1. Introduction:
================
Welcome to the official Mega Man Network guide for Mega Man Battle & Chase, Mega Man's
first foray into the racing genre of games. Refer to the index above for an easy
reference guide, and go to http://megaman.retrofaction.com/mmc/guides/ to find guides
for all of the other games in the Classic Mega Man series. Happy gaming.

====================
2. Mode Explanation:
====================
There are three different modes in Mega Man Battle & Chase, each of which feature a
different aspect of the racing title. Here's an easy reference guide for all features
in each pat

- Grand Prix Mode: This is the main mode of play. Select this and the options "New Game"
and "Continue" appear. Naturally, if you want to continue a previously saved game, you
choose Continue. In New Mode, you are then presented with the following screens.
+ Driver Selection - You have to select a driver to control through the game.
+ Enter Name - As soon as you've selected your driver, you're taken to this screen
where you can enter a custom name.
+ Course Selection - You can now select your home course.
+ Settings - If you have extra parts you'd like to swap out, you can do that here.
+ The Race - Here the race will begin.
+ Swapping Parts - If you win, you'll receive a vehicle part from another opponent
(either engine, wing, or tire). You can then use these new parts on your car to
build performance. Once you've obtained all the other three parts from a particular
racer, you can then try to win their body part.

There are a total of 44 parts to win, so try to get them all and build your own
custom car. Once you've won every race, Wily shows up and steals your prize money.
Go on to the final races to challenge Bass and the mad scientist himself. Once you
"beat" the game, you can begin unlocking the various other difficulty modes of the
  game.

- Versus Mode: When you select this mode, you have two options (Vs. Human) or (Vs.
Computer). The first one indicates a two-player game, and the second is pretty self-
explanatory. After this, you'll choose your racers and start off. In this mode, you
can select Wily as a racer (once you've beaten the Grand Prix), or choose from the Sky
Circuit courses. You can then choose from various enemies that will appear during the
race, and then start off. Once you've completed the race, you get a couple of options
 ranging from Re-try to Quit.

- Time Attack Mode: In this mode, you are racing to set and beat your speed records.
In this mode, only Power Nitros appear as special items. You can save your game after
every race, and go back again and again to try and beat your time.
Your Record Times are saved separately for this mode and the Grand Prix mode. You can
access each records individually in the Options menu.

MISCELLANEOUS RACING COMPETITORS

4-Roader
He takes part in just about every race, but has never won. Perhaps his record would be
better if he actually raced and stopped just trying to deter opponents...

Yellow Devil
Mega Man's second-to-next arch-nemesis is back to terrorize him on the tracks. He has a
powerful car which will ram into other racers trying to make them skid.

Track Joe
This bother has just gotten his drivers license and makes it his goal to cause mayhem on
the race tracks! Watch out for the bombs he tosses around!

=======================
5. Course Descriptions:
=======================
There are several race courses available in Mega Man Battle & Chase, all of which you
will find yourself racing on. Here's a quick summary of the different courses you'll
find yourself on during the game.

Street Course
-------------
Your basic course, this one features an urban environment transformed into a race course.
The difficulty level is very low here, so it's a great place to begin.

Mountain Course
---------------
This course mostly is comprised of cross-country roads that lead through a mountainous
area. The course has plenty of up and down areas and is quite wide. You'll still want to
be careful since the last part of the course is heavily mined.

Crystal Course
--------------
This cave is glistening with crystals on the cave walls. The course is also full of
overpasses and underpasses, and with the slick environment, you'll want to proceed with
caution here.

Sunset Course
-------------
In this course, you'll have to deal with oncoming traffic as you race around the twi-
light setting of this race area.

Toy Factory Course
------------------
This difficult track is full of switches that can change the environment around you, so
be careful as you fly through this toy factory race circuit.

South Pole Course
-----------------
This icy track is full of caverns that you can easily slip and fall in to, so proceed
cautiously while keeping up with the other racers on this slip'n'slide track.

Ridge Course
------------
This circuit is full of hilly mountain passes. The river present here
should be something avoided at all times.

Arms Factory Course
-------------------
A renovated arms factory is the setting for this race, and it's a tricky one at that.
This circuit is loaded with objects like conveyors that can knock your car off course.

City Course
-----------
This track is similar to the Street Course, but this time there are moving walls that
will change positions if shot at. Overall a bit tougher than the Street Course.

Sky Circuit 1-3 (only available in Versus Mode)
-----------------------------------------------
This entire track is suspended high in the sky, and it's completely made out of pavement
surface. The difficulty here is rather low, as it's not intended to be a main racing
track.

* Course (Wily's Course)
------------------------
As you might expect, this track is going to be tough. It's Wily's home turf now, and
this circuit is loaded with different types of surfaces you've faced throughout the game.
Keep in mind that Wily himself is a crazy driver, so you not only have to watch out for
the obstacles, but you have to watch out for ol' Albert himself!

=======================
6. Obstacles and Items:
=======================
During the actual race, you'll run across many obstacles in the path. You'll also find
a myriad of various items to use. Here's a brief rundown.

ROAD TYPES
----------
There's a lot more to this game than your racing skills. Your performance in any given
situation depends on the road conditions just like in real life driving. Here's a quick
summary of the road conditions encountered during the Battle & Chase races.

- Pavement - This surface makes up the majority of the Battle & Chase courses. It's
simple, easy to drive on, and tire-friendly.
- Gravel - A loose dirt type of surface. Most of the cars will have a slightly more
difficult time racing on this surface, but some types of tires that you can equip will
negate the slow-down effect on this surface.
- Acceleration Zones - These green flashing panels are your best friend in a race. By
hitting them, your speed is quickly boosted to 580-600 kmh for a short time.
- Deceleration Zones - The opposite of the above, these should be avoided at all times.
Hitting these will cause a major loss of speed.
- Ice - You won't lose speed while going over these sections, but nevertheless be careful
when traversing them as you can easily spin out while curving or taking corners.

Small Obstacles
---------------
The majority of obstacles other than road panels take the form of scattered enemies.
Learn to watch for them and you'll do fine. Here's an accompanying list followed by
points earned for taking them out.

- Metool (1 pt) - These little guys wander around the course. Try to run over them
 whenever possible.
- P-Cone (1 pt) - These cones won't move at all, but you should still try to run over
 them.
- Peng (2 pts) - They slide randomly around. If you hit them, you'll lose some speed,
but gain points. It's up to you if you want to try and aim for them.
- Cannon (2 pts) - They fire little cannonballs that can cause you to spin out. They
can't be destroyed by colliding with them.
- Giant Metool (3 pts) - larger versions of the other Mets; these can't be destroyed by
 crashing into them.
- Signboard (0 pts) - These just point you in the direction you need to go.

In-Race Items
-------------
Once your Item Counter reaches the zero mark, your window will start scrolling through
what you have available. Press the Circle button to select an item, and press it again
to use that item. Here's a list of the items you can use in Mega Man Battle & Chase.

- Blocking - Temporarily disallows opponents from using their special attacks.
- Count-Up - Increases the count of an opponent's item panel by 10 points.
- RC Bomb - Powerful bomb that is remote-operated. Press Circle once to place the bomb,
 then again to detonate it.
- Mine Change - All small enemies on the course will briefly change into mines.
- Power Nitro - Makes you temporarily invincible. Your top speed also increases during
 the use of this item.
- Thunderkid Goro - Causes lightning to rain down for a short time on your opponents,
 affecting their performance.
- Triple Chance - Use this item, and when you gain your next item, the results of that
 item are tripled.

Take note that while you're in first place, the computer will generally decrease your
chance of nabbing powerful items like Thunderkid Goro and Power Nitros, but if you're in
first place with a good lead, this shouldn't matter too much.

=================
7. Part Swapping:
=================
This is the process by which you upgrade your car with other racers' parts. Whenever
you beat an opponent (come in first place, that is), you are given choices of what
racer to steal a part from. You cannot take their body until you've won their Wing, Tire,
and Engine, so it's pointless to try. It does add a measure of replay, I suppose, but
the process is lengthy. Anyway, here's a listing of all the parts you can possibly
attain in the game. Note: When you steal a Body Part, you gain that racer's special
attacks.

Mega Man
---------
- Rush Body - Use the Mega Buster and Charge Shots.
- Twin Engine - Average speed and acceleration.
- Starter Wing - Enhances your acceleration power.
- All-Round Tire - Standard tires that are easy to control.

Roll
-----
- Beat Body - Jump and Spin Attack.
- Follow Engine - Max speed increases automatically if you're not in first place.
- Feather Wing - Enhances your cornering abilities.
- Non-Drift Tire - Does not slow down on dirt.

Protoman
--------
- Shield Body - Shield and Proto Strike.
- L-Blow Engine - High top speed, but low acceleration.
- Hi-Speed Wing - Increases maximum speed.
- Sharp Tire - Allows you to turn more sharply.

Bass
----
- Treble Body - Bass Buster and Bass Blast.
- Double Engine - Standard engine that is well-balanced.
- Accel Wing - Increases acceleration.
- Almighty Tire - Despite their name, these are identical to Mega Man's tires.

Guts Man
--------
- Twin Arm Body - Super Arm and Earthquake.
- Slope Engine - Performs better on slopes than on flat surfacing.
- Power Wing - Has great resistance to crashing.
- Press Tire - Travel faster on dirt road; allows you to drive over mines without
 skidding.

Quick Man
---------
- Turbo Body - Slide Dash and Quick Turbo.
- Dash Engine - Average max speed; good acceleration.
- Rocket Wing - Glows during the beginning of the race; during this time all abilities
(max speed and so forth) are increased, but effect wears off after 60 seconds. This
Wing also helps you get a Rocket Start easier.
- On-Road Tire - Goes faster on road but slows down extremely on dirt surfaces.

Ice Man
--------
- Polar Body - Ice Pillars and Ice Slasher.
- Aurora Engine - Above-average top speed engine with very powerful brakes.
- Blizzard Wing - Enables you to maneuver when in the air (otherwise you just keep
flying straight until you hit something).
- Non-Slip Tire - Prevents you from spinning out when taking sharp turns on ice. Helpful
 in certain areas.

Shadow Man
----------
- Ninja Body - Shadow Blade and Smoke Screen.
- Idaten Engine - Decent acceleration, but overall weak top speed.
- Hayate Wing - Special ability gauge fills up faster.
- Fuuma Tire - Recovers quickly from spins and skids.

Napalm Man
----------
- Full Metal Body - Mines and Napalm Bombs.
- Device Engine - Acceleration plates last longer when using this. Handy.
- Counter Wing - Increases number of points you get for destroying obstacles by 1.
- E-Guard Tire - Not affected by deceleration zones; faster on dirt roads.

Spring Man
----------
- Turn Punch Body - Turn Punch and Spring Attack.
- Happy Engine - Good acceleration and top speed but slows down more than most when
 going uphill.
- Lucky Wing - Increases your chances of getting a good item from the roulette. This,
of course, is subject to what the game creators considered to be "good" items.
- Hopper Tire - Automatically jumps mines. Very handy.

Dr. Wily
--------
- Bone Head Body - Enables you to fire shots like Wily does.
- Nova Engine - Once it reaches a speed of about 300 or so, you begin rapidly acceler-
ating, nearing top speed very quickly.
- Barrier Wing - Forms a barrier shielding the car from attacks, though after a bit of
pounding, the shield will collapse. This does not guard against anything except racer
 attacks.
- Ultimate Tire - Immune to deceleration zones, ice, and mines, but slows down on dirt
 and water.

Duo
---
- Giga Fist Body - Two fists fly out and attack.
- Final Engine - Normal acceleration, incredible top speed, and doesn't lose traction
 going uphill.
- Maximum Wing - Seems to enhance speed performance.
- Supreme Tire - These are immune to dirt and mines, though vulnerable to ice and decel-
 eration zones.

Bonus Parts
-----------
Hammer Body - Its non-charged attack swings a giant spiked ball on a chain around the
car. Fully charged, it fires the spiked ball forward which explodes on impact and
bounces all other cars slightly (similar to Guts Man's Earthquake attack). The fully-
charged attack can be thrown in any direction (even backward) by pressing the desired
direction the control pad while firing. Hitting an opponent solidly enough with spiked
balls can make him dizzy.
- Retro Engine - Good acceleration, and a fair top speed.
- Sky High Wing - Leaves the car every so often and tries to seek out your main compet-
itor. If it finds him or her, the wing hovers over the enemy's car and lifts it off
the ground, eventually stopping it dead for a brief moment before the wing drops the
enemy and returns to its owner.
- Blade Tire - Normal tires with a twist: running the tires' blades into an enemy car
will slash its tires. This basically causes the other car to slow down and begin
smoking for a few moments, similar to being hit with a Lightning Bolt or going over
deceleration zones. Your opponent is pretty much grounded for the duration of this,
 and cannot steer himself.

8. Secrets and Tips:
====================
1. There's a few other special racers in the game, so if you find yourself utterly bored
with the game after completing it every way from Sunday, you can take on the Shadow
Racers! These heavy racers are tough opponents built for speed, so make sure you've
got a speed-modified car before trying to take them on. To challenge them, go to a
new race, and when the lightboard robot appears, hold the gas down until the second
light comes on. Release the gas very briefly, then hit it again when the third light
comes on. If done correctly, you'll see the words "HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!", and
you'll be up against the Shadow Racers. Like I said above, these secret guys are
built for speed, not combat, so have a fast vehicle if you plan on taking them on.
  Some different Shadow Racers include:
  - Shadow Joe - the first one to challenge you of the Shadow Races, he's typical of a
Joe. He'll throw bombs around the course, and blow right by you at times. Once you
beat him, he'll tell you about the Rocket Start move, a cool item that allows you
to hit top speed as soon as the race begins. (!)
  - Shadow Roaders - Take on a team of four Roaders at once! Be careful as the pack
will tag-team you throughout the duration of the race, so some kind of rear-facing
attack is helpful in this situation. Defeat them to learn a new item-dropping
technique, where you can press the Down button thrice to drop something (like a
    Mine Change...)
   - Shadow Devil (no relation to X5) - A super fast version of the Yellow Devil, this
guy reveals to you some corner-taking trick that can be useful in some situations.
While taking a steep corner, if you crank the wheel in the opposite direction, you
can sometimes drastically increase your speed.
   - Shadow Team - Defeat the Shadow Devil to take on all three of the previous racers
at once! Phew! If you successfully manage to take out all of the Shadow Racers in
this race, the Shadow Joe will tell you a secret move that can be used to blow by
obstacles and your opponents. He tells you to press down, then Up on the D-Pad,
while simultaneously yelling and running over a mine, and you'll boost far ahead
     of the competition.
2. Playing as Duo:
Sorry folks, unless you were one of 1000 to win a special PSX Memory Card from Capcom
Japan by completing certain requirements in the game, you won't be able to play as
this character. Rumor has it that once you have seen the credits to the game, four
symbols appeared onscreen. You were supposed to copy these symbols, send them to
Capcom Japan, and enter a drawing to receive a mystical memory card containing data
for the Duo character. Needless to say, I never got one of these, and chances are, if
you're reading this guide, you didn't either. However, if you have played as Duo
through the use of this memory card, and want to submit his parts and stats for this

3. Special Credits:
While playing the game, gain the final Wily part, then beat the game, and you'll get
a different credits sequence than normal where a new instrumental plays, your winning
car is displayed, and the credits scroll by with the character portraits on the upper
  left corner.
4. Fun with Loading:
As many PlayStation owners know, the words "Now Loading" are a major pain, but you
can have fun with this screen while waiting for a game to load. On the P-Cone screen,
you can use Controller 1 or 2 to play around with the cones, and on the Auto & Eddie
screens, Controller 1 and 2 can play around with the two characters and make them
race around. A pretty handy diversion since some races can be like PS2 games when
loading - they can take a long time...
