-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS GUIDE CONTAINS MAJOR GAME SPOILERS... in the form of game script and very
specific descriptions of some game cut-scenes.  For the convenience of players
wanting to keep plot surprises intact, all cut-scenes--even the career-specific
ones--have been compacted into PART FOUR-D:  CHILD-RELATED CUT-SCENES.

This is NOT a “how do I make my son a/an artist / athlete / farmer / musician /
rancher / scholar?” guide.  This is NOT a “how do I make my son neglected /
happy / mischievous / spoiled” guide.  If you’re looking for that information,
you can find it in several FAQ/Walkthroughs at GameFaqs, in Nekoko’s fine Child
FAQ at GameFaqs, and also at HMOtaku.net.

Most people know that an FAQ contains answers to ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.
I like to think of this guide as an ‘FRP’ to Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.
In this case, FRP is an acronym for ‘Frequently Reported Patterns.’  This
progress guide contains a list of child quotes, behaviors, books, diary
entries, and cut-scenes.  Some of these are documented to be universal to all
children while others are very career-specific.

The author and contributors to his guide have attempted to sort the information
by career in the hopes of forming a stereotypical child for each career.  In
other words, what might an artistic child say?  What may a scholarly child
write in his diary?  What books might a farming child have?

This document is intended only as a comprehensive guideline: comparing your
son’s words and actions to this guide may help you to gauge his career progress
chapter-by-chapter.  Then again, it may not.  ^_^ Please see “P1-A:Section 5.
Please Bear in Mind” for more details.

This guide is geared towards all players in Chapter 2 and later, but primarily
those looking to raise a farmer or rancher.  Without offering specific
spoilers, raising a rancher or farmer child yields the happiest ending to
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.  Not only that, but also (1) the farmer/rancher
careers are the easiest to gauge progress in (2) more contributing players have
been striving for a farmer/rancher child, and (as a result) (3) more
information has been discovered in farming/ranching than in the other careers
combined.

That said, this guide will be most useful to you if (1) you have selected a
career for your child (2) you know how to and have been actively encouraging
that career (3) you know which chapter you’re in ^_^ and finally (4) you take
the time to read the entire PART ONE section.  It really is the most important
part of this guide.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me tell you the legend of the “Getting your Child to Stay **SPOILERS**”
thread.  Once upon a time, there was a thread on the GameFaqs HM:AWL Message
Board; a thread which started as a few seemingly innocent questions from
LostArtofRock.  Fortunately for all members, it ended up evolving into the
central area for discussions about HM:AWL children from June 16, 2004 to until
its unfortunate locking (due to post volume) on July 25, 2004.  It--combined
with the threads that have been spawned for further discussion--continue to
serve as an ongoing education centre for players exploring the details of
raising career-focused children.  I hope there will always be a thread for this
purpose...

This guide was created to honor that thread, and as a compilation of child
quotes and documented behavior (many of which have appeared in LostArtofRock’s
original thread).  Discussions in that thread have revealed that a child’s
words, behavior, books, and cut-scenes seem to be related to his career
interest.  Based on this premise, the author, Research Team, and Official
Research Agents of this guide have attempted to sort the information by career
in the hopes of forming a ‘stereotypical’ child outline for each career.

Most importantly, THIS IS NOT A “HOW TO RAISE YOUR SON” GUIDE.

This guide is based almost entirely on the in-game experience of more than
sixty GameFaqs players.  This is a double-edged sword.

The not so good news is...

(1)  THIS GUIDE IS BASED ON PLAYER EXPERIENCE ONLY AND IS NOT ENDORSED BY THE
DEVELOPERS AND/OR DISTRIBUTORS.
Although the direct quotes, documented behavior, books, and diary entries ARE
authentic and DO appear in the game, it is impossible to guarantee that any one
quote is directly associated with the career as categorized in this guide.  For
this reason, the contributors, compiler, and author of this guide are
completely absolved of blame in the event of a gaming disappointment.

(2)  THIS GUIDE IS BY NO MEANS COMPLETE.
This guide contains only the incidents that have been reported to the author.
This guide cannot possibly contain all incidents ever experienced by players of
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.  Submissions are welcome, and will help to make
this guide more useful for everyone.  Please see “P5:Section 3.  Got a
Submission?” for more details about how you can join the research team.

(2)  THE CONCLUSIONS IN THIS GUIDE ARE BASED ON PLAYER ANALYSIS AND PLAYER
EXPERIENCE AND ARE LARGELY UNGUARANTEED.
This is especially crucial in understanding that some child quotes / behaviors
/ books / diary entries are turning out to be completely universal.  Others are
largely undetermined and some may end up classified as career-specific due to a
lack of further confirmation.  Only with a wider base of player contribution
can this be determined.  Please see “P5:Section 3.  Got a Submission?” for more
details about how you can join the research team.

The good news is...

(1)  THE INFORMATION IN THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY REAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE
PLAYED THE GAME.
Although it is impossible to guarantee that any one quote is directly
associated with the career as categorized in this guide, it can be said that
the direct quotes, documented behavior, books, and diary entries ARE authentic
and DO appear in the game.  This guide contains the combined in-game experience
of more than sixty GameFaqs members who HAVE played the game.  More experienced
players can vouch that the patterns are predictable enough to make this guide
at least somewhat useful.

(2)  THIS GUIDE IS BY NO MEANS COMPLETE.
Submissions are welcome, and will help to make this guide more useful for
everyone.    Please see “P5:Section 3.  Got a Submission?” for more details
about how you can join the research team.

For purposes of clarity, here is a description of the demographic of
individuals who have contributed their time, effort, and patience to make this
guide useful:

+  A lot of the information in this guide has been contributed by players who
have been actively encouraging a particular career path.  These players have
confirmed their child’s interest by reporting several quotes / behaviors /
books / cut-scenes obviously related to that specific career.

+  Some responses have been contributed by players who have been actively—but
inconsistently—encouraging their children.  Often these players are encouraging
more than one career throughout the game, either deliberately or (more
frequently) accidentally.  In this case, it can be difficult to conclude to
which career that the information reported is connected.

+  Very few responses have been contributed by players who have undirected
children.

For your convenience (and accuracy), the undetermined/heavily-debated incidents
are listed in “PART FOUR: MISCELLANY.”  A complete list of contributors is
available in “PART FIVE:  GRATITUDE.”

Here are some expressions that are used from time to time in this guide.  For
purposes of clarity, they are used to infer specific meanings as described
below:

“actively encouraged”
describes a child who has been encouraged by a parent who shows/gives items,
makes specific friends, takes him on outings, answers his questions, and sets a
good example.

“after taking a _____”
In regards to Chapter 3, the quotes associated with this term are collected
after the child has taken a gift and put it into his pocket.

“*AH*”
That very surprised/happy sound your toddler makes in Chapter 2.

“*moan*”
That very melancholy sound your child makes in Chapter 3.

“possibly paraphrased”
The individual that reported this quote did not write it down at the time.  It
may not be the exact quote from the game text, however the meaning will be very
similar.  If you can report the direct game quote, please see “P5:Section 3.
Got a Submission?” for more details about how you can join the research team.

“redirect”
Any activity that reduces interest in a career area.  For example, the
redirecting answers to “Do you tink aminals are cute” (ranching) are “no” and
“you’re cuter.”  The child’s interest in ranching is reduced.

“reinforcing answer”
Any activity that increases interest in a career area.  For example, the
reinforcing answer to “Do you tink aminals are cute” (ranching) is “yes”.  The
child’s interest in ranching is reinforced.

“traditional produce”
Any produce which resembles a reality-based fruit of vegetable.  For example,
any produce from first generation trees/crops, most produce from second
generation trees/crops, and a few produce items from third generation
tree/crops.  Third generation trees/crops which resemble non-food items (light
bulbs, cymbals, jingle bells, etc.) are not traditional produce.

“undirected child”
describes a child who has not been actively encouraged to pursue any career.
Undirected children form their own interests and select their own career--some
children are more likely to pursue some careers than others.  It can be
difficult to connect a quote with a specific career, but for the most part it’s
pretty predictable in Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.

“unfriend”
with –ed or –ing.  Describes the act of offering gifts to townspeople and
refusing to give that gift; results in reversing a friendship.  Can be very
time consuming, but is convenient for reducing influences on the child,
especially after befriending a townsperson to receive tool / special gift.
Unfriending some particular characters has been attempted at great length, but
to no avail.  It seems that friendship is irreversible with some characters
(Daryl) but not with others (Hardy).

“when offered a _____”
In regards to Chapter 3, the quotes associated with this term are collected
while attempting to give a gift to the child.

“when shown a _____”
(1) In regards to Chapter 2, this describes the activity of lifting an object /
animal and showing it to the child.  Not to be confused with “when shown TO a
_____”
(2)  In regards to Chapter 3, the same meaning applies, but the quotes
associated with this term are collected after the child has already received
the maximum number of gifts for that day.

“when shown to a _____”
describes the Chapter 2 activity of lifting your son and showing him to the
object / animal.  Not to be confused with “when shown a _____”

“*WOH*”
That very excited/enthralled sound your child makes in Chapters 2 & 3.

As time elapses between the playable game chapters, many game characters mature
and age--your child is no exception.  Here is a chapter-by-chapter breakdown
that describes how the aging process affects your in-game child, and how you
can use each stage to best advantage when manipulating his career:

CHAPTER 2.  TODDLER EXTRAORDINAIRE

Ah, the cuddly peanut years.  Here your son is at his absolutely youngest and
most consistently happy life stage.  Simple things like getting picked up /
thrown / cuddled / sung to make his day.  He’ll speak about the weather,
Mukumuku, non-existent relatives, and even quote Murrey.  He may ask questions
that encourage you to reinforce / redirect his interest, but not necessarily.

He’s hand-held, which makes for easy carrying and simple introductions to
townspeople representing your chosen career.  Simply hold him and speak to a
person to trigger his/her reaction.  Do this at least once a day to encourage
friendships for later in the game.

Your son is also conveniently self-guiding, which makes for very convenient
delivery and drop-off at the houses of townspeople representing your chosen
career.  Here’s a great tip:  Lift your son and carry him to the house of a
career-influencing townsperson.  Put your son down, whistle for your horse.
Ride the horse home.  No matter how far away he is he’ll always find his way
home.  Do this at least once a day to encourage his career interest--and
although he does return home, you’ll find that when he’s older he’ll take the
initiative to walk there himself.

Although he is too young to receive gifts, in Chapter 2 he’s open to look at
anything you show him.  His reaction may identify any interest he may have.
Showing career-consistent gifts through Chapter 2 leads to more frequent
spontaneous questions (in most reported cases).

His emotional range in Chapter 2 is limited to happy, upset, and sleepy faces.
His sound effects are awe (*WOH*), joy (*AH!*), and misery (*WAHHH!*).

CHAPTER 3.  CURIOUS CHILD

Less peanut, more munchkin.  Your son has a much more developed vocabulary, and
now readily displays different levels of happiness.  He still comments on the
weather, but also shows an awareness of and interest in people outside of his
family, especially in the early part of this chapter.  As the chapter
progresses (and as you influence consistently) he’ll narrow his name-dropping
to fewer people.  He’s also self-aware.

Although he’s too big to be carried (and he’ll tell you so), he’s more than
happy to accept all kinds of gifts (provided he has enough interest in that
area).  He will accept up to two gifts per day throughout the three years of
this chapter; there is no evidence to suggest that he can be spoiled by too
many gifts, so give generously and fearlessly.  Anything offered after the two
gifts will be greeted with a commentary that indicates interest/disinterest as
is appropriate.  His choice of gifts in Chapter 3 seems to reflect his career
interest (rather than any genetic connections with his mother).

Depending on how frequently / far you forced him to venture in Chapter 2, in
Chapter 3 he’ll begin making his own explorations.

He’s much more dynamic and mature.  In Chapter 3 his faces include happy and
sad.  His sound effects are awe (*WOH*), mischief (*GIGGLE*), and misery
(*MOAN*).

CHAPTER 4.  AUTHORITY-CHALLENGING TEENAGER

He’s rebellious, opinionated, and blatantly condescending at times.  Some items
that he’s previously reacted positively to will now yield a rude response and a
nasty face; it doesn’t necessarily indicate disinterest--just a rude
adolescent.  For this reason, the Chapter 4 son seems very difficult to
interpret.

He will continue to accept gifts, but in Chapter 4 will only accept gifts
predetermined by genetics--regardless of career interest.  For example, every
player with Celia’s son will find that he’ll accept only Brown Milk, Apples,
and Eggs.  Nothing else.  It doesn’t seem to matter what career--it's all about
Mom in Chapter 4.  His gift rejections are even terribly contradictory.  Morrie
reports successfully giving Celia’s son two eggs in one day, then with the
third egg offer witnessing alternating statements of “I don’t want that” And
“Did you know that was my favourite?”  Oy.

He’s more pensive than ever.  His Chapter 4 faces are happy, sad, frustrated,
and a downright sneer.  His only sound effect seems to be a breathy sigh
(*SIGH*).

CHAPTERS 5 & 6.  ADULT

He’s his own person.  He’s less volatile and condescending than he is as a
teenager.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some players who have contributed to this guide and successfully influenced a
child to one career path attribute their success to the following principles:

PRINCIPLE #1:     ENCOURAGE YOUR SON

Even if you have your heart set on one career for your son, it is often
unlikely that he’ll become that professional unless you actively encourage him
starting in Chapter 2 and continue consistently through the length of the game.
To encourage him you must:

(1)  Nurture friendships with game characters who are engaged in the career
(2)  Take him to locations which relate to the career (Chapter 2 only)
(3)  Show/give items that relate to the career
(4)  Answer his questions in ways which encourage the career
(5)  Set an example by engaging in activities in ways that encourage the
career*

Numbers (1) to (4) are pretty clear, but (5) bears mentioning in some specific
examples:
(a)  Cows can be milked in three ways: by hand, by hand-held milker, by milking
room.  Choose the method that best encourages the career you’ve selected.
(b)  Long distance traveling can be done in two ways: by foot, by horseback.
Choose the method that best encourages the career you’ve selected.

PRINCIPLE #2.     BE CONSISTENT IN ENCOURAGING ONE CAREER ONLY

The players who have contributed to this guide have learned that the key to
raising your child for a specific career is CONSISTENCY.  Even if he’s
demonstrating promise as a farmer based on his words during Chapter 2,
interests seem to come and go as he ages, and in some cases are affected by how
much time YOU spend doing an activity to complete another facet of the game.
How much time you spend at the dig site, for example, has been reported (by
Jumalacca and others) as something that can affect your son’s interests.
Whether or not it has the potential to affect the outcome of the game is still
unknown.

More importantly, if you’d like his only career choice to be rancher, you have
NO business offering him music sheets, butter/cheese, athletic medals, moon
ore, skull fossils, sculptures or anything else that isn’t related to animals.
If he doesn’t take the gifts you’re offering, don’t experiment to see what he
WILL take (unless you’re resetting).  Be consistent.

There’s a finite amount of time in the game; sleeping through days, seasons, or
even years without paying attention to your son significantly reduces your
opportunities for and success in influencing.  Since the game is always moving
forward in time, take advantage of every day.  Start influencing as early in
Chapter 2 as possible in order to allow yourself more time not only to
influence, but also to discourage other areas.  If he receives no direction
from you he’ll develop his own interests, and by the time you’re aware of them
your opportunities to redirect his focus will be fewer (reducing your chance of
success).

In summary?  Reinforcing his interest early, steadily, and consistently through
all the chapters of the game improves your chances of directing his career.

PRINCIPLE #3.     BE PREPARED FOR SOME DEVIATION

A child’s interests are never black and white, but shades of gray.  He can be
interested in more than one thing at one time and to different degrees.  In
fact, unless you’re raising a farmer and / or a rancher, it is extremely
unlikely that your son will be interested in JUST ONE CAREER, regardless of
which girl spawned him.

Consider this: if you are making any money through your farm it’s the result of
doing activities... (planting / watering / harvesting crops, cuddling / feeding
/ brushing / milking cows)... which will influence his interests.  Even if
you’re trying to avoid making money from the farm (for an extreme approach to
the musician, artist, scholar careers), you’re probably riding your horse
(rancher) or walking (athlete) when you do leave the farm.  And even if you’re
walking on purpose (athlete) you’re probably still keeping your farm
operational for the most popular gifts (produce / animal products) in order to
maintain friendships.

It’s important to note that all of the career profiles in this guide represent
perfect stereotypes.  In reality, there is no child that will behave exactly as
described in this guide.  So be a little bit flexible.  Don’t freak out if your
son says a few things that identify a different career, if he has a book that
doesn’t fit the picture, or if he makes comments about a person unrelated to
his intended career.  Keep things in focus; it’s another reason why CONSISTENCY
is so important.  Revisit principles #1 and #2.

PRINCIPLE #4.     KEEP AN EYE ON HISTORY

Several players that have contributed to this guide have learned that although
it seems possible to continue influencing your child beyond Chapter 2, there is
no denying that his two toddler years are the MOST IMPORTANT part of the game
for building his interest--and it is the only time of the game you can ever
control whose house he visits (a key factor in achieving any career that isn’t
farm-related).  Keep this in mind:

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
ALTHOUGH A CHILD APPEARS TO LOSE INTERESTS AND GAIN NEW ONES AS HE AGES AND THE
GAME PROGRESSES, THE END OF CHAPTER CUT-SCENES SEEM TO CONSISTENTLY FORESHADOW
A CAREER THAT YOUR SON MAY PICK AT THE GAME’S FINALE.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Not once has a player reported witnessing an ending that wasn’t foreshadowed by
at least one cut-scene, but most players report seeing at least two different
career cut-scenes throughout the chapters.

Some cut-scenes offer an opportunity to reinforce / redirect a child’s
interest.  So, with that in mind understand that the choices you make--whether
you influence Junior in Chapter 2 or not, which career you encourage, and how
you answer questions in cut-scenes--will probably come back to bite you at the
end of the game.  That’s not to say that after seeing the rancher cut-scene at
the end of Chapter 2 you can live the rest of your life digging at the ruins
without turning him into a scholar.

But then again... stranger things have happened.  Luckygirl777
(HotHarvestMoonFan) reports influencing nothing in Chapter 2 and seeing two
consecutive artist cut-scenes (Chapter 2 & 3).  She encouraged art all through
Chapter 3, then in Chapter 4 she felt he’d be fine and left him alone for the
rest of the game.  The result?  He became a rancher.  Again, CONSISTENCY seems
very important.

With the size of the disclaimer and the constant ‘no guarantees’ reminders in
this guide, I’m sure you’re wondering why it was written at all.  Please read
on...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P1-B:Section 3.  F I L T E R   O U T   T H E   O T H E R   S T U F F
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every virtual child has the wonderful ability to communicate to a father what
career(s) he is interested in.  But to an untrained eye, every child is
incoherent, inconsistent, and seemingly interested in everything and everybody-
-including Murrey.  To the unpracticed observer, every child changes his mind
faster than one can say, “Mukumuku!”

So how do you tell what career he’s interested in?  Here are some guidelines
that will help you filter out the irrelevant information:

WHAT NOT TO LOOK FOR:

(1)  CANNED BABBLE, ESPECIALLY AT THE BEGINNING OF CHAPTER 3.
Any time you walk up to your son and he makes an out-of-the-blue statement
you’re probably hearing ‘canned babble’--thanks to LostArtofRock for coining
this term.  Children are initially scripted with an estimated hundred general
comments.  In the early part of the chapter he will say all of them, but as his
interests become more focused his list becomes shorter and more specific—a
child that has very high interest in a specific area might say as few as three
different lines.  That said, the farther you are in the game and the more
specific your influencing, the shorter and more specific his dialogue.

Although some canned babble can indicate a career, early in the game most of it
concerns unrelated things like the weather, diapers, non-existent relatives,
and your wife.  It can also be expressed during particular activities such as
using a toy, being held, and while sleeping.

If you spend a game hour or two just prodding your son for intelligent
sentences in early Chapter 3, chances are he’ll say at least five of the vacant
ones you’ll find in “P4-B:Section 1. Canned Quotes”.  About 99% of these
statements are generally not good indicators of career progress, especially if
you (1) have not been influencing your son at all or (2) you’re in the first
year of the chapter.

NOTE:  If child says one statement very frequently, it’s likely indication of
career interest.  Some repeated statements can be reactions to questions that
your child has asked earlier.  Reactions to questions--even if repeated
spontaneously for the rest of the day--are NOT considered canned babble. For
example, in Chapter 2 the question “Do you tink aminals awe cute?” can become
the statement “Aminals are cute” for the remainder of the day.  In Chapter 3,
“Is farm work fun?” can become “Animals are so cute.” For the rest of the day.
Please be mindful of these incidents, as they ARE a significant indication of
career interest.

(2)  PROGRAMMED BEHAVOUR.
There are some physical activities that all children do faithfully or just from
time to time.  Some of these are very particular to age groups or location.
These behaviors do not constitute imitations of townspeople and are not
connected to any careers.  Please see “P4-B:Section 2. Programmed Behavior” for
some specific examples.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P1-B:Section 4.  S I G N S
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These seem to be the most predictable and successful ways to measure career
interest when practiced daily.  Conveniently, some of these incidents offer an
opportunity to learn what his interests are AND reinforce / redirect them.

(1)  OBSERVE HIS QUESTIONS.
A child interested in a particular career will ask specific questions out-of-
the-blue, and allow you a choice of answers.  These incidents not only tell you
a career he’s very interested in, but also give you an opportunity to reinforce
/ redirect his interest by selecting an appropriate answer.  “Do you tink
aminals awe cute?” is a good example.

(2)  OBSERVE HIS REACTIONS TO ITEMS.
A child that really likes an item you show him will often ask for it outright.
Some items seem to be requested by all children no matter what their interests;
milk and eggs are prime examples.  Other items are associated with one
particular career and will be requested only if the child has some interest in
that area; seeds (farming) and fossils (scholar) are examples.  Children
without enough interest will show confusion or disinterest.  “It’s a _____.
What about it?” is an example.

(3)  OBSERVE HIS REACTIONS AFTER RECEIVING AN ITEM.
A child that takes an item will often tack on another comment on the subject,
or ask another question. These incidents also tell you a career he’s very
interested in.  The question, of course, gives you another opportunity to
reinforce / redirect his interest.  For example, after taking an egg, “Can you
tell which ones will hatch and which won’t?” shows interest in ranching.

(4)  OBSERVE HIS END OF CHAPTER CUT-SCENES.
Again, the cut-scenes are also a good clue as to his current career interest.
(It has never been reported that a child has picked a career without seeing at
least one related cut-scene).  And again, many cut-scenes are career-specific
and offer an opportunity to reinforce / redirect his interest by answering a
question posed by your wife.  These cut-scenes can also help you confirm that
you’ve been influencing in a consistent way, and give you a chance to correct
it if you haven’t.  From there you can reevaluate your pasts strategies and
change them for the future.

Again, methods 1 to 3 are most accurate and successful when practiced daily.

MINOR DETAILS AND SOME SPECULATION ABOUT GAME MYTHS

The following factors have been frequently touted as indicating a career.
Although they can be helpful at times, in my experience they have been much
less helpful than the methods listed above.

Some of these items (such as books, diary entries, behaviors, and room items)
are turning out to be completely universal to particular game chapters.  They
should be considered ‘supporting evidence’, and not the nails you hang your
entire conclusions on:

(1)  SOME OF THE THINGS HE SAYS.
If child says one statement very frequently, it’s likely indication of career
interest--provided that it’s obviously connected to a career (NOTE: Murrey and
quotes are not career-related).  Some repeated statements can be reactions to
questions that your child has asked earlier.  Reactions to questions--even if
repeated spontaneously for the rest of the day--are NOT considered canned
babble. For example, in Chapter 2 the question “Do you tink aminals awe cute?”
can become the statement “Aminals are cute” for the remainder of the day.  In
Chapter 3, “Is farm work fun?” can become “Animals are so cute.” for the rest
of the day.  Please be mindful of these incidents, as they ARE a significant
indication of career interest.

In addition, some of the statements about townspeople are worth noticing.
Although at the beginning of Chapter 3 he may cover all the villagers in town,
as you continue to influence him and progress through the game he will speak of
fewer people and say more or less the same few sentences throughout one day.  A
farming child, for example, may rotate “Vesta looks very dependable!”  “Plants
are interesting”  “I wonder if Vesta’s field has grasshoppers.”  “Sometimes I
wonder if Marlin resembles Takakura.”  He may still mention other people, but
the bulk of his statements will concern his most dominant career interest.

(2)  SOME DIARY ENTRIES.
The spy entry, for example, is not related to a real career but a reflection of
the father-son bond.  However, the entries about specific careers (or people)
tend to be a pretty accurate demonstration of interest.  “I think our farm is
better when it has lots of animals” clearly indicates ranching.

(3)  SOME OF THE PLACES HE VISITS.
Any child, regardless of interest in farming/ranching will spend some time
hanging around at the farm.  He lives on a farm, afterall.  He may even go into
the buildings from time to time.  It doesn’t conclude that he necessarily has
significant interest as a farmer/rancher.  If he leaves the farm, though, his
destination is a pretty good indication of what career he’s interested in.
Obviously, going to Gustafa’s tent one day out of a year has different
implications than visiting Gustafa’s tent every day for three years.  And most
Chapter 3 children like to hang around the cluster of boulders south of Vesta’s
farm; it’s suspected to be universal.

(4)  SOME OF THE BOOKS IN HIS BOOKSHELF.
“I Love Pets!” and “Plants by the Sea” have very specific career connections;
those and other books with career connections tend to appear in the top two
(Chapter 3) or one (Chapter 4) slots of the bookshelf.  The third book,
however, seems to be universal and can change with every season during a
chapter.  “Comic Book” and “Cutter and the King” seem to be reported frequently
during Chapter 3, but other books such as “Cocktails” and “Occasions” fill the
third slot in later Chapters.  It is strongly suspected that the third slot in
the bookshelf contains a ‘canned’ book. These books demonstrate your son’s
growing maturity rather than any career interest.

(5)  SOME OF THE ITEMS IN HIS ROOM.
Although HMOtaku and general opinion state that room items indicate interest,
they have been more frequently reported as confusing and inconsistent,
especially in Chapter 3.  LostArtofRock (with two separate games), Sandy87,
romani999, AznPower, and Morrie all report identical room items at the
beginning of Chapter 3.  (In addition to the bed and trash can, these items are
(1) the statue from Tim and Ruby, (2) a pink poster over the bed, (3) two balls
at the head of the bed, (4) the old toy chest (5) some boards/metal sheets
leaning against the wall, (6) the bookcase (7) two free weights and (8) the
box/stick from the beach.)  It is suspected that all room items may be canned
in Chapter 3... but (like conversation) may become more career-related as the
game progresses, or change if you give your son ‘special’ gifts like sculptures
and paintings.

(6)  SOME OF HIS IMITATIONS.
Although ‘jogging’ seems pretty obviously related to athletics, it and many of
the other little physical quirks are not career-related (in the same way that
lying on the floor or simply sitting down are not career-related).  The fact is
if you spend a whole day watching your son he probably will do them all
(including arm-crossing), even if he isn’t interested in athletics.  It is
suspected that all physical activities that appear to be ‘imitations’ of
specific characters--including jogging--may be universal kid things and should
not be interpreted as signs of career interest.  But for the time being, the
behaviors that seem connected to careers are listed with those individual
careers.

Again, remember to allow for some deviation.  Don’t freak out if your son says
a few things that identify a different career, if he has a book that doesn’t
fit the picture, or if he makes comments about a person unrelated to his
intended career.  It might be a sign of career interest (if you’re working on
that career), but it might not be.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P1-B:Section 5.  A   S A M P L E   T E S T   F O R   C H A P T E R   3
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This serves two purposes: (1) monitor career interest in one career area and
(2) increase interest in that career area.

This is a great sample exercise for ranchers (eggs, milk), farmers (seeds), and
scholars (ore, fossils)... I apologize to players that have musical, artistic
and athletic children, as an accurate test for these careers hasn’t been
formulated yet.  Sorry.  It’s namely because of a lack of career-specific items
you can give every day.  Research continues on that front...

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This test is most accurate when performed several days in a
row with the same item.  Remember to be consistent in offering gifts that match
the career; if you don’t want him to be a scholar you have no business offering
him fossils.

You may not get career-related replies on the first try, but keep at it every
day until you do; the goal is to get as many different (but positive) career-
related quotes as possible.  You can give up to two items per day.  These items
can be identical or different.

For purposes of clarity, I’ll follow each step an example of how this test can
be applicable to a rancher child.

(1)  Offer an item that influences a career and he should say either:

“Oh, Dad! Is that?”
Multiple choice: (1)  You want it?  (2)  What?

Or

“That’s cool.  I want it.”
Multiple choice:  (1)  Take it.  (2)  Sorry son.

Give him the item.  If he doesn’t ask for it, try again with another career
item (milk).  If still no success, try again tomorrow.  After you’ve agreed to
give him an item, he should continue with either a single sentence or a follow-
up question pertaining to a particular career.  If he didn’t ask a question,
try again with another item or again tomorrow.

RANCHER EXAMPLE:  Offer an egg.  He should ask for it.  After taking it he
should also say, “Hey Dad.  Can you tell which eggs will hatch by looking at
them?”  Multiple choice:  (1)  Not a clue.  (2)  Of course I can.

(2)  Answer the follow-up question in a way that reinforces that career, and he
should reply with appropriate enthusiasm.

RANCHER EXAMPLE:  With the egg question, select “Of course I can” he’ll reply
“Really?  Wow!  You’re able to understand that?  Do you think I could learn to
do that someday?”

(3)  Show the same item again--he should say one more statement about that
item.  If not, try again with another item or again tomorrow.

RANCHER EXAMPLE:  After he’s taken an egg and sees a second one, “Did you know
that was something I really loved?  Whatever a baby bird sees first becomes
their parent.  That’s called imprinting.”

Where known, both additional comments and questions are listed under the
specific career sections in PART 2.  Your possible answers (and the best
choices) are also listed where possible.

Reported by DesertLynx, michael999516, noj11jon, mistercow, Morrie.

NOTE:  The two quotes above are especially common for players with Nami’s child
(prominent interest in art).  It is heavily-debated to be an art-related quote,
but players with successfully artistic sons report answering “no” and it not
seeming to affect interest level at all.

If your child does not react as described in this guide it may be for any
number of reasons:

(1)         WRONG CHAPTER

You may not be in the right chapter for that response.  In Chapter 2 you can
show things to him, but he will not accept gifts until Chapter 3.  And
although he is able to take gifts through to the end of the game, in Chapter 4
and later he will accept only particular gifts.  These gifts are not at all
related to career, but reflect instead his personal likes and dislikes (as
determined by who his mother is).

It’s been reported that a child will not accept more than one “special” gift
per season.  (Special gifts are unique items that you’ve received as gifts
from townspeople.  Examples include Gustafa’s Tum-Tums, Lumina’s Music Sheet,
Flora’s Necklace, and Hugh/Wally’s Medal.)

(2)         NOT INTERESTED.

Your child may not be interested enough in that career to offer that response
at this time.  (Remember that this guide contains information supplied by
individuals whose children have shown a marked interest in that career area)
Continue encouraging your child in a consistent manner.  When he is more
interested in a career he will be more likely to communicate it.

(3)         INVALID ITEM

Offering some items may not produce a reaction from your child.  Other items
are grouped into a category with other similar items: all items in this group
may produce the same reaction.  For example, your son will react the same way
no matter which variety of milk you offer him.

CHAPTER 2.

“???”
Reported by It is Me, romani999, Morrie.

In Chapter 2, your son’s response to something he isn’t interested in is
usually “? ? ?”.  Sometimes he’ll follow by asking a question pertaining to
the career that does interest him.  “???” also seems to be the default answer
for some items, regardless of the child’s interest.  The animal brush is a
good example for this reaction.

CHAPTER 3.

“What’s that?  No thanks...”  “I don’t like that” or “I don’t want it...”  “No

Reported by DesertLynx, LostArtofRock.  It is suspected that all children like
female ducks, but only children interested in ranching like male ducks.

Any game information that is unconfirmed, unclassified, downright confusing,
and the source of endless frustration for the author and contributing players.
Some of this information was previously classified as career specific, but more
recent events have revealed some incidents to be probably universal to all
players’ children, regardless of career.  Other information concerns child
happiness and its relationship to parenting style.  Further information seems
to be a complete mystery until further research reveals more structured
patterns.  Again, as with any information in this guide, it’s entirely
speculation until confirmed by more players.  Please see “P5:Section 3.  Got a
Submission?” for more details about how you can join the research team.

===============================================================================
So much of what players know about child happiness is based on individual
interpretation and theory.  At this point there are no concrete answers, but
several common observations.  Again, this is all speculation as there doesn’t
seem to be any authorities in this area; just rumors.

(1)  IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THERE MAY BE UNIQUE AND DISTINCT LEVELS OF HAPPINESS.
At any point in the game it is possible that a child can be neglected / happy /
mischievous / spoiled, and that there is a distinct (and measurable) difference
between each happiness level.  This is a very popular belief.

While “Sometimes I think people don’t like me” and “I don’t think I’ll ever be
a good boy to everyone” are associated with neglected and “If I’m a good boy
people won’t get mad at me” is associated with good, there are no confirmed
phrases which can be linked to spoiled children.  Morrie reports deliberately
spoiling her child in Chapter 3 (2 items per day every day) and never
witnessing anything other than neglected quotes; however, the frequency of the
quotes seemed to decrease in year 2, then increase again in year 3 of that
chapter.

It is also possible that (1) there may be only two happiness levels: happy and
unhappy (where unhappy encompasses both spoiled and neglected) or (2) that both
spoiled and neglected are indicated by the same game quotes or (3) that the
game developers do not punish overzealous players by allowing a child to become
spoiled.

(2)  IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HAPPINESS LEVEL IS AFFECTED BY GAMEPLAY
A player’s actions (and the amount of time spent with a child) may have a
direct affect on a child’s happiness level.  For example, it is thought that
too little attention in Chapter 2 can result in a depressed child in Chapter 3.
Similarly, too much Chapter 2 attention can lead to a spoiled child in Chapter
3.

However, the amount of attention required seems to vary from player to player.
The general Chapter 2 guideline is two play sessions of fifteen minutes each
every day.  However, some players report success with this, while others report
having neglected children.  Another player reports eight play sessions a day
resulting in a neglected child.

It is also believed that a lack of toys in Chapter 2 may lead to a neglected
child in Chapter 3.

ZERO Stryker is currently exploring several theories which may make it possible
for players to predict child happiness based on Chapter 2 behavior.  It
concerns hearts, music notes, and turning heads.  However, no conclusions or
patterns have been confirmed yet.

Again, Morrie reports deliberately spoiling her child in Chapter 3 (2 items per
day every day) and never witnessing anything other than neglected quotes.
So...

(3)   IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HAPPINESS LEVEL DOES NOT CHANGE DURING A CHAPTER, BUT
ONLY AT THE ONSET OF A NEW CHAPTER.
In other words, if a child is unhappy at the beginning of Chapter 3 it is
likely he will remain so until Chapter 4.  If personality is affected by a
player’s actions, it is possible that these actions will not have an effect on
the child until the next chapter.

The exception is definitely Chapter 2: At the start of that chapter it has been
observed that a walking child will not turn his head if you cross his path;
after interacting with him he will turn his head to indicate you are friends
with him.

(4)     IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HAPPINESS LEVEL IS RANDOMLY DETERMINED BY THE GAME
FOR EACH CHAPTER.
This remains a possibility.

Research continues on this front...

Many of these have been reported with different children, different career
interests, and different friendship / social situations, so they can’t really
be anything but universal.  If any player talks to a child for an in-game hour
or two, chances are the boy will spout these lines even if the player isn’t
friends with townspeople mentioned, has unfriended those townspeople, or has
never even spoken to those townspeople.  Hence, “Canned Babble”.  (Thanks to
LostArtofRock for coining this term.)  ^_^

Again, these lines are filler and are NOT indicative of any one career.  If
you’ve encountered a line that isn’t listed in the careers section you may find

CHAPTER 3.

He stretches his arms over his head briefly, he sits down on the floor, he lies
sprawled out on the floor. He goes to the kitchen at meal times.  He crosses
his arms briefly.
Reported by Morrie and others.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The crossed arms behavior is one of much discussion; it has
been frequently documented as related to the farming, ranching and artistic
careers individually.

It can be argued that the crossed arms may be an imitation of Cody (the metal
artist), since it is his token pose for when he’s working and cannot accept
gifts.  In support of this theory, Knives has reported a notably artistic child
with no evident interest in farming or ranching.  However, Takakura can also be
seen crossing his arms whenever he isn’t walking somewhere (which is rare, but
visible).  In support of this theory, both Morrie and michael999516 report
ranch/farm-influenced children with crossed arms (often while looking at crops)
but have never spoken to Cody at any point in either of their games.  However,
any child that does cross his arms does it for such a brief period of time that
it is suspected to be universal and meaningless.

CHAPTER 4.

He stretches his arms over his head briefly, he sits down on the floor, he lies
sprawled out on the floor, he crosses his arms briefly, he gazes downward
briefly.  He goes to the kitchen at meals times.

It is suspected that any book that appears in the third slot from the top of
the bookshelf (above “search more”) is ‘canned.’  Rather than indicating career
interest, it is believed that these universal books serve only to indicate your
child’s growth and development from child to adulthood.  These books will often
change with every season within an individual chapter.

CHAPTER 3.

special attack!”)

The woodcutter replied “But that tree is very sacred...” Then the king stood
up... ... ...”)
Reported by loralinth, Morrie, LostArtofRock.  Suspected to be universal, but
it may be somehow related to ‘neglected / happy / mischievous / spoiled’ child.

it, it started moving violently...)

These incidents are otherwise unclassified at this time.  Some seem to be
associated with specific activities while others are not, while others have
been mentioned by one player only (and it is unrealistic to build patterns
based on only one report).  Some of these quotes have undetermined/heavily-
debated meanings; suspected meanings for all incidents are listed where
applicable.

Obviously, since these are not yet associated with a specific career these are
NOT good indicators of interest in any area.

THIS PORTION OF THE GUIDE CONTAINS MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS... in the form of game
script and very specific descriptions of game cut-scenes.  For the convenience
of players wanting to keep surprises intact, all cut-scenes--even the career-
specific ones--have been included in THIS SECTION.  Please avoid this section
if you would like to enjoy the game as it unfolds.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P4-D:Section 1.  UNIVERSAL FAMILY CUT-SCENES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER 1.

BETRAYAL SCENE: CELIA
Access this scene by participating affectionately in all of Celia’s cut-scenes
(including the one where she confesses her feelings and you requite) but give
the blue feather to another girl before the end of Chapter 1.
Reported by Morrie.

BETRAYAL SCENE: MUFFY
Access this scene by participating affectionately in all of Muffy’s cut-scenes
(including the one where you agree to take her on a date) but give the blue
feather to another girl before the end of Chapter 1.  When you try to enter
your house Muffy appears behind you saying, “...That’s OK.  I’m used to this
kind of thing.  I don’t even know why I came here.  Talk about stupid...”  She
walks away, then turns back to say, “I was serious about you.”  Muffy makes a
hasty exit.

BETRAYAL SCENE:  NAMI
Access this scene by participating affectionately in all of Nami’s cut-scenes
(including the one where she has to leave Forget Valley and you invite her to
live on your farm) but give the blue feather to another girl before the end of
Chapter 1.  When you try to enter your house Nami appears behind you saying, “I
heard you’re getting married.  Congratulations.  I guess I won’t be living
here, then.  See ya...” She walks away, then turns back to say, “I hope you’re
happy.”  Nami makes a hasty exit.
Reported by Morrie.

NOTE:  Only one girl can be betrayed per game.  The game will not allow you to
see the last cut-scene for more than one girl, and there is only one blue
feather with which to betray a girl.

END OF CHAPTER 1 WEDDING SCENE
At the end of Chapter 1, you are seen running from your house and to the house
of your selected bride.  The scene shows the girl’s adopted parents approving
the match and giving you advice for the future.  The new couple is shown
parading about the town announcing the news to all townspeople.  Some
highlights:  Young Lumina appears very disappointed, whereas Celia and Muffy
(if unselected) are very happy for you--even if you cruelly betrayed one of
them at the end of Chapter 1.  If Nami is unselected she acts very nonchalant
about your wedding... and promptly moves out of Forget Valley.
Reported by Morrie and others.

CHAPTER 2.

CHAPTER 2 INTRODUCTORY SCENE
Takakura talks about how your wife is adjusting to her new kitchen.  The scene
shows your wife preparing a meal, then turning and smiling at you.  Takakura
describes your son while the scene shows him running across the main room to
reach his toy box.  The scene switches to show you and your wife spending time
with your son while Takakura says, “All parents expect something from their
kids, but I wonder what they are dreaming of...”
Reported by Morrie.

Celia says, “Hey, what do you think about having [son’s name] inherit the farm?
Multiple choice (1)  Of course!  (2)  If he wants to
Select “Of course” and she’ll say, “I agree.  He was born on a farm, after
all!”
Select “If he wants to” and she’ll say _____.
Reported by Morrie.

Muffy says, “I want our son to be really smart and handsome, don’t you?”
(possibly paraphrased)
Multiple choice (1)  (2)
Reported by Morrie.

Nami says, “Hey, I want [son’s name] to grow up with as much broad a
perspective as possible, don’t you?”
Multiple choice (1)  I agree.  (2)  Health comes first.
Select “I agree” and she’ll say, “I guess you’re right.  He has to determine
his own path in life.”
Reported by Morrie.

GOOD MORNING
If you’re in the room when your wife wakes up, she’ll wake your child.  He’ll
say, “Good morning, daddy!”
Reported and confirmed by many.

SLEEPY MORNING
If you’re in the room when your son wakes up he might say, “...Yawn...”
Reported by CharmanderGatoman (the morning after witnessing “Restless Night”).
It may also be associated with playing with a child within the last half hour
before bedtime.

RESTLESS NIGHT:

If you’re in the room when your wife puts your son to bed he may refuse to go
to bed “No!” (Celia’s son) or “NO!  I want to play more!” (Muffy’s son;
possibly paraphrased) or “not... tired... yet.” (Nami’s son).
Celia will say, “You want to grow up big and strong like Daddy, don’t you?”
Reported by Ranilin, Morrie.
Muffy will say, “You want to grow up to be really smart, don’t you?” (possibly
paraphrased).
Reported by LostArtofRock.
Nami will say, “Don’t come crying to me if a ghost comes to get you.” (possibly
paraphrased)
Reported by loralinth, noj11jon.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Although generally accepted as indiciating a spoiled child,
this scene may have more innocent meaning.  Staid-weirdo reports viewing this
scene after playing with the child during the last half hour before bedtime.
It may also be randomly generated and not affected by gameplay.

GOOD NIGHT
If you’re in the room when your wife puts your son to bed he may say, “Yeah!”
(Celia’s son) or “Goin’ night night” (Nami’s son) and go to bed directly.
Reported by Ranilin, LostArtofRock, Morrie.  This scene is generally accepted
to mean a ‘good’ (unspoiled / unneglected) child, but may be randomly
generated.

VERY GOOD NIGHT
If your wife is not in the living room when your son’s bedtime arrives, he will
say, “Good night, daddy” and put himself to bed.  Reported for all children,
and is the result of your wife’s absence.
Reported by Sandy87, AllstarJason, Fox J McCloud, LostArtofRock, and Origima.

BATHTIME: PART 1
Enter the kitchen and your son says, “Daddy!  Can we take a bath now?  Please?”
Multiple choice: (1)  Let’s jump in!  (2)  Next time.
Select “Let’s jump in!” and he’ll say, “I love the bath...!”  You’ll see a
brief bath sequence with your little son.  Sometimes this event can be
difficult to trigger; it is suspected that you need to be good friends with
your son to witness it.
Select “Next time” and your son will be disappointed and the scene will not
take place.
Reported by many, Morrie (Chapter 2, Year 1, Spring 6, 6:14PM)

CHAPTER 3.

CHAPTER 3 INTRODUCTORY SCENE:  HAPPY HARVESTING
Following the career-specific END OF CHAPTER 2 cut-scene, Takakura describes
your son as growing to resemble your wife more and more, but wanting to do
everything you do.  The scene shows your smiling son as he appears in Chapter
3.  He’s fishing at the forest pond.
Reported by LostArtofRock, Sandy87, Morrie.

THE SECRET STICK
Your child will show you a stick on the beach and tell you it’s the treasure
he’s been telling you about.  He’ll tell you it’s cool like a spy and ask you
what you think.
Multiple choice:  (1)  Not at all.  (2)  Cool.  (3)  Why a spy?
Select “Cool” and he’ll agree and ask you to help him watch it.

THE SECRET BOX
Enter your child’s room to find him lying on the floor, “What is it, Dad?”
Multiple choice:  (1)  What’s this box?  (2)  Nothing.
Select “Nothing” and he’ll say “Uh.  I’m going to the bathroom” and leave
the room.  The scene ends.

Back to multiple choice:  (1)  What’s this box?  (2)  Nothing.
Select “What’s this box?” and he’ll stand and say “I picked it up on the
beach” and the scene continues to...

Multiple choice:  (1)  Throw it away  (2)  I see  (3)  It’s cool
Select “Throw it away” and he’ll sit down and say “I don’t want to!  I
like it!” and the scene continues to...

Multiple choice:  (1)  Throw it away  (2) Oh whatever
Select “Throw it away” (again) and he’ll say “No way!  It’s mine!  I hate
you Dad!” and leave the room.  The scene ends.
Multiple choice:  (1)  Throw it away  (2) Oh whatever
Select “Oh whatever” and he’ll say “You’d better not throw it away while
I’m not looking.  I’m going to the bathroom” and leave the room.  The scene
ends.

Going back to multiple choice:  (1)  Throw it away  (2)  I see  (3)  It’s cool
Select “I see” and he’ll say “I don’t know why.  I just like it.  Don’t
carry it off now!  I’m going to the bathroom.” and leave the room.  The scene
ends.

Multiple choice:  (1)  Throw it away  (2)  I see  (3)  It’s cool
Select “It’s cool” and he’ll say “*GIGGLE* You like it, too?  I’m glad!
Now look here” and crouch in front of the box, “It looks like a code is written
on the side!  I wonder what it could be?  *SQUIGGLE*” and the scene continues
to...

Multiple choice:  (1)  I have no idea  (2)  It says, “FRAGILE”  (3)  Whoopie
cushions
Select “I have no idea” and he’ll say “Even you don’t know?  Hm... I bet
it’s something secret.  Someone evil might come looking for it...!  We’ve got
to make a plan...!  I’ll think about it when I go to the bathroom.” and leaves
the room.  The scene ends.

Multiple choice:  (1)  I have no idea  (2)  It says, “FRAGILE”  (3)  Whoopie
cushions
Select “Whoopie cushions” and he’ll pause, think *SQUIGGLE*, then after a
moment say, “*WOH* Wow!  I can’t believe you can read the code.  *musical note*
You’re like a spy!  Okay...I have to train, too.  *moan*  First is covert
operations.  Let’s see how secretly I can go to the bathroom.” and leaves the
room.  The scene ends.

Multiple choice:  (1)  I have no idea  (2)  It says, “FRAGILE”  (3)  Whoopie
cushions
Select “It says, ‘FRAGILE’” and he’ll IMMEDIATELY say, “*WOH* Wow!  I
can’t believe you can read the code.  *musical note*  You’re like a spy!
Okay...I have to train, too.  *moan*  First is covert operations.  Let’s see
how secretly I can go to the bathroom.” and leaves the room.  The scene ends.
Reported by Morrie.  (Chapter 3, Year 1, Spring 3, 1:19PM)

PLEASE NOTE:  Although the wording is identical, the physical “Whoopie
Cushions” and “Fragile” responses seem to be a little different.  (Morrie
reports playing it back twice either way to confirm)  The notable difference is
the pause and squiggle with “Whoopie cushions”.  With “Fragile” he immediately
reacts positively and thinks you’re cool.  Either selection will result in the
follow-up diary entry about being a spy.  On another note, it seems the only
way to end the scene without your son going to the bathroom is if he runs out
hating you.  ^_^

ALSO NOTE:  Players report seeing only ONE of the “The Secret Stick” or “The
Secret Box” scenes listed above.  Never both in one game save.

CHAPTER 4.

CHAPTER 4 INTRODUCTORY SCENE:  HAPPY FARM LIFE
Following the career-specific END OF CHAPTER 3 cut-scene, time elapses to a few
years later.  The camera pans across the beach to show your teenage son sitting
under one of the shelters sketching alone.  Takakura talks about how your son
is growing up to resemble his grandfather.  The screen goes black, and Takakura
describes it as a very rebellious life stage.  The scene cuts to your son’s
room, where he’s sitting on the floor reading.  Your wife enters and asks,
“What are you reading?”  Your son doesn’t acknowledge her.  She asks, “Do you
want a snack?” and he stands and replies, “I’ll go when I feel like it.  Can
you leave me alone now?”  Your wife looks angry and leaves the room.  Your son
sits down and resumes his reading.  Takakura says, “You can’t control your
kid’s life forever...”  The scene changes to show your son running across the
farmyard with the dog.  Takakura comments that he’s much tougher now, and is
very healthy.  The camera focuses on the house which has expanded once more.
Takakura talks about you and how hard you worked to build a new master bedroom.
He comments that he won’t be retiring yet, as he’d like to keep working for a
little while longer.
Reported by Morrie.

NO TRESPASSING!
You enter your child’s room and he’s lying on the floor, while his bear is
standing by himself and blinking.  The bear sits down and your son gets up
angrily saying, “Don’t come into my room without asking, okay...?” and you’re
forced to leave the room.  If you enter again, the same scene repeats with your
son saying, “Don’t come in here ever again!” and you’re forced to leave again.
Reported by harvest moon tycoon (11AM), Morrie.  It is suspected that this may
be a universal scene for teenagers in general.

MOODY TEEN
Your child is arguing with Muffy about something and says, “Okay, I get it.
Whatever.”
Reported by LostArtofRock.  It is suspected that this may be a universal scene
for teenagers in general.

CHAPTER 6.

BATHTIME: PART 2
Enter the kitchen and your son says, “Hey, Dad.  Have you taken a bath yet?”
Multiple choice:  (1)  I already had one.  (2)  Yes.
Reported by LostArtofRock (Chapter 6, Fall 1, 8pm), Oddrat, longlivejoe
(Chapter 6, 7PM).  This scene is suspected to serve as story line exposition
only, and is not affected by your child’s career.  longlivejoe reports that he
did not have to see BATHTIME: PART 1 to view this scene.

GAME ENDING
You are looking out the window when your wife approaches.  She comments that
she doesn’t know what you think about all day, and that you’ve grown very old
and wrinkly.  Multiple choice: (1)  So have you  (2) You’re still pretty.
Regardless of your choice, the scene goes black and you hear your wife calling
for your son to find Dr. Hardy. The scene shows your son and Hardy running in
slow motion to the house.  Once in the master bedroom, Hardy announces that
you’ve left this world.  Your family shows disbelief and grief at the loss.
The scene changes to the Blue Bar, where several townspeople are saying kind
words about you.  Lumina describes you as an older brother, while Carter says
it wasn’t your time yet.  Someone asks Griffin to play a song in remembrance,
and he obliges by playing a song easily recognizable from Harvest Moon 64.  The
scene changes to show Nik and Nac at the pond.  Flak comes in to deliver the
news, and all three rush out.  The music ends.  (This scene is followed by one
of the career-specific endings that describe your son’s future).
Reported by LuckyGirl777 (HotHarvestMoonFan).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P4-D:Section 2.  ARTIST CUT-SCENES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
END OF CHAPTER 2.

Your child is drawing a picture.  You’re asked what it looks like.
Multiple choice:  (1)  A flower  (2)  Me, of course!  (3)  I don’t know.
Select “A flower” and your wife will say, “_____” (It is suspected this choice
influences farming)
Select “Me, of course!” and your wife will make a disappointed face. (It is
suspected this choice influences art)
Select “I don’t know.” and your wife will tell you she thinks it’s a flower but
your son told her it was supposed to be Daddy.  Your son will look unhappy and
your wife will say that maybe he has talent that you can’t identify yet, and
that maybe he’s a genius.  She’ll ask what you think but you won’t have an
opportunity to reply.  (It is suspected that this choice discourages both art
and farming)
Reported by LostArtofRock, LuckyGirl777 (HotHarvestMoonFan), ayuspeed, Sandy87,
Catherine_Draconia.

END OF CHAPTER 3.

The scene shows your son visiting Cody at his trailer.  Cody says he doesn’t
like the way his sculpture has turned out and he’d like to change the shape.
Your son thinks for a moment then says that he likes it and it’s too bad that
Cody would like to change it.  Cody tells your son it’s time to go home.  Your
son trots away.  Cody comments that your son has a good eye for shapes, and

came by my dig site the other day and wanted to listen eagerly to my stories.
I think he’s really interested in archaeology.”  Griffin reminds Carter that
your son is still a child, can’t help yet, and turns to you for your support.
You nod in agreement.  Carter is disappointed, but agrees that it’s your
decision, “He was so excited about it...but...I apologize.  Please forget I
said anything.”  You nod and Griffin cleans glasses behind the bar.  Carter
adds, “That’s really too bad.”  You and Griffin look displeased.  The scene

I’d like to thank Nintendo, GameCube, Natsume, and the many individuals that
worked hard to create Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.  I’d also like to offer a
special mention to GameFaqs—especially GameFaqs for offering Message Boards to
encourage discussions in a community environment, and for posting my first FAQ.
Thanks all!

Most importantly, this guide would not exist without the contributions of my
Research Team.  Without these players there would be less information and the
remaining information would be pretty much useless as a reference for anything
other than ranching.  So thank you!  Please keep these individuals in mind if
you’ve found this guide at all helpful.

In left to right amphibolical order the Research Team players are:

Some of the information in this guide could not be collected without my asking
very specific (and probably irritating) personal questions of some very
obliging and experienced players.  Having taken the time to run in-game errands
for me, these players are my Official Research Agents and deserve a special
mention.  I bow before them and owe them each a large thank-you.  If you have
read and benefited from this guide and happen to meet any of them on the
message boards, I hope you will extend a further thank you for their efforts.
