My e-mail address will no longer be accepting questions about Madden or any of
my other guides. Please now go to: www.suresportsbets.com, and ask any
question you have about the game on the forums. There is a forum specifically
designed to answer these questions. Also, if you would like me to get back
into writing guides, please post in the forum. I haven't made a dime off
writing these guides, and due to the fact that I put 20-50 hours into writing
them, I just don't have the time anymore. If you would like to donate a few
dollars to my donation bin, to help me write more guides, I would really
appreciate it. Remember, the site is: www.suresportsbets.com.
Thank you.

Section: 1
Name: Introduction
Last Updated: 8/11/04
===========================================
Welcome to my Madden 2005 guide. I've been writing guides for a little over
five years now and it has come to my attention that there has never been a
really good guide for a Madden game. I'm going to change that this year, by
making the most comprehensive strategy guide that has ever been made for a
football game. Being a veteran of the Madden series (played it since the 3DO
days) I know basically all the ends and outs of the game. In Madden 2004, I
was unstoppable with the Minnesota Vikings rarely losing a game in tournaments
that I hosted. This year, with a lot of writing and a bit of luck, I can make
everyone that reads this guide a bit better. Though many wonder how a "sports
strategy guide" can help, I feel that my guide can improve your game
drastically. Whether you are just starting out as a Madden newbie, or you've
been playing this game since the Sega Genesis days, I believe that everyone can
improve somehow with every addition to the series.
Before you sit down with your cup of coffee and your sticks on your lap
waiting to be played, please take a few minutes to consider this. It takes me
hours upon hours to create a strategy guide to this magnitude. With all the
studying of the game, to the researching, to the re-iteration of my knowledge,
I could honestly be doing something more beneficial with my life. So this is
my plea to all of you. I'm trying to get into the video game writing industry
for my second time (I worked as a freelance writer for about 2 years when I was
16). I'm majoring in journalism at school, and I'm looking for a job. I'm 20
years old, and I'm willing to work. So please hire me :)...If that is out of
your hands, at least give my website a look where I'm trying to make my way
into being a Sports Columnist. (www.sundaysportsreport.com)
Writing these strategy guides are always a ton of fun for me, but answering
your e-mails are even better. I try to answer all e-mails within 8 hours of
being sent, and usually will respond to your questions over AIM if I'm not
drastically busy. My screen name on AIM is: FanBaseballDrew and my e-mail
address is
[email protected]. I would love getting an e-mail from anyone
who reads my guide. Don't feel uncomfortable about praising or criticizing
this guide, I take all comments with a grain of salt. And if you are
interested in sports in general (especially fantasy sports) make sure that you
give my website a look. The Sunday SportS Report is trying to become the #1
website, created, maintaned, and owned by regular sports fans so give it a
look:
http://www.sundaysportsreport.com
I'm sure most of you haven't made it this far down on the introduction, but if
you did, thank you for reading what I have to say. Remember to e-mail me with
any questions that you have, and make sure that you enjoy the guide. Thank you
for taking a look on my insights to Madden, and if you need any help, drop me
an e-mail. Enjoy Madden fans, this game is truely the best football game ever
created.

Section: 2
Name: Update History
Last Updated: 8/19/04
===========================================
This section of the guide should be read by everyone that is interested in
seeing how this guide is progressing. Here I tell exactly what has been
updated in every version of the guide. Though it may be insignificant to a one
time viewer, I hope that everyone will come back to this guide with any
questions or problems that pop up while playing the game.
-------------------------------
August 23rd, 2004 (Version 0.3)
-------------------------------
I've added a Madden/Fantasy Footall community if you are interested. Check it
out in the section called Sunday Sports Report Field Pass.
With the massive amounts of exposure that my Madden 2005 guide has gotten, I've
decided to open up The Sunday Sports Report Field Pass. This pass is dedicated
to every fan of Madden 2005 or Fantasy Football. By signing up for the Field
Pass, you'll receive the following benefits.
First off, 24/7 help in Madden 2005. This means either personal phone calls
sent directly to me or help online. Have a huge tournament coming up and need
some extra help? I'll be there to assist. Need some new tips and strategies?
Don't worry, I have tons of tricks up my sleeve!
Also, 24/7 fantasy football help. Drafts are happening all throughout the next
two weeks, and I'll be there to assist you with that draft question you need.
Your turn to draft and you don't know who to take? Call my cell, and I'll make
sure that I help you out. Also, if you like e-mail, there's an optional three
times a week fantasy newsletter, sent out on Monday Night, Friday Morning, and
Sunday (our Sunday Sermon sent out two hours before kickoff) which will have
exclusive information throughout the week.
If that's not enough, you'll get coverage to all my Madden guide updates before
the public gets it. This means behind the scene looks into what's going on for
the guide.
And finally, a community of people that are huge fans of either Madden or
fantasy football. Finally chat with people who share the common hobbies that
you do.
How much does all this cost? For the small price of $24.99, which comes out to
basically 6 cents a day, you'll receive all of this. Your membership is good
until January 30th, 2005, where then you can renew your membership for a
cheaper fee. Make sure that you get a hold of this offer when it's here,
because I'm only taking a select number of people. If you are interested about
this offer, or have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me at:
[email protected]. Thank you and hopefully I'll be in contact with all of
you quite soon.
-------------------------------
August 19th, 2004 (Version 0.2)
-------------------------------
Wow, I'm getting tons of e-mails giving me praise for this strategy guide. I
would like to thank everyone that has e-mailed me. For this version, I added
tons of tips and hints that should help you out in your game. From passing, to
running, to playing defense, and to learning how to control your players, you
should be able to add a lot more to your game by reading my in-depth
strategies. Also, I have updated the Mini camp part of the guide, adding in all
the Pro strategies which hopefully helps some people. This version of the
guide is exactly what I was talking about. I hope that it sets a new benchmark
in the quality of in-depth sports game strategy writing. There is still A TON
of stuff I have planned for this, so please bear with me in the next couple
days for another huge update. Franchise mode will soon be up and running
:)...Enjoy
-------------------------------
August 11th, 2004 (Version 0.1)
-------------------------------
The first version of the guide is officially up on two sites. SSR
(www.sundaysportsreport.com) and GameFAQs (www.gamefaqs.com). Both of these
sites will be hosting the most current version of the guide, so make sure that
you bookmark at least one of them. I would prefer SSR, due to it being my own
personal site. In my opinion, this guide is still pretty weak, due to my lack
of time to write it. I got Madden on Monday night, played it throughout the
night, woke up and went to work, and stayed up the following night writing
until basically daylight. This is the progressed I have made since then, so in
a very short time, there will be a lot more information. My goal of this guide
is to break down Madden in every possible aspect that I can possibly explain
making this guide a lot better than that Prima Guide that all the videogame
stores are trying to package with the game. And with a little help, (please
send in any information that you want to be posted in this gudie) I think that
I can have a excellent version of the guide up in a week or so. Until then,
look for DAILY updates to this guide, and please send in any suggestions you
have to my e-mail address at:
[email protected]. Thank you for your time.

===========================================
About 98 percent of the gamers who have this game are already use to the
controls present in Madden 2005. Basically, nothing has changed with the
exception of audibles and the hit stick. Other than that, the controls to the
game are almost identical to any of the previous Madden's on Playstation 2.

3A. Madden Classic Controls

The controls in Madden Classic are very easy to master. There aren't many
controls at all, and if you enjoy playing a game from the 16-bit era, then you
should be able to easily control your players right off the bat.

3B. Madden Vintage Controls
===========================================
The controls in Madden Vintage are a bit more difficult than the Madden Classic
Controls. While these controls are nothing close to the control that you have
in Madden 2005, it may take you a bit longer to adjust to these controls than
the Classic Controls.

The Madden Retro controls have the most similiar controls to Madden 2005. It's
still very nice to see all the new additions that has happened since the
Playstation 2 has come out. Can you believe those graphics were only five
years ago? I can't, and I can't see how someone can enjoy playing this version
of the game.

Section: 4
Name: Offensive Help
Last Updated: 8/19/04
===========================================
Passing is a huge part of football, and to win against good players or on All
Madden mode against the computer, you need to pass. Relying on one aspect of
offense will not get you anywhere in football, so you need to mix in the pass
and run at perfect opportunities. Instead of making reckless calls, you should
always be in control of the game when you have the ball. I am going to break
down my offensive strategy using the Atlanta Playbook. I believe that the
Atlanta Playbook is the most balanced playbook that I've came across, and even
though I don't use Atlanta as a team, I feel very comfortable using their
playbook. I have broken down many plays in the Atlanta playbook with a ranking
and a description of how to use the play. While this might be a bit in-depth
for some people, I feel that it is necessary to read for all Madden fans. The
rating key is very simple and easy to follow. Not all the plays are listed,
due to me never using them and/or having no desire to list them due to them
being lackluster plays.
Before reading on, the most important factor of Offense is control. No matter
how good someone says they are in Madden, they aren't shiat if they don't
control their wide receivers and their corners (on defense). Right after you
pass a ball, make sure that you switch over to your wide receiver asap. This
is essential when playing good people, because if you aren't controlling your
WR, and they are controlling their DB, you're never going to be able to
complete a pass other than those that count as interceptions.
A few basic tricks that I use during the game should also help you offensively
no matter what play you use. If you are throwing a deep ball (lob) run as fast
(with turbo) as far as you can. Don't worry about judging the ball, if you
press triangle right when the ball is coming down, you'll have a better chance
of catching the ball. When passing the ball, make sure that you don't only
throw bullet/lob passes, but use the analog in the right/left direction to aim
where you want to throw it. On the streak patterns, I usually aim to the same
side of the out of bounds line (aka right if throwing to a receiver lined up on
the right side of the QB) and then I control my wide receiver and move him to
the ball. I catch the ball while I'm still running over there, getting in
front of the DB. Right when the ball arrives, I press triangle (no matter
what, always press triangle) and I catch the ball 9/10 times in front of the
DB. It's a little cheap move, but it works really well. For short passes, I
tend to use bullet passes. When I'm trying to throw deep over the DB, I use
lob passes. When I'm trying to throw in front of the DB, I use bullet passes.
Also, try not to do the same thing on every possession. Don't always run on
1st, or pass on second, change it up. I know that it's nice always having a
short 2nd down after a nice run play, but don't be scared to run on 2nd and
long. It will work a lot better than you think. I usually try run once to
twice per every three downs. It makes the defense more susceptable to getting
thrown deep on, which is great.
Those are just basic tips, read on for actual strategies.
-------------------------------
Rating Key
-------------------------------
* Horrible Play
** Rarely Use, Hard To Excecute
*** Dependable Play That Can Be Ran 1-3 Times A Game
**** Excellent Play, Always Used
***** Money Play :)
-------------------------------
I-Form - Normal
-------------------------------
The I-Form is my favorite formation to run or pass out of. While playing your
friends, it is almost impossible for them to know if you are going to be
running or passing when you are set up in the I-Form. While every playbook is
a bit different, I am referring to the Atlanta Playbook while teaching you some
fundamental plays. I use the I-Form over 80 percent of the time, and I highly
recommend that you do the same.
Play Name: Price Option
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ****
Description: The Price Option is a play that you can run a few times in the
game. I use it usually in 2nd and short situations, knowing that I can always
pick up the first down the next play if I don't complete the ball. It's very
hard to get sacked while running this play, due to your fullback sitting there
waiting to pick up a rusher. When the coast is clear, your fullback when then
run out and find a nice little seam to catch the ball in the open middle field.
I usually don't throw to him though while running this play. Your #1 receiver
runs a nice pattern, where he does a double move and runs up the field. This
is a great play if the safefy is pre-occupied with your tight end who runs a
post in. If you see single coverage, which you will see a lot while running
this play, step back and throw the ball to your #1 receiver. if not, you
should have your #2 receiver sitting with his hands wide open on the left side
of your screen. Usually the DB will be behind him, so if you use a bullet
pass, you should be able to get a good 6 or 7 yards. If you see goal line
coverage, R1 (your running back) should be open on the flats. Throw to him,
not a bullet pass because he'll drop it, and he should have a nice little
scamper himself. Overall, this play is actually a really nice play to use in
the game, and I highly recommend it for anyone that wants to have a deep
playbook.
Play Name: Falcon QB Sweep
Play Type: Run
My Rating: **
Description: I'm not a big fan of this play at all because it is a designed QB
run play. I usually think running with the QB is easier to do when you drop
back on a deep pattern, and tuck the ball and run to the outside. The problem
with this play is that there are way too many people in the box. Usually, 7
guys will have a good chance of getting your QB on the QB draw, so there will
be no chance of breaking a long run. With only two wide receivers lined up,
defenses will be cheating on the run most likely. I don't recommend using this
play at all, especially with a slow QB.
Play Name: TE Flat
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ****
Description: I've liked the TE Flat play since my early Madden days, and it
still seems like it works like a charm in Madden 2005. Your running back runs
a nice little flat pattern, which he then curls up the field. Usually, he'll
be covered by a slow outside linebacker, which he should have no problem
beating. That is a good play for about 5 yards each time. Your #1 receiver,
runs a 10 yard curl. This curl is great to use, and can be excecuted very
well. Right when you see your receiver slow down to curl, throw a bullet at
him. Control him while the ball is in the air, and you'll definately pick up
7-8 yards. Your tight end runs a TE Flat, which usually is a hard pass to
throw. I tend to stay away from that. Your #2 receiver runs a inside post,
which is a great play if the safety bites on the run. Other than that, it's a
hard pass to complete. I enjoy this play, and I will use it at least four
times a game. It's not a play that is going to get you a ton of yards, but
it's a nice play to use on a second and long play.
Play Name: PA QB Draw
Play Type: Run
My Rating: *
Description: I think this is one of the worse plays in the Atlanta Playbook.
First off, running ANY type of play action gives your QB a much greater chance
of getting sacked. The idea of using a PA QB Draw, is outragerous. Stay away
from this play, and use it only if you are up a ton and want to fool around.
It's good for a "What the hell" comment from your friend after you run it, but
that's about it.
Play Name: Flats
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: *****
Description: This was my favorite play in Madden 2004 and it is still my
favorite play in Madden 2005. There are so many possible things that you can
do with this play, that it's very hard to throw an interception of get sacked.
At the start of the play, it looks like a typical run type of play. This is
great due to the fact that your opponent may run his safeties in for a blitz.
Right when you snap the ball, your fullback and running back run two opposite
flats. Usually, one of them will not be covered, which is good for 5 yards.
If they are both covered, and you have a semi-fast QB, you can usually scamper
5 yards by running right behind your running back. Due to the tight end
running an out, there will be no one on the left of your screen to cover a run.
If you have a slow QB, no sweat, you still have your two wide receivers running
streaks. If there is single coverage on any of them, make sure that you throw.
It's very hard for the computer or your opponent to stop you from catching a
ball when you are controlling both your QB, the strength of the pass, and your
wide receiver. If they are both double covered, your tight end should be open
right after he cuts into the field. When running this play, one of these
situations will happen. The only problem with this play is the fact that you
don't know what situation is going to occur. But if you have patient, you
should be able to use this play to your advantage each time. This is a great
play on first down, second down and short, or third down and 7 or more. Make
sure that you add this to your plays!
Play Name: HB Lead Dive
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ****
Description: My second favorite running play in the game, just behind the HB
Slam. I've been using the HB Lead Dive since Madden 2001 on Playstation 2, and
since then, it's been great for me. Your running back runs up the gut right
behind your fullback, ensuring that most of the time you'll get 3-4 yards. I
use this play at least once every eight downs, and I usually scamper about 5-7
yards with it. It's a big run play too, because I can't recall how many times
I've ran for a long touchdown running this play. Don't be patient while
running this play, instead run up the gut no matter what right when you get the
ball. The most movement I make behind the line of scrimmage is a right or left
juke, but other than that, I run right up behind my fullback. Once you get
comfortable with this play, you'll see how easy it is to read the defense and
no exactly where to run. If you see a lot of guys lined up to the right, and
you are running to the right, playmaker it to the left. This play works great
from either side of the field.
Play Name: HB Sweep
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ***
Description: The HB Sweep is a running play that is not one of my favorites,
but gets the job done with the defense is not blitzing. It's a delayed play in
my opinion because the fullback and the two left linemen try to run out and
block. So you must be patient while running this play. The problem with HB
Sweep is the fact that it's a win/lose type of play, where you can lose about
2-4 yards when the defense crowds the line. If you are willing to take a risk
like that, then add this to your playbook. I try running this play a few times
a game, to try to switch up run plays on my opponent.
Play Name: Quick Outs
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: **
Description: I don't like this play at all because there is no deep threat
present while running this play. Your two wide receivers run little outs,
while your tight end runs some weird pattern where he ends up running a bit
back to the line of scrimmage. I would not recommend throwing to your tight
end at all while running this play. because it's possible for the corner on the
right side of the screen to break from the coverage and try to pick off the
ball. Sometimes this plays works like a charm when you throw to you running
back who runs a flat. Usually though, there is a good chance of getting sacked
or intercepted while running this play, so I tend not to use it that much.
Play Name: HB Slam
Play Type: Run
My Rating: *****
Description: This is the best running play in the game, and it works like a
charm. When running the HB slam, you can easily pick up 5-7 yards on almost
every carry. There is so many possible ways that you can run after you see who
gets blocked and what gaps are open, that the benefits of running this play are
endless. First off, your fullback will come in and run up the middle. If you
like what you see up the middle, tail his butt as close as you can, till you
reach the secondary. If you don't like what you see, tail to the right (if the
play is designed to go to the right) and run horizontal. Usually, your wide
receiver will block off the corner, so you can run perpendicular and then up
the field for about 5 yards. The way to gain the most yards is to follow your
fullback, but if that fails, you can get about 3-4 yards by running
perpendicular to your fullback. While this may sound a bit confusing at first,
it's the ultimate run play that can be pulled out anytime. On long third
downs, don't be afraid to run this play. If the play is executed well when the
defense is playing the pass, you should have no problem picking up 9-12 yards
each time when you run the pass. Remember, jukes and speed burts are essential
to be good at running though. And when I mean jukes, sometimes it's just
better to take your hand off the analog, stop your rb, and move him in the
other direction while playing human controlled players.
Play Name: PA FA Blat
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ****
Description: I love Play Action plays, and this one is my favorite PA game in
the game solely on the streak that your #1 wideout runs. This play will work
perfectly at least once a game, resulting in usually a touchdown from wherever
on the field. A lot of times the safety will bite on the PA, leaving man on
man coverage down the field. It is essential to control you wide receiver when
you throw a long pass, especially while using this play. If you get in back of
the DB, make sure that you add a little more loft in your throw. If you are
behind him, throw a bullet and turn around your receiver and press triangle.
Although it will make him jump, he will also catch the ball 9/10 times. Also,
your tight end runs a little nice curl, which he usually is open if you have a
lot of time in the pocket. I usually don't pass to the rb or fullback while
using this play, but don't forget about your second wide receiver. He runs a
post, very similiar to that of TE Flat, which is always good for a catch or two
per game. Use this play a lot in the course of a game, but remember, with any
PA play, there is a great chance of getting sacked.
Play Name: HB Counter WK
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ***
Description: HB Counter WK is good to throw off your opponent when he thinks
that you are going to run up the gut. This play actually works better than
most people expect, because there are so many blockers out in front of your
running back which breaks him free. The problem with this play though is the
fact that it is somewhat of a "delayed" play, making you susceptable of losing
yards. The only time that I would recommend using this play is on a 2nd and 4,
because there is always a chance of losing yards. Don't use this play on first
down because no one likes a 2nd and 12, and don't dare to use this play on 3rd
and short. Instead, use it as a "waste" play when you think that you can pick
up the yards, though when the yards aren't exactly necessary to pick up on that
down.
Play Name: FB Dive
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ****
Description: In Madden 2004, it was almost impossible to get stuffed at 4th
and inches. In Madden 2005, it seems like the defense comes alive and it's
harder to get a few inches on 4th down. Don't risk running with your rb in
these situations, give it to your fullback. The fullback dive is the best play
to run in short yardage situations, especially thru the i-form. When you run
it thru goal line, everyone and their mother knows that you are going to be
running a running play. When you run it thru i-form, it leaves the defense
thinking that it may be a pass play. Sometimes I find it nice to use on 2nd
and 5 situations, because it is usually good for 2-3 yards.
Play Name: Crumpler Option
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The Crumpler Option is also a very nice play that you can find in
the I-Form of the Atlanta Playbook. Your two wide receivers run deep outs,
which are easy to complete if you get down the proper timing. Right when they
are about to take a step out, throw a bullet to them. Remember, to control
your receiver, and you should have no problem catching the ball. Being that
the outs are so deep, you can actually throw a bullet two seconds after you
hike the ball, and you can usually complete the pass because the cornerback
will be behind the receiver. That may sound a bit confusing, but test it out a
few tries and you'll understand what I mean. Your tight end will run a curl
also, but can change his route and run a streak if you want him to. I usually
don't throw it to the tight end, even though the play is designed to go to him.
Instead, I throw it to either of the two WRs or the running back, who runs a
little flat. The flat is usually not covered at all, giving a certain 4-6 yard
gain when completed. This is a nice little play to use a few times in a game,
especially on third and long situations
-------------------------------
I-Form - Twin WR
-------------------------------
I rarely, and I mean rarely, use the I-Form - Twin WR. I admit that some of
the plays are pretty good, but I am always too lazy to go that deep into the
playbook to use them. While most of the plays are the same as the regular
I-Form, except the fact that the WRs are on one side of the ball, there is one
play that is quite good in the I-Form - Twin WR.
Play Name: HB Screen
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: This HB Screen works well when used correctly. This is due to
the fact that if your running back is covered in the backfield, your number one
wide receiver should be singled covered down the field. Remember, whenever you
see single coverage, you should always throw the ball without hesistating.
When the screen works, you can break out long plays if you complete the screen.
Beware though, because sometimes when you running back drops the pass, the ball
is still live because you throw it behind. This can lead to unnecessary
fumbles, which usually turns into fumble returns for touchdowns because no one
is back there. So beware while running this play, but take the risk once or
twice in a game.
-------------------------------
Singleback - Normal
-------------------------------
I was never a huge fan of Singleback Formation due to the fact that it is a lot
harder to run with. When I see people lined up in Singleback formation, I am
almost positive that they are going to pass the ball. This gives me an
advantage from the start, so don't give people the same advantage when you are
on offense. There are a few passing plays that I enjoy in the singleback form,
but other than that, I don't bother with Tight, Big, 4WR, Trips Bunch or Slot
Strong.
Play Name: Jailbreak Screen
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: Surprisingly, the Jailbreak Screen works a lot more than you
would expect. If the screen is covered, I usually throw the ball away because
the two wide receivers that are running streaks are usually double covered.
While running this play, I like to move my QB to the left of the field (when
the screen receiver is on the right side of me) to try to draw the coverage
over there. Then when I can even see the wide receiver to the right of me, I
throw a bullet pass to him and I quickly press triangle right when I get
control of the WR. The time it takes to switch players and press triangle is
equivalent to the time it takes the ball to reach my WR, making it a perfect
timing situation. Usually, there is a cornerback being blocked right next to
the WR, so make sure that you don't run him into him. Once you get free from
that corner, you should be able to easily scamper about 10-15 more yards before
you are approached by the safety. While this play doesn't work all the time,
it should be used a few times in the game.
Play Name: PA Rollout
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: PA Rollout is another play that is pretty good to use a few times
in the Singleback formation. Instead of throwing to any of the receivers that
roll out, I usually tend to only the the ball to the wide receiver who runs a
streak. By him running the streak and the slot receiver running a post, the
safety usually gets confused and has to commit to one of them. This leaves one
of them on single coverage, making it a good play to use a few times in a game.
Play Name: WR Post
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The WR Post is another decent play that can be pulled out a
couple of times during a game. Your #1 wideout runs a streak, which can be
good if he is single covered. Your running back runs a little flat, which is
usually a sure 5 yards everytime you throw to him. The thing that I like the
best about this play is that the receiver in the slot usually blocks the corner
who is controlling your #2 receiver. This makes your #2 receiver wide open
after he gets done with turning for post. You should be able to see him
running across field, 20 yards upfield, with a trailing safety half the time.
With good precision passing, you should be able to complete this pass 70
percent of the time. While this isn't a great play to use all the time, it can
be used for 3rd and long situations.
Play Name: Post Corners
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: For some odd reason, usually the L1 or X receiver is singled
covered everytime when I run this play against the computer. It may be a
glitch or something, but I can usually complete this play 75 percent of the
time against the computer. The roblem with this play is that I tend to get
sacked a lot of times, waiting for my wide receivers to all get down the field.
It is essential to throw to one of the streak receivers, after the two outside
WRs break out. If you throw too early, you'll probably throw an interception
because there will be way too much traffic. Like most of the Singleback plays,
this play is a decent play that should work once or twice during the game.
Play Name: PA HB Curl
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: Sometimes this play is a total disaster, and sometimes you go the
whole way with this play. This play depends on what defense your opponent is
running. The receiver that runs the post is usually wide open down the field,
while the receiver that runs the curl can usually catch the ball with a bullet
pass. Your running back who runs a little curl 5 yards from the line of
scrimmage, is sometimes sitting there with no one around him. When this
happens, it is essential to throw to him. Once he catches the ball, it will be
a .2 second delay, for him to turn up the field and start running. Just
remember that if you need some extra yards on a long third down situation.
Play Name: WR Reverse
Play Type: Run
My Rating: **
Description: This play is a fun play to run, but it is very hard to execute
and actually gain yards with. When the play fails, you will usually lose 5-7
yards, which certainly does not outweigh the benefits of running this play.
The time it takes for the running back to hand it off to the wide receiver
seems like ages, and by the time the WR runs to where the QB was originally is
2 seconds. Your QB will run out to block, which usually fails, making this
play a total disaster. Like I said before, it is very hard to gain a
significant amount of yards with this play, making this play a high risk, low
gain play.
-------------------------------
Split Backs - Normal
-------------------------------
Like Singleback, I usually only run Split Back when I need a good passing play.
I've never been a fan of running without a fullback, especially in Madden 2005.
While you may get a good run once in a while, I find running with a fullback in
front to be a lot more beneficial. That is why all of these plays are passing
plays.
Play Name: Curls
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: In this play, your two wideouts and your tight end run all
similiar in curls. I find it easier to complete the pass after the whole curl
is completed for some odd reason in this certain play. Once they have ran
their curls, your receivers will be sitting there doing nothing. A bullet pass
is necessary here, for a fast hard completetion. Your receiver will get
tackled right away, but it will be a completion for about 5-8 yards. If you are
getting blitzed right from the beginning, quickly fire it to L1 (the running
back) on the flats. You will complete this pass about 50 percent of the time.
Play Name: Crumpler Option
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The Crumpler Option is also a very nice play that you can find in
the I-Form and also in the Split Back formation of the Atlanta Playbook. They
are basically the same play. Your two wide receivers run deep outs, which are
easy to complete if you get down the proper timing. Right when they are about
to take a step out, throw a bullet to them. Remember, to control your
receiver, and you should have no problem catching the ball. Being that the
outs are so deep, you can actually throw a bullet two seconds after you hike
the ball, and you can usually complete the pass because the cornerback will be
behind the receiver. That may sound a bit confusing, but test it out a few
tries and you'll understand what I mean. Your tight end will run a curl also,
but can change his route and run a streak if you want him to. I usually don't
throw it to the tight end, even though the play is designed to go to him.
Instead, I throw it to either of the two WRs or the running back, who runs a
little flat. The flat is usually not covered at all, giving a certain 4-6 yard
gain when completed. This is a nice little play to use a few times in a game,
especially on third and long situations. The only difference between the play
here and the play in I-form, is that the running back runs a different way in
when in this formation. Both of them are good, but when you run it from this
formation, it is more expected as a pass.
Play Name: Flats
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ****
Description: While Flats is my favorite play in I-Form, I find it not to be as
good in Split Back form. Instead of two wide receivers going deep, only your
#1 wide receiver will run a streak. The other will run a short curl out, which
usually ends up not working at all. The running back and the full back still
run their desired routes, but the tight end never breaks from the line. Scroll
up to read my full strategy on the play in I-Form, but don't expect the same
benefits when using it from Split Back Formation.
Play Name: TE Post
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The TE Post is a very similiar play to the WR Post which can be
found in Singleback Formation. While I like the WR Post a little bit more,
this play also works like a charm when used correctly. First off, your #1 wide
receiver runs a streak. Because your tight end runs a inside post, the safety
will have to commit to either the TE or the WR. Whichever one he commits to,
throw to the other guy for single coverage. If both are covered tight, you can
always throw across the field, which actually isn't dangerous in this play at
all. If you throw across the field, you should be able to control your wide
receiver to step in front of the DB and catch the ball. This a little more
complex, and could result in disaster if you totally mess up. If you are too
worried to do that, simply hit your RB on the flats. And don't forget about
your fullback running his curl 5 yards thru the field, he is sometimes more
wide open than Paris Hilton :)...
-------------------------------
Shotgun
-------------------------------
I decided to break down the Shotgun section into one major section, without
cutting it down from 2 RB 3WR and Trips Bunch. I use to run the Shotgun a lot
back in Madden 2001, and every year, I run it less and less. I find myself
running a shotgun play maybe once or twice in a game, making it the lease ran
formation I use. Many people criticize me for doing this, but I think that the
shotgun formation is mostly for newbs. First off, it is filled with mostly all
passing plays, letting the defense have the advantage right from the beginning.
When people run shotgun on me, I'm usually very relaxed until I get my user
pick. That's when I stress out the most, because i'm always trying to run the
ball back for a touchdown. So don't be on that side of the equation, simply
don't run the shotgun. Now many would argue, how do I throw deep then? Well,
there's plenty of plays out of the I-Form, Singleback, Weak, and Split Back,
which sends guy way down the field. Why run a play with 5 different receivers,
it does a ton more harm than good. First off, you won't have enough time to
throw the ball against a good defensive player, because he will be able to
blitz you from all corners while protecting the defense from a pass. So
basically anyone that is good can stop the Shotgun easily. Don't get me wrong,
there are so good plays in the Shotgun formation that will work 10 percent of
the time :), but you can say that about every play in every formation.
Basically, the shotgun to me is a picking game. It really doesn't matter what
play you choose, because ultimately, they all do the same. Run 3, 4, or 5 guys
around, a couple of them deep, and throw the ball to the open receiver. I
can't really explain a play that will work good all the time, because while
running Shotgun, you don't really know what type of defense you will be
against. Basically, people always tend to go to shotgun on 3rd and long
passes. I think running I-Form Flats ia a lot better than that. I'm sure that
many people won't agree with me on this, so feel free to e-mail me at:
[email protected] and we can debate this more.
-------------------------------
Weak I - Normal
-------------------------------
Weak I isn't a bad formation to run out of, but is usually overlooked in most
playbooks. While I don't run a lot of of this formation, there are a few plays
that I think are pretty cool that I would like you guys to try out. Though
they don't always work, they are good plays to change up from your regular
plays that you use all the time.
Play Name: TE Fade
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The TE Fade is a really cool play in my opinion, that works
actually pretty good after a little practice. First off, your running back
runs a little flat, which is not guarded half the time. Like you probably
already know, if you see him not guarded, throw to him asap. Your second wide
receiver runs a 10 yard streak, then turns it into a 45 degree post. Because
he is the only one on that side of the field, the safety usually picks up on
him. Your tight end, runs a 45 degree out right from the start, which crosses
him and your #1 wide receiver. With the other safety usually helping out on
him, your tight end should be wide open after the cross pattern. Throw a
semi-bullet, and you should be able to hit him for about 20 yards. This play
works like a charm if you have time in the pocket, and is a nice play to add to
your playbook.
Play Name: WR Streak
Play Type: Pass
My Rating: ***
Description: The WR Streak in Weak I is pretty self-explanatory. Your #2
receiver runs a streak, which usually is double covered. If he's not double
covered, he is the guy that you want to pass to. If he is though, your #1
receiver and your tight end run similiar patterns which confuses the safety.
Look for one of them to have single coverage, and exploit it. If both of those
plays fail, most likely due to you having no time to throw, simply throw to you
running back in the flats. He'll be running on the same side of the your
receiver and tight end, letting him run freely for at least 5 yards once he
gets past the outside linebacker.
Play Name: Quick Pitch
Play Type: Run
My Rating: **
Description: Though the Quick Pitch is very hard to execute, it's a really fun
play to run, especially because it always baffles your opponent in one way or
another. You can usually catch the defense off guard while running this play,
ensuring that you won't get sacked behind the line most of the time. The
problem is, if the defense is thinking run, you will probably be tackled way
behind the line of scrimmage. This play is dangerous too, because the outside
linebacker usually has a great angle on you to hit stick you. I've seen this
play cause a lot of fumbles before, so beware. It's fun though, because your
running back gets the ball so fast, that the defense reacts to the play a
little slower than you would think. This lets you run in and out a bit before
you get tackled.
-------------------------------
Full House
-------------------------------
Like Shotgun, Full House does not impress me at all. I never liked running it,
and I don't believe that I will ever start running it at all. I usually never
even run a play in the Full House formation once a game. I can see why fast
Quarterbacks might like running out of this formation (like Vick), but for
pocket passers this formation stinks. The running plays in here are all a
bit tricky to use, and the passing plays are horrible. Basically, I call Full
House a shoddier version of Goal Line.
-------------------------------
Goal Line - Normal
-------------------------------
Almost everyone and their mother uses the goal line formation in Madden, and it
works great. Almost every play in this formation works well, but I tend to use
just a couple of the running plays in the formation. Why mix it up more when
three plays in this formation always gets the job done for me?
Play Name: QB Sneak
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ****
Description: The QB Sneak is my favorite play of all in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or
4th and one situations. Out of all the plays in the game, I think that the QB
Sneak gives the best probability of gaining that inch. The only problem with
running the QB Sneak is the chance that you may fumble. Other than that, it's
a great play to run with ANY Quarterback in the game. It doesn't matter if
you're Michael Vick or Peyton Manning, anyone that uses the QB Sneak will get a
yard or two everytime!
Play Name: HB Dive
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ***
Description: The HB Dive works well even when you aren't in goal line
situations. I always felt a bit dirty when I ran this play in mid field, but I
don't mind when I see the benefits it does to my run game. When you get the
defense running Dime, and you run goal line on a long 2nd down play, you should
be able to scamper at least 7-10 yards. With all the blockers on the line, you
will follow them up field until you get tackled. It's a great play to run in
any sort of occasion, and it's also kind of fun.
Play Name: FB Dive
Play Type: Run
My Rating: ****
Description: The FB Dive from goal line is wonderful. Don't risk running with
your rb in these situations, give it to your fullback. The fullback dive is
one of the best play sto run in short yardage situations. When you run it thru
goal line, everyone and their mother knows that you are going to be running a
running play. While this is bad in a way, it's almost impossible to stop
still. I feel safer when I run it thru I-Form, but it works just as good thru
Goal Line.
If you have any further questions about offense, feel free to e-mail me.
===========================================
Section: 5
Name: Defensive Help
Last Updated: 8/19/04
===========================================
As the years progress, many people believe that defense wins game. I totally
agree, I average 2-5 user picks a game against the computer (All-Madden) or
against my friends. To master playing defense, you first need to not peak at
your friends play. Peaking while playing Madden is the ultimate Madden sin, so
make sure that you are never convicted of being a "Peaker". I don't think that
its necessary to even see your opponents formation, I don't believe in that
either. That is my personal opinion though, and I know a lot of people will
disagree with me for some odd reason. Well, anyways, similiar to my Offensive
Help, I've added a Defensive Help section. While Defense is a lot more deeper,
I actually think that there are less plays that you need to run. I only run
about 3-6 total defensive plays, and I have no problem with stopping the run or
the pass with just that many plays. So instead of rating tons of plays, I'm
going to first go over all the pros/cons of each formation, and then go on to
what plays that I think that everyone should use. My defense is ran off the
4-3 defensive playbook, which is ultimately the best playbook to use.
Now before I can go on, I must beg you to control your cornerbacks on passing
plays. I don't mean control them before the ball is hiked, I feel that
controlling your lineman or blitzing with a linebacker who doesn't need to
really cover anyone is the best to control before the snap. But on passing
plays, it is necessary to control your DB or safety when the ball is in the
air. Many people feel that they will mess up and give up big plays, but you
make way more big plays in the long run. I don't even see how the game is fun
to people who don't control their corners, because I feel that defending the
long ball is the most heart pumping part of the game. Like I mentioned
earlier, I usually average 2-5 User Picks a game. How do you ask? Practice,
tons of practice since Madden 2001. First off, turbo is key whenever you are
controlling a defender. Always be pumping the turbo button. But the most
important factor is timing. If you time your jump wrong, you can give up a
touchdown very easy. A few tricks I do is on deep passes, I slow down the wide
receiver by running in front of him, stopping for like .3 of a second, and then
running again. Because the ball is already thrown to a spot that the receiver
is expected to run to, the only guy that is going to have a chance to get the
ball is you because the receiver is too far back from the ball. This is a
cheap move to do, but it works all the time, especially in Madden 2005 where
there are less penalties than any other Madden game.
Another thing that you must remember, is if you are getting beat deep, don't be
scared to dive rather than jump. Pressing square is the scariest button to
press for some people when the ball is coming down in the receivers hand, but
it usually saves a big play. Figure it this way. Say your receiver is beat
deep (could be just due to the formation you were running, not because of you)
instead of pressing triangle to try to pick a ball that is thrown 3 feet over
you, press square right when the ball touches the receivers hand. d You will
tackle him, which will make him drop the ball 80 percent of the time. Instead
of giving up a long completion play that would probably have gone for a
touchdown anyway, you make a incredible defensive play. Trust me, have faith
in diving at the feet of the wide receiver right when he catches the ball,
he'll drop it most of the time.
I always blitz someone on each play, I just read the field by pressing R2 and
looking at all the guys on the field. The guy that I think can leave his man
or leave his position, I blitz in a heartbeat. It's always different each
play, so I can't really give tips on it.
Finally, on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and short plays, make sure that you move your
coverage to bump and run. This ensures that they your opponent can not get a
fast throw off, because it will most likely be intercepted. On long 3rd downs,
make sure you move your coverage off the receivers a lot, protecting the first
down line.
If you need any additional help on controlling your DBs, feel free to e-mail
me. Now onto the in-depth part.
-------------------------------
4-3 Formation
-------------------------------
The 4-3 is my favorite formation to run. While many people argue it sucks when
there are more than two wide receivers on offense, I am always confident that
my safeties or OLBs will cover them. The 4-3 is the simple, 4 lineman, 3
linebackers, 2 dbs, and 2 safeties. It is awesome for stopping the run, yet
great for stopping the pass. I've been using the 4-3 Formation a lot since
Madden 2001, but it does have its problems. On 5 receiver wide out sets,
everyone is covered man to man, so if you aren't good with controlling your
defensive backs, you may get torched. I find that running the 4-3 takes a lot
of user control confidence in a person. I rarely ever get beat deep, whether
when it's man to man coverage, or double coverage. I think that the 4-3
Formation is a formation that you should run at least 60 percent of the time.
Just remember, it's weakness is when there are many wide receivers out on the
field.
Play Name: Engage Eight
Description: This play is great when you expect your opponent of running. It
brings 8 guys into the box, to stop almost any run possible. The problem is
that if your opponent passes, there will be no safety help on one side of the
play. It's not a good play to run twice in a row, but it's a GREAT play to run
when you know your opponent is going to run.
Play Name: Double QB Spy
Description: This was the most amazing defensive play last year, and this year
its almost as good. I run this play all the time, even when I know that a QB
like Brad Johnson isn't going to be running. This play allows the linebackers
to guard anything in the middle of the field, setting up only deep passes.
Because I can stop deep passes the best, this play is the ultimate interception
play to use. It's great against the run, and great against the pass. The only
problem with this play is when two wide receivers line up on one side and both
run streaks. It leaves one DB covering two guys, which is a bit hard to manage
when you are just learning how to play good defense.
-------------------------------
3-4 Formation
-------------------------------
I never use the 3-4 Formation at all, because I don't like having that many
linebackers in the game at once. This formation would only be good for teams
that have 4 better than average linebackers. You wouldn't want to run this
formation with teams that have weak linebackers, because this defense will get
torched thru short runs and passes. The 3-4 formation is similiar to the 4-3,
but I don't see really any good in it at all. I would stay away from this
defense as much as possible, because honestly, it's just a shoddier version of
the 4-3 in my opinion. Too susceptable to runs, just a tad better for short
passes.
-------------------------------
Nickel Formation
-------------------------------
I like using Nickel Formation a lot, especially when I believe that my opponent
is going to be passing. Surprisingly, when you use the two Nickel plays I use
in the game, the nickel formation can easily stop the run too. I rather be
using 4-3 to stop the run, but Nickel works when necessary. Nickel defense is
a bit different than the 4-3, because while it still has four big lineman up
front, there's only two linebackers. There's three corners, which if your
opponent is only lined up with two wide receivers, it's very nice to blitz with
the extra corner or linebacker. It's hard to get beat deep with Nickel, making
it a very nice formation to use.
Play Name: 9 Velcro
Description: I love this play when I need to defend the short ball and the
long ball at one time. It seems like there are 20 guys on the field when I run
this coverage, and it's very rare to get passed on when bringing the corners to
bump and run coverage. It's a great defense to run on all medium range passing
plays, and it will not disappoint.
Play Name: Double X
Description: Getting beat deep? Shame on you, next time make sure that you
have two guys on him all the time. Double X, Double Y, Double TE are all good
plays to use when you are getting beat over and over again by the same person.
Play Name: Engage Eight
Description: This play is great when you expect your opponent of passing but
he runs. It brings 8 guys into the box, to stop almost any run possible. The
problem is that if your opponent passes, there will be no safety help on one
side of the play. It's not a good play to run twice in a row, but it's a good
play to run when you think there is a small chance that he may still be running
on long yardage situation.
-------------------------------
Dime Formation
-------------------------------
Like the Shotgun section of my Offensive Help part of the guide, Dime coverage
is very similiar in this section of the guide. I use to use Dime all the time
back in earlier Madden games, but now I feel that it is obsoleet. It doesn't
have any better plays than Nickel coverage, yet it takes away a linebacker. If
you really think that your opponent is going to be throwing deep or running a 4
or 5 wide receiver set, please pick Quarter Defense, which is a lot better in
my opinion.
-------------------------------
Quarter Formation
-------------------------------
Use this whenever you know a Hail Mary or a deep route is going to be thrown.
This will definately shut down any long pass, especially when you move back the
corners. By moving back the corners, you risk giving up short passes. But
other than that, the Quarter Formation is the best formation to use for long
passes with multiple receivers. There's only one play that you need to use for
defending the long pass and that's prevent.
Play Name: Prevent
Description: This is essential to use on 3rd and 20 situations. The chances
of giving up a pass using Quarter Prevent is very rare, especially when you are
controlling your DB and blitzing the appropriate person. If it's a really long
play, feel free to move your corners back even farther.
-------------------------------
Goal Line Formation
-------------------------------
Goal line is great for 3rd/4th down and short plays. When you are positive
that you opponent is going to run, and I mean POSITIVE, run goal line. If they
decide to throw on you, there will be man on man coverage at the best, so
beware. There's only one play I use in the goal line formation, and it seems
to get the job done for me. It's impossible to always stop the short plays,
but by running goal line, you'll have the best chance to do so.
Play Name: Gaps Fire
Description: This sends the whole line in basically, which brings a lot of
pressure to the QB. If the offense runs a passing play, it's hard to get the
ball off because there is so much pressure. If the offense runs a running
play, be prepared to stuff the running back right when he gets the ball. This
is a great play to stop the short running plays!

------------------------------------------------------------------
Rookie Challenges/Game Situations
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: QB - Pocket Presence (Rookie)
Team: Atlanta Falcons
Location: Atlanta, GA
Personal Best: 1650
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Stay in the Pocket and find the open Receivers
-Hit the primary Receiver while he's open
-To throw the ball press Square, X, Circle, L1, R1
-Earn more points by completing passes in a row
-To pump fake press R2
Trophies: Bronze - 900 Points
Silver - 1200 Points
Gold - 1400 Points
Rewards: Card #208 - Pocket Protectors
Personal Strategy: This challenge is very easy and you should have
no problem getting gold on your first or second
try. With only three targets to throw at, and
only one ball coming at you from the five targets,
you should be able to avoid getting sacked at all.
Vick has a fast release, and he's easy to control
in the pocket area, so you should have no problem
running out of the pocket. Remember, if you
complete 3 or more passes in a row, you'll get
100 points for each pass completed after that.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: QB - Pocket Presence (Rookie)
Description: -Your Falcons are trailing the Panthers 21-20 with
2:00 left in the game.
-Lead an aerial assault with your Falcons and
conserve time by using your 3 timeouts
-Score the game-winng field goal or touchdown before
time expires.
Rewards: #263 - ATL - Cheerleader
Personal Strategy: This situation is very easy because you are playing
on rookie. Though you don't have any running plays,
you can easily scramble with Vick to pick up first
downs. I don't really have anything special to say
about this challenge because I completed it in 20
seconds. Do what works for you and if you have
trouble, then you shouldn't be playing Madden 2005.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: LB - Chase and Tackle (Rookie)
Team: Baltimore Ravens
Location: Baltimore, MD
Personal Best: 2,780
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Tackle The HB as quickly as possible
-To attempt a diving tackle press Square
-To sprint hold down Circle
-To strip the ball press R2
Trophies: Bronze - 800 points
Silver - 1475 points
Gold - 2000 points
Rewards: Card #194 - 3rd Down
Personal Strategy: This challenge is extremely easy. If you use the
big hit stick, you'll be able to make the Lewis
fumble at least once which will give you even a
bigger bonus. With no blockers, you should be able
to hit Lewis behind the line of scimmage each time.
This challenge is very simple, and you should turn
off the game and stop playing if you can't get gold
on your second try.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: LB - Chase and Tackle (Rookie)
Description: -Your Ravens are trailing the Browns 24-20 with
2:00 remaining in the game.
-Stop the Browns from getting a 1st down and use your
-3 timeouts to stop the clock.
-Force the Browns to punt the ball with at least
1:30 left in the game.
Rewards: #274 - BAL - Cheerleader
Personal Strategy: Well, you know that the Browns are going to run the
ball all three downs so just use field goal block
on them. The running back will not be able to get
out of the backfield on any of the downs. Then
just pick punt return and make sure that you don't
fumble the ball. Then get your Madden card and move
on.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: DB - Swat Ball (Rookie)
Team: Buffalo Bills
Location: Orchard Park, NY
Personal Best: 1060
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Swat passes down with L1
-Use the strafe R1 to face the line of scrimmage
-Go for interceptions using Triangle for higher
scores
-Earn more points by stopping consecutive passes
Trophies: Bronze - 300 points
Silver - 600 points
Gold - 900 points
Rewards: Card #199 - Lame Duck
Personal Strategy: The DB is very good at intercepting the ball
and should have no problem doing so if you get him
in the right position before the ball is thrown.
I usually stay to the side of the two closer targets
and then run in front of the target while the ball
is in the air, catching the ball in stide. I don't
bother using the swat button or using R1 to face
the line of scrimmage. Instead of doing that, I
think it is easier to time the ball from a run facing
the ball with your back turned or to the side. Go
for the interception each time, and once you get a
couple in a row, you'll get 80 points for each
following one. This is not a hard challenge to
complete at all, but it may take 1-3 tries to get
gold.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: DB - Swat Ball (Rookie)
Description: -Your Bills are leading the Jets 20-14 late in the
4th quarter.
-The Jets have the ball at their own 20 with 2:00
left and 1 timeout remaining.
-Prevent them from scoring a touchdown by
controlling only your defensive backs.
Rewards: #263 - BUF - Cheerleader
Personal Strategy: It's obvious that the Jets are only going to throw
the ball. Use nickel defense, Velcro 9 and wait
until Pennington throws an interception. Even if
you don't get an interception, there is a very
small chance that they are going to be able to get
into the red zone. This is a very easy challenge,
especially when you use Velcro 9.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: DL - Trench Fight (Rookie)
Team: Philadelphia Eagles
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Personal Best: 6.99 seconds
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Capture the flags as quickly as possible
-Spin or rip left with L1
-Spin or rip right with R1
-To Shove press Circle
Trophies: Bronze - 9.00 seconds
Silver - 8.00 seconds
Gold - 7.00 seconds
Rewards: Card #209 - Penetration
Personal Strategy: With only three guys to truck and 7.00 seconds to
get gold, this challenge shouldn't take you more
than 2 minutes to complete. Juke right and push
the first guy, go straight after the second guy and
push him, and try to push the third guy down the same
way you pushed the second guy down. The second guy
is the easiest to push down, but it is almost
necessary to push the third guy down to get the third
flag in Gold time. If you get past the first guy
within 1.75 seconds, you are on good pace to get the
gold.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: DL - Trench Fight (Rookie)
Description: -Your Eagles are leading the Giants 20-14 late in
the 4th quarter.
-The Giants have the ball at their own 20 with 2:00
left in the game.
-Prevent them from scoring a touchdown by controlling
only your defensive linemen.
Rewards: #262 - PHI - Cheerleader
Personal Strategy: This game situation is a breeze. I just used
Nickel Defense, Cover 3 and it took care of business.
I just rushed the Kearse by controlling him and had
no problem stopping the Giants. There really isn't
much more I can say about this very easy game
situation.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: K - Clutch Kicking (Rookie)
Team: Detroit Lions
Location: Detroit, MI
Personal Best: 2400 Points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Hit the target to earn points
-To start and stop the power meter press X
-To stop the accuracy meter press X
-Pay attention to the wind direction and strength
Trophies: Bronze - 900 points
Silver - 1500 points
Gold - 2200 points
Rewards: Card #197 - Da Boot
Personal Strategy: I never liked kicking on rookie because I'm use to
kicking on All Madden. I think this is the hardest
rookie challenge because you can only miss the bulls
eye (Red) twice and still come away with the gold.
If wind is a factor, reset it until you get 0 mph
wind. The values are as follow: Yellow = 75 points,
Orange = 150 points, Red = 300 points. Basically,
if you get a yellow, you should just restart. This
is no benefit to kicking the ball with less power,
because it takes the ball more time to get to target.
This challenge may take 5 minutes or so to get gold
on, because the new kicking meter is a bit slower
so it's hard to get your timing back. Don't worry
about watching your power, your accuracy is what
matters in this drill.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: K - Clutch Kicking (Rookie)
Description: -Your Lions are trailing the Packers 14-13 with :10
left in the game.
-You have the ball at the Packers' 25 on 3rd down
and 24 with 1 timeout remaining.
-Score the game-winning field goal or touchdown
before time expires.
Rewards: #268 - DET - Pump Up Crowd
Personal Strategy: Use HB Slam under I-Form and try to gallop as many
yards as possible. Call a timeout right after you
get tackled and kick the field goal. The field goal
should be a chip shot so you shouldn't have any
stress even though your controller will be rumbling.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: P - Coffin Corner Punt (Rookie)
Team: Cleveland Browns
Location: Clevenland, Ohio
Personal Best: 1000 points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Aim for the targets on the field
-Hit the bull's-eye for higher points
-Red = 200, Orange = 100, Yellow = 50 pts.
-To start and stop the power meter press X
-To stop the accuracy meter press X
Trophies: Bronze - 250 points
Silver - 650 points
Gold - 900 points
Rewards: #211 - Coffin Corner
Personal Strategy: This is a very easy challenge that should take no
more than 5 turns to get gold. I aim the kicking
meter halfway from being straight up, and kick the
ball with anywhere from 70-78 power. I then aim
directly at the red bulls eye, and if you get
the kicking accuracy anywhere in the 90 percent zone,
you should hit the bullseye each time. The only
hard part about this whole challenge is that if you
kick the ball over 80 percent power, your ball will
drop in the endzone. Once you find the right height,
it should be a breeze.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: P - Coffin Corner Punt (Rookie)
Description: -Your Browns are leading the Bengals 10-6 on 4th
down with 1:00 left in the game.
-Nail the Bengals deep in their own territory to
prevent a comeback.
-Punt so the Bengals' starting line of scrimmage
is within 15 yards of their endzone.
Rewards: #254 - CLE - Pump Up Crowd
Personal Strategy: This is very easy because you are already on the 40
yard line so you only need a 25 yard punt out of
bounds. Put the kicking meter all the way up and
aim the ball out of bounds. The ball should easily
have enough strength if you kicked the ball with 90
or more power.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: QB - Precision Passing (Rookie)
Team: New York Giants
Location: East Rutherford, NJ
Personal Best: 1080 points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Pass the ball through the rings
-Rings are placed based on difficulty of route
-Gold = 75, Silver = 50, Bronze = 25 pts.
-To snap the ball press X
-To throw the ball press X, Square, Circle, L1, R1
-Hold button for a bullet pass or tap it for touch
Trophies: Bronze - 500 points
Silver - 750 points
Gold - 1000 points
Rewards: #210 - QB On Target
Personal Strategy: On Play #1, move a little to the right and hit the
silver pattern right when the Shockey plants his
foot to turn right. Do the same on the gold pattern,
moving a bit more to the right. On the bronze
pattern, there's a lot of room for mistake. I move
Warner a bit to the right, and throw a bullet right
when Toomer is approaching the target. 310
On Play #2, right step straight back and hit Shockey
right after he takes one step in thru the bronze
target. Make sure to throw a bullet pass. For
Hilliard, step an inch to the right and throw a
bullet right after he takes two steps out. This is
for the silver target. For Toomer, step back and
wait until he crosses the 35 yard line. Then
throw a floater and it will cross right thru the
gold ring.
On Play #3, step right in front of the bronze target
and let Shockey go right behind it. Then throw a
bullet. For the silver target, let Toomer take
two steps in and then throw a bullet. It should hit
him right in stide thru the silver target. For the
gold, let Hilliard run right underneath the gold
target and then throw a bullet. I moved Warner a
tad bit to the left when I threw the pass.
Overall, this challenge is a bit hard to get gold
until you get down my tips. Then you should be able
to complete it perfectly without missing a target
or dropping a catch. Don't worry if this takes you
10 minutes to get gold, it's one of the harder
Rookie challenges.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: QB - Precision Passing (Rookie)
Description: -Your Giants are trailing the Rams 14-12 with 2:00
left in the game.
-Lead an aerial assault with your Giants and conserve
time by using your 3 timeouts.
-Score the game-winning field goal or touchdown
before time expires.
Rewards: #265 - NYG - Pump Up Crowd
Personal Strategy: You start off on your own 45 and you have plenty
of time to get a scoring drive going. Don't worry
about the time at all, you could basically go down
the field and save all your timeouts without any
problems. The easiest way to score is to test the
corner that is guarding Amani Toomer. You can beat
this guy so easy that it's pathetic. Once you get
into field goal range, kick the field goal. There's
no extra reward in scoring a touchdown, so it's
pointless.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: RB - Ground Attack (Rookie)
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Location: Kansas City, MO
Personal Best: 2520 Points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Rookie
Description: -Score as many TDs as you can
-Hold down X to sprint
-To spin press Circle
-To stiff arm press L2 or R2
Trophies: Bronze - 800 points
Silver - 1400 points
Gold - 2100 points
Rewards: #195 - Human Plow
Personal Strategy: This is by far the easiest challenge in all of the
Rookie Challenges. With only two guys to tackle you
and Richardson blocking, you can basically just
run around and let Richardson block both guys for
you. I personally like to score on each possession,
so I run behind the blocking pads to juke out the
defenders. This is not necessary in the rookie mode
though because all you really need to do is run
straight behind Richardson. It's ok if you get
tackled once or twice because it's still very easy
to get gold.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Situation: RB - Ground Attack (Rookie)
Description: -Your Chiefs are leading the Raiders 21-20 with 1:50
remaining in the game.
-Run the ball to eat up the clock and prevent the
Raiders from getting the ball back.
-Seal the victory by running down the clock or
scoring a touchdown.
Rewards: #258 - KC - Cheerleader
Personal Strategy: Just run the ball up the gut until you get a first
down. Then milk the play clock as long as you can
to get the victory. Don't forget about Tony
Richardson as your fullback. A fullback counter
is always good for at least 4 yards. You start out
with a 1st and 5 so there should be no sweat to get
the first down. Try to get the first down on third
down, so that the Raiders have already wasted their
timeouts. It's a lot easier to win that way.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pro Challenges/Game Situations
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: QB - Pocket Presence (Rookie)
Team: Minnesota Vikings
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Personal Best: 1450
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Stay in the Pocket and find the open Receivers
-Hit the primary Receiver while he's open
-To throw the ball press Square, X, Circle, L1, R1
-Earn more points by completing passes in a row
-To pump fake press R2
Trophies: Bronze - 800 Points
Silver - 1100 Points
Gold - 1325 Points
Rewards: Card #208 - Pocket Protectors
Personal Strategy: This challenge is a little harder than the Rookie
one because there is five different ball cannons,
and two balls come out per throw. There are also
four wide receivers, with three of them lined up
on on side of the screen. Still, the balls come out
pretty slow, which makes it quite easy to just step
away from the ball. This challenge is still very
easy to complete, and I beat it on my first try
without getting sacked. If you had no problem with
the Rookie one, you shouldn't have a problem with
this one.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: LB - Chase and Tackle (Pro)
Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Personal Best: 2860
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Tackle The HB as quickly as possible
-To attempt a diving tackle press Square
-To sprint hold down Circle
-To strip the ball press R2
Trophies: Bronze - 1000 points
Silver - 1725 points
Gold - 2250 points
Rewards: Card #194 - 3rd Down
Personal Strategy: This challenge is extremely easy. If you use the
big hit stick, you'll be able to make the Staley
fumble at least once which will give you even a
bigger bonus. With no blockers, you should be able
to hit Staley behind the line of scimmage each time.
This challenge is very simple and is just as easy
as the Rookie Challenge. The only difference is that
Staley tries to juke a little more, but it really
doesn't do anything at all.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: DB - Swat Ball (Pro)
Team: Houston Texans
Location: Houston, TX
Personal Best: 830
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Swat passes down with L1
-Use the strafe R1 to face the line of scrimmage
-Go for interceptions using Triangle for higher
scores
-Earn more points by stopping consecutive passes
Trophies: Bronze - 300 points
Silver - 575 points
Gold - 800 points
Rewards: Card #199 - Lame Duck
Personal Strategy: The DB is very good at intercepting the ball
and should have no problem doing so if you get him
in the right position before the ball is thrown.
I usually stay to the side of any of the targets
and then run in front of the target while the ball
is in the air, catching the ball in stide. I don't
bother using the swat button or using R1 to face
the line of scrimmage. Instead of doing that, I
think it is easier to time the ball from a run facing
the ball with your back turned or to the side. Go
for the interception each time, and once you get a
couple in a row, you'll get 80 points for each
following one. This is not a hard challenge to
complete at all, but it may take 1-3 tries to get
gold. It's exactly like the rookie challenge but it
has 4 targets, which are all very easy to reach.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: DL - Trench Fight (Pro)
Team: New York Jets
Location: East Rutherford, NJ
Personal Best: 9.58 seconds
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Capture the flags as quickly as possible
-Spin or rip left with L1
-Spin or rip right with R1
-To Shove press Circle
Trophies: Bronze - 14.00 seconds
Silver - 11.75 seconds
Gold - 9.75 seconds
Rewards: Card #209 - Penetration
Personal Strategy: This trench fight is a bit harder than the first
one on Rookie, but it's still pretty easy. The
first guy you encounter, juke right and then push
him over. You should be running to the next guy
with only 1.5 seconds on the clock. The 2nd guy
is the easiest. While running, just run around
to the right of him. Don't bother making contact,
it's easier just to run around him. When you
approach the third/fourth guy, run to the guy on
the right and push him over. He falls pretty
easy, especially when you are going with full
momentum. While running along to hit the last guy,
hit him straight on to push him over. Sometimes
he doesn't fall, which is pretty lame, because it's
the last guy to get thru. It's not a hard challenge
though, so it shouldn't take you more than 7 tries.
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Name: K - Clutch Kicking (Pro)
Team: Miami Dolphins
Location: Miami, FL
Personal Best: 2250 Points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Hit the target to earn points
-To start and stop the power meter press X
-To stop the accuracy meter press X
-Pay attention to the wind direction and strength
Trophies: Bronze - 900 points
Silver - 1500 points
Gold - 2200 points
Rewards: Card #197 - Da Boot
Personal Strategy: I feel that this is easier than the rookie challenge
because the meter goes a bit faster. You start on
the 25, which isn't a long kick at all. It's still
a hard challenge because you can only miss the bulls
eye (Red) twice and still come away with the gold.
If wind is a factor, reset it until you get 0 mph
wind. The values are as follow: Yellow = 75 points,
Orange = 150 points, Red = 300 points. Basically,
if you get a yellow, you should just restart. This
is no benefit to kicking the ball with less power,
because it takes the ball more time to get to target.
This challenge may take 5 minutes or so to get gold
on, because the new kicking meter is a bit slower
so it's hard to get your timing back. Don't worry
about watching your power, your accuracy is what
matters in this drill.

Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)

-Red = 200, Orange = 100, Yellow = 50 pts.
-To start and stop the power meter press X
-To stop the accuracy meter press X
Trophies: Bronze - 250 points
Silver - 600 points
Gold - 800 points
Rewards: #211 - Coffin Corner
Personal Strategy: This challenge is almost as easy as the rookie
challenge. It's easier to go to the right corner.
Have your kicker power close to the low 80s, and
move the analog just a notch up for the kicking
height. Make sure that you accuracy is in the 90s,
and you will easily be able to master this challenge
like you did on Rookie.

Challenge Name: QB - Precision Passing (Pro)
Team: Seattle Seahawks
Location: Seattle, WA
Personal Best: 1080 points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Pass the ball through the rings
-Rings are placed based on difficulty of route
-Gold = 75, Silver = 50, Bronze = 25 pts.
-To snap the ball press X
-To throw the ball press X, Square, Circle, L1, R1
-Hold button for a bullet pass or tap it for touch
Trophies: Bronze - 500 points
Silver - 750 points
Gold - 1000 points
Rewards: #210 - QB On Target
Personal Strategy: On Play #1, move slightly to the left and throw
right when your tight end is starting to cross the
silver ring. Make sure that you throw a bullet. To
get the gold, wait until Robinson takes two steps out
and starts running up to the gold ring. Throw a
bullet straight with your finger holding the analog
up, and you should hit the top of the ring. Jackson
is the easiest to get. Move to the left slightly,
and wait until Jackson turns right next to the bronze
ring. Then throw a bullet.
On Play #2, let Mili run two steps to the right, and
then throw a bullet. Move Hasselback a little to the
right before you throw this, lining him perfectly
close to the beginning of the bronze ring. Robinson
runs a streak, so throw the ball with your finger
pressing up on the analog. Make sure that it is a
lob pass, and move Hasselback a little to the right
of the pocket before you throw it when Robinson is
running at the 25. For Jackson, you need to do the
complete opposite. Move slightly to the left, and
wait until he is on the 25. Throw a bullet and
press upon the analog stick. This will complete
a beautiful pass to him.
On Play #3, let Mili step right in front of the ring
and then throw a little bullet. This is the easiest
pass of the game. For Jackson, let Jackson take
three steps after he makes his post, and throw a
fast bullet. Make sure that you move Hasselback a
few steps (2-3) to the left so you are lined up
better with the ring. For the gold, line Hasselback
right on the right side of the logo on the 50 right
where the hawk nose starts. Wait for Robinson
to take two steps on his out, and then throw a
bullet while having your finger pressed up on the
analog stick.
Overall, this challenge is a bit hard to get gold
until you get down my tips. Then you should be able
to complete it perfectly without missing a target
or dropping a catch. Don't worry if this takes you
10 minutes to get gold, it is the hardest Pro
Challenge.

Challenge Name: RB - Ground Attack (Pro)
Team: Washington Redskins
Location: Washington, D.C.
Personal Best: 1960 Points
Game Situation: Locked (Once You Win, It'll Be Unlocked)
Skill: Pro
Description: -Score as many TDs as you can
-Hold down X to sprint
-To spin press Circle
-To stiff arm press L2 or R2
Trophies: Bronze - 750 points
Silver - 1300 points
Gold - 1900 points
Rewards: #195 - Human Plow
Personal Strategy: This challenge is a lot harder than the rookie
challenge of Ground Attack, but should still be done
after five tries. There are three guys to tackle
you this time, and Portis seems to get tired real
fast on the runs. Make sure that you run out of
bounds everytime that you aren't going to score a
touchdown. You need to control both Portis and
the fullback by using playmaker. Once you knock
one guy down, send the fullback to block the other
guys while Portis runs right by the guy whos knocked
down. You can't take too long though, because the
guy will get back up. This challenge takes a little
practice, but it won't be that hard to complete.

===========================================
This is the section of my guide which will seperate any other Madden guide from
this one. I'm going to play with every team in multiple game situations and
find the pros/cons about each team. The teams that I use a lot will be a bit
deeper than the ones I don't, but look for every team to have its own section
very soon. Until then, please look around on the other parts of my guide.

Section: 15
Name: Frequently Asked Questions
Last Updated: 8/19/04
===========================================
I get tons of e-mails a day asking the same questions over and over, and while
I like responding to all the e-mails I get, it becomes a bit tiresome to write
the same thing over and over again. Here I have a listed a ton of personal and
game questions that I get all the time.
Question: How old are you? Where are you from?
Answer: I'm 19, and I'm from California.
Question: What level EA Sports Gamer Are You?
Answer: 103 at the moment :)
Question: In your opinion, what is the best team in the game?
Answer: Well, it all depends on what you like. I can play good defense with
any team, so I tend to like high offensive teams that fit my style. I always
like playing with the Minnesota Vikings, but the Baltimore Ravens are also a
fun team to use in the game.
Question: Who is the best RB in the game in your opinion?
Answer: I think that LT is the best in the game, followed by Portis.
Question: When are you going to update the guide again?
Answer: I try to update this guide 3 times a week, but I'm very busy with
other things that postpone me from doing that most of the time.
Question: Where can I find the most updated version of the guide?
Answer: Either Sunday Sports Report (my site) (www.sundaysportsreport.com) or
www.gamefaqs.com
Question: Can you help me with my fantasy football, baseball, basketball team?
Answer: Yes, I have a whole website dedicated to fantasy sports. I make draft
kits for $10.00 per kit, for anyone that is interested.
Question: How much money do you make on this guide?
Answer: Last time I checked, I haven't received a penny for this. I'm looking
to work for a videogame company, so hopefully someone will read this and hire
me :)...if you feel bad for all this work I do for free, you could always
donate a little money to me. E-mail me if you would like to do that.
Question: Why don't you respond to me when I instant message you?
Answer: I keep my AIM on all the time, so half the time I'm not there. I'm
not ignoring you, I just leave my computer a lot. It's always good to first IM
me, but e-mail me if you have an important message because I will always
respond to your e-mail within 24 hours.
Question: What's better, Madden 2005 or ESPN Footall 2K5?
Answer: Do you even have to ask? Madden 2005 is the best football game ever.
Question: Are you going to make a guide for this (upcoming) game?
Answer: My goal is to write quality guides for every quality sports game that
comes out. That means all EA Sports games, most of the Midway games, and a few
other games that might sneak out that people might not hear about.
Question: Do you want to play on my Online Tournament?
Answer: I hate playing online, due to the lag I get. Even when I'm on a T1
Connection, I lag just enough that I can't do what I do when I'm playing a
person next to me. If you are interested in playing in one of my tournaments
and you live in the Bay Area, you can contact me for further information.
Question: Who do you hate playing with the most in the game?
Answer: Detroit Lions...the only team that I lost with so far :(
Question: Will you work for my website? We can pay you a money.
Answer: SURE!!! :)

sent directly to me or help online. Have a huge tournament coming up and need
some extra help? I'll be there to assist. Need some new tips and strategies?
Don't worry, I have tons of tricks upmy sleeve!

If that's not enough, you'll get coverage to all my Madden guide updates before
the public gets it. This means behind the scene looks into what's going on for
the guide.
And finally, a community of people that are huge fans of either Madden or
fantasy football. Finally chat with people who share the common hobbies that
you do.

cheaper fee. Make sure that you get a hold of this offer when it's here,
because I'm only taking a select number of people. If you are interested about
this offer, or have any additional questions, feel free to e-mail me at:

Many people wonder what other guides I have made around the web. Well, all of
them can be found at GameFAQS (www.gamefaqs.com). Also, people wonder if I
make money off of these guides. I do it as a hobby, as I am majoring in
journalism and hope to do something similiar to this for a job. Any job
opportunities make me happy :). Anyway, onto the list. Though the list is
short, don't expect it to be that way in the near future.
