Modes
==============================================================================
Race Now
If you just want to do an old fashioned pick up your controller and
race, this is the option. Pick your driver and a track to race on after
you pass the "Race Now" mode.
-Players
If you got a friend or two or three with you, toggle the number
from 1 to 4. The 3 other controllers have to be plugged in if
you are to do 4 players.
-Difficulty
This affects the difficulty of the speed and your car. There are
four difficulties and they are; easy, medium, hard and extreme.
Custom is pretty much self-explainable.
-Race Length
The more percentage you tune up, the more laps you will go. If
you want to race in Sharpie 500 at Bristol and you want to go
around the track 500 miles (Bristol is a 0.5 mile track), crank
the percentage up to 100%. All the percentage does is affects
the number of laps you want to go around the track you want to
race on.
Pick your driver, you can also switch to another paint scheme from
the same driver by pressing Left/Right on the control pad or the left
analog stick.
Like stated above, pick your track and you can change the event from
night to day by pressing left/right on the control pad or the left
analog stick. However, few tracks don't have night track or day
At the track you picked to race on, you will be given some options
before you go real NASCAR racing with 42 other AI cars.
-Practice
There is an old saying - "Practice is the key to success."
I really believe that and it works out well here, even if you
are racing under EXTREME difficulty. Go around the track a few
laps to get the hang of it. If your car doesn't feel right, you
can always press START and change some few things in the Car
Setup option.
-Qualify
Turn in 2 good laps to get a good starting spot for the race.
Practice can help you out before you qualify.
-Happy Hour
This is another way of saying Practice, but this occur after you
qualify. Basically the same thing as Practice mode, but this is
your last practice before you go to race. Make sure you are
comfortable with your car and setups before you start your engine
for the big race.
-Race
Here it is, you and 42 other competitors will go real NASCAR
racin'! The winner gets to take home an awesome looking trophy
and a large check! That winner will be you if you got the car
to beat.
-Flags
Green - When the green flag drops, the race is on.
Yellow - The track is in its unsafe condition to race on (single
or multiple car wreck OR debris). If the yellow flag
drops, race back to the yellow. You are given an option
to go in the pit for little adjustment, 4 fresh tires
and fuel.
White - Final lap of the race make one more lap around to the
finish line.
Checkered - Race is over... until you go to the next track.
SpeedZone
This is for those who are new to NASCAR or the racing game. There are
four challenges for you to gain experience on and they are: Passing,
Drafting, Time Trials and Blocking.
-Passing
Learn how to pass the cars in front of you. Steer to the left or
right if the path is open to pass the car in front of you and
do the same for the rest of the cars in front of you. If you
happen to ram yourself into an AI car, your will lose some points.
There are 3 levels to pass this experience, the last one is Bristol,
which is a short and tight track.
-Drafting
A very simple experience to gain. What is drafting you ask?
Drafting is a way to gain interval between you and the next
car. The car in front of you will create an "air pocket" and if
you are in the car's air pocket, you will be "sucked" in closer
to the car, like a big vacuum. So, you need to get behind the car
in front of you and press R2 to draft with him.
Two cars are faster than one and you use LESS FUEL if you draft.
This feature can really help you out at superspeedway tracks like
Daytona and Talladega. If you want to "stretch" your fuel, drafting
is the most common key to do so.
-Time Trials
All of the levels in this challenge are on fantasy and official
NASCAR road courses. If you are a inexperienced road racer, the
challenge is here.
-Blocking
Its the final lap! You are the leader and you need to keep your
position by blocking the car behind you. Simply look at the
rear-view mirror or look at the arrow at the bottom of your
screen and try to position your car where the tip of the arrow
is to block.
Lightning Challenge
Lightning Challenge is your chance to prove you belong on the track. If
you can complete the challenges, you'll earn Thunder Plates which unlock
cars, tracks, and drivers.
Michael Waltrip, driver of the #15 NAPA Chevrolet, will be your
commentator for all of the challenges.
To find out what plates you can get from all of the challenges, look
under "Thunder Plates."
Thunder License
Get some experience behind the wheel as you learn every track in the
country from "The King," Richard Petty, and other top NASCAR drivers.
This is pretty much like the practice mode in "Race Now." Except that
you don't have an option to mess with your setups.
Season
You don't have to win every race to finish the season on top. Compete
consistently in a series of races in quest of a NASCAR championship and
you might end up with enough points to clutch the cup.
Career
Work your way through the ranks of NASCAR as you compete for 20
consecutive seasons. Vie for the best crew, try to sign the top sponsors,
and incorporate the latest racing technology.
If you want to be offered a good sponsor and money for your team, buy
new engines, chassis, body and your R&D (reseach and development)...
you need to race smarter and finish in a good position to do so. If
your starting and finishing position meets your sponsor's expectation,
your prestige will raise, and maybe you will be offered better money
and sponsorship.
==============================================================================
Tracks
==============================================================================
These are the tracks you can race on. Events are from the NASCAR Thunder 2003
for each tracks, and for the past winners, I got them from the "The Official
NASCAR 2003 Preview and Press Guide" and picked some drivers that have won at
the track and not listing all of them.
You may see a locked track when you are scrolling through the events. There
are two ways you can unlock them. Season or Race Now modes. In Race Now mode,
you must win the race (either day or night) under medium or higher
difficulty settings.
For The Shootout and The All-Star, the only way you can unlock them is if you
go through season mode and win both special events.

know, Alan won the championship in 1992 with Hooters as their sponsor and
this is 10 years after his death.

A native from South Boston, Virginia, the youngest Burton brothers,
rookie of the year in 1994, what else? Jeff Burton has proved himself
to be one of the best racers in the Winston Cup series. His first win
came in Texas in 1997, he finished 4th in point standings that year, until
the career best, 3rd, in 2000. Last year, Jeff did not win a race and that
isn't what he wanted to see but he finished 12th in point standings.

2002 Daytona 500 winner, Ward Burton, had an up-and-down season this year,

wasn't for those. A native from South Boston and an older brother to Jeff.
Ward's first win came in 1995 at The Rock (Rockingham) and he added 4
more after that. Look for Ward in a new team for the 2004 season as
he and Bill Davis terminated the contract for the #22.

The first NASCAR Thunder game doesn't have Ricky Craven, but he is in
the second one though! I'm sure the fans of Craven are very happy and will
be able to use him as their driver. A native from Maine joined PPI
Motorsports and the #32 car back in 2001, which is the year Ricky won his
first Winston Cup race in Martinsville. Ricky did not add any more win in
the 2002 season but finsihed 15th in standings with 3 top 5s and 9 top
10s.
In the 2003 season, the first half of the season, Ricky was having a
spectacular run and was inside the top 10 in points. He also had a
win at Darlington as what was to be the most memorable race and the
shortest margin from 2nd place of .002 second. Craven beat Busch by
an inch to the finish line after a wild few laps towards the end of
the race.

Taking over the seat for the late Dale Earnhardt, Harvick has proved
that he was the dominant rookie in the 2001 season with 2 wins (the 1st

season, Kevin Harvick was in a sophomore slump and finished 21st in
point standings, but at least he got a win.

One of the rookie candidates for the 2002 season, Jimmie Johnson has proved
himself a better racer than Gordon, just joking. Although, it surprised me
that Johnson got as high as 2nd place in standings and he is still hanging
in the top 5s in the point standings. As of the end of 2002 season, Jimmie
won 3 times with 6 top 5s and 21 top 10s and he ended up 5th in point

teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. and is always a threat at the plate race.

Hold 'em off (Rookie)
Subway 500
Martinsville Speedway
Kurt Busch
Johnny Benson was all over Kurt Busch's bumper in the closing laps
of the 2002 Martinsville race, but could not make the pass giving
Busch the win. Hold off Benson with 6 to go for the win.
[ ] Stay above 10th or better
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You have to play defense here at the short "paper clip" track. Johnny
Benson will be right on your back bumper and you have to keep him
behind you. If you can't hold him off for the first several laps, try
to finish in the top 10.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kissing the bricks (Rookie)
Brickyard 400
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Bill Elliott
Bill Elliott passed Rusty Wallace late in the 2002 Indianapolis race
and went onto win for the second straight week. With 2 to go, can
you get past Rusty and Matt Kenseth to win Indy?
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: You can try and press "R2" to draft with Rusty Wallace or Matt Kenseth
who are up in front of you on the back straightway. If you passed them
both on the 1st/2nd turn, then just have a nice and steady ride one more
time around the track. Try to brake frequently entering the 1st turn and
3rd turn from leaving the two long straightaways. If you do not brake
frequently, your car may skid out of track and you ending up not beating
this challenge.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chrome Horn (Rookie)
Sharpie 500
Bristol Motor Speedway
Jeff Gordon
During the final 3 laps of the 2002 Sharpie 500, Jeff Gordon bumped
his way past Rusty Wallace to take the lead. Once again, be agressive
to get by Rusty and win the race.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You got 3 laps left, so make your move and try to get Rusty Wallace
lose in the turns and drive under him to pass him. You may also battle
some lapped/about to be lapped cars, so try not to make a wrong move
like slowing down greatly which could cause Wallace to catch you and
may pass you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Out in clean air (Rookie)
Mountain Dew Southern 500
Darlington Raceway
Jeff Gordon
Jeff Gordon easily won the 2002 Darlington race with almost a 2
second leasd over Ryan Newman. Starting with a caution restart on
lap 238, take the lead by lap 240 to win the challenge.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You will start off on a double-file restart. Try to draft with Ryan
Newman on the first lap or if you are clear low and you are right on
Newman's bumper, you can drive down and go to the inside of him. Once
you get clear off him, run around the track one more time with the lead
lap cars behind you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every drop counts (Rookie)
Tropicana 400
Chicagoland Speedway
Kevin Harvick
A fuel mileage gamble during the final caution paid off by moving
Kevin Harvick up 8 spots on his way to a 2002 Tropicana 400 win.
Survive the final 3 laps and win without running out of fuel.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: I am not totally sure how old the tires are, but I seemed to be fine
that I beat the challenge. You will be driving as Kevin Harvick with
very low fuel and you will have to run around the Chicagoland track 3
times. I doubt you will be out of gas towards the last lap unless you
were using the gas a lot. Brake frequently when entering turn 1 and 3,
and since Chicagoland has a long and wide corners, you can step on the
accelerator after you slowed down entering the turns. Try to keep Jeff
Gordon and co. behind you as you go for the win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second time's a charm (Rookie)
UAW-GM Quality 500
Lowe's Motor Speedway
Jamie McMurray
Jamie McMurray made history by winning the 2002 Lowe's race and
became the quickest winner in the modern NASCAR era. Hold off
Bobby Labonte's charge with 2 laps to go to take the win again.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: This is one of the memorable races where Sterling Marlin was hurt and
Jamie McMurray was a substitute driver and Lowe's being his 2nd career
cup race and he won it. Bobby Labonte will be right on your tailgate
while you go around this track two times. Try to make 2 good quick laps
around the track while holding off B. Labonte and J. Gordon and give
Jamie his 2nd win. You may have trouble exiting Lowe's Turn 4 because
you will be on the gas coming out of the turn and the wall will be right
there to your right, so keep the steering wheel to the left as far as
you can to avoid making contact with the wall. If you make contact with
that Turn 4 wall, it could reduce your speed and Bobby Labonte will take
the win and not you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So close... (Rookie)
Dodge Save Mart 350
Infineon Raceway
Jerry Nadeau
Jerry Nadeau was in position to win the 2002 Infineon race when
the rear-end broke with 3 laps remaining. This time the car will
hold together. Hold off Ricky Rudd with one to go for the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Remember, Infineon is a road course track and you may be inexperienced
or have raced on this track the previous games. Every turns on this
tracks are dangerous, so you will be using the brake a lot and you
also will be jerking the wheel left and right. You have a huge lead,
plenty of time for you to make your way around each turn and you will
probably lose a lot of time at the last and VERY sharp turn of the track
before you cross the finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defending Champ (Rookie)
EA Sports 500
Talladega Superspeedway
Ryan Newman
Ryan Newman won the 2002 EA SPORTS NASCAR Thunder Challenge by
defeating Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. Adding Jeff Gordon to
the lineup you get 2 laps to defend his title.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You are driving as Ryan Newman, trying to eliminate the Chevrolets
from being the dominant car in restrictor-plate racing. Show Dodge
and your team that you can win this race. Drafting is the important
key here, or else you will have a hard time trying to catch the 1st
place car while going around the track 2 times.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do-Over (Rookie)
Pocono 500
Pocono Raceway
Ricky Rudd
For the second week in a row, Ricky Rudd blew a tire while leading
with only a few laps left. This time the tire will not blow and
Ricky will have to pass Jeff Burton with 2 laps left for the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: You may not have to worry about drafting if you are a skilled driver at
Pocono. However, this isn't a drafting game and try to dive down low and
get under J. Burton on the 1st turn of this track. If you successfully
pass him, maintain a good couple laps around the track. The only part
you may have trouble with is the 2nd corner of the track where the
outside wall is is where you may make contact with.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
41st to 1st (Rookie)
Daytona 500
Daytona International Speedway
Elliott Sadler
Elliott Sadler stayed calm after starting the 2002 Daytona 500
in 41st place and drafted his way to a 2nd place finish. With one
more lap can you get around Ward Burton for the win?
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 12th or better
Key: The AI cars are smarter in this version of game than last year's. At
superspeedway, you don't want to jerk your wheel hard or you'll lose
time and you may just spin off the track. Tilt your control stick steady
and try to take some draft off W. Burton and go up high to the right a
little bit and he will try to block you off to the right. Once you get
close enough to him on the right, jerk to the left (not too hard) and
get underneath him and pass him into turn 1 and 2 of this track. Keep
all of the competitors behind you while you give Elliott another win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eye on the prize
Ford 400
'02 Homestead-Miami Speedway
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart came from a lap down and secured the 2002 championship
with an 18th place finish in Miami. Jump out in front of the leaders
on the restart and get Tony's lap back by lap 227.
[ ] Stay on lead lap
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 25th or better
Key: You will be racing on the 2002 Homestead track, the flat one. Tony
Stewart was a lap down and somehow he managed to get on the lead lap
and won the championship after the race. You will be piloting the #20
Home Depot Chevrolet at the restart, but a lap down. Try to get on the
lead lap by passing the first lapped car in front of you and the leader
at the 1st and 2nd turn. Since the 2002 Homestead is a flat track, brake
easily into the corners and you can accelerate coming out of the corners.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope, it's my turn
Pepsi 400
Daytona International Speedway
Michael Waltrip
Michael Waltrip won the 2002 Pepsi 400 under caution after Dale
Earnhardt Jr. could not find drafting help to pass him. This time
the race will finish under green and Jr. will have some help.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: Get in front of Dale Earnhardt Jr. who is in the red #8 car to your
right. Make sure he is behind you (it doesn't HAVE to be him) and have
him help you draft one time around this track to the finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eight tires are better than 4
Carolina Dodge Dealers 400
Darlington Raceway
Ricky Craven
In a spectacular finish, Ricky Craven beat Kurt Busch by mere inches
to win the 2003 Darlington race. It's the last lap and you will have
to make the pass on Busch to get the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: With one lap to go, you will be able to catch Kurt Busch on the back
straightway or before you cross the finish line. Try to make a good
speed around the 1st and 2nd turn of the track and if you are able to
track down Kurt Busch on the back straightway, you will have no problem
passing him to win the race.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Texas 2-step
Texas Motor Speedway
Ricky Rudd
Luck was on Ricky Rudd's side as he managed to avoid countless
wrecks in the 2003 Texas race. Get Rudd through one more with
no damage to pass the challenge.
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No car damage
[ ] Stay above 30th or better
Key: You will be around the wide 3rd and 4th turn of the track. The wreck
will occur in front of you and you can slow down and look for a clear
spot to go through. Sometimes that clear spot isn't too clear because
there are other cars around you and you have to beat this challenge
without ahy damage on your car. Don't try to slam on your brake too
hard, because if there is a car behind you, he could collide into the
back of you. Try to finish 30th or higher to beat this challenge.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rain or Shine, I'll take it (Veteran)
Daytona 500
Daytona International Speedway
Michael Waltrip
With the help of teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Waltrip
went on to win his second Daytona 500. With Dale's help, let's
see if you can pull away from the pack and win the race.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: Get in front of your teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. who is driving the
red #8 car. Once you get him behind you, have him help you draft
around the track until you get to the finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Segment One (Veteran)
The All-Star
Lowe's Motor Speedway
Jeff Burton
Jeff Burton's strategy of pitting on the last lap almost got him
the win in the All-Star race at Lowe's. This time Burton pitted
with the rest of the field and is in 4th with 3 laps to go. Get
Burton the win!
[ ] Stay above 14th or better
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You will be using draft more in veteran difficulty than you did in
rookie difficulty. You do not have to pit in this challenge as to
what happened with J. Burton in the real race. You have to catch draft
from either Bill Elliott or Jimmie Johnson who are in front of you
if you pass Jeremy Mayfield in the first or second turn of the track.
So, this is more like a drafting challenge than anything else.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, but I can go Thirty-EIGHT (Veteran)
Subway 400
Talladega Superspeedway
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. went 38 laps on a single fuel load to win the
2002 EA SPORTS 500. With the lead and low fuel, block and lift to
stretch your fuel 3 more laps to win the race.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: Another one of these superspeedway and drafting challenge. The only
difference is the speed of the AI from the rookie challenges. Keep
the competitors behind you and have one of them help you draft to the
finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time to go? (Veteran)
SIRIUS at the Glen
Watkins Glen International
Robby Gordon
A slow restart by Ryan Newman made it impossible for Robby Gordon
to catch Tony Stewart for the 2002 Watkins Glen race win. Restarting
in third, get past Stewart and Newman for the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 13th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: The only good key I can give you is to turn in good time at all of the
turns. Braking frequently before each turn really brought me closer
and closer to the leader, that is if you successfully pass the 2nd
place car at the 1st turn of the track or the uphill "S" turns after
the 1st turn. The only tough part of the track to get through is
probably the 4 turns after the straightway.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slicing and Dicing (Veteran)
Sharpie 500
Bristol Motor Speedway
Kevin Harvick
Kevin Harvick made it through a huge pile-up untouched when
Robby Gordon and Jimmie Johnson got together. Maneuver the #29
Chevrolet through the wreck with no damage.
[ ] No car damage
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] Stay above 12th or better
Key: Remember, this is much like the Ricky Rudd and Texas challenge in the
rookie diffculty. The difference is that this is under veteran
difficulty, the AI cars has a little more speed with it and you are
on a short track. Short track meaning no room to go around and a LITTLE
tap to another car or the wall will fail you. When it gets to go green,
slow down, because the wreck will occur in front of you and somehow I
managed to go through the outside through the traffic and ended up 6th.
Look for any opening and gun through it and try to go easy around the
Bristol track, because if you scrape the wall, you will fail this
challenge.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A green win (Veteran)
Virginia 500
Martinsville Speedway
Bobby Labonte
On lap 499 of the 2002 Virginia 500, two cars spun and Bobby
Labonte won under caution. This time no cars will spin. Hold
off teammate Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth for the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You will be racing on a flat short track, so that means you will
have to take it slow around the corners. Not that slow, but enough
for you to steer along the bottom line and step on the accelerator
out of the turns. You will do this for at least 4 laps and keep
the other competitors behind you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worst to first (Veteran)
Carolina Dodge Dealers 400
Darlington Raceway
Sterling Marlin
A pre-race engine change and a 43rd starting spot could not keep
Sterling Marlin from winning the 2002 Darlington race. Go from
43rd to 35th in 4 laps to start your charge to the front.
[ ] Finish 35th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Darlington is an irregular racetrack as one end of the track is
smaller than the other. The smaller side of the track will get you
to use the brake a little more than the long side. Using another
car's draft is the key to get to 35th position or better for this
challenge and also good time around both ends of the track.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spin Cycle (Veteran)
Michigan 400
Michigan International Speedway
Dale Jarrett
Dale Jarrett overcame a spin on lap 11 in the 2002 Michigan race
for his 30th career win. Starting 11th, stay on the lead lap after
a spin in turn 4, and make it to to 32nd within 3 laps.
[ ] Finish 32nd or better
[ ] Stay on lead lap
Key: This has got to be the toughest challenge under veteran difficulty.
You will be driving in the #88 UPS Ford and you will be expected to
spin automatically around the front straightway. You can either let
the car spin until it stops and gas yourself to the line or try to
gain control of the car from spinning and go to the line.
You have an option to pit or not to pit. If you refuse, you will have
a hard time getting control of your car around the turns. I would pit
if I was you and get 4 new fresh tires. Once the green flag drops,
catch the draft from another car and go around the turns as smooth and
carry as much speed as you can. Once in the while there will be a
minor accident by one of the AI cars halfway down the field and cause
10-15 other AI cars behind them to slow down and you will be easily
be able to pose a 25-32nd place finish.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Big Show (Veteran)
Daytona 500
Daytona International Speedway
Casey Mears
Casey Mears made it past Matt Kenseth just before the finish
line to make it into the biggest race of the year, the Daytona
500. With 2 laps left, can you make it into the Big Show?
[ ] Finish 15th or better
[ ] Stay above 25th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Drafting to a 15th place or better position is the key here. There is
not much else I can give you. Sometimes the cars ahead of you will try
to block you, but you can go up high and then jerk back down to the
low side and pass them on the inside. If you make a mistake at one part,
like hitting the wall slightly, don't fall back to 26th or worst.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slipping and Sliding (Veteran)
Subway 400
North Carolina Speedway
Dale Jarrett
Dale Jarrett and Kurt Busch fought hard on worn tires in the
closing laps of the 2003 Subway 400. Jarrett passed Busch twice
to get the win. You have 2 laps to make a pass on Busch for the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: The #88 Ford and the #97 Ford both got old tires, so you and that
car will be having a hard time to control the car. The only part you
will have a hard time is entering turn 1 and 3 with old tires on. Go
cautiously with some brake into those turns, if you just tap the brake
lightly, you'll go up hit and probably hit the wall. If you hit the
brake harder than you think, your car will just spin out of control
and you will most likely slide down the track and result you out of the
track. Go easy into the corners and keep the competition behind you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Excuse me, coming through (Veteran)
Bass Pro Shops/MBNA 500
Atlanta Motor Speedway
Bobby Labonte
After a slow start on the final caution restart Bobby Labonte
nudged Jeff Gordon out of the way to win the 2003 Atlanta race.
With 2 laps to go make the pass on Gordon to get the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: Catching draft from Jeff Gordon's car and getting a good first lap
is the key to get up to his rear bumper. He will probably try to
block you, so go to the right side and once he goes to the right, jerk
to the left and dive down low to the inside of him. Once you are inside
him, gun your car and head for the finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Texas Shootout
Samsung Radioshack 500
Texas Motor Speedway
Ryan Newman
Ryan Newman battled with Dale Earnhardt Jr., barely getting by
him for the win. Make the pass on Jr. once again to get the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
Key: The first two laps, you want to put in good lap time to be able to
get good draft off Dale Earnhardt Jr. and catch him. On the final
lap, you can play a passing game on him whether you go low or high,
go for the finish him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run with the big dogs (Legend)
Georgia 500
Atlanta Motor Speedway
Greg Biffle
Greg Biffle notched a top five finish in Saturday's race at
Atlanta Motor Speedway. Let's see if you can get the win from
5th place with 4 laps to go against the big dogs on Sunday.
[ ] Stay above 15th or better
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: You will be racing on the fastest track, Atlanta. You will also be
racing under legend difficulty and that means the speed will be
cranked up from the veteran difficulty. Braking easily before entering
the wide turn 1 and 3 of the track will give you good speed to step on
the gas coming out of turn 2 and 4. Drafting will also help you here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New England 5 (Legend)
New England 300
New Hampshire International Speedway
Ward Burton
After a huge win in Daytona, Ward Burton won his second race of
the season in the New Enland 300. Starting 3rd, you will only have
2 laps to repeat Ward Burton's win.
[ ] Stay above 13th or better
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: New Hampshire is another one of those flat tracks and that means you'll
have to use the brake a little more than you used at banked tracks.
You may think that the two cars ahead of you are too far away, but you
can gain a lot of time going in and if you can step on the gas early
coming out of turn 2 and 4, you'll have no problem winning this race.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If only... (Legend)
Carolina Dodge Dealers 400
Darlington Raceway
Ricky Craven
Polesitter Ricky Craven's hopes of winning the 2002 Darlington
race were spoiled by an early wreck. This time Ricky will have
made it through the crash. Get the win from 5th with 5 laps to
go.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 15th or better
Key: Darlington is nicknamed "Too Tough To Tame" because of the irregular
track shape. One side of the track is shorter in length than the
other side but both of the straightways are about the same in length.
At the short end of the track is where you will use your brake a little
more. The long side of the track is not all that difficult to get
through, but if you carry big speed around it, watch out for the outside
wall because it will be right there when you exit out of turn 2. If
you hit that wall, you will get a "Darlington Stripe," a famous term
for those who hit that wall and give it a black stripe.

If I just had a few more laps (Legend)
Chevy Rock N Roll 400
Richmond International Raceway
Jeff Green
Jeff Green finished the 2002 Richmond race in 3rd, but thought
he could have won with a few more laps. With 4 laps to go, get
around Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth to get him the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 13th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Richmond is a short track and has little banks in the turns. Brake early
before entering turn 1 and 3 and as your car float around the bottom,
gun it out of turn 2 and 4. If you keep doing this, you will be able to
catch Newman's draft on the 3rd or 2nd to last lap. The margin between
1st and 2nd is short enough for you to pass both cars on one lap.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smoke Screen (Legend)
Pepsi 400
Daytona International Speedway
Jeremy Mayfield
Jeremy Mayfield survived a 14 car wreck triggered by Dale Jarrett
and Jeff Burton during the 2002 Pepsi 400. Like Jeremy, get through
the wreck with no damage to complete the challenge.
[ ] No car damage
[ ] Stay above 17th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
Key: Like the "avoid-the-wreck" challenge in rookie and veteran, get through
the pile with no damage to your car. You will be racing on Daytona and
of course, you will be going at high speed. The wreck will occur at
Turn 1 of the track. Slow down and follow the undamaged car in front of
you and draft with him to the finish line.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who needs tires? (Legend)
Food City 500
Dover International Speedway
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson stayed out during the final caution of the Dover
race and went on to win on worn tires. The lead lap cars have
pitted, so you will need to hold off Bill Elliott with worn tires
to get the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Old tires means less control of your car. The rear end of your car will
most likely try to drift itself up the track. Go on the throttle early
and gun out of turn 2 and 4 as quick as you can. You will have to brake
easily into turn 1 and 3 because of the tires and remember to keep the
competition behind you because they got fresh tires.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm staying out (Legend)
Dodge Save Mart 350
Infineon Raceway
Terry Labonte
Terry Labonte's decision to finish the 2002 Infineon race on
worn tires scored him a 3rd place finish. It's the final lap!
You're on worn tires and will need to at least finish in 3rd
place.
[ ] Finish 3rd or better
[ ] Stay above 13th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: This has to be the easiest Legend challenge, even on worn tires if
you are a skilled road racer. It is very hard to pass on road courses
because of multiple turns and narrow road. The only time you can pass
is if you have a fast car and you see a gap that you can dive into.
Anyway, you are on the restart and you'll be in first position, try
to take it slow around the track and don't worry about the competitors
behind you, as long as you shut the door on the INSIDE part of the
corner, they won't be able to pass you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aero Push! (Legend)
MBNA Armed Force Family 400
Dover International Speedway
Mark Martin
Mark Martin challenged for the lead with 5 laps to go, but due
to poor handling he could not make the pass. The problem is fixed
and you have the chance to get the win as you approach lap traffic.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 11th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: By the way, I was at this race at the exit of 4th turn. Anyway, Jimmie
Johnson is your leader and you are racing as Mark Martin. You will be
facing some lapped cars, but as long as you turn in 3 good laps to get
rid of the lapped cars and you are on the #48's rear bumper, you are
good to make a move on the last lap. Brake easily into turn 1 and 3,
but the corners are wide enough for you to get back on gas as soon
as you can to chase down the leader.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing to show for it (Legend)
Ford 400
'02 Homestead-Miami Speedway
Joe Nemechek
Joe Nemechek dominated the 2002 Ford 400, but a slow pitstop
caused him to lose valuable spots and he wound up finishing
second. Here's another chance at the win, starting in 9th with
6 laps to go.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 19th or better
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Let me give you one hint, you don't have to stay on track. Good thing
it said that because the 2002 Homestead track is so flat that it
requires some brake to get around the tight corners. You are able to
drive down under the white line (along the grass) and gun for 1st
position. Remember, you are starting 9th and you'll have to go
around the track 5 times, plenty of time for you to chase down and
catch the leader.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One more chance (Legend)
Chevy Rock N Roll 400
Richmond International Raceway
Steve Park
Steve Park picked up 27 positions by the end of the 2002 Richmond
race, but thinks he could win it if given another shot at it.
Starting 8th with 5 laps to go, take Steve's cornering advice and
get the win.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 18th or better
Key: Exactly like the one for Jeff Green in this challenge. The only
difference is that you will start 8th and you get 5 laps around this
track. Go around Richmond's semi-banked corners as smooth as you can
and then get on the throttle as early as possible to catch down the
cars in front of you. You will also need to brake early before
entering these turns, but not too hard.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot for a win (Legend)
Checker Auto Parts 500
Phoenix International Raceway
Rusty Wallace
Rusty Wallace nearly kept his winning streak alive in the 2002
Phoenix race. He came up a bit short finishing 2nd to Matt Kenseth.
Move up from 3rd to 1st with 4 laps to go to keep it alive.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 13th or better
Key: Phoenix is also a flat track, but it doesn't require as much brake
as you needed for the other flat track you've raced on. Catch some
draft from the 2nd place car in front of you to gain some ground
on him and the leader on the first 2 or 3 laps. You may be able to
pass into 2nd position on one of the early laps. Go easy into the
corners and just step on the gas as soon as possible and you won't
have to worry about hitting into the wall because of Phoenix's
tri-oval track.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Rock
Pop Secret 400
North Carolina Speedway
Mike Skinner
Mike Skinner had a strong car all day in the 2002 North Carolina
race, but fell just short of a top 5 finish. We're going to give
you 5 more laps to see if you can earn him a trip to victory lane.
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 15th or better
Key: Rockingham is not a friendly track at all. Turn 1 of the track is
probably the only turn where you will have the most trouble on.
That turn is the sharpest on the track and you will have to slow
down or use the brake softly before entering the turn to have a nice
smooth ride around turn 1 and 2. Do this at least 4 more laps and
you will have no problem catching the leader and maybe you could grab
1st place on the 3rd lap and go around 2 more times to the finish
line!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's about time
Pop Secret 400
North Carolina Speedway
Johnny Benson
With low fuel and worn tires, Johnny Benson edged out his old
teammate for his first win in 226 starts. Conserve tires and
fuel in order to have enough to hold off Mark Martin for the
win.
[ ] Stay above 10th or better
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Many people seems to be having problem conserving fuel for challenges
like this one. To conserve fuel, let go off the gas EARLY and try not
to use the brake entering the corner because of worn tires. With
old tires on, you will have trouble controlling the car in the turns.
Yes, this is the hardest challenge yet, but don't use brake or else
you will wear out your tires some more, so let go off the gas into
the turns and punch it after you leave Turn 2 and 4, this way you
will be able to conserve fuel and save tires.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On second thought...
Pepsi 400
Daytona International Speedway
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. got out of line to pass Michael Waltrip and
was hung out to dry, a decision he regretted. This time, do
whatever it takes to get DEI a 1-2 finish. Any order will win
the challenge.
[ ] Finish 2nd or better
[ ] Ally Must Finish 2nd or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay above 10th or better
Key: It is all about drafting here at Daytona. The track is long and wide
enough to do a lot of drafting. The important thing is you have to
keep Michael Waltrip #15 in front of you and help him draft to the
finish OR have him behind you and draft you to the finish. It doesn't
matter if you win or lose, its a DEI 1-2 finish. Just as long as #8
and #15 are in the top 2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 new Eagles
SIRIUS 400
Michigan International Speedway
Dale Jarrett
Even with four fresh tires, Dale Jarrett lost the battle for the
win with Matt Kenseth in the 2002 Michigan race. Can you fight
through the pack from 10th to get Jarrett the win with 5 laps to
go?
[ ] Finish 1st
[ ] Stay above 19th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
Key: Michigan is another one of those track where you'll have to use some
of the draft to bring yourself to the front. Michigan's 1st and 3rd
turn requires one little tap on your brake to be able to get around
the corners without losing control or drifting up the track.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lapper
Chevy Rock N Roll 400
Richmond International Raceway
Matt Kenseth
At one point Matt Kenseth was 2 laps down, but still pushed hard
to win his fourth race of 2002 in Richmond. Stay on the lead lap
before the caution drops and finish 25th in 3 laps to win the
challenge.
[ ] Finish 25th or better
[ ] Stay above 30th or better
[ ] Stay on the track
[ ] No reckless driving
[ ] Stay on lead lap
Key: You'll have to beat 2 challenges in this one. One is to get your lap
back by passing the nearest car in front of you and stay on the lead
lap until a caution comes out. After the caution, you can pit or not,
it doesn't matter because you were the last car on the lead lap and
even if you pit, you'll still be the last car. When the green flag
drops, go around the track 3 times and try to finish 25th or higher
to beat this challenge.

Thunder Plates
==============================================================================
You can get at least 2 or 1 card from completing a Lightning Challenge in
Race Modes option. Just pick a challenge and accomplish it to get a card or
two, and it can be a Legend driver, Busch driver, Sponsor, or Paint Scheme.
If you go in the Race Now mode and when you go pick a driver, tilt your
control stick to the left or right and you'll see that there are other
paintjobs you can race with, some has the Muppets or the Looney Tunes on
them. Half of the paintjobs on there are locked and the only way to get them
is if you win at a track with a driver (say like.. Ryan Newman) and you will
get a new paintjob (it can be his 2003 Sony/Wega scheme or something else).
One thing is that you can't win at the same track with the same driver or
else you won't get a new paintjob, but YOU CAN go to the same track at a
DIFFERENT TIME (Bristol day and night, etc.) and this has to be done under
MEDIUM, HARD, and EXTREME difficulty.

You also get a Thunder Plate from beating a challenge in Thunder Challenges
under Race Modes. You _MAY_ get these Thunder Plate in order:
