Updates
------------

9/1/04: Version 1.6 - I've updated most of the world record strategies.  World
record times and my times are updated too.  As per usual, I made tons of very
minor changes and added a couple small things in various sections.

8/26/03: Version 1.5 - I decided to update the FAQ again.  All of the
strategies here are now the best known current strategies.  I changed the L
canceling section to include several different important strategies.  My best
times and the world records are updated.  I didn't add links to videos, but you
can find a site that will direct you to those videos in the introduction
section.

5/1/03: Version 1.4 - Er yeah... when I said it had been a while last update I
was only kidding.  Virtually all of the strategies have been updated and I've
have added some small things to several subjects, including adding sections and
updating records.  Soon I may add a list of videos of all of these records.

3/24/02: Version 1.3 - Whew, it's been a while.  Most of the strategies have
been updated, along with my personal records section.  I added a small note
about what L canceling is.

2/3/02: Version 1.2 - I replaced many of the old strategies with new ones,
either sent to my by e-mail or my own.  I updated almost every strategy, so I'm
not going to list them all here.  I added a miscellaneous section for
interesting tidbits that probably won't grow very big.  I also updated my best
times section.

1/13/02: Version 1.1 - I replaced some of my old strategies with new ones that
I was e-mailed.  These strategies are for Dr. Mario, Young Link, Pikachu, and
Pichu.  I added my own new strategies for Ness and Link.  I added a small
section on rewards for playing Break the Targets.  I updated my Best Times
Section.  I also fixed a few minor errors.

12/23/01: Version 1.0 - All the character's strategies are up with the best
strategies I know as of right now. I'll figure out faster ways eventually.

1. Introduction to Break the Targets
-----------------------------------------

The objective in Break the Targets is to break 10 targets which are placed in
specific places throughout a level as fast as possible. Each character has a
different level, and targets in some levels do different things. Some bounce
off of walls, some move in a specific pattern such as up and down or left and
right, and some are just stationary. As your total time gets lower, you'll earn
rewards for your accomplishments, explained in the next section. This guide
will help you get those trophies easily, and you'll have some bragging rights
over your friends.  This guide is a compilation of the best known strategies
that get the best times, no matter how hard they are.  If you are just starting
out with BtT, you will want to use simplified versions of these strategies
before you try the most advanced ones.

For BtT strategies that are easier but don't get quite as good of a time, you

5. Important Strategies
----------------------------

Jumping with X/Y/Up:

There are 3 ways you can jump: Up, X, or Y.  I use X 95% of the time, unless a
special situation calls for Up.  One such situation would be when you have to
jump and then jump again very very soon after.  Such is the case in Ness's
target 1, for example.  In this case, press Up and then X or Y right away.
Sometimes, when I have to jump followed by an up A attack, I also jump with Up.
This prevents you from doing an accidental double jump as you do the Up A
attack. This applies in places like Captain Falcon's first target.  However,
using X or Y is often better than using up for several reasons.  The main
reason is that when you need to move to the side while jumping repeatedly, you
will want to hold all the way to the side as you jump, so you hold to the side
while you press X or Y.  A lot of people say they have trouble hitting all the
targets at the bottom of Jigglypuff's level.  This is because they try to get
across jumping by pressing Up, left, up, left, etc, which is not as effective
as holding left as you continually press X or Y.  Using X or Y is also more
effective for when you need to do a short jump.

Short Hop:

This is when you press X or Y very lightly and let go of it quickly so the
character doesn't jump as high as if you just press in the button and hold it.
Basically, each character has a certain amount of frames (a frame is 1/60 of a
second) after you press the jump button before they actually leave the ground.
The numbers, depending on the characters, range somewhere between 3 and 7
frames.  You have to press the button and then let go of it within this small
time frame for the short hop to work.

L canceling:

L canceling is pressing L right before you land to cancel the lag from landing
after an aerial A attack.  I'll use a good example to make it clear.  Let's say
you're playing a melee match as Link.  You're in the air, and you use your down
A attack.  When you land, you are vulnerable to attacks while you stand there
pulling your sword out of the ground.  However, if you press L right before you
land, he will pull it out much quicker and you can run, walk, jump, shield,
etc., almost instantly after you land.  This is used in BtT because it helps
you recover more quickly after using some attacks and you can continue on to
the next target right away.  In several of the strategies, I have mentioned
that you need to L cancel.  Just practice it a bit and you will be able to do
it right every time.  Remember that L cancel only works as you land while using
one of the 5 aerial attacks; up, down, left, right, or neutral.

B attacks:

Normally if you are in the air and press to a side and press B, you will do
your forward B attack. If you are falling through the air facing one direction
and want to use a B attack in the other direction, you have to use a special
technique.  To do this, tap the other direction and quickly let go, and then
immediately press B.  This is used in strategies such as Mario's when you have
to throw fireballs, Sheik's when you have to throw needles, etc.

Air dodging/Wave Dashing:

Sometimes in BtT, instead of just landing, you want to air dodge to where you
want to go to get there faster.  For example, if you are falling towards the
ground, and once you land you want to start running, try this instead.  Fall
towards the ground, but right before you land, air dodge down-left of down-
right into the ground and then start to run.  You will slide into the ground
and then start to slide across it, then as you slide you can begin to run.
This is sometimes called a wavedash, so in the FAQ you'll find that I use both
of them interchangeably.

6. Character Strategies
----------------------------

a) Dr. Mario
-----------------

Note:  The world record for this level is held by countless people.  This is
because if you are fast enough to make it to the last platform in time, all you
have to do is perfect your jump to the last target and you will tie the world
record of 13.40 too.

1. Double jump to the right and land on the blue platform in the shape of an
"8".  Double jump again and press B at the highest point to throw a pill that
hits the target in the backwards "C".  Fall back to land on the second of 4
gray platforms.
2. Double jump and back A the target above, landing on the third gray platform.
L cancel.
3. Double jump to the fourth gray platform.  Do a running double jump off the
left side and throw a pill at the top left target.
4. Fast fall and back A the target below.  L cancel when you land on the gray
platform, which was previously known as gray platform 2.
5. Throw a pill to the left so it hits the target below you and to the left.
At this point, the gray platform should just be starting to go back in to the
right, and the clock should read about 5 seconds.
6,7. Fall below the platform, jump to the right, and air dodge up-right to land
on the same platform but on the other side of the blue wall.  Do a running
double jump to the right and Up A the target on the left side of the red wall,
and the other target next to it on the other side of the wall with the same
attack.  If you're going very fast, you'll have to wait until the gray platform
you are on is far enough to the right to make it.  Time your jumps well.
8. As you fall, shoot a pill to the left to hit the lowest target in the level.
Hold right so you slide off the red backwards "C" below you towards the gray
platform coming down on the right.
9. Double jump and Up B to hit the target to your right, and land on the
platform above.
10. Ride the platform up, double jump, and Up B to hit the top-right target.

b) Mario
-------------

1. Do a running jump to the right.  As soon as you leave the ground, down A
target 1, while still keeping your momentum forward.
2. Double jump after you recover from the attack and forward B through the
wall.
3,4. Fast fall slightly to the right and Up A the 2 targets below you as you
pass them.
5. Fall back towards the left and land.  Do a running quick double jump to the
left, and use the turn and throw technique to throw a fireball to hit the
bottom right target.  You should land 1 level below the starting point.
6. Run to the left and do a running jump so you scrape your head on the
ceiling.  While in the air, throw a fireball to hit the bottom left target.
Fast fall to save a bit of time.
7. Double jump to the left and air dodge down onto the gray platform coming
down.  If you're going at close to world record pace, you'll get there around
4.50-4.70 and the platform should be a good distance higher than where you jump
from when you land on it.  Do a semi-quick double jump and land on the next
highest platform.  Double jump and throw a fireball to the left, so it goes
under the target, bounces and hits the wall behind the target, then hits the
target itself.
8. Fall and press B to throw a fireball in the short alcove to the left.
9. Fast fall as soon as you throw the fireball.  Fall to the right and slip off
the very right edge of the gray platform below you.  Back A the target through
the small wall.
10. Double jump back to the right once you're below where target 9 was.  Before
your head hits the ceiling, turn and throw a fireball to hit the last target at
the right.

c) Luigi
-------------

1,2. Do a small jump back and back A the 2 targets behind you.
3. Fast fall and back A target 3.
4,5. Do an Up B to hit targets 4 and 5 with the weak coin hit so you grab the
gamecube at the top of the attack.
6. Press down to let go of the cube, and immediately rejump to the right. Once
you are above the cube, air dodge down right into it so you move down onto it
and slide to its right side.  As soon as you land and start to slide across it,
press A to punch target 6.
7. Run off the right side of the cube.  As soon as you leave the cube, use your
double jump and up A the target above and to your right.
8. Fall to the right and forward A target 8.
9,10. Continue to fall towards the bottom 2 targets, and hit them both with a
back A at the same time.

d) Bowser
--------------

1,2,3. Double jump just high enough so you can press B and barely hit the
highest target, then hold left.  You should hit the highest target, the target
to the right of where you start, slip off the platform you started on, and the
target to the right of the flipper.  You will immediately hit the bumper and be
knocked to the left.
4. As soon as you recover from being hit by the flipper, rejump to the left and
neutral or forward A target 4.  (You should still be facing right.)
5. Fast fall to the left and air dodge down-left into the ground right before
you land.  When you land, do a forward tilt A to the left to hit the target
through the wall.  You have to aim the tilt attack slightly upwards for it to
hit the target.
6,7. Press down to fall through the floor and fast fall to the ground below
you.  When you land, do an Up B and slide along the ground to the right so you
hit the target near you and slide off to hit the one to the right.  Fast fall
onto the platform below target 7.
8,9. As soon as you land you land, double jump and Up B to the highest step,
and try to fast fall onto it.  This will take away recovery time from the Up B.
Single jump backwards to the right over the small wall, and fast fall while
doing a down A to hit the next 2 targets.
10. L cancel when you land so you slip off the right side of the platform that
target 9 is on, still facing left.  The instant you slide off, double jump to
the right and back A and fast fall to hit the last target through the wall.

e) Peach
-------------

1. Press down B.  While Peach is in the pulling animation, hold the X or Y
button.  As soon as you finish pulling, run off to the left side and forward A
target 1 through the wall.  When you run off, you will start floating because
you started holding X or Y.
2. Let go of X or Y and fall to the right, throwing the turnip to the right to
hit the far target as soon as you can.
3,4. As soon as you recover from throwing the turnip, rejump and Up B to hit
the target that is to the left of where you start and the one that is above
where your start.
5. After your parasol hits target 4, glide to the right as far as you can.
Once you are very close to hitting the ground, press down to fast fall to the
ground and cancel out the landing lag. Pull another turnip as soon as you land.
Run to the right and once you clear the wall that hangs down, jump and throw
the vegetable at the target in front of you.
6. Do your double jump, and as you go up, regrab the vegetable you just threw
by pressing Z when you are right near it.  At the highest point of the double
jump, Up B to hit the highest target.
7. Drift to the right so your parasol hits the target at the top right part of
the level.
8. The instant you hit target 7, fast fall and maneuver yourself so you land
all the way at the bottom on the rightmost small sliver of a platform.  Press A
to throw the vegetable you've been holding at target 8.
9,10. Jump backwards to the left and neutral A to hit targets 9 and 10.

f) Yoshi
-------------

1. Jump up slightly, and then do your double jump to the right.  Do an Up B to
hit the target way up and to the right.
2. Land, turn left, double jump, and Up B to hit the target over the wall above
you.
3. Before you land, press A to do a neutral A attack that breaks the target you
are falling towards.  L cancel.
4. Immediately when you land, dash to the right and fast fall as you leave the
small platform.  Press A right away to hit that bouncing target to your right.
5. Continue to fall straight down, so that same neutral A attack breaks the
target below you.  Land with an L cancel.
6. Immediately throw an egg up and to the right to hit the rightmost target.
7. Dash to the left.  To save a little bit of time, when you get to the
incline, do a tiny jump and air dodge left.  (This is an optional move that
saves a bit of time.  You can actually do this up to 3 times in a row, but it's
difficult.)  This will make you slide across the floor quicker than running.
As you recover from this, continue to run for a small bit longer.  Right before
you get to the target in front of you, jump and do a back A attack to it,
keeping your momentum forward.
8. Do your second jump and do an up A attack through the floor of the backwards
"C" to hit the target inside it.  This takes practice to hit because you have
to be as close as possible for it to work.
9,10. Right after you hit target 8, fall back to the right, fast falling a bit
if you can, and back A through the wall to hit the last 2 targets.

g) DK
----------

1,2. Wave dash to the left and do a tilt down A to hit targets 1 and 2.
3. Do a running double jump to the left and Up B to hit the target there and
land to the left on the large blue flat area.
4. Double jump to the left and land on the small blue platform there.
Immediately double jump again a little bit to the right, and Up A the target
above.
5. Fast fall back onto the right side of the small gray platform.  Immediately
double jump backwards and do a back A attack on the highest target.
6. Fast fall and do a neutral A that hits both of the next 2 targets you are
falling towards AND land on the middle of the 3 long red platforms.  This takes
practice to get right.
8. Run to the right and do a small jump and a neutral A to hit target 8,
followed by fast falling back to the platform and L canceling.
9. Jump to the right and forward A target 9 through the ceiling.
10. Fast fall as soon as you can.  Fall to the right so you L cancel as you
slip off the right side of the platform.  As soon as you slip off, Up B to the
right to hit the last target.  At 8.95 which is the world record time, target
10 is moving upwards at about the same height as the platform you slip off.

h) Captain Falcon
----------------------

1. Double jump and do an Up A to hit the first target above you.
2. Land where the target was and L cancel.  Double jump up to the next platform
above you.  Now double jump straight up, wall jump off the inside of the right
wall, wall jump off the tiny left wall hanging down, and Up A through the
ceiling right as soon as you can.
3. Fast fall and back A target 3 in the air while falling left.
4. Fall off to the left, forward A, and immediately fast fall so the forward A
hits target 4.
5. Run to the left and jump and Up A the next target.  Fast fall and land near
the top of the slanted platform.
6. After you land, double jump up and do your Up A attack to hit the target
above you as you fall to the left.
7,8. Fall to the left as you're hitting the target so you slip off the left
side of the green platform.  Use your double jump and immediately use your
neutral A.  The first kick will hit the stationary target, and the second kick
will hit the target moving up and down.  Fast fall into the moving platform and
L cancel.
9. Do a running jump to the left through the left wall and as soon as you leave
the ground, do a forward A.  You should hit target 9 at the very end of the
attack.
10. Rejump back to the right, wall jump, and up A target 10.

i) Ganondorf
-----------------

1. Press A to hit the target going by you to from the left side.
2,3,4. Run to the right of that small platform and jump to the right.  Up A and
then fast fall so you hit 3 targets:  The one above and to your right, and the
2 next to each other moving towards the left.  L cancel.
5. Dash short hop to the left, double jump, and Up A the target in the middle
of the level.
6. Fast fall to the left onto the middle platform.  Do a running jump to the
left and forward A to hit all 3 targets that come together near the left
platform at once.  L cancel.
9. Dash and double jump to the right and up A to hit the target moving to the
right above you.
10. Land on the moving platform going by with an L cancel.  Jump and Up A the
last target, which is near the angled spiked wall to the left.

j) Falco
-------------

Note: If you're having trouble  hitting the fire block and targets 8-10
correctly, you can practice it without going through the rest of the level.
When the level starts, walk off to the right, then roll to the very right side
of the platform you land on.  Facing left, jump straight up.  You should hit
into the corner of the fire block that I specify in this strategy.  Let go of
all buttons as you are flying, until you have to do the down A.  This makes you
fly faster through the air on your way to target 8.

1,2. Double jump quickly to the right.  Shoot 2 lasers to the left while fast
falling.  The first laser will hit the target above the starting point, and the
second will hit the one to the left and below that.
3. Land on the right side of the small platform below and to the right of where
you start.  Still facing left, press A to punch target 3, the one that quickly
circles the main platform.
4. Dash off to the right and fast fall immediately.  As soon as you can, jump
right into the lower of the 2 small holes.  Press A to punch through the wall.
5. Run out to the left and as soon as you leave the ground, rejump up and back
A the target that was below you as you hit target 5 on your way up.
6. After hitting target 5, maneuver yourself to the right to land on top of the
platform on its left side.  Walk yourself to the very left edge, and as soon as
you are on the very edge, jump left and down B the target there, which will
appear a fraction of a second before you hit it.
7. Immediately after you down B target 6, rejump to the left and forward A
target 7, the one that goes around the octagonal fire block.
8. As you hit target 7, you will hit into the fire block yourself.  You have to
hit on the corner between the vertical left side and the angled down-right
side.  If you hit at just the right spot, you will be sent flying to the left.
You will slide along the platform you started on, and continue to fall towards
the left.  Right before your momentum carries you through the 2 left fire
blocks, down A the target between them.
9. Your momentum will continue to carry you to the left through the 2 fire
blocks.  As soon as you land by target 9, down B it.
10. Jump backwards out of the down B immediately, still facing left, so you do
a backflip towards the wall above the fire blocks.  Wall jump off the wall,
jump back towards the right, wall jump again, and immediately shoot a laser to
hit the target in front of you.


k) Fox
-----------

Note:  The best possible score you can get with this strategy if you have the
NTSC version of the game (Japan or North America) is 7.28.  This is the
earliest frame that you can hit target 10 through the wall.  In the PAL version
of the game (Europe), you can hit it as early as 7.18. There is a separate PAL
record for this level in the records list because of this.

1. Turn left and immediately do a short single jump.  At the peak of this jump,
shoot a laser to the left to hit the lower target to your left, and try to fast
fall back to the ground after you do this.
2,3. Immediately after you land, double jump up to the left and begin your up B
so you are a bit above and to the right of the higher of those 2 targets that
start to the left of you.  Right before you shoot towards target 3, the fire
surrounding Fox will hit the target near you.  Aim yourself so that same Up B
will hit the target above and to the right of you.  It will take practice to
hit both of these targets with the same Up B.
4. Fast fall to the platform below target 3.  Run off the right side and
immediately shoot a laser to the right to hit the target in the "U".  As you
land, do a running double jump to the right and air dodge down-right to land on
the right edge of the "U".
5. Do a running double jump to the right and air dodge up to land in the high
area with a target in it.  Punch it with A.
6,7,8. Press down to fall through the floor.  While falling slightly to the
left, shoot 5 lasers to the right.  The first, third, and fifth lasers will hit
the 3 targets to the right.  Land on the small gray platform at the bottom.
9. As soon as you land, do a small jump and shoot a laser to the left, and fast
fall back to the ground.  This will hit the target below where the starting
point.
10. When you land, jump up and to the left again right away and do a forward A
through the wall to hit target 10 on the other side of it.

l) Ness
------------

1. Press Up with the analog stick and immediately press X.  Forward A the
target above you and land above and to the left.  L cancel.
2. Run and to the left and short hop. Right before you land, rejump and do a
left B to hit the lower of the 2 targets in front of you.  If you time it
correctly, you should be able to immediately slide to the edge of the platform
which causes the "standing on the edge" position that cancels the lag time from
the forward B.
3. As soon as you land on the edge, jump and forward A the target above you.
Fast fall back to the platform to the right.
4. Run off to the right.  As soon as you can after you leave the platform,
forward A through the wall.
5. As soon as you recover from the forward A, rejump and land to the right on
top of the platform with an air dodge down-right. Double jump and air dodge up
onto the moving platform in the middle of the level.  Double jump to the right
to land on the first thin red platform.  Left B to hit the target to your left.
6. Wavedash backwards off the first platform to the right, then use your second
jump and use your back A to slip off the second platform.  Fast fall between
the second and third red platforms and forward A the target through the wall to
your left.  L cancel.
7. Still facing left, double jump out of the alcove and air dodge down-right to
slide off the right of the third red platform.  As soon as you slide off,
rejump to the right and back A target 7.
8. After hitting target 7, you will slide off the right side of the last red
platform.  Fast fall.  Now you are falling along the right side of the maze.
As you pass the last target in the maze hit it with a forward A through the
wall.
9,10. Continue falling to the left, double jump, and do a forward A to hit the
last 2 targets.

m) Ice Climbers
--------------------

1. Run off to the right, fast fall a tiny bit, then jump and forward A.  You
will break a hole in the platform above and hit the target to your right.  Try
not to break the platform you are landing on.
2. Jump through the hole you just made and air dodge down-left to land on the
platform to your left.  Run off the left side and double jump, with your first
jump slightly left, and your second slightly right, so you can press B to hit
the target to the left and land on the highest orange platform.
3. Facing left, double jump and back A the next target to your right.
4. Double jump and land on the cloud passing by.  Jump up still facing left and
Up A or forward A the next target, landing where the target was.
5. Do a running double jump to the left and press B when you are up against the
small wall, near the top of it.  You should shoot and ice block that will
barely go over that wall and hit the target on the left side of it.
6. Double jump and do an Up A to hit the target above you and land on the cloud
that is coming out of the left wall.
7. Jump up and a bit to the right towards the small cloud coming from the
right.  Right before you land on the cloud, do a neutral B attack to the right
which will hit the target to the right and below you.  When you land, there
should be zero recovery time.
8. Immediately jump up and above the highest blue platform and press B to hit
the target below and to the right.  You should slip to the edge of the platform
to cancel the recovery time, similar to Ness's target 2.
9. Turn left and double jump and forward A so you hit target 9 through the
floor.  L cancel.
10. Double jump and Up A the target in the claws of the bird. At the world
record time of 11.80, the target is directly above where target 9 was and
moving towards the left.

n) Kirby
-------------

1. Run off the right of the platform and immediately forward A the target in
front of you.
2. Fast fall as soon as you can, and Up B the next target.  Land in the alcove
above the platform.  It is very difficult to hit the target and land in the
alcove at the same time, so you will have to practice this move a lot.
3. Do a running jump out of the alcove to the left, jump 2 more times, and air
dodge down-right onto the platform to your right.  Immediately do a short hop
to the right, and right before you land, do a forward A to hit the target
through the wall.  L cancel.
4,5. Run to the left and fast fall when you get to the chute.  Neutral the 2
targets on your way down while holding right.
6,7. As soon as the attack is finished, jump back to the right as you do a back
A attack.  The attack won't hit anything, but doing the attack will move you to
the right slightly faster.  Jump again to the right, and fast fall to grab onto
the ledge.  As soon as you grab on, jump out of the hanging position to move
towards the 2 targets above you.  Rejump to the right and back A so you hit the
target in front of you and the one behind you with the same attack.
8. Fast fall and forward A the target below you.  Land on the small step with
an L cancel.
9. Do a small jump to the left with an air dodge down-left. Run off to the left
and forward A the target the instant you leave the ground.  Start to fast fall
right after you perform the attack.
10. Jump backwards and back A like you did on your way to target 6.  Jump to
the right once more and forward B the last target at the bottom right.

o) Samus
-------------

1. Double jump up and to the left and back A the target up there.  L cancel.
2. Do a running single jump to the right and Up A the highest target.
3. Fast fall to the right and land on the lower of the 2 small platforms that
are next to each other.  However, right before you land, do a smash forward B
to the left to shoot a missile that hits the leftmost target in the level.  It
is pretty hard to get the missile to go far enough while also managing to land
on the platform at the same time.
4,5. Jump backwards to the right and air dodge down-right to slide across the
small platform to your right.  Immediately jump back to the right, double jump,
and Up A target 4.  As soon as you hit target 4, fast fall a bit to the right
so the same attack also hits target 5.  Land on the edge of the rightmost
platform and L cancel.
6. Immediately run of the left on the platform you are on and fast fall.  As
soon as you can, down B to hit the target below you and have it explode you
upwards.
7. Rejump to the left and wavedash across the same platform you previously air
dodged onto.  Slip off the left of it and immediately press Z to shoot your
grapple at the target in front of you.
8. Fast fall so you barely slip off the platform below you, then continue to
fast fall into the alcove below.  As soon as you can, down B so the bomb
explodes you back upwards.
9. As soon as you begin to pop up, rejump to the right, and wall jump off the
right wall.  Press Z to shoot your grappling beam into the short hallway.  It
will hit target there and grab onto the wall behind it.  As soon as you see the
beam grab the back wall, press A.  This will pull you in through the short
hallway very quickly.
10. Fast fall to the left immediately, then double jump and Up B on the other
side of the wall to hit target 10.

p) Zelda
-------------

Note: Hold A when you select the level to turn into
Sheik before the level even starts.  When you need to restart, hold A when you
press Z.

1,2. Jump straight up, then use your double jump slightly to the right.  Wall
jump off the inside of the right triforce and Up A to hit the 2 top targets.
3. Immediately fast fall.  Right before you land on the starting platform,
press B to hit the target below and to your left.  You will land with no
recovery time.
4. As soon as you throw the needle for target 2, run and double jump to the
left and throw a needle to hit the leftmost target.
5. Fast fall straight down.  Before you land at the bottom of the level, turn
and throw a needle to the right to hit the bottommost target.
6. Single jump slightly to the right and throw another needle right before you
land on the small platform.  It should hit the target below the starting point.
7. As soon as you throw it, you should hold right to slip off the right side of
the small platform.  As you slip off, rejump to the right and press B right
before you land on the starting platform.  It should hit the bottom right
target.
8. Immediately after you land, do a running single jump to the right and press
forward A as soon as you leave the ground.
9. The instant you recover, rejump to the right and press B to shoot a needle
at the rightmost target.
10. Press A to neutral A the last target as you fall towards it.

q) Link
------------

1,2,3,4. Hold down-left before the level starts, and as soon as you can, press
B.  The boomerang will travel diagonally, but not hit anything yet.  Meanwhile,
jump backwards and do a down B as soon as you leave the platform.  Before
falling down too far, rejump back towards the starting platform.  Before you
land on the platform you started on, press Z and B in rapid succession.  The Z
will drop the bomb onto the target below you, then as you land on the starting
platform you will shoot an arrow at the target below and to the left of the
start.  The boomerang that you threw at the beginning will fly under you as you
drop the bomb and will curve up and hit the target to the right of where you
start, and the top-rightmost target.
5,6,7. Do a running double jump to the left and smash a boomerang down-left
into the target you're approaching.  The boomerang you just threw should bounce
off the first target you throw it at and then hit the two to the right of it.
8,9. Right before landing on the moving platform, rejump and immediately do an
air dodge to the left and press Z to hit the 2 targets to the left with your
hookshot.
10. If you were fast enough, that same boomerang you just threw will curve
around to hit the last target on the right side of the level at the same frame
or slightly after you hit target 9 with the hookshot.

r) Young Link
------------------

1. Walk to the right side of the chute and weak throw a boomerang down and to
the left.  It will travel over your head and hit the target through the wall to
the right.
2,3. Single jump up towards the right wall.  When you get near it, wall jump
off the right, left, right, left, and right walls, then double jump out of the
chute and land at the right edge of the left side.  To wall jump, push the
analog stick in the opposite direction of a wall that you are against in the
air.  You might want to practice this a few times before trying this level.  As
you are traveling up the chute, the two top right targets should be hit with
the boomerang.  If not, start the level over.  You're going to need to
experiment to see exactly when to jump and how fast to jump to manipulate the
boomerang to hit the two targets up there.
4,5,6,7. Land on the right side at the top of the chute, but before you land,
take out a bomb.  Make sure you're on the very right edge of that small
platform, then smash a boomerang to the left and slightly down so it bounces
off the platform you are on and goes back over your head.  It will go behind
you and hit the target in the box, the two to the right of it, and then curve
down and hit the bottom right target in the level.  It is very hard the get the
boomerang to bounce in exactly this way, and you will have to be standing on
the very right edge and throw the boomerang at just the right angle to get it
to work.
8. While the boomerang is traveling, smash throw the bomb down, still facing
left.  It should not explode at your feet, but rather go down the chute and hit
the target below you.
9,10. Run and double jump to the left over the flipper and forward A to hit the
target through the wall.  The backswing of the same attack will hit the target
behind you.  You will probably hit this second target at about the same time
the boomerang hits that last target at the bottom right of the level.

s) Pichu
-------------

1. Single jump back to the left, and as soon as you leave the ground, turn and
shoot a spark to the right.  The spark will hit the target to the right and
below where you start.
2,3. Fall to the left of the pendulum without landing on it.  As soon as you
recover from shooting the spark, rejump backwards and back A attack to hit the
target near you and the one inside the moving platform.  Fast fall into the
inside of the moving platform and L cancel.
4. Run out the left side, double jump up, and Up A the target above you.
5. Fall to the right and up A the target to the right of the one you just hit
as you fall.
6,7. Land back on the top of the moving platform.  Do a big running double jump
to the right and while your head is near the bottom black part of the third
diagonal platform, Up A to hit the 2 targets that are moving apart.
8. Shoot a spark to the right.  It will stick onto the wall that hangs down, go
around the bottom of it, and hit the target on the other side of the wall.  As
soon as you shoot the spark, fast fall down onto the pendulum.
9,10. After landing back on the pendulum, do a running short hop to the right.
Once you are lined up below the last 2 targets, do a down B that hits both of
them.

t) Pikachu
---------------

1,2. Double jump up and a bit to the right, and Up A to hit both targets above
you.
3. Fall back towards the left, and right before you land back on the grass,
shoot a spark to the left.  If you do it correctly, it will travel to the left
and hit the target at the bottom left of the level.
4. Do a running jump to the left and down B to hit the top leftmost target.
5. Do a running jump to the right, jump back to the left inside the "C", and Up
A to hit the target in there.  Fast fall to the inside of the "C".
6,7. Do a running double jump to the right and air dodge down-right onto the
moving platform.  Do a running jump to the right and do an Up A that hits both
targets at once.
8. Use your double jump to hit your head into the hanging vertical platform.
Press B to shoot a spark to the right to hit the target in the "U".
9. Fast fall along the left of the "U" and down to the ground.  As soon as you
land, do a running jump to the right and jump and do a down B to hit the top-
right target.
10. Your momentum will bring you out to the right side of the level. As soon as
you recover from the down B, use your double jump and up A to hit the final
target.

u) Jigglypuff
------------------

Note: Having trouble getting all the targets at the bottom of the level without
landing?  Read the section at the top of the FAQ about jumping with X or Y as
opposed to Up.

1,2. Do a small jump and press A.  Right when you hit the first target, hold
left to hit the target to the left with the same attack.
3. Jump to the left and fast fall onto the right lower fire block.  This will
send you flying towards the left.  But before you pass through the left 2 fire
blocks, immediately rejump so your momentum presses you against the top left
fire block.  As you are there, use your right A to hit target 3.
4. Fast fall from being pressed against that fire block, and as you pass
through the left fire blocks you will continue your momentum.  Use another jump
to get near the top left target and hit it with left A.
5. Fast fall down to the right and do a jump to the right followed by a drill
kick to hit target 5.
6. Land, run to the right, jump, and drill kick the next target in the air.
Try to wait awhile before jumping, so after you hit the target you can fall to
the right and fall directly to the bottom part of the level without landing.
7,8,9,10.  Fast fall around the right edge of the long platform.  As soon as
you are under it, jump backwards to the left and back A target 7 as you scrape
your head against the black part of the platform above.  Jump left again and
back A target 8.  Jump left again and back A target 9.  Jump left again and
back A target 10.

v) Mewtwo
--------------

1. Jump and Up A the target above you.
2,3. Rejump a bit to the left and do a back A so you hit the target that
travels with the boxes that shock you if you touch them and the one in the "U".
Fast fall onto the top of the moving box.
4,5. Do a small jump and jam on the B button while still facing right.  The
tiny bit of charging time will hit the target you are near and the actual shot
will hit the target to the right.
6,7. Fast fall to the left and through the platform to the left of the 2 large
pillars.  Before you land, Press A to hit the target coming out of the pillar
and the one traveling with the other moving box.  L cancel.
8,9. Do a small running jump to the right and neutral A the target there, then
after a bit, fast fall so the same attack hits the target below.
10. Double jump to the right as soon as you can and Up A to hit the last target
that is inside of the right pillar.

w) Mr. Game and Watch
--------------------------

1. Press A right away.
2,3,4. Double jump to the right and forward A and fast fall.  You will hit the
target above you, the one above the roof, and the one in the door.  L cancel.
5,6,7,8. Run to the left and do a quick double jump.  Do a neutral A so you hit
all 4 targets around you.  To get the best possible time, you have to do the
attack so all 4 targets break in 2 loud explosions.
9,10. Fast fall to the left, do a running jump to the left, and Up B the last 2
targets on the left side of the level.

x) Marth
-------------

Note: The PAL version of this level is harder to get a better time on because
you can't bounce off the last flipper in the same way as in the NTSC version of
the game.  There is a separate PAL record for this level in the records list
because of this.

1. Run off the right side of the level. Fast fall and Up B the target at the
bottom right and turn back towards the platform. Catch onto the side of the
level.
2. Press X to jump into the maze from the hanging position. Jump and Up A and
land on the left platform inside the maze.
3. Double jump out of the maze and up A through the ceiling to hit the target
going up and down. This may take a couple tries to time right.  You should hit
it when the clock says about 3.65.
4. Fast fall to the left and do an Up B that hits the target directly above
where you start. Land on the platform on top of the chute the target was in.
5. Dash jump to the left and immediately forward A the target to your left.
6,7. Without rejumping, forward B to the left to hit the next 2 targets.  It is
hard to make it over the flipper without hitting it, so you can rejump before
the forward B if you need to.
8. Fall inside the left section of the level with the 2 flippers in it.
Maneuver yourself between the 2 flippers and back A through the right wall from
above the lower flipper so you hit the target and immediately pop up a tiny
bit.  You will be able to fast fall down through the flipper you just hit and
continue down through the floor.
9,10. Fast fall through the floor and wavedash down-left onto the moving
platform.  Run off the left side of it and forward B to the left to hit the
last 2 targets.

y) Roy
-----------

Note: If you're having trouble hitting targets 1 and 2 and landing on the box,
you have to try adjusting your jumps.  Try short hopping the first jump or
holding only slightly forward before hitting the first target.  This will allow
you to be higher when you hit the first target, which makes it easier to hit
the second target and land above it.

1. Hold forward before the level starts.  Jump with X and forward B to get the
first target.
2. Rejump in the air to the right and do a forward A as you are going up to hit
the target in the first box.  Land above where it was and L cancel.
3,4. Move a bit to the right if you need to and right B the 2 targets in front
of you.
5. Double jump and Up B to the left so you hit the up and down target up there
and land on the tiny platform facing left.
6. Do a running jump to the left and wavedash down onto the platform to your
left.  Run and jump to the left and forward A the target in the air.
7. Fast fall as soon as you press A to hit target 6.  Rejump to the left and
forward A to hit target 7.
8. Continue holding left so you barely clear the top flipper and forward A
target 8.
9,10. Immediately after you hit target 8, fast fall.  As soon as you can, up B
to hit the last 2 targets.

7. Miscellaneous
---------------------
Here is a short list of the interesting/fun things to do while you are playing
Break the Targets.

1. When you press Z to restart the level, if you are holding L or R the level
will restart and the character's music from his or her level will be playing as
you play.

2. Jigglypuff, Falco, Link, Young Link, and Peach are the characters that can
actually die off the top of their BtT levels.

Jigglypuff - Ride one of the moving purple platforms to the left and jump up to
the top of the level.  Hold your shield until it breaks and you will pop up and
fly away.

Falco - Go to the left side of his level and stand on the top of the thin
vertical platform, below where target 10 is.  Do a running jump to the right,
double jump to the right, wall jump off the wall, and Up B straight up, along
that very high vertical wall.  At the top of the up B, hold right.  If you do
it right, you will die off the top of the level.

Link - Throw a few bombs at yourself until your damage is fairly high.  Then,
go to the highest point in the level.  Pull a bomb, then double jump and Up B
so the bomb explodes when you are at the highest point.  If your damage is high
enough, the explosion will send you off the top of the screen.

Young Link - Go up to the top right corner of the level at the highest point.
Just keep throwing bombs at yourself until you are at a high enough percentage
to throw a bomb down and be exploded off the top of the screen.

Peach - Just keep pressing down B until you get a bob-omb (a 1 in 300 chance).
When you finally get one, stand somewhere on the ground and throw it downwards
to hit yourself.  Pull another bomb.  This time, go up to the very top of the
level.  (If you go to the platform above the starting point, then double jump
and Up B you should barely make it.)  Smash throw the bomb up and then double
jump and Up B into it.  If you hit it high enough up, you will die off the top
of the screen.

3. Here's a glitch I discovered myself in Ganondorf's level.  Stand on the left
platform facing left.  Double jump and Up B into the small horizontal ceiling
above you.  Time it so as you hit it, a moving platform is passing below you.
The spikes will shoot you down towards the moving platform.  As you hit the
platform, hold right and press L to roll (called a "tech") to the right.  Time
it so you are still rolling as the platform brings you to the wall.  If you do
it correctly, you will go straight through the wall.  Once you recover from the
roll, you can jump up and jump back through the spikes back to the level, or
you will just die off the left/bottom of the level.  If you're going for the
record of 1.83 for dying off the left side of the level with him, do a tech to
the left instead of to the right.

strategies are for some of the best times in the world, and many people,
including me, have spent a lot of time working on them.  Don't just practice
for a couple minutes and then e-mail me or post on the GameFAQs boards saying
