Hello, and welcome to my Sanity FAQ for the game Eternal Darkness, for
Gamecube. This FAQ will explain to you the sanity system in ED, and list
all of the sanity effects. Enjoy!

/////////
2-Sanity
\\\\\\\\\
Ah...one of the greatest aspects of this wonderful wonderful
game is the sanity meter! Whenever an enemy sees you, you'll
lose a bit of sanity (some enemies take more than others, as
logic would dictate). The only way to recover the lost
sanity, is to defeat the enemy, and perform a finishing move
on them. If you choose not to do so, you'll be less sane
than the average man (but hell, is the average man really
sane?). Anyhow, the less sanity you have, the more messed up
things get. Your character will see, and hear, and
experience some pretty messed up stuff. Also, your recover
spell can recover sanity when aligned with Xel'lotath. All
in all, this is an EXCELLENT addition to what would've been
only a great game, not REALLY great, like it is ^_^ Here is
a list of every sanity effect that I know of:

-The walls will bleed.

-You'll hear lots of screams, and whispers, and a lot of
latin, and basically just some really ****ed up stuff, and
if you're playing at night, by yourself, it can get you
wondering if it was just your game that made that
noise...^_~

-The camera will tilt about 10 degrees or so.

-Strange music will play.

-You'll hear strange quotes, from people such as Edgar Allan
Poe.

-Your character will talk to themself, and say things such
as "THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!"

-You'll walk into a room, and all of a sudden your head will
fall off, then your arm, then the other.

-Your head will fall off, and you can pick it up. If you do,
it will begin reciting a famous passage from Shakespeare's
Hamlet ("To be or not to be, that is the question, etc...").

-Statues will watch you.

-Art will change from peaceful scenes, to pictures of
hellish ungodly things.

-You'll receive a phone call from your dead grandfather.

-Your dead grandfather's ghost will visit you, saying some
strange stuff. Sometimes he's nice, but other times he's
being really evil.

-Bugs will crawl across the screen.

-Blood will drip from the ceiling.

-You'll turn into a zombie, and be able to walk around as
it.

-You'll go into a room, and you'll be walking around on the
ceiling.

-You'll go into a room, severely damaged, and be attacked by
many zombies.

-You'll open your inventory, only to find that you've lost
all of your items.

-Your TV will appear to have changed video modes, but you
can hear yourself being attacked.

-The word Mute will appear, as if someone has muted your TV,
and all noise will cease.

-The game will "reset", and the quote from Edgar Allan Poe
will begin to play.

-After you save your game, the game will change it's mind,
and say that it is deleting your game.

-You'll walk into a room, and have many zombies surrounding
you, and the game will give you a message that it doesn't
detect a controller in port 1.

-You'll enter a room, and the ground will be covered in
ammunition.

-You'll see the word Volume will appear, and the volume bar
will decrease.

-You'll appear to be walking in quicksand, and will sink
into the floor.

-Your character will appear to have shrunk.

-Your character will appear to have grown.

-Your character will shoot at the screen.

-While playing as Maximillian Roivas, you'll enter a room,
and end up in an insane asylum cell (foreshadowing anyone?).

-In the bathroom, you'll see an image of Alex Roivas in a
tub filled with blood, accompanied by a blood curdling
scream (this scared the bejesus out of me, lol).

-You'll go into a room to find a man hanging from the
ceiling. He'll say evil things to you.

-When you try to cast a spell, the top half of your
character will explode.

-Books will fly across the library.

-Two handguns will appear to be floating down the hall on
the 2nd floor of the mansion.

-A poker will be poking the fireplace in the library.

-You'll get Microsoft's infamous "Blue Screen Of Death".

-The game will go to a screen that says "To be continued..."
"Coming soon:Eternal Darkness:Sanity's Redemption".

-When you try to reload your weapon, you'll shoot yourself.

These two things always happen and have nothing to do with sanity.

-You'll receive a phone call from your dead grandfather.

-Your dead grandfather's ghost will visit you, saying some strange
stuff.
Sometimes he's nice, but other times he's being really evil.

Hey Hey!
I read your Sanity FAQ on gamefaqs.com and I discovered a new one that's
not on your list! (since I love going insane so much) I walked into a
room, got swarmed by zombies and then a thing popped up that said "There
is no controller inserted into controller socket #1" so you can't move
and then you DIE@!!! hah, it was great. Well, that's all

I thought of a couple of effects I did not see in your
FAQ ...

- When in the study area, you'll hear someone walking
around upstairs
- you'll hear someone banging on a nearby door
- also in regards to the books flying around in the
library I've seen two different instances of this 1) a
single book will fly across the room, 2) dozens of
books will fly around in a circle in the middle of the
library

- about the hanging man, I think this only occurs once
after you get the page out of the piano then he'll
appear on the otherside of the piano

the bath tub scene scared the hell out of me as well ...

Sometimes, instead of changing video modes,it will appear that your TV
has turned off.You can't hear anything either.

I got these two: (both with alex in the mansion)

-I went into the kitchen/dining room, and when i tried to leave it made
the sound of a locked door...so i went to the other door and heard the
same...i went back and forth about five times until it flashed back to
me saying ''THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!"
-If you let the controller sit for a few minutes a screen saver will
come up....it's a picture of PIOUS....you have to be insane to get it
though because i let it sit for 15 minutes when i was sane and
nothing....

-I guess this would classify under your ''really f***ed up stuff''...but
maybe you could mention them....pounding on doors....and when you stop
walking sometimes you still hear footsteps.
-And your effect about the head falling off...then an arm...then the
other....(then your torso...then you legs topple over).....but the
falling off is more of an exploding.
Great site though. My friend should be emailing you with two more he
got. You might already have heard about these from someone else but just
haven't updated the site yet, idk.
If you want to contact me by AIM, idk why you would but my sn is SEXYman

Hi,
I was reading your FAQ at GameFAQs on the insanity effects in
anticipation for Eternal Darkness, and I just got it today and found an
insanity effect that you didn't list. I walked into a room and Karim was
being 'erased'. Starting from his head to his toes, he sorta got wiped
of the screen and once he totally disappeared the game went back to
normal. I've also been attacked by a bunch of zombies while low on
health only to have the TV turn off. Hope you can make use of these :)
Keep up the great work on all the FAQs you've done for Eternal Darkness!

Another sanity effect is...
Playing chapter 7 as Paul Luther, you enter the doors from the front of
the church leading to the main hall, when you enter the next room, it'll
be black and white, but you'll be in chapter 9's world war 1 setting.
First aid tents set up, and the broken glass by the altar.

i have another 'side effect' that happens to you... i'm not sure if
this is
for everybody though, or just edward linsey, but that's who i was
playing as
when it happened.

i walked into a room and the room shook accompanied by a loud sound, a
few
moments later it shook harder and the sound was louder, then again
(louder,
harder), and a few more times until whatever it was seemed really
close, and
then it just stopped an there was lots of screaming from what sounded
like a
group of people, not just one. that's the best way i can describe it.

Nice sanity FAQ you've got there. Anyway, the only hallucination I've
seen
that you don't have in there is this: sometimes, when playing as
Brother
Luther, you'll enter the main hall of the cathedral to find the view in
greyscale, with all the medical crates and such that are there in Peter
Jacobs' chapter. Judging from the amount of emails you recieved about
the
Trapper autopsy, I'm sure you know of this already by now, but I
figured I'd
send it in anyway.

Oh, you also might want to clarify that the camera tilts more or less
depending on the exact level of your sanity, but it's your FAQ.

So, yeah, keep up the good work, and all that jazz.

Hello buddy! I saw your FAQ on GameFAQs on Sanity THings in Eternal
Darkness
and found that one that you din't  whrite.

One time i played as Roberto Bianchi and i entered a room and there was
the
usual zombies of that room... all VERY SMALLS! I wasn't able to hit
them
because they were so tiny but they was hitting at me, then Flash i get
back
to the previous room as if nothing hapened, but i kept the damage from
the
tiny zombies!

There it is, and Grats for your FAQs.

Hey,
After reading your FAQ on the Sanity Meter in Eternal Darkness, i was
scared shi*less. Some of those things (Especially the dead chick: that
scared the bejeezus out of me too.) were terrifying to even imagine. But
as I read I noticed one that you were missing: While playing in Chapter
4 as Karim, my sanity meter being especially low, and I had just beaten
one of the tougher battles in the chapter. (The one just before getting
the artifact.) During the middle of the battle all of the zombies
dissapeared and I was sliced clean in half. My bottom half walked around
when I tried to move, but my top half stayed lying down on the ground.
This was an especially gruesome one, and one that really pissed me off.
(I had almost beaten the chapter!) As for that, now I can't seem to beat
that part. (Y'know, when you're fighting where Pious was transformed at
the beginning of the game.) Do you have any hints of how to make the
ordeal a bit easier?
Thanks,

Kip

came across it right after Lindsey's quest when you
regain control of Alex.  The screen will appear to
turn off like someone switched off the T.V or the
power went out, then it will come back on with the
white flash that happens after every sanity effect.  I
was actually wondering if the power went out but then
i looked down at my gamecube and noticed it was still
on so it kind of scared me thinking i did't save my
game in a while.

Nice list I've not managed to get some of the things
you meantioned and wonder if some are charecter
spacific.  The two to point is the BSD and the head
falling off then quoting shakspere.

Here are some I have seen.

As Alex.
In the Kitchen plates, knives, dishes are floting
above the table.

As Maximilan and Edward.
Various servents descriptions change becoming
horrific.

As the reporter <forgot his name.>
The descriptions of the nurses change.

I do not have proof of this one but it seams that
sometimes when you are at zero insanity the finishing
move is more violent.

To note all the sceens with Alex and the ghost of
edward are fixed and part of the plot.  The bathtub
can also be triggered at full sanity as with the ghost
maid.  I think these are plot points.

I hope this helps and thanks for the list.

Hey...I was reading your wonderful compilation of insanity effects on
GameFAQ's and was compelled to submit some of my own...

-The TV will appear to shut off
-Enemies will appear where there shoundn't be any and when you attack
them
they disapear
-Your Character will attack when there isn't anything but air to attack
(unless you have a gun, because then the ammo needs to be conserved, so
the
game won't waste it on you)

Unfortunatley thats all that I've seen other than the ones you've
listed,
but I am constantly trying to figure out new ones...I'll sen you
updates as
I find them...

PS. The Picture turning evil and the bath tub with alex freaked me out

The ED:Sanities Redemption one had me going, and that statue staring at

To:     [email protected]

   Hey there,

Just got through playing Eternal Darkness, and I thought I'd point
two
more definite ones out, minor but definitly included;

Definilty the strangest one of them all, you will enter the next "room"
you
opened the door for, and nothing, and I do mean NOTHING will have
changed.
Everything can be picked up and manipulated as normal.  However, once
you
exit the room, the screen flashes white and you return standing outside
the
door, effectively nullifying your actions.  This only happened for me
in the
World War 2 level, but most of the insanity effects didn't repeat
themselves.

The second one is fairly similar, with a twist.  The entire screen
turns
brown "flashback" mode.  But again, nothing really changes, and nothing
in
particular occurs.  Screen flashes again after a bit of time. WWII
level
again.

The third one, was almost, glitch-like, and didn't suffer from the
strange
hallucinations--maybe I just screwed up.  I had the WWII character down
to a
quarter of insanity, and while in the basement, went into the small
room with
the letter on the desk.  Strangely enough, I heard a laughing voice,
and I
went to exit the room, it was locked.  I tried again, same results.
Walked
around the room, tried AGAIN, same results. Around the 4th time, the
door
opened, but without the usual white flash "This can't be happening!"
affects.
Damndest thing.  Maybe I just wasn't hitting the door right? I dunno.

when your sanity is low, the little bar that usually says "accessing"

of your games.. then the screen will go white and it'll be back to
normal... that one scares me heh..

As the preist when you enter the main area of the Cathedral, he will
see
into the future from when you play with the WW1 character.

Maximillian Roivas head will pop up from the bottom of the screen and
give
you a bit of a wink (this scared the shit out of me, almost as much as
the
bathtub scene.)

I'm not sure if you had this one already but... The quicksand effect.
The
character will walk around the room only to begin sinking into the
ground as
if we was sinking in quick sand.

Flashbacks.  As you're playing as one character, you randomly go back
into
past chapters and start controling old characters back in their
missions
once more.  For instance, I was walking with Maxamillian and the screen
flashed taking me to the Egyptian girl's chapter as she stepped on the
trap
flaps in the floor and was chopped by the blade. Then it simply went
back to
Maxamillion in the hallway.

Just thought I'd share a few with you. See ya

Well I was playing and I was at Chapter 10, playing as
Dr. Edward M. Roivas. Well anyway after I picked up
the Tome of Eternal Darkness, that dog monster was
walking around, and I beat him up enough to go down to
the basement, and I really wanted to save so I went
back to the secret place(where I got the Tome of
Eternal Darkness, pushed pause, and the screen went
black for awhile, then showed me, how I was when I
pushed pause, but across the screen it said something
like "Your Nintendo GameCube has had an error please
turn it off and refer to your instruction booklet".
So I turned it off because I thought I was just going
insane, so I waited awhile pushing buttons and nothing
happened, so I turned it off, then back on and I was
back where I last saved, and it really pissed me off.
Has that ever happened to you?

Now would you send me back something here or something.

In the mansion as Alex, you hear someone knocking at the door, also if
you kill a "civilian" you lose a fair bit of sanity. Also in the
Maximilian part, if you kill one of your servents one of those creepy
bird-like things with big claws (I can't remember what they are called)
will burst out of their skin. Also, I'm not sure if its the sanity or
the fact that one of those big monsters zapped me, but the players
movements are backwards (left goes right, up goes down etc). Thats all
that I experienced so far, (plus some of the others). If you decide to
add these effects to your FAQs guide, i would appreciate some credit
(yousuckdiddlyuckflanders) for my contribution (ha-ha). Thank you for
your time.

I ran into this today...

I walked through a door as Roberto and on the floor in the room lay,

we
