Next 36 are the items and the Pokeball Pokemon
-Then comes the Character Properties
-Followed by the Stages and Related Items
-The Game Series trophies, which include: Mario, DK, Zelda, F-
Zero, StarFox, Metroid, Kirby, Earthbound, and Pokemon.
-Finally, there are the various extras & selections from other games.

4. After I hit B in the Gallery, does that trophy total on the bottom
include repeats?

No it does not. That is the total number of different trophies you
have. The x## in the right hand column shows how many times you got
that trophy.

5. How do you get the Tamagon trophy?

Import a Japanese GameCube and a Japanese version of Super Smash
Brothers Melee. Or, you could just accept the fact that it's not in
the American version.

6. Why was Tamagon removed from the American version of the game?

The name of the game it was in, when translated from Japanese to
English, contained the word "devil" (Devil World). And Nintendo of
America thinks games that have the word "devil" in it are VERY bad.
Blasphemy, I believe.

7. My chances of getting a new trophy is 0.0% in the lottery, but I'm
still missing some trophies!

As the game informs you of a milestone in trophies, which is having
50, 100, 150, 200, or 250, more trophies will be available for you
from the lottery. Once you reach the milestone, you can get them by
picking them up or winning them in the lottery.

8. Is there anything trophy related that's different when you change
the game to Japanese text?

If you check out the Collection, you'll notice several differences.
The NES is replaced by the Famicom, the SNES is replaced by the Super
Famicom, the SSB box and game are now the Japanese versions, the
Virtual Boy is there, and finally the SSBM frame above the shelves is
in Japanese.

9. What's the best way to get a high combo in Training Mode?

[email protected] suggests:
Use Ness against a standing Bowser on Princess Peach's Castle at 2x
speed. I cornered him against the wall and stood a little bit away
from him and used PK Fire on him really fast and constantly. If you
just hold forward and keep pressing B, you should get a really high
combo.

[email protected] also suggests:
Use Bowser and fight somebody heavy (preferably another Bowser). Set
it to human and have it slowly walk towards you the whole time. Hold
down the B button on your controller to keep a constant stream of fire
on the other player. It works better when he starts out at 30-50%
damage.

[email protected] suggests this really good method:
With any two characters, go to the Fourside level. Put the CPU
against the middle building on the second platform. Take your guy up
there and while the computer is up against the wall, keep tapping A.
You can get a combo as big as you want.

Stop sending me ways to get combos. Three is more than enough. Thank
you.

10. Is there a website where I can see the pictures/descriptions of the
trophies?

11. What do I get for getting all 290 trophies?

Bragging rights and satisfaction of having the trophies part 100%
complete. As disappointing as it may seem, that's all you get.

12. Is there any way to see the total number of coins I have (spent and
saved)?

Unfortunately, there is no way.

13. Any tidbits of information?

In the Japanese version, the "trophies" are referred to as "figures."
Apparently, Nintendo localization translators mistranslated "figyua"
(figure in English) as "trophy." This makes sense too because if you
look at the "trophies," they look more like action figures as opposed
to a trophy you'd get for winning something.
Also, in the Japanese version, the lottery machine is replaced with the
"FiguPon" (a figure reference). Gambling is illegal in Japan, which is
probably the cause of the name change.

14. Any interesting additions concerning the trophies?

If you change the lighting on the Ganondorf (#064 to #066) trophies to the
black background, his eyes will become red. This is not a lighting effect,
his eyes will actually turn red. It's a cool addition.

Also, if you change the background color to green (press Start 1 time) or
blue (press Start 5 times) on the Paper Mario (#203) trophy, he will
begin to glow.

If you change the background color to red (press Start 2 times) on the
GameCube (#290) trophy, it will become purple.

If you press start once on the Classic Link trophy (#007), the TriForce
on his sword will start to glow in a weird way.

15. How do I get the Mario Riding Yoshi and Helmet-less Samus trophies?

As of right now, the only way would be with a GameShark. Those trophies
were given out as promotions in Japan, and there's no telling if the U.S.
will have a similar promotion.
