Introduction
------------

This FAQ is designed to help you identify and complete the challenges
littered throughout the City Trial mode in Kirby's Air Ride.  The list
below contains a translation of each of the 120 challenges which are
normally laid out on a grid in the Records menu [City Trial-> Records (4th
option)-> Clear Check (2nd option)].  Although the challenges are the
same for everybody, the layout of the grid is randomized when you start
a new game.  This is why I have arranged the goals by track.

I've assigned numbers to the goals below arbitrarily: they have no in-game
equivalent.  They simply serve to organize them more clearly in this list.
I've also tried to put similar challenges next to each other.

I hope to include some strategies for the particularly tough goals in a future
version.

Please check out the Key before diving in.  Enjoy!

Explanation of the Clear Check System/The Grid:
-----------------------------------------------

Take a look at the grid, found by selecting Clear Check in the Records menu
[City Trial-> Records (4th option)-> Clear Check (2nd option)].  Each square
on the grid represents a challenge.  There are 10 rows and 12 columns, so
there are 120 challenges.

When you start the game, the grid is empty.  You can move the cursor around
the grid, but you will be unable to read any of the challenges.  As soon as
you complete a challenge, it will fill in the corresponding square on your
grid, which will allow you to see other challenges.  When a square is filled
in, it affects the surrounding squares in the following way:

[-] = Completely Blank square
[g] = Grey square (readable goal)
[X] = Filled in square (red, green, or purple, see below)

If the center of this 3x3 mini-grid gets filled in (the goal is completed)...

[-][-][-]
[-][-][-]
[-][-][-]

..it will change to this.

[-][g][-]
[g][X][g]
[-][g][-]

Thus you can read the grid squares that directly touch the one you filled in.
This is the manner you are supposed to go about discovering and completing
challenges.  However, if you can't read Japanese, you have to either guess
at the meanings (which works pretty well for the ones that show lap times), or
use a list such as this one.  In the case of using this list, understanding
the grid will really only help you find where you want to put the purple
squares--the rest of completing the challenges will be up to you.

Green squares on the grid indicate a completed challenge.

Red squares also indicate a completed challenge, but only red squares give
prizes when filled in.  Without knowing previously (from a friend or this
guide), there's no way to tell if completing a challenge will unlock something
until you do it.

Purple squares are awarded as prizes ("1 Free Check") and will rest in the
sidebar until you choose to use them.  If you highlight them and press the
A button, and answer yes to the question that follows (the left and default
option), you can then choose a challenge to automatically complete for free
by dropping the purple square onto the grid.

If you don't know Japanese or kana at all, the only way to tell what the
challenge is that you're clearing (provided that the square is even grayed
in) is to try to look at the numbers on it if there are any, or to learn
to recognize the course names, which are written in katakana.

NOTE:  You can not drop the purple square onto the "Clear 100 challenges"
block.  Sneaky jerks.

Also, I highly recommend not messing with the memory card while using purple
blocks to try to cheat and see if you unlock anything.  They implemented
the saving carefully, and it will try to save before it shows you the square.
If you pull the card out at the wrong time, you risk data loss.

Once you fill in the whole grid, it will change to gold and flash some
Japanese Characters (Kanji) at you.  Any squares you put purples on will
remain purple until you complete those challenges.

Key to Reading the List:
------------------------

A "-" after the goal number indicates the square is green when completed.
A "*" after the goal number indicates the square is red when completed.
A "?" means I haven't completed the goal yet, so I'm not sure of the color.

Stadium is the second menu option under City Trial (below "Game Start").

Drive is the third menu option under City Trial (below "Game Start" and
"Stadium").

The power-up icons/panels are translated below.  This is how they are listed
in the pause screen (once you unlock the power-up display) as well between the
City phase and the Stadium phase in a City Trial match:

Japanese       English            Icon/Panel
-------------------------------------------------------
Kasoku         Acceleration       Purple Double-chevron
Saikousoku     Top Speed          Lt. Blue Comet
Senkai         Turning            Green Circular Arrow
Chyaaji        Charge             Yellow Battery
Hikou          Flying             White Wings
Omosa          Weight             Brown 1-ton Weight
Kougeki        Attack             Orange "Blast"
Bougyo         Defense            Blue Shield
Tairyoku       Strength/Health    Pink Heart

The goals for City Trial are divided arbitrarily into several categories.
Once you get used to the categories, they should make it easier to look up the
goal you're searching for.

The goals for Stadium are divided into categories for the events that they
must be completed in.  The numbers next to the category headings match the
numbers for the events in the Stadium listing (City Trial-> Stadium [2nd
option]), so this can also be useful as a translation guide for the Stadium
menu.

General Hints for Completing Challenges
---------------------------------------

-For all of the challenges, at least as far as I can tell, you can alter the
rules and difficulty settings as much as you want, and do them against any mix
of 1 - 3 human/CPU opponents.  If you're having trouble with a certain
challenge, it may be helpful to go up against only 1 CPU Level 1 opponent.

-You can complete the Stadium challenges either by selecting them in Stadium
mode, or by playing them at the end of the time limit in City Trial.
Sometimes it may be easier to acheive a goal after getting lots of power ups
in the City Trial (e.g. the Air Glide mode 400m record is easy with the Wing
Star and lots of Flying power-ups).  However, some goals (like Point Strike
high-scores or defeating Dedede within 1 minute) are easier to achieve by
playing over and over in Stadium mode.

-There are 3 parts to each of the hidden vehicles, the Dragon and the Hydra.
If you get all three parts in one set, then you will complete the vehicle and
get to use it for the rest of the City Trial match (including the Stadium
phase).  This process is not to be confused with unlocking the parts on the
grid; when you complete each of the three challenges per vehicle that give you
a part (Dragon Parts A, B, and C or Hydra Parts X, Y, and Z), then you will
complete a separate challenge that unlocks the vehicle in Drive mode.

-There are several kinds of Events that occur during the City phase of City
Trial (fires breaking out, a giant rock dropping from the sky, etc.).  Some
of the challenges are based on doing a task during one of these Events.
There is no way that I know of to predict what Events will happen during the
City phase, so be patient and keep playing until you get them!

-Challenges such as "Break over 500 containers total" and "Drive for over 10
minutes total" are based on running totals that update each time you play.
Don't worry, you don't have to play the Drive mode for 2 hours in one sitting!
Also, for Stadium challenges that are prefaced by things such as "Battle
Royale (All)" or "Deathmatch (All)" are based on running totals across all
the aforementioned modes (e.g. Battle Royale 1 and 2, or Deatmatch 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5).

-For the "Get 10 -x- powerups in one match" challenges, the gray/negative
powerups don't count against your goal.  If you get 2 gray Weight panels
and 10 brown ones, even though your Weight statistic will be 8, you will
still complete the objective.
