[1] Introduction

MY PURPOSE:

I made this guide primarily to help MYSELF:  I wanted to know WHICH gladiators
can be found WHERE, so that I could compare all the ones of the same class
before making a decision on one.

This guide does NOT contain skill information, and will not help you decide
which class to choose.  For that, please refer to muddynick or Lord deArnise's
Character Guide or purchase the Official Strategy Guide from Prima Games.

I have decided to be generous and make this available on GameFAQs.com for
others to use (AS REFERENCE ONLY), and not to copy or publish anywhere else.
It is absolutely NOT permitted to be used commercially.  This guide may ONLY
appear at GameFAQs, because then I only have to inform one site when I make
changes.


MY BACKGROUND:
(last updated August 17th, 2004)

I am only on my first time through this game, and I'm playing as Ursula,
although that has little effect on the information in this guide (except that
I place Nordagh before Imperia when I list the regions).  I intend to play
through many more times (much to the dismay of my boyfriend, who thinks I
should broaden my horizons and play other games once in awhile :P)  I love
this game though, with all the choices of classes and characters and skills
and customization.. and, in the end, having a school that has a good balance
of character types and affinity powers.  I love analyzing and critiquing my
choices, and MMMMMMmmm making changes :)  I also love discussing strategy and
answering questions on the Gladius message boards at GameFAQs.com .. but I do
NOT want to be contacted through email with questions.

Prima Strategy Guide, but as many as I could find ARE confirmed firsthand
- (Most Important) Recruits are organized in a way that is useful ;)

- Remove all question-marks from the list by verifying the data
- Find more gladiators that are not listed in the Strategy Guide
- Find out ALL the additional requirements recruits are looking for
- Find a Galdr to recruit, if it can be done!! [grin]  The Strategy Guide
doesn't mention them as being obtainable, but the availability of Galdr
helmets begs explanation (unless it must be brushed off as being a "tease").
Some people on the GameFAQs board have claimed they've recruited one ..
whether they're lying, mistaken, or telling the truth, remains to be proven.
- If certain trends are noticed in recruits (i.e. always choosing the same
affinity or skills, or whether one gladiator "always sucks" or "always rocks")
I will take note of it.

[3] Some Notes on Recruiting

FINDING GLADIATORS:

You may have to visit a recruiting office SEVERAL TIMES before the gladiator
you want shows up on the list.  This may make it difficult to figure out
which recruiting office holds a gladiator that you have previously expelled
(since expelled gladiators may appear in ANY town in the region where the
expulsion took place).  Thus, if you think you may want to re-recruit someone,
be sure to save your game before expelling, and figure out which office
s/he reappears in before saving again.


SPECIAL RECRUITS:

Some special gladiators offer to permanently join your school for free (and
are not available as temporary recruits at all).  Their cost is listed as
0(---).  The means of triggering each one is explained below.


RE-RECRUITING:

Expelled gladiators go to a random town in the region where they were
expelled, and may be difficult to find because recruitment offices rarely
list everyone available in that town.  You may have to check back several
times before you see the one you want.  Once you've found your expelled
gladiator, it will always be in that town, although not always listed.

The price to re-recruit is ALWAYS 250 Dinars per level for permanent, 50
Dinars per level for temporary.  Gladiators that are killed in random
encounters may also be found, for the same price, somewhere in the region
where they were killed.


RECRUITING GLITCH:

To permanently recruit gladiators that are listed as only being available for
temporary recruit, there is a glitch that can be abused:  Let your gold drop
below the Temp price (by buying a bunch of items) and attempt to recruit
them.  They will thank you for the opportunity or something, but "Do not
Recruit" is the only option .. surprisingly, after you select it, they
disappear from the recruit list and they are on your roster, free of charge.
They are fully under your control like regular permanent gladiators.

[4] How to Use this Guide
==============================================================================

First you must decide on a class, by examining muddynick or Lord deArnise's
Character Guide (available at GameFAQs.com) or Prima's Official Strategy Guide
to learn about their skills, or just choose a class because it looks cool...

Then, using my guide, you can seek out every instance of that chosen class,
and compare them to each other.  Compare skills, affinity choice, stats,
whatever.  Heck, you can even use this guide just to choose your recruits by
name, if you want.  This works especially well after getting to the point
where you can roam the world freely, and access all of the available
recruiting offices.  To get to that point quickly, please see my Speed
Walkthrough, also available at GameFAQs.com.

This guide's sole purpose is to tell you WHO is out there, and WHERE they may
be found.  I suspect that most other aspects of the character are random in
each game, things like their chosen skills, affinity, and stats, so I won't
list those details here (although I might do so later, if I notice trends).

- To activate the Historians Quest, talk to the Shopkeeper in Cro Beska. If
 you have the Mongrel Butcher badge from the "Mongrel Siege" League, she will
 tell you of a special battle in seven days -- don't miss it!  It will be in
 Cro Beska if it is your first time in Imperia, or Syrna if you've completed
 all the regions.

- There are two ways to go about ensuring that you get a Minotaur.  (The
 other classes that may ask to join your school are all available elsewhere,
 whereas Minotaurs are ONLY available here.)  In either case, if you don't
 get the Minotaur, you'll have to reload and try again.
 (1) If your school is full, save AFTER you complete the battle.  Expel the
 gladiator of your choice, then return to the League menu to have one of the
 combatants ask to join.  If it's not the Minotaur, at least you don't have
 to do the fight all over again.
 (2) If your school is not full, one of the Historians combatants will ask
 to join immediately after the battle.  If it's not the one you want, you
 will have to reload and redo the battle.

- Accessible from any Tombstone, at NIGHT, after earning the Talisman of
Unlife in the quest given by the shopkeeper in Mordare (after you enter
the "Dead of Night" league).
- Each region's tombstone produces skeletons that from that region.
- Their gender cannot be determined, and they do not cost anything, so those
fields have been removed from this list.  Instead, I describe the differences
in customizable gear (all have the same options for "skin" i.e. bone colour,
none have hair to be customized, none have multiple outfits).
- You can obtain multiple undead legionnaires by expelling one (make sure
he's in a nearby town), recruit a new one from the tombstone, then hire
the one that you previously expelled.  This can even allow you to hire two
with the same name!
