  III. 1. General.

Raiden is one of the most popular characters in the Mortal Kombat
Universe and also one of the original seven characters in the first MK game
released in the year 1992. Raiden, who is also known as Earth's God of
Thunder, has appeared in Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat
Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat
Gold, and Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.

"The name Raiden is actually that of a deity known as the Thunder God..."

  III. 2. Story.

Here is a summary of what is known about Raiden as described in the MK games
so far:

Millennia ago, one of the Elder Gods known as Shinnok, led by
greed for power, decided that capturing the then young Earth realm would be a
key to achieving his goal. The remaining Elder Gods then assigned the God
of Thunder Raiden the responsibility to protect Earth realm from Shinnok.
The two powerful beings engaged in a long war, which was so destructive that
it erased an entire civilization from the face of Earth. At the end, however,
the Thunder God Raiden emerged victorious and banished the Fallen Elder
God Shinnok in a place called the Netherealm. Raiden took possession of
Shinnok's sacred amulet and hid it in the Shao Lin temple in the mountains
of China. Four elementals protected the amulet, for if it was to ever come
in Shinnok's possession again, he would regain his powers and be able
to free himself from the confines of the Netherealm.

Thousands of years later Shinnok, who was now the ruler of the
Netherealm, made an agreement with the sorcerer Quan Chi. If Quan Chi
could retrieve Shinnok's amulet for him, Shinnok would escape from
his prison and the two would then defeat the Elder Gods and reign
supreme over all realms. Quan Chi then enlisted the services of both
Scorpion and Sub-Zero, who unknown to each other were both sent to
retrieve the sacred amulet from the Shao Lin temple where it had been
hidden for thousands of years and protected by the Gods of Earth, Fire,
Water, and Wind. When the two assassins met, they engaged in a
ferocious battle which Sub-Zero won and Scorpion lost his life in.
Sub-Zero then proceeded to defeat all four guardians of the sacred
amulet and bring it back to Quan Chi. Quan Chi, in his turn, on
receiving the amulet immediately teleported himself to the
Netherealm and delivered the sacred amulet to the Fallen Elder God
Shinnok.

Raiden then appeared before Sub-Zero and explained to him that if
Shinnok was allowed to have the amulet, grave danger threatened Earth
realm. The God of Thunder then sent Sub-Zero to the Netherealm in order
to retrieve the amulet. After escaping from the Prison of Souls, Sub-
Zero was then able to cross the Bridge of Immortality, enter Shinnok's
fortress and after defeating both Quan Chi and Shinnok, he managed
to return the amulet back to Raiden.

Next, we find Raiden competing in the MK tournament that took place
in the first Mortal Kombat game. "It is rumored he received a personal
invitation from Shang Tsung himself and took the form of a human to
compete in the tournament." After the Earth warrior Liu Kang defeated
Shang Tsung to win the tournament, the Emperor of Outworld Shao Khan
invited Earth's warriors to compete in another tournament which would
take place in Outworld and there they would have to compete against
the evil Emperor himself. On learning about this, Raiden traveled to
Outworld to participate in that tournament. That tournament, however,
was apparently a diversion devised by Shao Khan in order to distract
Earth's warrior's attention from his real plan, which was to resurrect
his long dead wife Sindel on Earth realm thus giving him right to
stake claim on Earth and make it a part of Outworld itself.

That led to the occupation of our realm by Shao Khan's forces and
thus to the next Mortal Kombat tournament. Due to the fact that Earth
was no longer Earth but a part of Outworld, Raiden was not able to
compete in that tournament as he was the Protector of Earth and thus
had no jurisdiction, so to speak, over the new realm. He was,
however, able to protect the souls of Earth's chosen warriors so
that they could protect Earth from this invasion.

Although Raiden did not compete in that Mortal Kombat tournament, he had
a major role in the next one. Some time after Shao Khan was defeated at
the hands of Earth’s warriors, Quan Chi was successful in delivering to
Shinnok his sacred amulet. With its help the Fallen Elder God managed to
escape from the Netherealm and he and Quan Chi waged a war on the Elder
Gods. The Thunder God Raiden along with a number of chosen Earth warriors
came to the aid of the Elder Gods. The war between the two Gods was to be
fought again. And yet again, Raiden was victorious. Shinnok and Quan Chi
were defeated. After thousands of years of protecting the Earth realm from
the Forces of Evil, Raiden had earned a place among the Elder Gods. Upon
his entry into the pantheon of Elder Gods, Raiden chose the God of Wind
Fujin to be his successor as Protector of Earth. Quan Chi, on the other
hand, had quite a different fate. He, along with Scorpion, ended up in the
Netherealm where he was constantly harassed by the specter who had now
learned the truth about the death of his family and clan.

Several years later Quan Chi, with the help of two Netherealm demons
(Onis) and Shinnok’s amulet, managed to escape from his confinement.
After escaping, he forged an alliance with one of Earth realm’s deadliest
foes, Shang Tsung, in an attempt to bring chaos to Outworld. After killing
both Liu Kang and Shao Khan, the deadly alliance set to revive the
undefeatable army of the long forgotten Dragon King. With its aid, they
hoped to achieve their twisted goals.

From the Pantheon of Elder Gods, Raiden observed all those events and he
at once saw the imminent danger Quan Chi and Shang Tsung posed to Earth
realm if they were not stopped. He tried to convince the rest of the
Elder Gods to intervene and stand up to this new threat, but his efforts
remained but a silent voice in their ears. Frustrated, Raiden relinquished
his status as an Elder God and returned to Earth as the God of Thunder
once again. There he gathered some of his old friends from the previous
Mortal Kombat tournaments and explained to them the dire situation Earth
realm was in should the deadly alliance succeeded in taking control over
Outworld. He directed the Earth warriors to meet him at Shang Tsung’s
island in the Forgotten Sea, the place where the tournament from the first
Mortal Kombat game took place. There, he appeared before them and they all
discussed a plan to prevent Shang Tsung and Quan Chi from taking control
of Outworld.

  “We must act now! We must stop this Deadly Alliance!”

After that, Raiden raised from the depths of the sea a Nethership and on
its board he transported Earth’s warriors to a Celestial Portal known
only to sorcerers and deities. By way of this portal, they were all
transported to Outworld, where they were to engage yet again in the ancient
tournament known as MORTAL KOMBAT.

 Nan Chuan
 ----------
“Nan Quan or the southern-style Chuan is widely practiced in south China.
It evolved during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and has many different
styles. Among the famous are the five major styles: the Hong-family,
Cat-family, Liu-family, Li-family, and Mo-family Chuan. Dozens of other
less-known ones include the five-ancestor Chuan and black tiger Chuan.

Nan Quan emphasizes squatting stances with a low center of gravity and
steady footwork. Its fist blows are forceful. It is characterized by
combinations of short moves with few jumps. Power is generated through
breathing and sound articulation. Because southern-style boxers keep their
elbows and arms stiff and strong, their movements are alive with combating
tricks.” (Credit: Chinavoc.com)

 Jujutsu
 ----------
A term used to refer to unarmed Japanese Combat. The style
is characterized by hand and foot strikes, throwing, joint-locks and ground
fighting.

| IV.  Strategies                                                          |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

   General Strategies
   -------------------
Raiden is a well balanced, all around character. He has a good number
of high and low attacks, powerful special moves, and finally he has the
quick and long reaching attacks in his Staff stance. Anytime I am in trouble
I switch to Staff stance and go for his special followed by one of three
things: his special again, the 3-hits (B, B, B) combo, or the 4-hits combo
(B, B, Bk + Y). The advantage of his special is two fold: one it has a
long reach, approximately half the screen, and two it hits for a low and
then a high attack which makes it really hard to block. One advantage of the
above mentioned tactic is that the possibility of following with one out
of three possible ways keeps the opponent guessing and therefore increases
its efficiency.

   Versus the CPU
   ---------------
Here is a few tactics that I’ve found useful when playing against the CPU:

  -- always follow a Shocker (Fwd + Fwd + X) with a Lightning Bolt (Down +
Back + X). For some reason, the computer controlled character almost always
seems to perform a jump right after being hit by the Shocker. Even if they
do not jump though they will either not block or do something else which
in about every 8 out of 10 times will allow you to hit them with the
Lightning Bolt for extra damage. In the worst case scenario they will block,
in which case you win again since a Bolt will keep them at a distance and
will allow you to plan for your next attack with the opponent far away. An
exception to that rule occurs when playing against Sub-Zero as he will often
freeze after being hit by the Shocker, in which case if you perform a
Lightning Bolt you will get frozen and despite the fact Sub-Zero got hit,
that'll still leave him enough time to get close enough for a hit

  -- a Lightning Dash (Fwd + Fwd + B) rarely works against the computer.
The only few instances in which it does work is at the beginning of the
round if executed as the first hit or if you can intercept the enemy in
mid air or as the last hit in a combo. That's pretty much it. Oh and there
is one more instance I believe. If you manage to side step an opponent's
attack and perform the Lightning Dash quickly, it will also work. Other
than that though I'll advise being really careful with that move since if
you get caught trying to perform it by a blocking opponent, it leaves open
to any attack the enemy pleases or even worse, a combo.

   Beating Moloch
   ---------------
Beating Moloch using the above mentioned strategy, i.e. special
followed by either his special again, the 3-hits combo or the 4-hits combo,
is a piece of cake. An added advantage to this is that you can start it off
from a long distance thereby avoiding the risk of being caught in the
middle of the combo and destroyed by that evil beast. The only thing you
really need to watch out for is that quick punch with his chain ball right
after you complete a combo. The best way to do that is to press and hold
on Down or Up on your D-Pad right after you complete a combo, that way
you'll avoid his counter attack. After that just repeat the above tactic
until Moloch is defeated. With a little practice the Sub Boss will be no
threat to you.

| VI.  Combos                                                              |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  VI. 1. General Information.

The combo system in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is simply a joy to
behold. It is challenging, yet intuitive and addictive enough as to be one
of the best aspects of that great game. In short, it's simply so much fun.
In addition, MKDA's combo system is easily the best one in the series so
far, keeping in mind that MK1 and MK2 had no combo system per se, all
"combos" in those two games consisted of a series of quick juggles and
were entirely player defined. MK3's and MK4's combos systems were, ..
let's just say not that good.

  VI. 2. What is a Combo?

For the purposes of this FAQ, a combo is defined as an uninterrupted
series of attacks possessing the following properties:

     -- the series consists of more than two (2) attacks;
     -- the series of uninterrupted attacks is complete, i.e. it can not
        be followed by another attack without interrupting the sequence;

Exceptions to the following rule are the developer-defined combos, i.e.
the predefined combos, which could consist of two attacks only or could
be followed by another attack and the new sequence would still constitute
an uninterrupted chain. An example is the X, X, Bk + Y combo in the Nan
Chuan style which could be continued with another attack (ex.: Fwd + Y),
or the Y, A combo in the same style which consists of two attacks only.

  VI. 3. Abbreviations.

Here is a quick explanation of the abbreviations used in the
following three tables:

      N   - stands for Normal, meaning that at the point you start the
combo you are at such a distance from the wall that none of the attacks in

the combo being executed will result in the opponent coming into a contact
with the wall;
      CW  - stands for Close to a Wall, meaning that the distance between
the fighters and the wall is such that the last and the last hit only
will result in your opponent hitting the wall;
      AW  - Against a Wall, meaning that at the start of the combo your
opponent's back is against the wall;
      Bk  - Back, that means pressing Back or Away on the D-Pad on your
controller;
      F   - Forward, means pressing Forward or Towards on your

controller's D-Pad;
      U   - Up, means pressing Up on your controller's D-Pad;
      D   - Down, means pressing Down on your controller's D-Pad;
      FF  - Forward + Forward, stands for pressing Forward twice on
your controller's D-Pad;
      UF  - Up + Forward, stands for pressing Up and Forward;
      BB  - Black Button, refers to the small black button on the X-Box
Controller that's used for the character's special move. (Note:
see the table below for what buttons on the PS2 and GameCube controller
correspond to BB);
      SC  - Style Change, stands for pressing the L (left trigger)
button on the X-Box controller;

Note: Aside from the predefined combos, all of the above ones were found
out by me. In addition, all of the combos in this FAQ have been tested a
minimum of 2 times, most of them much more than that.

Note: In order to perform a combo successfully start in the fighting
style that's above the table the combo is in.

As you can see, the primary focus of this FAQ is Raiden's combos. The
reason why is because that's one of my favorite parts of the game and it
really lends itself to creativity. I have 84 combos so far, but I'll have
more as soon as I find them out.

Raiden can be unlocked by purchasing the XG coffin in the Krypt Mode
for 3116 Jade Koins.

Raiden's Fatality is B, F, F, F, A. This combination must be performed in a
close distance to the defeated opponent.
