Shadow originally appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, and at the end, he fell from
outer space due to wearing out his Super Form in the battle with BioLizard
(the prototype of the Ultimate Life Form). It was assumed that he had died,
but then he reappeared in Sonic Heroes.
There, he was sealed inside a capsule in one of Eggman's bases; and Rouge and
Omega set him free (Omega doing his part in a roundabout way). At the end of
the Dark Story, Rouge and Omega found a room full of Shadow clones on the Egg
Fleet. Rouge was depressed, thinking that the Shadow she found was a fake, but
then Omega said, "You know the thing about cloning... the original must exist
somewhere."
As Eggman revealed in this game, the Shadow in SA2, SH, SB (S-Battle), and ShTH
were all the same one (the original). After Shadow fell from space, Eggman sent
one of his robots to save him - he just lost his memories is all.
Also told in ShTH, is that Shadow was created by both Gerald Robotnik (who we
knew about before), and Black Doom. Doom helped Gerald with Project Shadow by
infusing him (Shadow) with his own blood, and in exchange, asked Gerald to one
day have Shadow give him the Chaos Emeralds. He wanted them so that, when the
Black Comet returned in fifty years, he could teleport it down to the surface
of the Earth.
At the very end of this game, Shadow looks out through a window on the ARK and
says, "Goodbye forever... Shadow the Hedgehog." Most likely, this is his way
of saying that he's moving on from the past.

Before Maria died on the ARK fifty years ago, she was a friend of Shadow, and
also she was Gerald's granddaughter. The moment prior to Shadow being ejected
from the Colony in an escape pod, she said the following as her dying words...
"Shadow... I beg of you... please, do it for me... for a better future... for
all the people who live on that planet... give them a chance to be happy. Let
them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason
that you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow, the Hedgehog."

Gerald was a scientist, and was both Eggman and Maria's grandfather. He lived
aboard the first Bernoulli space-colony named "ARK"; which, at the time of its
creation, was the most advanced research center of its kind. Not very many
people were aware, but Gerald and the others on the Colony were secretly
developing powerful weapons - among them, a laser with the capability to
decimate an entire planet; codenamed as, "The Eclipse Cannon".
He was developing that Cannon because of his meeting with Black Doom some time
prior. Back then, he was working on "Project Shadow" (a.k.a. the Ultimate Life
Form), but he needed help. So he asked Black Doom for his assistance, and Doom
agreed under a condition - that in the future, Shadow would give the seven
Chaos Emeralds to him. Gerald said he would, and so Doom used his blood to
bring Shadow the Hedgehog to life. What Gerald didn't know, was that Doom
wanted the Emeralds so that he could teleport the "Black Comet" down to Earth,
and eradicate the humans. So, in an attempt to lessen the effects of the
arrangement, Gerald began construction of the Eclipse Cannon. (He intended for
it to be used to obliterate the Comet).
But when GUN shut down the laboratory, and Maria died, Gerald went insane; she
was the only thing he had left to live for, and with her gone, his life was
meaningless. He made modifications to the Eclipse Cannon's programming, so that
if its power were ever boosted by all the Chaos Emeralds, it would begin a
descent towards Earth, and destroy the planet. He also installed a safeguard;
should anyone try to deactivate the program, the BioLizard - the prototype of
the Ultimate Life Form - would attach itself to the ARK, and override its
controls, thus making it impossible to alter its course.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman found Shadow sealed in cryo-stasis inside Prison
Island (a secret GUN base). He freed him, and in return, Shadow promised to
"grant him a wish"; to fulfill that wish, Shadow also said that Eggman had to
bring more Chaos Emeralds (he used one to unlock Shadow's imprisonment) to the
central control room on the Space Colony ARK.
When Eggman got to the ARK, Shadow told him of the Eclipse Cannon - a weapon
strong enough to tear a planet apart. But as it had been shut down for fifty
years, a large surge of energy was needed to reactivate it. That energy source
being the Chaos Emeralds.
At the end of that game, Shadow fell from outer space after fighting the
BioLizard. It was believed that he had died, however Eggman sent one of his
robots to save him. The reason that the Shadow in Sonic Heroes didn't remember
anything wasn't because he was a copy, but because he had lost most of his
memories due to the trauma he experienced.
Despite that, some of the paths through this game have Eggman telling Shadow
that he (Eggman) made him (Shadow). Most likely, Eggman was just attempting to
get Shadow to surrender and give up.
Here is the exact quote that Eggman says to Shadow nine minutes into his fight
with Devil Doom...
"Shadow... can you hear me...? This might be the last chance I have to speak to
you, so... What I said, about having created you... it was all a lie. Everyone
thought you died during that horrible incident... but I rescued you, with one
of my robots... You lost your memories, that's all... You really are the
Ultimate Life Form my grandfather created!"

Black Doom is the ruler of the Black Arms, and has three eyes; two that are
parallel and somewhat glazed over, and one other above them that is more
normal. He told Shadow to gather the seven Chaos Emeralds and bring them to
him; something which Shadow promised to do in the past.
That promise was made fifty years ago, when Black Doom helped Professor Gerald
create the Ultimate Life Form, "Shadow". Gerald was having difficulty with
Project Shadow, so he asked Black Doom for his aid. And in return, he requested
that the seven Chaos Emeralds to be brought to him by Shadow in the future. The
professor agreed, and Doom used his blood to bring Shadow to life.
His reason for asking for the Chaos Emeralds was so that he could teleport the
"Black Comet" - home of the Black Arms - down to the surface of the Earth (the
Comet isn't fast enough to enter into another planet's atmosphere, so he needed
to warp it directly).
Also, Black Doom has a floating eye - "Doom's Eye" - that he has follow Shadow.
It has the capability to project his transparent image, if he can't be at the
specific place in person.

The GUN Commander lived aboard the ARK fifty years ago, and knew Maria very
well, thinking of her as an older sister. When the ARK was destroyed, and she
was killed, he blamed Shadow for it; since if he hadn't have been created, the
ARK likely wouldn't have been "shut down". Even now after all this time, he
still hates Shadow deeply.
Ironically, it was GUN itself that killed Maria; when she was running away,
one of its troops shot her.

Sonic the Hedgehog - The main protagonist of the series, Sonic has a
carefree attitude, and loves beating up Eggman.
Miles "Tails" Prower - Tails, who got his nickname due to the two tails he
has, is an expert with anything mechanical.
Knuckles the Echidna - The guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles is easily
tricked, especially by Eggman.
Amy Rose - A hedgehog like Sonic, Amy is obsessed with getting him
to fall in love with her.
Rouge the Bat - A government spy and treasure hunter, Rouge has a sort
of rivalry with Knuckles.

* - Doom's Eye flies up to the cliff, then projects Black Doom's image from its

SHADOW: Huh? Who are you and how do you know I'm Shadow? And what are you

* - Shadow, atop a cliff, loads a clip into a gun. He looks over at the camera
and cocks the weapon.
On a motorbike, Shadow is riding through Westopolis. Black Hawks swoop down
from above as a large Black Arm throws a car at a couple of GUN troops -
it explodes. Shadow gets closer to the large Black Arm. He rams the
motorcycle into it, leaping away as it blows up.
Several GUN soldiers are firing at the aliens, as hundreds more pour out
from the vortex in the sky. One of the Black Arms lands on a car, then
throws another one away. The troops continue to fire on the aliens. Shadow
stands on a ledge, overlooking the chaos below. He uses Chaos Control to
teleport away.
A view of Shadow slowly walking through a forest comes on, before switching
to him in Westopolis, firing at the Black Arms.
Sonic, along with everyone else, run through Westopolis.
Shadow warps behind a few Black Arms, and kicks them away. Elsewhere, GUN
soldiers fire at a thick smoke from which Shadow emerges. Their gunshots
bounce off him as a dark aura surrounds him. He uses Chaos Blast to knock
them down.
Black Doom motions for the Black Arms to continue their assault.
In GUN's headquarters, the Commander also gives the signal for his troops.
And Eggman, in his base, orders his robots to move out.
Above the Earth, the ARK comes into view as its Eclipse Cannon charges up.
A GUN soldier tries to crawl away on the ground. Shadow stands over him -
his eyes reflecting the nearby flames as he trembles with rage.
Sonic, covered in dirt, collapses on the ground as Shadow stands behind
him. Shadow looks on ahead; activating Chaos Control, he flies at the
camera.
The "Shadow the Hedgehog" logo appears.

like to keep your name private ("anonymous"), or if you don't want any credit
