0.1 - Version History
---------------------
Last updated to v1.0 on 24/03/2002.
1.0 - 24/03/2002 - This had been sitting on our computer for a few weeks now,
so I finally decided to put on all the necessary fluff to
make it a nice FAQ. This version includes the four lists
(Basic, Mushroom, Metal, Mushroom and Metal), descriptions
of each list, and a handful of notes. Okay, more than a
handful. Practically complete on its own, it already
deserves a starting version number of 1.0.
------------------
0.2 - Introduction
------------------
The Nintendo GameCube game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, probably does not
need an introduction if you are already looking at this FAQ, and if you don't
know what this game is then you're probably better off looking somewhere else
to start. Especially since this FAQ reveals all of the characters and one of
the hidden arenas.
The objective in most modes of play is not to get knocked out of the
arena, and to try to knock the others out. The characters have various
weights, which we compared using the platforms in the Mushroom Kingdom arena,
that act as a scale.
As might be expected, lighter characters are generally easier to get
knocked off the screen. But while heavier characters might stay on even with
more damage, they may be slower in movement or have more trouble jumping back
on when they do fall. As well, certain items may change a character's weight
during a melee.
The purpose of this FAQ is to list the characters' various weights
(weight listing (as opposed to weight lifting)), for those who might want to
somehow use that knowledge in their strategies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------
1.1 - Basic List
----------------
This list, as all of them will be, are listed from the lightest to the
heaviest. Those who occupy the same line have the same weight. The number on
their left is not their weight, but their ranking according to lightness, from
#001 being the lightest to #162 being the 162nd lightest. Subtract this
number from 163 if you want their ranking according to heaviness.
The 27 characters in the Basic List have 17 different relative weights.
The Basic List remains the same if all characters that are compared have
the same status - all Poisoned, all Super, all Metal, or all in the same
combination of any of those. The list also holds true in the Tiny and the
Giant Melees.

-------------------
1.2 - Mushroom List
-------------------
The Super Mushroom first appeared in Super Mario Bros. for the arcade and
Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom in Japan) as the Magic Mushroom. It
doubled Mario and Luigi's height and allowed them to take another hit from
enemies. In this game, it increases a fighter's size and weight (but the
weight does not seem to be doubled according to our tests). Power is also
increased. The proportions seem to be the same as that in Giant Melee.
The Poison Mushroom first appeared in the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2
for the Famicom. The game was first officially released to the rest of the
world in the Super NES (Super Famicom) Mario compilation game, Super Mario
All-Stars, under the name Super Mario Bros. - The Lost Levels. It was
practically like an enemy - it shrunk Super Mario and Super Luigi back to
their "normal" state, or killed them if they weren't yet Super - but it hid in
blocks just like its Super counterpart. In this game, it decreases a
fighter's size and weight (but the weight does not seem to be halved according
to our tests). Power is also decreased. The proportions seem to be the same
as that in Tiny Melee.
Getting both Mushrooms negates the effects of both of them.
Mario can always do his taunt in which he Supers up, even after touching
a Mushroom, but his taunt does not increase his weight.
The 81 characters in the Mushroom List have 49 different relative
weights.
If all players are Giant, Super, Poisoned, or Tiny, the Basic List will
suffice in all comparisons. Therefore, this list is most useful in comparing
fighters of different Mushroom statuses.

1.3 - Metal List
----------------
The Metal Box first appeared in Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. When
Mario hit it, a Metal Cap came out of it, allowing Mario to become invincible
and to sink to the bottom of watery areas. In this game, it increases a
fighter's weight dramatically once it is hit (no Metal Cap), more than that of
a Super Mushroom.
The 54 characters in the Metal List have 34 different relative weights.
This list is really only here for completion, as it's clearly useless -
even the lightest characters, when Metal, are heavier than the heaviest of the
non-Metal characters.

relative weights.
This is the most complete list of weights that can be found in a single
melee. Besides just combining the Mushroom List and the Metal List, this list
also includes characters who are both Metal and been affected by a Mushroom.

2.1 - Interesting Tidbits
-------------------------
-see the beginning blurb of each list for facts about the Mushroom and Metal
items.
-I said that the Mushrooms negate each other, instead of just adding on their
typical effect. If one gets a Super Mushroom and grows, then gets a Poison
Mushroom, the Poison Mushroom and the Super Mushroom cancel each other out,
and the character reverts to its normal size. If the character didn't
revert, but had the shrinking effect added to the growing effect, it would
seem to be the same, but when the first Mushroom wears off, the character
should shrink to a small size, since the Poison Mushroom would still be in
effect. But that doesn't happen. Therefore, the opposing second Mushroom
actually has a negating effect, not an additional effect. Not that anyone
really cares...
-the weight differences are not the same as in the Nintendo 64 version, Super
Smash Bros. One example is that Link and Captain Falcon are not the same
weight.
-no weight changes:
-Mario's taunt does not change his weight.
-Kirby's Stone does not change his weight.
-characters' weight averages:
-until someone figures out how much their actual weights are, the mean
average weight is unknown.
-but, with 162 variations of characters, those at the average position are
the ones who hold the #081 and #082 positions. But instead of two of them,
there are six. At #081 are Poisoned Metal Mewtwo, Poisoned Metal Young
Link, and Poisoned Metal Roy, and at #082 are Super Mario, Super Luigi, and
Super Dr. Mario. Super Mario remains the "central" character! But I don't
know about Poisoned Metal Roy being "central"...
-and, with 94 different weights, you might say that those who have the 47th
and 48th lightest/heaviest weights (ignoring the number of characters that
share the same weight) would be the average. The 47th lightest or the 48th
heaviest are Super Mario, Super Luigi, and Super Dr. Mario, while the 48th
lightest or the 47th heaviest is Poisoned Metal Marth. Super Mario remains
the central character yet again!... But again so is a Poisoned Metal Fire
Emblem character...strange.
-but without variations, there are 27 characters in 17 weights. Taking the
14th character position or the 9th weight gets us to Zelda (as well as Peach
and Sheik). Zelda also has the 25th and middle weight in the Mushroom List!
Wow - Super Mario and Zelda really are central to the Nintendo universe!
-characters' size and weight extremes:
-the heaviest character, as you can see in the listings, is Super Metal
Bowser, and when played in Giant Melee, is a real challenge to control.
Give it a try!
-the lightest character, as you can see in the listings, is Poisoned Pichu,
and when played in Tiny Melee, is even lighter. Certainly a challenge to
survive, but if you somehow do as well as your opponents, Sudden Death will
be very exciting! Or quick.
-the biggest character possible would obviously be Mario, since he has his
taunt, though that does not increase his weight. Play Mario in a Giant
Melee with a Very High occurrence of Super Mushrooms in a small arena and
taunt! But if you do this in too high of an area, you may risk self-
destructing Mario off the top of the screen!
-the smallest character is either Pichu or Mr. Game & Watch, and they can be
a challenge to even see on the screen if you play them in Fixed-Camera Mode
in the Temple with a Very High occurrence of Poison Mushrooms. Without
those arrows that point to your character, it'd be difficult to play at all!
-weight:
-should technically be measured in Newtons (N), for weight is a force.
-is commonly measured in the imperial system by pounds (lbs.).
-in the metric system, instead of weight, mass is measured, and in grams (g).
Unlike weight, mass is generally constant throughout the universe, even on
different planets and in different mediums.

2.2 - What to Add?
------------------
This is my very first FAQ! Woo-hoo! I was quite surprised that there
was no Weights FAQ on GameFAQs before mine.
While it was fun to make, I don't actually plan at updating this FAQ very
much at all, unless there are corrections and the like that must be done.
But in the chance that this FAQ is popular and updates are demanded, and
that I have the time and drive to do so, here are some ideas of what I might
add:
-comparisons to the weights in the Nintendo 64 game Super Smash Bros.?
-if I could figure out how much Super Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms affect
weights percentage-wise, then I could figure out how the weights of the
"Mushroomed" and Metal fighters in the Giant and the Tiny Melees compare to
those in the normal and other Melees, assuming that Giant=Super and
Tiny=Poisoned.
-if I could figure that out, then I could weigh everyone on a scale, in units
like "Tiny Poisoned Pichu Units" or something. Or in barrel or crate
weight units. I might be able to weigh a few things in at least Poisoned
Pichu units with more controllers and cooperating players.
-if Pikachu's, Jigglypuff's, Pichu's, and Mewtwo's weight differences seem
consistent with those indexed in the Pokémon games, all of the characters'
actual weights and masses might be calculable.
-if only there was some way to figure out reasonable estimates of weights of
the other fighters, such as Sandbag, the Wire Frames, and Giga Bowser. If
there is, and the above are figured out too, I could add in impossible
weights such as Poisoned Metal Sandbag and the like.
These ideas seem mostly useless or mostly just for interest's sake, but
if you can deal with all the fuzzy math, drop me an e-mail if you have any
ideas to contribute, or if you just want to encourage me to try.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------
3.1 - Legal Stuff
-----------------
Sorry about my sometimes not-clear writing in this area. But most of the
legal stuff is pretty much a given, despite my poor grasp of Legalese. In
short, don't do anything that might get you into trouble, and if you don't
know, ask someone who would know. Really, if everyone who reads this has
common sense and a conscience, this section shouldn't even be necessary.
-the game -the game (and practically everything directly related to it) is
copyrighted and owned by Nintendo. And HAL Laboratories and anyone
else who may have actually contributed to it. Basically, read the
credits in the manual or shown in the game at the end of the 1-P
modes. Needless to say, it will be those people who you will be
upsetting if you somehow violate their copyrights.
-this FAQ -certainly the information contained in this FAQ is just a
presentation of facts from the game owned by its respective, uh,
owners. I can't own knowledge of weight differences in a popular
video game. But this FAQ was written by me, Jonathan Leung,
(and especially for use on GameFAQs <www.gamefaqs.com>). Me and my
brother spent our time figuring this out, and it wasn't always a
walk in the park (why don't you try weighing one Super character
against another character that's Poisoned and Metal, with one of
you being a single Ice Climber? Not fun...), so if you formally
use big chunks of these particular lists elsewhere, your conscience
should be telling you to make some mention of me and/or this FAQ.
Otherwise, it's all pretty much okay.
---------------------
3.2 - Closing Remarks
---------------------
I don't know how actually useful this information was to most of you
Super Smash Bros. Melee fans, but here it all is. In my very first FAQ!
I hope you enjoy this list, as, like I said in the Legal Stuff section,
weighing was not always easy, especially in cases with a Poisoned Metal
character and a Super character. And sometimes with the Ice Climbers, the
other Ice Climber just kept getting in the way. Errrgh.
But unless I've made an error, the lists are pretty much done, and there
you go.
GameFAQs rules!
I'd make mention of my friends at the GameFAQs message boards, but I'm
sure I'll forget someone... I'm sure you all know who you are...
Thanks to everyone who made Super Smash Bros. Melee and the GameCube (in
other words, Nintendo and all their close buddies), and a hello to all of you
who played this game and to all the Nintendo fans. Thanks again to my brother
Jason, who helped me with this list, and forcing me to "Smash" all the time...
He also suggested the original concept, double-checked, and corrected my work.
Now stop reading this and get back to playing the game! Or some other
game! Or anything else actually productive (or supposedly so). This is the
end of the FAQ.
